Speaking of books, the trouble with almost all the literature of the present day and age-especially the books-is that it is just plain, lousy trash. Yes, lousy is the word.
With regard to nearly l*r, i""u that has come to my attention and consumed my precious reading time-for all reading time is precious-the same thing can truthfully be said: The covers are too far apart. They should be stuck together.
,1. ,1. *
That could be one of the great reasons why our public taste has fallen so leqT-se unbelievably, immeasurably low -in so many directions. A pessimist might remark-and back his remarks with plenty of proof-that as a nation we seem to have lost our good taste. Read your headlines, and see what I mean'
England has pulled herself back from the brink of disaster which she courted for five long years. A nation "whom kings could not conquer nor sophists deceive" was close to the very brink of the precipice from which there could have been no return. A 7S-year-old hero led his people back from the brink, and turned their faces once again toward the promised land.
There were many noisy men over there, prating learnedly about economics, money, and the science of government, who couldn't tell an economic fact from a hot tamale. And they led the parade for a long time. We are using the same sort of wisdom in this country today, in various ways. Consider the matter of potatoes, €ggs, etc., and you'll understand. Some of our philosophies in other directions are just as practical. And, speaking of such matters:
rn Southern Californi": ;, l, *o-.n have devised a plan for fighting the now rather odious crop control efforts of the Government. They say they are going to buy a lot of the potatoes that have been dyed blue to make them unfit for human consumption, and they are going to take them from house to house when politics get hot, and show them to the housewives. They contend that these potatoes which the government has bought and spoiled, are in fact much better quality potatoes than the ones now being offered for sale in the local markets.
So, they will show that the potato mess is even \ rorse than it has been pictured. Not only docs the government take the taxpayers' money and buy potatoes and deetroy them for human use, making the public pay prevailing high prices for what potatoes they get, but furthermore these spoiled potatoes were bigger and better potatoes than the ones offered in the markets. The government sells these blued potatoes for use for hog and cattle feed at one cent a hundred pounds, and then the housewife pays six or more cents per pound for inferior potatoes in the market. That kind of campaigning all over this land might do a lot of good'
Want to know something, Junior? In some ways I'm a good deal of an unbeliever, and I'll tell you about a case where I am. Take the atom bomb. I've been trying to get up my courage to say what I think about that for some time, and here it goes. I don't believe that Russia has the atom bomb. I don't believe she ever exploded one. And I think a bright and intelligent jury right now would agree with me.
The evidence is clear ",lU *"t""ive that while we have learned nothing whatsoever about the Russians, those dumb-looking and vicious-talking dodoes have learned a whale of a lot about us; particularly about our unbelievable gullibility. And I am sure that no government ever got more fun out of needling another, than those Ruskies have been having with us since the day the war ended. lfere's what I mean about the bomb business. Give it thought.
Two years ago MolotoJ JtJ the pubtic announcement over here that the atom bomb was no secret-Russia already had it. Did it stir up a furor? Not so you could notice. Not a ripple. What did we reply? We said-"Nuts!" Just like that, and went o" o"r**:rry way.
So Russia took another course. A few months back we suddenly "discovered" for ourselves, mind you, that Russia has the bomb, just like Molotov said. The news this time was not shoved in our teeth like the first time. It "leaked out," and we picked it up. And this time we take it dead seriously. We know there have been a lot of information leaks from our side, so we agree that she really has the bomb. Why the difference? ***
My personal opinion is the same as it was two years ago when Molotov was so anxious to have us think they had the bomb. It's still "Nuts !" Listen, Junior ! If Russia actually had the bomb two years ago, would Molotov have said so? Have they ever been caught telling the truth about anything? And, if they had it now, do you really think it

Mengel Solid-Core Flush Doors represent a radically new Standard of Stability. Their unique construcdon does not undertake the impossible job of preoenting expansion and contraction caused by changes in humidityit controls these forces to an extent hitherto unknown.
All Mengel solid hardwood core members are deeply slotted at frequent intervals both with and across the grain. These slots efectioery absorb cxp4nston and contraction, Thus the solid wood betuteen the slots can expand and contract as the weather changes, without in any way affecting the stability of the door itself! Futhermore, Mengel's exclusive key-lock dovetails and waterproof hot-press phenolic bonding keep the entire assemblypernanentll tight.
Get all the facts about Mengel Solid-Core Flush Doors-the rcally stable doors that co-operate with nature on the inside, ignore it on the outside! The coupon will bring you full information.

