Penalty of Leadership

To mediocrity, genius is unforgiveable.

That is true in every field of human endeavor.

He that is first must live in the white light of publicity from the moment his leadership is discovered.

Whether that leadership is vested in an institution or a product, the shafts of malice, of envy, of ignorance, of the

world-old antipathy of the weak for the strong, are ever at work.

There is both penalty and reward for leadership. The reward is wide-spread recognition from those who think straight. The punishment is fierce and malignant detraction and denial, and oft-times even persecution from those who do not.

As they say in the street, success is never all gravy.

"It is of eloquence as of a fame; it requires matter to feed it, motion to excite it, and*it brightens as it burns."-Tacitus.

Thus did Tacitus, one of the great names in the history of Greek philosophers, d*escribe what is called oratory.

The pages of literature from the beginning of history are freely illuminated with words of patriotic fervor that have been uttered by innumerable men who have sent their fine thoughts echoing down the corridors of time, to stir the blood of posterity. * * *

America has contributed liberally to the patriotic lists of inspired speakers, who have given mankind thoughts couched in masterful words. Starting, perhaps, with Patrick Henry and his "Give me liberty or give me death," volumes have been written about our great American orators.

Of course Lincoln's Gettysburg Address "leads all the rest" in showing what can be done with simple words when played and uttered b5r a master. *

Thinking men swell with pride at the knowledge that there lives today in England one of the greatest orators of all time, the mighty Churchill.

The United States today is not blessed with many men of great patriotic eloquence. General Douglas MacArthur would probably draw a preponderance of votes if we were to elect our present best orator. Many of his public utterances rank with the finest in* our history.

Time was when almost every district in this country had men with silver tongues. Orators seem to come in groups. Daniel Webster was one of the mpst eloquent orators in our history. But in his own time there were many other men who could bring audiences to their feet by the great power of their words. Webster had to meet such men as Clay, Calhoun, and others as*oratorical rivals.

It would require pages to even try to list the names of really great orators this country has known in its time. Every American state has had citizens to whom it can point with pride as examples oj fin*e public speakers.

In the early days of world history, there were three men whose names became immortal, Demosthenes, Pericles, and Cicero, the first two Greek, the third Roman. Pericles it was who prayed to the gods before each public utterance tfiat he might "misuse no word and use no unnecessary word." Demosthenes was ttre thrilling, flag-waving type, such as was illustrated by William Jennings Bryan in this country. ***

The most thrilling public speaker this writer ever heard was a Texas Senator, the late Joseph Weldon Bailey. He was of the Periclean type of speakers, making every word count, and he grew more slow and deliberate as his force mounted. As an example of his oratory, we shall guote from a speech on patriotism that he once made to a convention of fumbermen. He said that he agreed with Lincoln that all the arnries of Europe could not by force set foot in the Adirondacks or drink from ttre waters of the Ohio, but, and herd we quote Bailey: * *

"If this nation ever dies, it will die from within and not from without. And I warn you that if this nation ever dies, there will be no resurrection morn; there will be no guardian angel to roll away the rock from our sepulchre door; there will be no Easter Morn for this republic." And in this fashion Joe Bailey "O*oO"*"r one having authority.

Of all the innumerable orators that he has heard. this writer names Joe Bailey as best, and General MacArthur as next. Bryan can not compare with these two.

Northern California Convention Emphasizes Serious Problems Facing Industry

Members Discuss Chonges fo Come, Problems ond Sofulions fo Question, "Where Do We Go From Here?" - Bonker Sfqfes f hal Overall Consfruction WiIf fncrecrse But Housing Affected by High Cosfs - Elmer Rou Becomes New President

((rTrHE MERCHANDISER will live, but be prepared for I many changes to come in lumber retailing during the '60's," spoke Jack Pfeifier, of the San Francisco consulting firm of McKinsey & Company, to a big turnout of northern California dealers attending the final session of LMA's 21st Annual Convention wl-rich ran April 16-18. at the Ahwahnee Hotel in beautiful Yosemite Natlonal Paik.

Although most modern dealers are more than aware that the industry stands today on the brink of a period of radical change, Pfeiffer and the speakers who preceded him, brought out many answers to the perplexing problem of "where do we go from here ?"

The 21st Annual LMA Convention also saw the retirement of the Association's hard working president for the past two years, Frank Heard, Motroni-Heard Lumber Company, who leaves the association after serving as an outstanding leader through a period that saw the NRLDA Exposition come West to San Francisco for the first time, LMA acting as the regional host association. Heard is succeeded by Madera dealer and former vice-president, Elmer Rau, Madera Lumber & Hardware. Long active in association affairs, Rau will be assisted by incoming vicepresident Clair Hicks, president of Hicks Lumber Company, fnc., Salinas. Re-elected (and quite unanimously and enthusiastically) were the Association's treasurer, Ira llorton, South City Lumber & Supply, and executive vicepresident Jack Pomeroy, who was respollsible for the excellent convention program.

Although the business sessions opened on Mor-rday morn-

ing, the convention officially got under way Sunday with the Annual LMA Golf Tournament at the Wawona Golf Course, Wendell Scott, Progress Lumber Company, officially directing the action in the golf department. With the LMA Perpetual Trophy at stake, Oakland wholesaler Brian Bonnington put on the steam to win not only the Perpetual Trophy, but the low gross trophy as well.

