2?-Sawmills in the Douglas fir region of Oregon and Washington produced 4,109,429,Om bd. ft. of lumber in the first six months of 1948 to top 7947 first half output by over 37 million feet, according to H. V. Simpson, executive vice president of West Coast Lumbermen's Association.

Portland, Oregon, July

June u'eekly average production was 135,261,000 bd. ft., a drop of four million weekly below May sawmill totals, due, Simpson pointed out, to flood waters throughout the Columbia basin which closed a number of large producing mills. Most flood-damaged sawmills are now back in operation, after a five week shut down.

Principal concern of West Coast lumbermen today is a threatened freight .car shortage u'hich may slow down production during the late summer, Simpson said. The lumber executive was still optimistic that the 1948 West Coast lumber output would top last year's record 8,344,000,000 bd. ft. He assured the nation's construction and home building industry of an ample supply of constrnction grades of Douglas fir and West Coast hemlock to meet all their requirements.

The weekly average of West Coast lumber production in June was 135,261,000 bd. ft. or 87.0 percent of the 19421947 average. Orders averaged 134,566,000 b.f.; Shipments 138,452,000 b.f. Weekly averages for May were: Production 139,472,m0 b.f. (89.7Eo of the 1942-1947 average), orders 160,684,000 b.f., shipments 154,649,000 b.f.

Ed Fountain Lumber Co. Concentrates All Activities at So. Hooper St. Yard

Frank Bader, Lloyd Crandall, Dick Lloyd, Jess McCain, and Rex Workentine.

The yard has been completely paved. Sheds have been built to house the dry ldmber, and has sufficient mechanical eqiripment, lift trucks, carriers, etc. for quick service to dealers.

The company also operates a planing mill in the vicinity, which helps to speed up the dealers' special orders.

Reid and Wright Co. Starts Business in Fresno

A wholesale lumber and building material business has been organized by Reid (R. F. "Bob") and Wright (R. J. "Bob") Co., with headquarters at Fresno, Calif., and is now in operation.

In order to improve service to dealers, and to centralize all the firm's activities, the Ed Fountain Lumber Company, has rebuilt and remodeled the office building at 6218 South Hooper Avenue, Los Angeles 1. The sales office, shipping office, accounting department, and all other activities will be centralized at this address starting early in August.

To improve telephone service both of the old numbers have been discontinued, and the nerv telephone number will be LOgan 8-2331.

The company operates a 'ivholesale distribution yard at this address, catering to the lumber dealers of Southern California, handling all West Coast softrvoocls, for immediate delivery from stock. In addition carload quantities are shipped direct from the mills. A stock of pressure-treated lumber in specified lengths is also carried at the yard. Ed Fountain Lumber Company represents a number of Northern California and Southern Oregon sarvmills, and operates its own planing mill, located near Medford, Oregon.

The company consists of a partnership of Ed Fountain, Doyle Bader, Dale Burns, Carl Myers, and Allan Young.

In the sales department the following salesmen represent the company in the various Southern California territories:

The warel-rouse and office are located at 314O California Aveune. Telephone is Fresno 2-2243. The new company will handle a complete line of building materials including lvall board, plywood, wire products, roofing, paints, millwork, and specialty items. The lumber department will conduct a jobbing business in uppers of all West Coast species, and also direct shipments from mills.

The new concern will cover the territory from Bakersfield to Stockton, and both Reid and Wright will personally call on dealers in the area. The management emphasizes that it will be a strictly wholesale organization, serving only the retail lumber and building material dealers in the territory.

Both principals are well known. Robert F. (Bob) Reid for the past three years has been Fir-Tex representative in tl-re same area, and is well known to the trade. Previous to military service he was associated with Fir-Tex of Northern California in San Francisco. He is president of the San Joaquin Valley Hoo-Hoo Club. He was a flight officer in the U. S. Army Air Force during the war.

Robert J. (Bob) Wright for the past two and a half years has becn executive vice president of the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California. Prior to service in the U. S. Navy he served as field representative of the Association with headquarters in Fresno.

Among the manufacturers whose products will be carried rvill be The Paraffine Companies, and Fir-Tex of Northern California.