would have "leaked out"? Have we actually put any dentg in that iron curtain, think you? When leaks appear in that curtain, I cling tight to the opinion that a guy named Stalin has opened a faucet. ***
The conviction is Btrong with me that we have only discovered what they intended we should. I can imagine those Ruskies laughing in their big whiskcrs while they planned and planted the evidence that they had the bomb. I'll bet it took no Sherlock Holrrles to make that discovery. Rocky Jordan would have figuled it out without even liaving his CafeTambourine.
'
* * 13
And, since the news about their having the bomb "leaked out," Comrade Viehinsky and others have taken the whole world into their confidence, which confidence was formerly frozen and impenetrable. Now they tell us that they not only have the bomb and have had it for years, but that moreover they are generations ahead of us in the scientific use of the nuclear forces in other directions. And we poor dopes print that stuff and shiver, just as fast as they turn it out. Knowing these monkeys as we do, isn't their entire attitude with regard to this matter double-barreled and copper-riveted proof that IT ISN'T SO?
{. ,N. {.
Now I'm asking you like a friend: If they had the bomb two years ago, would they have said so? And if they had it now, would the fact ever have "leaked out"?
rl.**
There are things afoot today that cause the thinking man to wonder what in the bloody blazes is happening to the once stout people of this once great country. Let me mention one right now that has been causing me to wonder of late whether we have become a soft and decadent nation: whether we American men are still fit to bear the kingly crowns of American sovereigns. I speak of the horrid upsweep of crimes by grown men against little girls, reported in the court news from all parts of the country. "Molestation" it is generally called. ft means that innocent little girls are forced into the leprous hands of human harpies and sexually "molested." Some are tortured. Some are murdered' ,. * *
We read of legislatures in various states debating the creation of new and more severe laws for the punishment of such crimes. We read of serious gatherings of men for the purpose of debating what should be done with the criminals. We read of suggestions being made that instead of punishing the criminals, that they be given "treatment" of various sorts to cure them of their will to commit such enormities. And when I read such things I see red. I fail to understand how any decent man can suggest temporizing in any fashion with those who commit crimes against little children.
**
The laugh of an innocent little child is the holiest sound that ever falls on human ears. The frightened scream of such a child is the most horrid of all sounds. fmagine a little girl, trusting, defenseless, helpless, whose face sparkles with the joy of childhood and whose heart is more than
divinc in its purity, falling into the handg of a mod dog in human form, and bcing dragged away in nameless horror to be "molestcd," ravirhed, torturcd, perhaps murdered. Is there in all the vast category of human debasement any such criminal ae this? Is there any defenee for this hydrophobia beast? For this hideous monster? Ie there any possible punishment but one for this ghoul?
***
How can any real man hesitate for one moment for any reason in deciding the just punishment for such a crime?' Whether the crime end in murder or only in forceful "molestation," the punishment must be the same. There may be some possible defense offered for any other crime in t}e' calendar; but none for this. Suppose, dear reader, that such a horror should come to some angel-faced little girl that you know and love? What would you want done to the man-beast? Would you limit the punishment for this most horrid of all crimes? Would you reduce the punishment because he failed to kill her?
rl*:i
We should promptly and immediately pass a law making emasculation mandatory for the sexual violation of a child. Do it the moment a man's guilt is assured. By so doing protect other children from future crimes. Then provide two and only two further types of punishment. The tsasflife imprisonment. The other--death.
Let's close the sermon for today with a poem, which f found in the editorial columns of the Houston (Texas) Post, and which, I understand, is being reprinted in many directions throughout the South. The title is, "A Nosey Little Brat," and here it is:
"Father, must I go to work?"
"No, my lucky son. We're living now on Easy Street, On dough from Washington. We've left it up to Uncle Sam, So don't get exercised, Nobody has to give a damnWe've all been subsidized."
"But if Sam treats us all so well, And feeds us milk and honey, Please, Daddy, tell me what the hell He's going to use for money?"
"Don't worry, Bub, there's not a hitch, In this here noble planHe simply soaks the filthy rich, And helps the common man."
"But, Father, won't there come a time When we run out of cash, And we have left then not a dime. And things will go to smash?"
"My faith in you is shrinking, Son, You nosey little brat, You do too damn much thinking Son, To be a Democrat."

Under this cost and quality saving method it is necessary to route our outPut in standard sized units with a random length assortment. To produce quality comparable to Palco Redwood lumbet today, under any other ptactice would result in gteatly increased costs with resultant increase in price.

Fireworks
Perhaps the Chinese, shortly after their invention of gunpowder, discovered that firecrackers were excellent for holiday purposes. They amused the populace, and also frightened the devils that always try to spoil auspicious occasions. Perhaps their redundant use in this country began when the clipper ships of New England went into the China trade in a big way.
You will find nothing about firecrackers for holidaymaking in European literature. About fireworks and the ceremonial art of pyrotechnics, yes; that has been going on since the 17th century to celebrate victories, kings' birthdays, etc. But the ornery firecracker, so dear to the heart of the American urchin and village loafer, has never disturbed the peace of Europe. That continent always preferred shooting in earnest.
Prepcre
In time of peace prepare for war, In time of matrimony, Set by some little secret store, Exempt from alimony.
A Good Trick
At a naval training station a doctor was preparing to fingerprint a recruit.
"Wash your hands," said the Doctor.
"Both of them?" asked the recruit.
The Doc hesitated a moment, and said: "No, just one. I want to see how you do it."

