The New Commercial Standard For Douglas Fir Plywood

Higher performance standards for adhesives used in all interior type Douglas fir plywood top the list of product refinements set forth in the new U. S. Commercial Standard CS45-47 adopted by the Pacific Northwest panel makers rvho produce two-thirds of the nation's plywood.

Other improvements of quality under the standard, promulgated through the National Bureau of Standards and effective for new production from September 15, include:

1. Higher specifications for inner plys of all grades of both exterior and interior types of Douglas fir plywood.

2. An improved Plyscord sheathing grade. 3. Simplification of grades through combining the old Plywall (wallboard) grade and Plypanel Sound 1 Side grade. Plypanel Sound 1 Side grade now becomes the all-purpose interior panel material.

"That which was special now has become regular," Managing Director Charles E. Devlin of Douglas Fir Plywood Association of Tacoma, Wash., commented in explaining the rigid new perforfilance requirement for adhesives in interior type fir plywood. "The highly moisture resistant (but not waterproof) adhesives previously used only in 'special' or 'premium' quality interior fir plyr, vood, under the nerv standard is the regular glue for interior type Douglas fir plywood."

Performance Upped

These previously-considered "special" adhesives originally were introduced in tl-re Plyform (concrete form) grade fir plywood nine years ago to assure a panel for form construction that can be used numerous times on concrete jobs, the plywood official said. This type of adhesive recently has been termed "10 cycle glue," "concrete forrn glue," and "CCF glue" as u'ell as "special" or "prenrinrn."

Formerly, the test for regular interior plywood was two cvcles of rvetting and drying rn''ithout delamination. As set forth in the new Commercial Standard, all interior type fir plywood now is produced to withstand an average of 10 cycles of wetting and drying rvithout failure.

There are just two types of Douglas fir plyrvood, the type being determined by the glue us€cl to bond the plys together. Exterior type fir plywood is manufactured with completely water-proof adhesives and is intended for permanent outdoor and marine uses; interior type fir plywood is bonded rvith highly moisture-resistant (but not water-

proof) glues and intended for inside uses and such structural parts of the house as sheathing and sub-flooring.

Within each type there are several appearance grades, the grade being established ,by the appearance properties of the wood in the outer or face plys rather than with regard to the adhesive.

Limitations Set

The raising of the quality standards for all Douglas fir plyrvood is exemplified in stricter limitation of defects permitted in inner plys of the exterior type material under CS45-47. This tightening of the inner veneer construction is to assure greater serviceability; quality of outer plys is, of course, determinecl by appearance requirements for the various grades.

Limitations, although less stringent, also are announced for the veneer of inner plys of interior type panels.

Also, under the new standard, certain other western softu'ood species are allo'ived for inner plys of several grades of interior type plywood, but Plyscord (sheathing grade) and Plyforrn must be entirely of Douglas fir. Similarly, all inside as well as outer plys of the exterior type fir plywood must be of Douglas fir veneer.

The new, more stringent specification for glue performance in interior plywood is particularly important in the Plyscord grade as such panels may be subjected to wetting from rain during construction. As well, the veneer specifications for outer plys oi this grade of material have been modified to provide a structurally stronger panel. Plyscord remains, however, a rough, unsanded material for utility use where appearance is of little consequence.

Grades Combined

In effect, the old Plywall grade, rvhich has proved highly popular for interior u'all covering and for miscellaneous uses where only one paintable surface is desired, is being replaced by the new Plypanel Sound 1 Side (SO1S) grade. The face of the Sound 1 Side panel is, and has been, the same as that of the old Plyrvall. In the back of the panel being retained, blemishes and appearance defects permitted must be smaller than those previously allorved in the old Plywall back, but may be somervhat more conspicuotts than in the back of the Plypanel SO1S grade nnder the previous standard.

Prices and wages are two words that hog the headlines. And yet-when we produce all the worth-while things we need, fill all our stomachs, clothe all our nakedness, and house all our people comfortably, then we will have achieved genuine prosperity regardless of the wage scale or the price level.

