THE CALIFOR}'IIA LUMBERMERCHANT

Striking operating engineers on October Z2 voted' to accept the offer of their employers, thus ending the rock, sand and gravel walkout that idled thousands of building and construction craftsmen and held up millions of dollars worth of construction in the Los Angeles area. The union called the strike on October 3 over its demand for six paid holidays. The new contract, it was stated, provided for an increase ol 2l cents in hourly wages and longer paid vacations for employees with two years or more of service. Work was resumed in the gravel pits on October 24.

The lumber market continues firm. The freight car shortage in the fir region, which has been curtailing lumber shipments at the mills, was reported to have eased up some during the past week.

The Western Pine Association for the week ended October 15, 95 mills reporting, gave orders as 74,026,000 feet, shipments 69535,000 feet, and production 71,242,0N feet. Orders on hand at the end of the week totaled 236,695,W feet.

The Southern Pine Association for the week tober 8, 93 units (116 mills) reporting, gave 18,128,000 feet, shipments 17,938,000 feet, and 16,480,000 feet. Orders on hand at the end oi totaled 51,806,000 feet.

Ocorders as production the week

Correction

In the Chapco Sales full page advertisement that appeared in the October 15 issue, the address of G. K. Wentworth, their California representative, was given as 501', ': Geary Street, San Francisco. This was in error and should have been 501 Taylor Street, San Francisco.

Patten-Blinn Lumber Company . . . o $ince 1880

Almost everyone in Southern California is familiar with this heading and most everyone agrees that the men anci women who operate Patten-Blinn are easy to deal with, there is a surety about them that is based upon experience. Thesc folks have worked together so long their experience acts cumulatively, and the resources of Patten-Blinn's 24 yards and eight hundred employes are quickly concentrated on customer needs.

Only time can weld together a group in this effective manner, and it is necessary to see the service records of PattenBlinn to understand this group characteristic.

The company president, E. C. Parker, was loading wagons at the Wilmington yard in the spring of 1914, thirty-five years ago. George Patten, vice president, was born in the business and is the founder's grandson and namesake. Vern Sutlifr, treasurer, started in the yard at Seventh and Reo in 1918. l-eslie G. Lynch, director of sales, was a yardman in the Blinrr vard at 1650 So. Alameda Street in 1916;the yard fronted on Alameda and directly in back of thern was a young and struggling company, Blue Diamond Corporation, who now occupy 23 acres at this address. Pete Baumgartner, J. K. Lawler, D. D. Sutherin, llarry Owen, C. W. Ward, Marion Welch, Archie Price and L. H. Scott are all in office management circles and after each name should be, "began in the yard." The average years of each in Patten-Blinn service totals thirtyseven and a half. Dean of them all is Archie Pric'e, member of the sales force for fifty-four years.

Company history goes back to 1880 when L. W. Blinn opened a lumber yard in Tombstone, Arizona for C. A. Hooper of San Francisco. Patten & Davies Lumber Company opened a yard in Pasadena in lB94 and both companies entered the Los Angeles market in the nineties about a block apart near Second and Central Avenue. Not until 1931 did the companies merge their total of thirty five yards under the management of founder George Patten's sons, Henry S. and F. \ I. Patter-i.

Directing management today is composed of personnel from both companies.

The main office at Fifth and San Pedro Street is downtown Los Angeles' only lumber yard and this location has been a lumber yard since 1883. Patten-Blinn's yards are supported by tlvo company owned sawmills in Oregon, an up-to-the-minute water front distributing plant at Wilmington, California, and one of the coast's largest and best equipped sash, door and millwork plants located in the Vernon district.

Although the very essence of Patten-Blinn is lumber and they are constantly strengthening their position in this field, they have not overlooked opportunities in allied lines and

A haze on the far horizon, The infinite, tender sky, The ripe rich tints of the corn fields And the wild geese soaring high; And all over upland and lowland, The charm of the goldenrod; Some of us call it AutumnBut others call it-God.

,< * **-'carruth'

Innumerable words of charm have been written and uttered concerning the fall of the year, with all its impressive loveliness, but the above is my entry for the season's best. Ever drive along a highway after the first frost of the season and feast your eyes on a Black Gum tree? If not, you have missed something inspiring. The leaves range in color from the darkest ox-blood to the lightest pink and flaming red. Breath-taking, even though you are not an artist.

