Much has been printed about the way in which large numbers of North Korean soldiers disappeared when the tide of battle surged in South Korea. One day there they were. The next day-where were they? Then a good humored philosopher figured the thing out. He said all a North Korean soldier had to do to disappear in South Korea was to shuck off his uniform, throw his rifle in the river, put on a rice sack and start whistling "Dixie" and saying "you all." ,

But there seems to be much evidence that "you all" didn't come from Dixie at all, but from the Bible. To prove it, turn to the Epistle which that master salesman and writer Paul sent to the Philippians, and in Verse 4 he

said: "Always in every prayer of mine for you all . ." Then in Verse 7,6ame chapter, lie wrote: "Everi as it is meet for me to think this of you all, because I have you in my heart." Then in the same chapter, Verse 8, he writes: "For God is my record how greatly I long after you all."

So it looks like "you all" didn't start in the South after all; that is, unless the Philippians were in the Southern part of Paul's territory.

Which brings to mind the story of the North Eskimo who called all the Eskimo girls "honey child" after he returned from his trip "way down South to Montreal."

Lumber Association Plans Hawaiian Convention

Announcement has been made bv the Lumber Association of Southern California that, through action of its Board of Directors, a business convention, will be held in Honolulu, Hawaii, beginning Saturday, February 3, through the following Sunday, February 10.

Tentative plans are now being made by Association president Terry Mullin and Executive vice president Paul Hollenbeck. It is stated that invitations to attend the

Hawaiian meet are being extended to all members of Southern California, Northern California and Western Associations, including the new wholesale division of lumbermen of Southern California.

Look for further news of this promising business convention in upcoming issues of CLM. This could well be one of the greafest events in the history of the participating Associations, and will no doubt create a big interest.

The only difference Ol,*i" J .ot urra a grave is the depth, so the old saw says. It is to the fearless who won't be held down and cannot be restrained that the lvorld owes all its forward forgings. Moses was of that type ; so was Jesus, and Buddha, and Confucius, and Socrates, and Galileo, and Cromwell, and Isaac Newton, and Roger Bacon, and George Washington, and Abe Lincoln, and Columbus, -and many of recent history such as Burbank, Edison, Henry Ford, and others.

Oh Lord, please give us a sense of humor in these trying times. Help us to meet our daily trials smilingly. For truly a sense of humor is the front and rear bumper, the shock absorbers on the motor car of life. Without humor we might shake to pieces. * * ,<

Distinguishing between the good and the bad man in wondrous fashion. William Sarovan makes one of his characters say (in "The Human C6medy") "The good man will seek to take the pain out of things; the evil man rvill drive pain deeper into things." \iv hai a wonderful measuring stick that would be to put upon world leaders of today. Driving pain deeper into things, and into the people of the world, seems to be the ambition of the Godless men who hog the headlines.

Shakespeare had it all over other writers like a circus tent over a sardine can, but when it came to prophecy he wasn't so hot. Witness the fact that in "Antony and Cleopatra" he wrote: "The time of universal peace is near." Perhaps it depends upon what he meant by "near."

Men of unbeautiful features can take satisfaction in recalling the historic fact that the greatest men in American history have often been the plainest of the plain. Lincoln was one of the homeliest men in history. Washington (don't let those pictures on the schoolroom wall fool you) was a rugged, plain featured man. Jefferson was a very homely red head, with one shoulder lower than the other. So was Ben Franklin, and Patrick Henry, and Henry Clay, and the list can go on and on. The handsomest great man in our history was probably Robert tr. Lee. Yet he was that manly and impressive type well exemplified today by General Douglas MacArthur. Both had that type of manly looks that is described in thoroughbred horses as "the look of the eagle."

