ONUKA: «I Try to Stay Away from Show Business Because to Me It’s Dirty » Can a wooden flute, bandura, or hammered dulcimer sound modern and fashionable? It turns out they can! This was proved by a new Ukrainian project named ONUKA. It’s not even a project but its own musical phenomenon. At least, that’s what music lovers call ONUKA. For a year and a half they have been elegantly combining electronic music with folk instruments. The debut album project was released in October 2014 and soon took the second spot in the ranking on ITunes. And in March 2015 ONUKA received a statuette in the category «Discovery of the Year» at the YUNA Ukrainian Music Awards. We talked to the leader of the group Nata Zhyzhchenko, who in conversation was no less interesting and upbeat than in her music. – Nata, at Ukraine’s main music awards YUNA for 2014 you became the «Discovery of the Year.» Did you expect to win this award? – I was hoping to get a YUNA, but until the last minute I didn’t believe it would happen. Since childhood I have not been very lucky with all kinds of awards and victories. I wasn’t expecting my luck to change. So when I heard from the stage the name of my project I was very surprised. In my personal history it is a precedent. – Is this award important for you? Because, in
my opinion, you stay somewhat outside of show business... – I value this award because it made my grandma extremely happy. She along with all her neighbors watched the ceremony on TV and they were all very proud of me. For them it is an achievement. But I understand that a YUNA is not an achievement. You are right when you say that I try to stay away from show business. For me, this notion is not too pleasant and I find it even vulgar. It remained from the 1990s, and personally I feel it is dirty. Therefore, I try not to be part of this post-perestroika concept.
The main thing is music. It can be either popular or unpopular, regardless of whether it is part of show business. – What Ukrainian artists are similar to you in the sense that they remain outside of show business? – For example, Boombox. This group is supposedly in show business, but their image is perceived to be outside all the dirty processes. I very much respect the guys for this. Although I do not listen to their music every day.

– What kind of Ukrainian music do you listen to every day? – The music of the new generation of Ukrainian musicians. This is mainly performers that have appeared over the past few years: Jamala, Sophie Villy, Alloise, K.A.T.Y.A., Ivan Dorn, The Maneken... These are the people who are creating new, different music. And I really would not like to have this generation of Ukrainian musicians lost. These new musicians have nothing to do with those who were on stage in the 1990s, who were not able to sing, who performed using recordings. A generation of artists emerged at that time that did not sing live. We have inherited from them a note on posters «Live Sound,» which is perceived as a special option. No one in the world uses such a description. A concert is a priori live sound. Recordings are not supposed to be used during concerts. – Do you believe that your generation will succeed in making modern Ukrainian music fashionable and popular? – Of course, I believe it. Otherwise, I would not be working on this. If I didn’t believe in it then I would have made music a hobby. – Your style is called folktronika. Such music is not popular on the radio. Are you upset that radio stations are not likely to play ONUKA songs? – My music can be heard on several network radio stations, and on various Internet radio stations, which are becoming popular, replacing conventional FM stations. It’s not a tragedy for me that the majority of FM stations don’t play my songs. In fact, I would not like my music to air next to vulgar songs. I want to be a representative of the new generation, which captures new spaces and performs new functions, including educational and humanitarian ones. – After all, you studied folk culture. So you are performing a culturological function, combining electronic music with folk instruments... – When I studied at the Kyiv University of Culture and Arts, I didn’t think that a profession in cultural studies would be interesting. The teaching was not interesting, it was very literary, archival. Only a few subjects were exciting. Therefore, I think none of my fellow students thought they would work in that field. The perception of everything folk related, authentic is a big problem in our country. – Probably a lot of love for all things Ukrainian and folk was instilled in you by your grandfather – the famous Ukrainian folk instrument maker and musician Oleksandr Shlonchyk? – That’s right! In my grandfather’s house, in Chernihiv, there was always an atmosphere of comfort, of a Ukrainian family. Although my grandfather spoke Russian, or rather a mix of Ukrainian and Russian. He had a workshop in which he worked from dawn to dusk. And when I came from Kyiv to visit my grandparents, I spent all my time there. I still remember the dizzying smell of wood. Each morning my grandpa started with a «ritual»: he took a wooden flute into the garden and played some trills, imitated a nightingale. This is the cinematic picture from my childhood. – It is true that your grandfather restored Taras Shevchenko’s torban (a kind kobza)?
– Yes, it is true. It was a difficult task. For a long time Shevchenko’s instrument was at a museum in Hlukhiv, were it was eaten by wood borers. Insects destroyed almost all the wood. The main condition for the restoration was that only the type of wood used to make the original torban could be used to restore the instrument. And that type of pine tree no longer existed. Therefore, no one took up this restoration. My grandfather somehow learned that in Chernihiv, in Kateryna’s Cathedral, which was being restored, there was some of this wood in the attic. My grandfather, being quite an adventurous man, went into the woods to the closed church and took some samples of the wood. And from this he made a new sound board for Shevchenko’s instrument. It was a perfect restoration. There was even a special commission whose task was to prove that Shlonchyk restored Taras Shevchenko’s instrument, and did not make a new one. I was only four or five years old then, but I still remember what an honor it was
for our family. I have a photo of me next to my grandfather who is holding Shevchenko’s torban. It was as if a UFO landed in our house: such light and energy radiated from the poet’s instrument. – What is your typical day? – Each new day is not like the other. Except for the fact that I start every morning by drinking a glass of water, and during the day I also drink a lot of water. And so, my life depends on the period. There are periods when work needs to be done in the studio, so every day I go to the studio. There are periods of filming and interviews. There are periods when I’m on tour. How to Get a Nice and Safe Tan The long-awaited summer has come, and together with it the period of holidays and vacations. This is a time when one especially craves that seaside or riverside vacation under the sun. A nice suntan is a dream of many women and men. But how do you get a suntan without harm? First of all, do not forget that the safe period of time for sunbathing is before 11 a.m. and after 3 p.m. From 11 a.m. till 3 p.m. there is a high risk to get sunburnt. That’s why it’s better to spend this period of time in the shade. Different cosmetic products for safe tanning will help you avoid problems with skin. When buying them, it’s necessary first of all to pay attention to their SPF index. What is that? It’s an indicator of the UVB protection level secured by a product. The index shows what amount of rays is transmitted by a lotion. (Exactly transmitted, not stopped.) Herewith, the initial rays are taken as a measuring unit. It means that a lotion or a spray, for example, with an 8 SPF index transmits 1/8 of rays, with 10 SPF index 1/10, and with 20 SPF index 1/20. Besides the SPF index, modern sunscreens have UV filters, emollient and moisturizing components, vitamins, and antioxidants. All these agents not only protect your skin from the sun rays, but also maintain its moisture balance. While choosing a sunscreen, it is necessary to take into account what complexion phototype you have. There are several types: 1. Very fair, light skin, sometimes with freckles. Fair or red hair. Blue or green eyes. Usually, sunburns on such skin appear practically immediately. Specialists recommend people with this type of skin use creams and lotions with SPF index at least 30, and during first days in the sun not less than 40. 2. Fair skin, brown or blue eyes, light blond hair. The second phototype of complexion differs only slightly from the first one. That’s why people belonging to it get sunburns just as easily if they stay in the sun for a long period of time and do not use sunscreen. But still, little by little, they can accustom their skin to staying under the bright sun rays. However, at the very beginning of

the holiday, when the skin hasn’t yet adapted to active tanning, it is necessary to use sunscreens with a high SPF index: 30 and higher. Later, a protection level can be gradually lowered even to 15. 3. Rather fair skin, but it tans quickly and evenly. Dark blond or brown hair. Usually brown eyes. Representatives of this phototype can easily get a bronze skin tint without suffering from sunburns. But they still need sunscreens since they protect not only from sunburns but also from the harmful effect of radiation. In this case it would be enough to use a sunscreen with SPF index from 8 to 15 even during the first period of sunbathing. 