Frank Heard Opens Monday's Session

Frank Heard, presiding over the first business sessioll, officially opened the meeting, introducing the first panel in the Indian Room at 10:00 a.m. Speakers on the morning panel were: C. E. McCarthy, Vice-president, Real Estate Loan Development, Bank of America, San Francisco; Eric Beckstrom, Arcadia Lumber Company, Arcadia; and Allan Voorsanger and Ken Brown, Remington Rand Univac, San Francisco.

In the lead-off spot, McCarthy told the group of industry businessmen he felt that future residential building will rely more on consumer demand rather than the availability of mortgage funds-which McCarthy termed "plentiful" at this time. "Minimum shelter housing needs have been met," he said, "but granted, we would all like to see the quality of much of this housing improved."

Commenting that he definitely felt the recessioll was "flattening out" and the economy on the move once again, McCarthy was optimistic about the overall construction picture, noting that construction other than residential building is expected to hit 36 billion dollars for 1961, up 4 billion dollars over last year.

Centering his attention on the California picture, McCarthy noted that soaring land values have placed new homes out of reach for many people. "The biggest single factor affecting the home market in this state right now is the price of the house in relation to a person's income," he said.

On the plus side of the California picture, McCarthy noted that the population of California is being swelled by an estimated 300,000 persons each year-meaning the construction of 100,000 new housing units must be built each year to house these people. But at the same time, he pointed out, jobs must be created for these people, and in the face of increasing automation, this may well become a crisis affecting the housing industry in the State.

Out of California's present annual production of approximately 200,000 new homes, the Bank of America estimates that there are 7,500 unsold units in northern California18,500 units unsold in southern California, McCarthy told the group. However, neither this figure, nor the present foreclosure figures (only slightly .tp) cause any degree of alarm in financial quarters, he said.

Corrcluding his outlook Lor 7961-62, McCarthy said that he felt: 1. Mortgage funds would continue to become more and more plentiful; 2. Residential building would continue to rely more on consumer demand; 3. Government would become more active in the picture (a feature the S.F. banker was not happy about, President Kennedy's Omnibus Housing bill in particular) and 4. Interest rates will quite probably decline somewhat during the year.

Eric Beckstrom, the second speaker on the morning panel, then took the rostrum, "How to Inspire Your Employees to Sell" his topic. Beckstrom, in charge of store sales and advertising for Arcadia Lumber, placed special emphasis on Advertising, Display, Proper Merchandise, Proper Pricing, and Credit and Collections.

On the subject of Advertising, Beckstrom urged dealers to strive to reach a larger audience with their advertising message, rather than to heavily concentrate their spreads to a small or local group of customers.

Placing special emphasis on keeping up a consistent campaign, Beckstrom also urged dealers to incorporate the "unique selling proposition" in their advertising messages.

Offer a specific product that you know is of interest to your audience, and above all, avoid "Vampire Claims" in

your advertising (too many claims about a product will confuse the reader) and "Vampire Video" (a beautiful scantily clad gal wiil give your riader the "messags"-fs1 brother, that's not the "message" you're trying to get over, is it?)

Turning to merchandising and displEy, Beckstrom noted that merchandise moves best when attractively packaged and displayed in a manner in which it is meant to be ultimately used, at least where possible.

"Along with merchandising, train your salesmen to Listen to the customer," Beckstrom stressed. "\Ve estimate that 68/o of lost sales are due to indifference on the part of the salesman. So get out of the bidding class and give your customers personal selling. Sell from the heart rather than the mind. Train your men to Listen-and then be able to come up with the consumer-oriented information necessary to sell the product. Most important, make sure your men are able to help the customer make up his mind and close the deal. Far too many times a salesman will complete all the other steps faultlessly-only to lose the sale because he left the closing up to the customer," Beckstrom noted.

Ld Fountairr Lun.rber Company (wholesale lumber distributor an<l marlrlfacturer of Lam-Loc Timbers and Lam-Loc Pecky Cedar) has announcecl the completion of a new timber laminating facility u'hich has reclirced productior.r time ancl procluct handling to tl.re point where timber prices are being lowerecl as much as 25/r on several slzes.

Described as "perpetual processing" by Forrntain. the new line utilizes several lrerv pieces of ecluipnrerrt ancl new handling techniques cleveloped by the Company since tl.re fire. A rlew semi-atltonlatic scarfing machine, built to Fountain specificatiolls, clamps the lrrn-rber in place, a<1vances it to tl-re saws. automaticallv crlts one side of tl-re scarf, marks it for accrtrate assenl6ly ancl cuts the otl.rer side of tlie scarf on the return cycle. Tl.re new 1 5f" larnittations are produced in less than half the 1>rer.ir-rrrs time.

,As the lrrrnber leaves the scarling nracl'rine, it feeds into a stagirrg area u'here the laminatiorrs are sorted for tl-re various sizes of tirnbers. The next step is f eeding the laminatiolrs tl'rrough the automatic glue spreaders tvl.rere eitl-rer casein or resorcinol glue is rlsed depencling on rvhether the tirr.rber is for irrterior or exterior apl)licatio11.

From this point, the lumber is placed it-r the laminating presses rvhere 150 ponnds per square incl.r of uniform

h1'drarrlic pressure is applied. At this and each stage of procluction. a cluality control inspector checks the product for uniforrnity ancl workmanship. After the laminations are clamped, r-reu'ly installed "heat hocicls" are lowered over the presses. This speecls glue setting and guarantees colttinuous contact of all members rrntil thev are one rigid timber. Fountain makes only straight or cambered timbers. 'flie comltany has capacity to make one contintrous timber 270'\ong.

