How Lumber Looks New busines booked at the lumber mills during the week ended April 29 was not only heavier than any previous week of 1933 but was greater dran any week of 1932 except two in September, this record being shared by both hardwciods and coftwoods, according to telegraphic reports to the Nationd Lumber Manufacturers Association from regional associations covering the operations of 647 leading softwood and hardwood mille. Lumber shipments were the highest of any 1933 wer:k and softwood production also exceeded its previous 1933

record. Al[ production totalled ltTrrtTrOOO feet; orders 186r#7rOGo feet; shipments 1631678ro0o feet. All regions showed excess of orders over output, sofgwood orders being 54 pet cent above cut and hardwood orders more than twice the

Douglas Fir-A total of 252 down and operating mills which reported to the Vest Coast Lumberments Association for the week ended April 29 produced 67rt69,97t board feet of lum. ber. This was an increase of lr64lr3E7 feet or 2.5Vo over theit cut in the preceding week. The average weekts ptoduction of this group of sawmills in 1933 has been 58rt87r26 feet; during was 66,14491860 the same period oL l9r2, their weekly ^vetage feet.

The new business reported by 179 mills for the same week was 8118391639 board feet against a production of. 61,851,537 feet and shipments of 79r794ro48 feet. -- Shipments were over producion by 29.O4Vo and current sales were over production by 32.5/6. ---The ordets booked for the week by this group of identical mills were more than their ordets of the preceding week by 18,039,477 feet, or zE.tEo. Judge Merrill E. Otis overruled a motion on April 24 lor a rehearing in the Long-Bell Lumber Company re,ceivership action brought in the federal court at Kansas City, Mo.,

by W. G. Hutson, Jr., of Lawrence, Kans., and W. Verdner

Carson, of Quincy, Ill. On October 15, 1932, Judge Otis dismissed bills of complaint brought by the defendants.

In the Long-Bell ,case, Judge Otis said he desired to give additional opinion to that already ,cited, although he pointed out that it is not the practice of the court to hand down opinions in refusing motions for rehearing and motions for new trials. In the additional opinion, he stated: "It would not be fair to say that as the cases have gone forward the plaintiffs have changed positions and have advanced first one and then another.theory; but it is quite fair to say that there have been such changes in emphasis as have made it difficult to lay hold of what, in view of counsel for the plaintiffs, really are the vital issues.

"In the two opinions filed, I have stated the grounds on

which I have thought a receivership for the Long-Bell Lumber Company should be denied. In the preparation of those opinions I interpreted the cases as primarily seeking a receivership.

"Upon that was placed all the emphasis in the pleadings, briefs and oral arguments prior to the entry of the decree.

But in the petitions for rehearing and in the written and oral arguments supporting them, the matter of receivership is subordinated and characterized as merely incidental to other relief now said to be what primarily is sought by the plaintiffs.

"From this viewpoint I have gone through the testimony in these cases once more. I have carefully considered the enlarged argument of council and -additional authorities they have cited. But I have not been convinced that a re' hearing should be granted."

MAKES AIRPLANE TRIP SOUTH FROM NORTHWEST

T. B. Lawrence, Lawrence-Philips Lumber Co., Los Angeles, returned from Portland, Ore., on Sunday, April 30, by airplane following word that Mrs. Lawren,ce was seriously ill with pneumonia. He reached Los Angeles at 6:30 P. M. that evening. He was in Aberdeen, Wash., when informed of his wife's illness, and left for Portland by rail where he took a plane South. Mrs. Lawrence is now showing steady improvement. Mr. Lawrence was in the Northwest on a.business trip with A. W. Hart, of Los Angeles, who is associated with the Lawrence-Philips Lumber Co. and W. H. Wood, of the Hart-Wood Lumber Co., San Francisco.