Trade names are interesting things. Twenty-five years ago California used great quantities of softwood lumber from the Northwest which they called "Oregon" Pine, or simply "OP" for short. This "Oregon" Pine in California was Douglas Firin other places. But at that time the lumber and building industry in California hardly knew what lDouglas Fir was. ft was just "Oregon" Pine to them. i Where and when that trade name attached itself to Dougls Fir is a mystery. When THE CALIFORNIA

QIFER MERCHANT started publication in California ove{ 25 years ago it simply overlooked the name "Oregon" Pine in its printed columns, and called the wood Douglas Fir. Not long after, Kenneth Smith started a campaign to get rid of the trade name and restore to the wood its proper name, and soon "Oregon" Pine was forgotten in California, and Douglas Fir took over.

It may be that oo.,gt."*fi, n"U "" claim of foul against anyone for calling it "Oregon" Pine, for the interesting fact is that it is really not a true fir. When Dr. Archibald Menzies, famous botanist, invaded the Northwest in 1791, he discovered great forests of this magnificent tree which excited his admiration, and likewise puzzled, him; or so it seems. He described it as "a false hemlock with a yewlike leaf," and compared it in various ways to fir, hemlock, yew, and spruce. Just a generation later another great botanist, Dr. David Douglas came from Scotland, and spent several years classifying the trees of the Northwest. So they named the prevailing great tree "Douglas Fir," after him.

*{<*

Back in the days a generation ago when they were calling Douglas Fir "Oregon" Pine in California, there was another conspicuous trade name situation in the Western forests. The mighty stand of soft Pine that grows in various Western states is Pinus Ponderosa. But they called it "White Pine," and that became its fixed trade name among its manufacturers, distributors, and users. Ifit came from California, one of the biggest Ponderosa states, it was called "California White Pine." If from the other states it was "Western White Pine." In California there was a

California white pine association. But Pinus Ponderosa is NOT a true White Pine. It is a tree with a three needle leaf, which, botanically, makes it a member of the Yellow Pine family. Plenty of this wood is white as lumber comes. Which changes its botanical classification not at all.

***

About 16 years ago the Federal Trade Commission, after various hearings and discussions, issued an order forbidding the use of the name "White Pine" for Ponderosa. It just could not be called "White," whether with or without the usual prefixes of "California," or "'Western." The Western lumbermen accepted the decision and proceeded to comply with it. They hit on a plan that has worked out splendidly. They simply began calling their wood by its real botanical name, Ponderosa. It is interesting to note that while this rvas a tremendous industry, the change of name was made with little difficulty, and Ponderosa Pine came into its own. The order covering Ponderosa did not affect Western Sugar Pine, because that IS a true White Pine with a five needle leaf. Funny, isn't it, that they used to call their Yellow Pine "White Pine." but never called their true white pine "White"? They have always called it Sugar Pine. Very often Ponderosa boards will be found whiter in color than Sugar Pine boards in the same lot. Which changes their classification not at all.

The Ponderosa people were lucky, when they had to give up their established trade names, to be able to successfully substitute therefor the real name of the wood, as they have done, and make its real name its trade name. Think what might have happened had the Douglas Fir folks been called upon to do the same thing. Carpenters have no trouble about calling on the lumber dealer for Ponderosa. But can you imagine one of them walking into a lumber yard and asking the dealer for a thousand feet of Pseudotsuga Taxifolia? For that, dear friends, is the botanical name of Douglas Fir.

At about the same time the Federal Trade Commission outlawed the use of the word "white" to designate Ponderosa Pine, it likewise questioned the propriety of calling some beautiful Philippine hardwoods "Philippine Mahogany." Botanically speaking, these woods are NOT true Mahoganies. The decision was made in favor of the Philippine distributors, it being shown that there was no intent to deceive the trade, or to fool anyone into thinking these WERE true Mahoganies. It was strictly a trade name. That decision still stands. Almost no Philippine Mahogany has come to this country since the war started, but some day

Matry millions of young Americans are fighting against odds for a place in this difficult and topsy-turvy world of today. We read and hear much of their problems. It might be well to quote some history to them; to remind them that from the ranks of the workers and fighters spring most American successes, and the fact that a young man may be on a low rung of the ladder today does not mean he has to stay there. It might be helpful to remind them that most of the intellectual giants o,f history who have cast great shadows of good across the world, came from that class of humanity we sometimes hear referred to as ,,ill-fed, illhoused, and ill-clad." It has always been that way. And it is a safe bet that most of the men whose names will be spelled in capital letters in days to come, will spring from those same classes of society. It seems to be an ordering of God that genius will rear its head much more frequently in a cottage than in a mansion.