Federal Reserve analysts announce that at least one out of every four American families are living beyond their income this year. (NewsPaper headline)

**rr

When I read that headline my mind went back to a funny man named Artemus Ward, who, fifty years ago' was acknowledged to be our best humorous writer and speaker. Ward said that "a man should always live within his means, even if he has*to*borrow the money to do it"'

Garry Moore, a well known comic of today, remarks that "civilization is where a small part of the world takes reducing tablets, and the rest of the world starves." ***

The wbrld situation fails to make sense in a lot of ways' We are now sending countless millions of dollars worth of food to Europe, because we are told that Europe is starving. And every boat and plane that leaves this country for Europe is carrying Americans-tens of thousands of them-with well lined pockets, to Europe to play and visit and enjoy vacations. Who feeds them in those starving lands? Or are they going to eat the food we are taxing ourselves to send ""to"at * * *

I have just read where an American syndicate is getting ready to build a string of large hotels in Europe to take care of the American tourist trade, which gets bigger by the hour, and promises to be bigger than ever in history' Those moneyed tourists are going to be well fed over there, or they wouldn't go over. With what? Can starving nations support a great tourist trade and countless luxury hotels? If they can, do they need the billions we are in the act of giving them? It doesn't make sense. rlc {< *

Every list I read of super-:'ich Americans who are on their way to Europe to play, I wonder why they don't give the cost of the trip to those allegedly starving Europeans, and'stay home themselves? When I hear of this army of purse-proud Americans swarming over Europe on pleasure bent, and then read the tearful exhortations to all of us to help those millions of hungry and desolate women and children of Europe, I am compelled to the belief that some way our books are out of balance. Either Europe is NOT over-run with starving and pitiful people, or else it's a damn poor place for our idle rich to use as a play ground.

Going back to tr,. op.rli"j pJr.gr"pt, of this writing, r have not the slightest doubt that the government report that one fourth of all American families are living beyond

'their incomes this year, is an understatement. The percentage is probably far greater- as prices rise. In the old days when a customer pulled out a ten dollar bill in a food market the clerk would say: "Is this the smallest you have?" Now he u/ants to know if that is the biggest he has. A lady enters a food market. A clerk at the door says: "Don't you want a basket to shop in?" She says: "I don't need a basket-I've only got ten dollars." Multiply by millions daily, and you have the chief reason why incomes of so many Americans fail to cover expenses. ***

Again speaking of food, this time on an international basis. There is a newspaper editor in Los Angeles named Manchester Boddy,.who speaks and writes with much clarity. He made a talk the other day on the subject of ERP (European Recovery Program) and its proposal to help feed the world. He feels that the effort will fall short BECAUSE MAN HAS NEVER HAD ENOUGH FOOD. This is not just a matter of the moment. It is and has always been a permanent thing, this shortage of food. It is worse now than average, of course, but this has always been a hungry'world. "Two-thirds of the world's people are und.ernourished today," says Mr. Boddy. "Hdf actually are living close to the starvation line."

*:1.t

Then he goes on to tell about it. "Postwar food production for 1946-7 was 7 per cent less than prewar outPut; this, notwithstanding the fact that 200,000,000 more people live in the world than before the war-just ten years ago. It is the FACT of hunger in areas of Europe and Asia that causes hundreds of millions of persons to turn a deaf ear, a cold, unseeing eye, and an. unbelieving heart to our preachments about the 'American way of life' and the blessings of democracy. Even if the United States goes all out to remedy this situation, it will be impossible to do so. Cold, unsympathetic facts are dead against us."

*{<{<

Mr. Boddy continues: "This does not mean that the human species is doomed to destruction' .All nature presents an irresistible movement toward balance. We. of this generation, are caught in that movement; a REACTION to science and industrialization that characterized the movement in which our immediate forefathers lived their lives. There are stormy seas ahead and the mariner who neglects putting his craft in order because he thinks American aid to the old rrorld will calm the seas, is doomed to bitter disappointment and*distress."

