Last fall I heard a story that I got a great laugh out of. ft was the one about the guy with two fiied eggs on top of his head and a strip of bacon over each ear who came to the psychiatrist and said-"I want to talk to you about my brother."
:1. {. *
No, it wasn't my story, and f have no idea where it came from, but the first time I saw it printed was when f ran it as a Favorite Story in this journal. And how it spread ! Within two weeks it was being flashqd back and forth all over the country on big radio programs. After three months it still goes on. Only a few days ago Red Skelton pulled it on his program, changing the food items a bit. I understand a majority of radio programs have used it.
:8**
I thought of that when f saw the following rhyme in "Southern fndustrial Editor" : We shot a gag into the air, It was reprinted everywhere; In some house organ next we read it, The Wall Street Journal got the credit. But, let them lift it if .they please, We stole it from old Sophocles, Who, in turn, beyond a doubt, Swiped it somewhere, and sent it out. *{.*
I used to get mighty peeved years ago when I'd see Favorite Stories from this journal or from my books of stories showing up in Readers Digest, Wall Street Journal, and other national publications, always over the name of some other person or publication. But I got used to it. Stories,. like a gambler's money, have no home. And so long as they make people laugh, what difference does it really make? The laugh's the thing! {.r8*
The best laugh that has come out of Washington of late I found in one of George Dixon's columns. You recall that last year Truman stumped the countiy denouncing the 80th Congress, and demanding that it be voted out. Dixon says he understands the President is going to stump the country again this year TO GET THE,80TH CONGRESS BA.K'
A story that made the rounds many years ago is again in circulation. A man who was going back to Russia for a visit told his friend that he would write him abotrt condi-
tions there. If he wrote in black ink, what he said was true. If in red ink, it was false. This to get around the censors. A month later the friend got a letter from Russia. It was in black ink. He painted a wonderful picture of the happiness and prosperity of the Russians under Stdin. They had everything men and women could desire, he said. And then he added a postscript: "The only thing you can't find here is red ink." *t*
Speaking of Russia, I heard Martin Dies talk about Communism the other 'rlay. And when he recited the history of Stalin from a petty thief and convict to the most brutal and cold-blooded murderer in all the history of the world, the destroyer of many millions of his own people in cold blood, I couldn't help repeating to myself the words that were so well advertised in this country last year: "Good old Joe ! I like Joe !" :1.**
I read in the Los Angeles papers recently about an old lvoman whose home was foreclosed and taken from her to settle a debt that started out as only eight dollars and ninety cents. In Texas that couldn't happen. It would be absolutely and entirely impossible. It wouldn't make ariy difference whether she owed eight dollars, or eight thousand dollars, or eight million dollars, no,one could take her home away from her for debt. The fundamental laws of Texas won't allow it. They passed that law a hundred years ago for the protection of women in their own homesteads, and it still stands. I think it's one of the wisest state laws ever put on a statute book. It may be truly said that in Texas a woman's home is her fortress from which no claim of debt can dispossess her.
Music and politics seem to go hand in hand in these here days. New York's famous Mayor, Jimmy Walker, burst into the limelight when he wrote and started the nation humming a love song-"Will You Love Me In December As You Do In May." Jimmy Davis got himself elected Governor of Louisiana when he wrote and started to sing-"You Are My Sunshine." A band and a bunch of pleasing singers did much to make Lee O'Daniel Governor and Senator from Texas. His singing is said to have elected Glenn Taylor Senator from Idaho. Jack B. Tenney, gifted pianist and music writer, is running for Mayor of Los Angeles right now. I{e is the author of some pretty tunes, latest of which was "Mexicali Rose." And don't forget, we've got a very capable piano player in the White House'

