Colgan Resigns As National Leader -
Kendall Takes Job Temporarily
Washington, D. C., July 9-R. A. Colgan, Jr., has resigned as executive vice president of the National I-umber Manufacturers Association. He is leaving July 11 for California to manage 600,000 acres of forest property of Shasta Forest (iompany, with headquarters at Redding, but will return to Washington in September to complete some pending assignments.
Mr. Colgan came to NLMA in 1945 from Chico, California, where he was production manager of the California timber and lumber operations for the Diamond Match Company. It.was under his direction that 218,000 acres of the compan'."s California forest holdings lvere managed on a sustained yield basis and certified as a Tree Farm. Just prior to his quarter century of service rvith Diamond Match, he was forest assistant in wood research at the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory, Madison, Wisconsin.
A forestry graduate of Michigan State College in 1913, Mr. Colgan has been a lumberman for over 30 years. $ecause of his outstanding leadership in forest conservation,
Longshoremen Strike Setded
A longshore strike against all steam schooner operations on the Pacific Coast as of 3:00 p.m. on July 17 was announced by the fnternational Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union. The union is seeking an extra $1.00 an hour for handling packaged lumber. The present wage for working lumber is $1.97 an hour.
Three lumber schooners were tied up at Los Angeles Harbor.
A settlement of the wage dispute rvas reached on July 25 in San Francisco. Basis of the settlement was a Zi-cent an hour bonus for stevedores handling packaged lumber.
Ole May, American Mailing Co., Los Angeles, ancl Mrs. May, returned from an enjoyable vacation to Hawaii on July 22. They made the trip over in the S.S. Cleveland and the return trip by plane.
he was named an honorary vice president of The American Forestry Association this year. He is also a member of the Society of American Foresters, a Director of the American Standards Association and Chairman of the Lumber Survey Cornmittee of the Department of Commerce.
The interests of the lumber industry have been greatly expanded under Mr. Colgan's guidance. He brought about a rvide-ar,r,ake attitude towards national affairs and stimulated a more active participation in the fight to preserve private enterprise. With his direction, NLMA has developed one of the most aggressive legislative programs of any American industry.
Mr. Colgan has been succeeded ternporarily by Harry T. Kendall, of St. Paul, Minn., Chairman of the Board of the Weyerhaeuser Sales Company, and for some time past a director of National. Mr. Kendall has agreed to help out in this important manner until the annual meeting of National next November, at which time the Board of Directors will act to filI the office permanently.

"About the time a youngster feels an irresistibie impulse to make a fool of himself whenever a female smiles upon him; when he's reached that critical stage in life's journey when he imagines that he knows much more than his father, he begins to doubt the religion of his mother. He shrewdly asks his Sunday school teacher who made God? He demonstrates by the aid of natural history diagrams that a large whale could in nowise swallow a small prophet-that if he did succeed in relegating him to its internal economy it were impossible for him to slosh around for three days and nights in the gastric juices without becorning much the worse for wear. FJe attempts to rip religion up by the roots and reform the world while you wait, but soon learns that he's got a government contract on his hands: that the man who can drive the Deity out of the hearts and homes of this land can make a fortune turning artesian wells inside out and selling them for telegraph poles. You can't do it, son. Religion is the backbone of the body social. Sometimes it's as unbending as a boardinghouse biscuit, and sometimes it's a bad quality of gutta percha; b.ut we couldn't get along without it. Most youths have to pass through a period of doubt and denial-catch the infidel humor just as they do the mumps and the measles; but they eventually learn that the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom."
* * -Wm. Cowper Brann.
f read the above fully fifty years ago and was so imLtessed with it that I have never forgotten it, and have reread it countless times since then; and reprinted it more than several.
But we are not going to ;.;* this column at this time to an extended discussion of the spiritual side of life, even though we know full well that it is much the most important need in our national life right now. It is the tremendous spirituality that shines through everything that General MacArthur says and writes that has always attracted me to him. In a time when sordidness unspeakable is the order of the day, he raises his head to look his God in the face, and speaks as other men lack the power to speak. All of his life he has heard the still. small voice that ever whispers to the soul of a truly great man. And thus inspired by his unflinching belief that, as they say below the border, he "walked with God," nothing that the little men could say or do could sway him from the path where, to his clear comprehension, lay his sacred private honor, and his even higher public duty. As stainless as the sword of the sentinel who guards the gates ajar,, is the
name and fame of Douglas MacArthur, who came back home and has shown us clearly the way great Americans should act, and speak, and write. With the unclouded vision of an imrnortal faith, he holds for us a beacon light.
Let us talk for a while tol", "Uo.ra the more sordid subjects of taxes, and money; two subjects that have every thinking American hanging on the ropes today. My favorite Washington columnist, Bill Henry, tells about a businessman who "looked the Secretary of the Treasury right smack in the eye, and said with cruel firmness, 'if f ran my business like the Federal government does, I would have been bankrupt long ago."' FIe does not relate what the Secretary said. Probably nothing, for all men outside the asylum know full well that any business of any kind run like the business of our government, would go down the slippery slide to bankruptcy faster than a jet plane with a tail wind.
Dr. Robert L. Johnson, President of Temple University, and Chairman of the Citizens Committee for the floover Report, issued a public statement just a few days ago, which echoed the recent speech by Senator Byrd, of Virginia, saying: "Our country is in greater danger today than at any time in its history because of the waste and extravagance in the government at all levels . The government is so full of duplications, inefficiency, and waste, and so bogged down in red tape it cannot be responsive to the kind of emergency we may find facing ourselves strddenly at any time."
In the medical prof.*"iorrlr.l, n"rr. learned that a human being can be fed poison in small but constantly increasing doses in such a manner that the human body gets used to them, and thus "forms a tolerance" for them, so that the enlarged doses do not harm. That's what has happened in this country with regard to the spending, or even wasting, of huge sums of money. A stated amount of money that not so long ago would have given the entire nation a case of screaming meanies, today causes not a ripple. The spending of a billion dollars today is not considered half as important as spending a million would have been a generation ago. The American public, like the Admiaistration at Washington, has not the faintest notion any more, what a billion dollars means.
I have an old lumber friend named Will Curry, living in the free and unafraid City of Waco, Texas, who has a nose for such things, being a scholarly fellow, and he sends me some terse figures on tlris subject, to wit, what is a billion

