Single Copies, 25 cents; Per Year, $3; Two Years, $5

A FTER JO years at one prinling srand. r r <'ircumslances have made it necessary that The California Lumher \lerchanr move to another printer. This is the first issue from the presses of Fashion Press. a large and modern printing plant in Los Angeles; rve hope you like it.

We mention this move particularly because. in the change-over, all ads which u'ere not complete electro-plates. have had to be re-set. Thus, certain tlpe faces have had to be changed, and we have endeavored in all cases to give a {resh and new look to your advertisements. Now it is

In This lssue

quite possible, in the tremendous job of re-setting and then proofreading the ads, that we may have let an error or two slip by (we hnpe not more than two!). If so. we ask your indulgence-and a quick word from you as to any corrections desired.

Finally, during the past 1'ear, our printing costs have gone up about 15/o. (Our move to the new printer has been one attempt to stabilize the cost situation). In an endeavor to meet this situation, last October we put into efiect a l0/o increase in advertising rates on all new business signed up; those firms which were on contract

were given the 1'ear's grace period on the old rate. However, efiective January l, 1963, it will be necessary that the current rate schedule apply to all-Editor.

A New Member of the Fomily

We are pleased with this issue to introduce a new department in The California Lumber |,ils1ghsn1-'(fhg Credit (iorner," by William E. Locke, appearing on page 38. We hope you like this new editorial feature and that, when questions on credit arise, you will use this new service as a discussion forum.

"There is a tide in the affairs of men. which" taken at the flood "rleeds on to fortune," said Bill Shakespeare. And he proceeded #",further to declare that the man who overlooked that critieal and pregnant opportunity would be a oohas-been" from then on.

Scfiing Tipr Advise Flooring Customers Thqt Top Grod$ Now Ofrer Best Buy in Ook

Lumber dealers can perform an extra service for ,builders and other oak flooring customers tlese days, winning added good will wlthout extra efiort, by calling the customers' attention to the abnormally narrow price gap between the upper and lower grades of oak.

Most buyers, particularly those accustomed to ordering lower grades for economy reasons, undoubtly will appreciate the tip.

This is the advice of Henry H. Willins, executive vice president of the Nation Oak Flooring Manufacturers' Association, who points out that the top grades of oak flooring are an exceptionally good bargin now.

ooNormally," he says, "the tqr grades cost substantially more. But in most areas the price gap has been narrowed to a point not seen in the industry for many years.

"This can be attributed to the exceptionally strong relative demand during the last year or so for the lower grades as builders sought to shave costs. It seems to be a simple matter of the law of supply and demand asserting itself.

ooCustomers are unlikely to be aware of this development, however, unless they follow the market closely. When they realize they can have one of the finest grades of oak flooring for very little more than a low grade, chances are they will be glad to order it. Conversely, should they learn of the sitituation only after purchasing a lower $radeo they resent not being advised of the opportunity."

, Ty$iffiug

th Grdreordiirary4dce,rrlationrhip,. Vt$in*"ipLir*

was a recent Hardwood Market Report in which Clear grade plainsawed white oak flooring in the popular 25132 x 2r/a-inch size was only about B per cent higher than No. I Common white oak and only a little over 6 per cent higher than No. I Common red oak.

In the same report Select grade plain-sawed white oak ran less than 3 per cent more than No. I Common white oak and just slightly over I per cent above No. I Common red oak.

Similarly, No. 2 Common white and red oak was quoted at about 76 per cent of the cost of Clear plain-sawed white oak. No. I Common and Better I7/4 Ft. Shorts came to nearly 75 per cent of Clear plain-sawed white oak. In a normal market these two lower grades might cost only about half as much as Clear.

"Builders should be advised to capitalize on this abnormal market condition while it lasts," Willins adds, "since top grade oak floors are among the basic features that appeal strongly to most home buying prospects. Such floors help put the stamp of quality on a home and make it sell faster. They can be featured effecttively both in a builder's advertising and in talks with prospects."

Although all oak flooring grades are noted for strength, lifetime service-ability and other desirable characteristics, the upper grades are distinguished by greater uniformity of appearance, including fewer natural irregularities. Then too, average lengths of pieces in a bundle are greater. the lower grades also rnay contain minor rnanufacturing imperfections not permitted in the higher classifications.