Let us now speak of taxes. (What a horrible subject.) Leon G. Halden, teacher of government in one of the big universities, figures that income taxes have increased 782 per cent since 1933. And our government is now asking an increase in billions of income taxes, together with muli tiplied new billions of payroll taxes for enlarged sociai security and socialized medicine.
Fred Allen, radio "o-i, ir, lrrrro.rn"ing his retirement from radio, says that he gave 39 radio shows last year; and 3l of them went for taxes. Why work so hard, he says?
As this is being written President Truman says we must still pass a tax law providing over four billions in new income taxes. However, Senator George, of Georgia, Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and the Senate's top tax expert says that the only thing that would be likely to cause a depression in this country this year would be the passage of such a tax bill. A slight difference of opinion. My guess-there ain't going to be no new income taxes this year. Add the proposed new payroll taxes for social purposes to the proposed four billion dollar income tax, and you would see a scramble for the cyclone cellar on the part of employers and*investors.
Every issue of the financial papers and those reporting Washington legislative matters, has something to say about deflation, inflation, recessions, and depressions. After reading the opinions of many Washington experts on the subject of depressions, I have come to the conclusion that most of those boys fail to understand that depressions are about ninety per cent psychological. I have never forgotten the way a smart man illustrated that fact to me one time. He said "If a theatre is filled with people, and someone smells smoke and starts hollering 'fire,' it makes no difference how big o,r small the fire is or if there is a fire or not, the slabs in the morgue are going to be piled high the next morning with the corpses of those who got frightened and rushed for the exits." I wish every man in our government at Washington could get that thought through his head. Frighten the people who meet the payrolls and who invest the money in this country, and you generate unemployment and depress values, even though business and financial conditions are sound. The business outlook is good. Take away the socialistic threats, and things will be all right'
Someone has sent me a table showing how erroneous is the idea that present taxes "soak the rich" and favor the man of small means. The table shows that in L929 a mat ried man with a $50 a week salary paid no, income tax; today he pays $191 a year. The married man making $65 a week in 1929 paid no income tax; now he pays $305 a year. In addition he pays a one per cent tax for social security; one and one-half cents a gallon tax on gasoline; 6 cents a gallon on lubricating oil; 10 cents a pound on
yellow margarine; 13 cents a pack on playing cards; 10 per cent tax on electric, gas, and oil appliances, and on musical instruments, sporting goods, and radios; 20 per cent tax on amusements, furs, jewelry, toilet preparations, handbags, luggage, and many other things. If he travels he pays a heavy tax on his transportation. Then come the hidden taxes which are not seen put are very much present in practically everything he buys. Add these all up and you get a sum that would scare the average taxpayer if he were definitely conscious of them. The average small income man knows taxes are heavy, but doesn't realize how heavY'
There is a Congressman named Rich in the Lower House at Washington today whose slogan is-"Where are you going to get the money?" He asks that question frequently and continually when spending is being considered. The other day he told a Congressional committee that in our government today there are 65 bureaus and bodies that lrave to do with statistics, 29 that lend government money, 34 that have to do with the acquisition of land by the government, 16 that deal with wild life preservation, 10 that deal with government construction, and 12 with home and community planning. As the old song went-"That's the way the money goes, pop *g.T ,1" weasel."
Right now the government demands $5,580,000,000 to finance the Marshall Plan in E;urope for the next 15 months. There are many who think it should be cut down, since European conditions are reported to be greatly improved. Henry Hazlitt, special writer for the popular business lnagazine "News Week," is fighting for a sharp reduction in this European aid money. Wonder how Mississippians must have felt when Hazlitt said in this magazine that the per capita income of the state of Mississippi f.or 1947 rvas lower than that of Britain, France, Denmark, and Sweden? He notes that Washington did not rush scads of money into Mississippi. He thinks exchange control inaugurated by the European governments is what creates the dollar shortage in those lands, and thus perpetuates the need for U. S. funds.

