"l)o s'c rccognizc," Fullarvay asked, "that statism is lrcing sold to the rank antl filc of our pcople by the sinister mctho<l of llromising more security and a Inore abundant life rvithout any socialistic label attactred and rvithout any a<lmission that such a plan can result only in heavier and hcavier taxes, bigger and bigger central governtrrent, more :tntl more fe<leral controls and, finally, tlte loss of individual libcrty which is thc incvitable pricc of socialism?"
"l)o n'e allllrcciate that this departure fronr our tradition:rl free cntcrprise system is not just happening but is the result of a definite plan? Do rve realize that this plan is being fostered by a specific group of individuals?"
Fullarval' laid clown this plan of industry action to pronrote bctter untlerstanding of Arnericarr freedom of en<leavor:
San Francisco, Feb. l0-American industry must fight for human freedom and free endeavor or America will suffer the inevitable restrictive consequences of statism, more than 20O of the west's top lumber executives were told today.
Speaking before the final session of tl-re Western Pine association's two-day annual meeting in the Palace hotel, S. V. Fullaway, Jr., secretary-manager, told leaders of tl-re west's largest industry that every citizen of this country is now faced with the immediate and vital issue of state socialism versus individual freedom.
The decision, he said, is certain to affect the life of every American regardless of occupation or financial status. Vital to the issue is the part American management must play in selling the system of free enterprise to its organization's personnel.
"We must," the Portland lumberman said, "get back to first principles. Basically we must realize that freedom is
l. We must vote in every election and encourage as many others as possible to do so.
2. We must hclp our employes and all others with rvhom we come in contact to understancl what is really happening in this country and what are the real factors in our situation.
3. We must constantly make our vies's known to our rcpresentatives in the Congress and ttrge others to clo likewise.
4. We mttst sell "Opportttnity" in Anlerica, not "Security," for real security exists only in progress and progress is possible only through opportunity.
"The charge of being alarmist is expected," Fullaway declared. "Those rvho are responsible for the plans to dcstroy our free enterprise system are cultivating an attitude in the minds of our people that anyone 'rvho opposes the welfare state or individual socialistic proposals is an alarmist or an enemy of the common man. WANTED: Some Words. The other day a lot of grain elevator men from the middle west appeared before the Senate Agricultural Committee in Washington and described the operations of the federal government as represented by its Commodity Credit Corporation as "IN' CREDIBLY INEFFICIENT.'' ***
If this agency, which handles the crop buying operations of the government, is "incredibly inefficient" with regard to its grain operations, what words that ever fell from mortal mouth could ever even attempt to describe its efforts in other directions, such as its handling of the potato and egg situations? * ,F :r
To charge the government with nothing worse than "incredible inefficiency" in these directions, would be a supreme masterpiece of understatement. The more I read of the facts and figures in these directions, the more futile seems the English language as a medium of description and thought exchange. * ,k ,k
Words "like cannonballs," as Emerson put it, fall far short of the mark, and only serve to demonstrate the complete inadequacy of Mr. Webster's famous book. I have read hundreds of editorials by the strongest writers in the country, and every one of them seems stymied in the effort to describe the unbelievable idiocy of the egg and potato situations. They end up by almost stuttering. There are others, of course, but these two stand out.
You've heard and ,."a Lr, "0"* the potato situation, and more in recent weeks than ever before. Countless millions of bushels of this good food which the government bought for the one and only purpose of keeping up the market price of potatoes, are to be destroyed. They are bought at high prices, then either destroyed or sold for less than nothing for other than human use. The government gives them chemical treatment to make them unfit for human consumption. The fact that there are hungry people all around these potato piles, enters into the business not at all.
And now comes the latest and worst side of the sorry
business. Canadian potatocr are being brought into the Southeastern and Southern ports of this country by the shipload, and sold to our American pcople for less money than thcy can buy our native product for. Can such things be? We AmericanE pay with our tax money for the millions of bushele of potatoes thc govcrnment buye and wastes, and then can buy foreign Potatoet delivered here, for lees than the domestic price.
Suggestions from countless people that good food be distributed in some fashion to the needy, fall on deaf ears. Again I recall what a simple Louisiana farmer said to me once when he saw them plowing under a field of half grown sugar cane. He said: "Do you think God will forgive them for such a sin?" I didn't think He would then. I don't think He will now. There can be no explaining, no forgiving such nottoT.