"Eloquence is logic on fire," said Lyman Beecher. Someone made a suggestion the other day that hung out the stop, Iook, and listen sign, it was so appealing. He said that England in her present great extremity is not much in need of a great political and civic leader, as of a great

orator. He spoke truth. Churchill, one of the greatest orators in this world's history, would not have been onetenth as effective during the recent world war, had he been less than the mighty man of incomparable thoughts and words. Amazing, isn't it, what kingly words can do for a people in time of crisis? Much that passes for oratory is merely argument-declamation. Oratory is something far different; it is the impassioned outpouring ofa human heart. ***

An orator's words are the instinctive servants of his heart and mind. Persuasion sits upon his lips. A true orator idealizes the real, fills the gallery of the imagination with statues and pictures perfect in color, enriches the brain, ennobles the heart, and quickens the conscience. Between his lips wondrous words and phrases bud and blossom. Milton was a great genius who firmly believed that the lips of a true orator are touched with Promethean fire. He speaks of the "Eternal Spirit who can enrich with all utterance and knowledge, and sends out His Seraphim with the hallowed fire of His altar to touch and purify the lips of whom fle pleases." It is that sort of an orator that England needs right now to lift her great spirit high once more. Which reminds me that we could use one here, too.

"Offisher, please Mishter Offisher, can you direct me to the offishes of Alcoholics Anonymush?"

Officer Clancy was both kindly and helpful, so he asked:

"I'll be glad to direct you, young man. What do you want to do, join up?"

The young man swayed a bit as he thought the question over.

"Hell, No !" he said. "I WANT TO RESIGN."

New Dciry Bcrn cnd Grcrncry Designs Employ Frcming Anchors

Washington To meet the demand for improved farm ,building designs, the Timber Engineering Company has just prepared new designs for dairy barns and a combination corn-crib and granary.

The dairy barn design provides a 32' width with gambrel roof. A general floor plan is shorvn along with a half framing elevation and a detailed half section of the sides and roof. Wall and post footings and other details are shown. Unique in this design is the employment of Trip-L-Grip framing anchors for reinforcing all critical points such as studs to sills, rafters to plate and studs to joists.

The combination corn-crib and granary design provides f.or a 27' x 32' building for storing 2,000 bushels of grain and 1,000 bushels of corn. To guard against grain pressures and generally strengthen the overall structure framing anchors are used throughout.

The framing anchors, a new item, are being nationally distributed through retail lumber dealers. Lumber dealers and farmers may receive free copies of the designs and detailed information on the use of anchors by 'rvriting the Timber Engineering Company at Washington, Chicago or New Orleans.

New Commercial Standard For Douglas Fir Plywood

(Continued from Page 4)

Also eliminated from the stock grades of fir plywood being manufactured is the marine grade of the exterior type. The marine grade, developed for the military during the war, was intended to withstand the exrreme use conditions imposed by the Army and Navy; very little has been produced since war's end. Some manufacturers will continue to produce, on special order, exterior plywood of selected veneer and special ply construction in accordance with specifiations of the individual producer.

All grades of exterior type fir plywood, of course, are manufactured with the same waterproof phenolic resin adhesives. The Sound 2 Sides grade of exterior plywood has proved most popular for most uses either in commercial or pleasure craft; for some applications, Sound 1 Side panels are specified.

Copies of the complete standard, which not only describes in detail the types and grades of Douglas fir plywood but which as well sets forth the performance requirements for the material, will be supplied free upon request to Douglas Fir Plywood Associzrtion, Tacoma 2. Wash.