dollars. filere's what he says: If a man had started in business in the year A.D. (1951 years ago), with one billion dollars capital, and had managed his business so badly that he had lost one thousand dollars every day since he started, he would still be in business, and could continue losing one thousand dollars a day for another eight hundred years, before running out of cash.
*
That gives you a pretty fair measuring stick on a billion dollars. But you could enlarge those figures to giant size and hold them before the eyes of a lot of men in Washington, and it would impress them not in the least. Step by step we have built up this weird situation where government spending makes no impression on the spenders. We pick up a newspaper and learn that it is being proposed that we spend another block of billions for something or other, and nobody cares what. Some guy who knows as little about the really mysterious subject of money as a pollywog in a pool knows about the power of prayer, wants to spend eleventy-seven billion dollars. And he wants you to know that he doesn't mean just seventy-eleven billion; not on your life; he means eleventy-seven billion, and not a dime less.
And then some other ,* tln" probably couldn't command a salary of one hundred bucks a month for a business job if he were thrown off the political bandwagon, prates learnedly about inflation, about controls, about billions here and billions there, that must be raised by taxes to save the nation in this vital emergency.
I have been told by men in position to know that there are not ten men in the entire United States who can be said to actually understand money in all its ramifications, and its multitudinous confusing facets. There are certainly not ten men in this nation capable of understanding the present financial and economic situation in which this nation is now bogged down, money, debt, taxes, subsidies, infationary matters, the real meaning of controls, etc. Yet we hear an army of men orating learnedly on all these subjects and issuing ordeis and opinions thereon, who know no more of these things than a single-cell protoplasm on the ocean bed knows about*the science of trigonometry.
A battle over controls has been going on in Washington for some time past. The gang even demanded the authoritlr to license every business in this country, and thus be enabled to put anyone out of business who could not be controlled. I know a lot of able men of affairs in all parts of this country, and they seem to be of the unanimous opinion that the biggest need for controls is controls OF the government, rather than controls BY the government. If we could control the needless and unintelligent spending, the waste, and the inefEciency of government, we would be in a position where there would be no need of other ccntrols. They believe that it is extravagances, waste, and impractical management, that have created our present inflationary conditions. And that these things would be curable if admitted.
Necessarily, needless "n"*r* means needless taxes. We
have entered upon a preparedness program that, even if managed and directed in the best possible manner, will run into tremendous figures, astronomical figures in fact. Few people object to doing their fair share in financing that vital program. But every taxpayer has a right to expect and to demand that every possible dollar not needed for defense, be saved for the pocket of him who pays the bili. ft's going to be rough enough on him even though he gets a fair deal from government. Give the taxpayer a break ! And, don't think for a minute that he is now or has for a long time, been getting one: With the big burden bf the defense program settling down inexorably on his shoulders, he deserves a change.