Last reports state that something like FIFTY MILLION BUSHELS of potatoes will be rendered unfit for human consumption in the near future, and then allowed to rot away. Do you wonder f search in vain for words to express my indignation? When someone recently said that "our farm economics defy all the battering rams of human logic," he, likewise, was an understatement champion. Personally, I hope that the guilty ones some day have to pay through the nose for the wanton destruction of food in a hungrt *or,,ld.
And the egg mess grows messier with every day that passes. One editor writes that the government egg program shows better than anything else, "the absurdity, the insanity" of the whole program. The egg buying project in 1949 was "the reducto ad absurdum" of the price support program, he says. It did not cost the taxpayers as much money as some other crop supports, but its complete absurdity seems more glaring than the others when exposed to the spotlight of common;.T..
The government now owns, mostly in dried form, more than two-and-a-half billions of eggs. In spite of which they are stepping up their egg buying. In January this year they bought and took off the market over five million pounds of dried eggs, as compared with about three million pounds in January of last year. Reports say they have built an extension to the tremendous storage cave in Kansas where they have been storing eggs for some time now. Buying of eggs will really go into high gear in the spring when the weather always increases the egg production. The government has purchased enough eggs to last this nation for four years if every hen quit laying to-

morrow. But eggE must stay high, so the government must kcep buying. And storage spaces must bc enlarged. And every American through both open and hidden taxes, pays his share of these billions of eggs that will never be used for human consumption. Like it?
A reporter for the Wall Strect Journal recently visited the headquarters of thc Department of Agriculture in Washington, one of the most gigantic of all bureaus. On one floor he visited the department where an army of people is engaged in only one activity, spending billions of tax money for the purpose of keeping the price of agricultural products high. Next door to this department the reporter found another operation where several hundred civil employees are kept continually busy spending three hundred millions of dollars a year for the purpose of INCREASING AGRICULTURAL PRODUCTION. This department pays as much as $2500 a year to farmers for improving their soil to raise bigger crops. And in still another department he found a small army whose job it is to spend over one hundred millions of dollars a year on agricultural research. So here were several groups of men, some spending billions to keep up the price of food to the American consumer by taking food off the market, and others seeking to increase the production of food so that there will be more for the government to buy with the taxpayers' money; more to take out of circulation to keep the prices high.
As the editor of the Los Angeles Times puts it-"It's the basic idea that's haywire. The basic idea is that men in Washington can regulate the agricultural economy of the nation. They can't, and that's all there is to it. Especially when they are working at cross-purposes." But what a price the American taxpayer is paying to finance these lunatic experiments !
And that term "taxpayer" takes in every human being in this country who spends as much as a nickel for anything. It means the poorest as well as the richest. For all things are taxed, and the so-called "hidden taxes" are very substantial. The American Taxpayers' Association, of Washington, D.C., which devotes its energies exclusively to the study of taxes, says that there are 78 different taxes on a quart of milk, 151 different taxes on a loaf of bread,
100 on m egg, 125 on a cotton dress, 116 on a man'c suit of clothes, 154 on a cake of soap, and 201 on a gallon of gasoline'
So, no matter whoever you are, wherever you may be, or how small may be your income, you are intereeted in the matters mentioned in this Etory; you, too, are one of those who pay the bill for the potato mess, the egg meEs' the butter mess, the grain me88, and all the other mesoes originating in Washington today.
Perhaps, come to tr,i"i "l it] J,rnior, we tax-burdened folks should be grateful to the licker and tobacco users of the nation for doing so much to pay for the money the government urastes on potatoes, and eggs, and various other things. For the figures show that in 1949 the licker taxes amounted to $2,204,300,000, and the tobacco taxes were $1,319,976,501. The total employment taxes amounted to $2,459,700,000, so you can see how much the smokers and drinkers have contributed to the government's support. Both the licker and tobacco taxes increased last year over the previous year.
The late Dr. Spengler, in,lo*, philosopher, and writer, may have been correct when he advised all men who want to get ahead in this country today, who want to rise above the level of mediocrity, to attach themselves to the government. He said it did not matter what line of effort you choose, government service offers the greatest opportunity. While admitting thatDr. Spengler undoubtedly "had something" when he offered that advice, I still think that the route to economic prosperity is the rural route; we should all become farmers, with prosperity of an abiding character guaranteed by the government and by the citizenship in general. Yes, Junior, I think we'd better get ourselves fitted with overalls-and Cadillacs.

