Hardwood And/Or Softwood

Most people outside this business have trouble understanding why some companies sell only hardwood and others only softwood. If wood is wood, why the difl'erencel, they ask. This being our annual Hardwood Special Issue, we thought the separation an appropriate topic lirr softwood firms contemplating an expansion into hardwood and vice versa for hardwood companies.

To many, the gulf between the two is large enou-9h to induce acrophobia. A common refrain holds that the two are so different in supply, product and customer areas that never the twain shall meet. While noting the diff'elences, others f'eel that softwood and hardwood are not mutually cxclusive. Indeed, they feel that structured correctly either can be incorporated into the other as an ardditional profit center.

While this may be true, no one should underestimate the considerable gap that separates the two. For example, stocking a hardwood inventory generally costs more than a softwood inventory. Sofiwood products are more likelv to be traded

and sold as commodities than are hardwoods. Sellers of hardwood assert that the technical knowledge necessary to properly and effectively sell hardwoods is greater than that required for softwoods. Sofiwoods tend to be sold for a specific purpose, such as studs, rafters, joists or sheathing while hardwoods are more likely to be sold for their value as they can be used in a variety of different products such as shelving, cabinet doors, shutters and the like. Be aware, though, that these generalities are subject to a number of specific exceptions.

The customers who buy these two types of wood tend to be as dissimilar as the woods themselves. Many building components are softwood, so these buyers are a world apart from the industrial account that needs red oak, maple, ash or other hardwoods fbr a manuf'actured product.

Should you leap the gulf? One wise industry veteran counsels that the fbcus should not be on the differences, but rather the opportunities inherent in each.

How hardwood moulding stack

hECORATIVE hardwood mouldl-f ings can lend unique character to walls, windows, doors and ceilingsand can do it cost-effectively.

According to the Hardwood Council, dealers can suggest that builders. architects and interior designers can give their clients the quality and luxury of hardwood mouldings without sacrificing the bottom line. The cost of hardwood mouldings can be significantly reduced through a process called "stacking" or by specifying a more abundant species.

A wayto manage cost

is to specify a more abundant hardwood species and stain it to resemble a more expensive species.

Stacking is the process of joining several complementary stock profiles to create mouldings with a custom look. More than 350 standard moulding profiles are produced in the U.S., and each costs considerably less than a custom profile. With stacking, as many as l0 separate profiles can be combined to create an elaborate crown moulding, for example.

Another way to manage cost is to specify a more abundant hardwood species and stain it to resemble a more expensive species. Some lighterhued, close-grained hardwoods, such as poplar or basswood, often are stained to resemble darker species like cherry or walnut.

stainable, the least costly and abundant,"

"Poplar is one of the most popular says Sandy Hamilton, director-sales and marketing for White River Hardwoods/Woodworks, Inc., Fayetteville, Ar. "Hardwood mouldings are advantageous because you can stain them. You can't do that with synthetic or composite materials."

Species substitution works especially well in decorative applications above eye-level, as with crown mouldings and recessed ceiling panels. More functional millwork applications, such as railings, and door and window trim, also present good opportunities to specify a lower-cost hardwood species.

The high quality, warmth and visual interest of solid hardwood mould-

ings provide advantages over other materials. "People prefer hardwood because it develops a patina over age," says Mike Bell, general manager of Kentucky Millwork, Louisville, Ky."lt grows richer as it grows older. That's often the reverse with synthetic materials."

Others simply favor hardwoods for their one-of-a-kind look and feel. "There's a difference when you touch hardwood mouldings as opposed to other materials," says Maura Delvecchio, marketing manager for Ornamental Mouldings, Archdale, N.C. "There's a certain weight, durability and warmth that you feel with hardwoods that you can't find anywhere else."

helps sell hardwoods

II /HAT'S the best material for my

Y Y new foyer floor? What type of cabinets will give me the look I want, and stand up to heavy use? Which materials increase the resale value of my home? What floor covering will be best for my child's allergies?

The answers to such questions help homeowners in purchasing hardwoods for designing or remodeling their homes. Just as important, your answers can lead customers to upgrade purchases of high-quality cabinetry, flooring, millwork, paneling and other products that mean increased profitability, along with a higher degree of customer satisfaction.

Few materials have enjoyed the sustained popularity of such North American hardwoods as oak, walnut, cherry, maple, hickory, alder, ash and poplar. And few materials offer as many clear-cut benefits, which you can list with confidence.

Here are some typical questions, along with the hardwood facts you need to answer them.