And Mr. Boddy draws these thoughtful conclusions: (Continued on Page 8)

"The success of the (ERP) plan, depends entirely on two considerations. 1-Can we produce and ship things to the ERP states according to schedule, and remain politically and economically stable? 2-Since ERP dollars remain in the United States-while the things they buy go out-can we remain financially solvent? In short, can the United States stand the strain? The nation's leading economists and certainly her leading Republicans and Democrats say 'yes.' But it will be a strain; whereas NO ERP WOULD MEAN WORLD CHAOS AND RUIN. So we begin our journey into the unexplored, admittedly hazardous era called ERP. Probably it will be the greatest international adventure of modern times."* *

It seems to me that Mr. Boddy's strong statement of the international situation justifies my presenting it to my readers. There is nothing more vital to consider in the world today, and the quoted remarks give a thinker something substantial to mull *orl.f;. *

Dr. Robert G. Sproul, President of the University of California, made a recent graduation address, and mostly he talked about the Russian threat to world peace and security. He said he could scarcely distinguish any difference between Soviet Russia today and Germany of the prewar period when Hitler was bursting with military power. Ffe remarked: "Indeed, as one compares the rise of Nazi power with recent coups of the Communist Party in Europe and Asia, there is a natural temptation to pick up one's hat and leave the theatre, for if this isn't where we carne in, there must certainly be unnecessary repetition in the plot." And President Sp-:oul reached this conclusion about Communism today: "The end he seeks justifies any means that circumstances dictate. To a Communist, NO ACT IS A CRIME WHICH IS COMMITTED IN THE NAME OF COMMUNISM." *

I infer that President Sproul would hardly agree with President Trumar with regard to old Joe Stdin, the heart and soul of the foul thing called Russian Communism. For Truman recently said in public with regard to the Dictator of the Soviets: "Good old Joe. I like Joe."

t< {< ,!

The warmth, the beauty, the versatility, the workability,

the usefulness of wpod, have been testified to in song and story since the earliest days of civilization. The United States has led all nations in the use of wood. One of the most outstanding examples of room decoration in wood is the Common Room in the Isadore Strauss Memorial Dormitory at Harvard University. This is a White Pine room in which the wood carvings cost $36,000.

rk*t<

Lumbermen in any branch of the industry, should make it a rule whenever the opportunity presents, to explain to laymen who do not know them, the facts about the cutting of commercial trees. For there are still plenty of intelligent people who do NOT know these facts, and who still feel sentimentally that trees should NOT be cut down, but should be allowed to stand, things of shade and beauty, forever.

t<*{.

Never fail to explain the facts when you meet such people. Tell them that cutting trees is like cutting flowers; if you don't cut them while they are in bloom, they soon wither and fade. Tell them that trees are just a crop, that grows, matures, deteriorates, and then decays; and that they should be cut while still at the height of their usefulness. Otherwise they die, lose their strength and commercial value, and mankind loses their great commercial value and services. Cut into commercial products, trees protect and serve man and his possessions for generations. There is no more common-sense and justifiable business on earth than the commercial cutting of trees. Be sure and get that thought home to those who do not understand. A modern forest goes on forever. Cutting trees at regular intervals, and protecting the younger and growing ones, means perpetual forests-perpetual lumber.

Adopt Trade Name ol "Y erigr"de"

Redwood shingles, which have been manufactured in California since 1832 primarily for the California trade, are now to be produced under the supervision of a trade association-the Redwood Shingle Association.

Frank Tehan of Tehan & Reese, Fortuna, association manager and chairman of its board of trustees, has announced adoption of the trade name "Verigrade." He said more than twenty-five of the mills are scheduled to use uniform labels bearing the trade name on shingle bundles produced by them.

Karry of Rio Dell, California, who has been identified with the shingle industry for 45 years. Headquarters of the group are at Fortuna, and a San Francisco office is maintained at 55 New Montgomery Street, San Francisco.

In addition to Mr. Tehan, the board of trustees is made up of the following: A. C. Gibson, Boonville; Wiley Edmundson, Klamath Shingle Company, Klamath; F. B. Swartzel, Swartzel & Swan, Miranda; J. A. Christensen, Beatrice; and Fred Powers, Powers Shingle Company, Garberville.

This is the first trade association formed solely by redwood siingle mill operators. In 1935 the California Redwood association established a Redwood Shingle Bureau for some of its members producing shingles, but its active promotion of the shingle industry was discontinued a few years later.

The Redwood Shingle Association is now making plans for an advertising program and greater dealer cooperation. A monthly news letter is one of the projects being given consideration.

Hoo-Hoo Reports Record Yeir

With the announcement by International Secretary B. F. Springer that Hoo-Hoo has doubled its membership and that the number of clubs has more than doubled in less than two years, Supreme Nine officials will report at the 57th Annual Convention that the Order is in thriving condition.