After hearing Churchill's masterful address the other night, a man remarked: "I consider it an honor to, live on the same planet with a man like Churchill." I got that same feeling as I listened to that speech. Not only were we listening, free, to one of the four or five greatest orators of all the ages, but likewise one of the greatest and most lion-hearted statesmxen *ot iU time. What a guy !
When he declared that only the atom bomb in the hands of the United States has saved Europe and Great Britain from direct attack by Russia, I believe he expressed the opinion of every honest, thinking American. Every time during the past three years when I heard some bell-mouthed blunderbuss in Washington talking about turning the bomb over to someone else, it made cold chills run up and down my spine. There is no other power to which that terrible weapon could be entrusted. It's bad enough to have such a responsibility ourselves. With that weapon in the hands of Russia, the darkness that knows no ending would settle down all over this world.

Construction of the model house, known as The Certrgrade National lIome, rvill be channeled through retail Iumber dealers. The house is designed by National Plan Service, Chicago, whose blueprint plans are familiar to Iumber dealers throughout America.
Initial announcement of the .program appeared with a full-page color advertisement in the April 9 issue of thc Saturday Evening Post, closely follorved by messages in the April issue of Farm Journal and in the Spring edition of Small Homes Guide. el house rvhich we have sponsored during the past decade. It promises to be even more popular then its predecessors. The first of our model homes had the distinction of receiving the first FHA commitment ever issued, at the tinrc of that agency's inception. In later years it r,vas follorverl by the popular Certigrade Quintuplets and the famous Certigrade Californian."
The Certigrade National Home is a three-bedroonr, single-story structure which represents the ultimate in efficient design. The exterior combines the graciousness and dignity of early Colonial architecture with the rambling spaciousness which is closely associated with the modern Western or Ranch-type home.
The home has been laid out in three different designs, to meet the requirements of builders in various sections clf the country. One design includes a full basement. A second design, intended for southern construction, is rvithout basement and has a utility room 8' x lA 6" in size to contain laundry equipment and hot water heater. A floor furnace or heater is located in the hall. The third design oi the Certigrade National Home also is without basemetrt and is executed for northern construction. It has a utility room 8' x 14' 2" to contain both laundry equipment an,,ifurnace or heating unit.
A single-car garage is a feature of all three designs. In the basement unit, the garage is connected to the house r,vith an attractive breezeway. In the two basement-less layouts, the utility room is placed between the house proper and the garage.
Exterior walls are designed for double-coursed cedar shingle or shake construction, and the roof likewise is of cedar shingles. The double-coursed wall construction produces heavy and attractive shadow lines between courses, accentuating the rambling, close-to-the-ground appearance of the home.
The efficiency of the floor plan is apparent in the full utilization of every inch of space available and the spaciousness that is achieved by the large living room with iis dining area, the efficient kitchen and snack space, as well as the three bedrooms, one of which is 1,1'x 14'.
Numerous other features command attention. An open porch at the side of the house, accessible from the living room, accentuates the appearance of size and spaciousness The service entry is at ground level. The hood protecting the front entry, the large picture window, ample windows providing sunlight and ventilation, are all ultra-modern notes that add considerably to the comfort, convenience and appearance of this model home. Included is a natural fireplace at one end of the living room and a stationary picture windo..v with two side windows open for ventilation.
The kitchen is on the efficient "U" plan for arrangement of cabinets, range and other facilities. Each bedroom has a large closet with sliding doors, and in the connecting hall there are linen and guest closets'
A disappearing stairway leads from the hall to the attic, where ample storage area is available.