Another time saving piece of erluipment recently pr.rrcl.rased by Fountain is a mrrltiple clirection lift truck which is use<l for removing timbers irorn the larninating presses. Only the seconcl one in use, this truck is highll- rnaireuverable ancl can easily hanclle tinrbers in cor-rfir'red areas and is usecl to place them in the planer for tl.re clean-trp olteration. Hanclling time on this phase is cnt irr half. The planer is everr eclnippecl witir floating hea<ls so tl-re edges of the tirnbers are autontatically cleanecl of excess glue as tl.rey are being plar-recl.

Firral phase of tl're operation is sanding and finishing according to tl-re cnstomers' desires. Ser-eral nen' pieces of equipment are also contributing to reduce time irr this part of the operation. STATE from a Small BOX

to a Giant Complex

A BRUCE WALTON is a name

.Cl.. well known in the Western Lumber Industry. Within the short span of just two decades, two A. B. Waltons, Senior and Junior, have built a thriving complex of nine corporations making up the State Box Company group.

America was still writhing in the throes of the depression in 1937 when A. B. Walton, Senior, had the courage to risk his meager capital on a dream. ft was in that year he pulled out from the security of a job with the Setzer Box Company to found his own boxshook manufacturing plant.

State Box Company was born that year on Walton capital and a small amount of monev borrowed from a few trusting friends. The plant was small at the beginning, but the Senior Walton had literally grown up in the lumber industry, and he knew how to make a little go a long way. He was born in Fall River Mills, in the heart of the California pine country, and grew up in Montague. He married the former Joyce E. Carpender, a native of Placerville, California.

Claude Gier, Senior, another former Setzer Box employee, joined the new firm as Plant Superintendent. He is still a member of the firm and serves as its Assistant Manager and as a Member of the Board of Directors.

When the State Box Company embarked in the box-shook manufacturing business, progress was rapid, and the firm began to grow. State Box entered into the first of several acquisitions by taking over the Tahoe Sugar Pine Company of Washington, Nevada County, in 1944.

The Tahoe sawmill has a production of 100,000 board feet per eight hour.

shift, and takes its production from 4,500 acres of company-owned timberland. The mill is located 18 miles northeast of Nevada City. California and Robert Jacks is the-present Resident Manager.

In 1945 the elder Walton acquired controlling interest in the Georgetown Lumber Company of Georgetown, California. This sawmill also has a production of 100,000 board feet per eight-hour shift. It is located 17 miles north of Placerville, California, and the

property includes 10,000 acres of company-owned timberland. The Resident Manager of this mill is Fred Becker.

During the year of 1950 Mr. Walton bought an interest in El Dorado Forest Products Company, which has complete re-manufacturing facilities. The El Dorado has three planers, a re-saw, a rip saw, and can produce all types of pattern stock. ft processes 150,000 board feet per eight-hour shift.

Bruce Walton, Junior purchased the balance of the El Dorado Company in 1957. Following the purchase it became a division of the State Box Company group, and is now known as the State Box Company, Planing Mill Division. Herman Bauer is the Resident Manager.

\Malton, Junior joined State Box in the early 1940's, and was appointed Resident Manager of the Georgetown Mill in 1946. In 1948 he moved to Phoenix, Arizona to head the State Box shook-sales office. He formed his own privately owned concern, the Arcade Moulding Company, in Sacramento, during 1952, and took leave of the State Box Company to direct his own company's management. How-

ever, when A. B. Waltoin, Senior passed away in 1955, Bruce, Junior returned to State Box to take over its direction.

The Lumber Sales Division of State Box was organized in April, 1959. At that time only a portion of the pine produced by the organization's mills was used in the manufacture of shook. The Sales Division was created to merchandise and market the entire production of the State Box Lumber Mills.

Henry Alsaker, formerly Western Sales Reoresentative for the Paine Lumber eompany, Ltd., was brought in to head up the Lumber Sales Division. He immediately set out to augment the production of the State Box Mills, so that the division's customers could be offered a complete line of the Western Pine species. The Sales Division buys from 23 sawmills, and sup- plies its customers all soft-textured western species. It markets between 5 and 6 million board feet per month.

The Sales Division specializes in dry white fir and green douglas fir studs, which are precision end-trimmed to any desired length. They are readied for unitized carloading, with green painted ends and are steelstrapped. The Division also sells and ships ponderosa pine, sugar pine, white fir, douglas fir, and cedar lumber, in addition to pine and fir mouldings and cut stock. Shipments are made by truck and trailer and by flat and box car. Rail shipments are made by the Southern Pacific.

Kenneth D. Gordon. a familiar name in Northern California lumber circles. handles most douglas fir sales, and specializes in the California market. William J. Clifton, with an extensive lumber background, primarily handles pine and specialty items. Donald E. Sames, now serving his apprenticeship in the Sales Division, had experience at the Georgetown operation and the Planing Mill Division. The combined experience of the sales force enables it to give alert service to all markets with any specie required.

Newest member of the State Box family is Oroville, which was completed in August, 1960. This is one of the firEt log-gang sawmills in California, and it produces 60,000 board feet per eight-hour shift. The mill is equipped with special machinery which permits it to process small logs that other mills cannot handle. This opens up a market for logs from cut-over timber or in thinning programs on mature stands. The unique machinery employs multiple saws and marks a

big step toward sawmill automation. The new mill efiects big savings in labor. A crew of six men can produce 60,000 board feet in eight hours, whereas standard sawmill production of 80,000 feet requires a crew of from 13 to 18 men. The mill produces all of the Western Pine species, specializing in ponderosa and sugar pine.

