Portland, Oregon, April l9-Good winter weather is the big story in the Douglas fir region's first quarter lumber production report.
Said H. V. Simpson, executive vice president of West Coast Lumbermen's Association: "An open winter has played a big part in keeping lttnrber output high enough to care for the nation's defense tleecls, mititary recluirements and most domestic housing ancl industrial uses."
First 13 weeks production in 1951 is larger than either of the last two years, totaling 2,657,885,m0 board feet. Mills were operating on slow bell in thc rvinters of. 1949 and 1950 due to severe storms.
Cargo mills shipped only 348,.514,000 board feet by water to the Atlantic Coast during the three months, a drop of 90 million feet below last year's same period' Millmen said a shortage of shipping space has had some direct influence.
West Coast export shipments picked up during first quarter of 1951 with 150 million feet loaded as against 41 million for 1950's first quarter. California cargo loadings also picked up, with 1951 first quarter totals at 190 million feet compared to 170 million feet last year for the same period.
The weekly average of West Coast lumber production in March was 203,453,000 b.f. or 113.2/o of the 1946-1950 average. Orders averaged 225,015,000 b.f.; shipments 228,652,000 b.f. Weekly averages for February were: Production 207,066,000 b.f. (ll5'2% of the 1946-1950 average); orders 184,804,000 b.f.; shipments 200,554,000 b.f.

Thirteen weeks of 1951 cumulative production 2,657,885,000 b.f.; thirteen weeks of 1950 2,149,6n,N0 b.f.; thirteen weeks of. 1949 2,2n395,00O b.f
Orders for thirteen weeks of l95l breakdown as follows: Rail and truck 1,96O,718,m0 b.f.; domestic cargo 569,870,000 b.f.; export 150,055,000 b.f.; local 163,130,000 b.f. The Industry's unfilled order file stood at 945,604,000 b.f. at the end of March ; gross stocks at 672,127,000 b.f.

J. H. IIrL Ro-oloctcd ProridcntThe convention lvas said to llc one of thc bcst ever hcld by tht: Associati<ltt, and oltc of the tnost enjoyable. The vari<ltts sessions u'ere well atterrded. Therc was a wcll-chosen list of speakers, some of whonr are trationally knolvn, who discussc<l subjects of topical interest to the clealers.
The most popular single feature on the program was the Panel I)iscussion on h'riday afternoon, when eight men, well informed in their line answered the questions pttt to thenl by the Moderator, President J. H. Kirk. lt is likely that a special Association meeting may be held in the fall, with a panel discussion as the main featttre. The subjects most discussecl rvere inventory cclntrol, credits, and employee relations.
Wednesday Morning
The Erluipurent and Products llxhibits in the Gold Ballr()onl opened at 9:00 a.m., and rvere open on Thursday and Friday at the same time.
Registration, in charge of Claire Zimmeruran of the Association, began at 9:50 a.m. Particularly interesting to the dealers was the redwood desk used for this purpose. This desk and its fittings were designed by the California Redwood Association as a demonstration of the utility of common grades in short lengths and narrow widths of redrvood lumber. South City Lumber & Supply Co., South San Francisco, was the fabricator.
There was a ladies' luncheon and fashion shorv in the Venetian Room of the Fairmont Hotel.
President J. H. Kirk presided at the "Kick-Off" luncheon. He welcomed the large gathering, and introduced Ray B. Cox of the Built-In-Fixture Co., Berkeley, who missed the last convention as a result of illness.

Wednesday Afternoon
H. R. "Cotton" Northup, executive vice president of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association, Washington, D. C., whose topice was "A Report From Washington," was the first speaker. He declared that he is an optimist about the future of the industry, the construction industry, and America. He gave as his reasons the good volume of business in the first quarter, and indications for good volume
"Cold \\/ar-Hot Controls" u'as the subject chosen by 'l'honras S, llolden, president of the I,'. W. l)odge Corpor:rtion, New York, construction news publishers in leading cities. Mr. Holden said that the coming squeeze on constrtrction will proballly not be much nr()re severc than a normal nrarket rear:tion from last year's boonr. "llegttlation X, linriting real cstate credit, and Regulatiorr W curlring (:()nsunlcr crc<lit, u'trukl have been necessary cven if thcre had been no Kore:rn crisis," the speaker said. He stated that in his opinion the tapering oft of home building to {t50,000 units, anrl the limiting of recreational and colnmercial building rvill be offset by large increases in military construction projects, clefense manufactttring plants and power projects, which rvill continue until late 1952.
Frank E. Cox, Berkeley, sales and research departrnent of thc Karvneer Company, spoke on "Main Street and Monkey Glands." He said that many shabby stores and other business places on nrany Main Streets should be rejuvenated, and modernized and increased customer parking be provided to compete with new outlying shopping districts. "I-umber nrerchants can help other merchants by serving as a source of infornration al>out new modernization facilities, and lumber dealers should nrodernize their own places of business," Mr. Cox stated. He shou'ed a nttmber of "before and after" photographs of stores that had been modernized, and gave rnany instances of ll'here greatly increased business had followed modernization.
A Hoo-Hoo Concat was held in the California Room at 5:D p.m. Thirty-five kittens were initiated and there were four reinstatements. Full particulars of the concat will be found elsewhere in this issue