Right, Mr. President ! They never WERE so intended. But THAT has been their result from the day they were created. Cut-throat and destructive competition have been the unnatural children of the anti-trust laws almost from the beginning. The anti-trust laws for the past decade have been absolutely and utterly destructive to industry; labor has been crucified upon them; corunerce has been wrecked by them.

Personally, I feel that the most hopeful thing that has been said at Washington with regard to industry of late, is the suggestion of a governmental partnership such as Mr. Roosevelt suggests above, a lessening of unintelligent restrictions against industry, a sanctioning of such righteous working agreements between men in the same line of business as will enable them to operate their business at a profit, under reasonable and fair conditions to employees, and a removal of the fear of the anti-trust laws which at present forbids intelligent and proper cooperation between business men. A resolution was unanimonsly adoptecl expressing appreciation for the position taken by President Roosevelt in his message to Congress recommending legislation to protect the small-home owners of the country from mortgage foreclosrlres. The resolution follows : WHEREAS, The President of the United States yesterday addressed to Congress a message recommending legislation designed to protect the small-home owners of the country from "inequitable enforced liquidation, in a time of general distress," and WHEREAS, The lumber industry of the United States, one of the chief suppliers of the materials used in the building and repairing of American homes since Revolutionary times, has 'rvatched tvith grave concern the recent movement in mortgage liquidation of homes, and has seen. in the serious losses taken by families throughout the nation, a menace to future home orvnership and to familv stability; therefore be it

Former Naval Officer Talks To Service Clubs Ben C. Phillips, sales representative of the Nicolai Door Sales Co., San Francisco, is in demand as a speaker before various service clubs and other organizations in his territory. He has recently been talking to a number of clubs on the subject of "srveeping the North Sea Mine Barrage."

He made this talk to the Lions Club, San Anselmo, ott April 4, at the request of Dolf Doherty of the Larkspur Lumber Co., Larkspur, and also spoke at the meeting of the Lions Club, Tracy, April 19, at the invitation of Roy Burnett of the Tracy Lumber Co. His next talk on this subject will be at the meeting of the High Trvelve Club, Stockton, on May 19, invited by Charlie Bird, of the Stockton Lumber Co. Mr. Phillips speaks with authority on this subject. He u'as lieutenant, senior grade, in the Navy during the World War, and immediately after the cessation of hostilities was in command of one of the Navy mine sweepers engaged in removing unexploded mines from the North Sea. He describes this hazardous work in his talk, which is of such an interesting nature that he has received many requests to speak at club meetings all over Northern California.

Bob Osgood Handling Sales For Cadwallader-Gibson

Will Operate Mill ln Fresno

R. S. (Bob) Osgood is back in Los Angeles and is now sales manager for the Cadwallader-Gibson Co., Inc. He represented the Wheeler-Osgood interests in Southern California for a long period, but for the past two years he was connected with the Washington Veneer Co., of Olympia, Wash., with headquarters in Chicago and New York.

The Cadwallader-Gibson Co.. Inc.. manufacturers and distributors of Philippine mahogany, report that they have completed their new sawmill at Butauanan in the Philippine Islands and are now ready to operate. The new mill has a .capacity of one and one half million feet per month and on short notice can be increased to three times this capa'city. Thqy have abandoned their old sawmill at Sitaco. Roy Barto, president of the company, who has been in the Philippine Islands since the latter part of February inspecting their new mill and lumber operations there, is expected to return to Los Angeles about the middle of the month. The Pacific Coast headquarters of the company are at 3628 Mines Ave., Los Angeles, Calif.

R. H. Byles and H. B. Jamison are starting a sawmill and logging operation in Fresno,county, which will operate under the name of the Byles and Jamison Lumber Co. Mr. Byles, who was general manag'er of the Sugar Pine Lumber Co., at Pinedale, Calif., announced his resignation effective May 1, however, he will ,continue to look after su,ch business operations the ,company may have for an indefinite time. Mr. Jamison was formerly sales manager of the Sugar Pine Lumber Co. ' The sawmill will be located in the Shaver Lake district, and will supply lumber for a box factory at Fresno which will be operated by the General Box Distributors. The lumber will be transported from the mill to Fresno by truck. Roy Stanley will be the Fresno manager of the General Box Distributors.

