fiuorro ABovE are a few excerpts from scores of !f lutt.rr from distributors and dealers who are enthusiastic about the new Simpson Insulating Building Board. They like the new building board its struotural strength . its new tapestry-like finish its paint color and its uniformity and general high quality. Only complaint from distributor and dealer alike is that ,they are not getting enough. Every letter and telegram says, ". ship us more." This we are trying'to do. We are stepping up production at our new plant as shortages of equipment will permit. Our technical field service is available ,to architects, builders and dealers without charge.

No man and no nation ever became great the easy way. The greatness of this country was based on the fact that we put a premium on ability, on efficiency, on productiveness, and good old American ambition did the rest. That's how the Abraham Lincolns, the Henry Fords, the Thomas Edisons, and the Benjamin Franklins happened. That's how the United States happened. The Merit System made America.

What this country needs today more than any other one thing is more of the Merit System. (Come to think of it, that's what the entire world needs.) This is the system that made this country great, and rich, and strong, the envy of the rest of the world. This system simply says that genius, thrift, industry, sweat, frugality, ambition, integrity, productiveness, and excess thinking and doing shall be proportionately rewarded.

Robert L. Garner, vice president of the International Bank, said in a few words what others have taken carloads to try and say, about the condition of the world, economically. In a public add'ress he said: "Recovery from the devastation of war can come only by more work, not less; by longer hours, not shorter; by sacrifice, by pulling together. The hopes of .l .l.t**ay out, are dying hard."

Constitution Day marked the 160th birthday of the Constitution of the United States. Millions of our citizens paused to give thought to the fact that ours is the only Constitution in the world which has enjoyed uninterrupted continuity for 160 years. It is our job to preserve and perpetuate it. Many beautiful thoughts were spoken and printed on Constitution Day, celebrating the occasion. Of all those I read, this one made the biggest hit with me. Judge William R. McKay told an audience that: "The Constitution is the SILENT SENTINEL which stands as a guardian of the liberties and the rights of every American citizen." Mr. Gladstone said that our American Constitution is "the greatest of uninspired productions." A noted American jurist called it "the greatest thought Lver struck from the intellect of man* at*a single blow."

There is always great dignity in the language of Herbert Hoover. For instance, he was talking of our foreign affairs, and said: "It is impossible for this nation to continue spreading its largesse without evil consequences to our stability." What he meant was that if we don't stop dumping our resources by the billion we'll go busted. Because, as Bugs Baer so well says: "No fireman can hold a safety net and jump into it, too."

George Marshall, holding his top diplomatic job, still retains the straight tongue ofa soldier, and when he speaks there is no sign of double-talk. In a recent speech he made these remarks: "Any government which maneuvers to block the recovery of other countries cannot expect help from us. Furthermore, governments, political parties, or groups, which seek to perpetuate human misery in order to profit therefrom politically or otherwise, will encounter the opposition of the United States."

Watching the goings-." a ,r. United Nations meetings, it is difficult to remember that every member, in signing the San Francisco charter, ag to the following: "To re-affirm rights of men develop frelation g nations, based on respect rights and self-determination of people. to the threat or use of force against state." Perhaps we should print the above words in large type on the front wall of the U.N. assembly chamber, as a reminder to those who have so completely turned their backs on this pledge.

According to the statistics I read, the farmer is sharing to a greater extent than he ever did before, in the present high tide of prices and profits. In the past we have always spoken well of the farmer, but, like the weather, we have never done much about it. Today the farmer is top man, from the standpoint of cash as well as usefulness. Dr. Samuel Johnson once said: "If we estimate dignity by immediate usefulness, agriculture "iS undoubtedly the first and noblest science." Chatfield w/ote: "Agriculture is the noblest of alchemy;\ it turns efrth and even manure into the additional reward of health." Daniel We founders of civilization." the ages wise men have economically the tiller of the soil has been in something of the position of the educator-generally underpaid. Today, for the first time since I can recall at any rate, the farmer is getting a stout share of the wealth he produces. We may not like the prices we are paying for farm products, but most fair-minded people will agree that there is some justice in the share the farmer is getting. {.*!k

For it is the law over there now-and has been since the late war started-that a golf course has a choice to be either plowed up to plant food crops, or opened up for live stock to graze on. So the golf courses are mostly sheep pastures and golf courses combined, and the golfers must accept the hazard of the sheep. It was a choice of playing golf among the sheep, or not playing golf at all. There is said to be some debate among the British as to whether golf among the sheep is better than no golf. Annucl Meeting December 6th

The Northern California Section of the Society of American Foresters will hold its annual meeting December 6 at the Sir Francis Drake Hotel, San Francisco, California.