..RUSSIA WILL FORCE THE UNITED STATES TO SPEND ITSELF INTO DESTRUCTfON," said Lenin, just before he died. Unwise and impractical men in this country are doing a lot to make the big Ruskie's prophecy come true. Lenin himself would no doubt chortle with unholy glee could he witness our present spending spree.
A man died just the other day who has given so much rich joy to so many people, that when I read of his going f sat for a long time to think about him. and to wish him well wherever he may be. His name was Egbert Anson Van Alstyne, and he died at the age of 73 in Chicago. No, f never knew him, but I owe him for millions of happy moments, and I am grateful. ffe was a writer of popular songs; the kind that ring in your heart, and live in your soul. He wrote over 500 songs. He wrote "In The Shade Of The Old Apple Tree. He wrote "That Old Girl Of Mine." lfe wrote "Pretty Baby," and "Memories," and "Old Pal Why Don't You Answer Me." He wrote "Sunshine and Roses," and "Your Eyes Have Told Me So," and "Drifting and Dreaming," and "The Little Old Church In The Valley," and "Pony Boy," and "Navajo," and "Afraid To Go Home In The Dark," and others I remember well. When f was a kid I have joined with groups of youngsters countless times to sing all those songs, adding my lousy tenor to the more or less harmonious discords of all those concerned. ff you, too, recall such happy memories from such tuneful ballads, join with me in a kindly thought for the man who did so much to make so many people happy.

The u'riter \vas so thoroughly thrilled and pleased in reading Jack's editorial on taxes in the Merchant, ctlrrent issue, that I felt impelled to write you and convey my sincere appreciation of the effort he is making to save this Democracy. Oak Flooring Manufacturers Hold Semi-Annual Meeting
Although home building dropped 16 per cent in the first four months of this year as compared with the first third of 1950, hardwood flooring demand reached an all-time high for the period, members of the National Oak Flooring Manufacturers' Association were told at their recent semiannual meeting at Memphis, Tenn.
Secretary Henry H. Willins reported that shipments from the nation's major producing areas totaled nearly 341 million board feet, a 10 per cent increase over the 309 million feet shipped in the first four months last year. Nonfarm dwelling starts meanwhile dropped from 412,000 to 348,000.
A substantial portion of the strong demand was due, Willins said, to the large carry-over of unfinished homes from 1950. He added, however, that the increase in shipments at a time of slackening home construction indicated that hardwood rvas becoming increasingly popular as a residential' flooring material.
"It is interesting to note," he said, "that in the first four months of 1950, the biggest year in the industry's history, shipments rvere equivalent to about 74I board feet per dwelling unit started. In the corresponding period this year tlrey have risen to 979 f.eet, an increase of 32 per cent."
A tapering off from this unusually heavy demand is anticipated, Willins pointed out, in view of the fact that home building in the remainder of the year is expected to drop even further behind its 1950 pace.
E
"The market for residential flooring probably will be smaller," he explained, "but the growing popularity of hardwood, particularly oak, indicates that it will gain a larger share of tl-re reduced market."
Among the meeting speakers introduced by President Milton Craft of Memphis was C. Arthur Bruce, vice-president of E. L. Bruce Co., and director of the NPA Lumber Division. Mr. Bruce reported that a cordial relationship exists between the industry representatives in the division and civilian and military authorities con'cerned with lumber industry problems.
George M. Fuller, Washington, D.C., vice-president of the National Lumber Manufacturers' Association, reported on current and prospective legislative developments affecting the lumber and hardwood flooring industries.
John W. Maher, Washington representative of the Association, discussed new F-HA regulations pertaining to installation of strip oak flooring over screeds in homes of concrete slab construction.
Association members, in a resolution approved unanimously, agreed to solicit support for the industry-sponsored Oak Wilt Research program. The program is designed to combat the disease which plant pathologists describe as a threat to the nation's oak timber.
Member companies of the Association account for approximately 70 per cent of the hardwood flooring output in the United States. Most are situated in the Southern and Appalachian regions, source of about 90 per cent of nation's total supply.

