Redwood Association \(/ill Hava Exhibit at San Diego Fair

Big Crowd Will Attend Golf Tournament May 17

Announcement is made by the California Redwood Association that they will have an exhibit at the San Diego Exposition.

The exhibit will be designed by Roland Irving Stringham, well known San Francisco architect. It will ,consist of a living room, pergola porch and garden. The building wiil also contain an office.

The Association hopes that lumber dealers visiting the Exposition will make this exhibit their headquarters.

The Exposition will be open to the publi'c May 29.

A big turnout is expected at the Southern California Lumbermen's Golf Tournament that will be held at the Brentwood Country Club, Brentwood Heights, Los Angeles, Friday afternoon, May 17. Dinner will be served in the Club House at 6:30 P.M. after which there will be a fine entertainment program and the winners of the various golf events will be awarded prizes. The tournament is sponsored by Lumbermen's Post, No. 403, American Legion.

A. P. YOST VISITS MILL A. P. Yost of the Holmes Eureka Lumber Co., Los Angeles, has returned from a several days' trip to the company's mill at Eureka. He reports that there is an acute shortage of Redw'ood dry upper grades at all the Redwood mills in Humboldt County.

Strike Closes Many Northwest Mills-Redwood Mills in Humboldt County Threatened With Strike-Mills Report Heavy Buying Practically all the Fir cargo mills in Oregon and Washington, with the exception of four or five mills, are dov,'n as a result of the s*ike called by the Sawmill and Timber Vorkers' [Jnion on May 6. The Fir plywood plants are all reported down, and a__sqike of the Shingle \(/orkers' [Jnion has closed practicdly

all shingle mills. The Fir rail mills have not been afiected to a y grez,t extent as yet but several mills are reported down. It is estimated that 31rO0O men are out on strike. A telegram from

San Francisco as we go to press states: ."Strike to take place May 15 afiecting four thousand work. ets in the Humboldt County Redwood industry was voted at Eureka, Friday, May 10, by one hundred members of the

Lumber and Sawmill Vorkerst Union local. The vote represented ninety-four lrer cent of the union membership. They demanded seventy-five cents per hour minimum wage, union recognition, and a thirty.hour week. They threatened to picket mills, Vednesday, May 15, if the demands are not granted.

The Redwood mills affected are the Ffammond Lumber Company, The Pacific Lumber Company, Dolbeer & Carson Lumber Co. and Holmes Eureka Lumber Co.tt The Deer Park Lumber Company, Deer Park, Vash., was the first mill east of the Cascades to be closed by a walkout of scikers, and is the only Pine mill operation reported to be shut down by the strike.

As the bulk of Fir lumber sold in California comes in by cargo, there was a great rush of buying preceding the strike. ff sellers could promise shipment, the stocks were grabbed up quickly by the retaiters. Fir cargo arrivals at California ports during the past few weeks have been heavy. California building activity has been showing steady improvement and mo.st of the tumber bought went out on jobs. As a result retail stocks are still low and if the strike lasts over a few weeks, there will be a shortage of many items of Fir lumber in many sections of the state. Commenting on the situation, a Southern California lum. t(The demand, especially from the outside yards lerman says: has been good, and the larger yards are also doing more'business. Cypress active and low grade package lumber getting scarce and price advancing. Shortage at mills of No. I and 2 white oak and red oak and with just a slight demand o,n the part of floo,ring manufacturers will make oak lumber a scarce commodity. Heavy rains and floods have sto,pped hardwood logging in Texas, Louisiana and Mississippi. Dealers in city districts are stocking up but most retail buying is for immediate jobs. A summary of matket conditions from the various lumbet manufacturing districts follow:

PINE-Stocks of Ponderosa Pine ate badly broken. Mills have more business on their books now than at any time since 1929, and are turning down ordets almost daily. Thete have ,been no increases in prices as yet but the general opinion of the mills is that increases of 11.00 per M on common and fl2.00 per M on selects and bettet are justified. It is a strong sellenst market and looks like being a strong market for the rest of the

Sugar Pine prices were increased May 10 en average of f,1.00 per M. Stocks are very low, and weather conditions have kept mills from stating up that ate usually in production at this

time of the year.

The Western Pine Association reported on May 10 that orders up to May 4 this year ate 25 per cent greater than for the corresponding period last year, and new business totaling 64r' for May' 849'000 feet or 60 per cent above the 3-yeat ^verage for the week ended May 4.

FIR-Only a few cargo mills were tunning May 13, and for such orders as they were accepting prices were $4.0O to f5.0O over those of two weeks ago.

Rail mills are swemped with business, a very large volume having been placed in the last two weeks. fncrease in prices averages 14.00 to f5.00. No. 3 Common is very scarce. No. 2 is scarce in desimble sizes.

All of the 17 Douglas Fir plywood plants in the Northwest were reported dovm May 11.

Vith many Red Cedar mills closed by the sttike, shingles have advanced forty to frf.ty cents per square.

REDV/OOD-Continued acrivity in the Redwood matket has resulted in considerable advance in Redwood prices and increases in wage rates at the Redwood sawmills. The most recent advances in Redwood prices average $5.00 per M on uppers and $1.00 to 12.00 per M on commons. Stocks are

very short at the mills and shippers ate finding great difficulty in filling orders. Most mills are still able to make shipments in 60 days from receipt

Loyalty Pledge In a 100 per cent pledge of loyalty signed May 11 by every man employed in the mill, with from one to 50 years' service, employees of the Dolbeer & Carson Lumber Company, Eureka, stated that "we have always received the

greatest consideration from our president and friend, Mr. J. M. Carson, and do not need a union or any other organization to make demands for us." They also said that "we are fairly treated and have no complaints or grievances."

The pledge was ttnsolicited by either Mr. Carson or his head officials, P. J. Rutledge and E. J. Stewart, and was in answer to the Union announcement that all mills would close May 15 as a result of the strike called by the Sau'mill & Timber Workers local union.

Long-Bell Men Vote to Strike Announcement was made by the Sawmill & Timber Workers local at Longview, Wash., May 11 that 2100 men had voted 8 to 1 against the so-called "compromise agreement."

It was stated that 90 per 'cent of the loggers and 8O per cent of the sawmill hands voted to strike, and that the Long-Bell mill would be picketed at 10 a.m. May 12.

The terms of the agreement were reported to be a blanket 5 cents an hour wage rise, recognition of the union, but no closed shop, and stepped up rate for overtime.

By Jack Dionne Tacked on the wall of a pro golf shop in Philadelphia, they say, is the following little poem: "It ain't the screamin' tee shot Nor the pitches free from blame, It's the everlastin' sinkin' Of the putts that wins the game."

And, we might truthfully add, "Life's like that," in other games besides golf.

*,** A great section of the United States has been plagued during the past several months with a terrible afflictiondust storms. And, as always in such cases, we are told that they never happened before, but are some new visitation from the regions of the damned.

Others, and they r"*L"]o"lt"r,tr,, in the Law of Compensation, declare with awed voices that Providence is paying foolish humans for our acts of the past two years in destroying and aborting food crops. Astounding how many thoughtful people utter that thought. rg:t*

As a matter of fact, while these dust storms of recent months appear to be of greater intensity and affecting greater areas-and perhaps different areas-than those of the past, historians tell us that they are NOT new. A writer in the Kansas City Star of April 21, L935, tells a very interesting story of the terrible plague of dust storms in that country that happened forty years ago.

I traded my 160 acre homestead for this cow, and I played a dirty trick on the man I traded with.' 'flow was that?' 'I rung in another 160 acres on him that he didn't know nothing about."'

