The G Word
In this case, the C stands for certified, as in certified wood and wood products. Behind the C word is the concept that wood must meet certain environmentally correct standards as it moves from forest through manufacturing and distribution to the final customer. Several organizations have been formed to ensure through audits that forests are managed according to internationally agreed principles and performance criteria so the customer is assured his purchase is from a forest having a balance between trees, plants, animals and the ecosystem.
As this concept moved from the still waters of theory to the churning waves of the marketplace, new voices began to be heard. Some said that while surveys indicate public acceptance of certification, the great majority, apparently, won't pay extra for certified wood. Others see it as a hopelessly utopian idea. Wholesalers and distributors claim few retailers ask for it. Retailers worry that they would need a double inventory if they sell both certified and non-certified wood, with all the cost implications of doubling up. How to sell and
handle a job with some of this and some of that is also a concern.
Skeptics charge that certification is nothing more than a stalking horse for the real aims of the environmentalists behind the movement, i.e., to eventually stop all timber harvesting so no trees are ever cut anywhere for any purpose.
Home Depot, an early enviro convert, has used its greenness to garner public support for the concept. Other retailers of varying size as well as some mills and wholesalers now are beginning to respond to certain buyers that will accept only certified wood.
Europeans are creating their own certification group, while America's Forest Stewardship Council is being attacked from within by the U.K.'s Rainforest Foundation, which accuses it of various failings. In New Zealand, Rayonier, after a two year trial, has dropped certification and the FSC as its forest auditor.
Stay tuned. This controversy promises to be a lengthy one.

SEVEN tips fot fetailingQSB
QALES of OSB for new construc\)tion, remodeling, and do-it-yourself purposes have skyrocketed, placing more demand on retail sales staffs to know the product and its advantages for end users.
The following are six points to remember when selling OSB:
ONE
OSB isn't what it used to be. OSB evolved from waferboard in the late 1970s. There is a tendency for many homeowners still to confuse it with that product, or an even bigger misconception, non-structural particleboard. It is important to explain that OSB is much advanced in terms of structural integrity.
TWO
No longer can OSB be viewed as the less expensive structural panel. It has become a product purchased for value, not simply low cost. OSB prices, in many cases, are achieving parity with plywood.
THREE
Oriented strand board is just that: oriented. Thin, rectangular-shaped wood strands are not randomly placed. These strands are positioned lengthwise and crosswise in layers, and bonded with water resistant adhesives. Most panel edges are also treated with a sealant for moisture protection. The result is a stiff structural panel with flexible qualities.
FOUR
OSB and plywood must meet the same standards. All building codes in the U.S. and Canada recosnize OSB
panels for the same uses as plywood on a thickness*by-thickness basis. OSB is also recognized for structural use in Europe. In Japan, North American OSB is certified to meet the Japan Agricultural Standard for structural panels, among.the world's most demanding and exacting certification marks.
OSB is an engineered structural panel, specifically manufactured fur such structural applications as floor, roof and wall sheathing in wood frame construction. OSB panels boast superior holding capabilities even when nailed close to the panel edges. Despite differences in composition and appeara*ce, OSB and plywood each share the same exposure durability classifications, performance standards and span ratings.
Oriented strand board
is just that: oriented.
FIVE OSB has distinct technical strengths:
* OSB has considerable structural strength, dimensional stability and bond durability resulting from the uninterrupted fiber, interweaving of the long strands and orientation of strands in the surfaced layers.
* OSB resists deflection, delamina-
tion, racking and shape distortion or warping.
* OSB panels are made of real wood, a natural insulator. Panels are lightweight, easy to handle and install, providing good protection against heat loss and condensation.
* As a result of its high-tech manufacturing process, OSB panels do not have knots, core voids and splits found in other wood panels. Each panel is consistent and uniform, allowing for good workability (easy to saw, drill, nail, plane, file or sand) and nailability (many interweaved layers create strong nail holding properties).
srx
OSB is environmentally friendly. The strands for OSB are produced from fast growing small-diameter trees in sustainable forests and plantations, obviating the need to log old growth timber. Production at mills is heat-powered by a portion of the harvested wood supply (recycled bark, screenings, sawdust and panel trim).
Resin binders and waxes are completely cured and stabilized, leaving no measufable off-gassing from panels.
SEVEN
Today's buyers want information. To increase sales of OSB, it's essential to understand its properties and effective uses. lf you don't have enough information about oriented strand board, ask yow supplier, APAThe Engineered Wood Association, or the Structural Board Association.

