The art of execution: get it done!
I must admit a great relief. One of the benefits of being out of corporate life is not having to go through that arduous and contentious period of doing the annual budget. The two or three months it seemed to take before everyone was on board with the numbers that had been sweated over and fudged for the xth time-only to have a blanket hold put on certain spending six months later (regardless of what my division may have been doing)-is no loss. I do not mind taking accountability, but I no longer could take accountability for plans that were not mine or my team's. This came after working in true entrepreneur-driven companies in my early years and then moving to larger, Fortune 200 companies. What a difference and shock.
So often carefully crafted strategic plans would be shred to pieces by a panel that had no idea what was going on below them. No risk was acceDtable, and "do more with less" *ur fh. order of the day. Many senior executives in large companies remove them-
selves from the nitty-gritty and delegate, delegate, delegate. Those who delegate the actual execution iue on a slippery slope. It does not work.
It's hard work being a c.e.o. You have to understand what is going on in your business. You cannot be involved in every detail, but you have to understand your products, markets, key customers, and the strategy that will lead to success for those products. That cannot be delegated.
But what happens in reality is that lip service is given to what truly needs to be done, and long-term planning is a joke-six months now qualifies as long-term. Remember the five-year and 10-year plans? I accept that events do happen-September 1l and collapsing lumber prices being good examples-that can necessitate changes. But it seems to me today that in corporate life there is a complete lack of passion for strategic planned risk. The stop-go-stop mentality that pervades doing businessjust baffles me. The frustration for the
rank and file only seems to encourage a "who cares" attitude. After all, in the "decision by committee" environment in almost every company, there is no one other than the immediate manager who sticks out.
I remember being directed to sign a multi-million dollar deal that, as division head, I was uncomfortable with. My subordinates told me, "Alan, sign it. None of us will be around in two or three years when it hits the fan." What a sad indictment of corporate culture. My old school (actually I never went to business school, which may explain it) says build a plan, believe in it, fight for it, go for it, do it, review it constantly, modify as and when needed, and then take accountability for it.
Today so many businesses at all levels fail to meet their profit objectives, regardless of size, and many times it is because they do not follow through on carefully drawn out plans or are given unrealistic expectations. Managers must do what needs doing every day of the week until the effort shows up on the bottom line. Sales people need to do what needs doing in the field, to open that new account, grow that customer, and add value to a sale. In other words, whatever size your company, whatever your position, we need to bring back the pride of achieving. The beauty of the plan is not the plan itself, it is in achieving the plan.
In too many companies the intellectuals stand out for being, let's say, intellectual. But what businesses want today are people who execute-people who say what they do and do what they say. Frankly, there is a complete lack of people who fit this mold. Maybe I am being unkind or maybe, just maybe, too many have had their heads cut off and decided the risk was too great. In some organizations-too many I'm afraid-the idea people or the boot lickers move up, not the doers. In other words, execution is not a company priority that managers and staff are measured upon.
Today. business life is more complex than ever, with cycle times shorter and shorter. Set high expectations for yourself, your company, and your subordinates. Be disciplined about achieving your plan. That is the edge you will have over 80Vo of all other companies. If you are not looking ahead as well as over your shoulder, you will be overtaken. Most of all, have guts and build in risk. Nothing risked, nothing gained.

Pre-priming is first step to selling wood siding
By Dennis Connelly Chief Operating Officer Churchill Coatings Corp. and LFI-PrimeTECH
/-TONTRACTORS are still sur\-rprised when they hear that wood siding is low maintenance. Tell a homeowner, "How about wood siding?" They might chuckle a little and say, "I'm not painting my house every five years," as though it's a foregone conclusion.
How is it possible that the message of pre-priming is still lost on so many people? Well, for one, the alternatives to wood are less expensive and seem simpler. But they all have one thing in common: they are trying to imitate the look of wood. In other words, we still like wood. It has a class and a charm that, ultimately, cannot be imitated.
Pre-priming your wood
siding and trim transforms it into something revolutionary.
Many of the available alternative siding products have worthy features, but looking like wood is not one of them. "But I keep hearing about all this painting. I want something I can install and forget about. What am I missing?" you ask. The answer is that pre-priming your wood siding and trim transforms it into something revolutionary.
There is a single reason to preprime that trumps all other reasons and is the secret to its low-maintenance qualities. Yes, it saves time and
money, and, yes, it also gets the back of the wood primed before the opportunity to do so is missed forever. But that's not the most important reason to do it either. Because the truth is that wood siding can be as low maintenance as vinyl siding if it's done properly.
What is low maintenance?
Painting your home every five years is too much maintenance. But l5 years might be okay. Pressure-washing vinyl siding is done frequently, though it isn't required for the structural integrity of the product. Reroofing happens every 30 years, but is very expensive. Where does wood siding fit? The answer is interesting because wood siding has a maintenance schedule that puts it squarely in the low-maintenance category, if it's done right, i.e. pre-primed.
Why do coating manufacturers offer 3O-year coating warranties with only one additional re-painting in year 15 after the wood has been preprimed? What do they know about pre-priming that gives them such confidence?
The answer can be found in two places. One is the experience accumulated in the past 30 years of watching the pre-priming industry grow and mature. Another can be found in government research at the USDA Forest Products Lab in Wisconsin. According to studies done there, the trick to a very long coating life is to protect the exposed side of the wood before the wood ever sees light. This prevents the fibers from becoming damaged by light, resulting in a larg-
er-than-expected reduction in bond strength of the coating. Only a few weeks of exposure can reduce bondstrength by up to 507o.
Consequently, pre-priming makes the coating stick for a very long time. Using a high-end acrylic latex paint as the final topcoat gives the coating great durability. The result is real wood siding that is low maintenance.
If you build a house at the age of 40 and paint it one more time before you are 70, might we all agree that this qualifies as low maintenance?
Given the increasing importance of maintenance requirements in the purchasing decisions of contractors today, it might be time that this message was no longer a surprise.
--{ -l 1 I ''t
PRE-PRIMING reportedly negates lhe primary advantage substitute materials tout over real wood siding: low maintenance.