What is the best hardwood species for floors?

A O* is the most frequent choice for floors, but ash, beech, maple, walnut and cherry are also popular flooring species. Flooring is available in strips, planks or parquet, and can be custom-made, often combining several

species, to create one-of-a-kind floors in any room of the home.

Homeowners can select prefinished flooring products, which require less labor to install, or unfinished flooring that can be stained or painted. Both offer builders and their customers a wide selection of styles, widths, grain patterns and colors.

Few materials otfer as many clear-cut benefits.

Hardwood flooring is an option you can recommend with confidence because it provides paybacks to the buyer in an attractive appearance, durability and value. Buyers should understand that a hardwood floor, while costing more initially, will last the lifetime of any home, while carpeting, vinyl and tile will eventually have to be replaced, perhaps several times. Hardwood flooring also requires relatively little maintenance, and can be refinished to match changing decor schemes. Equally important, hardwood floors are a key selling point, enhancing a home's resale value.

Q Wf,u, about cabinets, mouldings and other products?

A g*d*ood cabinetry is available in a wide variety of hardwood species and finishes, from transparent stains that showcase the grain pattern to popular pickled and pastel colors. Doors, paneling and decorative mouldings also are available in a wide selection of species and styles.

There is a hardwood species for every budget. For higher-end homes, you can recommend species such as walnut or cherry. Oak, maple, ash and hickory are popular choices for cabinets, flooring and other products among mid-priced home buyers. Poplar, an abundant species, is a costeffective alternative to softwoods and man-made materials.

Emphasize the long-term benefits of hardwood products, so customers understand how an investment in quality hardwood products is returned in greater beauty, durability, repairability, lasting value and quality.

Q e." hardwoods difficult to maintain and keep clean?

A Uod"rn finishes make hardwood products extremely low-maintenance. Penetrating sealers such as polyurethanes make hardwoods highly resistant to moisture, stains and everyday wear and tear. Properly finished hardwood floors, cabinets and mouldings require only regular dusting or vacuuming, and an occasional wipe

with a slightly damp cloth or mop. Depending on their finish, these products can be waxed once or twice a year to help bring out their natural beauty and protect them against fingerprints and moisture.

When nicks or scratches occur. most hardwood products can be sanded lightly to even the surface, then refinished to keep them looking new.

Q Cun hardwood flooring be used in the kitchen?

A Hurd*ood flooring is a popular choice for today's kitchen, for good reason. Tough, modern finishes make hardwood floors virtually impervious to spills and foot traffic. A hardwood floor also is easy to maintain, requiring only light dusting, cleaning with a slightly damp mop, and an occasional coat of wax.

Hardwood floors also are more durable and easily repaired than other flooring alternatives. When a homeowner redecorates, the entire floor can be refinished to coordinate perfectly with new cabinets and wallcoverings.

Hardwood flooring is available unfinished, or in a variety of factoryfinished styles. You can team with your customers to create a hardwood kitchen floor in a wide range of species, widths and patterns to match any decor.

Q e." synthetics more sanitary than hardwood products for certain applications, such as kitchen countertops?

A Hardwoods are making a comeback in kitchen countertops and maple is leading the way. In fact, hard maple is the wood of choice for butcher blocks, according to the National Sanitation Association Foundation.

A recent study showed that hardwoods such as maple, the most popular countertop material, actually kill bacteria. Butcher block countertops can be sealed with oil to protect the wood from moisture and provide stain resistance. Other research shows that hardwood flooring offers distinct health benefits, because there are no "hiding places" to trap dust, mites or bacteria. That's one reason why hardwoods are preferred by homeowners who suffer from allergies and respiratory health problems.

Q Cun we use hardwood products in the bathroom?

A Moir,u."-resistant finishes, such as polyurethane, make hardwood bath vanities, cabinets, flooring, paneling and moulding attractive, easy-to-maintain alternatives to tile, wallpaper and other man-made substitutes. Hardwoods also offer unlimited decorating possibilities, from modern styling and lighter finishes that provide a bright, open look, to classical, more elegant profiles in darker finishes.

Q Ho* easy is it to change the "look" of hardwood products?

A

A One of the biggest advantages of hardwood products is that they are "recyclable." They can be refinished repeatedly over their lifetimes by stripping away the old finish, and restaining or repainting the wood to match changing tastes and decorating schemes.

Q er"n', hardwoods expensive?