Industry grading rules for strip oak flooring are established and administered by NOFMA and have been adopted by the Department of Commerce as U. S. Commercial Standards.

"Fire Proleclion Hondbook"

The new and enlarged l2th edition of the Fire Protection Handbook (NFPA), considered the most authoritative reference and text book on the subject of fire, is now ofi the press.

Completely revised, re-edited and restyled, the 2216-page volume has been expanded by almost 700 pages from the previous edition to give the fullest possible treatment of the latest developments in fire protection and prevention.

Earlier editions of the booko published by the National Fire Protection Association" were issued under the title of the NFPA Handbook of Fire Protection, Crosby-Fiske-Forster.

A practical guide for everyone concerned in any way with the protection of lives and property from fire, the volume contains 2l main sections comprehensively covering a tremendous variety of fire subjects.

The sectionalized arrangement of the Handbook is designed to provide a progressive understanding of fire protection engineering and the aims and methods of promoting fire prevention.

There is extensive treatment of many questions relating to building construction.

Among the subjects covered are fire resistance ratings of all types of building assemblies and materials, flame spread charac' teristics of interior finish materials, the principles of venting smoke and heat from buildings, protection of openings in walls, floors and partitions, life safety requirements for exits, and the evaluation of structural damage from fire.

Of special interest to architects and engineers is the data on fire extinguishing and detection systems? water supplies, aireonilitioning' systans, electrical serviee and the installation of heat-producing appliances. The material given is an invaluable aid in developing solutions to design problems involving safety from fire.

The Fire Protection Handbook explains the reasons for good fire safety practices, rather than merely reciting the rules or standards. Background information is given to provide a sound basis for making judgments on matters of specific concern.

More than four years of work by NFPA stafi engineers arrd many outside experts, under the editorship of NFPA Technical Secretary George H. Tryon, have gone into the preparation of the volume. It is illustrated with nearly 1,000 photographs and drawings, as well as more than 300 tables and graphs.

The Fire Protection Handbook (NFPA) is available, at $17.50 a copy, from the National Fire Protection Association, 60 Batterymarch St.. Boston 10. Mass.

This extra strong, rigid paneling is a full75% thicker than l/4" panelings, and may be applied directly to studs or furring strips without backing. Users experience lower in-place paneling costs with substantial labor and material savings.

NE\v 7/18" CUSTOM TI{ICKNESS AT LI4" PREMIUM PANELING PRICES

Although CRAFTWALL is a full three-quarters (75Vo) thicker than most panelings in general use today, it is priced to compare with premium-line 1/4" prefinished hardwood panelings. This new 7 /16" dtmension at 7/4" prices is the result of Weyerhaeuser research and development. The extra thickness is actually a bonus.

VyEYERHAEUSER' ENGINEERED \,I/OOD CORE FOR EIXTRA STRENGTI{, RIGIDITY

The secret oL 7 /16" CRAFTWALL's exceptional strength and rigidity is its Weyerhaeuser specially engineered wood core. This core provides outstanding strength in all directions for unusual dimensional stability. The extra thickness ofiers added insulation value, and more efiectively retards sound.

STRUCTURALLY GUARANTEED IN WRITING F'OR LIFE!

Weyerhaeuser guarantees all 7 /16" CRAFTWALL-in writing-against delamination or other structural defects for the life of the building in which it has been properly installed, and will supply, without charge, new CRAFTWALL panels for any in which structural defects should develop.

TOUGII, DURABLE FACTORY.APPLIED FINISII

The handsome hardwood veneers, which are laminated to the super-smooth core, are protected with a special factory-applied finish that will not crack, chip or yellow with age. This finish withstands repeated contact with water, dirt, grease, inks, alcohol and household chemicals, and cleans easily with a damp cloth.

11 LU)(URIOUS EIARD1/\/OODS IN 2 DISTINCTIVE STYLINGS

All CRAFTWALL hardwood veneers are random matched and V-grooved for an "individual plank" efiect. Yet, the large size panels in 7', 8' and 10' lengths and 4' widths apply easily with nails or contact cement for laborsaving installation. The panels are so designed that one groove falls every 16", allowing direct nailing through the groove into the studs without marring the mirror-smooth finish. Panel edges are half-beveled to form a full V-groove when placed side by side. All 11 CRAFTWALL hardwoods are available in 2 distinctive stylings V-grooved (Style 100) and V-grooved, cross-scored and pegged (Style 300). Lengths to 16', and U. One of the fastest-selling items in the businessthe cupolais now available here in the West from millwork distributors.