Another State Box Subsidiarv is Pres-to-Log Distributors of California, Incorporated. The firm was established in 19,1O. It has three machines, each of which produces three eight-pound logs every minute. Demand has been

sufficient to keep the machines operating round the clock, six or seven days per week. Production is one hundred and four tons of logs each twenty-four hour shift. Claude Gier, Senior, is Manager of this Division.

The final unit in the State Box Complex is the State Box Trucking Division, which is managed by Darrell W. Carpenter. State Box discovered that it was profitable to set up a specialized division to handle the trucking assignments for its many companies.

Officers of the parent State Box Company are A. Bruce Walton, Junior,

General Manager, and Claude Gier, Senior, Assistant Manager and Member of the Board of Directors. Mrs. Joyce E. Walton, President, is also a member of the Board and takes an active interest in the afiairs of the corporation. A. Bruce Walton III is putting in his apprenticeship in the Pres-to-Log Division, learning the business from the ground up in the tradition of his father and grandfather.

All Divisions of the State Box Company are functioning in smooth coordination, and prospects are bright for continued expansion in the future.

Work - Fun - Sun Mark Arizona Convention

A S WE TOOK the cab from the Yuma airport into the A. $131ds5t Hotel. scene of the 27th annual cbnvention of the Arizona Retail Lumber and Builders Supply Association, the driver remarked that it was a good thing that the convention wasn't a couple of weeks later, for the hot weather would really start then. \A/ell, we thought that the weather in mid-April was-among other convention qualitiesabout perfect, and even though it was 100 degrees on the Sunday we left, we still liked it. A great state, Arizona, and this one of the most enjoyable conventions.

Activities began Thursday morning, April 13, with the annual tournament at beautiful Yuma Country Club. The convention was formally called to order that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. by President Pete Pollock of Clifton, and the conventioneers were welcomed to Yuma by Mayor George E. Shackleford.

Main speaker was Walter T. Howard, Director of Technical Promotion on the Association staff, who discussed in detail this phase of the Association work. He presented for inspection the numerous pieces of literature which were being distributed in support of the use of wood products. He also detailed the exhibit put on at the Ramada Inn before the State Association of School Superintendents and School Boards, and spoke of the tremendous interest shown by these people and by architects who today are designing many projects for the educational institutions.

Howard also ontlined the new AIA File 19 which is being personally delivered to every architect and structural engineer in Arizona. This volume, completely indexed, makes it easier for architects and engineers to call for the use of wood products in the structures they design. This book is available to lumber dealers at a cost of $8.50 per copy.

Concluding event was the showing of a film demonstrating the use of styrofoam for docks and rafts, presented by Ed Rogers of the f)ow Chemical Company, Midland, Michi-

gan. Much interest was evidenced, especially from those dealers who have contacts near Arizona's lakes. It was pointed out that almost 9,000 people in the state have boats and that this is one of the fastest-growing sports in America.

Rogers also showed a film which demonstrated the use of styrofoam for plaster base in masonry construction which, it is said. can cut down installation and maintenance costs in air conditioning.

Golf again Friday morning, and let us mention at this point that the refreshment wagon (a converted VW Camper), hosted by Southwest Forest Industries, which daily made the rounds of the course and also the sprawling hotel grounds, proved in the hot weather to be as welcome as a St. Bernard with brandy cask on the top of Mt. Blanc.

Friday afternoon's business session was indeed a valuable and workmanlike meeting, with high attendance. J. C. Oldham, manager of sales promotion and advertising for the United States Gypsum Company, Los Angeles, led off with a presentation of U.S.G.'s film, "Teamwork for Profit." This high-qrrality color film presented in detail a program by which a dealer in his own establishment can better coordinate his operation, improve inter-office communications and increase his ernployees' sense of responsibility for and participation in the firm's work and objectives.

In practical operation, the "Teamwork for Profit" workshop meetings are intended to accomplish these objectives:

1. Let employees know what to do.

2. Establish clear-cut decisions on who is going

3. Get employees' understanding of how you (the to control the action.

4. Make it easy for them to become involved.

"Teamwork for Profit" is, in our opinion, a very well executed program, and should be of value to all dealers. The brochure describing it, and the complete kits which outline in detail the institution of such meetings, are available free of charge through your U.S. Gypsum representative or by writing to Advertising Service Manager, Department No. 122, l.Jnited States Gypsurn Company, 300 West Adams Street, Chicago 6, Illinois.

Main event of the afternoon was the panel discussion, "Do You Have Problems ?" a highly interesting "give-andtake" and beautifully moderated by Lawrence Nfel-rren, vice president of the Valley National Bank of Pl.roenix. Problems discussed, arrcl the "solutioners" were :

Credits and Collections-Jim Killen, chairman; Si Douglas, Roy Culpepper, Harold Spotts and Morris Pell. Generally, summarizations were that clealers are too slow to take action on collecting accorlnts ; that many credit policies are not clefinite or, if they are, that dealers do not stick to tl-rem ;

that there should be a definite understanding with the customer as to prices and terms-and that, in these highly competitive days (competition from all forms of business for the consumer's dollar), some kind of finance plan must be made available.

Personnel-Pete Gaffney, chairman; Nlartin Combs, Ken Springer, Douglas E. Boyle, and Martin Wist. It was emphasized that anyone who hires has personnel problems, and that every member of the firm must sell the business constantly. Proper hiring is the most important factor in developing a work force-take time to hire, to interview and to evaluate; check past references, ask the prospect about specific qualities-the bad points as well as the good. Use aptitude tests-but only if you know how to use them (combine judgment with test scores).