A RE your customers' stairs stylish? If not, they can -Cl,take heart. Builders, remodelers or homeowners can start from scratch or make a few simple changes to create their own stairways to heaven.
Convincing builders to create elegant staircases or encouraging homeowners to transform their unremarkable steps into modern masterpieces nets dealers a big-ticket sale of hardwood stair parts.
"Stairs are very special places," says Mark English, a San Francisco, Ca., architect. "They provide a great opportunity to enliven a space."
The rich, natural tones of hardwood staircases add warmth to any home, English says. In a traditional setting, they tie in with hardwood floors, trim and furniture. In a contemporary home, they contrast with metal, plastic or glass.
Homeowners should consult a contractor or caroenter if they are considering making changes to their stair.s. Most staircase work is best left to professionals familiar with local building codes.
Types of staircases
There are dozens of types of stairs, according to Scott Schuttner, a home builder and carpenter in Fairbanks, Ak., and author of For Pros/By Pros: Basic Stairbuilding.
The straight stair has the simplest design. It usually is easy to build but often difficult to find room for in a floor plan. "They're long and skinny, so in a house with conventional S-ft. ceilings a straight case will be at least 10 ft. long," Schuttner says. "Add to that landings at both ends,
trftnhrs of trHncv fncourage yo(r ustomers to craft avenly stairways
and you can see that a straight staircase takes up a lot of space."
A straight stair usually fits best against one wall. Adding a landing halfway down a straight run of stairs adds visual interest, but also takes up more floor space.
The L-shaped stair is versatile because it can be tucked into a corner without looking cramped, Schuttner says. For the equivalent rise, an L-shaped stairway actually needs a little more floor space than a straight stair. "But you don't have to find one long, straight chunk of floor space, which is difficult in a small house." he savs.
An L-shaped stair, also called a quarter-turn can be more appealing to the eye than a straight staircase.
It's possible to turn an L-shape into a T-shape by building two flights of stairs from a common landing. This type of stair will not fit into a corner and can't be considered space-saving, but it will maintain visual symmetry if you are trying to divide a roort.
You may be able to give an existing staircase new life without replacing the entire thing. For a typical L-shaped staircase, replacing a metal balustrade system with hardwood handrails, balusters and posts would cost about $2,500, says Tom Myer, general manager of curved stairway manufacturer Staircase & Millwork Co., Atlanta, Ga.
His company sells oak, cheny, poplar and maple stair parts in a variety of styles including sleek contemporary, elaborately detailed traditional or simple colonial. Fluted, curved and twisted balusters in different designs can be mixed in the same staircase for a unique look. Stained