\f. F. I. A. Review of Operatins Conditions In Early March
Reports of operators in rvestern Washington and Oregon and northern California as to conditions existing during the first half of March indicate that things are better than they wcre a month ago but are still far from perfect, according to tl-re Western Forest Industries Association, Portland, Ore. More than two-thirds of those reporting said that roads u'ere in poor shape still and that logging conditions 'ivere "poor" to "fair" but at least 73/o of them referred to conditions as "good." These conditions were, naturally, reflected in log supply which was reported as "limited" by 43/o of the Oregon operators and 75/" of those in Washington, the remainder finding the supply ample to heavy.
As one might expect, a good supply of freight cars existed everywhere except that a ferv shippers in Western Washington were having some difficulty in securing flat cafs.
Production r,r'as said to be decreasing in Northern California and in certain areas of Oregon but was increasing in Washington and increasing or steady throughout the region as a whole.
In regard to market conditions there was a lvide range of experiences. 44/o of those reporting said orders rn'ere increesing and 6-7 /" found then-r "plentiful," whereas the remainder said they.rvere decreasing or scarce. As to prices,50/c reported them "steady," 4O/o "decreasing" or "soft," u'hile 10ft said they were "increasing." Mill stocks rn'ere described as "normal" by about one-third of the reporters, "increasing" by 2O/o, "decreasing" by 25/o and either "high" or "low" lty the remainder' There rvas no uniformity in any area.

HOUR OF OCCURRENCE - INDUSTRIAL INJURIES IN LUMBER INDUSTRY
In the lumber industry, as in most other industries, there is a marked fluctuation in the number of industrial injuries rvhich occur at dillerent honrs of the day.
According to a special snrvey made by the Division o{ Labor Statistics and Research of the California DeparLment of Industrial Relations. the number of industrial injuries in the moruing increases steadily each horlr, reaching a peak betrveen 10 and 1l a.m. N{ore than 14 per cent oi all the accidents reported in July and August. 19.18, o.:ctrrred during this hour. This compares rn'ith 8 per cent <luring the l.rour betn'een 8 and 9 a.m.
As shorvn in the clock chart, tl-re number of injurics drops off slightll' betn'een 11 and 12 noon bnt rcmairrs relatively high.
Aftcr a very sharp decrease cluring the noon hour, thtr number again brrilds up each hour to a second peak bctrveerl 3 and 4 p.m. Approxirnatelr. 15 per cent of all acciclents occurred during this hour. Follou'ing this peak, thc number clrops off r'ery rapidll'.
Thc sharp fluctnation in the number oi injurics drrringthe b;rsic u-orl< day is indicatecl in the follon'ing tabulation'

'I'hc sharp peaks during certain hours of the day suggest that consicleratior.r 'be given by those in accident preventiorr u'orl< as to u-hat steps may be taken to reduce these peai<s :rrrrl thus reduce the over-all total of injuries.

(My old friend Walter Hull sent me the following darkey story, and wonders if it is good enough to rate this "Favorite Story" column. I think it is, so here it goes:)
Nehemiah Jackson sat in the death house at the State Penitentiary, waiting for the fateful hour when he was to take the short walk to the chair.
He had been convicted of first degree murder, and was to die within the hour. All the preparations had been made. The warden asked if there was any last request he wanted to make, and he asked if he could be allowed to talk to