He tells of seeing a town of 5,000 people reduced, to practically a hand full of brave believers by the sand storms of forty years ago, and later come right back and grow to several times their former size and population, when the dust storms were forgotten.

* * * He tells of the last remaining man in one town in Western Kansas, who refused to leave. He just sat there on the porch of an abandoned hotel, and looked out into the scorching country, and often remarked: "Yes, it looks like rain, But it won't rain. The rain has gone dry out here. They say it rained in Hutchinson. Maybe so-but I doubt it.

There is no God west of Newton. He dried up in '90." **{<

That man stayed there winter and summer through the dust and the drouth. And one day it started to rain. And to a passer-by he cried-"God has moved the rain belt West." And he went into the house and watched it rain steadily for five days and nights. And at the end of that time they found him dead, and in his face there was a look of enormous happiness. The rain had come at last. t<**

He says that at tt tirJ" Jn" l""nr" in Western Kansas "t were sayihg: "This is the great American desert; let's give the land back to the fndians. And," says this writer, "just a few weeks ago I heard a farrner in that same territory saying about the same thing. He said: 'This is not a farming country; let's put it back in Buffalo grass and pasture it with cattle.' And he was digging the sand out of his eyes and mouth just as that predecessor of his did forty years ago." d<**

This writer says: "f saw all of Western Kansas settled up by homesteaders from the East, and later, after a series of years, f saw every road that led Eastward out of Kansas choked with those same homesteaders trekking back to the East again, deserting Kansas in disgust. It's the old story about the farmer and his family and their covered wagon,

A lot of folks are going to feel that same way some of these days when we discover that the depression is finally gone. Only I don't think it will kill anybody. Those who have fought their way through the past five or six years will be too tough to be killed that way, and too busy rebuilding their fences and their fortunes.

*** And won't it be a grand and glorious feeling, sho nuff?

The great State of California will resume her magnificent march toward world grandeur that was disturbed and detoured by the old smash and crash that men call "depression." Away back in 1922 newspapers of California printed in big type my prediction that California would within a reasonable number of years have a, population of fifteen million happy and prosperous people. She WILL have.

All of those blessings that brought fame to California are still here. The panic and depression has neither erased nor dimmed them. I shall never forget walking down Hollywood Boulevard one sunny winter day about ten years ago, and meeting unexpectedly a friend of mine from the East, a gray haired man of large means who spent a great part of his life wandering all over the civilized and uncivilized world. t<*+ And he turned loose on me a perfect eruption of enthusiastic eulogy for California. "For forty years," he said, "I have roamed the world looking for wonderful and interesting places. And at the end of these years I come to California for the first time, and what do I discover? Here in one spot I find everything of beauty and loveliness that I have found in all the other gaiden spots of the earth put together, and a lot more thrown in. Yes sir, I've wasted forty years of my life, for all that I've been seeking all over the world in all that time has been right here waiting for me, and I waited for my old age to find it out."

And what that man ,"rO *ell be utilized as a truth"""rU ful description of what California has to offer the world.

Everything that you can find anywhere else, you can find here, and a lot of extras thrown in. Which is why I have never doubted that California will keep marching on. People will continue to come here, and a large proportion of them who can possibly do so, will remain.

And they will build n"-"r.-O* the lumber folks of Cahfornia will sell those homes. Business will bloom and boom again. The faces of the people of California w:ll reflect the glory of the sunshine of California. And there will come into being a solid civilization stretching from San Diego, where the warm waters of the South lap the friendly sands, to Shasta on the North; and then some. Finding here their hearts' sincere desire; finding here a variety of climates and conditions to suit the likes and loves of every man and woman; they will settle down to live as they have never lived before.

*** No, nothing, not even a six year depression, can interfere seriously with the fulfillment of the destiny of the Golden State of California. Did I say Golden State? Pardon my Southern accent. It was my error. Having explained by the spoken and written word full many a time that the forests of California have produced more wealth than the mines of

California, and the mines are practically gone while the forests are practically untouched-which makes California something more than a Golden State-I must retract the world Golden, and search for a substitute word that will glorify the California forests. But we'll talk about that later on.

