You can’t afford to miss the 2014 Traders Market E

ARLIER THIS SUMMER, we interviewed a cross-section of NAWLA members to learn what they value most about their trade association, and how to enhance the programs and services we provide. Repeatedly, the annual Traders Market was cited as “the hub of our industry,” “the best lumber show we attend,” a place where business is done, lifelong friendships are made, and attendees get updated on what’s happening in the industry and the association.

If you’ve never attended a Traders Market, I encourage you to join us Nov. 12-14 at the newly renovated Hyatt Regency Hotel in Chicago. And, if you’re a “veteran,” I look forward to welcoming you once again to NAWLA’s premier networking event. What makes the Traders Market the best trade show value in the forest products industry? It’s a convenient and cost-effective way to see customers, meet prospects, and connect with old and new friends—all under one roof. You’ll have access to 250 industry-leading manufacturers and distributors of lumber and related building materials who can make a difference in your business. To view registrations, visit www.nawlatradersmarket.org. You can gain countless ideas, tools and best practices to grow revenue and maximize your bottom line. For 2014, we have retained the proven, two-day show floor format that our members have enjoyed for 17 years—“sellers in the booths and buyers in the aisles.” Additional opportunities to build relationships beyond the tradeshow floor are during receptions, meals and after-hours socializing. We’ve also added new educational opportunities to this year’s agenda via “Learning Lounges” on the tradeshow floor. Within those areas, you’ll gain insights into hiring and retaining the next generation in your company, and gain a greater understanding of the effects of water on wood products. We’ve incorporated a few other new ideas into the trade show floor format that I feel sure will enhance your overall experience. So, be sure to visit www.nawlatradersmarket.org to register now and make plans to join 1,500 fellow attendees for the one show you simply can’t afford to miss this year—the NAWLA Traders Market. I look forward to seeing you this November in Chicago! Jim McGinnis, The McGinnis Lumber Co. 2014 NAWLA Traders Market Committee Chairman

Chicago Bound

N

Show returns to refurbished home

AWLA T RADERS M ARKET is back once again in Chicago, in its most streamlined format to date. The focus is squarely on maximizing time for networking, while cutting back on peripheral presentations. The show itself, Nov. 13-14 at the recently remodeled Hyatt Regency Chicago, has had its hours tweaked, so that each day its last hour will overlap the traditional end-ofthe-day networking reception, which will now be based on the show floor. The presentation of awards for 10-year continuous exhibitors will now be folded into the grand opening luncheon, instead of reserved for a separate, invitation-only presentation. It will be combined with the presentation of awards for members marking their 25th, 50th, 75th, and 100th year with NAWLA; a welcome by Traders Market committee chairman Jim McGinnis, McGinnis Lumber Co., Meridian, Ms.; and a keynote presentation by inspirational speaker Scott Burrows. Burrows is living proof your life can change in an instant. By the age of 19, he was an acclaimed wide receiver at Florida State University and a top-ranked kick-boxing champion. But in 1984, he was involved in a serious automobile accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. Despite being diagnosed a quadriplegic, he decided to focus on the positives of the experience instead of dwelling on the negatives. He resolved to thrive in life by using three principles: vision (to see complete success in his mind’s eye first), mindset (to let go of the past and focus 100% on what he could control), and grit (to take action and persevere until he succeeded). Traders Market attendees will be encouraged to stand up to their challenges—regardless of circumstances—using his three dynamic principles. Also on the agenda are a GenNext educational session and invitation-only 10 Group meetings. The familiar location, Chicago’s Hyatt Regency, recently completed an extensive upgrade, with improvements to the Big Bar, lobby area, and other amenities.

Why SilvaStar? How valuable is consistent quality? At SilvaStar, we think it’s the most important question.

For most of us, value is expressed as the combination of price, quality, and service. We believe that while price gets you in the door, quality and service keep you on the job.

Price vs. Quality We believe that our customer’s customer won’t lose a job on of the price of a fascia and trim package, but that same customer may not let you bid their next job if the quality of that trim package was subpar.

What makes us different? • We purchase only the highest quality wane-free J-Grade and Square edge Kiln Dried SPF available. • Our plant has been Six Sigma certified and all quality control oversight is performed in house. • All of our manufacturing is done at the same location. • We have a six-car rail siding and will load Trucks, Vans, and Containers. • We have an onsite state-of-the-art saw and fabrication shop. • Prior to manufacturing, we sort and redry all wet lumber in our Nyle low temperature dry kilns. • Then we pre pull ALL defects ahead of the saws for our premium fascia, decking, pattern and siding products. • What doesn’t make the grade is processed into other products, or repackaged and sold as a 2/Btr. Home Center grade.

