Portland, Oregon, June l2-During May, Douglas fir mills continued their'climb toward the greatest production year since 1929, H. V. Simpson, executive vice president o{ the West Coast Lumbermen's Association, announced today'

Douglas fir lumber production for the first 22 weeks of 1950 totaled 4,081,052,000 board feet-an increase of more than 81,000,000 feet above production for a similar period in 1949, Simpson said.

"Although production still does not match the recent record high set in 1948, there is an excellent possibility that the latter will be surpassed be{ore the end of the year," Simpson predicted. "The log supply is improving, new small mills are coming into production, and most longer established mills are working at full capacity."

"The Douglas fir industry is making every effort to provide an adequate supply of lumber to meet this year's unprecedented demand for housing and construction lumber.t'

The California Forest & Range Experiment Station has estimated that there were 393 active mills in the redwood region during 1948, and that redwood production was 793 million feet. Tl-rey based their estimate on reports from 195 mills which included all mills cutting over 5 million feet as rvell as most of the mills cutting over 1 million feet during the year. The 2I mills which reported to us for both years, produced 443 million feet or 56/o of the total 1948 estimated redwood cut. If production of all other redwood mills also decreased 2.5/o, as noted above, the 1949 estimated redwood cut woqld be approximately 772 million feet.

DOTBEER & CARSON IU'YIBER CO. Quatity REDWOOD Since 1863

I got a stimulating kick out of the above. The highly conservative newspaper, The Daily Telegraph, of London, is celebrating its one hundredth birthday. And the above is a quotation from one of its editorials announcing that anniversarY

Those are words that find an echo in my heart-in all my thinking. If there is one thing in this world that I despise more than most other things it is the pitiful human who is always trying to be impartial. What a world of thrill, and joy, and living he misses. Nobody has any business being impartial except a judge on the bench. A newspaper or journal that is editorially impartial is as useless as a last year's bird nest. There is nothing more hopeless than a professional fence straddler.

Got a letter the ott.r laf frl* " subscriber enclosing order for subscriptions to this journal for the editors of several newspapers. He said he wanted his editor friends to read these Vags. Thought they might be stimulated editorially. That was a high compliment. You don't get letters of that sort by being impartial. You get them by being thoroughly prejudiced on all interesting subjects, and speaking out in the strongest words at your command. "There are two certain signs of a weak mind," says an old adage. "One is to speak when one should be silent, the other to be silent when one should speak."

The greatest joy that comes to an editor is having definite opinions on every important matter that comes along, and trying to translate those opinions into words and phrases that will impress the people who read his stuff. To stimulate the thinking of his readers in the directions that he considers right-that is the editorial writer's job and his joY' r< r< :{<

Heaven preserve us from the whispering monkey-doodles who are all things to all men, riding the top rail at all times, and fearing to speak the truth for fear of treading on toes. And right now more than ever before in the history of this nation, is the time for straight thinking, and fearless speaking. To realize a wrong and fail for any reason to lift your voice against it is to commit that most pitiful of all sinsthe sin of omission.

I beleve that the ,""a.rl rirni" column will agree to one thing about them; that they have never been "editorially

impartial." And they will continue not to be.

I thought I might bump heads with some of my readers recently when I used this entire column for one issue showing up that prince of phonies of Old Testament days; a guy named Joseph. I held the copy over a couple of weeks before deciding to print it. And, do you know what? I have letters in response to that editorial that come from Catholics, Protestants, and Jews, and they unanimously agree with what I said. Looks like people nowadays take off their blinkers when they read, even though it is the Bible. You see the Old Testament insists that Joseph was a good man, and then goes ahead and proves him to be the prime rascal, rackateer, ":U

crook of all time.

Webster's New International dictionary has a definition you may find interesting. It is the definition of "dema. gogu€." It says he is, "A leader or orator popular with or identified with the people. One skilled in arousing the prejudices and passions of the populace by rhetoric, sensational charges, specious arguments, catchwords, cajolery, etc., especially a political speaker or leadgr who seeks thus to make capital of social discontent and incite the populace, usually in the name of some popular cause, in order to gain political influence or office."

So now you know *rr"i" I.rrLro*.r" is. Know any?

Robert H. Jackson, Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court, recently rendered what seems to be a splendid service to the average man who is trying to keep his thinking in pace with what goes on in this disturbed and confused country today. He defined Communism in words that the average person can clearly understand. How often of late have you read the question-why hasn't the Communist Party in this country the same rights as the Republican, the Democratic, or :rny other political party? And the questioner seems to feel he has handed out an unanswerable guer'' * >k >r<

In a concurring opinion handed down in a recent case before the Supreme Court, Justice Jackson replied to that question, setting the Communist Party separate and apart from other parties, in the following words, which you should file for reference and for use. The remainder of this column shall be devoted to quoting Justice Jackson's words. ***

"Congress," said Justice Jackson, "could rationally conclude that, behind its political party facade, the Communist Party is a conspiratorial and revolutionary junta, organ-

ized to reach ends and to use methods which are incompatible with our constitutional system. A rough and compressed grouping of this data would permit Congress to draw these important conclusions as to its distinguishing gharacterists:

"l-The goal of the Communist Party is to seize powers of government by and for a minority, rather than to acquire power through the vote of a free electorate . . . The Communist program only begins with seizure of government. . . It purposes forcibly to recast our whole political and social structure after the Muscovite model . . . a belated counterrevolution to the American Revolution, designed to undo the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and our Bill of Rights.