I thought of those words of Tacitus as I sat today and lirtened to Douglas MacArthur deliver the oration that ertablishcd him as one of the greatest orators of all time; in addition to being one of the world's mightieet military men, and one of America's outstanding patriotE.
***
I knew the feeling as I listened to the great man's voice that Plato must have known when he declared that he thanked his gods that he "lived in the age of Socrates." As I sit here, the tremendous thrill of the oration still making my blood to jump, I am glad and proud that I live in the age of Douglas MacArthur, and had the opportunity of hearing that address.
During the last war I got a tremendous thrill from the eloquence of Britain's mighty Churchill. I declared and will always believe that Churchill ranks among the half dozen great orators of all the ages. Yet Churchill in his most inspired moments never rose to a more sublime height of oratory than did Douglas MacArthur this day.
{.*!t
My great regret, of course, is that I could not see as well as hear him. His magnificent carriage, his kingly bearing that makes him stand out among ordinary men like a towering mountain peak, all backing up his heroic thoughts, magnificent phrases, stimulating words, and inspiring voice and delivery, can well"account for the boundless enthusiasm of those who did hear.and see him.
"Like an armed warrior-like a plumed knight," he faced the audience that filled the Congressional chamber to overflowing, and also an unseen audience that comprised a great portion of the thinking people of the entire world. He looked as Shakespeare said-"a soldier fit to stand with Caesar, and give directions." No man, even the most obtuse, ever looked upon MacArthur and ssksfl-"fs he anybody in particular?" For, unlike most of our leaders of today, it is evident at a glance that this is a man very much in Particular'
The most decorated American soldier of today, he wore no decorations to catch the eye or impress the audience. "But honor's seal is o,n his brow, and valor's star is on his breast." He, himself, was all that was needed to make him such a center of attention as that rostrum had never known before. For he is. indeed, the most DECORATIVE Amer-
ican soldier. In a rtrictly phpicel teruc, hittory eupplica ua with no morc inrpiring milttary figurc. Hc har ttat indcfinable look that comes only to an occarional human, but which aometimes appears in a thorob:ed horae. Horaemen call it "the look of thc eagle." *
To those who know and appreciate abaolute grandeur in the shape of a man, MacArthur invariably brings a light case of gooae-pimples. I have eought in vain for yearo to diagnosc this personal equation that marke him and sets him apart from other men. Whatever it is, MacArthur has it, and dmoet has a monopoly on it. He aeems always grave, always studiously thoughtful, always well within himself, always the personification of restrained power. I have often thought that no man could possibly be as great as MacArthur looks; but today, as f fistened to his spectacular oratory and heard him sweep upward step by step as the passion of his plea caught and carried him along, I made up my mind that I had misjudged him. The man IS as great as he lcoks; perhap*s g*reater.
As our readers will attest, I have frequently of late prayed aloud in this column for the coming of brave and eloquent patriots gifted with oratorical and patriotic fervor, to provide inspiration and stimulation so shockingly lacking in this nation of late. I have been saying-and repeating-that what this country needs perhaps more than it needs anything else today, is more and better exhortations to patriotism, to love of country, to love of flag. And I have been regretting the absence of such men. And now comes MacArthur ! Can I be blarned for believing that this could be the answer to my prayer? Commentators tell us that there was no dry eye in that great audience that listened in person to the General. Even those political men of little minds who came to scoff, remained to weep. Human grandeur is plainly visible even to the smallest of humans. To mediocrity, greatness is unforgivable. But in moments of great emotional appeal such as the eloquence of MacArthur provided, the more ignoble elements of human nature give way to those finer instincts that lurk somewhere in every human soul.