The high cost of hiring cheap help was stressed-it will take you longer to train inferior help, and'the end product won't be satisfactory, anyway. Develop the potentialities

Home Improvements-Allen Thum, chairman; Floyd Farar, Dale Grabe, Marc Schwarz, and John Lipani. It was stated, "Everyone realizes the importance of this subject because of the profit involved, but no olle does anything about it." It was stated that X)/o of what the consumer buys today is in a package, and that the lumber dealer should be able to offer the same kind of service. If you package, you relieve the public of the burden of ber,r'ildering detail and the necessity for making decisions. It was stressed that one man should be placed in over-all charge of the "Home Improvements" program, and the following ten steps were recommended for making the program work:

l. Hire the best manager you can afford.

2. Run the department in conjunction with your lumber yard, but keep it a separate organization.

3. Employ at least one full-time outside salesman.

(a) Train all your salesmen as building counselors.

(b) Prepare specifications.

(c) Have complete estimating service, preferably with your own personnel.

4. Begin your program slowly-one man for $5,000 per month, two for $10,000, etc.

5. Cash requirements are about one dollar for each sales dollar per month.

6. Develop uniform system for: pricing to customers, paying subcontractors, paying salesmen and management, and records for individual job progress and financial position.

/. Organize the final contracts, prepare financing, cover permits and legal angles and arrange sub-contracts.

8. Then take the contract for the' entire job and accept respollsibility of workmanship of the builder you have recommended.

showed that only l9/o of. the public go to lumber dealers for information on home improvements-thus, it is imperative that one use the merchandising aids which "pay the rent."

The dealer expects service from the wholesalers and manufacturers, and in these competitive times it behooves all to offer the most modern and best in products, service, promotions and merchandising aids.

Pricing for Profit-Charles Mann, chairman; Gary Fischer, George Rothfuss, Jess Stuart and Marvin Smith. First it was suggested, to unanimous agreement, that lumber retailing is one of the toughest jobs there is. What to do about it? Question: Do you have an optimum and compensatory price?-"eptimum" pricing being the establishment of the maximum price obtainable, item by item, while still satisfying and making repeat customers; "compensatory" pricing being geared to the extent of services wanted by various types of customers.

Six simple rules for pricing lumber and building materials were ofiered:

l. Looking at pricing constructively.

2. Understanding pricing terms.

3. Establishing proper mark-ups.

4. Evaluating competition.

5. Having a written price list.

6. Controlling cash discounts.

It was underscored that management must know its costs, that it keep its finger on the pulse of the whole operation, and that it must sell its qualities of service and stock availability.

Profits-Jack Sullivan, chairman; Dean Drake, A. G. Bennett and Ken Higgins. Suggestions for increasing profits centered largely upon making full utilization oI prodqcts, personnel and facilities. Study your yard layout for efficiency-if you have added mechanical equipment, it might be a good idea to rearrange your stock; place your most frequently used stock in the most accessiblt location. Make a systematic check of the piles for lumber that is going bad; rotate stock-don't pile new on top of old. The dealer must know his turn-over ration, that he may order efficiently.

Yard and office expenses should be analyzed; supplies should be purchased competitively. Store promotions must '(Continued, on Page 36)

Betfs-Sine of Culver City Launches Home lmprovement Campaign

Early this year Betts-Sine Lumber Company, 8770 Washington Boulevard, Culver City, launched its Home Improvement appeal to the builders and contractors in the Culver City-Venice area. More than 100 architects and builders attended an open house "kickoff" meeting held by the progressive retail concern.

The response was excellent and the results during the first 60 days have far exceeded expectations, according to H. F. "Red" Betts, executive in charge of the program.

Don Gabehart, Home Improvement Consultant, has been placed in charge of the promotional campaign, and as leads are secured from the firm's extensive advertising program they are handed to qualified contractors to start the actual work. The Betts-Sine organization selects the contractors

on a rotation basis after all arrang'ements are completed for the customer, including financing and selection of materials for the remodeling job.

Betts-Sine acts as a central clearing house for all concerned and the Home Improvement Consultant services each job from start to finish, arranging all negotiations with ownefs, banks and contractors, and cuts all the red tape, including permits, insurance and disbursement of funds.

"We call this our'Building Dreams'prog'ram, and public acceptance has been wonderful," said Bob Betts, partner in the retail firm. "Our survey indicates we have a one hundred million dollar potential in home improvement jobs in the area we serve. In 1960 this type of remodeling in our trade area developed in excess of $30 millions for home improvement without promotional action. This year we are confident we will be able to increase this figure by 700/o," he continued.

The Betts-Sine Lumber Company was established in 1928 by J. K. Sine, who operated the retail yard with Mrs. Sine until 1934. During that year veteran lumberman Warren F. Betts joined the firm following many years with PattenBlinn and other leading retailers of that era. He is still active in the business but is presently enjoying a world cruise with Mrs. Betts. His two sons, Red and Bob, now manage the business and conduct all affairs for the family owned-and-operated retail yard.

It requires the services of more than 20 trained employees to service the trade at the central location on Washington Boulevard. The two and one-half acre yard houses four storage sheds for dry stock, and the firm operates eight units of mobile equipment for plant handling of inventory and delivery.

Placing special emphasis on the remodeling market, Beckstrom noted that Arcadia Lumber Companv first entered the remodeling field 14 months ago and^ thit division has now become a major part of the operation. "Knowing what we know now, we only wish we had entered the field earlier," he said. Beckstrom noted that he felt the remodeling market held "huge potential" and possibly the salvation of the retail lumber industry.