The day's program will feature a discussion of wood utilization and its effect on forest management; and the effect of California's population (present and future) on its natural resources. The meeting will be followed by a banquet and entertainment.

Foresters, lumbermen, members of the Society, and others interested in the forests of California are invited.

"No. What do I want playing cards for?"

Jake said: "They might save your life. I always carry a pack when I'm huntin' alone. If you git lost, just sit down an' start playin' a game o' solitaire. Before you know it some fool will pop up behind;you an'begin tellin' you what card to play next."

Hardwood Reservoirs

President of the National \Tholesale Hardwood Distribution Yard Association

Address deltvered at the annual convention of the National Hardwood Lumber Association, Chicago, lll., Sept em6er 19, 1947

I was verv happy '*'hen John McClure asked me to address this Convention, because, in a general industry discussion such as this, I also had something that I wanted to say. Although my particular efforts have always been in the interest of the Hardwood Distributidn Yard, and it w'as about them that I was thinking when I approached this platform, I do want to observe that I have never failed to be impressed at these meetings with the magnitude of this great Hardwood Industry, and tl-re enthusiastic support of this Association.

No contribution by the Hard',n'ood Distribution Yards to this industry can, in my opinion, be of more importance than the fact that these yards have become through normal distribution and custom, the Hardwood Reservoirs of this Iumber business. In this capacity, these yards, located at strategic points throughout the United States, as well as Canada, have a duty and a responsibility that to the best of my knowledge and belief, thev have discharged with all their energy in the sincere interest of the entire industry. I l-rave referred to these operations as the "Hardwood Reservoirs." A reservoir has a dual function. It absorbs, or reserves a part of the florv of water or lumber or goods in normal times, at a locality r,vhere it is most needed, and also when the demand becomes greater than the flow, it serves 1o supplement this florv to those rvho need it most. In this Hardwood Lumber Industry, the Distributing Yard performs just that function primarily, but the attendant responsibilities and operating mechanics are a little more complicated.

These yards, scarcely more than a hundred in number at the end of the war, have been in existence for many, many years. The first was established in 1798. Nearly 40/c ol them are members of the National Hardrvood Lum-

ber Association's 30 year honor roll. They annually move approximately 250 million feet of high grade hardwoods to industrial users in lots of generally 5 thousand feet or less, and have many millions of dollars invested in lumber and in their sheds and other properties.

Many industrial plants and factories do not have the facilities for handling carload lots of lumber or cannot anticipate their needs to that extent. These yards store diversified sto,cks for the industry close to the consuming industrial markets. When demand is not as great as supply, when competition for existing markets is keen with those who would substitute other materials for hardwoods, the men who operate these yards are lumber's champions. They have nothing to sell but lumber. Their yards are the "show windows" of the industry. Their very existence is predicated on the use of lumber, and they daily exert their efiorts and ability by instructing potential customers, not only on merits of lumber, but more particularly on the kind and grade of lumber that will best suit the purpose for which it is to be used. The material is there, at hand, for their inspection and comparison, and for immediate delivery even though such a sale may frequently develop a carload buyer for direct mills shipments' The salesmen of the Wholesale Distribution Yard are specialists, trained and experienced in the utility of the various species for particular purposes.