Consistent quality at competitive pricing Our manufacturing and logistical advantages add up to consistent quality at the right price. That’s our bottom line.

Why SilvaStar? What you see is what you get. The trim package is the finishing touch. It gets noticed and it sends a message. What message do you want to send? Consistent quality at a fair price that you and your customers can count on… every time

A crash course in tradeshow networking By Russell Trahan

I

NDUSTRY-SPECIFIC CONFERENCES, such as the NAWLA Traders Market, are a hallmark in business networking. As an attendee or a sponsored vendor, you will be inundated with a who’s who in your field—from the headlining heavyweights delivering keynotes and breakout sessions to the newcomers looking to create a name and garner beneficial connections—the chaos of the convention floor can prove a sensory overload for the experienced and firsttimers alike. For that reason, before you pack your bags, you need a crash course in Event Networking 101 to maximize your potential for expanded company visibility and name recognition. It is one thing to work a room at a local industry function, but it’s another animal entirely when working the convention or conference floor, surrounded by hundreds— if not thousands—of likeminded individuals. There are numerous avenues to consider when preparing to attend, but there are a few staples to put into action to certify that your experience is a valuable one and you come home with encouraging leads, a lengthened client list or an increased customer base.

takes away some of the irritations of travel, but if you’re heading to the airport in shorts and a T-shirt with a head full of bubbly, you’re already starting your convention experience incorrectly. The movie cliché involving a manic driver late to a meeting, weaving in and out of traffic, directing choice gestures at other drivers, just to arrive on time and realize the guy he cut off is the same guy he’s delivering a sales presentation to is exaggerated, but true. When you’re making your way through the airport, the convention is already under way. Every interaction should be treated as potential business, and this means dressing and acting as you would on the convention floor, and ensuring your conduct and attire remain professional—because you don’t know who is who. Meetings have been scheduled in the airport Starbucks line, so while the inclination may be to travel in a relaxed fashion in comfortable attire, most working professionals will tell you they would trade a few unpleasant hours for a newly minted contract.

The Convention Begins Before Takeoff

For many companies, a large portion of their annual budget—as well as their time—is dedicated to their annual conference or convention. While investing in a sponsorship that involves a booth set-up in the exhibit area can prove costly, it can also prove lucrative when the convention floor closes. A booth gives your company a physical presence throughout the convention, and exponentially increases your visibility. As opposed to conversations and business

No one likes plane flights. There are few things more uncomfortable than a cramped cabin, yearning for an extra inch of legroom, breathing recycled air for an inordinate amount of time. With imminent discomfort on the horizon for a span of several hours, there is a tendency to doubledown on the comfort one can control, which usually involves dress and demeanor. There’s no doubt that a loose-fitting outfit and an early-morning mimosa (or two)

card exchanges, you have an area replete with banners, boards detailing your products or services, and, of course, your carefully chosen convention representatives. Curiosity will often bring attendees to your booth to see what you’re all about, and, as such, you should guarantee that it is managed by your most customer service savvy staff. Arrive early each day to make sure everything is in working order by the time the convention opens. Create a schedule with time-blocks that correspond with the daily convention activities so you can plan one-on-one meetings with any potential clients away from the hustle and bustle of the booth.

Augment Your Experience: Deliver a Workshop

A superb way to create some buzz around the convention is to deliver a presentation or workshop. One great aspect of these events is that there is constantly something going on, from quick informational sessions to multi-hour seminars—and often organizers are looking for individuals to fill out their extensive schedules. If this opportunity is available, it should be considered a must. Attendees can read about your expertise or services, but there is no better way to get your ideas to stick than delivering a presentation. These workshops should be formatted as content-driven and informational—not as an inperson advertorial. Pique your audience’s interest by offering a solution to their problems or an approach to make their lives easier, and your skills will prove impactful—and potentially profitable. Use your platform as an in-person sales pitch and your efforts will go unnoticed.