a perforated, fibrous acoustical rileis available now to retail lumber dealers in Southern California through E. J. STANTON & SON, Inc., pioneer wholesale distributor of lumber products. The need for sound condirioning is recognized today by thousands of stores, resraurants) offices, and other places where noise causes inefficiency and discomfort. And, as more and more CUSHIONTONE is sold, this demand grows larger day by day. Each new job promores the idea of acoustical treatment. CUSHIONTONE is an ideal product for sale by lumber dealers because it is economical and easy to install. No special tools or skills are requireci on most ;'obs. Tiles are nailed to wood furing or cemented to any sound, level surface with Acoustic Cement. Made of stron& Iightweighr fiberboard, CUSHIONTONE is factory painted white both on surface and bevels. The Plumber'g Dilemma
A plumber wrotc to the National Bureau of Standarde and eaid that he had found that hydrochloric acid opcns plugged pipes quickly, and wanted to know whether it was a wise thing to use for that purpose. A scientist at the Bureau replied as follows:
"The uncertain reactive ProceEses of hydrochloric acid place pipe in jeopardy when alkalinity is involved. The efficacy of this solution is indisputable, but the corrosive residue is incompatible with metallic performance."
, The plumber wrote back, thanking the Bureau for telling him that his method was all right. The scientist was disturbed by the misunderstanding, and showed the correspondence to the boss-another scientist-who immediately wrote the plumber:
"Hydrochloric acid generates a toxic and noxious residue which will produce submuriate invalidating reactions' Consequently, some alternative procedure is preferable"'
Again the plumber wrote back that he agreed with the Bureau that hydrochloric acid works just fine' Greatly disturbed, the two scientists took their problem to their top boss. The next day the plumber received this telegram:..DON'T USE HYDROCHLORIC ACID. IT EATS HELL OUT OF THE PIPES.''

Prepcrredness
"In youth acquire that which you require for the deprivations of old age; and if you are mindful that old age has wisdom for its food, you will so exert yourself in your youth that your old age will not lack sustenance. As a well spent day brings happy sleep, so a life well spent brings a happy death."-Da Vinci'
John On Fellowship
"He that loveth his brother abideth in the light, and there is none occasion of stumbling in him.
"But he that hateth his brother is in darkness, and knoweth not whither he goeth, because that darkness hath blinded his eyes.
"That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you that ye may also have fellowship with us'"
My Credo
I know that happiness is to be found only in surrendering in obedience to Goodness. I am quite willing to accept as a fact that I show wisdom when I learn as much as I can of the fundamental laws of the universe and work in harmony with them. I must be a giver, and I must also be a receiver. For me to explain my Credo in words, would mean little. I know that at the last I must be judged,
not alone by what I write, but by every exPression in my daily lifc. What I do on the golf course and in the office and at a meeting of the Advertising Club is of just as great importance a8 what I do in church. And what I do on Monday is of just aB great importance ae what I do on Sunday-and no more.-Thomas Dreier.
The Mcn Who Delivers
There's a man in the world who is never turned down, Wherever he chances to straY'
He gets the glad hand in the populous town, Or out where the farmers make haY. He's greeted with pleasure on deserts of sand, And deep in the aisles of the woods, Wherever he goes there's a welcoming handHe's the man who delivers the goods.
The failures of life sit around and complain, The gods haven't treated them white; They've lost their umbrellas whenever there's rain, And they haven't their lanterns at night. Men tire of failures who fill with their sighs The air of their own neighborhoods, But the man who is greeted with love-lighted eyes, Is the man who delivers the goods.
One fellow is lazy and watches the clock, And waits for the whistle to blow; And one has a hammer with which he will knock, And one has a storY of woe. One has a grouch on, a temper that's bad, Another's a creature of moods; Then here's to the joyous and rollicking ladThe man who delivers the goods.
In One Day
"The ewe that strayed from the fold lived many years in one day, and died at a great age-at sunset'-Thornton Wilder.
A Vice President ProbcblY
A family moved from the big city to the suburbs and decided to get a watch dog to guard their premises at night. So they went to a near-by kennels and bought the biggest dog they found for sale.
Shortly afterwards their place was entered and robbed while the big dog slept. So they went to the dog dealer and told him about it.
"Well, what you need now," said the dog man, "is a little dog to wake up the big dog."
