Not since Swan Alverdson wrote the rvorld's first lumber grading rule at Stockholm, Sweden, back in 1754 has a new grading rule caused as mugh comment as the lVest Coast Rule No. 15 rn'hich becomes effective March 15.
Three years in preparation, the newest lumber grading rules will cover Douglas fir, west coast hemlock, western red cedar and Sitka spruce produced in the rain belt of lvestern Washington, rvestern British Columbia, and northern California.
Not content with rervriting the rules r'vhich govern the production of nearly one-half of the nation's softrvood production, the west coast lumber industry invited four of Oregon's loveliest beauties (above) to publicize the change. Now it is not certain which is publicizing which, but it is a safe bet that the nation's 25,000 retail lumber merchants and many thousands of lumber distributors, as well as some millions more carpenters, homeowners and other lumber users, r,vill know something vital and important has happened out in the tall timber country of the far rvest.
The new rules will conform to modern, streamlined merchandising methods, will eliminate much of the misunderstood verbiage of past rules, and have been written so the lumber purchaser can understand what he is buying.
Basicallv all lumber is graded for its suitability for the use intended. There are two major divisions of grading; for appearance (clears, uppers and pattern grades) and for strength (cor..truction lumber, joists, timbers, dimension).
Major changes in the nerv rules, aside from the greatly simplified reduction of data to understandable terms, are the changes of former number designations of comrnon grades to NAMES. In the nerv rules, No. 1 comrlon be-

Each of these grades has specifrc values and uses throughout our construction industry and in everyday use. However, many people in the past couldn't visualize No. 3, for instance, as having fine construction uses.
Lumbermen finally awakened to the fagt they were putting a curse on some of their good lumber by poorly conceived grading designations.
Select Merchantable remains as the top grade in boards and Select Structural is the top dimension grade. The lettering system for finish, flooring, casing and other clear items is unchanged, excepting top grade of flat grain clears becomes C&Btr.
The fibre stress value of present 1450 grade has been increased to 1500f and 1100f has been increased to 1200f. The thickness of boards and finish items has been reduced from 25/32 to fi inch, because half of these items sold today are

When the Ruskies in the United Nations tried to get Outer Mongolia into that strange assortment of nations, several writers suggested that they also admit Texas, as being just as wise and fair a move. ***
Right away I rvanted to vote for that. In my mind's eye I could see Texas represented on the floor of the UN by someone like Jim Bowie of early Texas fame.
Still in fancy I "o.rta ".1 J. ; those foul-mouthed Ruskies rise to his feet, as has been done so often on that foor, and start shouting insults at the United States of America. Need I tell you, dear friends, what would happen in that case? And wouldn't I like to be there to see it?
This country and ia" g.l.;*]rr. rru" been openly, deliberately, and shockingly insulted in the UN more times than in all of its other history combined. And we sat there and took it. Why? ***
Sir Walter Scott had Roderic Dhu say in his "Lady of the Lake": "I right such wrong where'er 'tis given, even tho it be in the court of heaven." I would have a lot more respect for the United Nations if some sound American had

drug one of those Rusky insulters to the nearest door and kicked him down the steepest stairway.
It is the duty of every loyal American to protest till the heavens fall at everything our government does that seems to him to be wrong. The grea,t Henry David Thoreau protested the Federal government's tolerance of slavery by refusing to pay his poll tax. They put him in jail.
His friend and fellow philosopher, Emerson, came to the jail and exclaimed in surprise: "What are you doing in here?" And Thoreau, also acting surprised, replied: "And what are you doing out th*ere?" *
General George Washington issued the order that caused Thomas Paine's "American Crisis" to be read aloud to his army, in which Paine said: "Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict, the more *glorious the triumph."
Recently we celebrated Boy Scout Week, with the Scout theme, "Onward for God and Country." It was 48 years ago that the Boy Scouts were organizedby Lord Baden-Powell, in England, and it has spread over 53 nations since that time, building boys and future men. It is one of the great organizations of modern history, without a flaw in its purpose or its operation. We are a much better nation because of the Boy Scouts. Encourage them.
Recently our young Assistant Secretary of State, Herbert Hoover, Jr., made a most important speech that missed the headlines it deserved. He went to West Germany and there he made a speech in which he compared and contrasted East Germany, as it exists today under Soviet rule, and West Germany, a free nation under Western guardianship. He compared the hopeless, helpless people of the Eastern sphere, slaves of a sordid master, with the free and hopeful people of the West. No better defense of the free way of life, as opposed to the Soviet darkness, could be found than compaging those two divisions of former Germany. The people of the 'West are better dressed, better fed, better housed, better in every way, enjoying not only the comforts of freedom, but its privileges as well. It was a worthy speech, marvelously illustrated by the subjects hediscussed.
What an interesting spectacle we have been seeing in this country lately in the published and much discussed controversy between Harry Truman and General Douglas MacArthur. Was ever such a contrast? I have regretted exceedingly that this government has not used that mighty, Magnificent MacArthur during recent years. I wanted to see him play the important role for which he is fitted in our national life. If he did nothing else he could greatly improve our general use of the English language, and our recollections of pertinent history. A scholarly orator and writer such as MacArthur would materially raise the level of our talking and thinking. A man thinks with his head. A woman thinks with her heart.
Here is a story that illustrates those di,fferent viewpoints: A young couple stood on opposite sides of the cradle in which lay their first-born baby son. They gazed long and earnestly at this pink and cooing wonder that had come into their lives. The mother spoke:
"John, do you know what I was thinking, looking down at our boy? I saw him in a beautiful young boyhood; then