California has more *"rdt, timber within ""mmercial her borders today than any other state in the union except Oregon. And those great forests will add to her prosperity and her riches for generations to come. Millions of additional citizens will require hundreds of thousands of additional homes, and garages, and tens of thousands of additional buildings of every sort that naturally follow the influx of people. The good old days of the early 20's will come back, and they will stay a long, long time.

Once again, as in o"r" r, ,iru, an" California lumber market will be sought after by all those producers of material who can profitably reach it. Lumber figures will run high. Building statistics will tower. And the birds will sing in the tree-tops and all nature will join the citizens of California in rejoicing that depression has gone-forever, we hope-and abiding prosperity has returned.

San Diego High Pupils Select Redwood

for National Tree San Diego High School students chose California Redrvood for the national tree of the United States in a recent poll conducted by Scripps-Howard newspapers throughout the country.

Results of the vote will be tabulated and presented to Washington officials with the request that a national tree be

officially designated.

been more essential that facts be relied upon instead of opinions and guesses, nor when facts are harder to get. I have felt that the task of marshalling these facts for consideration by the industry should wait until some of the present entanglements have been straightened out."

Mr. Compton directed attention to three major objectives : (1) Completion of the reconstitution of the Association as a federation of the regional bodies; (2) preparation for engaging in a more extended program of lumber promotion; (3) legislation and Governmental policy. Adding remarks as to the need for ,close attention to Governmental measures, he mentioned a few of the re,cent activities of the Association in Washington and commented on certain pending legislation such as Title II of the Banking Bill, which he said would be more accurately described as a bill to impose state socialisrn on the United States.

Dr. Compton expressed his appreciation of Mr. Sheppard's leadership of the industry during the last two years.

The work of the trade promotion department was reviewed to an intensely interested audience by its manager, Arthur T. Upson.

Retailers' President Presents Their Viewpoint The vital need of greater 'cooperative effort by lumber manufacturers in all species was strongly pressed by George La Pointe, president of the National Retail Lumber Dealers Association, who said that although his retail firm had an exceptional record of loyalty to lumber, less than 3O% of. its business is represented by lumber products.

"Ther,e was a time," he said, "when we refused to stock lumber substitutes, but we could not afford to continue that policy. Manufacturers of other building materials pushed the sale of their products throtrgh the dealer so aggressively we had to stock them in justi,ce to ourselves.

In view of that kind of competition, I do not see how lum-

ber manufacturers can hope to hold their markets without similar effort."

Dealing with the subject, "The Lumber Industry's Chance Under the Federal Housing Act," J. Howard Ardrey, Deputy Administrator, Federal Housing Administration. said that modernization loans under the terms of the Act are now being made at a rate of $650,000 a day, with at least that mu,ch more going into modernizing projects through other loan channels. Reviewing that and the new constru'ction phases of the Better Housing Program, promoted by the Housing Administration, Mr. Ardrey challenged the lumbermen to "sell the market the Act is creating for you."

"First", he said, "learn all about the Act, then help popularize it. Utilize the for,ces working in your behalf.

No sounder piece of legislation has ever been enacted, and it is being sanely and wisely adminisiered by business men' not politicians. I commend to you a thorough inquiry into the A,ct's provision for bettering your business, and to the volume of business it is already delivering at your door."

Under Title II, that part of the Act providing insured mortgages for new building, the lender has the advantage of the Administration's property appraisal to supplement his own judgment of the soundness of a loan, Mr. Ardrey pointed out. In addition, he said, "the lender knows he will never have to own the property, for should the borrower default the lender has a way of getting rid of the property by accepting debentures. The borrower also ha,s the benefit of the government's property appraisal and so knows he is not being gypped in the pri'ce. Moreover, he escapes the old-fashioned first and second and sometimes third mortgage system, with its expensive refunding every three to five years. Here are some of the best ones that have gone the rounds:

Makes lmprovements Since ,completing rebuilding their plant in September, 1933 following its destruction by fire, Forsyth Hardwood Company, San Francisco, have kept on making improvements, until it is one of the most modern to be found in the country. The whole yard is clouble decked and under cover. A11 gangr.vays are asphalted.