"2-The Communist Party alone among American parties past or present is dominated and controlled by a foreign government. It is a satrap party, which, by a threat of civil disorder, adds the threat of betrayal into alien hands. The chain of command from the Kremlin to the American party is stoutly denied and usually invisible, but it was unmistakably disclosed by the American Communist Party somersaulting in synchronism with shifts in the Kremlin's foreign policy. . .

"3-Violent and undemocratic means are the calculated and indispensable methods to attain the Communist Party's goal. It would be incredible naivete to expect the American branch of this movement to forego the only methods by which a Communist Party has anywhere come into power. Unless the Communist Party can obtain some powerful leverage on the population, it is doomed to remain a negligible factor in the United States. Ilence, conspiracy, violence, intimidation and the coup d'etat are all that keep hope alive in the Communist breast.

the sit-down, the slow-down, sabotage, or other means of producing industrial paralysis. .

"g-f,vs1y member of the Communist Party is an agent to execute the Communist program. Major political parties in the United States have never been closely knit or secret organizations. Anyone who usually votes the party ticket is reckoned a member. . . One may quarrel with the party and bolt its candidates and return again. Membership in the Communist Party is totally different. The party is a secret conclave. Members are admitted only after acceptance as reliable and after indoctrination in its policies, to which they are fully committed. . . . Each pledges unconditional obedience to party authority. . . . Individuals who assume such obligations are chargeable, on ordinary conspiracy principles, with responsibility for and participation in all that makes up the party'sprogram.

"There has recently entered the dialectic of politics a cliche used to condemn application of the conspiracy principle to Communists. 'Guilt by association' is an epithet frequently used and little explained except that it is generally accompanied by another slogan, 'guilt is personal.' Of course it is; but personal guilt may be incurred by joining a conspiracy. There is certainly sufficient evidence that all members owe allegiance to every detail of the Communist Party program and have assumed a duty actively to help execute it, so that Congress could, on fa' miliar conspiracy principles, charge each member with the goals and means of the nT.t; .;

"I cannot believe that Congress has less power to protect a labor union from Communist domination than it has from employer domination."

Fcrn Mcil

"4-The communist

to gain this leverage and hold on the American population by acquiring control of the labor movement. . . . The Communist Party . is not primarily interested in labor's vote it strives for control of labor's coercive power-the strike,

For old times' sake, here is my check to keep your "all but perfect" lumber journal coming to my office. I enjoy every bit of it, not the least of which are Jack's stories and editorials, etc., etc.

Henry Hink.denies emphatically that he was there when Dolbeer & Carson started their first sawmill up in the Redll'ood country. That r,vas in 1863, and l{enry refuses to admit that his early debut took place anyrvhere near that far back. The truth is that Henry has been with the company so long and so prominently that even the oldest of our lnmber folks car-rnot seem to recall when he was not singing the praises of tl-re "oldest Redwood concern."

The fact is that Henry M. Hink only joined up with Dolbeer & Carson the short space of forty years back. It was on June the tenth, i910, that a well remembered member of the San Francisco lumber fraternity, Mr. Wm. G. N{ugan, hired himself an office boy. Mr. Mugan was secretarl.-treasurer of Dolbeer & Carson, and ran the San Francisco office. Little did he think, we may be sure, that he s-as hiring his on'n successor, as well as the successor to the famous previous presidents of Dolbeer & Carson, when he took into his offrce a small boy who had a great smile ancl a lot of pep, to be the offrcial "runner" for the office.

But just because Henry did not start at the beginning of the operations of the old Redrvood manufacturing concern, is no reason rr'hy he did not get there in time to make a lot of history, and n'hv the forty years he has spent rvith

the company does not stretch from quite primeval to extremely modern times and lumbering nrethods. For, believe it or not, rvhen Mr. Hink first stepped into the concern in 1910, they were shipping their entire product of Redwood lurnber from Humboldt Bay to California points by sailing vessels. Their mill then cut about 75,000 feet of lumber daily, and it all went by sailboat to just five customers, two in Southern and three in Northern California. who took their entire output. Selling Redwood for Dolbeer & Carson was a simple matter in those days.

But age did not signify old methods, and the concern became a very progressive one, and in 1923 built in place of their old mill the first all-electric sawmill the Pacific Coast had seen. Today much rebuilding and improving still goes on at that Eureka plant. Right now $250,000 is being spent on additional modern-type dry kilns, and the company is producing more lumber than at any time in its long history.

Now, let's have a brief look at the fersonal history of Henry Hink. He was born in San Francisco in 1893, so he is definitely a native son both of the city and of the state. He attended the public schools of San Francisco, (Continued on Page 14)

and then went to Heald's Business College in that city. He did odd jobs during his school days, and worked for some time on the San Francisco Examiner during his spare hours and Saturdays. That brings us up to June 10, 1910, when he struck Wm. G. Mugan for the job of office boy, as above related, and got it. The offices of the company were in the Merchants Exchange Building, where they still remain. Henry was then not quite 17 years old. In high school and night school he had studied such things as business law, business administration, and accounting, so he was considerably better fitted to seek promotion than is tl-re average office boy starting out.

In turn he became stenographer, bookkeeper, lumber salesman, and then sales manager. In 1936 Mr. Mugan died, and Mr. Hink became for the first time an official of the company, secretary and treasurer. Just a year later vice president Wm. M. Carson died, and Mr. Hink was made vice president, still continuing to handle the sales. In l94l the president of the concern, Mr. J. M. Carson, died, and Henry was elected president and general manager. That, in a nutshell, is one of the quickest climbs from office boy to president ever noted in a major business operation.

It was a natural succession in each case. Always Mr. \ Hink prepared himsetf for the next step up by mastering

all details of the business as he went along. His amazing competency and versatility enabled him to handle, not only the business affairs of the company, but likewise to administer the very large estates of several members of the firm as they passed on. Ife became a man of all trades in a very important fashion.