And John sard: "I was wondering how in the heck they could sell a swell cradle like that for just six dollars and eighty-five cents."
Fire Rqzes Two L. A. Yqrds
A $350,000 fire almost totally destroyed the Slattery Hardwood Company yard at 11615 Parmelee, Los Angeles, during the night of March l, raging 90 minutes through the block-long, three-acre yard before seven county and four city fire-fighting units controlled it. Firemen said the blaze apparently started in the yard's southeast corner near a planing mill leased to Western Mill & Moulding Co., operated by M. O. Parrick (CLM, 2/L5/56).

McCoy Lumbcr Company, operating retail yards in Hemet, San Jacinto and Idylhvild, California.
In building a firm advertising program, rvhich includes the company store in San Jacinto as rvell as Hemet, McCoy cmployed the Harper Mitchell Advertising Agency of Los Angeles to prepare weekly copy for the "island space" contracted for by the company. Now the townspeople, as well

as the farmer, have learned that \,IcCoy specials can be found on the same page each rveek :rncl, As ovcr 80f6 of the McCoy Lumber Companv sales are dcveloped at the rural level, this is most important to the \,IcCoy operatior-r. I)r"rring 1956 the advertising budget u'ill be increased to take czrre of direct mail to farmers nheir vuriorrs specials are offered by the lumber yards.
It 'w'as just 18 years ago that Rrrss NIcCoy- ancl A. I{. ,'\rrvedson purchased tl.re three yards front H. H. Spalding, prominent Ifemet-San Jacinto Valley lumberman, who decided he rvanted to retire from active business. Arwedson was elected president of the then nerv concern and Russell H. McCoy became its general manager. Russ has bcen active in the lumber industry for the past quarter of a century and has gained his experience at both mill and retail level.
NRLDA Award as'Outstanding Rural Store'
Last year at the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association convention held in Cleveland, Ohio, the Hemet yard received a national award for being an Outstanding Rural Store in its class.
Attractive displays of hardware, paint, floor covering, appliances and hundreds of building supply items are mair-rtained in each of the company yards. Pleasant salesmen and yard employes anticipate the needs of clients ar-rd a friendly warm greeting alvaits the shopper.
lO0/o fr,nancing can be arranged, if desired, for everything the firm offers for sale, whether it be one item or material for a complete barn or house. A complete line of General E,lectric appliances is maintained both at the San Jacinto and Hemet stores.
The Idyllwild inventory is not as complete, as this location in the mountains largely has the patronage of the weekend visitor and cabin do-it-yourselfer. The line at the Idyllwild store includes glassrvare "and things the folks forget to bring from home," said McCoy. It is operated on the general rural store idea and serves the ranchers and lveekenders alike. This store can immediately draw on the Hemet location for any items not carried in stock when there is a demand.
The San Jacinto and Hemet stores are gradually being converted to self-service. It has been found that most of the farmer trade likes to pick and browse before making the actual purchase. Every sales help is offered, but not pushed, and the customer percolates 'round the establishment until the articles are selected and a pleasant. friendlv clerk completes the transaction.
Calls 'Market Analizer' Great Aid
"We find the Market Analizer, published by the Lumber Service Co. at Burbank, is a great aid to our sales force ir-r all locations. This complete library of materials, prices and mark-ups is in use in all of our stores," said Russ X{cCoy. "It is a guide to nerv items being offered and helps our staff to quickly serve and give the information requested by the customer. It keeps our selling personnel informed on articles rve don't stock but can obtain on request. The Market Analizer is one of the greatest selling assets lve har.e ever had," he declared.
Cliff Rose, veteran member of the McCoy Lumber Company organization, is r.nanager of the San Jacinto location. Mike Dunn, alert yorlng business executive, is head man