4. The fourth group includes swarthy people with brown and olive green skin, dark hair and brown eyes. Usually, they don’t need to fear sunburns. However, the ultraviolet influence can cause harm to their organism, particularly accelerate skin aging. So you better protect it. In this case it is enough to buy a sunscreen with SPF index less than 8. All phototypes should remember that all sunscreens should be applied to skin 20-30 minutes before sunbathing and again after each swimming session. Attention also should be paid to those body areas that most of all suffer from our forgetfulness and exposure to the sun. First of all, these are ears and the tops of our feet. Lip balm should be applied to lips. And of course all in good measure: however nice the sunscreen may be, it cannot protect those who stay in the sun for 10 hours a day. After sunbathing it is important to take care of your skin, since it needs rehydration. Any good moisturizing cream would be fine for this. Though, it would be better to buy a special aftersun. Many women use different oils adding them to a cream (jojoba, cacao, peach, olive, and even sunflower). It’s a matter of taste. If you aren’t allergic, you can experiment with this as much as you wish. Sun products can come in different forms: cream, spray, lotion, etc. Everything depends on personal preferences. For somebody it’s better to spray it, and for somebody else to apply it. Someone may prefer a dense consistency while others a softer one. There are lots of manufacturers of such cosmetics, but it’s better to focus on the already checked trade names of an average price category. Cheap products may not be of good quality while expensive ones may be overpriced due to the well-known trade name. Brut’s Ruble: The Fortune of Card Players In the end of 1915 gambling games were flourishing in Russia. Chasing easy prey, people played for money not only at clubs, but also in private apartments. Secret circles appeared, which one could enter only with a special recommendation. The reason was that the First World War was raging and, as it usually happens, all the negative phenomena of society started to resurface. At that time a legend appeared among card players about lucky rubles signed by Sergey Brut, the cashier at the State Bank who hanged himself when he lost a huge amount of money at cards. Thousands of people started hunting for those unique banknotes and the lucky men who found them cherished them. There was a custom in Russia which stipulated that all newly issued banknotes had to be signed by the manager of the State Bank and one of its cashiers. At a certain point the banknotes started to be issued with a facsimile of a certain Sergey Arkadyevich Brut, who worked as an inspector and then as a cashier. His signature appeared on all paper money issued within 1898-1910, including the one-ruble notes. And everything would have been alright if the cashier wasn’t such a compulsive gambler. First he played for small sums, but each time his financial appetite grew and it resulted in double bets. In 1914, Brut suffered a great misfortune. He lost all his money in a card game. In order to win it back, he secretly took a significant sum from a cash office which he also gambled away. He knew that no miracle would help him return the money and that he was staring at a future in jail, so Sergey Brut decided to commit suicide. He hanged himself. Right after that, gamblers started spreading an urban legend that a ruble with his signature was especially lucky. Well, no wonder. From time immemorial it was believed that a loop or any thing that used to belong to a hanged man is capable of bringing fortune in financial affairs. The excitement was further provoked by the newspaper The Petersburg Letter. In January 1915, a story was published about a lucky banknote dated 1898 with Brut’s signature. It said that a player who staked such a banknote won a great deal of money. According to the legend, Brut’s ruble was the last one in his pocket. The small bill helped him not only to win it back, but also make a large profit. The news spread at lightning speed among the gamblers. Everybody started to search frantically for those charms, and moneychangers on pop-up markets realized that they could take advantage of it. They spread rumors that the rubles signed by Brut were rare. Allegedly, no one could easily obtain them at a state bank and it was only possible to buy them from agents. Therefore, the price for a lucky banknote grew to an enormous sum of 20-25 rubles!

In order to weaken the speculative sentiment, the Ministry of Finance published an article where they assured the people that the State Bank was issuing identical banknotes and that they are not scarce. Nevertheless, the number of people who wanted to get one didn’t dwindle. Then, one of the Ukrainian newspapers wrote, “In these latter days in Kyiv and Kyiv Province more and more people are interested in purchasing Brut’s ruble. Others stared with envy at their owners as if they owned a small fortune.” Brut’s ruble became a symbol of the epoch. It appeared in the works of writers of that time. The Russian poet Nikolai Aseev wrote in his poem: I hear him like in loudspeaker curving the back holding tightly in his hand the ruble of suicide Brut This talisman is mentioned in the novel The River, 1930, by the Russian sailor Sergey Kolbasev: “Let us chance it!” agreed Oleg Mikhailovich Malinichev. He took a wallet strapped with a rubber band out of the inside pocket in his sailor jacket and put two new Soviet five-ruble bills in the middle of the table and a crumpled tsarist ruble by their side.” “Is it Brut’s?” asked Lobachevskyi. “Yes, that’s it,” answered Malinichev carefully smoothing out the dirty yellow bill. “There’re signatures of both fraudsters: Brut’s and Pleske’s and note the number is the same like the one on a triple cologne: two zeros four thousand seven hundred and eleven. I paid twenty-five rubles for it before the War.” “It’s too expensive,” said Babushkin. “Back then you could have had a delicious lunch at a good restaurant for twenty-five rubles. It would feed two people and pay for a bottle of wine. ” Brut’s rubles can be bought from collectors even today. However, they are not so widespread. And their price is considerable. String Bag:
Hit of the USSR Times People who witnessed the USSR epoch and even lived there for at least a few years will never forget the netted bags called avoska (a “maybebag”) which every Soviet family had and which were incredibly popular. They were of different colors, could bear heavy weights up to seventy kilograms and, if needed, they could be rolled into a small ball and easily fit in a pocket. Of course, no plastic bag could compete with them. Moreover, in the 1950s or 70s they weren’t even in production. That’s why the string bag can be considered as one of the absolute symbols of the Soviet Union. Surprisingly, despite its popularity in the USSR the netted bag didn’t originate in there as it is widely thought. It was created by a Czech businessman Vavřín Krčil who at first manufactured nets for setting women’s hair. When that business didn’t bring him a desirable profit he without hesitations fixed handles to the nets and started to sell them as bags. Even though he managed to return some part of his investment, his know-how wasn’t widely promoted. The Czech’s invention became popular only few decades later and found its new life in the Soviet Union. There string bags were used to carry everything possible: footballs and boxing g l o v e s , groceries, library books, empty bottles. You could meet a housewife carrying potatoes in it or a gray-haired academic carrying important technical documentation. Rumor has it that the netted bag received its name from a comment by the artist Arcady Raikin. At the time when store shelves where empty he joked in one of his monologues: “And this is a maybe-bag! Maybe, I’ll bring something to home in it.” The avoska really took up minimum space and people often carried it just in case – maybe they’d manage to buy something on their way home from work, for example. It’s obvious that nowadays this bag wouldn’t take on only for one reason – nobody wants other people to see what they’re carrying. However, in the USSR people’s worldview was quite different. People were more openhearted and didn’t hide anything. Actually, there was no point in it because products at stores were absolutely the same. And when somebody was lucky enough to buy something in short supply it was rather a reason for pride. Then, they carried the avoska ostentatiously, showing off their winnings. Later, the netted bag lost its popularity, it was replaced by multicolored plastic bags. You are unlikely to get hold of an avoska nowadays. Moreover, this bag moved from mass society market to the elite fashion. For example, the netted bags that cost only a few kopecks then is now featured in a Dolce & Gabbana promo. You are more likely now to see Madonna than a housewife with such an accessory.

The Founder’s Diary Rome is definitely worth writing about. But why do I keep procrastinating? Today it dawned upon me that it’s a habit from school. Many times I put off my homework and all kinds of writing assignments. And sometimes I managed not to write at all. Time passed by and we were already studying other topics. Maybe I felt that teachers didn’t read what we were writing. It was physically impossible to read all that scrabbled nonsense! Was a pen uncomfortable to hold? Or was it because we were told what and how to write, what to think about, and how this should be expressed? Was it a means of education or one more method of the
When I flew from Bologna to Moscow I was 100% sure that I would use the flight’s three hours to write in my diary, which I had been meaning to do for the last four days. I procrastinated in spite of the fact that I was at home the last three days since it was raining cats and dogs. I had loads of time. I had nothing to do and those were my most meaningless days in the last two months. I even thought, “I wish I wouldn’t dawdle away the last day of my life when it comes.” Such a day can leave behind a taste of meaninglessness and worthlessness of life. So, I didn’t write anything on the plane. I snoozed, listened to an audio book. And now in Moscow, I’m writing about Italy. Gogol was writing about Russia in Italy and I‘m writing about Italy in Russia. How about that? No wonder, I’m not Gogol! Soviet unfreedom? It doesn’t matter. What matters is that I didn’t want to write it. Now I can write what I want, but!.. The habit remains. It’s a bad habit. It seems that those people who don’t write and read aren’t really people. You start to think when you pick up a pencil. There, thinking skills where discouraged. Indecision and herd management were cultivated. The most important was to follow the Leader. Now, I’m writing and thinking whether this nonsense will be read. Will there be questions again? Mister authortraveler! Where are the prices for accommodation and routes to follow? I will give you some, but not many.
