With stocks that have been slowly accumulating for a number of weeks, the Douglas Fir industry is now, for the first time in several years, in position to supply almost anything a buyer or builder could ask for, and on reasonably short notice.

The same can be said of Douglas Fir plywood. Announcement is just made by the plywood industry of the Northwest that plywood stocks of all sorts are now available in quantity, and their group of mills announces that it will immediately spend a million dollars advertising that fact to the building trade.

Western Pine market ,conditions have not yet fully developed, because so many of those mills were closed for the winter and are just now returning to full speed production, and just getting their lumber dry for shipment. Upper grades and also No. 2 Ponderosa are strong at the moment.

What was said of Fir may also be said of Southern Pine. For the first time in years there are available mill stocks, and mixed cars are to be had. Same with Southern hardwoods. Small mill stocks are in over-supply while the larger manufacturers have fair control of the situation. Oak flooring is plentiful.

For the week ending May l4th, 166 mills reporting to the West Coast Lumbermen's Association reported production ol 1M,209,171 feet; orders 5 per cent under production; shipments 5.6 per cent over production. For the

previous week these same mills reported production 106,284,512 feet; orders 18.4 per cent under production; shipments 12 per cent under production.

Western Pine Association members, 98 mills, reported for the week ending May 14th, productron 61,670,000 feet; orders 51,527,m feet; shipments 58,517,000 feet. For the previous week these same mills reported production 58,763,0W feet; orders 51,865,000 feet; shipments 59,929,000 feet.

The Southern Pine Association, with 104 mills, for the week ending May 14th reported production 16,098,000 feet; orders 16,139,000 feet; shipments 16,364,000 feet. For the previous week these same mills reported production 14,(Continued on Page 52)

George E. Ream Becomes Vice President Of The \(/estern Hardwood Lumber Company

Western Hardwood Lumber Company, of Los Angeles, announced on May 24th that George E. Ream, of Los Angeles, formerly with George D. Ream Company, had become actively associated rvith that concern. He has been elected a vice president of the company, and is identified with the plyu'ood, door and kindred lines departments. He is also a member of the company. He moved into the Western offices at once.

Frank J. Connolly, president, and Glenn Cahill, first vice president of Western, join in making the announcement that the addition of Mr. Ream to their active staff is a matter of great satisfaction to them. Mr. Ream r'vill be directly associated u,ith Mr. Cahill in the operation of the department whicl.r the latter has built into a prominent and successful part of the \Vestern business.

George Ream is, since he is one of the very bg51 knorvn and most respected personalities in the lumber and building rnaterials business in Southern California, and has been for many years. A building material man all his life, he started tn 1922 as manager of miscellaneous building material sales for Kerckhoff & Cuzner, of Los Angeles, which position he held until 1937, at u'hich time he organized the George E. Ream Company. For the past twelve years he has operated that concern as one of the leading rvholesalers and 'ivarehouse distributors of plywood and other building materials in the entire state. The name George E. Ream has become one to conjure rvith in the building material busiNCSS.

His association rvith a great concern like Western Hardwood gives him a splendid opportunity to exercise his unquestioned business genius, and new and interesting lines of merchandise will be added to Western's present splendid set-up.

Stephen G. Freeman in New Wholescrle Lumber Business

Stephen G. Freeman reports that he is norv operating a wholesale lumber business in Balboa, California,.the business having started several u'eeks ago, and that he represents in that territory several large Oregon sawmills. Carload shipments only. He is located at l53Z I\firamar Avenue. During the rvar he skippered various transports, freighters, and tankers for the government, and still holds his master's ticket.

Changes Announced In George E, Ream Company

Change in management of the George E. Iteam Co'mpany was announced by Martin W. Degeller, President of the Harbor Plywood Corporation, effective May 12th.

M. S. Munson replaces George E. Ream as Manager. W. J Rawlings, Manager of the Harbor Plywood Corporation of California was elected vice president of the Ream Company. In addition to his responsibilities as manager of the San Francisco and Oakland branches, he will be active in the conduct of the Los Angeles business.

The Ream organization is a subsidiary of the Harbor Plyrvood Corporation, Hoquiam, Washington, pioneer manufacturers of weatherproof plywood and other types of panels. Their trade names, Super Harbord, Harborite, Harbord, and Giant panels are favorably known to the lumber dealer trade, who sell these products and those who actually use them. This manu{acturer's quality merchandise has always been handled on an ethical lumber dealer sales basis via branch warehouses and through established distributors, and their policies have been accepted as a distribution model by the trade.

The George E. Ream Company, located at 235 South Alameda Street, Los Angeles, was established in October, 1937, by the Harbor people as a distribution branch to serve the Southern California dealer trade. Leroy J. Stanton announces that E. J. Stanton & Son has just opened a very important business branch in Sacramento, in the shape of a big lumber concentration yard.