A ml,iutty, hardwoods can cost more than other products. But you should stress to your customers that hardwoods are a long-term investment in the quality, performance and value of their new home. Compared to manmade substitutes, hardwoods provide lasting value through their natural beauty, durability, easy maintenance and repairability-the hardwood floors, doors and mouldings in thousands of historic homes, many of them several centuries old. are testimony to hardwood' s longevity and strength.

Equally important, the addition of hardwood kitchen cabinets, flooring, crown mouldings and other finishings adds thousands of dollars to the resale

value of a home and attract buyers to provide a faster sale.

More abundant hardwood species such as oak and poplar are priced competitively with other substitutes, providing builders and home buyers with a cost-efficient way to add the beauty, durability and value of hardwoods to a new home.

Will hardwood products affect the environment?

A

A U.S. hardwood forests have been among our best-managed natural resources for decades. Since 1955. the volume of hardwoods growing in the United States has increased by 7O7o.

Thanks to modern forestry techniques such as sustained yield management, the U.S. grows about 4070 more hardwood than is harvested each year, and current projections show we will have '707o more hardwoods available for harvest by the year 2040. Thanks to responsible forest management by hardwood producers, many of them small business owners. hardwoods are truly a renewing natural resource that are increasing in abundance and will continue to be here for future generations to enjoy.

In terms of energy efficiency, it takes far less energy to manufacture hardwood products than to create synthetic doors, mouldings, cabinets, countertops and flooring. Also, hardwood products, since they are made of natural materials, can be refinished to add years of use. When hardwood cabinets, doors, paneling or other products reach the end of their useful life, they can be recycled into other wood products.

Concrete euidence The case for concrete wall systems

A RE concrete wall systems. as proll, ponents claim, the "wave of the future" in residential construction?

By the year 2000, 1Vo of single family homes in the U.S. will be built with concrete wall systems, according to a market forecast by the Portland Cement Association.

Of the many insulating concrete form (ICF) systems, there are two prin-

average 7%o-lo%o higher than wood.

In addition, according to the California Cement Promotion Council, substituting concrete walls for wood framing can save up to 20 trees per house.

Other studies, say the council, have shown that concrete walls reduce sound transmission by more than twothirds over frame construction.

California architect Craig Smith claims that lower energy costs argue in favor of concrete, since the heavy duty wall system absorbs heat for interior dissipation and is a superb insulator.

An energy cost study at Boston University compared 29 concrete homes to 29 wood frame homes of similar square footage and age. The ICF systems cut energy used for heating by about 447o andcooling32%o. Smith is impressed with the ability of concrete to locate in any climate and on any terrain. He also calls it a "malleable material" that accommodates any design concept. "If somebody wants Southwestern adobe," says the architect, "he gets Southwestern adobe. If she wants Cape Cod, she gets Caoe Cod."

cipal types. One uses hollow, interlocking polystyrene foam blocks that stack like masonry. The other uses foam panels with plastic ties to space them apart. Concrete is poured into steel-reinforced cavities in both systems to form walls of various thickNCSSES.

The stay-in-place foam forms supply insulation. Concrete supplies both insulation and strength.

Energy efficiency, earthquake and fire resistance, durability and maintenance ease have made ICFs popular in Europe for decades.

Contractor Michael Congdon has been acquainted with the ICF system for 25 years and recently completed two homes in the San Luis Obispo, Ca., area. Both are in the 2,600-3,000 sq. ft. range. One is Southwest Mission style, the other French Traditional.

Congdon finds the ICF system design flexible, quick to frame, and not victimized by adverse weather. During an El Niflo season, once the roof shelter is up, nobody has to worry about stacked lumber soaking up rain.

Costs of concrete and wood framing are comparable in the conventionally sized home, Congdon says. For large homes, ICF construction costs may

Itr/OOD composites and plastic

Y Y lumber will continue to provide real competition to wood in established applications, according to research by Principia Partners.

The new study, "Wood Composites and Plastic Lumber in North America 1999," predicts double-digit growth in North America for these substitute products for at least the next l0 years.

The researchers attribute the gains of wood composites and plastic lumber to performance advantages over

traditional wood, including:

* Plastic materials resist rot and insects, providing an inherently longer life than wood. This is especially true in outdoor applications such as decks and marine applications. Resistance to rot and insects was the catalyst for the application of Fibrex years ago when the material was used for the door sill of an exterior door frame.

intrinsic durability. Further, the material can be injection or compression molded or extruded to produce complex shapes.

x Wood composites and plastic lumber can be pigmented and colorized during processing which eliminates the need to paint the surface. Ultra-violet retardant additives can be used in the melt phase to protect the colors lrom fading. again ensuring a relatively long life. This continues to be an area of further technological advancement for these products, particularly in decking uses.