He Knew the Secret of Friendship
An old friend of mine, a very successful salesman, used to say that the difference between a salesman and an engineer is, an engineer is ninety percent bull and ten percent slide rule, and a salesman knows nothing a,t all about a slide rule.
Be that as it may, and it was stated for a gag, of course, there is much to be said for selling as a science. And one of the most scientific things an ambitious salesman can develop in himself is his letter writing.
Just the other day I was reading about the personal characteristics of one of the world's great, and v,ras caught and held by this stateme,nt:
..HE KNEW THE SECRET OF FRIENDSHIP.''
It was Elbert Hubbard, that great philosopher of selling, who wrote those words about Eugene Field, one of the greatest letter writers of American history, and this is what Hubbard said also:
"He hqd a great heart. He was a friend. He lived every day so that he loved and was loved in return. And his greatest works of friendship were the letters he wrote his friends. This man's greatest claim to friend-making was based on the letters he frequently wrote. So, let us consider a description of those letters; for in letter writing, most men are woefully weak.
"His letters breathed kindness, appreciation, truth, understanding. A man lvho received one of those letters would no more part with it than he would with a portrait of his mother. Each letter bore an element of joy; a message of
wisdom; a jigger of wit to give the wisdom flavor. Every letter was short. When he was through, the letter ended. No postscripts. FIe never preached. His letters never "called you down"-they called you up. Up into the sunlight of friendly interest. His letters were all short messages of geniality and friendship. He never uttered a gloomy thought. Only happy thoughts should be perpetuated on paper. His letters made you pleased with yourself, with the world. He came right to the point; never hid a grain of kindness under a bushel of wordy chaff. A lot of loose words turn the milk of human kind, ness to clabber."
Thus vrrote Elbert Hubbard concerning the letter-writing of Eugene Field. True, we cannot all of us write such letters as Field wrote, but at least we can try for some of the points made in the above; try for better, happier, and more frequent letters to our friends. No limit to what that sort of thing could do for salesmen; and, after all, arqn't we all salesmen of something?

Growth of the Grades.
The first primitive effort at segregation of West Coast lumber into specific groups of grades was made at the Simpson sawmill, Gardiner, Oregon, in 1850. The grades were termed "flooring," "selects" and "refuse." The latter grade term was applied to dunnage lumber for the cargo ships in Pacific trade of that era.
In the period of 1849-1852 the great gold-rush boom brought up a variety of uncontrolled construction at San Francisco, and many fires. Five of the fires became major conflagrations. The last, in 1852, reduced 25 blocks of the nerv business district to ashes and burned docks by the mile.
Soon lumber was selling at $500 per thousand board feet. Sailing ships swarmed north from the Golden Gate for the Columbia River and Puget Sound.
Muley Sawing. .
By the end of 1853 the population along the Lower Columbia and Willamette rivers had increased threefold over the 1849 number. Portland was booming. There were 14 sawmills at rvork on the shores of Puget Sound, from Bellingham to Tumwater. Four were steam plants. One o{ these was the Yesler operation around rvhich Seattle grew.
Most of the lumber that vn'as dumped from the clippers, schooners and barks for the rebuilding of San Francisco in 1853-55 was a conglomeration of random lengths ar-rd rvidths, shapes and grades, all cut from primitive muley or sash saws, mainly porn'ered by'ivatern, heels.
Tapering boards and scantlings, planks rvith u'aves that would put the thickness at three inches in the middle and a half-inch at each end, with many ripples between bulges and tapers, left carpenters fit to be tied. The demand for lumber standards of manufacture that rose from the rebuilding of San Francisco was prolonged.
Mississippi \ralley and Wisconsin lumbermen r,vrote a set of grading rules in 1891, and three years later they were revised and adopted by manufacturers in the white and Norr, vay pines of the Lake States region.
The first lumber grade rules publication of the Puget Sound region was an eight-page booklet sponsored by the Seattle Lumber Manufacturers Exchange in 1902. The