The designation of this sub-area as an enlargement of the San Diego area was made by Acting Administrator Edwin T. Gibson of the Defense Production Administration on reconmendation of DPA's inter-agency Committee on Critical Defense Areas.
Pursuant to this designation, and with the concurrence of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System, the Housing and Home Finance Agency announced that credit- controls will be relaxed on 200 additional units of housing to be built in Escondido and its environs to assist in providing housing for the civilian and military personnel employed in or stationed at Camp Elliott and the Miramar Navy Air Station. Credit controls had previously been relaxed for 6,000 units in the San Diego area.

Garage Door Design Competition Sets
New Architectural Trend
The future American residential scene may very well take on a new improved look with homes having garage doors of individual, integrated design instead of the familiar uniformity of blank \^'a11 areas which so often dominate the view.
This is the opinion of the eminent jurors rvho selected and announced winners of the $15O0 cash arvards garage door design competition co-sponsored by the magazine Arts & Architecture and the Tavart Company, Paramount, California, manufacturers of overhead garage door hardware.
Quentin Sternberg, 26, San Francisco architect, rvon the $1000 first prize for his design in lr'hat is believed to be the first competition of its kind ever held.
Five honorable mention prizes of $1OO each u'ere awarded to: Vlad Balabanov and George Shinno, I-os Angeles Architects; L. Dees-Porch and Paul Grunberg, Nerv York City architects ; Robert Lonson, Minneapolis designer; George Frank Ligar, Los Angeles architect; and John Kewell, Los Angeles architect.
The jury included: John Rex, Los Angeles architect and president, Los Angeles Chapter. American Institute of Architects; Hunt Lewis, Pasadena industrial designer ; C. Gordon De Swarte, Los Angeles structural engineer; and S. Glenn Varley, general manager, Tavart Company, Paramount, California.
"The designs submitted in this competition demonstrate that a garage door need not be prosaically functional and can be a decorative accent as well as blend more harmoniously with the exterior design of a small home," John Entenza, editor of Arts & Architecture said.
All prize-winning entrants submitted materials lists and fabrication plans rvhich, according to the jury, gave evi-
dence that their door designs can be constiucted by an average mechanic and that required materials are available from building supply dealers.
"We ll'ere happy to join with Arts & Architecture as sponsor of this attempt to focus the attention of architects and designers on the problem of improving garage door designs," S. Glenn Varley, general manager, the Tavart Company said.
Over 200 entries from all parts of the country rvere submitted in the competition.
The Tavart Company plans to release a brochure containing winning designs, and a selected group of others, as u'ell as complete specifications for fabricating the designs, according to Mr. Varley. The brochure rvill be rnade available to those rvho request it, he said.
Don Anderson, Tu'in Harbors Lumber Co., Eureka, and N{rs. Anderson, spent a u'eek in Los Angeles recently. Don \\ras a visitor at the offices of C. P. Henrv & Co.. their Southerrr California representative.
A. E. Ferguson and Warren Hoyt, American Lumber & Treating Co., Los Angeles, are back from Chicago where they attended a meetir-rg at the ,company's Chicago office.

What Was Catching Who 1 '
My friend Tom Dempsey goes far and wide seeking fine fishing. The other day he came back from the Bahamas and regaled me with big fish stories . Said he hooked a 570 pounder, and that for a time it was a tight fight who caught who. So I told him one of the great fishing stories that the South has laughed at for two generations, and will continue to do so into the unmeasured future. He hadn ' t heard it.
Dusky Sam was sitting in the shade of a willow tree on the bank of the bayou , fishing He was using a stout willow pole, a heavy cord for a line, and live bait, with a -cork to hold the hook just right whilst Sam dozed happily. in the summer breeze.

There came a sudden violent jerk on the line , as a big catfish grabbed his bait and ran, and the next thing Sam knew he was ten feet fro m shore, his head well under the bajou water But Sam was a fighter, and gave the big " cat " a battle. Holding J' O the pole with his left hand , he swam frantically with hi :s right, and finally, half exhausted, he grabbed a limb of tlie willow just as his feet touched the bottom, and he was safe.
Sam spit out a quart of brackish bayou water , shook his head clear, and philof>ophized: " Whut's Ah want t ' know, " said Sam , "is DIS. Is dis niggah fishin ', or is dis fish niggerin' ! Dass all Ah craves t ' know? "

Here are some other suggestions that may be lielpful.
l. When you receive mats, store them flat in a dry place. Don't fold or spike them and don't try to cut them. If you n'ish to use a part of a mat, just pencil around that part and give it to the newspaper.