Steady growth slots OSB as top structural panel
Since it was introduced more than l5 years ago, oriented strand board has gained increasing acceptance and
usage by builders and buyers, to the point that it is supplanting other structural panel products in key industry categones.
I"OSB now has become the board of choice in roof, wall and floor applications," said Mark Angelini, president of the Structural Board Association. "lts use in new residential construction has outstripped that of other panel products."
OSB production in North America is expected to exceed plywood this year-dramatic progress considering OSB shipments have risen from scratch (zero market share from the early 1980s).
According to APAThe Engineered Wood Association, North

American OSB output last year reached nearly 19 billion sq. ft., up 12.27o from 1991.
Plywood panel production, however, slipped l.4%o to 19.7 billion sq. ft., the lowest North American plywood total since 1982. Despite plywood's fall, OSB's increase helped propel total North American structural panel production 4.8Vo to 38.7 billion sq. ft.
0SB production in
North America is expected to exceed plywood this year.
APA forecasts that North American OSB production will increase from 19.2 billion sq. ft. in 1999 to 20.4 billion sq. ft. in 2002. Plywood production is expected to dip from 18.5 billion sq. ft. in 1999 to 18.3 billion sq. ft. in 2002.
Although economists are predicting that the galloping pace of housing starts in the United States will eventually slow this year, key factors point to OSB increasing its market share for

the foreseeable future:
o Diminishing timber supplies favor engineered wood panels, particularly OSB. Made from strands of small diameter trees, OSB gets almost twice the yield from trees as other structural panels. (There is no log core left in the OSB production process.)
o While built to the same performance standards, OSB is a less expensive product.
o OSB encourages the more environmentally friendly approach of harvesting small diameter plantation trees-underscoring the viability of a stable resource supply without felling old-growth trees.
. OSB can be custom manufactured to meet specific requirements in thickness, density, panel size, surface texture, strength and rigidity.
o OSB's manufacturing process provides for consistent panels without knots, splits or core voids.