Southern Coliforniq Door lnstitute Foces lts Problems
Southern California door manufacturers and distributors are moving into the heavy house-building season with one eye on the weather and the other on a rather sorry last-quarter profit picture. Local distributors, particularly, are wondering if the "worst is over" and if some semblance of business stability can be expected in the near future, declares John Eells (left), vice-president in charge, Davidson Plywood and Lumber Co., Los Angeles, and former officer of the Southern California Door Institute.
The past 60 to 90 days have seen a downward spiral in prices that appeared to represent a more serious decline than the recent labor dispute and subsequent rainy season would justify. In the face of a market demand that indicates a full-scale utilization of doors beyond the capacity of local manufacturers to provide, sorne distributors have taken another look at their "hole card" with the idea that perhaps the sales effort is not worth it, Eells believes.
This condition presents a business phenomenon inasmuch as other fields within the building industry ap-

It will not only be an excellent year for all of u"s, but I feel sure we in the industry shall work together to measure up to the standards of the Institute and help the growth of this great state of ours. We fellorv members of the Southern California Door Institute will have an excellent opportunity to cooperate and join hands for the good of the fraternity and of ourselves," declares President Fidler.
pear to be enjoying good volume and reasonable profits. ft is not unlikely that if profits during the next quarter do not improve some distributors will withdraw from this intensely competitive ma,rket, he said.
Local information indicates that capacity to produce doors locally is growing. These doors are of the hollou-core type utilizing imported plywood for door faces. There is no indication that the market cannot absorb some increased production. lfowever, there are unmistakable indications that house-building production is gaining on demand, said Mr. Eells.
An entirely difierent picture exists in the institutional field. Here the demand for doors, of architectural specifications is

strong and is supporting reasonably fair profits to the rnanufacturer and distributor alike. \\rith the far-reaching plans for school work, public building and industry expansion, the future looks substantial and secrlre. Distributors of this type door have enjoyed a steady and consistent volume of business that shows no appearance of abating for some time.
The preference for the flush type door continues to gain at the expense of the stile and rail door in all types of building. This u,ill continue unless the quality of the low-priced flush rloor falls below an acceptable standard as a result of price pressure. Architectural specifications will protect the quality of the institutional type rloor.
As alu'ays since the beginning of our industry, responsibility and dependability in the product r.nnst prevail in the end, Nfr. Ilells concludes.
Builders Hcil New Stqndqrd For Hollow-Gore FlushDoors
The recently announced new commercial standard for hardwood veneered hollow-core flush cloors is being hailed by industry leaders as "a prime aid to lumber distributors and dealers, builders, architects and home buyers," according to Ormie C. l-ance, manager of the National Wooclwork Manufacturers Association. The standard, CS 200-55, promulgated recently by the U. S. Department of Comrnerce, sets basic requirements for hollow-core cloors, relating them to the NWMA grade labeling system. It also covers inspection, methods of test, nomenclature and definitions. It supersedes and updates those portions of CS l7l-50 which clealt with such doors.

Japcnese Plywood Business Growfh Due to Door lndustry Demqnd
Postwar activity in Japanese plywood began about the end of 1950. From a modest beginning tl.re business has grown to a tremendous volume, and Japanese plyr,r'oocl is an extremely important part of the hardrvood plywoo<l picture in the Unitecl States. The Japanese material is well lnanufactured, attractive looking and modestly priced. This corrbination has resulted in an ever-increasing clemand for the nraterial.
Japanese plywood is composed of the several species of beautiful Japanese hardwoods such as Ash, Oak. Birch ancl Shina (Basswood). The largest factor, holvever, is the huge footage of Philippine N,Iahogany (Lauan) plywoocl, which is made from logs imported into Japan from tlie Philippines.
'By far the largest volume has been in door skins for the flush door industry all through the country, and the fantastic growth of the Japanese plywood business is due largely to the door industry's demand for the product. Stock panels in all thicknesses are also a,n important part of the business.
For several years all the importers went their- inclividual n':rys with no central group or association. At the time there was no need, but in 1954 it became urgently necessary to form an association.
The Imported Hardwood Plywood Association of America, composed of the major importers of Japanese plywood into the United States, was formed for the purpose of offering combined and organized resistance to the charges of the domestic hardwood plywood proclucers that irnported pl1'n'ood was