Even on the street

people gathered in frequent knots to hear the speech coming through the open door of some store, they were frankly and without shame mopping their eyes. Something tremendous, intangible, hitherto unknown to them, had crept into their souls at those stirring words. They knew without telling, that a great, great man, and a mighty voice had come back to his homeland. They knew, as all of us who listened knew, that

WlrH ASBESIOS SHINGtES: J-MAsbestos Siding Shingles may be applied directly to J-M Veathertite Sheathing, by using self-clinching or self-locking nails, such as Esnail, or the new Loc-Nail illustrated in inset. Drive nails at any convenient points -no need to locate or avoid studs. After the base of rhe nailhead strikes the shingle, funher tapping flattens the head and clinches the foor against the back side of the Weathertite Sheathing.
O Notice how easily J-M Weathertite Sheathing is handled by one man. He can make fast progress, too, covering alarge area with each big shoet. Aod he can lift the sheets high overhead without help, getting more work done without the use of ladders or scaffolding.
Many builders have found that it takes only 8 or 9 man-hours to apply 1OOO feet of J-M Veathertite-a saving of at least 3o% in labor!
And they report a 75% reduction in waste material. At the same time, the homeowner gets a better home, because 'Veathertite is a J-M Insulating Board Product: it insulates as it builds.
For application veftically, J-M Weathertite Sheathing comes 251321| or y2rr thick, four feet wide, and in lengths to reach from sill to plate. For horizontal application, the sheets are 2r x 8r. and,25l32tl thick. "V-tite" joint (see inset above) prevents infiltration of weather.
The J-M trademark appears prominently on each board, instantly identifying the builder as a user of qtality building materials. For further information, write Johns-Manville, Box 29O, N. Y. 16, N. Y.

Along the ehoree of the Bea we rometimes find a giant granite bouldcr, etanding like a sentinel on guard. The billows and wavea of countless ycaru have failed to move it from its baee; invincible it stands, defying the lash of the waves and the fury of the winds, and marking wcll the an' cient boundary. Now and then aB we walk through life, we find a man who reminds us of that granite pillar. He Etands where his God and his destiny placed him, revering his flag, his country, and itg Constitution; honorablc, clean, a Christian gentleman who cannot be moved by the high tides of ignorance, or by the calumnies heaped upon him by the pygmies and lilliputians of the world. The tidal waves of the mad times in which we live, affect him not. Unafraid, he holds to the old faiths, and fights for thc proven thingsSuch a man is Douglas MacArthur. On such qualities as he possesses the future of this nation entirely depends.

The CHEMONITE process was developed in the iaboratories of the Universiw of California. A solution of arsenic and copper is forced, , under pressure, deep into ' 1ood. cells, giving enduring, erectrve Protectron agarnst decav and insect destruction. Test'pieces of CHEMONITEtreated wood. buried in termite-infested ground 24 years ago, show no signs of deterioration.
National Vood Treating Corp. supplies CHEMONITEtreated lumber or will treat your own lumber with this lasting, low-cost ptotection against termites and rot.

Was it "Cuffworn," was it "Collar," was it "Popcorn," rvas it "Dollar?" On the telephone it was just plain consternation, so-Floyd Yates and Jack Pollard rvho have been operating as Ruffcorn-Pollard, Inc., have announced their new narne "Southwest Plywood Corp."
When this firm began business a few years ago, they limited their activities to the distribution of Douglas Fir Plywcod and I'hilippine Mahogany Plywood. They quickly realized there rvas a real need in the building industry for a more complete line and as soon as was possible they added l'hilippine Mahogany lumber, mouldings for trim, flush doors and T&G Tropicwall. The trade's response was imnrediate.
It requires only a short conversation tvith these men to <lctermine that they are most enthusiastic about the products they handle. A new warehouse just completed permits a larger, more diversified inventory which, it is hoped, rvill alleviate to some extent the maddenir-rg shortages of ' the past.
Jack Pollard considers hirnself practically a native son, having been in Los Angeles since 1929. Yates is from Seattle where he was associated for many years with one of the larger plyrvood mills. He likes this California sunshine and feels firmly embedded in Los Angeles.
Southwest Plywood Corp. wishes its friends to know that only the name is changed-that ownership, management, personnel and a genuine desire to be of service remain the same.