"Of even greater importance than this encouraging growth is the fact that Hoo-Hoo has worth-while objectives and a definite program which meet the needs of the times," says R. E. Saberson, Snark of the Universe, rvhose term expires at the forthcoming Convention, to be held at the Biltmore Hotel, Los Angeles, September 6-9. "If Hoo-Hoo will accept its serious responsibilities and put to r,vork in the lumber industry the concepts found in its Code of Ethics, there is no reason why its grorvth should not continue at an even more rapid rate."

With 6,000 members norv listed in the Black Cat roster and clubs {unctioning in 50 cities, preliminary organization work was started in at least another 50 areas during the past year.

Organization 'rvork has been carried on aggressively in Texas, Florida, Washington, Orqgon and California. In Texas, Vicegerent Lynn Boyd has i5 clubs and 1,000 members as his goal, rvith clubs already establisl-red at Amarillo, Wichita Falls, Fort Worth, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and Houston. John Dolcater, Vicegerent for Florida, holds the record for the largest number of nen' members and reinstatements'in one year rvith Concats at Tampa and Jacksonville. A. J. Daley, Tacoma, Vicegerent for Wash-

ington; Ed Hoener, Portland, Vicegerent for Oregon; and Carl C. Crow, Portland, Supreme. Custocatian, have put the Pacific Northwest solidly on the Hoo-Hoo map with clubs at Tacoma-Olympia, Everett-Bellingham, Yakima, Longview, Portland, Lebanon-Sweet Home, Eugene and Medford. LeRoy H. Stanton, Supreme Junior Hoo-Hoo, has reactivated or established clubs in California at San Bernardino, Fresno, Santa Ana, Nevada City, and at Phoenix, Artzona; Salt Lake City, Utah; Albuquerque, Nerv Mexico, also in his jurisdiction.

Other recently organized clubs include Denver, Colorado; Tulsa-Oklahoma City; Duluth and St. Cloud, Minnesota. Three Association Secretaries were instrumental in helping Hoo-Hoo to get under way again in the SouthTed Lemmons, Mississippi; E. M. Garner, the Carolinas; Harris Mitchell, Virginia-with Concats at Biloxi, Charleston and Roanoke.

It has been Snark Saberson's idea that Hoo-l{oo can best function in much the same manner as Service Clubs (Rotary, Kiwanis, etc.), By meeting together regularly, the different groups not only become better acquainted but more familiar rvith each other's problems. He has consistently advocated the need in the lumber 'industry for cooperation, loyalty, better understanding and a wider application of the principles of the Golden Rule featured prominently in the Hoo-Hoo Code of Ethics. Under his regime a short dignified induction ceremony has largely supplanted' the traditional ritualistic initiation, although the latter still is available for clubs equipped with trained degree teams and the facilities to put it on properly.

Delegates n,ill elect members of the Supreme Nine for the coming year at the Los Angeles Convention. The nominating comtrittee is made up of one member from each of the nine jurisdictions, which meet in advance and decide upon their choice. The Snark has announced he will follorv the recommer.rdations in appointing the nominating committee rvhich in turn rvill select its chairman.

Extensive plans are being made by Los Angeles HooHoo to entertain the visiting delegates and advance reservations indicate a large attendance.

Short Training Courre for Retail

Lumber Personnel

Orrie W. Hamilton, Los Angeles, secretary-manager of the Southern California Retail Lumber Association, announces that tentative arrang'ements have been made with the University of Southern California to conduct another Short Training Course for Retail Lumber Personnel commencing with the Fall College Term, on September 13, 1948, providing the dealers demonstrate their interest by encouiaging a sufficiently large enrollment to warrant the undertaking

Plans call for conducting either day classes or evening classes, depending entirely on the preference of members and prospective students.

The course will require approximately 160 class hours' If the course is given during the daytime it can be completed in 6 weeks providing we maintain a 5l hour class schedule, five (5) days per week. If the course is given during the early evening, however, it will require approximately 22 weeks to complete if the class hours are maintained. at 2l hours three nights per week'

The course has been approved by the Veterans' Administration for training of veterans under Public Larv No' 346. This means that the Veterans' Administration will pay sustenance for a "daytime course" in the amount of $120.00 per month for veterans having more than one depend6nt, or $105.0O per month for veterans with one dependent, or $75.00 per month for veterans having no dependents. If this course is conducted during the evening, three nights per lveek, hor'vever, and the veterans complete

a minimum of 7 class hirurs per week, they would be entitled to only one-fourth of the monthly sustenance allowance shown above.