George M. Stephenson & Co., the country's largest manufacturer of cupolas, has appointed distributors to cover the 13 Western states. These Western millwork distributors now carry complete stocks of Stephenson cupolas for immediate delivery to assist lumber dealers in capitalizing on this untouched market. Over 25,000 lumber dealers in the Eastern. Middle-West and Southern states are already handling this extraprofit item.

The low-price, high-profit Stephenson cupola sells itself. The cupola, a traditional touch of elegance on the home for more than 300 years, formerly was a customdesigned and hand-crafted item. This made it too costly for many homeowners. However, volume production methods have brought prices down to a reasonable level.

Thus. the Western homeowner who has always wanted a cupola for his home or garage-but thought it too expensive-will be happy to know that completely assembled, ready-to-install cupolas are now avail-

25,000 lumber Dealers Now

able here, as well as in the rest o{ the country. A hammer and saw are the only tools needed to install one.

An important selling point that is often overlooked is that most homeowners-and builders, too-will be surprised to learn the cupola is a highly-efficient roof ventilator. Because it creates up-drafts like a chimney, it's actually much better than many gable oi other louvers that ventilate the attic. A cupola can lower attic temperatures as much as 20 degrees or more. It solves many condensation problems and reduces fire hazards from spontaneous combustion, as well as providing greater comfort.

Since many homes are being completed at this time of year, right now is the time when sales to builders are greatest. Any Stephenson distributor will provide merchandising aids at no cost. These include folders, stuffers, ad mats, radio commercials, and display material. A most efiective and eye-catching sales promoter is the "3-HIGH DISPLAY," formed by stacking three difierent-sized cupolas. Most orders can be filled from this display stock that requires only a small investment.

The cupola is tastefully designed to complement the style of any type of home - modern, rancho contemporary, split-level, Colonial, and all the rest. It is made in

these sizes to fit any home or garage, large or small:

. 24 x 24-inch base for single garages, breezeways, and small buildings.

27 x 27-inch base for double garages or small houses with roof ridge less than 30 feet long.

30 x 30-inch base for large garages, attached garages, and houses with rocf ridge up to 45 feet long.

. 36 x 36-inch base for houses with roof ridge up to 55 feet long, or on large 4t. tached garages.

o 42 x A2-inch base for houses with roof ridge up to 65 feet long.

. 48 x 48-inch base for houses with roof ridge longer than 65 feeto on motels, restaurants, or other buildings.

Each cupola is individually cartoned for easy stocking and handling.

Quality of the cupolas is excellent. They are sturdily constructed of lifetime Redwood, and one-inch or thicker Redwood is used, even for the louvers. Joints are mitered and tightly fitted. Roof edges and lou* vers are nicely rounded and attractive.

The cupola roofs of the three smaller sizes in the economy models are protected with aluminum-colored roof coating. The (Continued, on Page 24)

Renowned Artist Points For Notionql Home Week

Stan Galli, one of the nation's foremost illustrators, has been commissioned by Veyerhaeuser Company to bring to life on canvas the theme and slogan for Na' tional Home Weeko 'obetter living begins when you own a new home."

Galli is well-known for his illustrative work in McCall's, Saturday Evening Post, True and a variety of national outdoor magazines. The special home week Sept. 30-Oct. 6 to parade newest home features and conveniences is sponsored by the National Association of Home Builders and local chapters in cities throughout the Iand.

Galli spent several months researching the National Home Week assignment before putting his illustrative ideas on paper. The result is shown in the accompanying inviting illustration that Weyerhaeuser, a leading wood products manufacturer, will feature in a two page ad in Reader's Digest (October issue) calling attention to the event. The magazine which has over 40 million readers will reach subscribers just before opening of National Home Week.

Galli drew inspiration for the warm, friendly home in his illustration from contemporary architecture featuring indooroutdoor living. The painting portrays the

Behind the family as they come through a generous sliding door is an atrium, or open court, a design nicely borrowed lrom Roman architecture. It provides the privacy of enclosure while artfully preserving outdoor variety for the familY.