When Joyce Kilmer *r"r.--n" ageless poem that begins -"f think that I shall never see a poem lovely as a tree" -he must have had in mind a hillside of hardwoods in the autumn, after the leaves had turned to their riot of fall colors; that season of beauty "when reapers sing among the garnered sheaves." You realize the extreme paucity of the English language when you try to describe such a scene' * * *

And autumn ushers in another season of importance, and consequence, and deep emotion to the American people. It is the season of giving; the Community Chest season. All over this land men and women are now going forth among their fellows, gathering funds to be used in the coming year to help those rvho live among us who cannot help themselves. It is a noble cause, a noble work-and a vitally necessary one. In days of old that portion of the population who sat at the gates of the city and cried aloud for alms and for pity, were treated with scorn. Today they are the wards of the Community Chest, helped in civilized fashion by the joint efforts of men and.women who care.

Throughout the land In."J**unity Chest effort is being explained and professed by countless men and women uttering pleas f.or organized compassion. The work is being admirably done, the cause is being inspiringly presented. I have been hearing and reading these pleas, appearing in all the magazines and newspapers, and coming in over the air waves. Long ago I presided over Community Chest drives for some thirteen consecutive years,

and it is a thing that stays in your blood. Today one of my daughters is a Community Chest speaker-and loves it.

The other day r pi"k; ,]o I 0"n.. and my eye was caught by a Community Chest page. Here Herbert lloover was asked the question that every citizen may ask himself just now, which is, "Why should I give to private charities?" And his reply should be a textbook for every Community Chest worker, speaker, and thinker, for it resembles a masterpiece on the subject. He said, in part:

"Many citizens "rr. arr"L"lrrJ"r io, what reasons must we continue to support the voiuntary agencies? Why not let the government do it all? The first short answer is that you cannot retire from the voluntary field if you wish our American civilization to survive. The essence of our self-government lies outside of political government. Ours is a voluntary society. The fabric of American life is woven around our tens of thousands of voluntary associations. That is, around our churches, our professional societies, our women's organizations, our businesses, our labor and farm organizations-and not least, our charitable institutions. That is the very nature of American life. The inspirations of progress spring from these voluntary agencies, not from bureaucracy. If these voluntary activities were to be absorbed by government bureaus, this civilization would be over. Something neither free nor noble would take its place. * >k *

(Hoover continues) "The greatest and, in fact, the only impulse to social progress is the spark of altruism in the individual human being. 'But the greatest of these is charity' has been a religious precept from which no civilized people can depart without losing its soul' Governments practice charity solely because it rises from that spark in the hearts of the people. The day when 4ltruism in the individual dies from lack of opportunitv for expression, it will die in the government. At best, charity by government must be formal, statistical, and mechanistic. We need charity in the real sense-from the heart.

(Hoover continues) "t;. ;"; is in the grip of a death struggle between the philosophy of Christ and that of Hege and Marx. The philosophy of Christ is a philosophy of compassion. The outstanding spiritual distinction of our civilization from all others, is compassion. With us, it is the noblest expression of man. Those who serve receive an untold spiritual benefit. The day we decide that the government is our brother's keeper, that day the spirit of compassion will have been lost. If we abandon private

A generation ago I used to go about the country as guest speaker, talking to Community Chest groups: The Com' bits to help relieve a starving family. Calvin Coolidge once uttered these memorable words, "We do not need more material ilevelopment, we need 'more spiritual development. We do not need more intellectual power, we need more moral power. We do not need more knowledge, we need more character. We do not need more government, we need more culture. We do'not need more liw, we need r4ore religion. We do not need more of the things that are seen, we need rnore of the things that are unseen. There is in the people themselves the power to Put fofth great men. There is in the soul of the nation a reseive for iesponding to the call of high ideals, to nobility.of action, which has never-yet been put forth. THERE IS NO PROBLEM SO GREAT BUT THAT SOMEWHERE A MAN IS BEING RAISEI) TOMEETTT.', * * *

Said Theodore Roosevelt, "We, here in America, frold in our hands the hope of the world, the fate of the coming : years; and shame and disgrace will be ours if in our eyes the light of high resolve is dimmed, if we trail in the dust , the golden hopes of men. If on this new continent we lii,, m"r"iy build another country of great but urijustly divided :-t material prosperity, we shall have done nothing; and we shall do as little if we merely set the greed of envy against the greed of arrogance, and thereby destroy the rnaterial well-being of all of us." ***

"Luck," said Max O'Rell, "means the hardships and privations which you have ndt hesitated to endure; the iong nights you have devoted to work. Luck means the "ppoit t*"t ts you have never failed to keep, the trains you have never failed to catch."