In 1915 he married Miss Elizabeth Archbold, who still lives with and tolerates him, and has contributed abundantly to making him the powerful sort of man that he is today. They have a son, Robert Hink, who is in the advertising business; a daughter, Mrs. Bernice Macfie; and a grandson, Robert Hink, Jr. Their home is in Berkeley.

Henry Hink has found time to devote and ability to share in activities outside his big Dolbeer & Carson job. He has been a director of the Redwood Export Company, president of the Redwood Sales Company, and a director of the California Redwood Association, for many years. He belongs to the San Francisco Rotary Club, the San Francisco Commercial Club, the Los Angeles Jonathan Club, and is a past president of Hoo-Hoo Club No. 39 of Oakland.

Asked about his chief hobby outside of business, and he says it is golf. His {riends report that in his case golf is indeed a hobby, but by no means an art. Let us call it a relaxation.

Maybe a good key to the character of the hero of this sketch was the advice given him many times in his early days by his first employer and mentor, Mr. Wm. G. Mugan, who used to say: "Henry, don't promise any more than you can deliver, but when you give your word, keep it, no matter what the cost."

The lumber industry, wl-rich claims Henry as a mighty fine specimen of its top personnel, will tell you that he has always lived up to the advice that Mr. Mugan gave him. That could be the main reason for his remarkable success. His always present enthusiasm has been a great driving force in everything he does.

Add to his great business acumen, his deep enthusiasm, his unswerving honesty, and his engaging personality; add to these a swell guy who loves his fellow man, and you've got a pretty good picture of Henry Hink. Yes, a very good one.

ft was a case in domestic relations court, and Mrs. Jones had done most of the talking and made all the noise. IIer sad-looking and subdued husband sat with head low, and had little to say. Leveling an inexorable finger at poor Mr. Jones his battling spouse shouted:

"f have notr" she snapped back.

"Then, Madam," continued the judge, "permit me to suggest that in view of this situation as I see it, you refer to the defendant, your husband, throughout the remainder of this hearing, not as 'that unmitigated louse,' but rather as 'that unlitigated mouse."'

Roc-\(/ood Flooring Simple to Apply

The new Roc-Wood Flooring, advertised in this issue by Galleher Hardwood Company, wholesale distributor, 6430 Avalon Boulevard, Los Angeles 3, is handled by lumber dealers all over the country, according to this firm, which stresses the fact that it is simple to apply, and that anyone can lay a Roc-Wood floor. It sets in four hours, can be walked on rn 12 hours, and after 24 hows is readv for unlimited use.

Among the claims made for Roc-Wood are the following: It is very resilient, easy to walk upon for the reason that it is 90 per centl, vood fibers.

It is skid-proof even when damp or entirely covered with water. It is termite and rat-proof, also acid and flame resistant.

Roc-Wood, the low cost flooring that goes on with a trowel, is compounded according to a patented formula developed after years of experimentation. Basically it is made of the hardest kind of hardwood fibers, chemically treated and bonded together with a practically indestructible plastic binder. It hardens by chemical action, not by evaporatlon.

Further particulars can be obtained from Galleher Hardwood Company, Los Angeles, phone Pleasant 2-3796.

4ondh Pfywood Number Celebrat es Cafifornia's Leadership in Plywood Consumption

This is the fourth annual Plywood Issue of THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT.

And the reason we make a specialty of it is simply to keep on driving home to the industry that California has alrn'ays been from the start, and will no doubt continue to the end, to be the champion plywood consuming state. More so now than ever.

We would like the plywood mills to understand that if it were not for California a whole lot of plywood mills would have no market for their product.

We want the plywood industry to knorv that not only does California consume more plywood than any other state, but that it consumes more plywood per capita than any other state, and also that it buys and uses a broader range of plywood mill produ, cts than any other state.

To make it short, California is far and away the most plywood minded portion of the country. And so, once every year on our birthday (July first is the 28th birthday of THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT) we devote the major part of orr rnagazine to doing a little bragging about California from a plywood standpoint.

Let us at this point acknowledge our gratitude to the Douglas Fir Plyrvood Association, and to Harold C. Dixon, its energetic and cooperative publicity man, for assistance in presenting the subject of plywood to our readers.

On another page we are presenting in full a table showing where every foot of Douglas Fir plywood went last year, giving the totals both in feet and in percentages. We think our readers generally will find these figures and facts interesting.

California leads the pack with a total consumption of 267,504,962 feet, or 14.94 per cent of the total plywood production.

New York, with its huge population and mighty building industries, was second with 148,708,744 feet, or 8.31 per cent of the total production. Washington, whose huge door plants are outstanding plywood users was third with 144,441,369 feet, or 8.07 per cent of total. Illinois was fourth with 136,532,647 feet, or 7.63 per cent of total. Pennsylvania vvas fifth with 91,546,292 feet, or 5.11 per cent. Indiana was sixth with 81,239,612 feet, or 4.53 per cent. Texas came seventh, leading the Southern states by a wide margin, using 72,498,303 feet, or 4.05 per cent of total, an increase of 40 million feet over 1948. Ohio was close behind Texas, then in close order followed Michigan, New Jersey, Oregon, Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Missouri, and Florida.

Following 'Iexas in the South came Florida with 38,392,457 feet, while the two Carolinas combined consr.lmed 33,270.854 feet.