Besides the monthly sustenance, a tuition fee not exceeding $50.@, and books, supplies and equipment not exceeding $25.00 is available through the Veterans' Administration for veterans taking this course who qualify.

'rThe Hoffco News" Is New House Orgcn

N'ew competitors of THE CALIFORNIA LUMBER MERCHANT keep bobbing up in the lumber industry. The latest friendly organ of that sort is "The lloffco News," a two-page house organ of The Earl Hoffman Company, of Los Angeles. The News is made up of interesting bits of reading such ps building and construction facts and figures, personal items concerning lumber folks, a list of lumber offered for sale with prices attached, and a few good gags.

No notice is given as to the frequency of the new house organ, but the Merchant bids it welcome' The Earl Hoffman Company is that business partnership of veteran Earl Hoffman, and Jim Magee, who operate a place of business at 6O15 South Citrus Avenue, Los Angeles. Two good guys, and a good little news sheet.

Religion

And an old priest said, Speak to us of Religion. And he said: Have f spoken this day of aught else?

Is not religion all deeds and all reflection, and that which is neither deed nor reflection, but a wonder and a surprise ever springing in the soul, even while the hands hew the stone or tend the loom?

Who can separate his faith from his actions, or his belief from his occupations?

Who can spread his hours before him, saying, "This for God and this for myself ; This for my soul, and this other for my body?"

All your hours are wings that beat through space from self to self.

He who wears his morality but as his best garment were better naked. The wind and the sun will tear no holes in his skin.

And he who defines his conduct by ethics imprisons his song-bird in a cage.

The freest song comes not through bars and wires.

And he to whom worshipping is a window, to open but also to shut, has not yet visited the house of his soul whose windows are from dawn to dawn.

Your daily life is your temple and your religion. Whenever you enter into it take with you your all. Take the plough and the forge and the mallet and the lute, the things you have fashioned in necessity or for delight. For in revery you cannot rise above your achievements nor fall Iower than your failures.

And take with you all men: For in adoration you cannot fly higher than their hopes nor humble yourself lorver than their despair.

And if you would know God be not therefor a solver of riddles. Rather look about you and you shall see Him playing with your children.

And look into space; you shall see Him walking in the cloud, outstretching His arms in the lightning and descending in rain. You shall see Him smiling in flowers, then rising and waving His hands in trees.

On Mcrnhood

Any fool can stir anger. Cowards, liars, hypocrites and thieves can stir enmity. Ye need no manhood in the broth of vengeance; its ingredients are on the lips of fools, and in the hearts of the proud whose pride is meanness, and of the mean whose pride is ill-faith.

But which of you can change anger into good-will? Which of you can change enmity into friendship? That one hath manhood. Aye, he useth it. The Lords of Life will not neglect to test him. He is worthy, that one, of the hammer-blows of Wisdom, on the anvil of life.

During the days of Hitler, the revolt against the new order in Norway spread to the chicken coop, as indicated by the following story: A Norwegian farmer who owned 30 hens was ordered to deliver their eggs to Gestapo headquarters. Two weeks later he wrote the Gestapo: "Your order was posted in. the hen house, so that the hens themselves could see it. When, in spite of this, they refused to lay, I had them shot for sabotage against the Third Reich."

Pacific Northwest Lumber Exports

Seattle-A marked decrease was shown both in June and the first six months of this year in waterborne lumber exports from Pacific Northwest ports in British Columbia, Puget Sound, Grays-Willapa harbor, Columbia River and Oregon coast, Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau figures show. Domestic shipments increased, however.

The June export total was only 85.8 million board feet, as against 108.1 million the previous month and 176.4 million during Jane 1947. The June 1948 export figure was the lowest since October 1946, according to the bureau's records.

Total waterborne exports during the first half of 1948 were 610.7 million board feet, compared with 901.1 million for the corresponding period of. 1947,510.9 million for the first half of 1946 and.785.7 million for a like period of 1939. Floods and the boomrnen's strike were blamed partly for the reduced log movements.