J. P. Weyerhaeuser, manager of market' ing research and merchandising for the wood products firm, said reproductions of the Galli illustration are available to local home builder organizations for use in news' papers and promotional brochures that will Le developed for National Home Week.

Forest Industries Building Colled "5uperior" in Design

Architecture in the nation's capital is lagging behind the city's ever-increasing importance, according to an article in the August 19 issue oI The Neut York Tirnes Magazine. In a long, critical look at Washington's commercial structures, Ada Louise Huxtable, well-known writer in the field of art and architecture, describes the capital's Commercial Modern as "t.he same old mold of architectural Jelloseveral delicious flavors, all alike-served by spec' ulative builders everywhere.

In short, writes Mrs. Huxtable, "Wash' ington's spreading business construction has contributed nothing to the elevation of the city's architectural standards.

"Among Washington's private inslitutional buildings," Mrs. Huxtable states, "concentrated search turns up only one recently completed superior example. It is

the new Forest Industries BuildinS, bY Keyes, Lethbridge'& Condon, whose classi' cally simple contemporary look respects the city's style.

The Forest Industries Building, located at 1619 Massachusetts Avenue. N.W., is the new headquarters of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association. NLMA's wholly owned resear"h and testing subsidiary, the $1.6'million structure was designed as a showcase for the Iumber and wood products industry and has already been cited by several organizations {or its outstanding design and construction. Santa Clara Valley Hoo-Hoo Enioys Golf - Barbeque

More than 75 divot diggers and banquet followers took in the big tournament and barbeque hosted by Santa Clara Valley Hoo-Hoo Club 170 at the San Jose Country Club on August 10. Because of the excellent showing, club 170 prexy Knute Weidman has disclosed, the Santa Clara club will concentrate on making the event its one big meeting of the year, possibly in the future like the Oakland Reveille. the San Francisco Roundup, and the San Joaquin Valley Frolics.

Although some thoroughly despondent golfer apparently made off with the list of scores, some 50 golfers enjoyed an afternoon in the sun and some exceptional scores (who's to prove otherwise? ). It is predicted that the Santa Clara membership will again select the San Jose Golf and Country CIub for next year's annual outing because of the excellent condition of the course, and the fine cuisine and generous libations served in the newlv remodelled country club.

An increase is noted in the number of poles, fence posts, and miscellaneous products treated with wood preservatives. However, treatment of crossties, switch ties,. Berco Manufacfuring of Sacramento ln New and Expanded Plant

Berco Manufacturing, Sacramento pro. ducers of sliding door frames and related wood products, has just completed a move to a new and expanded plant at 8255 Belvedere Ave. in a recently opened industrial area of Sacramento, just east of Power Inn Road. The company, owned and managed by Erwin M. Bjerke, started here in 1950, and has steadily grown as a leading area manufacturer of sliding door frame components.

The new facilities include a wood frame and wood truss building,. 152 by 50 {eet, with unobstructed floor area and inside vertical clearance of 14 feet. Siding is corrugated galvanized iron. The plant is designed for in"line production with lumber storage and woodworking mill at the rear. Five wide service doors assure efficient flow of material with lift truck handling. Berco Manufacturing occupies one-half acre of developed land and holds two additional acres for future expansion.

In addition to its primary product, pocket sliding door frames, the firm manrrfactures wardrobe sliding door frames, folding doorso outside door frames, prehung doors and specialized items related to these products, The firm also serves as , distributor for Yale builders hardware.

Over twelve years ago, the firm was started by Bjerke in an old barn on Fruitridge Road with just a thousand dollar investment. A{ter two years it was moved to another building across the road, where it has remained until the present move.

During this period of growth, Bjerke points to the tremendous changes in the homebuilding industry which his firm serves. Doors and door openings are no longer an item fabricated by a carpeneter on the job. Instead they are installed by the carpenter as a pre-fit, pre-hung unit.

o'Construction becomes more unitized in every way," says Bjerke. o'People are demanding more and more in their homecountless closets, storage space, special openings. To provide these at the reasonable cost necessary, there must be standardization and pre-fabrication. This is the specialized field of our company."

He sees a bright future {or wood products with no limit other than availability of wood itself. In this connection, he considers the company's location, Sacramento, to be advantageous for lumber supply, as well as a strategic point for serving the Northern California market.