which requires no welding or special inspection. The purlins and girders were spaced to accommodate the wood panelized roof system, which installs significantly faster than a steel deck over steel beams or open web steel trusses."
A DVOCATES for steel construcfa, tion like to say that steel has won the construction battle against wood in California commercial buildings. However, recent trends indicate glued laminated beams and trusses are staging an impressive comeback in light commercial construction.
In Plymouth, Ca., for example, architects and structural engineers specified exposed glued laminated beams for roof girders, purlins and roof trusses for the new 35,000-sq. ft. Montevina Winery. The wood system was selected for aesthetics, and because it resists the humidity and fermentation fumes which could corrode steel framing. Humidity is kept artificially high for winemaking purposes inside the winery.
The longest wood girders, spanning 48 feet, are 8-3/4" wide by 39" deep. The purlins span 33'and are 6-3/4" wide by 33" deep. The laminated wood trusses span 48 feet with 5-118" x 12" top and bottom chords
Carl Christofferson of Summit Engineering, Inc., the structural engineers, says that the glulam beam roof system was installed abolt207o faster than comparable steel framing. "Most connections used with the glued laminated beams are commercially available, requiring no custom design or fabrication, which results in significant savings in cost and lead time," he explains. "The roof's plywood diaphragm is nailed directly to the glued laminated purlins and girders,
STRUCTURAL engineers say the winery's wood roof installed about 20% fasler than a comparable steel system.
Subcontractor L. E. Boyd, Boyd Roof Structures, said the glued laminated trusses were assembled with hardware connections at QB Corp., Salmon, Id., and then taken apart for truck shipment to the job site. "Wood is the only material that would have permitted us to assemble the trusses at the plant and then put them back together at the site," Boyd notes. He said the ability to assemble, break down and re-assemble the trusses provided major cost savings because of truck transportation economies.
Near Fairfield, Ca., a new plastic bottle manufacturing plant started out as a 200,000-sq. ft. building and was redesigned nearly double that size, utilizing timber framing. It is the 360,000-sq. ft. Schmalbach Lubeca plant, with a panelized roof on parallel chord wood trusses that span 50 ft. between glued laminated roof girders up to 82 ft. long.
The architect and structural engineer said they selected all-wood roof construction for the building design rather than a steel girder and purlin system in order to simplify the details and speed up the schedule.
r : F I i r
GLULAM timber trusses span 60 ft. at the new Montevina Winery.
16 Tnr Mnnculxr M,c.cazNn Sepreuern 1999
The roof system is set up with a bay spacing of 50' x 60', and has a clear height requirement of 35 ft. The glued laminated beams are 6-314" wide and vary in depth from 38" to 44". The roof purlins are open web wood trusses which span the 50 ft. dimension. The remainder of the panelized system is comprised of 2x6 wood joists spaced at 2.0' on center with l/2" plywood sheathing. The roofpitch is 1/4" per foot.
According to Tim McPartland, ATM Engineering, Sacramento, the fact that the roof structure was planned utilizing all wood construction enabled the redesign of the building from 200,000 to 360,000 sq. ft. in six calendar days. The design change was needed in order to accommodate the needs of Schmalbach-Lubeca. If the plan had been steel construction, the redesign could have caused a greater delay on the c.onstruction schedule.
"Steel purlins and girders require three to four weeks longer lead time in comparison to the relatively prompt delivery of glued laminated timbers," says McPartland, adding that timber framing requires less labor time for
detailing than steel.
Project architect Jon Hamilton, Hamilton Van Niekerk Architects Inc., Rancho Cordova, Ca., says, "The open web wood trusses provided competitive cost, fast availability, and simple installation." He notes that it is easier to make adjustments at the job site with wood framing rather than rewelding joints on steel bar joist construction.
Craig Silva, project manager for L. E. Boyd Roof Structures, says the glulam roof framing also reduced costs because of the type of insulation that is used. Steel roofs usually require rigid insulation on top of the

roof deck, while wood designs call for batt type insulation below the deck. "The construction time we saved with the timber system is important because every week you can save on a project this size makes a big difference," he adds. "Twistered"Timber Comes West
Timber damaged from a tornado that swept through Nashville, Tn., will be milled by a Northern Californiabased firm for registration as SmartWood Rediscovered Wood.
On April 16, 1998, a twister swept through the grounds of The Hermitage, onetime estate of president Andrew Jackson. During the brief but destructive rampage, many 2O0-year-old trees were downed or uprooted.
Under an agreement, Plywood & Lumber Sales, Inc., Emeryville, Ca., agreed to salvage and mill the timber according to standards set by the Rainforest Alliance, an environmental organization that manages the SmartWood Rediscovered Wood program.
In addition, the wholesale distributor will give the Ladies' Hermitage Association l}Vo of the profits from the sale of the wood, enabling the preservation group to plant new trees and sow seedlings.
Customers who buy the milled eastern red cedar, cherry, hackberry, maple, poplar or walnut will receive a certificate of authenticity and a book about The Hermitage.

Hope For Easing Of Redwood Shortage
Asked recently about redwood, wholesalers and retailers responded: "Redwood? What redwood?"
"Where is it?"
And, "I can't get any."
Producers, though, promise that the
redwood shortage is temporary. "We started hearing (such complaints) early this summer," says Pam Allsebrook, California Redwood Association. "There's been such a building boom, and there's only so much redwood we
can manufacture."
"We've had three years of very big housing starts," agrees Will Riegel, v.p.-sales & mktg. for Pacific Lumber Co., the largest supplier of redwood. "Supplies grow tight whenever there's a sustained era ofprosperity."
Riegel adds that his company's redwood production has been limited this year by other constraints, including drawn-out negotiations over the sale of the Headwaters Forest, meeting requirements of a complex new Harvest Conservation Plan-Sustained Yield Plan, and delays caused by unusually cold weather.
He expects supply to begin loosening up this month and to improve steadily throughout the rest of the year.
Even then, don't expect a miracle turnaround, cautions Allsebrook. "Be patient."