One year after the first family moved in and set up housekeeping, Lakervood Park, near North Long Beach, the nation's largest housing development, has reached a population of 27,000 it rvas announced recently.
Built in record time on .ivhat rvas 3,.500 acres of bean fields, Lakervood Park l'as begun on February 24, 1950. The 54 different types of trvo and three bcdroom homes were completed on an average of 40 a day, and the first family, that of Navy veteran Jim Huffman moved in on July 16, 1950. Since that time Lakewood Park has been a l-rubbub of moving vans as nerv families flooded into the $250,000,000 community.
7,4A0 homes \\rere completed before regulation "X" brought construction to a halt. The population figure is based on the average of 3.6 per family at time of sale. Horvever, it rvas pointed out that the 27,000 is very conservative because the Lakeu'ood Park service office rvhich helped each family move in explained that approximately one third of the \\'omen were expecting additions to their families at that time.
The huge development is virtually a complete city .ivith new schools, parks, churches, and a 154 acre shopping center. The shopping center itself rvill be the nation's larg-

There rvill be off-street parking for 9,000 cars at one time, and the stores will be serviced by a tunnel system so that all loading ar-rd unloading can be done at basement level. Work on the shopping center was not affected by building restrictions and some of the stores rvill open this fall.
I{ome construction will be resumed at Lakeu'ood Park under an cntirely nerv type of FHA approved Drogram u'hich s'ill feature some 21 different houses ranging in value frorn $10,000 to $12,000 rvitl-r initial pavments starting at $695 for non-r,ets and vets. alike, and monthly payments bcgining at $57.50. When I-akewood Park was started, a total <tf l7,l5} homes r,r'as planned. The nerv I]HA program rltay enable the developers to complete their original plans.

Scotch Trouble
A Scotchman died and went to fleaven's gate, and knocked.
"Who's there?" inquired St. Peter.
"It's Sandy McKay," was the answer, "and I want in."
"On your way," said St. Peter. "You can't come in."
"An' why not?" demanded the Scot.
"Ye'd be the only one here," said St. Peter, "and it's too much trouble cooking oatmeal for one."
Arbitrcry Government
John Winthrop, of Massachusetts, once said: "Arbitrary Government is where a people have men set over them, without their choice or allowance; who have power to govern them, and judge their causes without a rule. God only hath this prerogative; whose sovereignty is absolute, and whose will is a perfect rule, and reason itself ; so as for man to usurp such authority is tyranny and impiety.,,

O Thou who seest all things below, Grant that Thy servants may go slow, That we may study to comply, With regulations till we die.
Teach us, O Lord, to reverence Committees more than common sense. Impress our minds to make us plan But pass the baby when we can.
And when the tempter seeks to give Us feelings of initiative, Or when alone we go too far, Chastise us with a circular.
Midst war and tumult, fire and storms, We pray Thee strengthen us with forms. Then will Thy servants ever be, A flock of perfect sheep to Thee.

"When the war was over, he was asked to be King, but he did not make false pretences like Julius Caesar or seize the powers as Napoleon did. fnstead of thanking the man who offered him a crown, Washington rebuked him for the worst "insult" he ever had in his life.
"Ffe never punished a rival. He had no rivals, for he did not seek glory or power for himself. When he was made President he accepted unwillingly and tried to retire after his first term. He was persuaded to accept a second. There was another crisis when that ended: but he would not accept a third term under any condition. His Farewell Address is one of the noblest of documents. It is like a letter written by a wise and loving father to his children.
"A lifelong study. of this good and noble gentleman leads me to believe him the greatest and most beneficial human that ever lived. He was truly and beautifully the Father of his Country-of our beloved and eternally grateful countrv."
Advice to Writers
If you would write stories successfully, follow the advice of Alexander Dumas. He said that a book should be like a good dinner, it should have an appetizer first. He meant that the book should furnish the utmost interest to the reader iight from the start, instead of beginning slow and wearying him. Once he has the reader's interest, the writer can do the necessary slowing down. Dumas judged others by himself, looked upon himself as an average reader and. an average human, and figured that what entertained him would entertain othegs, and what bored him, bored others.