The Convention Is Over, But Networking Has Just Begun

You return home exhausted from multiple days of nonstop presentations, long-hours working the booth in the exhibit area, and networking with your colleagues in the industry—but your work has only just begun. It seems like a simple concept—follow-up—but it’s astounding how many professionals believe their face-toface efforts will be enough to immediately lead to a windfall of new business. Your mindset upon returning home should be one of “they met me, and they met my competition.” Separate yourself from the pack. Email your new contacts and convey how much you appreciated their time during such a busy event, and offer dates and times to continue your conversation. Twiddling your thumbs and waiting for the phone to ring often results in a net-zero gain— proactivity is the key to new clientele. Regardless of your industry, or your status within it, your calendar should be highlighted with the dates that you’re attending the annual conference or convention. The potential to recruit new clients and customers or craft longstanding relationships is boundless, and will boost your standing as a company or individual. Networking is a cornerstone of business, and a convention or conference is the premier medium to make the most of your efforts. – Russell Trahan is president of PR/PR, a boutique public relations agency specializing in positioning clients in front of their target audience in print and online. The impenetrable account By Dave Kahle

H

OW DO I SELL to an account that is firmly in the hands of a competitor? In one form or another, I hear that question at almost every sales seminar I teach. It’s a great question, reflecting one of the most perplexing and frustrating situations every salesperson faces. If you haven’t yet been faced with this problem, be patient, you will soon be. Here’s how this usually develops: You’ve called on a high-potential account a number of times, but can’t seem to get anywhere. The more time you spend in the account, the more apparent it is that one or more of your competitors are deeply ingrained as suppliers to that account. You may even have had someone say to you, “We do all our business with XYZ competitor.” And that leaves you on the outside looking in. If the account has some real potential, you want to be seriously considered as a supplier. But it looks like this account is not really interested in you—not because of you or your company, but because of a previously established strong relationship with a competitor. So, how do you manage this account? What should you do? Let’s start with what not to do. Don’t vent your frustration by speaking poorly about the competition. And don’t attack the competitor’s products, company, practices or salespeople. Someone who works for this customer—or more likely, several people who work there—chose to do business with that competitor. They have chosen to buy the competitor’s products, have developed a close working relationship, and may be good friends outside of work. When you speak badly about the competi-

tion, you insult all those decisions made by the customer to work with that particular competitor. Trying to penetrate an account by insulting your customer’s judgement is not a particularly effective technique. Realize, also, that you have only a tiny glimpse of what your competitor is really like. You may have found some evidence in another account of their ineptness, or what you perceive as unethical behavior. And on the basis of this tiny experience, you’re ready to launch a holy crusade to reveal their deep flaws and expose the risks of doing business with them. That is almost never the truth. Almost always, your competitor is a company with the products, ethics, business systems, people and goals that are very similar to yours. Very few companies survive in this highly competitive marketplace if they have shoddy products, lax business morals, incompetent people, and poor operating systems. When you criticize these things in your competitor, you show yourself to be ignorant and inexperienced. But what should you do? Here are two proven techniques to penetrate these kinds of accounts.

1. Go around the competition, not through them.

This customer is probably not buying everything from your primary competitor. There likely is a handful of other suppliers selling items that you could supply. Focus on those. Find items that are being purchased from someone other than the main vendor, and present your company’s options on those. Often these could be small quantities of relatively inconspicuous items that don’t appear on the radar screen of your competitor. When you put together attractive programs and proposals for those kinds of items, you don’t threaten your customer’s relationship with your competitor, and you begin to show them the value of a relationship with you. Be careful to keep a relatively low profile in the account. You don’t want to draw your competitor’s attention. At first, as you try to pick off some of these miscellaneous items, you are very vulnerable to your primary competitor finding and squashing you. As time goes by and you’re successful at becoming the supplier of a number of miscellaneous items, you’ll gain power and position within the account, and, in so doing, build some defenses against the ire of your competitor. You’re always safer if your comBuilding-Products.com

petitor underestimates your activity and success within an account. So, at least until you’re well established, be as discreet and inconspicuous as possible. Here’s a number of ways to implement this strategy of “going around the competition”:

A. Find some area within the customer’s business where the competition is very weak. For example, when I was selling hospital supplies, I discovered that one of my major competitors was very strong in the operating room. The competitor had a wide range of products, well-respected lines, a history of being active and interested in that area of the hospital, and significant expertise in operating room procedures and problems. So, I didn’t bother with the operating room, and spent my time in respiratory therapy and ICU. The competition never bothered to visit those departments. I went around my competition by finding a department on which to focus where the competition was weak. B. Find someone who doesn’t like dealing with your competitor. This may take longer. In a large organization, there are often dozens of decision-makers and influencers. It’s likely that one or more of them may not like dealing with your competitor. Maybe personalities clashed some time in the past, or someone felt slighted or treated rudely. Regardless, someone inside that organization may not be your competitor’s biggest fan. Find that person(s). But don’t be too quick to bet your future on that relationship. Before you begin to work with that person, assess that person’s political power within the account. It may be that the champion you selected is viewed as a perpetual complainer who never has any constructive opinions to offer. If that’s the case, you’ll hurt yourself in the account by aligning with him/her. If you come to the conclusion that your champion is a strong and respected player within the account, focus on building a relationship and equipping that person to pursue his or her own agenda with your assistance. 2. Make a persistent, strong appeal to be the secondary supplier for that account. Here’s one important thing you know about this customer: They are loyal to their key supplier. That indicates a philosophical position this customer holds—these are people who believe in loyalty to suppliers who do a good job in their account. That’s why they continue to buy from your competitor. So, use that position to your own advantage. Make a consistent appeal to the customer that they ought to have the same kind of relationship with a back-up supplier— you. You’re not implying criticism of the primary supplier, but things that are out of their control can happen, and the continuity of supplies can be interrupted. In that case, it’s to the customer’s advantage to have a good relationship with a secondary supplier. That’s an argument that often resonates effectively within this kind of account. If they agree with that position, then it follows that they need to be doing some business with you in order to keep you interested and active within the account. And that should lead to a discussion of what you can be selling to them. Both of these strategies require you to be persistent in visiting the account and staying visible to them, even in the face of little success or encouragement from them. 16

• Traders’ Preview • October 2014

Assuming that the potential of the account is worth the investment, this persistency may be your key strategy. I was faced with this exact situation on more than one occasion. As I was venting my frustration over a particularly difficult account, my manager counseled me like this: “The only thing you can count on,” he said, “is that things will change. We don’t know how, and we don’t know when, but we do know that things will change. Your job is to stay in front of the customer and position yourself to be the customer’s easiest, lowest risk choice when things finally do change with the competition.” What great advice that turned out to be. The best example was a medium-sized account not far from my home. On my first call there, I met with the head of purchasing. After listening politely to my presentation, he said, “Young man, we already have too many vendors. We don’t want to add new ones; we want to eliminate some we already have. Secondly, we don’t know much about your company, but what we do know we don’t like. So, I’d advise you not to waste your time here.” I considered that a real challenge. So, about six weeks later, I returned with my strongest product. This was a product called suction tubing, which is a staple item in a hospital. Every hospital uses it in all sorts of ways and places throughout its operations. We had an exclusive with the country’s largest and best manufacturer of suction tubing, coupled with excellent pricing. He couldn’t say no to my deal on suction tubing. Again, he listened patiently to my presentation. When I had finished, he said, “We don’t use any.” I looked through the open door of his office, and saw a supply cart in the hall outside, with suction tubing hanging from it. He was lying to me. I knew it, and he knew that I knew it. “This really is going to be a challenge,” I thought to myself. As I reflected on the account, it became apparent that he was protecting a relationship with my arch competitor. I decided on two lines of attack: Find someone to sell to who wasn’t enamored with the competitor, and hang in there as an easy choice if, and when, the competitor stumbled. That’s exactly what happened. I found one of the purchasing agents who was interested in what my company had to offer. When the competitor was backordered on an item, the customer turned to us. We were able to deliver. That eventually led to our obtaining the contract for that item. And that opened the door, gave me a foothold in the account, and allowed me an opportunity to begin working within it. Three years later, that account had become one of my best. I had penetrated it to a greater degree than any other. And, the head of purchasing who had previously so ardently protected the relationship with my competitor, now just as ardently protected the relationship with me. That is what makes it all worthwhile. Almost always, those accounts that protect a relationship with your competitor will just as fervently protect the relationship with you when you become their primary supplier. The payoff is well worth the investment. – Dave Kahle is a leading sales educator, speaker and author of nine books, including How to Sell Anything to Anyone Anytime. Reach him at dave@davekahle.com. Meet the Exhibitor Benjamin Obdyke Benjamin Obdyke, manufacturer of roof and wall products, will showcase its complete roof and wall solutions at the 2014 NAWLA Traders Market. With this year’s addition of FlatWrap HP Housewrap, Benjamin Obdyke offers a complete wall system solution across multiple applications. For basic moisture protection, Benjamin Obdyke recommends FlatWrap HP, a premium tri-laminate housewrap. It provides optimal strength while protecting the water resistant film layer and has enhanced UV and tear resistance. It can also be paired with HydroGap Drainable housewrap as the required secondary layer in stone/stucco applications. For a small premium (about 8¢ to 10¢ per sq. ft. more than standard housewrap), HydroGap Drainable Housewrap combines a premium wrap with optimum drainage performance. HydroGap effectively eliminates excess moisture, thereby preventing the damaging effects of mold and rot. Its 1mm spacers allow at least 100 times more bulk water to drain from a wall versus standard housewraps and drains two times faster than other drainable housewraps. It can be installed in any direction and performs optimally under fiber cement, wood, vinyl, three-coat stucco, stone veneer/manufactured stone, and metal sidings. Finally, for maximum moisture protection, the Home Slicker Rainscreen product line offers the best of both worlds, drainage and ventilation. Home Slicker provides a 1/4” space between siding and sheathing, allowing drainage and air movement for maximum drying potential. It is best practice to incorporate a rainscreen into a wall system, particularly in coastal areas and when installing siding that absorbs moisture (wood, fiber cement, stone and stucco). Three options are available: Home Slicker, Home Slicker Plus Typar, and Home Slicker Stone & Stucco.