R. E. Saberson was re-elected Snark of the ljniverse

Three new members were elected to the Supreme Nine: LeRoy H. Stanton, Los Angeles, Junior Hoo-Hoo; Carl C. Crow, Portland, Oregon, Custocatian; Russell L. Fish, Scituate, Massachusetts, Gurdon. Several changes were made in the positions held by members' Martin T. Wiegand, Washington, D. C., was made Senior Hoo-Hoo. Charles W. Goodrum, Kansas City, became Scrivenoter. Martin J. McDonald, Port Arthur, Ontario, Bojum; E. \\r. Kettlety, Chicago, Jabberwock; S. F. lIorn, Nashville, Tennessee, Arcanoper.

The election session was enlivened by the nomination from the floor of Hal R. Dixon, Spokane, for Snark, by his club. Mr. Saberson, rvho was not a candidate, had finally agreed to serve, if elected, after the "drafted Saberson" movement had assumed national proportions' When Mr. Dixon withdrelv his name the recommendations of

the nominating committee received a unanimous vote.

Prominent lumbermen from all parts of the country were present and Spokane hotels were hard pressgd to accommodate the visitors. Entertainment features included a golf tournament, lumberjack dinner, crab dinner at the Spokane Country Club, and a dinner dance as the grand finale. Special events were arranged for the ladies.

At the opening meeting delegates heard the annual reports of the officers of the Order. Snark Saberson stressed the importance of clearly defined, worth-while objectives and the need for an cnganization such as Hoo-Hoo to promote better understanding among the many component parts of the far-flung lumber industry. "There is food for serious thought," he said, "in the fact that in the year of the lumber industry's greatest prosperity there never were more misunderstandings, bickerings, fingerpointings, recriminations than exist today. War has taught us we have the ways and'means to die together. Hoo-Hoo can assist mightily in teaching us in the industry how to live together."

Mr. Saberson called attention to the '*'idesPread approval of the nerv ten-minute streamlined induction ceremony

which can be used when circumstances do not permit the use of the traditional, lengthy ritualistic initiation that calls for well-rehearsed degree teams and spacious surroundings. A class of more than 50 Kittens was inducted into the Order at the close of the first day's session.

T. T. Jones, president, Board of Councillors, reported that the active membership had increased more than 30 percent since the previous annual meeting-"the largest in any year since the reorganization of the Order."

International Secretary Ben F. Springer's report dealt more specifically with figures: 1,300 new members and reinstatements; 4,022 membership cards issued; 33 Concats, some of which broke all previous records for size; a substantial decline in lapsed memberships; extensive activities of the Supreme Nine; new Hoo-Hoo clubs in Pennsylvania, Texas, Florida, Washington, Oregon, and fine support from the trade press and lumber dealer associations. He closed with the statement that "the key to a continuing greater Hoo-Hoo is the election of national and local oTficers for their knowledge, ability, loyalty, and willingness to work."

Treasurer W. M. Wattson reported all bills paid and a cash balance in the treasury of approximately $8,000.

Chairmen of the committees appointed at the opening session were Arthur A. Hood, Resolutions; Chas. W. Goodrum, Administration; Martin Wiegand, Legislation, and Good of the Order; T. T. Jones, Nominations.

The delegates adopted resolutions setting up a national committee on education, recommended forest products promotional committees at local club levels, "friends of the forests" committees to cooperate with national and local projects to perpetuate timber supply. Initiation dues were increased to $9.99, effective October 9. They went on record as favoring Los Angeles for the 1948 convention, Kansas City in 1949, and Boston in 1950.

Panel discussions of unusual interest were the features of two sessions. Father Francis J. Corkery, S. J., Gonzaga Llniversity, was the leader of the panel on "Labor Relations" which was made up of Hal Dixon, Western Pine Manufacturing Co., Spokane; Kenny Davis, A.F.L., Virgil Burtz, C.I.O.; Geo. Tichy, Timber Products Manufacturing Co., Spokane.

On the panel devoted to "Education," led by Arthur A. Hood, were such well-known educators as Wilson Comp-

ton, president, Washington State College; Dean Davis, School of Forestry, Montana University; Dean Gordon Marckworth, College of Forestry, University of Washington; Wm. C. Bell, Western Retail Lumbermen's Association; Dr. Merrill E. Deters, College of Forestry, IJniversity of ldaho.