Good Bait
It was a hospital for mental cases, and a man sat in the front yard earnestly fishing in a flower bed. A visitor, wish-
ing to be kind, approached him and aeked:
"How many have you caught?"
And the nut replied: "You're the ninth."'
Greqt Memories ol Old
According to factual history Cyrus could call every soldicr in his vast army by name. Themistocles called by name every one of the thirty thousand citizens of Athens. Laurez could recite from memory all the works of St. Augustine. Scaliger is reported to have committed to memory in one month both the Iliad and the Odyssey of Homer.
But Seneca, the great Roman philosopher, was probably the best of all the ancient memory experts. It is written that he could repeat two thousand disconnected words after having heard them once and in precisely the same order in which they were given. Once an author composed a very long poem and read it aloud at a public gathering. Seneca rose and denounced the poet as a plagarist, saying that he, Seneca, was the author of the poem, and to prove it he repeated it word for word. Then he challenged the poet to repeat it, and the fellow could not. To save the man any more mortification Seneca then admitted that it was a joke. He simply listened to the poem read and then recited it, something the author himself could not do.
Advice to Young Men
Never smash thy promise, lad; Never break thy word; Never kiss a lady's lips, Lest thou seem absurd.
Be a rock the girls can trust; Never tell a lie; Never come thou back again When they say goodby.
Never let them wonder, lad, If thou'lt be on time; Pay thy debts with diamonds, Never with a rhyme.
Never be a wastrel, lad; Never fool a maid: Honor make your business, Make of truth a trade.
Do thou as I tell thee, lad; Be the best of men; And girls won't write of thee in verse, Nor think of thee again.

Colgan Requests Approval of Appropriation To Control Forest Pests
Washington, D. C.-In an appearance before the Deficiencies Sub-Committee of the Senate Appropriations Committee, Richard A. Colgan, Jr., executive vice president, National Lumber Manufacturers Association, testified in favor of the proposed supplemental appropriation for "Control of Forest I'ests-Forest Pest Control Act."
In requesting approval of the $4,500,000 appropriation Colgan said, "We of the lumber industry have consistently requested economy in Fedcral expenditures. We believe in that premise. However, the deficiency appropriation under consideration represents funds needed for emergency purposes and thus constitutes an exceptional situation."
Mr. Colgan outlined to the committee the present serious infestations that exist in the extensive federal forest lands located in our Western States. He pointed out the inherent dangers in the spread of spruce budworm, bark and pine beetles to intermingling state and private forests located in Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Wyoming and Colorado. He indicated that private forest owners stand
trrrck. All facilities have bccn strcanrlincd with the idca of giving better and quickcr service to customers.
The morc popular hardu'oocls such as Korina, rift oak, u'alnut, birch, I'hilippinc mahogany, eltn, and gum have been uscd in the decoration <lf thc new offices. In the llriv:rtc ofticc of I)on Braley, m:lnag'er, rvalnut and oak havc becn usecl r.rn opposite walls, and the ceiling has been panelc<l in oak. P,irch in various finishes has been used for paneling in the general office, and red bircl-r is used in thc shipping clcrk's office.
Architccts and retail lumber dealers are invited to bring clients :rn<l customers in to see rvhat can l>e done u,ith hardn'oorl lllvrv<-rod.
reacly to do their share in combatting the pest menace.
In his summation, Colgan declared, "These forest pests are no respecters of property lines, and experience has shown that such insects insufficiently controlled can threaten the .continrred existence of an entire forest industry in a given area."
Hc strongly urged favorable consideration of the appropriation in this case since it represented a minimum amotlnt needed to stop an epidemic infestation before it really began.
Mr. Colgan's testimony and comments u'ere lvell received by Committee members Senator McKellar (D., Tenn.) Chairman, Senator Ellender (D., La.), Senator Cordon (R., Oregon), and Senator Gurney (R., S. D.).