Final speaker on the morning program was Allen Voorsang'er, who outlined Remington Rand's revised Univac proposition to the members of LMA. While the original proposition involved the leasing of a Univac by LMA, Remington Rand is now offering to process bookkeeping

data for LMA members in the company's San Francisco service bureau, using Remington Rand's qualified staff and Univac equipment. At a later date, when more LMA members sign up for lJnivac service, the necessary equipment could be. leased by the Association according to the original proposluon.

The morning session completed, the group then joined the ladies in the main dining room of the Ahwahnee for luncheon, the president's welcome by Frank Heard, and a talk by Joseph E. Burger, director of public relations for the H. V.

Company of Pasadena.

Burger's talk, entitled "How to Get Better," could have more aptly have been called "Wake Up and Sell !"

Listing the five most important things he considered necessary for the successful salesman, Burger surprisingly placed "Personality" in fifth place. The most important

single attribute for a successful salesman is "Character" (sincerity), Burger declared.

Another important quality considered only second to Character by Burger was "Industry" (work, see the people, make the calls). "Ability" (plan your work, know your stuff) took third position on the talented guest speaker's list, and "Courage" was listed in fourth position.

In expanding on the subject of "Courage," Burger praised the salesman "who can sell without cutting the price." Burger also noted that many salesmen never bother to go back and try to sell a firm after being turned down the first call. "Only l2/o of the salesmen in this country have the courage to'go back the fourth time," Burger said, "and consider this in the face that 60Vo of the orders come AFTER the fifth call !"

"Give me a man who thinks T.N.T. and he will succeed," Burger said. "T.N.T.? Why that stands for 'Today-Not Tomorrow !"'

Following Burger's stirring talk, the conventioners moved back into the Indian Room for another business session entitled "Turning Charge Sales Into Cash Sales," Charlie Dart, K-Y Lumber Company moderating the panel. Panelists included: H. G. Keller, vice-president, Allied Building Credits; Wendell Scott, general manager, Progress Lumber Company; William Donovan, California sales director, IJniversal C.I.T.; and Eric Beckstrom, Arcadia Lumber Company.

A good deal of the panelists' attention was directed to the Shell Home market as well as the Second Home market. Both ABC and Universal CIT are active in financing the Shell Home and Second Home markets (6/o loans available on a 10 year basis) and both Keller and Donovan also explained their company plans for remodeling and home improvement loans.

Both Scott and Beckstrom turned their attention on revolving credit systems they had installed in their respective companies, Scott noting that Progress now operates a revolving credit plan, charging lfu/o a month on the unpaid balance. Regular monthly payments are required and the customer is notified each month of his balance and the amount of payment expected for that month. Rather startling, Scott told the group that his revolving credit plan netted Progress over $13,000 for the year ended March 3l-bringing the cost of maintaining a stafi of four in his bookkeeping department to exactly $73.00 a month !

Beckstrom, in describing Arcadia's credit setup, noted that they too extend credit on two plans-the commercial account (contractors) and the revolving credit plan. Arcadia's revolving credit plan, Beckstrom explained, runs quite parallel to that of Progress, except that it adds a credit card to the system to speed the checkout of credit sales. Revolving credit systems being nothing new, Beckstrom noted that Sears Roebuck, often referred to as a

leader !n this field, actually adopted their system from Bakersfield Sandstone and Brick, one of the most success- ful operators in California in the retail building materials field.

Because of the personal nature of credit discussions, the panelists then moved to individual rooms on the main floor of the Ahwahnee for individual consultations. several dozen interested dealers participating in these sessions.

The second evening of the convention blossomed forth with the men wearing their loudest Hawaiian shirts and the gals donning their muu-muus in honor of "Luau Night at the Ahwahnee" with Hilo Hattie and Her Islanders. With the discarding of the usual semi-formal evening wear, what little ice left to be broken was used to cool the free flowing libations at the second industry sponsored cocktail party and the evening was a grand success.

Many Subjects Explored

_ Hamilton Knott, moderator for the Tuesday morning business session in the Indian Room, brought down hii gavel at 9:30, bringing into action another panel devoted to the sybject of "Rridging The Gaps Within Our Industry."

Panelists participating in this session included: John Lipani, district manager, Weyerhaeuser Company, Los Angeles_; Bill Chichester, district salesmanager, Blue DiaTolq Corporation; Jack Volker, salesmanager, Wholesale Building Supply, Inc.; Elmer Rau, Madera Lumber & Flardware Company; and Robert Fisher, general contractor, Fresno.

Expressing a desire for closer cooperation between all segments of the industry, the panel discussed the problems encountered at different levels of distribution within the industry. Lipani showed great interest on the part of the manufacturer in the upgrading of the personnel-behind the retail counter, noting that in their own case, the fate of a billion and a half dollar firm depends on $250 a month clerks in the nation' retail lumberyards.

Chichester noted that retailers must realize that the distributor must be allowed to do promotional work at the contractor level in order to create brand name acceptance -and thus business for both the distributor and his retailer customer.

Pointing out the advantage of doing business with a distributor, Volker noted that the dislributor offers the retailer a "one stop shop" service. "If the manufacturer were to sell the dealer direct, he (the retailer) would spend seven days a week just talking to salesmen," he said. -

Noting that some manufacturers accuse the retailer of not doing a job for them, dealer Rau pointed out that in many cases a manufacturer is selling only one line to a few hundred customers, but a dealei is iontending with some 5,000 products and selling as many as several thousand accounts.