* Wood composites absorb less moisture than traditional wood and have a higher modulus of elasticity than PVC, providing superior performance in demanding applications.

Economically, wood composites and plastic lumber are not inexpensive to produce, and accordingly sell for higher prices than their wood equivalents. However, total installed cost is often purported to be less than wood based on easier installation methods.

In addition. the life expectancy is such that in the long run, a wood composite can be less costly and a better investment than its wood counterpart.

Wood-thermoplastic composites use a wide range of polymers in various proportions, with the primary wood forms being fiber/flour and the primary plastic materials including low density polyethylene (PE), high density polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polypropylene (PP).

Plastic lumber is defined as pre-

PE-based composites account for the bulk of the market today (see chart on previous page), with 322 million lbs., or 57Vo of the total volume in 1998. Each of the remaining materials-PP-based composites, PVC wood composites and plastic lumberaccount for comparable shares of the remaining market. The total size of the plastic lumber and wood composites market in 1998 was 565 million lbs. valued at approximately $220 million.

"Written specifications for structural materials are generally beyond the performance capabilities of most wood composites today," says Principia Partners analyst Lou Rossi. "As the industry matures and specifications are written with these materials considered, wood composites may gain some acceptance in more demanding applications."

The overall market is projected to grow l3Vo annually from 1998 to 2008 (see graph at top right). Among the broad groups of applications (building products, infrastructure, transportation

and industrial/consumer), building products is by far the largest at 371 million lbs., and is expected to grow at I 17o annually. At present, virtually all applications for wood composites and plastic lumber are non-structural, due in large part to the performance limitations of these products.

The wood composite marketplace is extremely competitive, with a few dominant players having the bulk of the market, together with a large number of start-up companies vying for entry in various segments of the marketplace. Consolidation has taken place in the industry, with one company-U.S. Plastic Lumber-having purchased over l0 companies over the past several years.

Forecast by Market

Industry profitability can be expected to improve considerably as demand in the marketplace catches up with installed capacity. Additionally, sales, general and administrative expenses, depreciation, and fixed costs can be better distributed over this larger critical mass. Further consolidation of the many small price-driven players will also raise industry profitability.

Some companies, like AERT, are at the break-even point so that further increases in sales revenues will largely fall to the profit line after years of investment in equipment and product development.

The wood composite and plastic lumber business is a relatively young, rapidly growing industry. A wide range of entrepreneurial ventures and corporate development initiatives have launched a variety of product lines. These companies were founded to exploit an available raw material supply-predominantly post-consumer HDPE-or to take responsibility for the company's primary products (e.g., Mobil's development of Trex wood composite lumber to reuse grocery sacks it produced). Generally, these products were not developed in response to a recognized market need.

The business has moved from an embryonic stage to one of strong growth. As the transition occurred, industry consolidation began. It started on the plastic lumber side of the business, largely driven by U.S.

Plastic Lumber's efforts to gain market share, and has begun to take place in the wood composites segment.

In addition to acquisition of smaller players, companies have attempted to consolidate share by eliminating competitors' ability to practice portions of the technology. Various patent infringement suits have been fought, both in court and privately. The result of most battles has been the invalidation of certain patents, although no players have been excluded from the market due to these efforts.

A limiting factor in the production of wood composites and plastic lumber is the availability of a recycled plastic waste stream. Availability of such feedstocks as HDPE reclaim in adequate quantities cannot be assured and represents a real possible limitation to industry growth. Major retailers are reluctant to take on product lines such as wood composite decking because of an anticipated lack of recyclate, thus creating a shortage of final product supply. Opportunities for post-industrial reclaim and even possibly prime resin as feedstock materials may exist to address this concern.

Continued consolidation is expected. Further acquisition activity, patent infringement suits, and integration should enable the stronger players to solidify their position in the marketplace and provide sustainable, investment-grade profis.

Medium density fiberboard (MDF) and highly computerized operations allow door manufacturers to realize affordable customized products that leave pricey custom doors in the sawdust.

Economy-minded

MDF is literally opening new doors for many homeowners.

"MDF doors offer strength and stability benefits that no other door can," claims Mike Judes, president of Supa Doors, San Antonio, Tx. "Builders of hotels, high rises and large commercial structures favor MDF doors because of their durability in hightraffic areas and because they don't shrink or crack."