36

HydroFlash comes in 4”, 6”, 9”, 12” and newly offered 2.5” ideal for taping housewrap seams and penetrations. HydroCorner Sill Solution is an inexpensive option for protecting a window sill from moisture intrusion. Place one HydroCorner in each sill corner, and then cover with a piece of self-adhered flashing (HydroFlash) for a quick and easy-to-install sill treatment. HydroTape is a handtearable tape that is specially formulated to provide an enhanced bond when taping seams of HydroGap or FlatWrap HP. It also effectively repairs rips, tears and penetrations. Use of these accessories can extend the basic product warranty to a 15-year product & labor warranty, that covers up to $20,000 per dwelling should the system fail to meet performance characteristics. A well-built wall system is crucial to maintaining the integrity of a home. Benjamin Obdyke believes in providing products and solutions to help the industry “Build Better” so homes are protected for years to come.

Meet the Exhibitor CT Darnell Construction/Sunbelt Rack Years ago, when Buddy Klumb of Klumb Lumber met Clint Darnell of C.T. Darnell Construction at a NAWLA conference in Dallas, it was the beginning of a fruitful relationship that would span four projects in four states. Most recently, Klumb needed to maximize existing storage space at its Covington, Ga., location. According to Covington facility manager Karen Stephens, “We had a new 30,000-sq. ft. building that we needed to make workable. Clint and the C.T. Darnell team quickly put together a design utilizing their Sunbelt Rack products that was efficient and logical.”

The Problem

Klumb’s Covington location focuses on specialty products: high-end, low-volume SKUs that require safe and efficient storage. The small quantities typically required in these orders necessitate breaking pallets, which in turn creates a storage and inventory challenge.

The Solution

By incorporating cantilever racks throughout the interior, Clint was able to leverage the space for maximum use. The vertical orientation of the design allows multiple product types and sizes to be visible and accessible for quick picks and turns. Additionally, the design team incorporated

a unique stack rack system on the exterior of the building to accommodate PVC trim. According to Clint, “This unique movable and stackable rack system allows for easier picking of their inventory of PVC trim and molding, and it stores it in an extremely space efficient footprint.” “We couldn’t be happier,” said Stephens. “They obviously know their way around racks and always have, but it’s their clear and refreshing understanding of the unique nature of our business—LBM—that really sets them apart.”

In 2002, it opened an office in Atlanta, Ga., to solidify its presence and provide localized service that continues to create solid business growth year after year. The line’s success has been extraordinary, and CMPC continues to innovate utilizing that “quality first” strategy.