Home Loan Banks Swing Into Action i

; Washington, April 27.-The Federal Home Loan Bahk system is now functioning actively, and it believes that the reported reduction in the rate of residential mortgage foreclosures is partly due to that fact. The Home Loan Banks have now granted applications for about $50,000,000 worth of loans to member institutions and about half that amount has been paid out. It is expected that applications will soon be going,through at the rate of around $20,000,000 a month.

1932 Lumber Output Washington, May 4.-Lumber production in 1932 was approximately 9,500,000,000 feet as indicated by preliminary report of identical mills just released by the U. S. Census -Bureau. This compares with 36,886,032,000 f.eet in 1929.

The reports of 508 identical large mills, representing in l93l 52.2 per ,cent of the lumber production of the country, show produ,ction in 1932 41.4 per cent below that of 1931' Production in 1931 was t6,522,643 M feet, as reported by the Census Bureau. The percentage of decrease 'in 1932 gives production of 9,682,000,000 feet but the Census Bureau calls attention to the fact that it is likely the per cent of decrease in the total production of the country was somewhat larger than shown by the identical mills covered by this report, since probably a larger proportion of the small mills than of the large ones were idle in 1932, also it is probable that their cut declined more.

The National Lumber Manufacturers Association at the beginning of the year forecast this production figure of.9l billion feet, based upon its Barometer reports. These reports for 7932 and 1931 showed decline of 41.3 per cent, within a tenth of one per cent of the Census report.

According to the Census figures, the Lake States suffered ,comparatively greater decline in 1932 as compared with a 1931 than did any other section of the country, or 65 per cent. The great lumber-producing statei of Washington and Oregon recorded a decline of 43.6 per cent; the South of 38.6 per cent. Mills in these two se'ctions represented 62 per ,cent of the total number reporting and their cut was 70 per cent of that shown lor 1932.

In the two year comparison, the North Carolina Pine region showed decline of 19.5 per cent; California of 28 per cent and the States of Idaho and Montana, 49.5 per'cent' Total produ'ction reported by the 508 mills in L932 was 5,05L,944 M feet; in 1931, 8,621,243 M feet.

The Census was prompt in issuing these figures, their last reports being received only two days before the report was sent out. If the lumber schedules were returned to the Bureau more promptly by the mills, these important figures would be available much earlier in the year.

S. S. Skidmore, Pioneer Lumberman of Southern California, Succumbs Prominent Figure in the Retail Lumber Business for Over Fifty Years Stephen Schuyler Skidmore, pioneer retail lumberman, clied at his home in Downey, Tuesday evening, May 9. He

had been a resident of California for over sixty years. ancl was connected with the retail lumber business in Southern California for over fifty years. He rvas 78 years of age.

Mr. Skidmore was born October 25, 1855, in Cass Coun-

California and Mexico, and a ferv miles east of the sea-

shore, the ranch property still stands where the Skidmore family made their first California home. Seeking to rest up their stock after the hard and tedious trip across the plains, the family moved up into the Cuyamaca Valley where they did their part towards carving history in this pioneer state. Shortly after locating in the Cuyamaca Val-

ley, his father discovered a piece of float quartz which proved to be literally veined with virgin gold, and after considerable exploitation the mother lode was found and named the Stonewall Jackson Mine which later proved to be one of the famous mines of the West.

Disposing of their interests, the family came to Los Angeles in 1871 and located in the Los Nietos Valley rvhere they made their home in the communit;r of Downey.

Mr. Skidmore followed farming for a time, and later taking a position with the Southern Pacific Railway Company, he was transferred to Casa Grand e, Arizona. It was during that time, 1873, that the town of Downey was subdivided

by Governor Downey. Downey was then the terminus of the Southern Pacifi,c railroad.