Bruce Barton, author, philosopher, top-gi*1r* advertising 't executive, always comes up with thoughts deserving of rclr,'.',,:.d; spect and deep consideration.' munity Chest was fairly new in those days. I recall a neither Communism nor Socialism can ever give to the :fj story I used to tell in those speeches that was always a hit $'ith the Chest workers. ft was about a miser who died and went to the gates of Heaven, where he was stopped by St. Peter, who demanded to know what good works he had done on earth that would entitle him to enter here. After much deep ttrought and head scratching' the miser

There are signs of improvement in some ways. Back in 1934 Captain Eddie Rickenbacker, American ace of all, aces who shot down 36 German planes in World War One and became a great national hero, was muzzled when hc didn't like the way the Constitution of the Unitcd States'ili was being kicked around, and tried to say so publicly. I{e: was not only forbidden to make speeches, but he was gtven a dressing down by one of the New Deal political pygmies '." for wanting to criticize the governrnent. Today Eddie iP going around the country making mighty fine speeches, ' and-this time no one is trying to muzzle him. **>F

He says that American politics, Communism, and matl's ' passion to get somethihg for nothing is at present a deadly trend in this country. He exhorts his hearers everywhere he goes to "get down on your knees every night as I do and thank God in heaven for our American heritage"' He exhorts his hearers to re-dedicate themselves and their children to the American heritage of "work, realism, sweag tears, and blood." Hc denounces Communism and Communists and fellow travelers in bitter terms, and says they have no place and no right here. He says too many Americans seem most interested in the Fifth Freedom-freedom from work, and that the most over-worked word- in the dictionary today is "security." And he concludes his remarks by saying that "Too many of our people want some-'' thing for nothing. It is a deadly trend. It may be too late now. Maybe we can only retard t'he trend' But we MUST try and do something about it." He makes a great 'i ] hit with his audiences.

The experience of Associated Plywood Mills dates from 1921. That is a long :ly young plywood time in the relatively industry-long enough to characerize Associated Plywood Mills as one of the pioneers in the development and growth of this important building product.

Patten-Blinn

(Continued from Page 4).

today finds them a veritable builders department store.

It's a far cry frqm early day lumber yard operation to Patten-Blinn's presgrit day merchandising and this interior photo of Patten-Blinn's new Santa Monica store affords a good illustration. Displayed are paints, roofing, floor covering, gypsum produtt samples, builders hardware, carpenters to6ls, almost everything needed for finishing a home' Kenneth Mitchell, yard manager, whose twenty-four years with the company is the average for yard managers, is photographed explaining the advantages ofa Heatilator fireplace unit.

Blue Diamond Corporation, distributors of Heatilators, credits Patten-Blinn with high volume in this product. This affords'a good example of the spread of Patten-Blinn merchandising. Heatilators are rhade of steel plate and are installed by masons; they insure fireplace design that will give efficient heating service and preclude chance of the fireplace becoming a smoky nuisance. It is self evident that Heatilators must be sold the home owner before construction begins.

Why Patten-Blinn Lumber Company should have a -higtr volume in this product is a matter of interest, Pete Baumgartner, city sales manager, explains; "I{eatilators are one of many items we handle to round out our general service to builders, contractors, and home owners. Heatilators are nationally advertised and well lorown and our job is one of proper display and informing prospects of its many fine features. Our experience has been that Heatilators are a par-

ticularlv attractive item

for the present-day lurnb'er aot

due to their rapid turnover, substantial profits and sales vo! ume. Heatilators add little to fireplace costs, afford a'lifetime of service and do not require anj' care after installation"'

Patten-Blinn have been a part of California's rapid growth and are deeply rooted; two wars.have upset their organizatiolt without deflecting them from their course, helping to build the Southland into one of America's finest living and producing regions.

Approves Extension of Program To Aid Frivate Housing

Washington, D. C., Oct. ll-The House Banking Committee yesterday approved a five-month extension of major portions of the Government's program to provide credit for privati horrsing construction. The Senate has alreadl' approved the measure which continues the program through February 1950.

As reported by the Banking Committee, the bill would give the Federal Housing Administration another 25 mil' lion to guarantee loans for home repair and modernization; $750 million for guaranteeing mortgages on one to fourfamily for-sale housing; $500 million to underwrite mortgages on large rental projects. The Federal National Mortgage Association would also be given another $1,0fi) million with which to buy insured mortgages from original lenders.