They have recently finished construction of a new panel and flooring shed, giving them an additional capacity of 10,000 square feet of these items. They have also extended their loading platform at the rear of the yard to a length of 2@ feet, accommodating four freight cars.

They carry a total stock of assorted hardq7666. and panels , ri of about one million feet.

P. R. "Bob" Kahn, general manager, is optimistic. He states that they have bought heavily in hardwoods in expe'ctation of increased business in the near future.

"Our recent plant expenditure in plant improvements and heavy pur:chases are an expression of our faith in the future," he says.

The company has a definite dealer policy, selling only through legitimate channels. It has always been their policy not to sell direct to the contractor.

Carl Watts, well known hardwood salesman, is their sales representative who ,calls on the trade in the Northern California territory.

The Forsyth Hardwood Company's plant is located at 355 Bayshore Boulevard, San Francisco.

Fire Season Opens on National Forests Travelers in the national forests of California will have

shovels right now if they are going to make a trip into the southern California mountains, according to an order just issued by the U. S. Regional Forester, San Francis.co.

On May 1 the regulation requiring all automobile camping parties to carry the specified shovel and ax went into efiect on the Angeles and San Bernardino National Forests, and ,camp fire permits will be necessary. In addition, these forests are ,closed to smoking except in ,camps, at places of habitation and in special posted areas. On May 15 these regulations will be in effect on the Cleveland Forest and on June I on the Santa Barbara Forest. The dis,charge of fireworks is prohibited at the same time as other protective regulations are in force.

In the national forests of northern California the shovel and ax, smoking, camp fire permit, and fireworks regulations are effective June 1, with some exceptions.

Certain areas on the Modoc, Cleveland and San Bernardino are 'closed to public use on account of high fire hazards, and those entering any national forest are advised to obtain camping information from forest ranger stations. Forest Service offi,cials state that the dates these regulations are made effective are those of an average year, showing that what seemed to be a wet winter and spring was only the normal precipitation in most parts of the State.

Deafers Make Good Use of Vacation Home Pfans The need for such a publi.cation as the folder ,.Redwood Vacation Homes", ,containing 22 plans, recently issued by the California Redwood Association, has been amply demonstrated by the enthusiastic demand for the publication from dealers all over California and from some in other states.

The father of the idea for this folder is J. W. Williams, secretary of the Association. When asked recently about the reaction of the dealers to the sample copy sent to them,

Mr. Williams referred a representative of The California Lumber Merchant to a file of letters ordering a supply of the folders. Hemmings Representing Swayne Lumber Company The Swayne Lumber Company of Oroville, Calif., manufacturers of Sugar Pine, Ponderosa Pine, Douglas Fir, White Fir and fn,cense Cedar, are now in their twenty-fifth year of operation. Chas. Schleef is manager of their mill operations and Walter S. Kennon, sales manager.

About 45 to 50 per aent of the e.ntire cut is Sugar Pine, 25 per cent mixed Douglas Fir, White Fir and Incense Cedar, and the tralan,ce Ponderosa Pine. In the pre-code days, the normal annual production was around 30 to 35 million feet, while under the ,code the production is about 20 to 2l million feet for all species. The ,company has all modern manufacturing facilities including dry kilns, box factory, moulding department, etc. Sugar Pine can be furnished both thoroughly air dried or kiln dried. While their Ponderosa Pine is usually all kiln dried, the 4/4 stock during the summer months is thoroughly air dried.