Fidlers' Xlanufacturing Co., Inc., Inglewood, California, completed its plant remodeling last month, according to Harry A. Perry, president of the cloor concern. Over $50,000 was spent on new machinery and a complete conveyor system for the 100,000-square-foot plant, which is presently turning out all types of flush doors in addition to plastic tops for school desks.
The r.nodernization work took over six months to complete but the addition of the laminated division, where stock for solid core doors is produced, increased the production at the Inglewood plant over 2A/o, said l,ouis Fidler, secretary of the firm.
Fidler's is presently stocking over 30,000 door units for the

tracle in the working inventory warehouse, where immediate delivery of any type or size door may be obtained. It requires the services of 60 skilled employes at the modern plant, where the present schedule calls for 15,000 doors per week. Films of the plant under production are available for showing to service, fraternal and social clubs, Mr. Fidler declared, and may be obtained for the asking.

Stimulated by its success in this primary purpose. the Imported Hardrvood Plyu'ood Association is now rvorking out a program to further promote the demand for Japanese Plywood along the lines of other plyr'vood associations in America. Big Housing Boom Forecqst for l95Os
Redding, Calif.-A housing construction boon.r dwarfing the one of the past 10 years is due to start in the early 1960's, W. E. Griffee, Portland, assistant secretary-manager of the Western Pine Association, told the annual Sierra-Cascade Logging Conference here Feb. 16.
"When the wartime babies now crot'ding our schools begin to nlarry, our country ahnost certainly will have to build 2,000,000 houses a year," Griffee declared. By way of comparison, he explained that post-war home building hit a peak of 1,395,000 starts in 1950 and reached about 1,330,000 units in 1955.
Griffee said residential construction "really calls the tune for the lumber industry," a6rd on that basis lumber business prospects for the 1960's are excellent.
The 12-state Western Pine region, now producing one-fourth
of the nation's softwood lumber, is in a position to rneet increased future demands, Griffee indicated, because timber supplies are ample.
California is already the nurnber two tin.rber volume st;rte irr the nation, and Griffee pointed out tl-rat the new Tirnber Resources Review announced last Fall by the U. S. Forest Service showed the state had half again as rnuch tirnber as lrad been counted in the last appraisal in 1945.
He said the new estimates show "36/o rnore pine, 70/o more Douglas fir, 106/o rnore white fir, and an overall 56/o n.rore timber of all kinds" than in the official estimate of a decade earlier.
Much of California's timber backlog is or,ermature, and the forester-lurrberman indicated a need for action on the part of government agencies now and in the future to "open up their overmature stands faster and to permit as large a cut as the backlog of stumpage and the growing capacitv of the lands u'ill i usti fr'."

357th Tff Wos 'Just Perfect'
The 357th Terrible Twenty tournament was held at San Gabriel Country Club, February 17. George Gartz ran the af fair; he ran it perfectly. This remark is just courtesy to George-he wasn't responsible for the perfect weather, the beautifully kept course, the good caddies, the friendly spirit of the employes, the comfortable club house, and the deliciously flavored tender steaks. Carsten Woll and Dr. Sorey tied for low net, 76-8-68 and 84-16-68, and will play it of f this month. Osgood and Bowen won their matches in the upper bracket, and Berger and Sorey in the lower bracket, and will play the finals of the second six months match play tournament this month.
Doug Disney's cut toe prevents him from playing golf and
he has requested a year's suspended membership. This was approved by the members. Torn Fleming was appointed to thr: board of directors to replace him, with the thought that l-re could do some work for the club in payment of all the silverware he has won in the past year or so.
Our next tournament is at Annandale, Tuesday, March 20, with Tom Fleming doing the work. He has threatened to wear his. pink pants, so bring your dark glasses.-H. M. Alling.

"Garden Redwood from California" is the theme of a new promotional campaign of the California Redwood Association, which gets under way this month with the distribution of an attractive mailing piece to dealers of redwood throughout the country. This brochure, detailing the story of the growing trend to "Outdoor Living"-which had its inception in California-offers window streamers, display cards, envelope stuffers, newspaper ad mats, informative data sheets, and a new l6-page boolilet, "Garden Ideas from California," with many illustrations in full color as a means of selling the grades for the jobs it can do best. Garden Redrvood is not a new grade, but a further definition of the CRA grades which are best suited to use in garden structures. California dealers have now learned that this is a prime market for the "Construction" ancl "Shop" grades.