All these provisions were included in the bill passed by the Senate.

Those Knot Holes

"Kingfish" Castleman, veteran East Texas sawmill ope' rator, tells the following story and swears it is true. In his rendition he relates'the name of the hero of the tale, a well known lumber manufacturer, but we'will leave it out in this case, and just tell the tale as the "Kingfish'i relates it.

A big East Texas sawmill employed a large number of colored workers, most of whom were members of the same church. One unlucky night the church caught fire and burned to the ground; and the colored folks were without a meeting place. They raised all the money they could to rebuild the "church-house," as all negro churbhes are called, but it wasn't enough, so a delegation called on the mill owner. They wanted a donation of a lot of lumber. As they entered his office, they knelt in prayer, as is likewise usual custom in such cases' and they prayed for help.

The mill man promptly agreed to supply the lumber to complete the church, and the committee left rejoicing. When the lumber came it wasn't exactly the highest grade. In fact, by the time the church was finished the interior was sheeted with No. 3 and No. 4 stock. But they got it

finished, and then held a big dedicatory service in the new church the very first Sunday. The mill man and most of his key men attended the meeting in reply to the urgen! pleas of the colored folks. Special seats were arranged for the "white folks."

The preacher opened the meeting by calling on the mill man for some remarks. He came forward, said he was glad to have been of help and furnished the lumber, then took his seat. Then the preacher rose, and spoke: "White tolks, brethren and sistern, we has wid us tonight one of de greatest-men dis heah country has evah seen, dis gentman who jest spoke. He has made it possible fo us to have a roof ovah ouah haids tonight; an I want you to remembah, brethren and sistern an membahs of dis congregashun, dat in de yeahs t'come, long afteh dis good man has dopahted fum dis life, we may enter de threshold of dis heah tabernacle, an when ouah eyes rests upon de. walls an ceilings of dis place, DE KNOT HOLES IN DIS TABERNACLE WILL STAN OUT AS A MONUME.NT TO HIS MEMORY.''

Mr. Cox has been active in the Western Oregon lumber industry since 1907, and is now with the Reeves Taylor Lumber Co. of Eugene.

Chemical Brown Stain in Pine Digcussed At Dry Kiln Club Meeting \

The last meeting of the Central California Dry Kihr Club was held in September at the Collins Pine Company's mill at Chester, Calif.

Forty men enjoyed a lumberjack meal at the mess hall, and Elmer Goudy, general manager of the company, welcomed the group.

Bill Thexton of the Scott Lumber Company, Burney, Calif., president of the Central California Dry Kiln Club, presided at the business meeting, and was moderator during the afternoon's discussion of "Chemical Brown Stain in Pine."

Al O'Brien of the Collins Pine Company, who is in charge of the brown stain research being conducted ir'cooperation with the Western Pine Association, reported on their progress to date. The effect of bulk piling of green sugar pine 4/4 and 6/4 lumber on the development of chemical brown stain during subsequent kiln drying was found to be most pronounced, he said' Bulk storage of the green lumber for more than six days appears ttr make it more susceptible to stain during kiln drying, and storage of 14 days may cause degrade of over 50 per cent in 6/4 stock, he stated.

Carl Rasmussen, head of the Research Department of the Western Pine Association, indicated that the results of this series of experiments will be made available as each phase is completed.

The men examined the Collins Pine Company's kiln installation, and the new kilns being built.

The next meeting of the Club is scheduled for November 18 at the plant of McCloud River Lumber Company, McCloud, Calif. This will be a joint meeting with the Oregon Dry Kiln Club.

The strength of a timber can be determined more accurately by visual inspection than can that of any other technically determinate structural material.

Following the convention, tours of several of the Redwood mills have been arranged as well as a tour to Yosemite and Sequoia National Parks' There will be several committees of Northern California lumbermen who will see to it that the National Association visitors have a memorable staf in California.

O. Harry Schrader h. Named Managing Director o[ Douglas Fir Plywood Ats'n

'O. Harry Schrader Jr., 39, has been named the new managing director of the Douglas Fir Plywood Association, the trade Promotion organization of the l4-factory West Coast PIYwood industry, according to E. W. Daniels, chairman of the industry management committee and director of sales of Harbor Plywood Corp. of Hoquiam, Wash.