"In the past, builders of half-million-dollar homes often couldn't afford the budget chunk-about loVo-required for custom wood doors," explains Steve Gomez, production manager of TruStile Doors, Inc., Denver, Co. "Instead, they made do with a cheaper product like a hollow core door. not at all on the same level as the home's faucets and other

fixtures."

Today, economy-minded MDF is literally opening new doors for many homeowners. The composite product provides a solid cutting surface all the way to the core and adapts to almost any style preference. Its dimensional stability and machining consistency allow manufacturers to efficiently create individualized doors with true stile and rail construction, not merely stamped panels. MDF also provides the weight and acoustic properties that consumers prefer in a door.

"Architects can now specify any door design they want for a house without going over budget and without lengthy waiting periods," Gomez says. Custom MDF doors sell for roughly one-fifth of the price of custom wood doors, he says, and can be delivered in a fraction of the time.

*MDF provides a blank slate for an almost limitless range of designs including cut and bolection mouldings, circles and curves," says Robert Stuart, director of Bolection Door, Greensboro, N.C. "For one customer, we created a door with a calla lily design. For another, we did a beaded board door because the customer had visited Monticello and wanted a door like Thomas Jefferson's."

In addition, he reports, "MDF's smooth surface takes paint better than wood, and allows for a wide range of creative treatments. One customer used whitewash over MDF doors for a nice effect. Another painted his door lime green for a refro '50s look."

Open, closed or ajar, MDF doors are a durable, cost-conscious way to achieve the individuality of custom styling.

Foxworth-Calbraith Lumber Co. has signed a letter of intent to purchase privately-owned Brookhart's Building Centers, Colorado Springs, Co.

Dallas, Tx.-based FoxworthGalbraith will acquire Brookhart's yards in Colorado Springs, Canon City, Grand Junction, Montrose, Monument, Pueblo, Rocky Ford and Woodland Park, Co., truss plants in Pueblo and Colorado Spring, Co., and a distribution center.

The acquisition will give Foxworth-Galbraith a total of 80 locations across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado.

The company, which was founded 98 ycars ago, expects the sale to close in November.

Nothing protects wood from marine borers like CHEMONITE@ (a.k.a.ACZA). By penetrating wood through a pressure-treating process, CHEMOI\IIE guards lumber and pilings from mollusk damage, as well as from insect attack and rot.

In coastal areas where marine-boring organisms like Teredo, Pholad and Limnoria tripunctata threaten below-water pilings, CHEMONTIE serves as an important defense. Used in hundreds of floating docks over the past ten years, CHEMONITEtreated wood still shows no signs of deterioration.

From freezing seas to tropical waters, CHEMOMTE offers tried-and-true protection for above-water and below-water structures. It also meets EPA andA\fPA standards without affecting wood's workability or strength. For more information on how CHEMOMIE can protect your wood structures, call us today!

TruServ Consolidates Under True Value Name

In a move to create the world's largest retail hardware chain, TruServ Corp. is consolidating its three store identities under the True Value name.

The move, which begins this month, will rename more than 3,000 ServiStar and Coast to Coast stores by February, allowing the company to funnel all its advertising and promotional efforts into promoting a single chain of more than 8,000 stores.

"With the onslaught of marketing initiatives by all varieties of retailers competing for consumer attention,

well-known brands are paramount to success," explains ceo Don Hoye.

From an operations standpoint, the move allows the co-op to realize efficiencies in signage, packaging, inventory management, material handling and distribution. Consolidation of paint products alone will reduce SKUs by 393.

"The increased focus on one retail identity will provide far greater awareness among consumers for each member's store, making us a competitive power both nationally and in every

Lookirs for one VERSATILE

market where True Value exists," said executive vice president of business development Brian Schnabel.

"We would not be able to do the things necessary to promote our stores and to be competitive if we remained three brands," agreed Barbara Wilkerson, a TruServ board member and proprietor of Blackhawk Hardware ServiStar, Charlotte, N.C. "Unified under True Value, we will have brand recognition, supported by more advertising dollars, to promote a single brand. There really is strength in numbers."

Lott Home & Hardware True Value, Childress, Tx., already made the switch, after recently moving to a higher visibility location. "We've been in business for 22 years and have done well with the Coast to Coast brand," said owner John Lott I[. "But with more traffic driving by the new store, we believe thatTrue Value will bring in some of those people who didn't come to our other location."

Increased stores should benefit every TruServ member, he added. "Just like when a consumer sees a McDonald's, they know what to expect because it means the same in nearly every town. If we all portray ourselves the way we should be as True Value, then consumers will look for True Value because they know what to expect."