Mr. Skidmore married Miss Eliza Pautrsell in 1882. She crossed the plains with her parents in the early 7O's from Missouri, locating in Booneville, Mendocino County, Cali; fornia. Later they came south settling in the Los Nietos Valley. They have one son, Grey M. Skidmore, who has been associated with his father in the lumber business at Downey.

Near the close of the Civil War, 1865, the family moved to Waco, Texas. On May 6, 1869, a well equipped wagon train, which was organized by his father left Waco for California. Mr. Skidmore, then a boy of 14 years, drove a team of six and eight mules, often doing scout duty for Indians, and enduring the hardships encountered in crossing the plains eminently fitting him to build a pioneer west. The wagon train after crossing West Texas, Arizona, then the Colorado River, landed in San Diego, August 23,7869. Bordering the line between

In 1881, Mr. Skidmore became associated with the J. M. Griffith Lumber Co. of Los Angeles. The company was organized as the Griffith-Lynch Lumber Co. but later Mr. Griffith took over the Lynch interests and in 1881 Mr. Skidmore was appointed manager of the company's yard at Downey. Since that time the J. M. Griffith Company sold out to the Griffith Lumber Company, and in l92I the yard at Downey was taken over by Mr. Skidmore and the late Mr. A. C. Bowers, under the firm name of Skidmore & Bowers Lumber Co., the name under which the yard now operates.

Mr. Skidmore is survived by his widow, Mrs. Eliza Skidmore, and one son, Grey M. Skidmore. Funeral services were held at 2:A0 P. M., Friday, May 12, at Downey and a large delegation of Southern California lumbermen were

in attendance.

from a l2-day business trip to the Northwest oh which he visited the company's mills at St. Helens, Port Ludlow and ?ort Gamble, the Seattle and Portland offices' and the mill of the St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co., Tacoma.

Mr. Atkinson was impressed with the optimism expressed by all the millmen he met. Without exception they reported having order files that will take care of output for the next 45 days, and that stocks are generally badly broken, many items being depleted. Price advances are expected in the near future, he said.

While in Tacoma he attended the weekly meeting of the Tacoma Lumbermen's Club as the guest of A. H. Landram, sales manager, St. Paul & Tacoma Lumber Co., and there also noted the opinion expressed by a number of lumbermen that the industry is on the. upgrade once again.

Appointed Secretary of Ventura ?^ Lounty LrrouP W. S. Elton has been appointed secretary of the Building Material Dealers' Club of Ventura County. Mr. Elton has been connected with association work in Southern California for a long period, and prior to his taking over his 'new position was secretary of the Inland Empire Institute at San Bernardino, Calif. The Ventura Club have their headquarters at Ventura, Calif.

Competition An act regulating competition in business, providing for the organization of trade associations as defined in the act, authorizing the Corporation Commissioner of the State of California to issue permits for the operation thereof, and defining and prohibiting destructive competition has been introduced in the State legislature by Representative Boyle. The bill is designated A. B. 2400.

The proposed bill is attracting the attention of many members of the lumber industry in the state. L. G. Sterett, secretary of the Millwork Institute of California, who is taking an active interest in the proposed bill, in expressing his views on the matter says: "I have discussed this proposed legislation with a number of my principals and they all feel that our industry should get behind this bill and insist upon its enactment.

The import of this whole movement, even now national in scope, is that the constructive efforts of our trade associations are at last being legally recognized as being in the interest of the public welfare as well as in the interest of our industry. When our industry is unable to enforce, apparently, universally practiced methods of fair competition, the public in the end is the one who suffers with our industry."

A. C. Horner Opens Office

A, C. Horner, consulting engineer, of San Francisco, who is devoting only part of his time to the work of representing the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, since their San Francisco ofEce was closed April 1, has opened an office at 901 Financial Center Building, San Francisco.