Oak treads, rails and newels, painted balusters and
treads and handrails paired with white painted risers, stringers and balusters are a popular choice. Hand-forged iron balusters can be combined with hardwood handrails for a Mediterranean feel.
For homes with enough room, a straight staircase could be replaced with a curved oak staircase for about $10,000, Myer says. If there's not enough room for a curved staircase, the last five steps of a straight staircase can be flared out to add visual interest, he says.
For especially tight spaces, the spiral staircase is worth considering. This type of stairway, with treads attached to a center pole, takes about a third less space than a straight staircase, estimates Marc Tirey, owner of custom wood staircase maker Cincinnati Stair, Loveland, Oh. He has installed hardwood spiral staircases in libraries, game rooms and basements. "It's a real conversation piece," Tirey says.
Staircase storage
Storage niches can be built into the actual structure of a staircase or spun off from landings and railings, notes architect Joanne Kellar Bouknight, author of Taunton's Home Storage ldea Book.
"Benches with hinged or sliding lids can be incorporated into the staircase, creating a perfect storage space for bulky items, such as blankets and pillows," Bouknight explains. "Smaller box units can organize and hide games and toys."
Recessed or projected shelves can be used for books, photos or collections. Small play areas or work spaces can be created in the niche underneath the stairs.
"It is important to remember, however, that the stair's
primary function is as a pathway to and from other floors, so storage should not disrupt traffic," Bouknight says. "And potential fire hazards, like old newspapers, should not be stored in or around the staircase."
In a recent San Francisco remodeling project, architect English designed kitchen cabinets that form the first of three flights of maple stairs. Stainless steel tension cables rise 35 ft. to the ceiling at the top of the stairwell, where they are attached to a steel bar.
"stairs should be shaped to show off a person moving through space, either from below or above," English says. "In that way, stairs can be part of a choreography."

fN RETAIL. the last rwo monrhs of Ithe year typically generate from 254OVo of annual sales. Many retailers view holiday gift shopping as crucial to making up for the year's weak first and second quarters.
"Convenience is gift shoppers' top priority this year," says Pam Danziger, president of Unity Marketing and author of Why People Buv- Tltings They Don't Need. "Shoppers seek special gifts that are just right for the recipient, but what they want most is to shop stores that are convenient and make their gift shopping experience quick and painless."
Among her strategies for retailers to increase holiday gift sales:
I l. Focus on enhancing the "gifiing" experience, rather than on the gift. The goal of gifting is to emotionally connect the giver with the recipient. The gift itself is the means to an end,
a rare opportunity for a store to touch two consumer segments-the buyer and the recipient. and that end is an emotional connection between individuals. Gift shoppers will reward retailers that help them enhance the gifting and gift shopping experience.
2. Kro. qualities desired in a gift. With connecting the goal, giftgivers seek gifts that show they know the recipient. After finding the right item, gifters want quality, uniqueness
and an item that expresses their and the receivers' individuality. Giving the shopper a way to customize the gift and to add a special touch just for the recipient will be rewarded.
t
J. Convenience is key in shopping.
While gifters want a special, emotionally evocative gift, they won't trudge from store to store to find it. In choosing a store to buy gifts, they want convenience first and foremost, so they tend to go where they shop for themselves and know the layout.
To maximize gift sales, retailers should compile a list of the top gift ideas for specific relations (e.g., husband, wife, child, co-worker) and price points (e.g., $25 and under, $26$50, $51-$100, $100+) and post this prominently at the front counter, the registers, and on the window to entice shoppers inside for the most convenient shopping experience possible. If you have room, end caps or tables stacked with gift ideas draw crowds.
A +. Girt certificates are key.
Gift cards, rather than cash, are preferred by gifters because they show the gifter cares enough to have shopped. Too many stores make their gift certificate or gift card program an afterthought. This misses a huge opportunity to build shopper loyalty among both gift givers and gift recipients. Increasing sales of gift certificates should be a cornerstone of a retailer's gifting strategy, since with a gift card you touch two shoppers, not just one. Gift cards should be appealing to give and receive. Generic cards
are hardly enticing. Cards should connect emotionally too, displaying popular licensed themes, brands, or other art that the individual will want to eive and receive.
F
J. Cifiting goes on all year long. Gift shopping doesn't take place only in the last two months of the year. Heavy gift buyers, in particular, are always out and about, grazing for new ideas. They buy and stash away gifts all year long, so make gifting and gift shopping a key retail focus throughout the year.
O. Put people back into your store. While retailers are working to remove sales help and make the shopping experience do-it-yourself, gift shoppers value the personal touch. After all they are looking for an emotional experience in the gift they choose and the store they shop at, and they want knowledgeable, well-trained sales help to guide them. They also demand that the checkout process be as convenient as possible. With other retailers depersonalizing shopping, those that put the personal back into it will be greatly rewarded.
( o Target the decision process. Gifters have several critical decision points in the shopping process. They must select something that the individual wants within their price range. To help gifters find the right gift, prepare your staff with a list of open-ended questions to help shoppers discover the perfect gift. Make sure sales personnel know the stock and can intelligently interview shoppers. The goal of gift retailing is to have the