The move, though, also is benefitting the competition, since some ServiStar and Coast to Coast stores don't want to switch to True Value and are joining other co-ops. Elliott's Hardware, Dallas and Grapevine, Tx., for instance, is dropping its True Value affiliation to align itself with Do-it Best.

In the first eight months of 1999, competing co-op Ace Hardware enlisted 25Vo more new members than it did the previous year. And of the 190 new Ace locations, 131 defected from other co-ops.

Discrimination Suit Settled

A former Home Depot employee who filed suit claiming religious harassment has received a $92.000 settlement from the chain.

Louis Gorchoff, a one-time emploYee at Depot's Bothell, Wa., store, filed suit in September 1998, claiming he was harassed because he is Jewish. While denying any wrongdoing, Depot agreed to improve efforts to comply with anti-discrimination laws.

lnsulated Panels Up In Commercial

The Structural Insulated Panel Association's annual survey revealed structural insulated panels (SIPs) showed significant gains in light commercial construction.

Generally associated with residential construction, 27Vo of SIPs produced in North America were shipped for use in such non-residential projects as schools, rnotels, assisted living facilities and churches.

The majority of survey respondents indicated a large increase in architectural specifications for engineered wood during the past year,

Designing professionals cited their concern about the quality and price volatility of dimensional lumber as one reason for the change.

Labor shortage was listed as another factor contributing to the increase. "In the western states. the labor issues have been quality as well as quantity," said board member Frank

Benchmarking Wholesalers

The typical lumber wholesaler earns a pre-tax profit of l.2%o by generating $30 million in annual sales, average gross margins of 9.6Vo of revenue, and total operating expenses at 7.8Vo of sales, according to the North American Wholesale Lumber Association's annual member survey.

Among the most profitable onefourth of respondents, average annual sales were about the same as the average for all respondents, but gross margins and pre-tax profit were markedly higher at l2.2Vo and 3.3Vo of sales, respectively.

At 8.7Vo of sales, total operating expenses for the most productive wholesalers were higher than the average for all respondents, likely due to higher payroll expenses. The most productive distributors also had lower interest expenses at 0.2Vo of sales than the group as a whole (O.6Vo).

Of NAWLA's 600 members, 94 participated in the survey.

Georgia-Pacific's CFO Quits

In a surprise move, John F. "Jack" McGovern, chief financial officer, Georgia-Pacific Corp., Atlanra, Ga., resigned effective Nov. I from his post offive years.

G-P's stock price tumbled l3%o on the news.

McGovern, 53, who said he is leaving to pursue private investment opportunities, will be succeeded by Danny W. Huff, 48, the current treasurer.

An employee of Georgia-Pacific since 1979, Huff has worked under

McGovern since 1982. He,

turn, will be succeeded by Phillip M. Johnson, currently senior directorinternational development.

Steven A. Coulter, assistant treasurer, will succeed Johnson.

The high energy is visible, the excitement audible. Says NAWLA's Kent: "The noise level is unbelievable. It's like being on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange."

With exhibitor participation and attendance rising l-57c to 50olc each year, there seems to be no end in sight. "We could have sold rnore exhibit space, if wc had it," Marks says. "So. Copeland Continues Sell-Off

Copeland Lumber Yards, Portland, Or., has found new owners for another handful of its locations.

Tum-A-Lum Lumber, Walla Walla, Wa., which operates l0 yards in Oregon and Washington, agreed to buy Copeland's locations in Carson City and Gardnerville, Nv,, and Susanville, Ca.

Parr Lumber, Portland, which bought six other yards from Copeland five months ago, also will acquire the Forest Grove, Or., unit.

Additionally, yard managers Grant Forest and Ray Cammabo, who have been in negotiations to buy the Newport and Waldport, Or., yards for over four months, expected their deal to close by Oct. L The locations will retain the Copeland Lumber name.

Copeland still has up for sale 42 other locations in western Oregon and Washington, Nevada and the Central Valley of California. The company had operated 68 yards in Oregon, Washington, California, Nevada and Arizona before announcing the liquidation of the chain due to owners Helen Jo and Bill Whitsell's plans to retire.

BC Completes Furman Buy

Boise Cascade Corp. Boise, Id., has completed its acquisition of privately held distributor Furman Lumber. Inc.. Billerica, Ma.