Western Lumber Production Increases
The expanding home construction and remodeling market helped increase Western lumber production in the first half of the year, according to the Western Wood Products Association, Portland, Or.
The agency reported that over the first six months Western lumber production grew by 8.3Vo to 8.87 billion bd. ft. In addition, product orders increased 8.3Vo, while shipments were 7,9Vo higher than a year ago.
With housing starts up 6.6Vo and existing home sales on an all-time record pace, the increased demand for lumber caused prices to rise. The average price for Douglas fir is up 35Vo from last autumn. Hem-fir prices have isen 32Vo and the cost of ponderosa pine is up llVo.
Imports, which account for over one-third of the U.S. lumber supply, have not kept pace with demand increases. Through May, Canadian shipments to the U.S., which comprise over 96Vo of import volumes, are up just 1.97o.
To meet the demand, Western sawmills are running above normal operating capacities by increasing operating hours or adding shifts. During May and June, mills on the Oregon and Washington coasts operated at more than IOOVo of capacity, with production up more than l3%o in the first six months of the year.
Mills in eastern Oregon and Washington and the rest of the West increased production by 5.6Vo during that time, operating at 94Vo capacity.

Web Site's New Owners Eyeing Pros
Contractor sales are among the new avenues being explored by the new owners of Superbuild.com, one of the largest electronic retailers of building products.
Services for professionals ate expected to be launched by the first quarter of 2000. "There's no reason why, if you're a contractor on a job site, you should have to go to your local lumberyard," said Tom Todaro, head of the four-person investment
group that acquired the Seattle, Wa.based online business.
Other investors include Mike Pickett, who will serve as Superbuild's new chairman, and Sam Heerensperger, former Eagle Hardware exec. v.p. of merchandising and son of Eagle founder David Heerensperger.
The team first considered launching its own site, then instead decided to acquire an existing leader in e-com-
merce. Superbuild.com, founded last October by John Keuber, receives about 100,000 unique visitors a month, with sales rising 20Vo a month to reportedly top $l million for the year.
Although Keuber has left, the company's ll employees were retained, including former Eagle executive Luke Baldwin, who is staying on as v.p. of sales and mktg.
The staff has expanded to 20 and the site is being completely overhauled. "We'll be relaunching with high-quality digital images on the site, and regional distribution nationwide, shipping out of warehouses in Spokane, Memphis and Frederick, Md.," Todaro said.
Its merchandise mix is also under review, with about half of its 80,000 offerings temporarily removed because they are redundant or not selling. By October the total will return to 80,000 with the addition of new products and entirely new categories such as faucets.
Other possible changes include providing e-commerce for physical lumberyards.
A month before Superbuild was purchased, Richard Takata resigned as president of Eagle Hardware to start the yet-to-be-launched cornerhardware.com.
J.E. Higgins Consolidating
J.E. Higgins Lumber Co. is moving its headquarters from Concord to Livermore, Ca., to a new 55,000-sq. ft. facility it expects will be completed by May.
The Pella Window & Door distribution division, now housed in a multitenant industrial park in Livermore, also will move next year to the new free-standing building. Higgins'
Wood Flooring
Distributors division, which distributes Bruce and Robbins hardwood flooring lines from Hayward, Ca., also will move to the Livermore facility in 2000.
The consolidation of the corporate offices under the same roof as operational business units has been a longtime goal of the ll6-year-old company. The acquisition of land and development of the new facility was made possible by the sale in April of the company's Union City property, which it owned since 1968.
Additionally, a new company-wide computer system is slated to be operational in November.