Recently it developed Selex Plywood, pine plywood panels manufactured with a superior appearance and suitable for all types of uses. Its exceptionally smooth surface and solid core construction separates it from the competition and has customers asking for it by name. One client was a Northwest yacht manufacturer that was having problems with toxic air emissions due to solvent-based varnishes and stains to finish wood surfaces in its yachts. Additionally, the toxic fumes were causing health problems for its employees. Although the painters were reluctant to switch to a new technology and devote the time required to learn new application techniques, the need for a low-VOC product outweighed their concern. Eco developed a virtually noodor varnish that was safe for the employees to use, cleaned up easily with soap and water, and could be safely discharged to the municipal sewer system. Eco Chemical believes that all its products should be an equal blend of passion for innovation and a commitment to ethical practices, including care for the environment and the health and safety of its customers. To Eco Chemical, this is essential to fulfilling its role as a reliable provider of quality products and trusted professional services. The company has made it its mission to manufacture

stains and coatings that are high quality, environmentally sound, and at a fair price. All of Eco Chemical’s stains meet or exceed federal and state air and water regulations while providing exceptional color and durability. These stains are ideal for all wood products that can be improved with staining: pressure treated lumber, fencing, posts, decks, railings, siding and exterior furniture. Eco Chemical works with each customer to build the coating that best suits their market and manufacturing processes. All products are water-based, low-VOC, concentrated formulas built with the best available pigments and resins. Eco Chemical offers top grade products and optimal packaging choices with a low environmental cost.

Meet the Exhibitor Klausner Group After years of planning, engineering, fundraising and construction, not to mention a major financial crisis to make things interesting, Klausner’s first U.S. sawmill will begin operations in the late fall of 2014. Located in Live Oak, Fl., halfway between Tallahassee and Jacksonville near I10, the mill is surrounded by some of the largest forest holdings of major timberland owners. Klausner also wanted a location that gave it easy access to the U.S. port systems. Its customers around the world are looking forward to receiving southern pine, well dried, and in the metric sizes and lengths that they are accustomed to from European producers. The company has invested heavily in low temperature indirect heat kilns that will produce a significantly better product. Drying southern pine in 19 hours has a detrimental effect on the wood. Klausner will dry its southern pine for three days. That makes the

Meet the Exhibitor Idaho Forest Group Idaho Forest Group has invested in building a new HewSaw production line at the company’s plant in Lewiston, Id. The new state-of-theart mill, which should reach full production capacity in the 4th quarter 2014, is the first of its kind to be operating in North America. “This new technology from Finland will increase production capacity for our Lewiston mill by almost 100% and is a major game

NEW HewSaw installed by Idaho Forest Group allows for bigger logs with a 100˚ axis of motion, compared to only a 15˚ axis of motion on a traditional HewSaw, which makes it more like a CNC machine for wood.

species easier to nail and rip and reduces checking and movement in the wood. It also opens up all kinds of new applications for southern pine. In the past, only specialty mills serving the window and door industry have employed this method. Complementing Klausner’s special drying and the company’s precision sawmilling approach will be mold protection as a standard feature. That’s why the company will market the products as Southern Klausner Pine.

Klausner is the operator of the worlds’ largest sawmill by output in Germany and is bringing the technology behind it to the United States. This marks a major step in the development of the solid wood industry in North America. Klausner looks forward to serving old and new friends with this new product. “Maybe as a team,” Klausner says, “we can convince contractors to use this homegrown pine instead of lumber that has to cross the continent or oceans to get here.”

changer for sawmilling in North America,” said Erol Deren, v.p. of sales and marketing. The HewSaw SL250 3.4 can handle logs from 4” to 18” diameter, and will give the plant the ability to cut 8,000 logs per shift—an increase from 20 logs per minute to 38 logs per minute. “Our new HewSaw allows for bigger logs with a 100˚ axis of motion, compared to only a 15˚ axis of motion on a traditional hewsaw,” said Jesse Short, Lewiston plant manager. “This is basically a CNC machine for wood.” Installing and using this machinery on North American soil for the first time presented many challenges, Short said. Twenty employees traveled to Europe for hands-on training by HewSaw’s technical team. It takes just two employees per shift to operate the entire production facility, from log debarking to the trim line. To complement the HewSaw installation, Idaho Forest Group will be installing a new high-tech log merchandising and sorting system, which will allow for batch process-

ing and double the number of logs per minute that can be processed. Deren said, “The new HewSaw and the ongoing improvements at the Lewiston sawmill will allow us to deliver higher quality lumber with faster production, as well as offer increased production options.” In late 2011, the company acquired the Lewiston facility from Clearwater Paper Corp. That purchase gave the company another strategic piece of a region renowned for its quality of timber. Idaho Forest Group is now the largest lumber producer in the Intermountain West and the 11th largest lumber producer in North America, with capacity for well over 1 billion bd. ft. per year. The company owns five production facilities throughout northern and central Idaho’s vast forests. “We continue to grow in capacity and to strengthen our focus on the business fundamentals,” said Marc Brinkmeyer, chairman and co-owner of Idaho Forest Group. “Our neverending goal is getting quality products out of the Intermountain West and into our customers’ hands.”