Famous sayings: Nlark Twain was author of the famous remark that "difference of opinion is what makes horse races." Bob Fitzsimmons, weight 155 and about to fight for the championship against a 3@ pound warrior, handed dorvn the immortal remark that "the bigger they are the harder they fall." Napoleon once remarked that "God seems to favor the army with tl,e biggest cannon." Frank Leahey, famous football coach at Notre Dame, was quoted as saying that "prayers work better when the players are big." Cromwell gave posterity something to chew on when he told his men to "put your trust in God but keep your powder dry." And W. C. Fields left to posterity these two bits of advice : "Never smarten up a chump," and "never give a sucker an even break."

Southern California Cabinet Association Presents Annual Safety Awards

Thirty-seven enthusiastic cabinet inanufacturers gathered around the "lemonade stand" at Rudy's Italian Restaurant when the October 23 meeting of the Southern California Association opened. Each attending member "happily" reached into his pocket for the $5.00 dinner ticket and then sat down to enjoy a typical feast "a la Rudy's."

The exquisite menu included the following: Salad : a tempting mixture of smoked herrings, hot green peppers and salami; Soup De Jour: Spaghetti : Main Course : consisting of scrumptious sirloin tip, golden french fries and tempting mixed garden viegetables; and Dessert: cooling lime sherbet. If this sounds deliciouslt's because it was delicious. and everyone had a stretchedbelt to demonstrate his approval.

Following the dinner, president Dick Ruhoff opened the meeting by introducing attending guests. Af ter all guests had been properly introduced, Dick called on the speaker of the evening, J. Hillman, to present a comprehensive report on "Workmen's

Compensation Insurance." Mr. Hillman, a prominent representative of the State Compensation Insurance Fund, congratulated all cabinet members on their outstanding safety records. He then stated that the major problem facing the cabinet industry in the near future will be the loss of hearing among'employees, and that all cabinet manufacturers should be prepared to comply with forthcoming legislation on the control of noise in cabinet shops. Mr. Hillman further stated that disability payments and hospitalization benefits paid to employees have actually doubled during reient years, but that the cost of insurance had only risen a meager twenty-five percent.

At the conclusion of Mr. Hillman's speech, president Ruhoff requested that Sid Simmons (who generously contributed all plaques and safety awards) come to the podium and present the annnal safety awards. Sid Simmons announced that he would present a permanent plaque to the Cabinet Association rvhich would list the winners for each particular year. He then pre-

sented this year's First Place Safety Trophies to the following firms: Sawyer Cabinet, Inc., DeMarco Cabinet Manufacturing Co., Alexander Cabinet Co., Inc., Jackson Cabinet Shop, Fullerton Cabinet Works, Inc., and Martinez Cabinet Shop.

Sid presented Safety Au'ard Plaques to : Central Cabinet Co., Inc., Taylor Nlillwork and Stair Co., Inc., W. L. Rubottom Co., Hejlik Cabinet and i\,[illwork, Inc., Western Lumber and Woodworking Co., and Craft's Cabinet Shop.

President Ruhoff thanked Mr. Simmons for his thoughtfulness and introduced labor relations chairman, Dick Fenton. Dick advised all cabinet members to read their labor contracts thoroughly. He summarized his brief speech by saying that the friendships gained through the association made attending the meetings well worth while.

Following Dick Fenton's remarks, Dick Ruhoff concluded the meeting by requesting that everyone attend the association's next scheduled event.

Knollwood Hoo-Hoo No. 2 Meeting Features Oufstanding Enterfainment

It has been said that a picture is ' worth a thousand words. In this case, however, we hope that a few words are worth a thousand pictures as we en- 'deavor 'to report this story without pictures.

The wind blew and blerv again, but it did not succeed in uprooting the.' substantial Hoo-Hoo Golf Tourney players at Knollwood Country Club on November l7 as they competed in the , second round of the 54-hole contest. In spite of the forces of nature, the weary golfers maintained their relentless pace and eventually concluded their game in the Nineteenth Hole.