With the purchase of the 43-yearold company's l2 regional distribution centers in the East, Midwest and South, Boise Cascade will have a total of 28 DCs, overlapping with Furman

only in Dallas. (see July, p. 39)

"We're proud to have Furman as part of Boise Cascade," said Stan Bell, vice president, building materials distribution division. "This allows us to serve a growing number of customers on a nationwide basis."

According to Bell, B-C will not be closing any locations. "We're going to continue to run both Dallas locations." he said. "Each has some differences in product lines and a little different customer base. Further, they're located at opposite ends of town."

Bell said Furman's management will continue in place. "The same people will be doing the same things, just with slightly different titles," he said. "They'll continue to operate from the

offices in Billerica, as the Eastern Region. The BMDD locations will become the Western Reeion."

Universal Buys Back Stock

Universal Forest Products recently purchased 100,000 shares of its common stock, bringing to 207,201 the total number of shares repurchased under a five year, 1.8 million share repurchase program authorized by its board last October.

"Our stock repurchase program will be used to offset the potentially dilutive effects of options issued under our company's employee and outside director compensation plans," explained chairman Peter F. Secchia.

U.S. Leans Against Extending Softwood Pact

Lumber retailers and home builders are applauding U.S. Special Trade Ambassador Peter Scher for recently announcing that the U.S. does not intend to seek a reinstatement of the Soliwood Lumber Agreement when it expires in 2001.

In a letter to Canada's Minister for International Trade. Scher noted, "It is our sense that both the U.S. lumber industry and lumber consumers have becomc increasingly disenchanted with the SLA in many resPects. We believe both the governments of the United States and Canada should get

out of the business of regulating lumber trade and, therefbre, we are not inclined to support an extension of the SLA.''

In response, National Lumber & Building Material Dealers Association president Gary W. Donnelly stated, "This is a huge vindication for lumber dealers who know they can make a dif'ference and who persevered and fought our government and the large and wellfinarnced U.S. timber industry coalition over principles we believe in."

Donnelly, though, did admit that "while thc Scher lctter acknowledges

the effectiveness of our opposition, we will continue to maintain our vigilance. We presume that (Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports) is already preparing to launch a countervailing duty action against Canadian producers the day after the SLA expires."

Local Hardwood Promotions

Lumber processors and loggers who previously have only worked with softwoods are beginning to learn that Califbrnia hardwoods off'er more value as manufactured products than as firewood or chips, thanks to promotional efforts by the California Hardwood Manufacturers Network.

Participation by the grouP at such events as the Sierra Cascade Logging Show and the Redwood Region Logging Conference is helping to educate the public and raise awareness of California hardwoods.

The shows provided an opPortunitY lbr networking among members of the hardwood business and those interested in entering the hardwood industry. Prospective manufacturers viewed hardwood flooring, furniture and other items and had access to technical assistance.

Celotex Goes Instructional

Celotex Corp. has added a new instructional division called CelotexTech to show customers various methods of installing their products.

The division is part of a new brand identity program that includes changing the company's logo design and colors to black and yellow and its theme to "Build on Our Knowledge."

"Our re-branding will focus on positioning Celotex products as the intelligent choice in building materials," said John Borrreca, president and ceo.

OSB & The Pacific Northwest

In 1994, Weyerhaeuser made available to selected areas, a new, "no need to sand" OSB tongue-and-grooved floor panel, Edge Gold. The panel offers similar performance characteristics yet less sanding and lcss swelling than other competing OSB panels, so there are fewer callbacks.

A PLYWOOD alternative called Aoss. often conlused with waf'erboard and particleboard, has been around since 1982. Builders liked it due to its favorable price, and each panel was consistent with no delamination or core voids, just solid wood with no air. The sheets were flat and did not warp or buckle when left laying around the jobsite.

But when it rained on an OSB floor, something happened that killcd the growth of OSB tbr floor panels in the Pacific Northwest. Some people called it "edge swell," puffing up of ends and edges to form a picture frame, and many felt it was coming apart. If the swelling was not sanded down before carpet and pad were laid, you could see and feel a lump beneath the floor covering. This extra work and callbacks caused many builders t<l switch back to other wood floor panels.

But plywood panels have Problems, too. Each sheet looks different. There is delamination, edge and core voids, buckling, patches falling out, and putty all over the face and edges. Even so, builders were content with these plywood problems. They had lived with them before, and would continue to do so if necessary.

To achieve such superior pcrlbrrnance, Weyerhaeuser developed a new resin blend using extcrior type liquid and powder phenolics and MDI technology (Super Glue) to enhance durability. Second, all panels have two coats of new gold color edge sealer applied to all cdges fbr easy market identification. In addition, cach unit has new and attractive dark grecn, white and gold packaging. Thcsc side covers also protect the tongues and grooves of the panels.