Lanoga's Steady Grourth
For Redmond, Wa.-based Lanoga Corp., 1998 was one for the books. Last year, the company recorded over $1 bilIion in sales for the first time in its 144year history, with $1.028 billion in receipts. The figure represented a 4.l%o rise from 1997.
The hrm has prospered by focusing a great deal of its energies on satisfying the needs of professional contractors. This has enabled Lanoga to stand apart from larger chains and avoid competing with them for the d-i-y market.
In addition, their decision to conduct business in various parts of the country has helped the company avoid regional economic downturns.
The Lanoga family includes 45 Lumbermen's Building Centers in the Northwest, a dozen Spenard Builders Supply sites in Alaska and 126 United Building Centers in the Midwest.
The firm has done its homework too, earning mostly A s in, appropriately enough, the subject ofacquisitions. Over the past year and a half, ceo Daryl Nagel and his executive team have purchased premium lumberyards, most of which have been located away from major metropolitan areas. Once acquired, new yards are renamed and then stocked with the appropriate merchandise mix to
match whichever Lanoga chain. This allows the firm to secure its base in each market area.
Lanoga doesn't stand pat once each Grand Opening ribbon has been cut either. Periodic adjustments are made to each store's merchandising and marketing plans. Where bigger chains don't
exist, for example, a greater emphasis is placed on catering to d-i-yer's needs. Despite the encroachment of Home Depot and Lowe's, Lanoga executives have set a goal of reaching $ I .5 billion in sales by the end of 2000. To accomplish this, Nagel plans to spend at least half of his time scouting potential acquisitions.

Slower Growth For Siding
U.S. siding demand should rise l.l%o annually through 2003 to $8.1 billion, reports the Freedonia Group.
Among materials., fiber cement and vinyl products are forecast to achieve
the fastest growth, while wood siding continues its decline of the past decade. Advances for vinyl will slacken from the pace of the 1990s, but it will remain the market leader with a share exceeding 43Vo by 2003.
Depot To Ban Old Growth
By 2003, Home Depot plans to phase out products using wood from certain "evironmentally sensitive" regions, unless the wood is certified by environmental organizations.
Targeted species include redwood and cedar from old growth forests in the Pacific Northwest and lauan from the rain forests of South America and Southeast Asia.
hoducts include lumber and other wood-based products, such as hammers, rakes, brooms and paint brushes.
The company reportedly has contacted as many as 30 affected vendors, who agreed to participate.
The chain said the move should not raise retail prices, since it initially will absorb any added costs, said ceo Arthur Blank.
Eventually, the chain would like to adopt a policy of selling only products made from certified lumber, but first must convince vendors to use certified wood, since currently only lVo of lumber sold worldwide is certified, said Blank.
Fenestration Groups May Join
The Window & Door Manufacturers Association and the American Architectural Manufacturers Association are exploring possibly merging into a new organization to represent the entire window, skylight and door industry.
"Increased cooperation in the last several years has already shown us a few of the benefits that a single industry voice may give us," says AAMA chairman Chuck Gilderman. "A new, even broader organization could combine the best attributes and strengths of each association to better serve the industrv."

Quake And Tornado Strike Montana
A 5.2 earthquake briefly rocked the Loma, Mr., area in the wee hours of Aug. 20, injuring no one and causing minimum damage.
"I heard a roar and then it was over as quickly as it began," said Randy Bernard, co-owner, Lima Lumber Co. "A bit of merchandise fell off the shelves, but that was the extent of the damage, fortunately."
According to Bernard, his father and co-partner, Leon, purchased the business in 1951. He added that the town has a population of about 250.
"Quite a few of our customers said they were in the shower or the tub when the quake hit," he chuckled. "They didn't know what was happening. My wife thought I was thumping on the walls."
Loma wasn't the only area to be shaken up. Six days earlier, an F2 rated tornado hit Lewistown, yielding l13 mph winds that uprooted trees and toppled power lines.
Among those who emerged unscathed from the storm were over 40 Western Building Material Association members who were attending a meeting at the time. Several members' automobiles sustained considerable damage from metal roofing and other flying debris from a nearby lumberyard. While the storm did create a power outage, the predinner social continued unabated, with a menu ofcold sandwiches, potato chips and beverages, all served by candlelight.
The following day, Dwayne and Robin Baakedahl, owners of nearby Edgewood Building Supply, and WBMA members, opened their business to provide building supplies and other materials to residents for repairs.

ou've tried those trendy sidings. Tht'r rnadt all sorts ol promist's, but none of them lived up to their words. lt's time to come back to real redwood sicling, the one the othcrs try to irnitate.