In addition they perform a unique service, in that a single customer may secure from their supply several items of hardrvoods originating in widely separated geographical localities or "special rvidths or lengths" rvhich, while needed in limited cluantities only, may be essential from the standpoint of consumer satisfaction and therefore ber-reficial from an industrv standpoint. Hardwood Reservoirs

(Continued from Page 14)

you an excerpt from a letter written by one of our large automobile manufacturing plants. It is typical of many which we have received. I quote, "We do not maintain large stocks of this material and are unable to anticipate species and thicknesses which may be required. Were we to endeavor to purchase direct from producer, much time would be lost, inasmuch as no one producer can supply all the species, and we have, for a nutnber of years, been dependent upon Wholesale Distributing Yards to supply our demands," end of quote.

It is nothing exceptional for industrial users, shipyards, or Government dgencies, to send their representatives to these yards to familiarize themselves with a certain kind or grade of lumber, or make actual working comparisons, with several different kinds.

When the demand for lumber is great, when many items are difficult to loqate, when anyone can sell a desirable item (and even many undesirable items) these Distribution Yards, these Hardwood Reservoirs become of even greater importance to the Industry, from the standpoint of holding its expanding markets. Not only do they continue to "sing the praises of lumber" to the consuming markets, and to'help them in a proper selection, but they advise them and instruct them in the selection of substitutes for immediately unavailable items, and fill in the gap between consumer necessity requirements, and mill shipments. No better example of such service can be found than that pertormed ,by the Wholesale Distribution Yards during the war. Despite the magnificent job done by our sawmills, and all other branches of the industry, the reservoir of hardwood stocks in the Distribution Yards were of tremendous value to the various consuming Government Agencies, on emergency requirements, and completion of schedules. In 1945 one agency of the Government alone procured over 51 million feet of badly needed material from 54 of these yards. Many an industrial operation or schedule was saved from a shutdown by the temporary assistance from such yards when heavy shipping schedules and transportation difficulties caused unavoidable delays in rnill shipments.

Under such conditions dryness of lumber also becomes of critical concern to the users of this material. Some mills, handicapped by labor or equipment problems, burdened by

an over demand for their product, have no choice but to ship their lumber green. This, however, mav not be to the satisfaction of many of our lumber users. Under these conditions, and at the present time, the Distribution Yard cannot offer a complete solution but certainly they do help and do perform an additional service. In their reservoir of material they do have lumber that has been on sticks for various lengths of time, and in most instances a limited quantity at least of air dried, if not kiln clried stock. Here again the customer can at least come and see the material, make his own decision, and we have retained his good will.

Today, although the 'ivar has been over for trvo years, the demand for hardr, vood lumber remains high. Uses have been found for wood that we did not dream could exist until developed under a war-time necessity. We have regained markets lvhich, a few years ago, we feared might be lost and have added to these. new markets which can still be expanded. We must hold these new markets and rve cannot hold them against competitive lines unless we can, through production, and orderly distribution, supply our consuming trade rvith the kind of lumber best suited for their purpose, in the quantities required, and with a visible supply of the'many grades and species at hand when needed. The men who operate Distribution Yards think that they can continue to make a substantial contribution towards this. They cannot operate efficiently, efficiently for the industry as a whole, without the cooperation of the sawmill operators. They cannot complete the job efficiently .ivithout the continued efiorts and cooperation with the thousands of retailers in this country.

The drain on the reservoirs has been excessive in recent years. The supply in many industrial centers has been, and still is, dangerously lorv. Every time an established customer or potential user is turned away, rr'e run the chance of losing a customer for the hardl, vood industry. It is too easy to disregard this under existing conditions. Without the maintenance and efficient operation of our Hardwood Reservoirs, throughout the country, we would be at a disadvantage both in a buyers and a sellers market. These yards are numerically small but, nevertheless, a most vital part of the Hardwood Lumber Industry. Probably no other grotlp in the industry is as close to the users of hardr, voods as are the Distribution Yards and their salesmen. They are fully aware of their responsibility to you and oroud of their contribution.

As Lewis Browne says-"Wherever there is a man, there seems likely to be a god; where there is human life, there is also faith. Yes, as far back as we search they find in nearly every faith: a story of creation; a messiah, often of virgin birth, and frequently he is put to death; a flood that covers the earth; and most of the'other familiar fundamentals of our present day faiths. There is nothing new about them. The essence of the Golden Rule was old before Christianty was even dreamed of."