Field tests plus actual usagc on thousands of residential hornes havc proven the engineered panel perlbnns cxtremely well in thc wct Scattlc, Portland, Northern California and British Columbia areas.

It is also guaranteed not to delaminate for l0 years, and the flooring panels can be covered with carpet and all types of hardwood strip flooring.

INNOVATIVE Edge Gold panel helped fuel growlh of OSB by eliminating need lo sand.

Chains Formulating Environmental Policies

Within days of Home Depot announcing it would phase out wood products derived from "environmentally sensitive" regions, competitors

Lowe's and HomeBase revealed plans to create similar policies.

Lowe's said that by year's end it would introduce a certification policy

similar to Depot's intention to work with its vendors over the next four years to discontinue canying products using wood from certain regions, unless the wood is certified by environmental organizations (see Sept., p. 34).

Just over a week later, 87-unit HomeBase, Irvine, Ca., announced that the environmental components ol' its lumber sourcing program were under review and that it hoped to launch a fbrmal lumber sourcing policy next year that might incorporate certification.

HomeBase said it "is working closely with its lumber suppliers to develop a workable program that enables it to meet the diverse needs of customers, while fbstering ecologically sound forestry practices."

Excess Inventory On Line

Miami, Fl.-based bliquid.com has launched reportedly the first selt'-listing industrial auction Internet site enabling businesses to sell wood products and other excess supplies and equipment.

Listings are free, with the service charging sellers a 57o commission on items that sell.

WEARING GREEN: Logistics mgr. Travis Szwast (on right in left photo) accepts plaque from Baron Enterprises' Robefi Ross for aiding the environmental efforts of Home Depot, which was honored recently by two pro-recycling organizations for having bought over 3 million lbs. of plastic slip sheets (right photo) instead of wooden oallets.

Keeping Existing Customers Happy

Retaining existing customers is easier and less expensive than searching for new ones. The following tips from the Virginia Building Material Association will help earn repeat sales:

(l) Do not overstay your welcome. Buyers are buried in work. Their time is valuable, so don't take too much of it. Be completely familiar with your product before you show up for an appointment. And don't delay in following up with information requested by your customers.

(2) Keep time on your side. If a sales call is taking longer than you expected and you're worried about risking a big deal at your next appointment, don't just rush through your presentation. You might make it to your next appoinfinent on time, but you may also ruin any chance of selling this customer. Be honest and admit that you underestimated the time the call would take, then ask if you can come back later that day or the next morning.

(3) Let it sink in. Give customers time to review your bids, especially for big ticket items. Buyers must understand the bid before they make a deci-

sion or try to sell it to their boss.

(4) Listen closely. Some buyers know what they want and can explain it to you. Others need some prompting. Either way, listen to what they

say. It's your responsibility to locate the products or services they request.

Business Valuations

(conrtnuedfrom page 40)

overnight experts range from business brokers and realtors to CPAs and giant financial planners. But many, even those qualified in another field, do not have the experience, expertise or formal training to do a business valuation that meets today's standards. They can do real damage to a dealer and his family, because of their unfamiliarity with the guidelines, tax rulings, the retail lumber industry and the valuation process.

Q: What should a lumber dealer expect to pay for a properly prepared business valuation that is acceptable for use in estate planning, ESOP, tax or divorce litigation, etc.?

A: Business valuations can cost up to $40,000 for a single yard. There is little relationship between price and quality of the valuation or acceptability by the courts or IRS. Typically, valuations cost about $10,000 plus expenses, although many will not quote a firm price.

Ace E-Commerce Venture

Ace Hardware is teaming Internet firm'Our House, Inc., to create an industry-first "home solutions portal" offering products, projects, information, service, installation and an online community.

Called OurHouse.com, the e-commerce venture will be launched in November.

Ace will serve as the key minority stockholdet in the company, acting as the fulfillment house by initially offering some 22,000 individual products extending beyond regular Ace catalog items.

Consumers will either purchase items directly from the OurHouse. com Web site or by visiting participating Ace stores with in-store kiosks to be in place by April. Prior to intoduction of the kiosks, individual stores will offer consumers online products via store Web sites launching in December.

Kiosks will be provided at no charge to Ace retailers meeting prescribed criteria. They receive commissions from product sales generated from their store's kiosks and Web sites at about 60Vo of gross projects adjusted for direct expenses.