Waterborne lumber shipments from Oregon and Washington ports to U. S. destinations totaled 87.4 million in June, more than twice the 39.8 million figure lor June 1947. Oregon and Washington each shipped 43.7 million in June 1948. Domestic shipments for the first half of 1948 totaled 611.8 million, nearly twice the 321.5 figure f.or a like 1947 period, 1,150 million for the 1939 period and 302.9 million for 1946.

During June 19,{8 British Columbia continued to make sizable lumber shipments to U. S. destinations-7.5 million to Atlantic Coast points and 1.1 million to California. This

brings B. C. domestic shipments to 56 million for the first half of 1948, as against only 162,000 for the first six months of 1947 and another 24,000 for the rest of last year.

British Columbia exported 62.5 million board feet during June-about three-fourths of the month's total Pacific Northwest exports. This compares with 98.4 million exports for B. C. in June 1947. B. C.'s exports for the first half of this year totaled 395.1 million feet, as against 560.1 million for a like 1947 perioU.

Of B. C.'s June 1948 exports, United Kingdom received 38.1 million feet, Africa 13 million, Australia 5.6 million and China 2.3 million. Of Washington and Oregon's domestic shipments, 60.2 million went to the Atlantic Coast, 24 million to California, 1.4 million to Panama Canal Zc:ne, 862,522 to Hawqii and 7%),480 to Alaska.

FHA Title ll Home Financins

With the expiration of Title VI on April 30, there has been a swing .back to Title II insured financing for the construction of new dwelling units in the one- to fourfamily project group as evidenced by the months of May and June 1948, the period when only Title II was in effect, according to John E. McGovern, Los Angeles, director, Southern California District, Federal Housing Administration.

Title II,. the basic program of the FHA, which became operative when the National Housing Act was passed in 1934, has been in continuous use since that time. With the enactment of Title VI, the E,mergency Housing Program, Title II was pushed to second place because of the more liberal financing terms under Title VI, which were designed to encourage builders to quickly meet the housing shortage throughout the Nation.

During May and June of this year, 2,411 applications for the construction of approximately 2,628 dwelling units were received by the Los Angeles FHA office, covering new construction loans to be insured by the FHA under Title II, or approxima.tely three and one-half times the 694 applications received during the first four months of 1948.

In addition to the new construction applications received by the Los Angeles FHA office in this same two months period, 1153 applications for insurance of loans under Title II on existing properties lvere received. For the past four months there has been a steady substantial volume over and above the monthly volume for the two previous years. The 1947 monthly high was 468 applications for 541 units, and the 1946 high, 414 for 463 units.

Under both Titles II and VI, a total ol 14,937 dwelling units was placed under construction during the first six months of this year; or nearly two and a quarter times the 6,782 units started in this area during the first six months ol 1947, Mr. McGovern reports. Included in the six-month volume of starts for 1948 are 672 dwellings in the one- tofour-family group under Title II; 9,851 units in the oneto four-family structures financed under Title VI, Sec. 603; and 4,414 in rental housing projects under Sec. 608, Title II.

This record volume of starts includes only those properties financed under Titles II and VI, for which first ,compliance inspections by the local FHA office have been made.

New Door Developed for Store And Commercial Entrances

The Eugene Extruded Metals Corporation, division of Southern California Glass Company, has developed a new Hollobilt "Slim Line" aluminum door for store and commercial entrances. The original Hollobilt door featured a satin alumilited frame 2l inches wide. The new "Slim Line" Hollobilt door has ll inch top and side rails, providing greater visibility and smartness of design.

Architects and designers of today's modern stores and buildings are planning store fronts and entrances to achieve better vision, greater light and more effective merchandising display. Hollobilt aluminum doors, according to Paul Jeffries, general manager of Eugene Extruded Metals Corporation, accomplish these objectives because they are engineered to provide a maximum area of polished plate glass with a minimum of supporfing trim.

"The Hollobilt door is designed and engineered to permit architects and designers greater latitude and imagination in building plans," said Mr. Jeffries. "Store and commercial building entrances with the eye-catching appeal and utility that only large areas of plate glass can give are possible with the Hollobilt "Slim Line" aluminum door."