FHA Reports Increased Demands for Lumber From All Sections The National Lirmber Manufacturer's Asso,ciation in a recent bulletin confirmed the generally accepted belief of lumber dealers that the industry is rapidly leaving dull days behind with a statement that the first three months and a half of 1935 showed orders 18 per cent above the total business done in the corresponding period ol 1934.

When this organization makes an official pronouncement it ,cannot be discounted as sheer optimism, and now it has announced in so many words that the lumbermen are in step with the general building recovery movement.

Fuel to keep the fire of demand glowing over the next several months will come, in a large measure, from the demands of new residential construction which in March reached a peak higher than it had for any single month in the past four years. And this total of construction was contributed to by every section of the countr;r.

Not only did new building make strong advances, but repairs and modernization rryork kept pace.

Examples of accelerated demand for lumber are at hand from every section, but for illustrative purposes the statement from the Redwood Manufacturing Company, Pittsburg, California, may be more for'ceful to Pacific Coast dealers and is therefore ,cited first :

Three car loads of redwood "uppers", used for high grade 6.nishing, have been booked, company officials state.

However, due to inactivity and lack of demand they had to shop the order, as they didn't have that much of the ma-

terial in their own yards.

The J. Knox Corbett Lumber Co., Tucson, Ariz., reported on April 20 that it had obtained and completed 95 modernization credit extensions for clients in three weeks time. This meant 95 cash jobs for the aggressive firm.

A Decorah. Iowa. lumber merchant announced that since his town had initiated a better housing movement he has shipped in three ,carloads of lumber. This figure is greater than his entire 1934 consumption and represents the most activity he has experienced in a single month since 1929.

Yard owners in the past have not gone in for salesmanship to any great degree. They have kept their stocks up, advertised from time to time and called on the builders and contractors.

Now, however, salesmanship has entered the retail lumber business, and methods have been revised. A number of concerns have grasped the Modernization Credit Plan of the Federal Housing Administration as a sales weapon.

They have set up an information department in the selling organization and have shown people hor,r' to utilize the National Housing Act to advantage. The reward of this has been lumber sales that by no stretch of the imagination rvould have come in of their own accord.

Dealers have four.rd out that the National Housing Act was not for property owners alone. It was just as much for the dealer, with lumber well to the fore, as for any other group.

Right here on the Coast, at San Diego, is a fine example of the awakened interest in better homes and better living.

The exposition offers striking examples of what a home can be made to mean. It will prove a fine stimulus for housing in this section, and the demands it generates will be for the better 'class of materials.

All of the influence of the Federal Housing Administration has been against the employment of inferior materials.

Further, if a home is to be financed with the aid of an insured mortgage, it must be properly designed, and properly built of good materials.

This means a quality market and a demand for the better grades of lumber.

With the increasingly prominent part the National Housing Act is playing in the recovery of the building industry, it behooves the lumberman, no nlatter what his capacity in the industry, to familiarize thoroughly himself with the act.

By so doing he can obtain for himself the maximum of benefit and give, in turn, the utmost in assistan,ce to ,customers.

A letter or ,card to the Federal Housing Administration at Washington, D. C., or to any of its state officers, will procure the desired information at no cost.

son, who has actively headed up the PioneerFlintkote Company as its Vice-President and General Manager since May, 1934, was born in Vincennes, Indiana, and attended the University of Illinois.

In his early business experience his inclination was always toward sales, and he has

continued to devote the major part of his

time to distribution

problems. In this work

he has been in close contact with dealers, L. M.."Lou" Simpson

jobbers, contractors, and large industrial

concerns in all sections

of the United States, working with them to aid in their rnerchandising problems.

For many years he directed the national sales activities of one of the largest manufacturing concerns in the country, organized its branch offi,ces and was very 'close to its production problems, and in that capacity was active in nratters pertaining to research, development and constant improvement of product quality and design.