Non-native woods often are marketed here with names that play on the rich heritage of American hardwoods like oak, cherry or maple.
projects," he says.
"Don't be fooled," says Susan Regan, executive director of HMA's American Hardwood Information Center, at www.hardwoodinfo.com. "You have to be very careful and ask questions to make sure you're really getting what you want."
For example, so-called "Tasmanian oak" is not oak at all. It's eucalyptus from Down Under. "Brazilian cherry" isn't cherry either, and "Malaysian oak" actually is rubberwood from tropical rubber tree plantations.
"It's confusing," says Joe Boone Jr., chief executive officer of Internet retailer WoodFloorsOnline.com. "You have to do your homework and

Regan says it's not surprising imported woods adopt the names of American favorites. After all, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. "If our native-grown oak, maple and cherry aren't perceived as the standard," she asks, "why would others 'borrow' their names?"
When in doubt about the true identity of any wood, check the species' botanical name, suggests Regis Miller, a botanist with the Forest Products Laboratory of the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Forest Service.
The botanical name for a real oak tree, for example, will contain the word Quercr.rs, which means "a fine tree" in Latin. Review the species guide at www.hardwoodinfo.com for botanical names, descriptions and lore about major hardwood species found in the temperate forests of the United States.
Time-honored
American woods often are most desirable for traditional homes, Boone notes. He suggests homeowners may want a kitchen floor that complements their cherry or maple cabinets.
Seattle. Wa.. architect Stephen Bobbitt calls American hardwoods a classic. Maple beautifully complements the most updated looks, and white oak is at home in any setting. "You can use it in contemporary or traditional
Tomas Moreno, a designer for furniture maker Swartzendruber Hardwood Creations, Goshen, In., loves the "flakes" in the grain patterns of the quarter-sawn white oak that is a hallmark of the American turn-of-the-century Prairie and Arts & Crafts schools of architecture.
"Sometimes the flakes look like ripples from a pond emanating from one spot," he says. "Sometimes they almost look like tiger stripes. This wood is part of our heritage in the United States. It helps make our furniture true to form."
The color, grain pattern, hardness and luster of many imports differ from those of American hardwoods. Miller notes. "If you want the color and grain of American cherry, you have to buy American cherry," he says.
Some contractors unaccustomed to working with imported wood make more mistakes when installing exotic species, Miller says. "We have much more experience with our native species," he says.
Nena Donovan Levine, a kitchen designer and owner of N Design Inc., West Hartford. Ct.. also loves the diverse grains found in American hardwoods. "I like the ability to achieve a variety of colors, and the grain variations you get in one floor," she says. She especially admires what she calls the "rich, sensual" grain of cherry. "It's so inviting to the touch," she adds.
Miller agrees: "When you look at cherry in furniture or flooring, you always see a bit of sapwood here and there. I like that, and I always look for it. Cherry has such a distinctive growth ring and grain."

Insuring longevity Benefits of key person life insurance
By Paul C. MacDonald
qEVERAL years ago. I worked for \Ja manufacturins firm where several key executives riere returning from
a trip when the small plane they flying in crashed into the moun and all were killed.
The family-owned company left with one brother to run the company and several widows as shareholders. The sudden, simultaneous deaths of several key managers put a tremendous amount of financial and emotional pressure on the one surviving brother, and soon thereafter, he had a heart attack and died. The company was eventually sold to an outsider for pennies on the dollar. This is not an uncommon story.
In a short span of time, the manufacturer was reduced from a highly profitable company to one that nearly went out of business. Whv did this happen?
Mostcompanies
realize that their key people have a tremendous impact on the profitability of their business.
One reason was undoubtedly a lack of top management talent. A good manager is hard to find, and small businesses have trouble keeping more than one or two because the company isn't large enough to offer enough room for more to grow.
A second reason may have been a tightening of credit. Banks don't like risk. They like to see a strong balance sheet, a strong income statement, a well thought out business plan, a his-
tory of good execution, and stability among the managers who previously achieved success.
Another reason may have been that the new leadership wasn't able to lead the employees as well as the recently departed managers did. People can be in shock for a long time, and much of their creativity and energy can be lost while they grieve. There is also a tendency to canonize a good person who died too soon, making it more difficult for successors to bejudged fairly.
I don't know why the company struggled, but I do know that a key person life insurance policy would have helped. Most companies recognize that their key people have a tremendous impact on the profitability of their business. A president, a top salesperson, or a financial officer can be difficult to replace. Their sudden loss can be devastating.
However, if the company had purchased a key person life insurance policy, it would have received cash at a time when it needed it most. Companies can have lines of credit frozen, or even called at the death of a key executive, so a sudden influx of tax-free money certainly helps.
Who should a company insure and how much insurance should they purchase? What type of insurance should be bought? lnsure any execulive you
absolutely cannot afford to lose. Given enough time, almost anybody can be replaced, but if death were sudden and unexpected, what impact would that have? Think about what the loss of a key financial officer or alesman could mean to your busiss. If you couldn't replace your key executives tomorrow, then you probablv need to insure them.
As for the amount of coverage a company needs, there is no right or wrong answer. I generally recommend purchasing the maximum coverage that can be obtained. An insurance company will typically offer l0 to 20 times an executive's salary as coverage.
As for what type of insurance should be purchased, the answer varies. If the company is younger and cash is tight. term insurance is very inexpensive initially. If the company has good cash flow and is more mature. then a permanent insurance plan with a high early cash value can be utilized. This can serve to provide a "golden handcuff'to keep the key execulive from leaving to a competitor and then coming back and raiding key management. It also has minimal impact on the company's balance sheet.
For those who own or manage a business. make sure to protect it. Remember, the rank and file employees are counting on you for ajob, and your families are counting on the income you derive from the business.