We Bet on the Fishing
Old Zeph Dorgan sat on a log near the bridge one Sunday morning, casting anxious glances at an uncertain sky. His willow fish-pole and can of bait lay a't his feet. Before he had quite decided on the weather, the minister came by, having taken a short cut owing to the fear of a sudden shower.
"Well, brother Zeph," he said, "Is yo gwine to chu'ch or is yo' gwine fishin'?"
"Ah dunno yit," replied Zeph, "Ah'm jest a-wrastlin'wif ma conscience."
A lllemory System
Forget each kind, ness that you do, As soon as you have done it; Forget the praise that falls on you, The moment you have won it; Forget the slander that you hear, Before you can repeat it; Forget each slight, each spite, each sneer, Wherever you may meet it.
Remember every kindness done To you, whate'er its measure;
Remember praise by others won, And pass it on with pleasure;
Remember every promise made, And keep it to the letter;
Remember those who lend you aid, And be a grateful debtor.
Youthful Ambish
"Jimmie," said the teacher, "What is your greatest ambition ?"
Jimmie considered thoughtfully.
"I think," he said, "it is to wash mother's ears."
The Truly Poor Mqn
A Man is poor when he gets out of tune with his environments, when his friends have lost confidence in him, when he has but dark pictures qn the walls of his inner life, when his character is diseased and dishonest tricks of evasion dominate his heart and soul. He is indeed poor when he puts something over on his friends at the expense of his character, when the Golden Rule ceases to direct his thoughts and his everyday actions. When a man's character is spotted by dirty tricks of his own conceivingi, he is facing the most abject poverty. A man is not necessarily poor because he has little of this world's possessions. If he maintains his integrity, keeps his character unblemished and square to the world, he is not poor, even though hunger is staring him in the face and he has no place to lay his head.
-Frank McDonnell.
A Turtle
I'd like to be a turtle. A lazy, lousy turtle, With nothing in the world to do But lay around the whole day through, To sit upon a mossy 1og, And gossip idly with a frog, To dwell amid the rushes cool, Or swim a little in a pool, To know no martter what befell, I simply crawl into my shell And let the whole world go to hellI'd love to be a turtle.
Sqlesmonship Plus
"Did you ever have any real exciting experience?" I asked a traveling salesman.
"About twenty years ago," he replied, "I was ordered out of Wyoming by a notorious two-gun badman who didn't like the suit of clothes I wore."
"Well, I suppose you lost no time in getting away?"
"No, sir. I bought him a couple of drinks and then sold him the suit."
The Difference When Ma Is Sick
When Ma is sick, she pegs away; She's quiet, though, not much to say; She goes right on a-doin' things, And sometimes laughs, or even sings. She says she do,n't feel extra well, But then it's just a kind o' sPell. She'll be alright tomorrow, sure, A good sleep will be the cure.
An' Pa he sniffs an' makes no kick, For women folks is always sick.
An' Mag she smiles, lets on she's gladWhen Ma is sick it,,hin't so bad.
When Pa Is Sick
When Par is sick he's scared to death, An' Ma an' us just holds our breath; He crawls in bed, and puffs and grunts, And does all kinds of crazy stu, nts, FIe wants "Doc" Brown, an'mighty quick, For when Pa's ill he's awful sick.
He gasps an' groans, an' sort o' sighs, He talks so queer, ar{ rolls his eyes, Ma jumps an' runs, an' all of us, An' all the house is in a fuss.
An' peace an' joy is mighty skeerceWhen Pa is sick it's something fierce. _Exchange

In addition to working with Fred and Ralph Lamon, Earl will once again have the opportunity of teaming up with Gordon Saunders of the I-amon sales staff, who at one time was associated with Bender in the wholesale lumber business.
Bender's lumber experience includes both extensive sawmill and sales know-how. He at one time worked for several Northern California and Oregon sawmills and, after World War II, he operated his own wholesale lumber business for five years. For the past two years Bender had been in charge of Northern California sales for Pacific Western Lumber Company in Palo Alto.