Several anxious hours later, the longawaited news came from Don Gow, golf chairman. Don stated that, the winners were as follows: Low Gross, Gene Burnett with an 80, Low Net, ' Don Swartzendruber with a 64. First 'Flight, first low net, Harold Cole, First Flight, 2nd low net, Bill llanen, Second Flight, 1st low net, Jin McFadden, Second Flight, second low net, John Hansen, Third Flight, Don Swartzendruber, Low Retailer, Bob Merritt, and Lor.v Guest, Bill Rau.

Following the golf phase of the evening, the members and guests gathered in the Knollwood Cocktail Lounge, where they were expertly entertained by "Francine," the popular accordionist. Ken Kenofel, the of6cial greeter for the big night, mingled among'the crowd and welcomed those attending. It seems that Kenny was even trying to talk "Francine" into being a Hoo-Hoo E,tte. Or, maybe he and Harold Cole u'ere just helping "Francine" in her beautiful version of "Srveet Adeline."

About this time, the big bad prexy, Joe Petrash, arrived on the scene and told the group to "knock it off" and "get into the dining room." The black cats quickly obeyed Joe's order and scurried into to devour their delicious steaks. One oerson said he counted 61 dinner-eaters, but he was so intoxicated by all the excitement that he couldn't even count the fingers on his right hand.

Just before dessert, president Joe introduced Mr. Orville Porter, as the evening's featured entertainment. I\4r.

IN MEMORIAM

Let us bow our heads in momentary tribute to two dear departed members of the staff of The California Lumber Merchant. It wasn't really their time to go -but when is it for anyone?

You see, it was this way. On October 20 Los Angeles Hoo-Hoo Club 2 held its monthly meeting at Palos Verdes Country Club, and the event was covered and photographed, per custom, by a member of CLM's staff. He got the story. He didn't get the pictures. Okay, so you gotta overlook one goof.

But, on November l7-again a meet of Los Angeles Hoo-Hoo at Knollwood-another CLM staff member was dispatched to cover the event. He got the story-and he didn't get the pictures.

So what would you do? Yeah, that's what we did-took both of them out to the wall, offered them Hoo-Hoo blindfolds (which they nobly refused) and shot them.

Unfortunately, our pistol aim was about as good as theirs with the camera. So, you'll be seeing them around again, getting their stories, aiming with their cameras -and with a look of desperation in their eyes.-Editor.

Just about everyone got the "bird" at the Annual Turkey Shoot sponsored 9_y Pl!r, T td., at the Crystal Springs Golf Club in Burlingame An Nov-embir 17. Host for the day was George Mon- nier who, although he couldn'i attend, saw to it that the members had a wonderful day, beautiful weather and a fine olnner.

Tuesday, November 21, 1961 was a fine day for Stella Roach, publicity director for the l96l National Forest Products Week Los Angeles Committee, when chairman Wayne Mullin presented her with a brand new RCA TV set for her wonderful work

during the past year. This was a gesture of appreciation for her promotion and publicity activity, which developed hundreds of stories throughout the southland local newspapers and displays in various public places in the many cities and communities.

Guy Barnett, prominent Southern California lumbermau and sales manager of Rossman Mill & Lumber Co., Long Beach, and Lu Warren were married in Las Vegas December 1, 1961. The charn'ring couple will make their home at Hollywood Riviera, Redondo Beach, California. An all wood {rame sports car has been designed and ,built by Dick W. Douglass, president of Cedars, Inc., Utah. The automobile, very similar in design to the 1959 Corvette, will be on display in different car dealers' showrooms cluring the week between Christmas and New Years. Douglass has named tl.re sports car after his bearrtiful and charming wife Loretta, who gave him the inspiration and courage to create this wood masterpiece.

Jo Cogburn, of Owens-Parks Lumber Co. and an active member of Hoo-Hoo-Ette Club No. 1, Los Angeles, jetted to West Virginia last month to spend Thanksgivingwith her family and many friends there.