Hollobilt "Slim Line" aluminum doors feature: Polished plate glass, ll inch satin alumilited finish-narrow, but with great strength, smart, modern design, extruded tubular aluminum construction, light weight, easily installed

In the Douglas fir region operators provide for the immediate restocking of cut-over timberlands by leaving seed trees in or adjacent to the harvested areas.

The inspection of lumber is a visual determination of the quality of the product. In the vigual application of the characteristics and limiting provisions of a grade, it is to be expected that.there will be some variation of opinion between inspectors. Experience has proven that a variation of 516 in the judgement of inspectors is a reasonable variation, and this tolerance has been adopted as standard practice in the lumber industry.

Since its organization in December, 1902, the National Lumber Manufacturers Association has served as a national voice of the lumber manufacturing industry.

The greatest threat to Tree Furrn. and all other forest lands is fire. Private forest landowners are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars yearly to restore land damaged as a result of carelessness with fire. Fire protection' equipment on Tree Farms is used primarily for the intensive protection of the individual Tree Farms but is available elsewhere in the event of catastrophe. \

The most satisfactory moisture content of wood at the time of gluing is that which, when increased by the moisture of the g1ue, approximately equals the average moisture content that the glued member will have in service.

In gluing thick pieces this relation can be attained, but in gluing veneer or other thin pieces the moisture added by the glue frequently exceeds the moisture content of the wood in service. Under the latter conditions the wood cannot be dried enough before gluing to avoid redrying of the glued products afterward.

The amount of moisture added to wood in gluing varies from less than 1 per cent in lumber to 45 per cent or more in thin plywood. The thickness of the wood, the number of plies, the density of the wood, the glue mixture, and the quantity of glue spread all affect the increase in moisture content of the wood.

\(/ood Research Laboratory Facilities Enlarged

Washington, D. C.-Growing recognition of the value of research to the lumber industry has resulted in an expansion of plant and facilities of the Timber Engineering Company wood research laboratory.

Recent completion of a (fr' by 60' one-story addition to the laboratory makes possible additional services for the manufacturers and users of lumber and wood products. The laboratory, established in 1943, is engaged in product development and research on the chemical, physical, and mechanical properties of ivood.

To expand markets for lumber, Timber Engineering Company pioneered to gain recognition of wood as an engineering material and developed the Teco connector system of rvood construction. Facilities at the lab include equipment developed especially for testing full scale 50' trusses-the only equipment of its kind in the country.

To improve the mechanical .ivear of railway ties is a new project that is jointly sponsored by associations of lumber manufacturers and the Association of American Railroads.

Another far reaching study just started is aimed at de-' veloping an economical and practical means of decreasing the shrinking and swelling of construction lumber and other wood products.

Finding economic uses for low-grade and waste hardwoods is a major project underway at the laboratory. Development of a hardwood pulping process has formed the basis for the production of many valuable new products out of material formerly considered unusable.

Ijsers of rvood office furniture will' benefit from such Teco developments as burn and stain-proof desk tops and non-marring desk legs.

The new laboratory building itself is a tribute to the strides in rvood engineering resulting from industry research. it is built with glued laminated timber girders (9%" *24f" x 20') which rvill support a second floor r,vhen further expansion is desired. The girders are built up of 15 laminations of l-5/8" material and .nere produced by Rilco Laminated Products, Inc., Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania.

The Timber Engineering Company, an affiliate of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, has oflices at 1319-18th Street, N. W., \Vashinston, D. C.

Being extremeiv flexible, it can be laid over any type of base since it rvill conform to uneven floor surfaces and rvill absorb the normal play of wood floors, thus being considered excellent for either new work or remodeling.

"Ease of nlaintenance" Mr. Stiger points out, ,,makes it desirable in office, reception rooms, schools, hospitals, and other similar institutions. Its grease and oil-proof charac_ teristics make it adaptable to kitchens, restaurants, bakeries, drug stores, and various types of light manufacturing areas."

An illustrated brochure entitlecl ,'permalite, The Nelv Plastic Floor Tile" is now available in full color, including large reproductions of the individual marbleized colors in which the product is manufactured. A copy .n,ill lte sent on request to Johns-Manville, 22 East 40th Street, Nen, York 16, N. Y.

Eldredge Miller, Sales Promotion Department, states that the denrand for this product has so far exceeded the present manufacturing capacity that it rvill not lte immediately available in the Pacific Coast area.