Meet the Exhibitor Roseburg For over 75 years, Roseburg Forest Products, based in Southwestern Oregon, has been a privately held manufacturer of wood-based products. Its four major product groups are plywood (both softwood and hardwood), lumber, engineered wood products, and composite panels. Roseburg is a vertically integrated company. To support its operations, Roseburg owns and manages over 600,000 acres of timberlands in Southern Oregon and Northern California. The timber base, combined with its broad manufacturing capabilities, positions Roseburg as a key player in the North American LBM industry. In the mid-1930s, founder Kenneth Ford acquired a small lumber mill with a handful of employees in southwest Oregon. Today, the firm is being led by Kenneth’s son, Allyn Ford, and employs over 3,000 associates in more than 80 communities throughout the U.S. From the beginning, its primary objective has been to be a conscientious steward of the environment while providing quality wood products to the market place. On the solid-wood side of the business, Roseburg’s manufacturing facilities include a large world-class shortlumber mill, three softwood plywood plants, a hardwood plywood facility, softwood veneer mill, and a state-of-theart engineered wood products facility, all in the western U.S. On the composite side, Roseburg operates four particleboard facilities and four laminating facilities in the western and southern U.S. As an integrated manufacturer of wood products, Roseburg has always had a major commitment to sustainability and the green movement. In the 1960s, Roseburg

was one of the first to produce particleboard from residual wood waste generated, while manufacturing lumber and plywood. Historically, this residual waste had either been incinerated or dumped into landfills. Today, residual byproducts that cannot be converted into other downstream end-use products (such as composite panels or paper) are used to fuel one of the company’s co-gen facilities. This long-standing commitment to sustainability, coupled with its wide range of manufacturing capabilities, allows Roseburg to offer the broadest portfolio of green products available from a single North American wood products manufacturer. The company also has a history of cooperatively working with government agencies and third-party certification organizations, demonstrating its commitment to high standards and public awareness. From silviculture practices defined by the Oregon Department of Natural Resources to product integrity specifications defined by APA or the Composite Panel Association, Roseburg strives to pursue continuous improvement and to exceed industry standards.

Its product line includes fascia, trim, decking, siding, pattern stock, and furring strips. Consistent Quality: SilvaStar is building its reputation on providing consistent quality throughout its product lines. We believe that while price gets you in the door, quality and service keep you on the job. “At SilvaStar, we believe that our customer’s customer won’t lose a job on the price of the fascia and trim package, but that same customer may not let you bid their next job if the quality of that trim package was subpar.” Logistical Advantage: Inbound raw material is delivered to its Bellingham plant by rail. All manufacturing, priming and staining is done at the same location. The plant is Six Sigma certified, and all quality control is oversight is performed in house. It has a state-of-the-art saw and fabrication shop. Prior to manufacturing, SilvaStar sorts and redries all inbound wet lumber in its

What doesn’t make the grade is processed into other products or repackaged and sold as a 2/Btr. Home Center Grade. Why SilvaStar? Jeff spends most of his time on the road promoting customer retention and development. “In my travels, the most asked question is, ‘Why SilvaStar?’ My answer is simple: what you see is what you get every time,” he shares. “The trim package is the finishing touch. It gets noticed and it sends a message. What message do you want to send?”

Meet the Exhibitor Weaber Lumber Established in 1941 by Walter H. Weaber, Weaber Lumber has grown from a small local mill into one of the nation’s leading hardwood manufacturers. Its state-ofthe-art facility is located in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains and uses advanced technology and strict standards to produce high quality hardwood products. Here, Weaber Lumber predominately processes red oak, white oak, and poplar timber from within a 130-mile radius of the mill. These logs are processed through an onsite sawmill, then dried in large capacity kilns. From there, the kiln dried lumber is administered through a secondary wood processing plant, where Weaber manufactures its finished products. Products include S4S boards, mouldings, unfinished flooring, and stair parts. Since quality control starts in the forest and continues throughout the whole mill, Weaber can ensure that all products are made in the U.S.A. It’s this quality that customers have come to rely on. Also, all products are SFI certified. As a certified participant of the Sustainable Forestry Initiative, Weaber believes that responsible environmental behavior and sound business decisions can co-exist. It also ensures that the forests are managed to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the future. Weaber continues to be an innovative leader, with the

addition of its revolutionary Finish Coat. This technologically advanced paint line is a fully automated process that uses a sophisticated, oven-cured coating developed by PPG. Once again, Weaber Lumber is ahead of the curve in meeting the demands of the marketplace by investing in our tomorrow.