Schrader, who is director of-the State of Washington Forest Products Institute, will assume the new post December 15.

In making the announcement of the appointment, Daniels, speaking from the plywood association's Tacoma headquarters, cited Schrader's 15 years experience in building products merchandising and outstanding work in d.eveloping laminated wood products and new methods of wood utilization.

Schrader's experience in merchandising and sales-promotion of building materials includes several years work with retail dealers planning merchandising campaigns as regional executive of the Western Retail Lumber Dealer's Association' He is the author of a text used in dealer training courses at 19 universities and shared prominently in organizing, three years ago, college courses to train retail dealers in better salesmanship.

As director of the plywood association, Schrader will concentrate on carrying forward the sharply expanded plywood promotion which, during the past ten years, has vastly increased clemand for the panel material, raising it from a specialty category to a basic building commodity. One phase of the industry's new million dollar advertising program, whicir is just getting under way, calls for stimulation of plywood at consumer level through a schedule of advertisements in national farm and consumer publications.

In addition to sales promotion, the plywood association, which is supported by the plywood manufacturers' maintains quality of product through constant product inspection and testing as well as laboratory and field tests to explore new uses of the versatile panel material'

As head of the state-maintained Institute of Forest Products, Schrader directs the varied projects of the organization to further increase utilization of the forest resources of the nation and the development of new marketable commercial wood products. In addition to directing the forest products instiiute, he is also an associate professor of forest products at the IJniversity of Washington, where he is recognized as an educator whose teaching is founded on practical business experience as well as academic training.

He is also associated with Timber Structures, Inc', of Portland, Ore., and other cities in a consulting capacity' The finn is a large fabricator of beams and other wood structures, the producti being marketed throughout 'the nation as well as many foreign countries.

During the war, Schrader did research work for the CurtisWrighl Aircraft Co. and was director of a wartime project undert"Len jointly by War Production Board and Timber Structures to develop fabrication methods and use of glued laminated timbers. His work involved promotion among the nation's leading wood fabricators to establish acceptance of the then advanced-type structural material.

The new managing director of plywood industry promotion obtained his bachelor's degree in forestry products at University of Washington in 1931 ; he earned a master's degree at University of Wisconsin, during which time he did researcir work at the U. S. Forest Products Laboratory, followed by a doctorate from Yale UniversitY.

Schrader is a member of the following organizations an<i professional societies: Society of American Foresters, Forest Froducts Research Society, American Society of Testing Materials, American wood Preservation Association and Pacific Coast Building Officials Conference.

He succeeds Charles E- Devlin who resigned from the plywood association 60 days ago to become general sales manager of Simpson Logging Co. of Seattle.

For 50 years folks have said, "If lurnbermen would onll' do something about reforestatior"r. If lumbermen woulcl only plant a tree for every tree they cut. If "

For 50 years lumbermen and {oresters have been trying to fir-rd the ansu, ers to these and a thousand other tough conserr.ation questior.rs. A first thing learned rvas that a forestry idea. that rvorked in one region might be worse than useless ir-r another. In the West Coast mountains of the Douglas fir region, for example, forestry hacl to be adapted to the engineering problems of lumbering as rvell as to proltlems of tree species, soils and climate'

In the t,cek of October 9 foresters from all over the country attenclecl the national meeting of their professional organization, the Society of American Foresters, held in Seattle. "\\restern Recl Cedar f-umber" and "Sitka Spruce Lumber," second and third in the series of species pamphlets being published by the West Coast Lumbermen's Assoctation, are nou' available'

Attractively printed in tlvo colors, with numerous illustrations, the eight-page pamphlets briefly describe the properties and uses of lumber manufactured from the two species by West Coast sawmills.

Copies of "\Vestern Red Cedar Lumber" and "Sitka Spruce Lumber," which fit a No. 10 envelope, may be ob-

From soaring ridges and torvering peaks they gazed out over thousands upon thousands of acres in single operating units of the West Coast timber industry, some of them extending into national forests.

The visitors learned that in West Coast logging a given stand of Douglas fir needs to be clear-cut if a nerv crop of Douglas fir is to be obtained.

They learned that if many trees were left standing in the cutovers, "shade-tolerant" species would grolv, causing the firs to die out.

They saw that the leaving of blocks and strips of conebearing Douglas firs ou harvested lands, u'ith areas exposed to sunlight, woulcl fetch up the Douglas firs "as thick as the hair on a dog's back."