Mr. Simpson's wide experience from a national viewpoint and his familiarity with the Pacific Coast territory positions him to be most thoroughly alert to the problems of lumber dealers and to the development of the distribution policies of Pioneer-Flintkote in a way to best give them the fullest measure of cooperation. ln 1917, Mr. Simpson married the attractive Miss Elsie l,orene Bru.ce of Kansas City, Missouri, and their lovely daughter is Miss Mary Lou Simpson. Just recently the Simpsons completed a fine new home in the beautiful Holmby Hills at Los Angeles.

"Lou" is most delighted to again be living in Southern California. His favorite hobby or recreation is golf, and he plays a good game-sdnetimes.

"lnteresting Small Hotet" Washington, D. C., M"y 1.-n'Interesting Small Homes" is the title of a timely booklet just issued by the National Lumber Manufacturers Association and affiliated or cooperating associations as a part of their service to distributors and consumers of lumber. The booklet contains four pages of informative text and announcements, 37 line drawings of small houses, together with floor plans.

These houses were selected from plans drawn by the American Home Magazine, the Architect's Small House Service Bureau, the Subsistence l{omestead Division of the Department of the fnterior, and the National Plan Service.

Most of the houses shown will not ,cost more than $3500 to build and only a few of them will cost as much as $5,000. The houses illustrated in the booklet are all of popular American types and particularly designed for wood construction.

Actual working drawings for any of the houses illustrated in the booklet are available to home builders upon payment of a small fee.

The physical make-up of the booklet is such that the printed matter on the inside of the back cover can be removed and replaced by an association or an individual lumber manufacturer or dealer with a special presentation, if desired, of particular species of lumber and other products. The booklet is supplied to manufacturers or retailers of lumber in quantlty lots of 1,000 or more at an actual printing cost of 10 cents each, whi'ch includes the qubstitution of the individual manufacturer or dealer's particular text.

Jones Hardwood Company displayed various hardwoods and hardwood panels. One wall of their booth was paneled in Douglas Fir slash grain plywood using "Buffco Trim."

Many Interesting Exhibits at S. F. B-uilding Exposition Many and varied were the exhibits of building materials and equipment at the first annual Building Exposition held under the auspices of the San Francisco Builders' Exchange at'the Civic Auditorium, San Francisco, May 4 to 12.

The Exposition was conceived to stimulate publi'c intereSt in building and .the building industry iir coopera' tion with the Federal Housing Administration. . Among the exhibits particularly interesting to lumbermen were the following: The fine exhibit of Redwood by the California Redwood Association was an outstanding one, and especially so as none of the other softwood associations rvas represented by an exhibit. It was made up of eight units, four of which were design'ea io be demountable so that they can be used for individual displays by lumber dealers. Ttre units showed Redwood Anzac Sid.ing, Redwood for the Garden, Redwood Shingles, and "Redwood to the First Floor."

I The other units displayed four beautiful Redwood wall pinels.

Wheeler Osgood Sales Corporation had an attractive exhibit with an artistic back drop made of Philippine Mahogany plywood in dark and light red. The main pur"architects and conpose of the display was to acquaint tractors with Laminex "Plyform" for con'crete forms.'.''

A number of fancy hardwood panels in Walnut, Maple and Philippine Mahogany were also shown.

Van Arsdale Harris Lumber Company's exhibit consisted of a two-r,oom building constrttcted to show the possibilities of Nu-Wood Plank and Tile and Baisam Wool ior interior finish, insulation and acoustical uses. NuWood interior finish gained favorable comment by reason of its beauty of color,and texture.

Maris Plywood Company's display was made up of hardlrjood and'"'I{arbord". Douglas Fir panels. A feature of their exhibit was a set of pictures showing the use of Douglas Fir plywoodi for concrete forms on the Golden

Sudden Lumber Company exhibited lumber, millwork and roofing products.

Mallott & Peterson featured a fine display of PioneerFlintkote Company's roofing products.