From Joe Weston, plywood authority, comes the statement that 'ivhile the average American consumes 12.4 square feet of plywood annually, California consumes 26.5 square feet per capita, and that furthermore California buys and uses all grades and kinds of plywood, not just certain items, the percentage of sales by plywood types and grades in California being very close to the industry production figures. In other words, California buys everything the plywood industrv makes. "Balanced sales" they call it.

In 1949 the San Francisco trading area had the largest per capita sales of plywood of any part of the state or country, 31.5 square feet per person.

Favorable lreight rates are, of course, partially responsible for California's continued huge consumption of Douglas Fir plywood. But the major idea is simply that California builds more beautifully and more variedly than any other part of the country, and the big and beautiful plywood boards lend themselves not only practically but enchantingly to such improved methods of building and building decorations.

California naturally likes plywood, and the things that can be done r,r'ith it. It r,r,'as California, beginning with the San Francisco Exposition in 1938 where eleven million feet of plywood r,vas used in building construction, that has taken the lead in the development of ways, means, and ideas for newer, better, and continually increasing use of plywood. With every year that passes this state devises and improvises more methods for ,cutting and sawing plyrvood into building shapes. Another outstanding factor is the fact that nowhere else is plywood distributed as well as in California. There are plywood storehouses and warehouses everylvhere, well stocked at all times with a variety o{ items for the building trade to select from. No lumber dealer is far arvay from a quick source of plywood supply. No other material is better merchandised.

The beauty, the versatility, the practicability, and the developing uses of the product, appeal to California, and California reciprocates.

Yes sir, California's claim to the plywood consuming championship is more outstanding today than ever before. To make the plywood industry understand the fact is the main object of this special issue.

Living Room lTilh A Garden

Faced with the problem of creating extra living space to accommodate the needs of his growing family, Architect Whitney R. Smith made extensive use of Douglas fir plywood and plate glass to add a large, multi-purpose, gardenliving room to his Los Angeles home.

Situated in an April-like garden planted 40 years ago, this striking plywood addition to an older home creates an intimate link between house and garden by achieving an

easy, comfortable transition between indoors and out.

Physically, this is accomplished by having the floor of the room at the same level as the garden which surrounds the room on three sides. Convenient access between room and garden is afforded by full-glazed double doors. Thus, a person going from house to garden steps through a wide doorlvay with no change in level and no distracting threshold. The effect is heightened by extending the concrete slab rvell beyond the limits of the room out into the garden.

Visually, the slender supports combine with ceiling-high rvindows, which are inserted between ceiling and soffit, to permit a smooth, unbroken flow of plywood paneling from the room outward, thus extending the apparent limits of the room by the length of the enclosed outdoor living area.

The dining area, which is raised 15,, above the floor of the rest of the room, is adjacent to a planting of ferns. Forming the view from the dining area, this planting, which is softly lighted from above by a translu, cent skylight, is cleverly nestled in a U-shaped area between the older portion of the house and the new room.

Half-inch Exterior type fir plywood was specified for the walls of this striking garden-living room area. fnasmuch as a single thickness of plywood constitutes the wall, plywood with both surfaces (EXT-DFPA.A-A) of A veneer was specified. Such panels have high appearance faces on both sides; in this instance one surface being seen as siding and the other as interior paneling. For the glass areas, rf" plate was chosen.

The plywood panels are fastened on the inside of 4', x 4,t posts, 4' o.c., except in the room corners where the posts are2' apart. Joints between the plywood panels, which only appear on the interior walls because they coincide with the 4" x 4" posts on the outside, are V-grooved ,by beveling panel edges and set in mastic.

The plywood panels and plate glass sheets are fitted top and bottom into a continuous rabbited sill at floor and 7, levels. Because of the fact that standard 4, x 8, plywood panels were used, there was a one-foot long piece left over from each sheet. Architect Smith made good use of these extra pie.ces by using them for shelving and built-ins.

The ceiling of the room, which slopes gently upward toward the garden, is covered with /s,, Interior plywood of the PlyPanel grade; panel edges all closely butted. The soffits are also /s" plywood, but are Exterior type, PlyShield grade. The roof is covered with a mixture of grey, green and white gravel on top of.2" T&G boards over wood

Complementing the "living room with a garden theme,,' both interior and exterior plywood walls are painted a pleasing grey-green, with a white lead and oil paint. The plywood ceiling and soffits were given a light stain finish in order to subdue the green yet retain the natural beauty of the wood. The ceiling was given a coat of rvhite paint which was wiped to the desired grain show-through before it dried and then covered with clear shellac. The plywood soffits were given the same light stain finish ,but, because the surface was exposed to weather, a protective coating of clear varnish was applied.

This award-rvinning California residence was designed by Architect Gordon Drake for one couple, built by another and lived in by a third: Mr. and Mrs. George Spillman.

Although economy was of prime importance, this bold contemporary structure, which employs Douglas fir plywood as a structural diaphragm for floor and roof, and as .a structural skin for walls, is not a watered-down, economy version of a home the owners "would like to have but can't afford." Instead, it frankly concentrates on essentials, eliminates frivolous "extras," making a virtue of the straightforlvard economies afforded by plyrvood and ingenious design.

The site is an inexpensive sloping canyon lot west of Los Angeles, with a building area only 35, wide and 30, deep. The buildable area rvas shut in by trees so Architect Drake, 'lvho now varies his practice betrveen Carrnel and San Francisco, Cal., decided to build the house on tr,vo levels. The upper level rises high into the tree tops for sun, view and privacy. The main floor is only 15, by 39'. Planning calls for partitions, much glass and a large balcony to extend its apparent dimensions.