Such is the lesson of experience in Douglas fir forest er-rgineering. Appliecl on a giant scale, it provides reforestation today. promises plenty of tirnber for tomorrolv'

PovgrtY

"Poverty is uncomfortable, as I can testify;.but nine times out of ten the best thing that can happen to a young rnan is to be tossed overboard and compelled to sink or swim for himself."iJames A. Garfield.

If any little word of ours can make one life the brighter; If any little song of ourS can make one heart the lighter; God help us Speak that little word, and take our bit of qinging, Ana Jrof, it in some lonely vale, and set the qchoes ringing.

Serious GolI

Walter J. Travis, once American golf champion, was kqeq1r eg $9 1!!ost serious golfer." Once in a friendly match, th- gotf "o"3se lCd ttirough a lovely grove of tiees' in which a bird was singing his heart out. Said Ttavis' companion:

LiIe And Decrth

"Life is a narrow vale between the cold and barren peaks of two eternities. We strive in vain to look beyond the heights. We cry aloud, and the only answer is the echo oi our wailing cry. From the voiceless lips of the unreplying dead there comes no word; but in the night of death hope sees a star, and listqning love can heaq the rustle of a wing."

- Academic Freedom

Gov. Allen Shivers, of Texas, tells a story on a college professor he knows, who was awakened late one night by a student who was manifestly drunk, and who wanted to debate with him the matter of academic freedom. Sensing his caller's condition, the professor said: "If you will call me when you h'ave sobered up, I will be glad to discuss academic freedom with you."

"But, Professor;t' thi "stqdent said, "When I'm sober I don't give a danin about academic freedom."

Adversity

Adverslty is a medicine which people are rather fond o{ recommer(ding indiscriminately as a panacea for their neighbors. Like other medicines, it only agrees with certain constitutions. There are neryes which it braces, and. ierves which it utterly shatters.--Justin McCarthy; ':

Here are the steps which the lumber dealer may take to make the "Good Americah Homes" program work in his' community:

1. Fill out and mail the reply card attached to brochure and sent to dealers. This will bring the dealer the elevations and floor plans of the homes that have been developed for the program. It will also put the dealer in line trr receive the kit of newspaper, radio, and direct mail promotional materials now being tested in the Detroit area.

2. The dealer should attempt to get in touch with the Contractors Building and Loan or financial institution which will work with him and give them a preview of the program.

3. When the Elevation and floor plans of the proposed house afe received, the dealer together with the contractor, and financial institution should select the model home or homes that will be built in his. area. Ted Baldwin, Inc' should be notified which home or homes will be built so that the actual working drawings can be sent to the dealer'

4. At this point, the dealer program will be co-ordinated with the national program and Ted Baldwin will schedule a visit of one of his men to the lo.cal dealer area to set up meetings with the local newspaper, radio, store, charity, and movie participation, and to synchronize the whole program with the national effort.

5. The Publicity kit and fully tested materials will be made available to dealers sending in the feply cards'

The whole basis of this program is the furtherance of the "Industry Engineered Home Principles" and the selling of a home building budget theme to the American people under the slogan, "It's Easy to Own a Good American Home."

This program is scheduled to get under way January 15 in all.parts of the country where building is possible and to coniinue to sweep across the nation wherever conditiohs permit.Eachbuildinglocationwillbecoordinatedwitlr the national promotion as construction' is scheduled and keyed in with the nation-wide program'

The Dallas session opened at 9 a.m. on October 17 at the yard of the Cowser Lumber Company. Invitations were issued to every wholesale or commission representative of redwood in the Dallas area. The Union Lumber Company shipped a representative car of redwood which was placed on display by grade, pattern, and sizes, so that under the direction of John R. Included in the program was thc Association's new color and sound picture, "Sempervirens,,, and a new sound film entitled "Box Score," dealing wittr the properties of lumber, and a report by Mr. Bishop on the tremendous strides being made by redwood producers towards a perpetual supply of redwood lumber, using the

improved forestry and logging techniques.

The September figure r.r'as only fractionally larger than the total for August. and the outstanding clevelopment in the construction situation rr'as the contra-seasonal advancc in private homebuilding.

During the first 9 months of 1919, the total value of new construction amottnted to $14 billion, 1 per cent more than the total for the same period last year' according to the Department's Constrttction Division. While many types of private constructiott have dropped belou' the levels oI a year ago, pultlic construction has more than made up the difference.