June Housing Starts - -1301000
The nation's home builders started 87,7N new private dwelling units in June, a 7-per cent drop from the 93,800 private dwellings begun in May, according to preliminary estimates of the U. S. Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics. Horvever, the more than 42,0N public units, authorized by notice-to-proceed orders issued by the Public Housing Administration, brought the total number of units started in June to 130,000. This compares with 97,W units in the preceding month and 1,14,300 in June 1950; in both these periods practically all housing activity'was private.
The unusually high volume of public units for which proceed orders were issued this June was due to the rush by local housing authorities to get projects under way before the end of the fiscal year. June public housing activity follorved a long period of preparation-approval of plans, amassing of sites, completion of financial arrangements, and awarding contracts. The public projects were located all over the countrv, tvith an especially large number in the South.
The decline in private homebuilding in June u'as apparently general, occurring in all se,ctions of the country, in all sizes of cities, and in both metropolitan and nonmetropolitan areas. A drop in June activity is a common occurrence. This year's decline of 7 per cent in private housing volume compares with the decreases of less than 5 per cent in 1948-1950, but of 6 and 10 per cent, respectively, in 1939 and 1940.
'Ihe continuing high level of private housing activity brought the total of new dwelling units placed under construction in the first 6 months of 1951 to more than half a million. This figure was about one-quarter under the comparable total for 1950, but was well above anv otl-rer year on record.

First
Anniversary of Long Beach
FHA Office
Marking its first anniversary on July 17, the Federal Housing Administration office in Long Beach closes the year with a very satisfying experience and volume of business, according to H. V. Davidson, director. "This," Mr. Davidson said, "bears out the need for such an office in this area."
The first year's business totaled approximately 36 million dollars in commitments issued to lending institutions for the insurance of.2,738 home mortgages, representing 4,724 individual dwelling units in properties located in the southern portion of Los Angeles County and in Orange County, he said.
Of this volume, Mr. Davidson's report discloses, 2,735 commitments for 3,146 dwelling units, and over 72'rnillion dollars in home mortgages to be insured were for small residential properties of from one to four dwelling units mostly under Title II, Section N3, of the National Housing Act. In addition one commitment covering 571 dwelling units for $3,521,100 in mortgage amount to be developed at the El Toro Marine Air Base near Santa Ana in Orange County; and two projects of approximately 1,000 dwelling units for the Lakewood Park Mutual Homes in Lakewood.
"While these figures are far below the estimate of volume upon which the decision to open this office was predicated it is considered exceptionally good in view of the credit controls and curbs which came into being shortly after the opening of this offic€," he said, "however, in spite of the controls the volume of applications received during June of this year, numbercd 602 cases for 1107 dwelling units, the higlrest of any month during the past year."
Boundary Extended
FHA Washington Headquarters just recently announced that the western boundary of the Long Beach office jurisdiction has been extended to the Pacific Ocean on the west to include the southern portion of Compton, and such other cities as Gardena, Torrance, Lomita, Wilmington, San Pedro, Redondo Beach and the surrounding unincorporated areas. Formerly; the western boundary was designated as Alameda Street.
Local lending institutions, builders groups and others interested in home financing had been urgently pressing the FHA Washington headquarters for some time to open an FHA office in Long Beach, and later for the extension of the jurisdiction of the of6ce, both of which have now materialized. Both decisions were based on the need for such an o€fice to better serve the locality, and the year's experience has proven that the decisions to open the Long Beach office and the extension of the territory to the west were both justified, Mr. Davidson concluded.

Teco Glue Course Attended bv Debnse And Industrial Representatives
Washington-Eight representatives of industrial and governmental agencies have just completed an intensive five-day course in the use of wood adhesives for military products held at the research laboratory of the Tirnber Engineering Company.
In view of the gror,r'ing demand for laminated marine timbers and other glued wood items being called for-by the Defense Agencies, Carl A. Rishell, Director of Research, adapted the courses of instruction to fit these needs.
The testing of plywood and the many requirements and tests prescribed in military specifications covering glued products rvere included in the course.
The staff instructors gave special attention to the uses of glues for boat, ship and barge construction. The trainees also personally studied and tested other types of adhesives. This work included characteristics and uses of each type of glue, how they are handled, stored, mixed, spread, cured and how to detect and prevent faulty glue lines.
As a particular feature of the course, two laboratorymade testing machines were used for testing wood shear blocks and plywood. Each man was supplied blueprints of the machines for constructing units in their plants. Regular use of such testing equipment is saving many thousands of dollars annually in woodworking plants.
The effectiveness of the courses is due to a large extent to the small number of trainees permitted for enrollment at one time. Future courses are being planned. The number of enrolees will be restricted as usual so that each man will have personal supervision from the five instructors headed by N. V. Poletika, manag'er of the laboratorv.
