National Plyrrood Digtributorg Agrociation Holdg Winter Meeting in San Francigco The winter meeting of the National Plywood Distributors Association was held at the St. Francis Hotel, San Francisco, March 14. There was an attendance of 4O, representative of theAssociation's western territory.

The main subject for discussion was the "Defense Program and Your Business." On the agenda were related topics such as "Material Controls," "Price Controls," "Selling in the Defense Economy," "Your Part in Civilian Defense," and t'Wage Controls."

All of those present took part in the discussion. There were morning and afternoon sessions, and a luncheon. The meeting was a fine opportunity for the members to further their acquaintance with each other.

Stcrt Construstion ol Model Home For los Angele Hone Show

Construction started recently when grodnd was broken for "The Southlander" at Pan Pacifc Auditorium. Featuring many innovations and new ideas, "The Southlander" rvill be on display dtrring the 6th National Los Angeles Home Show, June l4th through 24th. Work began officially when Home Show President I'larl T. Heitschmidt rvielded the 6rst shovel of dirt.

Ilulldozers and crews of the Sentinel Construction Company took over from there in order to get the house ready by show time. Sentinel officials Tom Glover and Jim Young, real estate developers, said that tlte "Southlander" will be in the $25,000 class and will exemplify comfortable and gracious California living. Among the many features will be all-glass liv.ing and play rooms, each room having its own patio. Glover and Young declared, "There is increasing public demand for horrres of this type."

Heitschmidt revealed that the therne of the 1951 Los Angeles Home Show will be the "I)ageant of Miracles."

An attendance record was established last year when approximately 200,000 persons visited the ten-day Exposition, which is sponsored by the Construction Industries of Southern Clalifornia. "Our 1951 Shorv will be bigger and better than any previous one," Heitschriridt added.

Concat To Be Held at Fresno April 13 San Joaquin Hoo-Hoo Club No. 31 will hold a Concatenation on Friday, April 13, at the Belmont fnn, Fresno.

There will be a fine steak dinner. Belmont Inn has a large dining area, and a private room for the degree team. Dinner will be at 6:39 p.m.

Bob Reid, who did su,ch a good job at the last Concat will again lead the degree team, Attendance Chairman Willard LaFranchi reports that the

El Rancho meeting on March 9 was a complete success.

He says that Di'ck Kennedy and his assistants did such good work that the 64 who attended enjoyed the meeting thoroughly. Attendances have been running about 60 on the average, which is considered very good indeed.

C. D. Johnson Lumber Corporation Makes Huge Lumber Shipment to L. A. Harbor Laden with 4,000,000 board feet of lumber from the C. D. Johnson Lumber Corporation of Portland and Toledo, the

SS Betsy Olson arrived in the harbor of Los Angeles on February 20. According to the statistics available this appears to be the largest shipment ever loaded by ong mill on a single vessel bound into the harbor of Los Angeles.

The stock was sold by Stephen G. Freeman & Co. of Balboa, Calif., representing C. D. Johnson. The Shipment was delivered to five or six consignees.

A truly prodigious operation, and far from a newcomer in setting production statistics, is that of the C. D. Johnson mill at Toledo. In 1950 the mill shipped 171,000,000 board feet rail and cargo. Of this quantity 103,000,000 was shipped by water on 53 different vessels. This production figure was surpassed only in l94l when 190,000,000 feet were shipped. Perhaps not generally known is the fact that the mill's production and shipment is the largest of any single mill in the state of Oregon.

Johnson's shipments into Southern California have come down in a more or less steady flow. Directly before the present cargo 1,500,000 feet were delivered by water into Los Angeles and San Diego. Closely following the Betsy Olson a further vessel discharged 2,000,000 feet at the two cities. The schedule has been regular as a result of the integrated efforts of the mill in allocating and readying the sizable shipments, the selling program in southern California coordinated to that schedule, and service from the steamship company in the proper time arrivals.

President E. G. Reel presided at the business session following dinner. Hal Von Breton was master of ceremonies. Roy Stanton Jr. introduced the speaker of the evening, R. J. Barry, consulting engineer, who gave an interesting and informative talk on "fnventory Turnover and Its Effect on Costs."

They flew both ways, visited Mexico City and Acapulco, and also spent a few days at Taxco, and Cuernavaca.

Ukiah, Calif.-Directors of Masonite Corporation made their first offrcial inspection of the new multi-million dollar hardboard plant here recently. The delegation was headed

by Eugene Holland of Chicago, president.

The visitors were escorted on their trip through the plant and into the corporation's forest tracts over the 35mile Masonite road by E. T. F. Wohlenberg, vice president and general plant manager.

Two days were spent here by the directors, who witnessed the various operations by which fir and redwood logs are transformed into panels of pressed wood, visited each of the 10 buildings constituting the plant, and toured the private road which makes the raw material accessible' The sprawling plant is located one and a half miles north of the city on a 116-acre site.