This r,vood, being free of pitch, is receptive to paint, stain, varnish and other finishes. Painting exterior sidings and trim of West Coast hemlock gives the master craftsman a sense of complete satisfaction. The smooth, clear, unblemished surfaces supply the "canvas" upoll which the skilled worker can demonstrate his full ability.
Interiors-'rvhether in wide clear wall panels, mouldings and trim, or in West Coast hemlock floors-present a finished appearance highly pleasing to the owner, the architect and contractor. Mouldings and interior trim have a minimum tendency to split in nailing; they do not splinter : their color tones remain light, while their resistance t<r wear increases as they grow older. Few other.woods lend themselves so well to the handsome and varied finishing effects it is possible to achieve with West Coast hemlock.
West Coast hemlock also commands many industrial uses. It is easily machined to a satin finish. It glues easily, and has good holding power on fastenings. It makes excellent shelving, furnitttre, cabinets, ironing boards. kitchen interiors and millwork. The fact that it is tasteless and odorless makes it well suited for food containers. and its nail-holding power re'commends it for boxes and crates. Its strength, resilience, light weight and uniform texture have led to its wide acceptance in the manufacture of the finest industrial and fire ladders. During the Second World War these same qualities resulted in its very extensive use in the production of airplanes and gliders. The common grades of West Cost hemlock make first-rate ir-rdustrial floors because of their freedom from splintering.
Hardwood Yard Specializes In Honduras Mahogany
Pacific Hardwood Sales Co., whose yard is at 2020 Livingston Street, Oakland 6, specializes in Honduras Mahogany, Primavera, and Spanish Cedar, and also handles Philippine Mahogany, Ponderosa and Sugar pine.
Fred R. Branch, manager, got his start in the lumber business in 1939 with Gorman Lumber Sales Co.. Oakland. During the war he was employed by the United States Government in Central America, and while there, being interested in lumber, investigated the possibilities for importing Central American hardwoods. After the war' he began'as an importer of meltow texture Honduras Mahogany, and later opened his own yard in Oakland.
West Coast hemlock factory and shop grades contain clear cuttings of definite percentage, size and quality. They are available in either vertical or flat grain, and are useC to advantage by millwork plants, cabinet makers, sash, door and furniture factories. Vertical grain West Coast hernlock is among the few native woods recommended for the manufacture of Venetian blinds.
Peculiar to the Pacific watershed, West Coast hemlock flourishes on the coastal slope from California to Alaska. A rapid producer, it assures world markets of an ample permanent supply of high quality lumber under the modern forestry methods now being practiced.

The product, a compressecl wood called Staypak, u'as perfected by the Western I'ine Association Research Laboratory in Portland, Ore., and is no\\r ready for commercial manufacture. The process has been made available to members of the Association.
Staypak cliffers from other hardboards made of compressed wood fibers in that it is the result'of compression of a whole board dou'n to approximately one-third of its original thickness. The natural 'ivood grain is retained and the board comes from the press with a natural high gloss. \Vater rvill remove the gloss but it can be maintained by clear-coating the board either before or after pressing.
Tests shor,v Staypak to be from three to ten-fold stronger than the original natural rvood. It is ten times harder and is resistant to chemical attack, abrasion and scuffing.

The exceptional hardness of Staypak-its specific gravity is 1.3S-together with flame and moisture-resistant qualities, make it an ideal material for flooring, paneling, bar and table tops, tool and knife handles, bearings, shuttles, furniture, bowling alleys and signs. A multitude of other uses are expected to develop when commercial mannfacture is started.
Staypak can be produced from nearly any softu'ood of

low resin content. Experiments conducted with White Fir, a lumber species in plentiful supply throughout the rvestern states, have been outstandingly successful. Engelmann Spruce and Western Red Cedar can also be used.
Initial rvork on Staypak rvas done at the Forest Products Laboratory in Madison, Wis., but the problem of end and edge expansion after pressure had been removed prevented its economical manufacture. At this stage the project $'as taken on by the Western Pine lab where a press rvas ultimately developed to prevent the moisture loss during compression which caused the boards to later pick up atmospheric moisture and expand after release.
Lab engineers describe the process by 'ivhich Staypak is made as essentially one of compression and heat. A boarci subjected to a pressure of 1500 pounds per square inch at a temperature of 325 degrees Fahrenheit within the press. It remains there for a relatively short time.
No bonding agent is used to hold the board to its com-pressed size. The natural lignin in the wood flows under heat and acts as the cementing agent. Once pressed, the board will not'lose its shape under subsequent moisture or atmospheric conditions.
A piece of Staypak feels as hard and heavy as a smooth piece of slate. Any mark or design cut into the wood before pressing is still visible although not perceptible to the touch after processing. Designs may be impressed into the wood by applying resin-impregnated colored paper prior to pressing. The paper becomes part of Staypak in the press.and forms a continuous smooth surface with the rest of the piece.
But very probably the majority of manufacturers wrll prefer to market the product in its natural state. l'Manufacturers of other materials often try to make their products look like wood," a lab spokesman said. "We already have that appearance in Staypak-and we'd like it to stay that uray."
Staypak can be installed by gluing or rvith screws inserted through pre-bored holes. Metal-cutting or carbide tools are used to shape it. It has a stability far greater than any other natural wood, hard or soft. Staypak can be laid as flooring either in strips or like tile and can bc either stained or left natural. Although not fireproof, tests have demonstrated it to be extremely slow in kindling.
Staypak will act as an agent toward greater forest conservation, too, by furnishing another use for White Fir which occupies an increasing proportion of the nation's timber resources.