Building Kitchen Cabinets

Sierra Lumber Products, 404 S. Arroyo Parkway, Pasadena 2, Calif., is building a line of kitchen cabinets. All cases are stock items. All drar, vers and doors are flush with the face of the cabinets, in line with the modern trend in design. There are no lips or other projections to gather dust or break off, and by a new method of drawer support all cross rails are eliminated between drawers. This permits an extra drawer to each drawer section. The cases are so designed that rvhen the adjoining cabinets are glued and nailed together they will not show cracks at the joints, and will appear as one unit. Descriptive folder with specifications may be had by writing Sierra Lumber Products at the address given above.

Manufactured in a grade durable Douglas fir plyu.ood job.

In the transportation field of railroad jobs, streamlined bodies.

Transportation With Plywood

for every construction use, has stepped in to do many a

it has proven itself in scores buses, moving vans and truck

Box cars must be built to "take-it" and when Great Northern selected Douglas fir plywood as the sheathing ma,terial lor 2,NO nerv cars )'ot1 can be sure that plywood, too, must be able to stand the most rigorous possible service. Douglas fir plywood was thornughly tested for strength, durability and t,oughness before r.vork began.

Steel was used to form the ends and frames of the cars, and on the outside, panels of Exterior type Douglas fir plyr, vood (rnade rvith completely rvaterproof binder) rvere placed vertically extending in one panel from the bottom to ,the top. Vertical joints betrveen the 4 x 10 foot panels rvere covered lty thin metal strips and bolted through to lumber studding. At horizontal joints, panels were riveted through to lumber stiffeners. Interior walls and ceiling r'vere completely lined rvith plyrvood, with the panels placed horizontally-adding to the tightness of the cars and providing protection against dust and cinders. These ply.lr'ood cars average trvo tons lighter than conventional cars.

Utilization of plyrvood for construction ofa bus for Santa Fe Trailu'ays likervise has resulted in a sturdy, dependable vehicle rvith smooth, clean lines. The entire exterior and interior, including the roof , is covered .ivith rl-inch plvu'ood, glued and screrved to the carlines, purlines and upright members. A11 of the super-structure is constructed ,of seasoned ash lumber.

Another example of plywood's serviceability in the transportation field is that afforded by plywood lined trailers of the Spokane-Pacific Truck Line is typical of a number of units used for hauling perishables in the west. They are used for hauling dressed meat between Portland, Ore., and Spokane, Wash. The trailers are 24-feet long, 8-feet high and 8-feet r,r'ide. Ouarter inch Douglas fir plywood is used to line the walls and ceilings. A Carbonic Control

Corporation refrigerator unit is enclosed in plywood in the ftont end of the trailer and furnishes 6@ cubic feet of chilled air per minttte to keep the interior at a given temperature. Builders say the plyu'ood saved considerable expense in construction of the "reefers" and is as strong as steel for u'alls and ceiling.

The popularity of Douglas fir plyrvood increases yearly because it is both economical and versatile. It is engineered for strength, each plv being cross iaminated rvith adjacent plies. It has no plane of cleavage, cannot be split, and pound for pound is stronger than steel.

Fritz Hawn, Northu, est Lumber Co., Dallas, Texas, formerly rvith Hammond Redrvood Co., and Coos Bay Lumber Co., in Los Angeles, was recently in California on vacation. He attended the S.M.U.-Santa Clara football game at San Francisco, September 27, visited friends in the San Francisco Bav district. and flerv to Portland.

New Pocket-Size Lumber Grcding Mcrnucrl

The new pocket manual "Practical Grading and Tallying," for grading Douglas fir, pine and other Western softwoods, although just recently off the press, has been welcomed by those who desire to learn a new skill in the lumber industry, and also by experienced graders who find this up-to-date condensed guide most useful in their work.

The author is Stephen W. Agee of Empire, Oregon, whose regular business is lumber inspector for the Pacific Lumber Inspection Bureau.

The book is divided into three parts, (1) Elementary Grading; (2) Advanced Grading, and (3) Generally-used Crayon Marks and Standard Abbreviations.

The manual is not intended to replace the larger and more complete grading texts. It is an introduction and a supplement to them, and for all practical purposes gives the fundamentals and the basic information.