With their host and other plant executives, the group followed the Masonite road over the 2,355-foot crest of the Coast Range to its terminus in the heart of the corpo-

Cassidy was elected chairman of the board and chief executive officer of JohnsManville Corporation and Adrain R, Fisher was appointed presidcnt of the corporation at a special meeting of the board of <lirectors held today.

Mr. Cassidy succecds to the post left vacant by the death on Irebruary 26, 1951, of Lewis H. Brown who had been chief cxccutivc officer of Johns-Manville Corporation since 1929, first as prcsident and, from 1946, as chairman

of the board. Mr. Fisher succeeds Mr. Cassidy, who became president of Johrrs-Manville Corporation on the retirement of It. W. I-ea on January 31, 1951.

Mr. Fisher joined Johns-Manville in 1923 as superintendent of the asphalt roofing department at the company's Waukegan, Illinois. plant. Prior to that time he had been superintendent with the Barber Asphalt Company of Perth Amboy, New Jersey, and a manager with the Stowell Manufacturing Company, Jersey City, New Jersey. In Johns-Manville he has held executive positions at the company's Lompoc, California, and Manville, N. J. plants. In 1937, Mr. Fisher was made production manager of JohnsManville with offices in New York City, and in 1945 became a vice president of the Corporation. He was named vice president for production in 1946 and in January 31, 1951, he was elected a director and appointed vice president in charge of all asbestos mining.

Returns From Mexico Trip Jim Needham, vice president and general manager of Van Arsdale-Harris Lumber Co., San Francisco, returned recently from a business trip to Mexico, where he visited Mexico City, and various lumber centers, negotiating for the purchase of additional pine. This company has been making sizable shipments of Mexican pine into San Francisco.

Fire Destroys Cross Lumber Co. Plant in Merced

The big retail lumber yard of Cross Lurnber Co., cabinet shop, planing mill and offi'ce building were destroyed by fire March 19, with an estimated loss of between $350'000 and $@,000. The fire started with an explosion and spread rapidly. The principal efforts of the firefighters were concentrated on saving adjoining buildtngs.

Al Frort'Sclb Intcrat In Sen Dicgo Lumbd Cornprny The sale of hig intercst in thc San Dicgo Lumber Company was announced in Fcbruary by A. A. (Al) Frost, pioneer San Diego lumberman. Al has retained only the San Diego Lumber Company real estate and buildings.

The owners of the San Diego Lumber Company now are Harry C. McGahey, Olin S. Easterly and'Orville B. Wilson.

This move consolidates all of Al Frost's lumber interests in the Frost Hardwood Lumber Company at Market and State Streets, San Diego, where he and his two sons, Gordon end Albert Jr., are engaged in the wholesaling of hardwood lumber, flooring, plywoods, Ponderosa pine, insulation boards and Formica.

Al Frost came to San Diego in 1895. In the summer of 1911, after completing his junior year at Stanford, he organized the Frost Hardwood Lumber Company at the foot of 9th Street. In the fall, he placed a capable man in charge of the business and returned to Stanford where he graduated with the class ot 1912. Then he returned to San Diego and took over the management of the business which has gro\r'n and prospered under his guidance for the past 40 years.

He finds time to take an active part in hardwood association affairs, is a member of Hoo-Hoo, a past Snark of the San Diego district, and a past member of the Supreme Nine.

Al is a successful businessman and enjoys the friendship and esteem of the entire Southern California lumber in-

When he got out of the service he went with the San Diego Lumber Company where he remained until his father sold his interest in that concern and is now associated 'rvith his father. He is a member of Hoo-Hoo. Al Frost Sr. is happy that his two sons are rvith him in business as they can now take over some of the load for him. They make a fine triumvirate who will continue to make lumber history in Southern California.

At their present location, the Frost Hardwood Lumber Company has over 20,000 square feet of covered storage, a plywood rvarehouse of 3,500 square feet, and a rnillion-anda-half board feet of lumber storage in :r completely paved yard.

Lumber Merchantg Aggociation of Northern California

Will Meet in San Francisco April 18,'19 and 90 Arrangements for the Annual Convention of the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California, to be held at the I'atace Hotel, San Francisco, on Wednesday, Thursday and lriday, April 18, 19, and 20, have been completed and the directors predict a most successful annual meeting.

The exhibits, which will be an important feature of this year's convention will be open at 9:00 a.m. on Wednesday, Registration will be from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon.

President J. H. Kirk, Kirk Lumber & Building Material Co., Santa Maria, will call the convention to order after luncheon.

There will be a Hoo-Hoo Concatenation in the evening, sponsored by San Francisco Hoo-Hoo Club No. 9.