Forest Payments to Counties ' Reach All-Time Hish
San Francisco, Feb. 16-Payment to the State o{ California for distribution to 39 counties of money earned by National Forest land in those counties during Fiscal Year 1949 soared over the million-dollar mark and reached the highest level in the 43 years the U.S. Forest Service l-ras been making these payments, it was announced today by Regional Forester Perry A. Thompson.
The total, $1,132,762, is more than trvice the amount paid the previous year. It represents .25 percent of the receipts the Forest Service collected from timber sales, livestock grazing, recreation permits and other business on the 18 national forests in California in the year ending June 30, 1949. The U. S. Treasury recently mailed checks to State Treasurers.
The "share money" is paid in lieu of taxes on land in national forests. It is apportioned to them according to the National Forest area in each county. Counties use this money for public schoc;ls and public roads.
"An additional benefit is the ten percent of National F'orest receipts rvhich the Treasur)' Department returns to the Forest Service for use in improving forest roads and trails," said Mr. Thompson. "This item for Fiscal Year 1949 will bring back about $4,18.000, for use in California."
He attributed the jump in receipts to increased sales of timber and higher prices paid for it in that period. He added this caution to couuties: "Their share-money froul the current fiscal 1'ear rvill probably bc much less, because our receipts from timber sales have dropped as a result of less demand for timber and lorver prices, particularll'
Flooring Manufacturers' Association reported last week.
He said that approximately 95 per cent of the volume consisted of oak, the type of flooring used most extensively in home building. The rernainder rvas made up chiefly of hard maple, beech, birch and pecan. About 90 per cent of the country's hardr, vood flooring supply comes from the t'vu'o areas, the Southern and Appalachian rcgions, he said.
The five-week total was 21 per cent greater than in the same period of 1948, the year in rvhich a record 795 mlllion board feet rvere shipped. Total shipments last year were more than 785 million board feet, off onlv about I per cent from the all-time high.
Productive capacity of the hardrvood flooring industrv has been expanded considerably since the early postwar days rvher-r the shortage of oak flooring rvas acute. Despite the usuall.r' l-reavy clemand, therefore, manufacturers anticipate no serious difficulties in providing adeqttate supplies, \\rillins said.

Wcrt Dcpendr on Forcrt Watcrrhcd
The importance of national forests in supplying water f<lr fanrr arrd urban use is nruch greater than the area of thcse forcsts rvould indicate, a U. S. Department of Agriculture scicntist statcd today.
Statistics comllile<l by I'ldward N. Munns, chicf of the forcst influerrces clivision of thc l;orcst Scrvicc, rcveal that national forcsts of thc 1l rvcstcrmost statcs occul)y onefifth of thc total larrd area but supply more than one-half of thc total strearrr flow in thcsc ll statcs.
"It is evident," Mr. Munns said, "that city <lrvcllcrs, irrigation farnrcrs, powcr companies an<l other rcsi<lerrts of thc Far Wcst <lcpcncl on thc national forests frlr a vcry Iargc part of thcir water."
Avcragc, lorrgtirnc prccipitation for the statcs of California, Ncva<la, ()rcgon, \\r:rshington, Wyrxnirrg, 1\[orrtarra, Iclaho, Utah, Clolorarlo, Arizona antl Ncu' Mcxico is l7 inchcs a ycar. On n:rtion:rl forests in thesc st:ttcs, avcragc annual llrccillitation is 2(r inches. FIigh, forestc<l arcas rcccivc nrorc rainfall an<l snorvf:rll tharr thc lorvlan<ls, 1\{r. l\'l unns explained.
Thc avcragc annual runoff of rvatcr fronr national forests in thc Wcst, he statcd, is 14 inchcs a year. For the area otrtsidc rrational forcsts, thc :tveragc annual runoff is only 3.3 inchcs.
Mr. N[unns basccl his calculatior.rs ou ligures taken fronr official prccipitation and runoff statistics conrpilcd b1' the Wcather IJurcau and the U. S. Geological Survcy.
On thc avcrAge, the total annu:rl 1>rccipitation for all 11 u'estern states is 1,088 million acrc-feet. Of tltis amount, the national forests recci'r'c 344 million acrc-fcct of prccipitation, I\{r. I\[unns said.
"Fifty-three per cent of precipitation on national fr>rests in the West eventually runs off as stream flow," he said. "Outside the national forests, only 22 per cent of precipitation gets to streams and rivers. Part of the explanation is that forests act like blotters, soaking up rvater and then letting it trickle down gradually in the spring and summer. Also evaporation is less in the high, cool areas than in the lowlands."
Iixpressed in gallons, the total rvater output of national forests in the 11 western states is approximately 6O trillion gallons each year, Mr. Munns stated. This is enough water to supply the city of New York for 137 vears, even at the city's normal consumption of 1,200,000,000 gallons a day.
Since approximately 4 acre-feet of water, counting wastage, is the maximum amount needed annually to irrigate one acre of crops in the West, Mr. Munr.rs estimated that the annual runoff from national forests in the 11 states would irrigate at least 46,000,000 acres of cropland-an area nine times the size of Nfassachusetts or New Jersey.
"With the nation's attention focused on water shortages," Mr. Munns said, "it is imperative for everyone to see the need of safeguarding national forests. Without wellprotected watersheds, the water situation in this country would be critical."