Tclk bv F. B. I Agent
Jesse R. Wagner, resident agent in the San Francisco Bay area for the Federal Bureau of Investigation, was the speakcr at the dinner meeting of Hoo-Hoo Club No. 39, held at the Claremont Hotel, Bsrkeley, April 16.
Mr. Wagner's subject was "The Responsibilities of the F.B.I. in the Current Emergency," and his informal talk was most interesting to his audience. The F.B'I. was formed in 1908, he said, and he told of a number of cases which prove the fact that the department never lets up in its efforts to arrest criminals who come under its jurisdiction. He rnentioned incidentally that out of nearly '100 kidnapings since the Bureau rvas formed, only two remain unsolved. He gave the information that there were 1,800,000 major crirnes in the United States in 1950, which means one every 18 seconds, and said that they rvelcome facts in regard to crimes, fronr the public. The speaker answered a large number of guesfions.
The door prize of two Reveille tickets was won by Kermit Noble of the Western Sierra Lumber Co., Pleasanton, Calif. Other prizes of one Reveille ticket each were won .by John Duarte, Insulite Division of Minnesota & Ontario Paper Co., Oakland, and Andy Anderson, Lincoln Lumber ,Co., Oakland.

Bob Meyer, Home Lumber & Supply Co., San Leandro, Calif., 'rvas chairman of the evening, and introduced the speaker.

Charlca Russell, the great Montana cowboy'artist-writer, died long ago when he was juet completing a book of reminiscences and picturcs, called "Plowed Under."
Since he waE a near and dear friend of Will Rogers, it was suggested to Will that it would hclp the book a lot if he would write an introduction to it. The kindly humoriet wrote one in the form of a letter addressed to his friend Russell, addresg heaven, and it was printed in the front of the book like this:
"Dear Charlic: There ain't much news here to tell you. You know the Big Boes gent a hand over and got you 8o quick I gucss He must have needed a good man prety bad. I hear they been workin' short-handed over t'here pretty much all the time, I guess it's hard for Him to get hold of good men. Gosh, they are just gettin' Ecarce everywhere.
"I bet you hadn't been up there three days until you got out your old pencil and was drawin' something funny about some of the old cowpunchers. I'll bet you Mark Twain, old Bill Nye, and Whitcomb Riley and a whole bunch of those old joshers was just a-waitin' for you to pop in with the latest ones. What kind of a bird is Washington and Jefrerson? I bet they are regular fellows when you meet'cm, ain't they? Most big men are.

"I would like to see the bunch that gathers 'round you the first time you tell the one about puttin' the Limburger cheese in the'old nester's whiskers. Don't tell that one, Charley, until you get Abe Lincoln around you; he'd love that. I bet you and him kinda throw in together when you get acquainted. Darn it, when I get to thinkin' of all them top hands up there, if I could just hold a horse wranglin' job with them, I wouldn't mind followin' that wagon myself.
"You will run into my old Dad up there, Charley, for he was a real cowhand, and I bet he's runin' a wagon; and you will pop into some well-kept ranch over there under some cool shady trees, and you will be asked to have some dinner. I bet it will be the best one you ever tasted in your life. Well, when you are thankin' the women folks, you just tell the sweet-lookin' old lady you know her boy back on an outfit you used to rope for, and tell the daughters that you knew their brother, and if you see a cute little rascal runnin' around there-kiss him for me.
"Well, can't write you no more, Charley, the damn paper's all wet; it must be rainin' in this old bunkhouse. Of course we are all just hangin' on here long as we can. I don't l<now why we hate to go, 'cause we know it's better over there. Maybe it's cause we haven't done anything that will live after we are gone .... . but, boy ! Did you climb that hurdle-and how!
"From your old friend, Will."

Applicant: "Illnesg."
Employer: "What was the trouble?"
Applicant: "The boss got sick of me."
His Plcrque
He was newly rich and sclf-important, and in talking to the journalist, he was fishing for compliments.
"Do you think they will put a plaque on my house when I die?" he asked.
The journalist never hesitated. "Surely they will," he said.
"And what will they put on it?"
"Just one thing; 'House to rent.' "
Enterprise
The power to choose the work I do, to grow and have the proper view,
To know and feel that I am free, to stand erect, not bow the knee.
To be no chattel of the state' to be the master of my fate, To dare to risk, to lose, to win, to make my own career begin,
To serve the world in my own way' to gain in wisdom day by day.
With hope and zest to climb, to rise,I call that PRIVATE ENTERPRISE.
Suspicious?
"D'you know, Mrs. 'Arris, I sometimes wonder 'usband's getting tired of me?"
"Whatever makes you think that, Mrs. Higgins?"
"Well, 'e ain't been 'ome for seven years."
Time Fleeth
Fill the goblet, kiss the fair, For fortune smiles todaY; Where shall you be tomorrow? Where?
. Time fleeth fast away.
O, gather roses while they blow, Tomorrow's not today, Live while you can, such is my creed, Time fleeth fast awaY'-Greim.