Mr. Horner is occupying the other portion of his time as consulting engineer for various grouPs of building material manufa,cturers, and is carrying on for them much the same kind of work he has done for the National in the last five years.

Eventually he expects to devote his full time to consulting engineering work, including standardization of building materials, decay and termite investigation, and representation of various groups in connection with legislative restrictions of building materials.

Due to his close association with lumber and wood products, Mr. Horner expects to be active prin'cipally in that field, and since the closing of the offices of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association he has been in Long Beach and Los Angeles almost constantly, keeping in touch with the numerous developments and proposed building code changes brought about as a result of the recent earthquake.

Lumber Exports Largest Sinc e1931 Washington, April 28.-Preliminary reports of United

States exports of softwood lumber and sawn timber during March. 1933. show for that month tl-re heaviest volume of any month in 1933 or 1932. These exports, according to U. S. Department of Commerce reports, totalled nearly 92,000,000 feet of which somewhat over 49,000.000 were shipped to the Orient and Near East, nearly 21,000,000 to Europe and 10,700,000 to Central America, Mexico and the West Indies.

March was the highest month in the last 15 for exports to the Orient and near East, and to the Central American

group, and the highest to Australasia except May, 1932.

The greatest de'clines, as compared with recent months, rvere in exports to Canada and to South America, which were reported as 446,000 and 4,754,Offi feet respectively in March.

Because of the low record of February, the first quarter

of 1933 does not 'compare so favorably rvith last year as does Mar'ch, although the softwood total of the quarter of more than 225,M,m feet was only 2 per cent below the

first quarter of 1932.

Hardwood lumber exports during the first three months of 1933 totalled more than 51,000,000 feet, according to these preliminary reports. This was 16 per cent under the volume of the first quarter of 1932 and below the second and fourth quarters.

Lumber imports during March, 1933, while heavier in volume than in February or January were under most months of. 1932. In March they totalled somewhat over 10,500,000 feet-and all from Canada, predominantly pine and spruce. Lumber imports totalled approximately 27,000,000 feet during the first quarter of 1933 as compared with 107,945,000 during the first quarter ol 1932 and 59,868,000 feet during the last quarter. Of the imports of the first three months of 1933, less than 2,000,000 were hardwoods and of the softwoods, nearly all were from Canada.

All-Lumber House for Chicago Exposition Chicago, Ill., April 2S.-Lumber will have first class visualized representation at the Century-of-Progress exposition of its merits as a residence building material.

The charming bungalow that is to carry lumber's colors at the exposition will be representative not only of lumber as a commodity in its various species and products, bFt as an industrial group. The cost of the house has been defrayed very largely by small contributions, mostly single dollar gifts from men, companies and groups in all departments of the industry.

Wilson Compton, President of American Forest Products Industries, and Manager of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, after conferring with the Executive Committee of the American Forest Products Industries here this week, made the definite announcement that ccinstruction will begin immediately. The architect's plans have been completed and approved, the money is on hand and materials and equipment, which have been given in lieu of money subscriptions,. are ready. The house is to be located on a favorable site overlooking Lake Michigan.

The lumber house is a one-story, five-room modern home in every respect. In design it is a charming com-modernbetween the advanced modern promise and the older American tradition of what a lumber built house should be.

To illustrate the representative nature of the cash subscriptions, it is worth mentioning that the Loyal Legion of Loggers and Lumbermen of the West Coast, with head: quarters at Portland, Oregon, contributed $5 subscribed in the form of 5 ,cents each from 100 members out of work.

Most of the subscriptions were for $1, but some firms gave up to $50 apiece, and one donation was for $1m0. Some lumber companies made subscriptions on the basis of $1 collected from each employe and officer. All branches of the lumber industry-manufacturing, wholesale, retail, individuals, companies and groups were represented. All contributions, whether collective or not, represented individual gifts, so that the thousand nomirial contributors represent really many thousands.