In making the expansion, a new plant was built rather than adapting to an existing structure, Bjerke explains, so that the firm could plan for a layout and design specifically suited to their needs, {lexible, with a smooth flow of material and the least amount of handling. Because the products are specialized. the cutting and assembling tables in the fabrication section o{ the plant were designed and built by the firm for specific jobs. The millwork section at the rear presently includes planer, rip saw, sticker and sander. Eventual plans call for the construction of additional storagespace.

Moving the plant at this time was a real problem for the company. Plans required a move with no interruption of the production schedule. The actual job was accomplished in two days by Shippers Distribution and Drayage Company, Sacramento. The following day critical parts of the operation were back in production.

Domestic Hordwood Production Shows Good 196l Gqin

Recent figures released liy the domestic hardwood plywood industry disclosed a good gain in 196l production over the previous year. Domestic hardwood plywood production from 196I was pegged at 924 million square feet. This included production from 166 plants East of the Rockies, and 33 W'estern manufacturing plants. Production for 1961 increased 132 million square feet over the industry's 1960 output of 792 million square feet.

Approximately one-third of domestically produced hardwood plywood in recent years has been "captive" plywood-produced and used by parent firms such as furniture factories, according to Tarifi Commission Report fi77. Census Bureau reports of domestic hardwood plywood shipments since 1955 have not included 'ocaptive" productiontherefore showing only approximately 2/s oI actual domestii production.

United Lumber Yords Joins lumber Merchqnts Assn. of Northern Cqlifornio

United Lumber Yards, which maintains heaquarters at Modesto, California, was welcomed into a full membership in the Lumber Merchants Association of Northern California on September I. Don Vopat is general manager of the large chain organization which

operates 17 lumberyards one large building supply in the Central San Joaquin Valley and center at South Lake Tahoe.

In a recent Tariff Commission ruling, members agreed that'ofiie conclusion is inescapble that Lauan. (Philippine mahogany) plywood has largely created the markets to which it caters, and that it has not in substantial degree encroached upon markets that have been supplied in appreciable measure by hardwood plywood of other species, whether imported or domestic."

Imported hardwood plywood is in appearance-grade natural finish panel normally used for interior decorative purposes. Soft-" wood plywood is specified for its structural strength and its application to modern "component" construction. Consequently, hardwood plywood and softwood plywood go hand-in-hand in modern home and commercial construction.

Another milestone in the progress of science. A bequtiful, durqble, solidly built home which, by troditionql methods took weeks to build, con now be erected in q motler of hours. All this hos become q proclicol reolity with the Interlocking Post, Plqnk ond Beom principle used in Rockport Red-D-Wood Homes of solid Redwood.

Nature has endowed Redwood with many remarkable qualities, such as its practical immunity from termites and fungi, its fire retardant feature and extreme longe, vity.

U'NIQUE PROPERTIES OF REDWOOD

The natural cellular structure of quality Redwood lumber, is what makes it so completely workable for our precision manufacturing and interlocking members. It stays straight and true so that deep tongue and groove sections fit together accarately; corners, ends, edges and everything joins snuglv and stays that way.

Redwood is universally known for its durability and the fact that it takes any type of paint or stain. And it does beautifully without any covering. However, Rock-

port Red-D-\7ood Homes are pre-finished and factorysealed both interior and exterior thus obviating all finishing costs normally required in home construction.

$e pen SQUARE Foor

Price of a packaged Red-D-\(ood Home, f.o.b. Cloverdale, California, is figured at $4 per square foot. A house like the one pictured here, for example (Model No. 624) having 624 sluare feet, would cost $2496. This includes all room partitions, exterior walls, roof decking and beams. Current models range from 6og to !12 square feet.

COST SAVING IS SUBSTANTIAT

Quite naturally the initial cost of a Red-D-\Zood Home has been yery attr^ctive to the purchaser. The savings

are many fold; a sizable one is labor time. Then there's the total elimination of waste; every piece of lumber precision milled exactly right and according to plan. Each piece is marked to correspond with "assembly details" provided with each lumber package. Assembly is simple and easy; all the more so since no parts of walls or partitions are more than 8 ft. long.

Erection of Rockport Red-D-\7ood Homes is speedy because of rapid job-site assembling, with fewer man hours and dual function of materials. The use of continuous tongue and groove planks in wall panels and roof sheathing results in tremendous savings in both material and labor dollars. For example: SThen walls are erected (plates, posts, plank panels, door headers, and window headers-sills and cripples) and plank and beam roof installed, the structure is finished inside and out ready to set in windows, hang doors, and install fixtures. Four people can erect this Red-D-\7ood package in one day.

FINANCING RED.D.WOOD HOMES

Financing for Rockport Red-D-\(ood Homes is available to approved franchise dealers. An improved lot is usually sufficient for the purpose.

It is encouraging to note that not all mass merchandisers of building supplies and lumber are worried about downtown com. petition, discount houses and modern systematic credit selling programs increasing their customer loss.

Armin Speckert, Jr., progressive man. ager of Speckert Building Supplies on the outskirts of the twin cities of Marysville and Yuba City, California, is a firm believer of well stocked shelves and sondolas, and toon their toes" sales force, -and a plan of credit management that invites good credit business.

cluded nine retail lumber and building material outlets as well as three ready-mix concrete plants.

Prior to his Wichita connection, Masters' management experience in the building materials field included posts in New York, Ohio, Texas and with the Douglas Fir Plywood Association.

Masters entered the building materials industry in I9M, and through personal choice learned the business lrom the ground up, including the various phases of labor connected with the distribution of building materials. He holds Bachelors and Masters degrees from Cornell University, and has fulfilled teaching assigrrments in agricultural sciences at Cornell before getting into the active merchandising of building materials.

Masters points out, "It has always been my contention that one should be active in the community to which he belongs. My activity in this area has included membership and participation in multiple trade associations, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, and the Methodist Church."

Masters has also been active in many furrd raising drives and prior to leavini Wichita was chairman of the Sedgewicls County Chapter of the National Foundation March of Dimes. He was slso a 1962 appgintee of the Life Building Materials Dealers Marketing Council, composed of 27

outstanding members of the building industry from throughout the nation.

In taking office, Masters notes, "My experience has indicated that present day building trends require flexibility and di' versification. We have placed great empha' sis on strong training and educational programs, and have extended into such customer services as remodeling and building.:'

Masters says he firmly believes that a building materials supplier's responsibility to the consumer only starts with the initial sale.

The new King Lumber president has taken up residence at Panorama Gardens with his wife, Jean, and their two children, Richard 12, and Margaret, 10.

Metcalf has been serving as chief executive officer of the King Lumber organization for the past several years. This ofrce has now been eliminated, but Metcalf will remain as chairman of tfre board. No other staff changes are contemplated at this timeo he said.

Dear Ole:

Probably a lot of old timers like me have looked through the past two issues for the "25 years ago" feature. Please do not drop this very interesting item. In fact, I think it would be a fine idea to double up on the news slips of years gone by, by making it read "50 and 25 years ago.tt

The San Diego Union has published such an item headed "San Diego,75,50 and 25 years ago" through the years, and it is one of the popular features of that very excellent newspaper.-Edgar B. Culnan, Chula Vista, California.

Gentlemen:

I have read with interest the article by John Reno entitled "Protection Against TermitesIfouses with Crawl Spaces,, on page 30 of your July 16, 1962 issue. This is one of a series that will later deal with slabon-grade houses, since basement

houses have already been covered in your last previous issue of July 1st.

The attention given to metal termite sbields by Mr, Reno is not wananted. Subterranean termites do not build tubes so frequently in California as in the eestern states, and because of poor design,, improper installation, and lack of inspection, shields have become discredited. I have prepared the enclosed article which I hope you will publish. A copy has been mailed to my old friend, Marx Hyatt of the J. H. Baxter & Co.

My qualifications are 42yeats in the U. S. Department of Agriculture, working on termites; an advisory member of the 1929 California Termite Investigations Committee 1929-1934. 1951 to date Honorary Research Associate, Smithsonian Institution. -Thomas E. Snyder, Consultant, 280tr Adams Mill Road, N.W., Washington 9, D.C.

PROTECTION TO HOUSES AGAINST SUBTERRANEAN TERMIIES

lhomsr E. Siydet Woshington, D.C.