Firm Adds RF Vacuum Kilns
Forest Grove Lumber Co., McMinnville, Or., has begun using radio frequency vacuum technology to dry timbers.
With the purchase of two 22.20 radio frequency vacuum kilns from HeatWave Technologies, Forest Grove is now able to supply large dimension Douglas fir timbers that are dried within four to six days-compared to weeks using conventional drying methods.
"Incorporating HeatWave's technology into our business strategy will allow us to provide our customers with a ready supply of high-quality, thoroughly dry timber products," said Sid Smith, president of Forest Grove Lumber. "We anticipate that our distribution network will expand significantly as a result of the increased demand for our quality Tru-Dry RFV kiln dried Douglas fir timbers."
Drying timber in RFV kilns reportedly reduces drying times, shrinking, checking, cupping, twisting or warping, and dries wood evenly to the core l9%o or less with no wet or over-dried spots. In addition, the kilns accommodate lumber up to 40-ft. long.
Tru-Dry is available in S4S, Full Sawn, or with Accuruff or Circle Sawn textures.

Palco Repaints ltself Green
Pacific Lumber Co., Scotia, Ca., is now marketing itself simply as "Palco" in an effort to rebrand itself as a more environmentally friendly company.
Palco has unveiled a new logowith a green recycling icon shaped like a tree-and a new mission statement committing it to being a "leader in environmental stewardship."
According to spokesman Jim Branham, Palco feels it is misunderstood and has not received the credit it deserves for recent improvements.
"We're not just talking the talk, we're walking the walk," Branham said. "We are a more sustainable company. We're operating to higher environmental standards than any timber company in the state. We're proud of who we are."
BMD Adds Forest Products Building Material Distributors,
Galt. Ca.. has formed a new Forest Products Group to sell structural panels and engineered wood products.
As the channel of distribution continues to consolidate suppliers in order to lower procurement costs, the company believes that adding new product groups improves BMD's alignment with its customer's goals, according to Gary Tabor, v.p and general mgr.building products division.
"A component of the company's objective in redefining building products distribution is finding new ways to shorten the buying cycle, and drive costs out of the procurement process for our customers," said Tabor. "Our people, services, technology and products all contribute to that goal."
Depot Scraps Woodland DC
Home Depot has abandoned Plans to build a 91,000 sq. ft. DC in Woodland, Wa. The comPanY had proposed building on a 34-acre site between the I-5 and the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks.
There was speculation that Home Depot may reconsider distribution methods throughout its whole system. A senior civil engineer at URS Corp. of Seattle, Phil Newton, said his understanding is that Home Depot is considering adding enclosed warehouse space to some of its DCs.
The plan had called for oPen sides at the Woodland facility, which would allow for large shipments to be dropped easily at one end, and then
broken down and repackaged for distribution to various stores.
The company may come back to that area at a later date.
Arch Signs Trademark Deal
Bayer AG has agreed to allow Arch Treatment Technologies to use Bayer's Preventol trademark in promoting Wolmanized Natural Select wood. Preventol is the trademarked fungicide used in the coPPer azole preservative that protects Natural Select wood.
"The real impact of the agreement," explained Arch v.p. Tom Kyzer, "is
that it advances the relationshiP between Bayer, an internationallY respected producer of chemical ingredients, and Arch, a leader in wood preservation, as the science of preservation continues to evolve."
Dr. Navnit Upadhyay, marketing manager of specialty Products at Bayer Chemicals Corp., echoed the mutual possibilities: "Our knowledge in organic chemistry is an excellent match for Arch's expertise in wood preservation. The treated wood market is looking for preservatives that rely less on traditional metals and more on organic components."