For the ladies' entertainment there will be a special luncheon, and a cruise on San Francisco Bay' There will be a number of top-notch speakers who will discuss subjects of current interest to retail lumber dealers.

Lowell Thomas, Jr. has been signed up fpr Thursday evening to give a Travelogue of his trip to Tibet, illustrated with color motion pictures.

The luncheon on Thursday will be sponsored by the San Francisco Lumbermen's Club' On Friday afternoon there will be a panel discussion.

The panel will consist of lumber dealers, business men, and Government officials. Dealer problems will be discussed,

such as inventory control, capital requirements, budgeting of costs and sales, collection methods, types of insurance, wage and price controls, yard management, emptoyee training, credit granting standards, etc.

The annual banquet will be held on Friday evening' There will be dancing, and a gala floor show.

Personnel Chcnrges Announced The Pacific Lumber Company, San Francisco, announces the following additions to its outside sales staff: Jim Hopkins, who has been in the San Francisco office since before Wortd War II, as credit manager and in the sales department, is now covering the Northern California territory from Stockton north.

Harry G. Hood, who was for many ygars with Dolbeer & Carson Lumber Co., San Francisco, in the sales department, is now with The Pacific Lumber Company, covering the territory from Manteca south to Bakersfield, and San Francisco and the Coast Counties south to Santa Maria.

C. E. Ncedham, president of Van Arsdale-Harris Lumber Co., San Francisco, returned March 20 f.rom spending 10 days in Palm Springs, where he played in the Palm Springs Invitational Golf Tournament, March t6, 17, and 18.

Jrassed away in San Anselmo, Calif., March 16, after an illness of more than a year. He had been with The Pacific I-un'rber Company for 25 years. He formerly covered all of Northern California, but latterly the Crast Counties.

He had a host of friends in the lumber industry of California, and he will be greatly missed.

Born in I-os Angeles 54 years ago, and edttcated at Pacific Heights grammar school, San Francisco, and the University of Santa Clara, and played football for the Broncos. He chose lumber industry for a career. He was known to his many friends as "Smiling Lew."

Mr. Blinn married Maizie Heaney Startzman, interior decorator, and a native San Franciscan, in l9?5. He was the only son of Genevieve Nannary Blinn, star of stage and screen, and the late Irving Lewis Blinn of l-os Angeles; grandson of the pioneer lumberman of Southern California, Lewis Winship Blinn; cousin of the late Holbrook Blinn, famous stage star, and Kenneth William Dailey, nationally ,known San Francisco theatrical agent.

He resided at the family home, "Blinnacre," San Anselmo, and was a member of Santa Clara Alumni, Olympic Club, and American Legion Post No. 179, San Anselmo'

Funeral services were held March 19 in San Rafael. A Mass of Requiem was said at St. Rita's Church, Fairfax.

Eugene I. Curtis Eugene Judson Curtis, 65, president of Curtis Companies fncorporated, Clinton, Iowa, died Wednesday morning, February 28 in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he and Mrs.

Curtis had just arrived for a vacation. They sailed for Hawaii February 22 and Mr. Curtis was in excellent health upon leaving, but was ill when the boat docked at Honolulu. Death was attributed to an abdominal hemorrhage.

Funeral services were conducted in Clinton on March 5 at the First Presbyterian Church.

He was born in Clinton, Iowa, July 26, 1884, the son of George Martin Curtis and Iittie Lewis Curtis. His father was one of the founders of Curtis Con.rpanies Incorporated, originally established in 1866.

Mr. Curtis was director of the National Woodwork Manufacturers Association; chairman of the board and dircctor of McCloud River Railroad Company, McCloud, Calif.; director and secretary of Bald Mountain Mining Company near Lead, S. D., and director of the Employers Mutuals Insurance Company of Wausau, Wis. He was past director of the National Association of Manufacturers, and was one of the original founders of Ponderosa Pine Woodrvork and a director of that organization for 10 years and president for two terms.

At the time of his death he was a member of the millwork advisory committee, forest products division, of the National I'roduction Authority.

Surviving are his wife, two daughters, two sons, two step-daughters, 13 grandchildren and his brother George L. Curtis of Clinton, chairman of the board of directors of Curtis Companies Incorporated.

Willcrrd C. Fuller Willard Cecil Fuller, 59, manager of the H & H Lumber Company, passed away suddenly at his home in Los Angeles on March 10.

A native of Maine, he had been a resident of Los Angeles since 1919. lIe was with H & H Lumber Company at Los Angeles since 1939, and prior to that with the Hammond Lumber Company for over 20 years. He was widely known in lumber circles.

Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Lavinia Fuller; a son' Charles W. Fuller; a brother, Louis N. Fuller, a sister, Mrs. Mildred Carver, and two grandchildren.

Funeral services were held on March 14 at Utter-McKinley's Viewpark Chapel in Los Angeles.