Noyo Soil Booster Mqkes Bow in 'Sunsef'
The Noyo Chemical & Fibre division of Union Lumber Company introduces its new product, Noyo Soil Booster, in a large color ad in the April issue of Sunset Magazine, reaching a half million California garden fans. With Noyo Soil Booster already available in a number of lumberyards, the Sunset series of ads and merchandising push is expected to greatly broaden distribution as well as substantially increase demand.
A product of redwood research at Union Lumber's Chemical and Fibre plant at Fort Bragg, Noyo Soil Booster is a conditioner rather than a fertilizer, according to Sherman A. Bishop, vice-president in charge of sales. The bark is washed, factionated and chemically processed to give the properties desirable for effective and lasting soil conditioning.
Applied lightly around root systems or mixed with the top soil, Noyo Soil Booster improves friability, moisture retention, soil aeration and reduces water bills. Unlike peat moss, which requires frequent replacement, Noyo Soil Booster, in addition to providing immediate workability, is gradually converted toi long life humus. The exclusive Noyo chemical process pene-j trates each particle which assures nutritional values for yearsr to come. Bishop points out that pound for pound, the productt in one of the most economical soil conditioners available.

the new TelAutograph inter-communications system. By way of contrast, Don White points out that the time involved on telephone calls now has already been reduced to about one hour a day.
Previously, when telephones were used, personnel calling individuals at the other office frequently had to rvait on the line or call back, since the person at the other end was busy. This delay has been eliminated. The person at the other end is no longer interrupted, for the telescriber automatically receives the written message for him, whether he is busy or away from his desk.

The lumber company also reports that bv decreasing inter-office communication time, 'rvith the use oI the TelAutograph Telescriber System, more time is devoted to handling customer telephone calls. With the same number of persons handling telephones, White Ilrothers can now give its customers more efficient and virtually instantaneous service.
Being "first" u,ith an ir-rnovation or a new idea is nothing novel for White Brothers. E,stablished in San F'rancisco in 1872, the firm rvas among' the first to install telephones in the early days. Side-looding Moore Kilns Solve Restricred Ground-cr€d Problem qt Penberrhy lumber Compony
'I-he I'enberthv l-umber Cornpar.ry in I-os -\ngeles has just completed the installation of trvo Moore Cross-Circuiation design, side-loading, steam-heated kilns. Limited ground area and need of tu'o units for flexibility s'ere the tn'o factors that led to the selection of the side-loadinq kilns.
The tu'o kilns back np to the proirerty line and the control room of both units is houserl <lirectly above the compact fire-proof boiler roont, l'hich is on ground level. The single overhead control rclom contains the instruments, ieed connections, dr:rin connections, air compressor and stairrvav to tl're roof for both kilns and the motor for driving the longitudinal fan svstem for one kiln. The notor and drir.e for the second kiln is on a prefabricated steel bracket on the opposite end of the kilns from the boiler room.
Large diameter fans and a single motor drive keep maintenance costs to a minimum and yet provide air velocities through the lumber in excess o{ 40CX per minttte.
The kilns are of the most modern design and include autonratic fan reversal ,2 steel fin pipe, complete automatic control of heat, steam spray and roof ventilators and rvell-
baffled lumber load through the use of ttretal ceiling ancl end baffles.
Steam at 10-15 PSI is supplied by a Scotch-Nfarine automatic package boiler. Natural gas is the primary fuel but oil standby service has been provided. The boiler installation s'as under the supervision of Tamco Engineers of Sar-r Francisco and Thermal Engineering & E,quipment Company of Los Angeles.
The Penberthy Lumber Company has speciaiized in qr.rality hardrvoods and softrvoods and the recent kiln installation 1>rovides facilities for seasoning lumber for exacting recluirements. A railroad spur and fleet of trucks and other modern lumber handling ecluipment allow prompt processing and shipment of lumber to Penberthy customers.
A visitor to the Penberthy plant is immediatell' surprisecl rvith a large sign mounted 60 feet in the air orr packages of stickerecl lumber, as u'ell as the neatness and cleanliness of the entire operation rvhich speaks of a "rvell-org:rnizcd anrl efificient honsehold."

Bob Reid of. Ziel & Co., fnc., pioneer San Francisco lumber importing firm, announces that L. Dale Watson of Watson Sales Co., Los Angeles, has been appointed Southern California and Arizona sales representative for the century-old concern. For the past seven years, Watson has been engaged in the sale of lumber and allied products in Los Angeles.