Boise Adopts Green Policy
Boise has vowed to stop buying wood from "endangered" forests, and received certification of its Northwest fi ber procurement operations.
Boise agreed to eliminate the purchase of wood products from areas that have been "identified and mapped" by conservation groups, such as the Rainforest Action Network. Next year, the company will stop cutting timber from old growth forests in the U.S., as well as Chile, Indonesia, and Canada's boreal forests.
In the meantime, Boise said it will also start encouraging its suppliers to do the same by giving purchasing preference to those that provide paper and wood products from independent- ly certified and healthy managed forests. The company plans to track the source ofpaper and wood products it receives to help enforce the new pollcy.
Boise said its actions make it "the first U.S. forest products company to adopt a comprehensive environmental statement and the first distributor of wood and paper products to extend an environmental policy to its suppliers."
This move comes at the same the
company is seeking to buy the OfficeMax Inc. superstore chain for about $1.15 billion in cash and stock. However, Boise officials said the timing is a coincidence.
There is speculation that Boise may have been losing business due to its previous refusal to avoid all endangered forests. Activists estimate up to two dozen corporate and academic customers dropped contracts with the company over the past two years, including copy company Kinko's.
"We decided we ought to make sure what we are doing is aligned with what our customers are doing," said John Bender. Boise's senior v.p.building solutions.
In addition, Boise's Western Oregon fiber procurement operations were certified by Pricewaterhouse Coopers LLP through an independent, third-party audit. The audit also recertified Boise's forest management practices on more than 300,000 acres of its timberland.
Builders Prefer Wood Panels
When using structural panels in home construction, builders overwhelmingly prefer engineered wood
products, such as OSB and plywood, according to a new survey.
A Forintek Canada Corp. study indicated builders are continually satisified with the two types of wood products in single-family residential construction. Builders gave wood structural panels a high satisfaction rating and reported they use them 80% of the time.
An initial report based on research detailed the residential construction industry's current demand for wall product, product usage and possible future use in prefabricated building. The primary concern of builders was that the wall be straight and square, followed by on-site concerns, such as speed of assembly, ease of handling, and level of waste.
The researchers concluded panelized walls represent I8Vo of the singlefamily construction market share in the U.S., and more than 407o of builders have tried panelized walls, suggesting there is a growth market for them in single-family residential construction, based on demographic forecasts of qualified labor shortages and probable consolidation of residential builders.

"With the qualified labor force declining and manufacturers consolidating, this should lead to more inplant manufacturing of housing components," said Craig Adair, director of market research at APA.
The results of the first studY spurred the researchers to delve deeper into the specific markets of wall panels and roof trusses, which identified specific species of lumber preferred by manufacturers, and consumer satisfaction rating levels of lumber and structural panels.
The second study confirmed the same trend as the first one-panelized walls are the trend of the future in single-family home construction.
With OSB reigning as the top sheathing used at over 7O7o and plywood at just under l07o nationwide in 2001, wood structural panels dominate the panelized wall market.
Nationwide, wall panelizers' use of other sheathing products, such as foam, fiberboard and foil-faced kraftboard remain at less than 57o.
The percentage of panels consumed varied per region as well. Plywood stood at 22Vo in the West, but only 57o in the North and 4Vo in the South.

Stud Mill Begins Production
Roseburg Forest Products has begun producing studs at its new mill in Dillard, Or.
The facility utilizes state-of-the-art technology to maximize the use of wood fiber in the production of premium studs. A large, high-speed 353 barker significantly increases the number of logs processed per hour. The blocks are laser scanned and positioned in a double carriage end dogger for optimum cutting precision.
It is estimated that Roseburg's log to lumber conversion ratio will increase 4Vo. All trimming and sorting is done automatically. The sorter/stacker sorts by grade, size and length at a rate of 185 studs per minute.
"Roseburg engineers, in partnership with several sawmill equipment manufacturers, have created a facility that will produce over 360 million bd. ft. annually," said Rick Saunders, plant manager.
The facility increases Roseburg's production capacity 75Vo, making it one of the largest stud production facilities in North America.
Roseburg produces green Douglas fir, K.D. Doug fir, K.D. hem-fir, K.D.
lodgepole, pine (ESLP) in lx4,2x4, 2x6,4x4,4x6 stud sizes. Grades are C & Btr., Premier, Select Struc. , #1 & Btr., #2 & Btr., Std. & Btr., Stud Grade.
Logging Resumes In Montana
Delayed by nearby wildfires, Plum Creek Timber Co., Seattle, Wa., has resumed logging in western Montana where the company has 1.1 million acres of unburned forests.
"We're going to get everything up and running as quickly and safely as possible," said Tom Ray, general manager for Northwest resources in Columbia Falls. Loggers began sal-
vaging lumber in September on the 45,000 acres of timberland that has burned since July, in which the company lost 37o of its 1.4 million acres in the region.
In August, loggers were pulled off the land because of fire danger, and Plum Creek was forced to close its mills in Pablo and Kasanka when they ran out of logs.
"We have foresters and wildlife biologists looking at the bumed areas right now," Ray said. "Then we'll formulate our plans on how best to salvage what has burned."
Once deliveries resume and inventories build to sufficient levels, the idled mills will be reopened.