W:th the Retailers G. W. Maddox, former Los Angeles retailer, has bought the Geib Lumber Co. yard at San Gabriel.

The Associate Lumber Co. has opened a yard at 59th Street and Central Ave., Los Angeles.

The Graham-Weir Lumber Co. recently started operating a yard at 5511 Whittier Blvd., Los Angeles.

Earl C. Hughes has pur,chased the yard formerly operated by Roper & Dabadie Lumber Co., Santa Cruz, and will shortly organize the Hughes Lumber Company.

Third Annual Reveille Great Succcss The Third Annual Reveille of Central and Northern California lumbermen, held at Hotel Oakland, Friday evening, April 26, was a very pleasant affair from every standpoint. More than 300 attended the dinner and entertainment.

Larue Woodson, chairman of the general committee welcomed the big gathering and thanked the lumber trade papers for their cooperation.

G. F. "Jerry" Bonnington, president of East Bay Hoo Hoo Club No. 39, under whose auspices the Reveille is held annually, thanked the wholesalers and manufacturers' representatives for their coo'peration in making possible the entertainment and golf tournament.

Bert Bryan, chairman of the entertainment committee, expressed his appre,ciation to the sponsors for their spontaneous cooperation Edwin fmhaus, nationally known radio tenor was guest artist, headed the entertainment program.

Joseph L. Bobba was master of ceremonies. Mildred Baldwin, coloratura soprano, was featured. Edwin Imhaus and Fred Klein sang a duet. Then followed the variety numbers, entitled on the program "Lumbermen's Follies of r.935."

The golf tournament was held on Saturday morning, April2Tth, at the Oak Knoll Country Club. Lumber Plays Major Part in Exposition Construction San Diego, May S.-Lumber of sufficient quantity to fill seven vessels of 1,250,000 feet capacity each already has been used in construction operations at the California Pacific International Exposition, according to figures compiled by the fair's Department of Works.

According to officials, this means that more lumber has been used at the Exposition than in any other area of corresponding size in California in the last five years.

The majority of the lumber used is Oregon pine, but it is pointed out that Cali{ornia redwood is used ex.clusively in all ground material.

In the Palace of Electricity and Varied Industries at the Exposition approximately 60,000 square feet of lumber has been used to make the only all-wood floor to be found in major structures at the fair.

Four major Exposition structures which are made entirely of wood, plaster and stucco, roofs all sheeted with lumber, are the Palaces of Education, and Electricity and Varied Industries. California State building and the Palace of Travel, Transportation and Water.

At the Amusement Zone and in the Spanish Village approximately 1,708;000 feet of lumber, not included in Exposition estimates, also has been utilized in ,construction of 17 buildings on the Midway and for interior decoration in village structures.

No estimate was available of the am,ount of lumber used in the construction of 42 wooden buildings in the Gold Gulch area of the Exposition where Days of '49 exhibits

will be housed.

Timbers i6 by 18 inches were the main cords used in truss 64 feet long on the Palace of Foods and Beverages.

The 25 cities reporting largest volume of building permits in April ieported a volume ql #.2,999-,V$.o<iffffiea with $8,612,163 in March and $3,645,707 in April,1934. Permits in April, 1935, were the largest recorded from normal building activity in the past two and one-half years. This is the fifthconse,cutive month of increases reported over preceding month and corresponding month last year.

Los Angeles with a large increase, largely representep by ,construction of a new terminal building, led the 'coastdl cities again. It was followed by San Diego in second place. Building activity in this city developed to a considerable degree by the construction of the 'World's Fair.

San Francisco followed in third place, with, tqng Beach, Pasadena, Fresno, Oakland, Portland, Seattle and San Marino ranking next in ,conse,cutive order.

In,creases were reported by the following cities in April over both the preceding month and corresponding month last year: Los Angeles, San Diego, Long Beach, Pas{r dena, Fresno, Portland, Ore., San Marino, Van'couver, B.