The interior walls are paneled with fir plyr, vood nailed to the fr:rrning members. Joints betrveen panels are covered with 37(" x /1" wood battens. The interior plywood walls were given a pleasing light stain finish in keeping with the light, airy feeling of the house. Panels were resinsealed; given a coat of grey paint, rviped to the desired grain shou'-through, and finally waxed.

The exterior plyrvood rvalls are finished with two coats of resin sealer, followed by a deep, bronze-red stain.

The upper level is two main rooms separated by a partition rvhich contains a book case and desk on the living room side, and a headboard for a double bed on the bedroom side; betr, veen the two is a sliding door. The bedroom opens into a tiny terraced garden.

All-Plywood Galifornia Home

Entrance to the upper level is from a landing leading from a wooden ramp that forms a bridge between house and hillside. The greater portion of the eastern wall is a series of glass doors that open onto an access balcony. The light from this glass r,vall is balanced by a band of high

The ingenious upper level balcony, .because of the precipitous slope of the lot is at ground level at one end rvhere it merges u,ith the paved bedroom terrace, and about 10, above ground at the other end. The balcony is enclosed with 3/s,, thtck Exterior type Douglas fir plywood fencing on both sides of 2,, x 4,, railing supports, capped by a 2,, x 4,, railing.

The kitchen area is separated from the living room by the brick fireplace. Shelves and counter built about the brick division and at one end of the fireplace rvall form a combination working-dining table that helps define living room and kitchen.

The lower level of the house contains a car port, and service area rvhich is separated from the garden by a large masonry pier containing an ash pit for the fireplace. A fireproof closet (2%' * 5l') lor rvater heater, meters, etc., also provides storage for patio furniture.

Douglas fir plylvood rvas chosen for large panel size and great structural strength, as well as beauty. The fact that plyrvood's size and strengtl.r were important in this home is attested by the fact that Architect Drake had to prepare an isometric drawing to convince the local building in_ spector that because of structural diaphragm action of the plyu'ood, and a unique joist and girder structural design, this seemingly frail structure t,as amply strong and would actually stand up in an area lvhere earthquakes are not uncommon.

The wood post and girder system employs 4,, x 1,, posts, 6'on center, strapped at the bottom to the {oundation and carrying through continuously to the roof system. On the

upper level, where permitted by door and window spacing, 7' x 4" studs are placed between Lhe 4,, x 4r, posts, 18r, on center. Between the posts, /g" Exterior type Douglas fir plywood is employed as a structural skin as well as siding. Panels are applied vertically, nailed and glued to the framing members. Joints are covered with narrow wood battens.

The upper floor system is carried on 2x6 beams that rest on two 7' x 8" girders that occur on either side of the posts. Five-eighth inch plywood, nailed to 2x6 joists, 6,, on center, forms the subfloor of the upper level. On the trnderside of these 2" x 6" joists, /s" thick Exterior plywood panels form the ceiling of the lower level.

The plywood subflooring is covered by Chinese matting on the inside; and covered with tightly drawn canvas on the adjacent balcony.

Roof deckin g is %" PlyScord sheathing covered by composition roofing. The plywood is applied over Z, x B, rafters, 12" or 18" apart. sf,, Exterior type Douglas fir plywood is used for soffits and nailed to the underside of the rafters.

78 Plants on Pacific Coast Producing Record Amount of Plywood

As this special Plywood Issue of THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT goes to press, 78 plywood plants on the Pacific Coast, under pressure of a "mighty thirst" for the product, are making plywood at a rate never before dreamed of. As one manufacturer reported, the mills are cutting every foot they can possibly produce, fitting their production plans to the market, and turning out a maximum quantity of most favorable items.

The Douglas Fir Plywood Association estimates at this moment that the 1950 production lvill reach a grand total of.2,200,000,000 square feet, as compared with 1,899,000,000 square feet for 1949, 1,9@,000,000 for 1948, and 1,630,000,0AO for 1947.

There are 10 plywood plants in operation in California, and one under construction and nearly ready to start. Four are Pine plants, one produces both Fir and Pine, 5 are strictly Fir producers, and one more Fir plant is under construction. There are 35 Plywood plants in Washington, 25 in Oregon, and 8 in British Columbia. Two of the B. C. plants are very small, one started just recently. British Columbia production for the past year totaled 312,458.000 feet.

Redwood plywood is being made at only one plant, that of the M and M Wood Working Company, at Eureka, California.

One interesting California plywood development is shown by the report of Shasta Plywood Inc., at Anderson, (Post Office at Redding) that it is now making a large part of its board from California Sugar Pine. Heretofore only incidental quantities of plywood have been made from that tree.

Pine plyrvood is being manufactured by the Calaveras Forest Products Corporation, San Andreas, California; the Fruit Growers Supply Company, Westwood, California; the Long-Bell Lumber Company, Weed, California; Shasta Plywood, Tnc., Anderson, California; Kalpine Plywood Company, Klamath Falls, Oregon; and the Timber Products Corporation, Medford, Oregon, make part of their board from Pine.

The following concerns are making Douglas Fir plywood in California: Coast Plywood Manufacturing Company, Calpe1la; Crescent Plywood Company, Crescent City; Flumboldt Plywood Corporation, Arcata; Industrial Plywood Corporation, Willits; and the M and M Wood Working Company, Eureka. Mutual Plywood Corporation, Eureka, has a Fir plywood plant nearly ready to start.

Shasta Plywood, Inc. Estimates 1950 Production at 48 Million Feet

Shasta Plywood, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of United States Plywood Corporation, had a production in 1949 of 46 million feet on a 3r(" rough basis. Of this 34 million was pine and 12 million fir.