tf it ain' t broke, don' t fix ir is the ! order of the day for the upcoming Iannual NAWLA Traders Market
November l3-15 in Dallas, Tx.
The North American Wholesale Lumber Association expects minimal tweaking for the Sth edition of its popular show. Organizers don't want to mess with a good thing: to gather under one roof as manY suppliers and distributors as possible. It's the one major show that brings together the people who do the actual trading. A central location, minimal rates to attend and exhibit, compact schedule are designed to encourage maximum participation.
Because the show is held on a Friday and Saturday and there aren't an abundance of peripheral events, sales reps don't have to take too much time away from the office. In addition, the show remains open just four hours the first day, five hours the second.
Nonetheless, expect several minor changes to be implemented to make each attendee's days more productive and overall trip more worthwhile.
. The show will spotlighting exhibitors' new products and services,
and NAWLA's on-site Traders Market Bulletin will call attention to booths that have something new to introduce. The show is held at the end of the fall buying season specifically so traders can learn about

The grand opening luncheon will feature "down home" comedian Buzz Sutherland, winner of five ComedY Artist of the Year awards and two Comedian of the Year awards.

. Exhibiting technology providers have been taken out of a separate side room and folded back into the main exhibit hall.
Day-long seminars will address Banking & Credit and Professional Selling Techniques, with a half-day educational program on "The Good News... Wood!"
. Russ Taylor, publisher and editor of International Wood Markets Research Inc., will analyze global
Although the aisles are inevitably packed with up to 2,000 attendees and more than 250 exhibitors, strict attendance requirements guarantee every person on the floor has been Prequalified. Admission to the NAWLA Traders Market is restricted to "bona fide wholesalers," including wholesaler' processors, foreign wholesalers, and off-shore agents. Manufacturers, service providers and importers are eligible to attend only if they exhibit.
That means no manufacturer representatives, retailers, buying cooperatives, builders, contractors or nonexhibiting primary manufacturers, service providers or importers may attend.
For more information on attending or exhibiting, contact NAWLA at (S00) 527-8258, Fax 847-870-020r, or visit www.lumber.org.

ldaho Institution Begins Liquidation
Following a liquidation sale that began last month, Irrigators Lumber, Caldwell. Id.. will close its doors after 83 years.
The 5,000-sq. ft. store and lumberyard has been for sale since June. This summer the partners made the decision to close, after giving up the Ace Hardware brand earlier this year because of the costs associated with being a franchise.
Even if the economy revived, part owner Bob Crawford said construction of the big boxes in Nampa foretold more competition that would make it tough for the small company to compete.
"Before 9lll, we were going into the winter with some very nice jobs for new homes. But when 9lll hit, the builders backed off, and our sales went way down to nothing," said Crawford.
Kent Bacon, who owns a small part of the business, said through the years customers who enjoyed the small-town atmosphere of the store would travel from Utah, eastern Idaho and California to shop there.
Opened in 1920, the store mainly catered to home builders and do-ityourselfers, but also canied the usual assortment of hardware goods, and a small gift department that carried candles, throw rugs and collectibles.
Depot Upgrades SecuritY
Home Depot is installing digital video surveillance in all its retail locations over the next few months to reduce shrinkage and deter fraud.
The new technology will enable the retailer to store digital images and e-mail them to law enforcement agencies. The security cameras can also
help deter and investigate cases of identity theft.
"We are employing [this] technology to meet a number of imPortant objectives," said Marvin Ellison, Home Depot's v.p.-loss prevention.
One of the objectives is "generating business intelligence that can be used to improve merchandising," Ellison said.
The surveillance technologY will be provided by Verint Systems, a Mel-ville, N.Y., supplier of softwarebased solutions for communications interception, video security and business intelligence.
Home Depot expects to install the new video cameras throughout its 1,576 stores.

Panel Questions ITC Ruling
A NAFTA panel has given the U.S. International Trade Commission 100 days to back up its ruling that
Canadian softwood imports harm the American timber industry.
The five-member panel-three American, two Canadian-issued a unanimous binding ruling Sept. 5, saying thar the ITC failed to follow its own rules, ignored evidence, and based its forecast of a threat on "considerable speculation and conjecture."
Although Canadians and softwood tariff opponents hailed the ruling as a major victory, U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports spokesman John Ragosta said it would be easy for the ITC to provide the NAFTA panel with evidence.
Both parties also hold out hoPe the matter can be nesotiated.