Meet the Exhibitor The Westervelt Co. As the private owner of nearly 500,000 acres of timberlands in the southeastern U.S., The Westervelt Co.’s environmental stewardship practices were instilled by its founders when the organization first began acquiring land in the 1930s. These visionaries recognized the intrinsic value of forests as both a renewable wood fiber supply source and as a platform on which other businesses could be based. Recognizing FSC as one of the most stringent environmental certifications available, Westervelt successfully aligned its forestry practices with the standard in 2011, allowing its southern yellow pine wood products division, Westervelt Lumber, to bring a steady stream of FSC-certified fiber into its mill. Offered are FSC-certified lumber consisting of 1” boards, dimension lumber, timbers (4x4, 4x6, 6x6), decking and pattern stock. As a result, many customers have earned points in their pursuit of LEED-certified projects. Committed to preserving land for future generations, the company’s timber-management practices include streamside-management zones to improve water quality, immediate replanting to ensure a sustainable forest, continual forest management, and wildlife enhancement with onstaff biologists. Its manufacturing facilities maintain the highest emissions standards for air and water quality.

Respecting the forest, honoring the past, building the future. A nation’s pride you can build on.

The company honors its commitments by: • minimizing the greenhouse gas emissions from its business operations, • protecting and enhancing watershed quality on company owned, leased, or managed lands, and reducing its water usage where possible, • improving habitat quality wherever it operates, • managing its renewable resources in a sustainable and environmentally sound manner, • improving the efficiency of its energy consumption, • seeking ways to use renewable energy sources, and • working with government and regulatory agencies, customers, suppliers and associates to mutually improve the environment. With over 80 years experience as forest owners, forest managers, and forest products manufacturers, the vision of Westervelt’s early leaders has endured and now reaches into its fifth generation. One thing is certain: the company’s environmental stewardship mission will continue to serve as its basis for decision-making and will contribute to keep working forests working. Meet the Exhibitor Western Forest Products Western Forest Products is an integrated Canadian forest products producer that manages crown timberlands and manufactures softwood lumber and wood products on the British Columbia coast. It offers a premium species mix: western red cedar, hem-fir, Doug fir, yellow cedar, and Sitka spruce. With its unique timber base, WFP produces a wide range of lumber products, from commodity to specialty appearance, for the global marketplace. WFP is the largest forest tenure holder and lumber producer on the B.C. coast. It is well positioned to access growing Pacific Rim markets, as well as established North American and Japanese markets. With an annual capacity of 1.1 billion bd. ft., its eight sawmills and two remanufacturing plants are designed to capitalize on its unique, high quality timber supply to produce long lengths, large cross sections, and high-grade appearance lumber, in addition to commodity lumber. Western continues to make strategic capital investments in its operating platform to align with its strategy of increased production and product margins. During the second half of 2014, it will implement more than $22 million in its Cowichan Bay, Duke Point, and Saltair operations. The $2.5 million Cowichan Bay auto log rotation project was successfully installed and fully operational on July 28, 2014. The first phase of its Duke Point sawmill modernization plan was completed on July 29, 2014, and the $6.6million Phase II plan is underway to increase productivity and consolidate production. Western has also commenced work on a $2.3-million upgrade to its Duke Point barge loading facility, which will drive cost efficiencies with respect to accessing key markets. The $11-million Saltair sawmill log in-feed system will be operational by the end of 2014. This project will further enhance the successful first phase capital project, which was focused on the back end of the mill and included a new sorter, trimmer and edgers—all of which have increased mill productivity. Success is already being seen with the company’s investments. The recently installed Alberni Pacific sawmill autograder continues to exceed expectations and due to this, the evaluation of WFP’s other mills for similar autograder installations is underway. Western is proud to initiate leading technology in B.C.’s coastal wood manufacturing industry. It is continuing its commitment to coastal B.C. by investing back into its facilities—positioning it for continued success in the future.