Gene Brewer, manager of Shasta Plywood, estimates production for 1950 at 48 million, with 32 million being pine and 16 million feet fir. The pine production is divided equally between Ponderosa and Sugar pine. The fir is principally Douglas fir, a large part of which is manufactured into sheathing grades. It is Mr. Brewer's belief that this is the only plywood plant manufacturing Sugar pine plywood in any quantity. The bulk of it is made in 3/4" thickness for use as cupboard doors and cabinet fixture work. California pine is recognized as being highly desirable for enameling and paint work.

The production of Shasta Plywood, Inc., is distributed nationally through the sales offices of the United States Plyrvood Corporation.

Plywood with a Southern Accent

The development of the plywood industry in the South, while not spectacular, has been steady and is marked by great progress in improved quality of product and expansion of markets.

Thirty to forty years ago the industry consisted mostly of single ply veneer mills whose output was shipped to the older hardwood plywood mills in the northern and central states. in addition much of the product of these single ply veneer miils went into the box, basket and container field. Comparatively little plywood of any kind was made in the south at this time.

During the twenties and thirties the southern furniture industry developed very rapidly especially in the Carolinas. This growth of the furniture industry was accompanied by increased southern plywood production to supply this new industry. At first southern'plywood was manufactured primarily in the utility grades for use as drawer bottoms, chair seats, case backs, mirror backs, etc. As the southern furniture industry developed however, a greater percentage of high quality decorative panels were produced by the southern plywoods mills. These panels both veneer core and lumber core were faced r.vith native lvoods as well as mahogany, tvalnut, oak and the many other fine cabinet lvoods.

During this period the markets for southern plywood were exclusively in the furniture and industrial fields. These panels were made to purchasers' dimensions and shipped direct.

The war and post war years of the forties presented a challenge to the southern plywood industry for quality plywood in large quantities and in customary fashion this challenge r,vas effectively met. Production facilities of existing plants were improved and increased with the installation of new machinery and production techniques. At the same time ner,v mills were erected to help supply the increasing demand for plywood. It r,vas during this period that southern panel makers began manufacturing both large and small panels for distribution through warehouse and dealer channels. Although a great many southern mills are now equipped to produce panels 4'x8'in size, the industry generally favors the manufacture of smaller panels as these allow for better utilization of logs.

The tremendous expansion of the southern plywood industry during the past fifteen years has seen the installation of a large number of hot presses and the increased use of urea and phenolic resin glues. These glues have enabled the industry to enlarge its markets and continually improve the quality of its products. IJrea resin glues are the most widely used adhesive in the southern plywood industry today.

The war years focused attention on quality control in the production of plywood and the southern plywood manufacturers were anxious that this control be set up and maintained within the industry. As a result, the Southern Plywood Manufacturers Association established a plywood testing laboratory in Atlanta, Georgia, to assist the industry in developing and maintaining desired quality of product. The success of this laboratory is evidenced by the continually increasing use of its facilities by the southern plywood industry.

Present plans of the Southern Plywood Manufacturers Association call for the early establishment of an inspection service for the benefit of the southern plywood industry and its ,customers. This service patterned after the highly successful inspection service of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association rvill be further proof of the sincerity of the southern panel makers to manufacture and sell quality products. This inspection service together with the association testing laboratory will be the groundwork for the establishment of a grade marking program for southern Hardwood plywood.

Further proof of the industry's long range view of its quality control work is noted in the establishment and maintenance of an exposure fence near Atlanta where unprotected samples of Technical and Type I Hardwood plyu.ood are .being subjected to long term weathering tests. Information developed from this fence will assist the industry in its manufacture of hardwood plywood intended for use where excessive moisture conditions will prevail.

The grading rules of the hardwood plywood industry are contained in Hardwood Plywood Commercial Standard CS35-49 (the latest revision). Copies of this standard are available at no cost from the office of the Southern Plywood Manufacturers Association, 728 West Peachtree St., N.W., Atlanta, Georgia.

This insight into an important but as yet little publicized aspect of southern plywood manufacture should be of interest to plywood users, dealers and specifiers in California and the other western states. Southern plywood is not a stranger in this part of the country, because the continuing demand of the California furniture and building industry for quality plywood has given southern panels an

opportunity to demonstrate those features which make it in such demand where a smooth finish is required.

The smooth texture of panels made from native southern hardwoods not only gives them a demand where lacquer, enamel and fine paint surfaces are required, but they are also excellent as a base for plastic overlays of all types. This feature of smoothness also creates a demand for these panels as a base for decorative and fine cabinet woods.

The fact that the southern plywood industry is geared to manufacture smaller, easily handled panels in standard or made to order sizes has been a sour,ce of delight to the small cabinet maker and hobby-shop enthusiast who need small quantities of smooth panels that can be easily transported and stored. These smaller panels also lend themselves to a wide variety of architectural treatments for use in interior wall paneling. Another interesting feature of plyrvood manufactured from native southern hardwood is that it can be easily stained to simulate more expensive r,voods such as mahogany and walnut.

Today the production capacity of the southern plywood industry is about 750,000,000 sq. ft. (%"-3 ply basis) and this is adequate to handle all normal demands for its products. Although a great deal of this production still goes to the furniture trade and industrial users, the industry is increasingly interested in the dealer trade where both large and small smooth surfa, ced panels are a profitable item to handle.

In designing his home, Francis made extensive use of Douglas fir plywood-both inside and out-combined with glass, brick and wood to produce a maximum amount of living space and convenience in a five-room home with an area of 1,320 square feet, plus porch and garage.

For both interior paneling and exterior siding, the ply'ivood panels \\rere scored horizontallv to produce sweeping horizontal lines and to conceal any apparent jointing. Blue, coral and a golden yellorv that n.ratches tl.re finish of the plywood paneling were used in accessories and fabrics to complete the pleasing color scheme.

The house is conventionally framed with 2" x 4 studs. With the exception of kitchen and bath, which are covered with asphalt tile, the concrete slab is covered with wall to 'rvall carpeting. Finish roofing is colored gravel.

Windorvs are planned to give a pleasing view of the surrounding garden. An 8'x9' bay window for front garden vien' is of stationary glass. It has louvered vents on either side and a 4' overhang. The south wall of the living room, which faces the outdoor living area, is also of stationary glass, except for a sliding glass door and screen at one end of the room and a ventilator casement on the other. The roof line is extended over the large glass areas to help define the outdoor patio as u'ell as to prevent summer sun from leaping into the room.

The living room and den are partially divided by a fireplace and low brick 'rvall. The floor plan affords a comfortable conversational grouping of furniture about the fireplace and permits convenient passage from one room to another rn'ithout having to cross a third. The living room and- bedrooms are clirectly accessible from the entrance area.

The dining area is next to the kitchen breakfast bar, which can be closed off by means of folding doors. The living room features an S-foot long built-in couch with

book-shelf side arm. Other built-ins include shelving under the bay rvindow. There are two fixed panels at either end of the bay window; one is suitable for large books, the other contains a radio speaker. A built-in screen, giving extra privacy to the dining area, which forms part of the entrance area, consists of a storage case basing, sideboard and radio-phonograph. The storage unit is topped with an indirect lighting tray that gives a soft illumination to the entrance and dining area.

P lrlrrroal P ",,tlar"rhfi"J Glen D. Bessonette

.This keen young plywood executive was born in Beaumont, Texas. He left there with his parents at the age of two and has never been back. His parents settled in Eugene, Oregon, and Glen went through grade school and high school there and attended the University of Oregon. In school vacations he did some work in sawmills and in a planing mill, and later spent some time in the Forest Service.

While at the University of Oregon he met his future wife, Mary Belle Fobes, daughter of the late R. A. Fobes, a well known lumberman of Los Angeles for many years. After leaving school Glen and Miss Fobes were married. They spent three years in Oregon, and moved to Los Angeles, where he became associated with Pacific Mutual Door Co. in 1937 as salesman and offrce manag'er. lle was named manager of this branch warehouse after the death of Mr. Fobes in 1942. He continued as manager of the Pacific N{utual branch until the fall of 1948, when T. F. Eckstrom, former president of Pacific Mutual Door Co. and he took over the Los Angeles branch. They formed a corporation in the name of Bessonette & Eckstrom, Inc., and have continued servicing the trade with house doors and plywood as in many years past, and with greatly increased facilities in their new warehouse and yard at 2719 Compton Avenue, Los Angeles.

I\[r. and Mrs. Bessonette have four daughters ranging in age from three to 15. The two older girls are attending school in Alta{ena, where the family makes its home. They have a summer home at June Lake in the High Sierra, where Glen engages in his hobbies of hunting and lishing, using a plywood boat, which he built himself, on the lake.

Mr. Bessonette is enthusiastic about the future of the plywood business. He is particularly well informed about it and its production problems, as he spends as much time as possible at the plywood mills in order to keep up with the latest developments.

Glen is a member of Hoo-Hoo. He and his wife are square dance enthusiasts, and belong to several dance clubs.

Application time and costs were slashed by one-third with Douglas fir plywood siding on this attractive northwest home, according to builder H. J. Cox of Eugene, Ore.

"Not only did the plyrvood siding permit construction economies," Cox said, "but after over three years, in an area marked by heavy rain, there is not a blemish of any kind. The plywood siding looks as good as the day the house r,vas finished."

Standard 4' x 8' panels, sr(" thick Exterior type plywood, were, cut in half to make two pieces 2'x8'. These were applied horizontally and nailed to the framing members. Vertical joints are closely butted. A sl-round moulding was used on all corners of the home.

Leqve Me Lcy

Prone on my back I greet arriving day, A day no different than the one just o'er; When I will be, to practically say, Considerable like I have been before. Why then get up? Why wash? Why eat? Why pray?

Oh, leave me lay !

I hadn't ought to want things different, To what transpires every single day; But I keep wishing that I could have went From this heart-rendering dullness, quite away. And yet, why move? There's always rent to pay. Oh, leave me lay.

Consenrcrtive

He had just graduated from a journalism course in college, and was starting out in a small way on a local newspaper in his home town. He listened attentively while the City Editor listed a whole lot of "don'ts" to be remembered in writing news. He said:

"Never write anything as a fact unless you are absolutely sure about it, or you may get this paper in trouble, and maybe into lawsuits. If you are not sure about an item you are reporting, use the words 'alleged,' 'reputed,' 'claimed,' 'rumored,' or 'it is said."'

The young man repeated those words over until he had them memorized, then went out looking for news. Here is the first bit of journalism he turned in:

"It is rumored that a party was given yesterday by a number of reputed ladies. Mrs. Smith, or so it is alleged, was hostess for the affair, and the guests, it is said, were all local people with the exception of Mrs. Jones, who claims she is fresh from Chicago. Mrs. Smith, the hostess, claims to be the wife of Joe Smith, who is rumored to be the president of an alleged bank in this reputed city."

Steeples

I never pass a steeple by, But I must stop a while and linger, And catch my breath to see the sky, Take hold of Prayer's tremendous finger; And lift my heart as high.

Heaven is surely not too far To reach to: any quiet town Is in God's keeping where you are; You reach up ! He reaches down ! As steeples touch a star.