John Reno's second informative article "Protection against termites," in the July 15, 1962

issue of your valued California Lumber Merchant follows the Federal Housing Administration's latest specifications for the protection of residences. Reno justifiably included an additional protection "soil cover", but over emphasized shields and said little about the importance of treated lumber. Most of California is in the area of very heavy infestation by three types of termites and every precaution should be taken.

Most housing officials still recommend metal termite shields as an alternative method of termite control because theoretically shields are efrective. All realize, however, that in practice they are not. Shielding has become a racket. Termite species in California do not construct earth-like shelter tubes as frequently as do species in other sections of the country. Most shields are poorly designed and constructed, carelessly or incompletely installed and are not properly inspected, They are not completely effective. I was the first to recommend shields in government publications. I no longer recommend shields. They rrc not neesrery in Cslifornia.

The pressure impregnation of lumber and construction timbers with chemical wood preservatives is one of the elternate

methods of termite control in the Federal Housing Administration's specification. This method not only gives protection against subterranean termites (species of Reticulitermes), but also against dampwood ternites (species of Zootermopsis) and the drywood termites (species of Kalotermes) as well as rot or decay. All wood must be pressure impregnation treated in accordance with Federal Specifications.

With Dr. Walter Ebeling, head of the Department of Entomology of the University of California at Los Angeles and others, I served on a special committee at Washington, D.C. from 1955 to 1957. This committee was formed to prepare termite-proofing specif ications for the Federal Housing Administration. It rvas under the auspices of the Building Research Institute, National Academy of Sciences-National Research Council.

Dr. Ebeiing has inspected a number of houses in the Los Angeles area which had been built approximately 20 years ago, using pressure treated lumber for termite protection. These houses were found to be in sound condition and free of infestation. Furthermore, the owners of these houses have a great sense of security and were most pleased.

Poper Morket Increoses in 1962

Every year Americans use more and more paper, but even with this tremendous demand, the industry will have overcapacity for years to come.

"Despite this," said Lawson P. Turcotte, president of Puget Sound Pulp & Timber Co. in a recent speech to security analysts, "the long range outlook for the paper market is good. U. S. consumption of newsprint set new records for the first seven

months ending in July. Consumption for January-July, 1962, was 4.291,048 tons compared with 4,\72,400 in 1961.

He noted that his firm has moved from a strictly pulp operation to a point where it now uses 40 per cent of its own raw materials for its own finished products. This industry-wide pattern will continue as the situation requires, he said.

With the acquisition of Gould Paper Co. of New York state, paper products have accounted Ior 55/o of the firm's opera-

tion, Turcotte said.

Turcotte proudly pointed out that Puget Sound has been able to hold about even in the pulp and paper industrv despite sagging profits in the last few years.

Pulp prices fell apart about two years ago, dropping 14 per cent, and are still at about that level, he added.

Puget Sound would about duplicate its $48 million in sales this year and approximately repeat the 945 million profit it showed in 1961, he told the group.

Most leading firms report that a well organizd recrcation program results in such benefits as increased productivity, better communieation among' personnel, reduced turnover and absenteeism, and greater understanding between management and labor,

A company's recreation program merits periodic study and evaluation. Now is a good time to examine the company's program, with a view to planning changes or expansion before the Fall season begins. For executives seeking a simple, clear. primer on company recreation, and a step-by-step guide on how to start a program, a'new booklet published by American Machine & Foundry Co., Bowling Products Division, is available free, It's entitled "Employee Recreation Is Good Business." Speciftcotions Tightened For Sign Moteriql

Much tighter speeifications now are being demanded by purchasers of materials for outdoor sigr use, particularly in the highway, railroad and advertising fields, according to a survey report just issued by J. E. Hande, western plywood sales manager for Georgia-Pacific Corp.

"The trend toward tougher specifications is resulting in increased demand for overlaid plywood sign material with solid cores of either one-piece or edge-glued veneers, aimed at offsetting long-term maintenance costs," Hande said in a report to regional managers of G-P's nationwide plywood distribution system.

A typical specification now being written into supply contracts, as insurance against material failure under long-time exterior usage, requires that "plywood furnished on this contract shall comply in all respects

with CS46-60 for the applicable tvpe and shall, in addition, be made in such a manner that whenever any panel is cut no core member shall have a void or veneer split exceeding %-inch in widthr" it was reported.