Eternql
Cicero said: "Whatever that may be which feels, which has knowledge, which wills, which has the power of growth, it is celestial and divine, and for that reason must of necessity be eternal."
The Lotus Flower i
In that dusk land of mystic dream, Where dark Osiris sprung, It bloomed beside his sacred stream, While yet the world was young. And every secret nature told, Of golden wisdom's power, Is nestled still in every fold, Within the Lotus Flower. -Wm. Winter.
Men The World Wcits For
The world is looking for men who are not for sale; men who are honest and sound from center to circumference, true to the heart's core; men with consciences as steady as the needle to' the pole; men who will stand for the right if the heavens totter and the earth reels; men who can tell the truth and look the world right in the eye; men who neither brag nor run, flag nor finch; men who can have courage without shouting it; men in whom the everlasting life runs still, deep, and strong; men who know their message, and tell it; men who know their business and attend to it; men who know their place and fill it; men who will not lie, shrink, or dodge; men who are not to'o lazy to work, nor too proud to be poor; men who are willing to eat what they. have earned and wear what they have paid for; men who are not ashamed to say "no" with emphasis, and who are not ashamed to. say-"1 can't afford it."
The Recson
Ffer face was wan and haggard
As they led her from the floor, The lady's shoe was number two, But her foot was number four.
Hot Dog Depression
There was a man who lived by the side of the road and sold hot dogs. He was hard of hearing, so he had no radio. He had trouble with his eyes, so he read no newspap€rs. But he sold good hot dogs.
He put up signs on the highway telling how good they were. FIe stood by the side of the road and cried: "Buy a hot dog, Mister?" And people bought. He increased his meat and bun orders. He bought a bigger stove to take care of his trade.
He finally got his son home from college to help him out. But then something happened. His son said "Father,
haven't you been listening to the radio? There is a big depression on. The European situation is terrible. The domestic situation is worse."
Whereupon the Father thought: "Well, my son's been to college, he reads the papers and listens to the radio, and he ought to know." So he cut down his meat and his bun orders. He took down his advertising signs. And he no longer bothered to stand out in the highway to sell his hot dogs.
And his hot dog sales fell away over night. "You're right, son," the father said to the boy, "We certainly are in the middle of a great depression."-(The Clarkson Letter.)
Doctor Talk
A bunch of internes in a big hospital were enjoying a game of poker after hours in a back room. Came a knock at the door.
"Who comes there?" one of them yelled.
Said the caller: "This is rigor mortis. May I set in?"
So Grect Is My Love
I never could measure my love for you, For it reaches beyond the sun, It is wider than width and deeper than depth, And longer than distance run; It flows from the highest mountain top, To the field in the valley below, It extends from the sky to the bed of the sea, And as far as the wind may blow. No, I never could measure the scope of my love, By anything old or new, But I know it is endless as time itself. And it all belongs to you.
-James J. Metcalfe.
O. Henry
"On June 2, L910, Fate stopped the hand of O. Henry. Only a few minutes before the end he is reported to have said to the nurse: "Turn up the lights. I don't want to go home in the dark." The lights were turned up, and O. Henry went home.
"Where that home is or what that home is to which good men go when they die, I know not. A land that is fairer than day? Maybe. Beautiful Isle of Somewhere? Possibly. The Father's house in which there are many mansions? Perhaps. A have of rest for the weary? Likely. An uncharted sea beyond the moaning bar? I do not know. But this I do know, free from any alloy of doubt; the home folks, where he went, levs hirn."-William Wash Williams.