Just Quoting

A ten year old kid who wanted a watch, had kept on nagging his father about it until the old man got angry and forbade his son to even mention the subject to him again on pain of a licking.

This very religious family always repeated Biblical quotations at the breakfast table on Sunday, and when this little boy's turn came, he quoted: "What I say unto you, I say unto all : Watch."

No Spirit Is Wiiling

A boy who puts his toys away, Who washes his neck and ears, Who goes to bed at nine o'clock, With no objecting tears; Who cleans his teeth, his room, his desk, And combs his hair down slick; A boy, I say, who does these things, Is mighty, mighty sick.-Merle Benyon

Thcrt's Whcrt Old Ccesar Did

When Caesar took an eastern ride and grabbed the Gauls of Rome,

What was the first thing Caesar did to make them feel at home?

Did he increase the people's loads, and liberty forbid? No ! He dug in and built good roads-that's what old Caesar did !

Did Caesar put the iron heel upon the foreman's breast? Or did he try and make them feel that Roman rule was best ?

What did he do to make them glad he came their lands amidst?

He built good roads, instead of bad, that's what Old Caesar did !

He built good roads from hill to hill, g6od roads from vale to vale,

He ran a good roads movement till Old Rome got all the kale.

He told the folks to buy at home, built roads their ruts to rid,

Until all roads led up to Rome-that's what old Caesar did. If any town would make itself the center of the map, Where folks would come and settle down and sit in plenty's lap,

If any town its own abode of poverty would ridJust let it start and build good roads-just like Old Caesar did.

New Products Asture Big Year For Lumber and Plywood Dealert

Neu' products, destined to vie in popularity with the already lvidel-v-accepted "Etch$'ood" plywood, are being developed by the Davidson Plyrvood and Lumber Company of Los Angeles, California, according to Jack Davidson, vice-president.

Among the nerv products being developed by Davidson's is "Sketchrvood," a new design in decorative, lowcost rvall paneling. Like "Etchu'ood," its famous predecessor, "Sketchrvood" is a three-dirnensional Douglas Fir Plywood, lvith many of the "E,tchwood" features, including raised and depressed, embossed heat-hardened surfaces that are'ivell adapted to a variety of finishing methods and treatmelrts. This r-ersatile panel will retail at extreme low cost and is norr'ar.ailable through Davidson Plywood and Lumber Company.

Other major distributed items swelling Davidson's Company's already large stock of quality building and decorative materials, are "Marlite Paneling," one of the firm's top sellers and \'Iengel doors and mouldings.

A stepped-up plan of dealer support, embracing free mats, iolders and printed matter, backed up by hard-selling trade and customer advertising, assures a big year for lumber and plywood dealers.

"Iltchrvood" still remains the sensation of Davidson's many r.naterials. In fact, according to Davidson, "Etchwood" is selling so fast that the plant is hard-pressed to fill its orders, and nerv distributors are being added only on a priority basis.

The reason for this is plain: only truly select clear grade "peeler" logs can be used in the fabrication of plywood used for "E,tchrvood." Such logs have, to date, been unusually scarce. However, northern mills report that a greater number of first-grade peeler logs are coming through. Thus, a higher percentage of clear grade plyrn'ood will soon be available for "Etchwood."

Undue importance is attached to wane and its actual effects are much less than is implied. For example the loss in strength due to wane one-fourth the width of two adjacent faces of a beam is only about 9/o and if such wane extended the full length of a beam the deflection of the beam under load would be only about 7/o greater than if no wane existed.

Interplanetary Study

If I were a chic, pink angel, Way up, up, up in the sky, And I chanced to look down, down, downward, When you were passing by, I'd put on my prettiest halo And preening my wings with delight, I'd choose a convertible saucer And dash away through the night.

At first I'd follow the pathway Of light from the golden gate, And I'd zoom past celestial landscapes With speed quite excessively great; But soon in the smoggy darkness And silence of outer space, My lodestone would still be your planet, And my guiding star, your face.

Arrived at my destination, I'd float for time here and there, Then park my convertible saucer Near a hydrant in Madison Square; Right soon I would find you sitting On a bench with your dog by your side,

New Type ol Plywood Panel

Development, manufacture and nation-wide distribution of a neu' type of plywood panel, Plankweld, has been announced by United States Plyrvood Corporation.

R. C. Wilcox, vice president, declared the demand for Plankweld has been so great that the company's new $1,500,000 plant at Orangeburg, S. C., is operating at capacity.

"The feature of Plankweld," Mr. Wilcox said, "is that it is finished at the factory and comes to the consumer through the local lumber yard ready for immediate use. It is easy for the home owner to install with metal clips, which are provided."

Plankweld, which is packed in bundles of ten l6t/4" x96" xr/4" is now produced in birch and oak.

New Stc-Lock Shingrles

New to the Celotex line of asphalt roofing products are Sta-Lock double coverage shingles which have an interlocking design. To demonstrate the interlocking design of the shingles Celotex has made available a kit of die'cut cards in the shape of actual shingles. Also available are envelope enclosures describing the shingles in detail.

And in honeyed words I would tell you That for you, I had taken the ride.

Your dog would rear back on his haunches, And utter a yelp of dismay, Then howling, he'd streak through the landscape To be gone for a year and a day. You, too, would stare in horror, At my halo, my wings and me, And then, how I grieve to admit it ! You, too, would give tongue and fee.

So I think were I an angel, Way up, up, up in the sky And if I were looking downward And you chanced to be passing by, I'd go right on polishing halos

And preening my beautiful wings, For angels get simply nowhere When they meddle with mundane things.