They have leased eight acres of land from the Heffernan Supply Company in that city, and adjacent to the modern planing mill of that concern. They rvill use the facilities of tl-ris mill for processing and preparing their lumber for the market, and will establish on the acreage mentioned a large lumber storage yard. Lumber will be brought in from many small sawmills in the Pine lumber territory above Sacramento, and rvill be piled, dried, processed and shipped clirectly from this nslv yard to Stanton customers all over the country, and principally in the East.

For a great many years Stanton has been bringing such lumber all the rvay to their Los Angeles plant for seasoning and processing. From norv on they rvill save a great deal on freighting and handling. Most of the lumber that rvill come to the Sacramento branch will be Pondersosa Pine, but a certain amount of Fir dimension n ill also be handled from the same mills.

A news story in "The Inyo Register," published at Bishop, California, brief ly relates a story of heroism on the part of a rvell known Southern California lumberman.

According to this story three men' H' G' Donnell, Frank Marino and Jack Zukie went out in a boat on Grant Lake. The boat capsized, the weather was cold, the rvaterivas icy, and none of the three could srvim. The paper said they would have been lost in a ferv minutes' Harl D. Crockett and John W. Givens were on the lake in another boat, and they made a quick and ,clever rescue of the imperiled men.

During the intervening period to March, 1946, he rvas in the Army, coming out as Lieutenant-Colonel. He returned to work with the United States Plywood Corporation at San Francisco. His principal work with tl-rat concern was calling on lumber dealers, rvith rvhom he has a large acquaintance. He is a native of San Francisco, is married and lives in Berkeley.

The convention was called to order at 9:30 a. m., President Harold R. Britt, Phoenix, presiding.

The invocation lvas made by Rev. Raymond A. Kurtz, pastor of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Douglas.

The address of welcome was made by Hon. Ben Williams, Mayor of Douglas, and Hon. Raul Corella, Mayor of Agua Prieta, Sonora, Mexico. The response was made by Vice President S. A. Douglas.

The annual convention of the Ar\zona Retail Lumber and Builders Supply Association, Inc., held at the Gadsden Hotel, Douglas, Ariz., on May 6, 7 and 8, was a big success, and there rvas an all-time record attendance. All the business sessions were attended bv a "seli-out" crorvd of interested dealers.

This was the first year that exhibits rvere shown at the convention, and they rvere vierved not only by the people in attendance but by lumber dealers from Sonora, Mexico, Southern New Mexico, and by people from Southern Arizona. It was estimated that over 3,000 people saw the exhibits.

The business session opened at 10:00 a. m. rvith an address, "Federal Tax Laws Have Pampered Favorites," by Joseph F. Leopold, manager of the Southwestern office of the National Tax Equality Association of Chicago.

James C. O'Malley, O'Malley Lumber Co., Phoenix' was the next speaker. His subject was "State and Federal Legislation Discussion."

In the afternoon there were reports of the various committees, election of officers, and a meeting of the board of directors.

Resolutions

Resolutions were passed thanking the good people of Douglas, the convention speakers, Joe Rice, the exhibitors whose displays were outstanding in interest and educational value to all in attendance; proposing a State Register; commending the Arizona Legislature Interim Committee on the good work they are doing; favoring repeal of the r,vartime excise taxes; urging Congress to enact lavi's to tax all Consumer Cooperatives equitably with other taxpayers before increasing individual or corPoration incorne taxes; favoring the continued exemption of all retail establishments under the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938 (Wage and Hour) ; protesting against {urther steps on the pbrt of the Federal government toward the building of mass housing units ; asked the Arizona Congressional delegation to support and vote for a Federal Labor Law that should be considered from the viewpoint of the public, the individual employee, the emplover and the union, and not on the basis of "strict party line."

In a Declaration of Principles the members went on record to resist to the utmost any further encroachment upon the principles of free enterprise, industriousness and thrift.

Annual Banquet

The annual banquet was held at the Club Social in Agua Prieta. Sonora. Mexico. The entertainment included Mariachis from Nogales, floor show from Cuba and a dance band from Hermosillo.

Frank MacDavis, nationally known humorist and pl-rilosopher, was the speaker of the evening. Dancing then continued to a late hour.

Capacity Crowd Attends 17th Annual Reveille

A capacity crou'd exceeding 600 attended the 17th Annual Reveille, sponsorecl by Hoo-Hoo Club No. 39 Oakland, at Hotel Claremont, Berkeley, on Friday evening, May 13, 1949.

The attendance included many from Northern California tol\.ns outside the San Francisco Bay area, some from Oregon, and a fel' from Los Angeles.

The annual golf tournament, held at the Mira Vista Country Club, attracted 84, a record number of participants.

President Tom Jacobsen, Sr., of Hoo-Hoo Club No. 39, u'elcomed the large crorvd and tlranked the firms lvho cooperated financially to make the Reveille a success.

Ev Len,is, general chairman of committees, thanked the various committee chairmen, 'ivhose good work helped to make this annual get-together meeting one of the best ever held.