With the spotlight on the dealer's customer, the general contractor Robert Fisher stated that in dealing with retailers he looked for quality first, service second, and price last. While not speaking for the AGC or Associated Homebuilders, Fisher stated that he felt a good many builders have come to recognize quality and service above price. The Fresno builder ilso felt tha[ there was a need for iloser cooperation between the general contractor and the dealer in the field of lien laws notably the credit status of a general contractor's various subcontractors. Too many times, Fisher noted, a general will pay off his sub after he has finished a job-only to find out later that the sub has defaulted on his materials bill to the dealer, who then slaps a lien on the entire iob.

Following the moining panel, Frank M. Isola, division general manag'er, Pabco Division, Fibreboard Paper Products Corporation, San Francisco, took the stand, his paper on the tantalizing subject of "Customers."

The_last speal1:r on the morning program, speaking on the subject of "Teamwork for Profit," was J. G. Oldfiam, sales promotion and advertising manag'er, western region, United States Gypsum Company. Following his talk, Oldham showed U. S. G's excellent new film on the subiect of "Teamwork," a film which has received enthusiastic reception at numerous showings throughout the country.

The final morning session concluded, the men headed for the -mqin {ining room for lunch and an outstanding talk by Jack Pfeiffer, McKinsey & Company, San Francisco management consultants in the field of lumber, and the retail lumber industry in particular.

_ Introduced by Elmer Rau, Pfeiffer's subject-"Lumber Retailing in the '60's Survival of the Merchandlsql"- brought home the fact that the retail lumber industry is, indeed, approaching the "moment of truth." The growth of

the "Super Dealer"-the "Momma Yard," if you will, at the qxpense of many small dealers was predicted by Pfeiffer. The "Super Dealer" or "Momma Yard" will serve both a retail-wholesale function, serving both as a source of materials to the contractor, and as a feeder yard to smaller y.ards in its trading area. While these yards will grow in size, Pfeiffer predicted that their growth in numbers would be relatively small.

The management consultant continued to raise a few eyebrows, particularly northern California ones, when he said that he felt the mills would ultimately give up the retail function. Quite possibly this could result from ilirect mill purchases by the "Super Yards" whose tremendous buying power could have quite an effect on mill economy.

The cash and carry operation? He'll remain in the picture, Pfeiffer said, "But quite probably he'll be forced to revert

back to 'service with a smile' and 'credit gladly extended."' This will be the metropolitan counterpart to the "Super Yard" dealer, catering to the shoulder trade and doine a booming business in the do-it-yourself field.

The last category, the small town general line retailer, was also given the green light for the '60's by Pfeiffer. This is the fellor.v who will continue to service the "carpenterbuilder" trade, the farm trade and the local retail trade, much as he is accustomed to doing today. But as many of these operators have already done today, they will have to L.-.9F" building materials sellers-not just lumbermgp, Pfeiffer noted.

Regarding the pattern of distribution breakdown in the field of lumber distribution, Pfeiffer stated that he felt lumber was. merely following an earlier pattern set by other industries, many of them in the building materials field.

A possible solution to the distribution problem might be direct mill sales to both the "Super Yard" and the wholesaler; wholesaler and "Super Yard" to "Supermarket"; and wholesaler to small town retailer, the group concluded.

"Merchandisers will live," Pfeiffer declared, "but 'it is time to find your proper place in the sun."

The final convention speaker, Wayne lfea, of the San Francisco tax attorney firm of Hea and Anderson, was introduced by incoming prexy Rau. Speaking on "What You Should Know About Your Financial and Tax Affairs," Hea stressed incorporation as a possible answer to many tax problems which plague the sole proprietor and partnership. Hea reviewed many of the recent tax rulings regarding depreciation, entertainment, trusts and pension plans. Regarding the latter (pension plans), Hea told the group that "if you own a corporation that earns $25,000 a year after salaries-and do not have a profit-sharing or pension plan in effect-you are losing thousands of dollars each year.

With the thought in mind that a good tax attorney can save you money, and that maybe now is a good time to look for that "place in the sun," the business sessions of the 21st convention were brought to a close, the gentlemen joining the ladies for a little late afternoon sunning, or perhaps 20 winks in preparation for the gala evening ahead.

Attention: Editor

Dear'WeSir:

note on page 36 of your most recent issue one picture of Car No. SP-560020 containing 67,280 teet of lumber. This is a pretty fair size car, however, we have received a car 3f x 10 AYE VG Cedar Siding that contained 97,000 feet on a surface measure account. Incidentally, this car of Cedar Siding was the largest car of Cedar Siding shipped.-

Occasionally we run across an item so good it must be constantly circulated, and this one gains in humanity every time it is passed along.

Our minister, Reverend Alan L. Searles, First Presbyterian Church, Marysville, used it to introduce a sermon. He credits Lester J. Waldman, Journal of University Women, QUOTE Magazine.

A mother in a Southern state was taking her second grade daughter to school. It was the first day under segregation rules and the woman had explained as best she could what the little girl might expect.

Anxiety and tension built up steadily as time to meet her after school dragged along, but finally it was time and the mother picked up her daughter and drove her home. The sirl was quiet and subdued, with nothing at all to say. After a few minutes the mother forced herself to ask, "How did it go at school today?"

The answer came, "There was a little Negro girl sat next to me."

Again the mother had to press the next question. "And how did things go?"

Her daughter replied, "We were both so scared we held each others' hands all day."

I defy anyone to read this aloud to a group of any size without raising. a lump in the throat.-G. W. BURNETT, Burnett Lumber Sales, Marysville, California.

Friday evening's entertainment centered upon a chuck wagon dinner held at Yuma's new dog track. The food was good, the atmosphere informal and the night lively.