The three day Annual Nleeting of the National Lumber Manufacturing Association ended with the election of Arthur Temple, Jr., president of the Southern Pine Lumber Co., Texas, as president of the Association.

Robert K. Winters has been named head of foreign forestry services for the U. S. Forest Service, succeeding Albert C. Cline, who retired last month after more than 22 years of Federal service. Since 1952 Mr. Cline has been in charge of all Forest Service foreign forestry activities. This includes recruitment and technical support of foresters for overseas assistance programs, training foreign nationals in this countr)', and participating in international organization affairs dealing with forestry and forest resources.

Don Bufkin, Hobbs-Wall sales representative for the southern area, and wife Helen on a combined business and pleasure trip to Tucson, Ariz,ona, and way points. During the Thanksgiving holiday he visited with son, Herb, and his wife, Marlene, granddaughter Christine and daughter Donna, w'ho is a student at the University of Arizona. On the return trip he visited with various retail dealers in both Arizona and California.

He had lunch with Sheriff Pitchess. His bistro is a popular spot with southlan<l lumber executives where Ken Conway, Horace Wolfe and others are seen. Thistle Inn is the spot Bill Stuart, Jr., and his lovely wife Dori, were entertained upon their return from a tour of duty in Hawaii.

Bob Mosby, sales executive Diamond National Lumber Co., Red Bluff, California, and his pretty wife sailed to Honolulu December 8th on a combined business and pleasure trip. They are expected back on the mainland before January l,1962.

Tony Courchaine, superintendent Jamb Dandy Lumber Co., Inc., Whittier, and his pretty wife Nora, seen doing the "Twist" at Le Crazy Horse on the Sunset Strip in Hollywood. They had such a good time Tony was a.w.o.l. from the remanufactuting plant for a couple of days, it was said.

Wallace Tanner, general manager of Carroll Moulding, Torrance, California, and his wife, Elsie Knight Tanner, recently celebrated their golden wedcling anniversary at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco. Our congtatulations to the Tanners, and best wishes for many nrore years of happiness.

Included in the evening entertainment was a complete vaudeville show direct from the strip at Las Vegas and a 4:00 A.M. steak breakfast prior' to departure for Intemational Airport and honre. The two prominent Southern California lumbernren report golf attendance at the big Arizona event was 68, and more than 150 lumbernren an<1 their friends, were on hand for the banquet and entertainment.

In the old logging camp days one of the favorite stories was that of the French cook who was just opening a big bag of Navy beans. "What do you do with all those beans?" asked a visitor. "lluh !" snorted the cook, surprised at such ignorance. "Dem little white beans mak fine pea soup ! Anybody don't lak dem . it's a dam lie."

And then came the much told story of the butcher who wanted to sell some lean pork to the restaurant keeper. "I'll guarantee you," he said earnestly, "that this pork will make as fine chicken salad as any veal you ever used."

And now comes the Irishman who saw a heap of cranberries in the store, and asked the storekeeper what they were. "Thim is cranberries," said the Irish storekeeper. "Are they fit to eat?" asked Pat. Chorlie Schmir Joins Silmorco

Well-known import-export executive, Charlie Schmitt, joined Silmarco, Inc., of San Francisco, as an active partner on October 31. The announcement was made by Gunter Silmar rvho has been heading the firm since it succeeded Scarburgh California Company last June 1.

Long active in the field of imported lumber and plywood, Charlie is a past president of the Imported Hardr,voocl Plvwood Association and the Satr Franciico Lumbermens Club.

Schmitt has spent most of his working career in plywood, the last 8 years of which he has been active in the importation of plywood and hardwood lumber. Originally with U.S. Plywood Corpor-ation for many years, Charlie entered the imported plywood lumber field with The Beton Company in San Francisco during 1953. More recently,

he had been directing the imPorted lumber and plywood division of Atkins, Kroll & Company in San Francisco. NLMA Spurs $1,838,000 Campaign To Increase Wood Consumpfion

During the Annual Meeting of the National Lumber Manufacturers Association, the National Wood Promotion Committee of NLMA approved a $1,838,000 budget for next year, in order to carry on its campaign for increasing the tuse of wood by American consumers.