Dean Jeffers, College of Forestry, University of ldaho, was the leader of the panel on "The Future of Wood" made up of Winston H. McCallum, Douglas Fir Plywood Association; Dr. Ernest Hubert, Monsanto Chemical Company; Art Anderson, Western Pine Association ; Stuart Moir, W'estern Pine Association.

In each discussion the capable members of the three panels received the rapt attention of the audience which was given the opportunity of asking questions following the presentation of the subjects. Delegates \vere warm in their praise of the manner in which the programs were organized and carried out.

An outstanding event in the long list of entertainments was the Lumberjack Dinner, served woods style and in logger quantities. Prizes were awarded for the best dressed lumberjack. Lee Smith who acted as master of ceremonies, provided much amusement and several surprises. several surprises.

Dean Charles E. McAllister addressed the convention at the final banquet held in the main ballroom of the Davenport Hotel, at which James M. Brown, Rameses 33, acted as toastmaster. A dance followed which marked the end of the convention festivities.

Southern California District Has Record Volume FHA Loans

Commitments issued by the Southern California District Offices of the Federal Housir.rg Administration during the first eight months of 1947 surpassed the volume for any previous l2-monfh period since the inception of FHA in 1934, the previous annual high of $123,776,120 obtained in 1941.

A total of $141,411,800 rvorth of mortgages, representing 19,869 dwelling units, was committed on during the period, which involve projects to be nervly constructed with benefit of FHA inspect.ions during construction; the remainder, or 2,675 units for mortgages totaling $15,816,400, covers properties which had been.constructed prior to submission of application for mortgage insurance to the FHA.

Leading ,il this volume of commitments for insurance of mortgages under all titles of the National Housing Act, Mr. N{cGoygrn explained, were those filed under Title VI, Section 603, involving properties of from one- to fourfamily units, with a total dollar value of mortgages of $1 12,338,300, and a total of 15,1.24;1,261 of rvhich are rental units.

In addition to the Section 603 commitments of this volume, Section2O3, Title II, also.1- to 4-family du'elling unit projects, recorded 289 du'elling units to be nervly constructed involving mortgages valued at $2,111,800, of u'hich 15 are rental units.

Section @8 of Title \rI, projects containing eight or more dwelling units, accounted for 1,781 of the units rvith mortgages valued at $11,145,300. Cor-rstruction has already started on 926 of these units u'ith a mortgage r.alue of $6,046,400, with the rernaining 855 units to begin construction rvithin the next ferv rveeks.

French Doorr \(/anted In New Homes

If orvners are free to express their preferences, nearly half the nerv homes to be built rvill have French doors. This fact is brought out by a nation-wide survey conducted by Ponderosa Pine \\roodu'ork.

A total of 45.7 per cent of the survey respondents said that they rvere definitely planning to include French doors in their nerv homc. Explaining this high percentage, it is pointed out that French doors actually fulfill a three-fold function in the home. With their large glass areas, such doors admit a maximum of light, permitting rooms to be shut off rvithout darkening them. Second, French doors are an expression of the rvell-knor'vn trend toward more glass areas in the home; and, third, such doors add a note of cheerful elegance and an extra fillip to the interior decorative scheme.

Change is constant . . . in taste .. . in design . . in usage. \What was standard yesterday is out-moded today . . lost sight of tomorrow. fl Aware of these natural forces, we have responded with an unceasing effort to keep our major products in step with current trends. This has been done through close observation of what the public wants and by determining, through our own research and willingness to adapt manufacturing methods, how those wants are to be answered. fT As a result, we developed and have proved through the use of millions of feet, subjected to severest wear, a notable improvement in flooring manufacture . namely, Brad.ley Pre-fi.ni.shed (STRAIGHT-LtNE) Harduood Flooring. ll Acceptance thus accorded this product has shown the old adage, "A Better Mousi Trapi' still holds good.

1T Bradley's leadership not only has perfected a constructive advancement in hardwood flooring, but, in doing so, it has created through that product the means of increasing your share of the hardwood flooring market. ''ll For specifications quotations and sales aids, justtelephone the Bradley representative nearest you, or address:
