The Davidson Plywood & Lumber Company, San Francisco, which does a wholesale business of importance in the Northern California area, has been in the capable hancls of Bob Grant since April 15. He has been managing the warehouse located at 1150 Thomas Ave. in the Bay City since that date.

Grant has been associated with Davidson for the past five years in Southern California, as sales manager for. its big Los Angeles warehouse. He originally majored in engineering at the University of Maryland and served with the 15th Air Force in Italy during World War II. After his separation from Uncle Sam, he settled in Los Angeles and went rvith the Minnesota Mining & Manufacturing Co. as a saiesman there. He spent several years in that and became associatecl with Plywood Los Angeles, Inc., prior to joining Davidson. He is married and has a son.

Forest Fire Prevention Drive Brought Less Loss in | 953

Forest fire prevention campaigns paid off last year with an 18 per cent decrease from 1952 in the number of forest fires, the U.S. Department of Agriculture said. This record is outstanding, according to Richard E. McArdle, chief of the Forest Service, in view of the extremg drought in manv forest areas last year.

Forest Service fielcl offices, state foresters, the Soil Conservation Service, the Department of the Interior and the Tennessee Valley Authority reported a total of 154,16C forest fires ciuring 1953-the lowest number since 1946, when there were wartime restrictions on travel. This is much lower than the 210,000 average for the five years before the present state and federal cooperative forest fire prevention carnpaign began.

Featuring Smokey the Bear, this campaign has been featurecl by public service advertising time and space clonated by American business and industry through the Advertising C.runcil. 1-his advertising was valuecl at $7,000.000 in 1953.

'fhis campaign and the Keep Green forums, lvhich are sponsored by the states in cooperation with the timber industries, have made people increasingly aware of the neecl for forest fire prevention. Through public cooperation, mancaused fires have decreased-|4l,632 in 1953 as compared to 180,265 ]n 1952.