The Board of Directors adopted a number of resolutions, "included moves to increase industry efforts to reduce the number of lumber grades and to standardize grade names, a'.rd to undertake the development of improved exterior fi^rish performance on wood through research. Another resolution was to urge the U.S. Department of Commerce to explain to foreign buyers or prospective buyers that this nation is actually growing more timber than it is using 'and there is no American timber famine or lumber shortage n'hich would impair our ability to supply lumber and wood p'.-oducts to other countries.

Other resolutions adopted were to create a special committee to consider pertinent matters relating to working stresses and design standards for lumber, and to authorize the issuance of a 1962 edition of the National Design Speci{ication after review of proposed changes is completed by the Technical Advisory Committee in Tanuary.

The NLMA policy on wilderness legislation was revised to state affirmatively and clearly that the lumber industry recognizes and is not opposed tb wilderness use of federal lands, but at the same time urging that a Wilderness System should not be established by law without full Congrcssional review.

In an effort to alert the nation to the dangers present in the Administration-sponsored Water Resources Planning Act, the NLMA staff was directed to warn the forest industries, the federated associations and the Association of State Foresters of the "danger that federal control over forest manag'ement on state and private lands may be attempted in the guise of water control legislation."

The Board of Directors then authorized the NLMA President Arthur Temple, Jr. "to appoint an Executive Council on Federal Timber Supply to develop and recommend to the President plans and coordinated actions designed to resolve federal timber sales problems."

In regard to the Administration's proposed "modernization" of the public land disposal laws the lumber industry stated that "any revision in the Nation's public land disposal laws should include provision for studies of : 1) Public domain lands to determine which are qualified for private or,r'nership; 2) Exchanges to block up both private and public holdings; and 3) Disposition of lands to the States for parks, state forests, and other state purposes."

A highlight of the meeting was the dedication, on Monday, of the association's new Washington headquarters, the Forest Industries Building. The eight-story edifice contains more than 100,00 board feet of lumber in the paneling, floors and ceilings. Nineteen species of wood, from all the major forest areas of the United States. have been used in the building.

The wife of Dick Brecheisen, Cactus Lumber & Supply, Phoenix, was seri6irsly injured in an auto accident during mid-November, but is reported well on the road to recovery now.

Tom Mulholland has replaced Dolph Treat at White Mountain Lumber Company, McNarry, Arizona. Dolph recently retired to run a private water company locally.

Robert D. Kohn, formerly located at the Mt. Shasta plant of Ralph L. Smith Lumber Co., was recently transferred to the company's Anderson plant.

Ike Zafrani, president of Harbor Lum'ber Company, San Francisco, has just ernbarked on a 'round the world trip which'll take him to Hawaii, Japan, Manila, Hong Kong, New Delhi, Lebannon, Aleppo (Syria, Ike's birthplace) and on through Europe. Ike claims the trip has been in the planning stage some 30 years, especially the pilgrimage to Syria where he sez he might scout around for a harem or an oil well or two if he has the time.

Mack Giles, Marinland Lumber, made a little deer hunting safari into the wilds of Nevada last month and last we heard Mack had an Elko casino prize lor the season's largest buck on ice.

Jerry Mashek recently announced the addition of Jim Adams as salesmanager of Hill & Morton's Fresno distribution yard. Jim at one time owned and operated Fowler Lumber Company and more recently had been active in t'he wholesale business in the Fresno area. Elvert Gantt continues on as yard manager and Andy Wills, formerly with Kellner Lumber Company, has signed on as Hill & Morton's office clerk.

E. L. Bruce Company's Ralph Norback attended the National Association of Home Builders Convention in Chicago during the first of December.