The book costs $2.00 per copy, or $1.20 per copy in lots of six or more, and can be obtained from Norwood Publishers, 902 First Avenue, Seattle 4, Wash.

Los Angeles 1947 Community Chest

Com,bining 159 health, welfare, veterans', and youth agencies, which would otherwise conduct separate campaigns in the Los Angeles area, 46,000 volunteer workers in the 35 associated cities and towns of the Welfare Federation will campaign starting October 15 for $7,322,240, it was announced by Edward R. Valentine, general campaign chairman for the combined Red Feather appeals.

The 1947-48 goal represents six months study by 121 volunteer budget committee members drawn from business, labor, civic groups, and service organizations. At a recent joint meeting of campaign leaders, budget committee members, and the Federation board of directors the budget was unanimously approved as a minimum need.

Meeting Date Chcrnged

The date of the next nleeting of the San Francisco Lumbermen's Club has been changed to Monday, October 27. Wayne Rawlings, the new president, will preside.

Probable \Testern Pine Consumption For Fourth Quarter of 1947

f'ortlancl, Ore., September 3O'--An analvsis of third quarter 1917 ntanufacture of Idaho \Vhite Pine, Ponderosa I'ine, Sugar Pine and associated u,oods and probal;le fourth qrlarter 1947 consurnption r,vas released today by S. V. Fullau'a1', Jr., secretarylmanager', \\Iestern I'ine Associa.tion. ,fhe statement in full is as follorvs:

"Thircl cluarter lumber shipments from the Westem Pine region rvill apparentlv total 1736 million feet as compared tcr the Jute 27th forecast of 1750 million. Thi.s represents a 5.11b decline from the same 1946 period. Regional shipnrents for the year to date are now estimated as 4666 million or 5.5/o ahead of those for the first tl.rree quarters of last yea.r.

"Itegional production of 1963 million during tire third quarter ts 3.7 /" under that for the same 1946 quarte r. For the first 9 months <fi 1947, a total regional output of 4t390 rrrillirin feet is inclicate<l. 'Ihis is :r gain of 7.3t/a o,ler the same 19.1(r period.

"I-umber stocks ir-r the region <ir.r September 30th are up 227 million from Jule 30th. following thc nominal seascnal trend, and 221 million above tl-rose on September 30, 1916. This increase from a year ago is primarily the result of the changed demand for rvell seasoned lumber ancl the consecluent larger inventories, particularly of species other than the pines, necessar)' for air seasoning. In addition the car sholtage has contributed to the situation.

"Based upon all availal>le information, it now seems probable that during the fourth cluarter of 1917 shipments (consumption) of lnml>er by the \\restern Pirre industry rvill approxinrate 1336 million feet or about l2/o ttnder the same 19.16 qualter. On this basis totzrl 1947 regional shipments n'ill exceed 6 billion feet, u'hich rvould be l/o hiqher than the 1946 total."

Dudley M. Steele on Southern Trip

Covering eleven Southern states, Dudley M. Steele, president of Acme Sa-*h lJalance Company, I-os Angeles, Calif., is on a sales and goocl u'ill tour rvhicl-r rvill include stops at Tucson, Arizona; El Paso, San Antonio, IIouston, Shreveport, Atlanta, Concord, No. Carolina, Chattanooga and Memphis.

NIr. Steele 'ivill visit rvitl-r officials of present Acme outlets and rvill investigate the possibility of adding additional Acme representatives.

This su'ing through the South is part of an expanded sales promotion campaign recently inaugurated by Acme and u,hich is receiving special regional emphasis during tl-re fall and u'inter uronths.

Tclks At Eugene Meeting

Dave Davis, manag'er of the rvholesale department, Union l-umber Company, San Francisco, receirtly spent three rveelcs in the Northl'est. He attended the }{oo-Hoo annual convention in Spokane, and rvas present at the big Concat held in Eugene, Oregon, September 19. .. . As Outflned fn New U.5. Commerclal Slandard CS 45-47

Nrw SuxDARDs of performance and serviceability are now incorporated in every panel of Interior.type Douglas fir plywood.