Committee chairmen were the follorving: Banquet, Al Kelly; Entertainment, Bill McCubbin; Finance, Jim Over-

cast; Program, Herb Farrell; Publicity, Bill NIcCubbin; Reception, Herb Farrell ; Ticket Sales, Joe Pepetone ; Golf Tournament, Don Kesselring; Reservations, George Dunn ; General Secretary, Chris Sechrist.

Judging by the generous applause the entertainment met rvith the hearty approval of the audience. Dick Kimball was master of ceremonies, and the music u'as furnished by Jack Petty and his orchestra.

It is interesting to recall that the Reveille \\'as started in 1933 on the suggestion of Clem Fraser, a past president of Hoo-Hoo Club No. 9. In proposing this activity Clem said the word reveille meant an au'akening, aud that the men in the lumber industry needed to an'ake from the depression rvhich at that time seemed to dominate everybody. It must have been a good ide afor the Rer-eille has prospered ever since.

The ner,v sar'vmill of Sugar Pine Lumber Co' at Hoppa, Calif., rvhich is affiliated with the Arcata Manufacturing Co., Arcata, has a capacity of 100,000 feet per day, and is expectecl to start operation June 1. It is a band mill, and the cut is mainiy fir, with some Sugar pine, and small percentages of Ponderosa pine and Incense cedar.

A. J. Wagner, 78, formerly auditor for the Santa Fe Lumber Co., San Franiisco, passed away April 26, in a San Francisco hospital.

He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Ada Belle Wagner. He was associated with the Santa Fe Lumber Co., for more than 30 years, and retired two years ago.

Death of Mcrx A. Vener

Max A. Vener, aged 47, president of the Zero Plywood Company, of Los Angeles, died May llth in Good Samaritan Hospital after a month's illness. His funeral was conduncted with Masonic rites on May 13th, and he was buried at Beth Olam Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, one son, and three grandchilddren.

Clarence U. Beach, 62, Los Angeles, passed away suddenly of a heart attack on March 25, while on a call at the Wilmington yard of the Consolidated Lumber Co., by rvhom he had been employed as salesman in the Los Angeles area the past twelve years. Previously he had been 'ivith the San Pedro Lumber Co. and the Owens-Parks Lumber Co. as salesman in the same field. Before coming to I-os Angeles he was in the lumber business in Seattle. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Hazel Beach. Funeral services were held in the Chapel of the Pines, Rosedale Crematory, Los Angeles.

Hcrrry S. Thompson

Harry S. Thompson, r,vell known former retail lumberman, passed away in San Francisco May n, I9+9.

He started in the lumber business with the late J. H. Kruse, and a few years later, in 1909, established his own business. In 1941 he sold out and retired.

Survivors are his widow, Mrs. Henrietta Kruse Thornpson; a daughter, Mrs. Gladys T. Moncure; a sister, Miss Mabel A. Thompson. IIe was born in San Francisco 69 years ago.

lle was a member of King Solomon Lodge No. 260, F. & A. M.; Fresno Commandery, K. T.; Islam Temple, A.A.O.N.MS, and the Rotary Club of San Francisco.

The beautiful new store of Goodman Lumber Co-, 445 Bay Shore Boulevard, San Francisco, had its official opening May 2. Their old store was completely destroyed by fire about a year ago. The stock includes lumber and all kinds of building materials. A new floor covering department has been added, featuring linoleum, rugs, and carpets.

Plane Saves Executives' Time

A. S. Murphy, president, The Pacific Lumber Company, San Francisco. and Kenneth Smith, assistant to the president, left May 4 in the company's private plane-a converted F.Z3-'for Chicago. Mr. Murphy continued on to New York, and Mr. Smith and Carl W. Bahr, Eastern sales manager, Chicago, by using the plane were able to call on most of the company's sales representatives and distributors east of the Mississippi. Mr. Murphy and Mr' Smitlr returned to San Francisco May 20.

The dinner dance of the Northwestern California Lumbermen's Club , held on Thursday evening, May 19, at the Eureka Inn, Eureka, was a most enjoyable and successful afiair, with an attendance of. about 275.

John R. Freeman, smiling ambassador for the California Redwood Association, has been in Texas the past month, meeting rvith jobbers ancl dealers in both large cities and smaller c<-rmmunities, and laying the foundation for a promotion campaign in.this territory of redwood lumber produ,cts. He was the guest of The GULF COAST LUN{BERMAN and the Houston Retail Lumbcr Dealers Association at their monthly meeting at the Seven Seas the evening of May 77; and attended the annual meeting of tl.re Texas Lurnber Nfanufacturers Association at Lufkin, in the heart of the East Texas Southern Pine territory, Saturday, May 21. From there he and Mrs. Freeman continued on to Dallas; Wichita, Kansas; Kansas City, Mo'. and intermediate points. Before reaching Houston he made stops enroute from his home in San Francisco, at Corpus Christi, Laredo, Eagle Pass, San Antonio, and a number of other cities. He has made a world of friends in his first trip to and through the Lone Star State.

Sh"r*u,t Bishop, president of the California Redrvood Association, made a flying trip to llouston where he spent one day in conference with Mr. Freeman and then returrred to California.