Tohn Stewart, for more than 33 years identifi-ed as superintendent for Frost Hardwood Lumber Co.. San Diego, California, died November 19, 1961, following a short illness.

'Ihroughout his lifetime he was a prominent leader in the lumber industry and is a Dast Dresident of the San Diego Concatenated-Order of Hoo-Hoo. He was active in civic and social afiairs in his community right to the end and his many friends will miss him.

George Arthur Fischer, founder oJ North Side Lumber Company, died at his home at 1406 East Floradora.Avenue, Fresno, California on November 13.

A native of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, Mr' Fischer was in the lumber business in Great Falls, Montana, until moving to California in 1939. He had lived in Fresno since 1939' when. with two of his sons, Joe H' and George R., he established the North Side firm; he was president of the company until his retirement a Year ago.

Discusses Christmas Plans

Many festive holiday plans werg conceived during the Hoo-Hoo No. 2 Steering Committee Meeting in Rodger Young Auditorium on November 20. The big item on the evening's agenda was the annual Christmas Party to be held December 15th at the California Country Club.

President Joe Petrash announced that the last phase of the 54-hole golf tourney would precede the Christmas festivities and that Don Gow would distribute the tourney prizes after the Christmas dinner. It was also stated that the entertainment for this big event will be arranged and coordinated by Lee Kramer and Larry Weiland. te Kramer told the Ste;ring Committee members that the entertainment would consist of an exciting girlie show and some vaudeville acts. Joe Petrash then thanked Lee Kramer for the great iob accomplished on the second mailing io. the -Knollwood Country Club meeting.

Kenny Kenofel again volunteered, military style, to be the official greeter at the Christmas party. Ele was commended by fellow steerers for the exceptional job he did as official greeter at Knollwood.

The Arherican Hardware Corporation has reported a four per cent increase in sales and a 19 per cent increase in consolidated net income for the nine months ended September 30, 1961.

Consolidated net income for The American Hardware Conporation and its wholly-owned subsidiaries was $1,755,00O, equal to $1.68 per shate, compared with $1,473,000 of $1.41 per share during the same period in 196O according to David Muirhead, president.

Sales for the first nine months of this year were $34,310,000, compared with sales of $32,922,000 in the first nine months of 1960.

Increased net income was attributed to higher sales and a greater volume of production resulting from the sustained improved rate of incoming orders. Net income from the company's investments have also incr.eased, Muirhead said.

Incoming orders for the first nine months of this year were seven per cent higher than for the same period a year ago. The unfilled backlog of orders on September 30, 196l iwas 72 per cent higher than at the same date. last year.

Although there is some evidence of intensified 'price competition incoming orders remain fuvorable for most of the company's major product lines, Muirhead said. This combined with the high level of building construction, indicates that satisfactory' results from operations may be anticipated for the last quarter of the year.

Swede macle an excellent talk on the occasion of First Annual Ii'orest Proclucts Week, and I plan to present an annual pro- giam in order to keep forest products before our Rotary Club.

Our speaker on October 13 of this year was Dr. John Zivnuska, Professor of Forestry and acting director of the School of Forestry, Llniversity of California. He spoke on "Money Grows on I rees: Califoruia's Forest Proclucts Industry." He told me that he had worked on the famed Forest Products study done by the Stanford Research Institute for Weyerhaeuser a few years ago, ancl that he harl been on special assignments as a visiting lecturer in Norway and had rlone a study for the United Nations in Thailand. Professor Zivnuska brought out a number of the facts ancl figures so well described by I,Ir. Antoville at his I..A. Rotary address.

I didn't ballyhoo this year's meeting quite so much as 1960, at which time I plastereil our meeling room with poslers, elc., and also had Rrubaker of CRA as nry seconcl guest. This year I had Vic Roth and Tony Tay- lor ancl Pete Hohn of Errreka Mill at the head table. Next vear.