Hoo-Hoo members joined the Association for Saturday morning's golf, with business again taking up at 1:30 p.m. First item-and entertainment-was presentation of "The Eternal Triangle"-a three-act play starring the dealerconsumer-supplier, showing situations as they are generally handled in the field of home improvements. The cast were members of the Thespian Troupe f105 of Yuma High School and did a most professional job.

John White of the U.S. Epperson Underwriting Company, Kansas City, Missouri, then gave a detailed explanation of the needs for proper fire insurance. He explained the various types of insurance available, the methods for

evaluating properties in relation to insurance and asked dealers to take time out for a consultation with a professional insurance man for a study of individual problems.

Followed Jarvis Hurd of the Equitable Life Assurance Society of Phoenix who spoke of the desirability of group insurance, the tvpes of coverage, cost factors, and the need to have programs which offer maximum coverage while still remaining rvithin the ability of the insurer to pay.

Charles Mann did an able job as master of ceremonies at the banquet. Outgoing and incoming officers were introduced, and golf trophies were presented by Marvin Smith, chaiiman of the golf committee. Ralph Russell joined Consolidated in 1923, was elected vice president in 1955 and became a member of the Board in 1959.

At the annual shareholders' meeting, Russell and Macmillan, together with Oliver Carlson of San Francisco, Carlton Kendall of Oakland and Mrs. John H. Tyson of Corona del Mar, were re-elected to the Board, and Robert C. Green of Oakland and Preston Hotchkis of Los Angeles were elected as nerv Directors.

Established in Wilmington in 1905, Consolidated Lumber Company has during the past 55 years continued to expand its operations until the plant now covers an area of approximately 54 acres. During the past few years it has handled in excess of 160,000,000 feet of lumber through the plant each vear.

A Mon Who Thinks for Himself

Yes, there is one-apart from all those fellows who we thought existed only in the cigarette advertisements, He's W. C. "Ketch" Ketchersid of Prescott. Talking to him at the cocktail party which preceded the Arizona Convention's annual banquet, we were ofrered a cigarette and, noticing the unfamiliar appearance of the package, we inquired as to the brand. "Picayune." \ll/ell, they smoke just fine, but with a name like that, we doubt if they'll ever go over big.

"Make a fire house get away on timber sales! The pole is greased with a brand new competitive price schedule, bound to keep the wires hot. Leading smoke eaters agree, Lam-Loc Timbers are the best for strength, easy construction and just plain beauty. We'll anticipate your call."

ft was daylight one morning, and a fisherman sitting on the end of a long pier extending out into the Gulf from Galveston heard th,e thunder of flying feet, and looked up to see a tall young man, wearing a full dress suit and a top hat, running at full speed down the pier. As the fisherman looked, the tall young man hit the end of the pier like a trained broad-jumper, and sprang far out into the waters of the Gulf. Of course, the fisherman dropped his pole and rushed to the end of the pier, only to see the jumper swimming leisurely back to the dock. He loaned him a helping hand, and then asked,. as the young man got safely up on the dock:

"W'hat's the matter? Suicide, and then lost your nerve, or something?"

"Suicide nothing !" said the blase young man in the drip- ping dress suit. "My name's Sporty Mclniss. I'm from Nashville, Tennessee. One of these Galveston gamblers bet me a million dollars against one dollar I couldn't jump across the Gulf of Mexico, and with them kind of odds . . Boy! I'll try anything!"

"'We have followed the teachings of Art Hood from start to finish in this big selling campaign and we know we are on the right track. In our area, now is the time for home remodeling, and we intend to secure our share of the public's business. We are using every means to attract the home owner to our establishment, which includes newspapers, radio and direct mail advertising. We are confident 1961 will be our banner year in Culver City and we hope other retail lumber dealers are interested in this businessgetting promotion, which is excellent for the community, the bankers, contractors and, of course, the lumber dealer," said Red and Bob Betts.

Good Golf-Srormy Weqther for Dubs

A good turnout of l)ubs, Ltd. members took in the club's l46th monthly tournament at Silverado Golf Club in Napa despite a blustery, rainy day. The weather conditions on

17315

the course separated the men from the boys and, as the following scores will indicate, apparently only the "boys" show up for golf.

First flight winner was Jim Maher (81-11), followed by Gran Geisert (89-15) and Dusty Duestruel (U-6) in third position. In the second flight, Ralph Bowman copped first position (89-17), with Walt Hjort (92-19) and Tom Gray (94-18) coming up close on his heels. Third flight winner was Tom Jacobsen (98-25), Al Soulages (100-26) in second position, with Bill Gilmore (108-31) and John Polach (103-26) locked in a tie for third low net.

High gross was awarded to Jack Crane for a scintillating 108, and guests J. Hatton, Orville Bresee, F. L. Baysinger, M. B. Forsberg and Jim Cook won a golf ball each.

Ralph Bowman turned up for the evening dinner wearing his new dark green jacket won at the March invitational tournament. March was a good month for Ralph as last month he picked up a three foot high trophy for winning the Rotary Club District tournament.

Dubs will meet again on May 19, at the Mira Vista Golf and Country Club, to play a tournament in conjunction with the Annual Oakland Reveille.

We Goofed

You'll find in this issue two convention stories-Northern California's, with by-line by Max Cook, Arizona's, with by-line by ourselves. The only reason we mention this is that in the previous issue we had a comprehensive reporting of Southern California's convention bv Ole May, and completely forgot to give Ole byline credit! Fortunately, Ole's no prima donna, thus we didn't get our knuckles wrapped with a length of hardwood. We did, however, wish to correct the omission at this time.-Editor.