Plywood Makers Look At Soy
Pacific Adhesives Co., Portland, Or., is testing a new, soy-based plywood glue in pilot programs to replace animal blood protein currently used in plywood glue formulas.
These tests are an intermediate stage between the National Center for Agricultural Utilization Research, Peoria, Illinois, and mill trials, which use the actual volume of glue required for one day's work.
"Concerns about animal blood's limited supply and health issues prompted our search for alternative protein extenders," said Milagros Hojilla-Evangelista, a research associate in the Plant Polymer Research Unit at ARS.
The plywood glues were designed to be applied by "foam extrusion," which is one of four conventional ways the industry applies glue to wood. The extenders are substances added to an adhesive to reduce the amount of resin required.
As part of their evaluations, Hojilla-Evangelista and ARS technician Rick Haig checked each experimental formulation for its foaming ability, refoaming ability, foam strand quality, and adhesive properties.
"Early results have confirmed our laboratory findings about foaming properties and adhesive quality," said Hojilla-Evangelista.
NCAUR researchers tested three different soy glue formulations by varying the amount of soy extenderadding either soy flour, or soy concentrate.

Soy flour has been found to make the best glue, and the glue ends up being 50 cents less expensive per 100 kilograms than conventional formulations. Flour makes up 3.5Vo to 5.5Vo of the glue mix, with the adhesive resin being the primary component.

blood protein in glue because soY flour contains less protein than animal blood. Increasing the amount of soy flour produced glue that foamed better at less cost.
"We have to get the amount of soY just right to produce a glue that will foam as well as conventional glue, and at the same time be as adhesive," said Hojilla-Evangelista. "Other benefits of our foamed soy-based glue are that it requires less drying time, uses less water and produces less waste than conventional plywood glues."
The new glue could create an additional domestic market for nearlY 50,000 bushels of soybeans annually.
Eleven plywood mills in North America currently use foam extrusion technology: two each in Louisiana and Washington and one each in Idaho, Oregon, Montana, Arkansas, Mississippi, Texas, and British Columbia.
The latest foam extrusion system reportedly was installed last year in Hamina, Finland, and is the first plywood mill in that country to convert to foam extrusion application because of Finland's new pollution regulations.

Hardware Store Opens Big
Heritage Hardware recently held a grand opening for its store in Santa Paula, Ca, to show off the new. familvowned facility that is triple the size of its previous location.
Owners Raymond and Brenda Padgett offered a number of sale items, free hot dogs, punch and popcorn, and hired a clown who painted faces and made balloon animals for the children. Also, each day the first 100 female customers received a rose, and the first 100 customers who bought something received free energy-saving light bulbs. There was even a grand prize drawing for an all-expense-paid trip to Catalina Island.
"The community has been very supporting of our store over the years, and we wanted to kick off the opening of our larger, newer location with a celebration that had something for everyone," said Brenda Padgett.
The Padgetts decided to build a ground-up store to replace their 97-year-old, 4,100-sq. ft. facility to keep up
with the community's growth by expanding their product lines, and to better meet the needs of local do-it-yourselfers and pro customers. They thought broadening their array of merchandise would increase customer count and averase transaction figures.
The new 14,000-sq. ft. Heritage Hardware store designed by Do it Best Corp.'s team offers free delivery of paint, pipe cutting and threading, rekeying and additional lumber and building materials, including cement and mortar products. The new store also has more parking space, 29 aisles, and a back warehouse.
To promote the grand opening, Heritage placed ads in newspapers, handed out flyers and advertised on two local radio stations in English and Spanish.

Hard Surface Flooring Picks Up
The demand for hard surface flooring in the U.S. is expected to increase 3.3Vo annually for the next four years, totaling 9 billion sq. ft., according to a new study from The Freedonia Group.
The increase is expected to be stimulated by rebounding commercial construction and residential repairs and improvements, as well as product innovations, such as mechanical locking laminates.
The laminate, wood and ceramic tile flooring segments are forecast to capture the market share from carpets and rugs, which traditionally have been the strongest flooring category.
Since its introduction in the mid-1990s, laminate flooring demand has been growing annually at a high doubledigit pace. By 2007, laminate flooring is expected to account for more than 20Vo of the demand for non-resilient flooring and more than lU%o of the demand for hard surface flooring.
The demand for wood and ceramic tile flooring will be spurred by an increasing preference among consumers for
high-end products made of natural materials, according to the study.
Until now, vinyl flooring products, such as sheet, tile and composition tile, have dominated the hard surface flooring market. Although vinyl flooring is anticipated to continue to account for the greatest share by volume of all hard surface flooring shipments through 2007, its overall share in terms of value is expected to fall just under onehalf in 2007-which is down from almost three-fourths in 1992. The decrease is expected from competition of advanced and premium non-resilient flooring products, such as laminate and wood floor coverings, which are increasing in popularity.