Then it’s better not to read what I’m writing. It’s better to buy a normal guide for 400 roubles. Here, I describe my thoughts and my travels. The world I was lucky to see. I was going to take my children to Rome for more than a year. Rome isn’t just a capital of Italy, it’s the birthplace of Dead Souls and The Inspector General. And many other Russian things were created in Italy. Rome is Spartacus and Michelangelo, the Vatican City, and the Colosseum. It’s very hot there in summer and the city is flooded with people. And in winter I don’t have the time or the luck for Rome. Though, it’s just 380 km

to Rome from the place where I spend my summer holidays with my family. It’s a four-hour drive on their roads. Everything went right. The weather was fine. And I made up my mind. My three children, their baby-sitter, my wife and I. But it was not easy to find a hotel on Booking.com for three children and three adults. For 1,000 euros per night – no problem. But any fool with money can find such accommodation. And we preferred to live in the very center in order to walk everywhere by foot. To the Vatican City and to the Colosseum. Another story or chapter can be written on the options the Internet offered me. Some small rooms with added beds for 700 euros per night. There were also options for 2,000-3,000 euros. It was terrible! But most hotels replied, “Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate your group.” I planned to stay for two days. I wanted two nights, but it was too much. There is still a crisis in the world. And the euro isn’t the same as back in 2014. But Grand Hotel Plaza, where I already stayed several times, offered me two rooms for 300 euros per day. I confirmed the reservation, got up at 6 a.m., and at 7 a.m. we set off from our village to the Eternal City of Rome. I had a big seven-passenger Mercedes. There was a room for everybody and it was great. If there are no traffic jams, the Italian toll road drive passes without incidents. Four hours later we were in Rome, we arrived at 12 p.m. One of the greatest travel tricks is checking into and out of a hotel. In fact, you pay for twenty-four hours and they call it “a night”! Truly, since you check in at 2 p.m. and have to check out at 12 p.m. Two hours! I don’t like this. That’s a petty somehow. It’s good that they take your luggage to a checkroom at 12 p.m., and till the evening you are free to walk. Otherwise, it’s too petty. We were lucky! At 12 p.m. our rooms were ready and we could check in! Later on we had lunch and visited the Colosseum. I laid a whole route to it in order to visit the Trevi Fountain, the Palatine Hill,
and the very Colosseum on the way. The 2.5-km-long Spanish Steps on the way back was no big deal for my children: a six-year-old, eight-year-old, and two-yearold in a baby carriage managed that easily. Before the trip we watched Gladiator with Russell Crowe, and my oldest children (they watched it, as for the two-yearold baby I wasn’t sure) hoped to see gladiators, wild animals or something like that. The Trevi Fountain was under repair. Water was drained out of it, but so as not to upset the tourists, a glass path was laid over the fountain, so that they could walk and look into it. By the way, it is rather deep there. Probably, that’s why it is forbidden to bathe there. The Colosseum was overcrowded. It’s better to buy tickets via the Internet. Otherwise, the torture by queue would be much longer. When you are bursting into the arena, do not run to the right together with everyone else. On the left, there are stairs and an elevator to the upper level. Otherwise, you’ll either go away not coming up, or will have to return. In Rome, there are still some buildings that are 2,000 years old. The feeling is quite impressive. And after watching Gladiator the children were delighted. Though, my 6-year-old asked, “Will no one be killed today?” However, it did not go without any incidents: a German stepped on my foot. In such cities and places, people get stupid and become blind from walking all day. Not only attention, but also good manners disappear. People don’t let children pass, push women, jump the gun, etc. Overall, in a way it’s a loss of humanity. That was all right. Thank God, we also were running along the Roman stone road near the arch. Before, when I was stupider and had more money, I used to go shopping, not paying attention to gray facades of Catholic churches. Now I try not to pass them up without go inside. There are benches and sometimes an organ is being played. You can have a rest and pray to God. It is necessary to thank God for the world and your legs for walking through
it, and your eyes for seeing it, to give thanks for the time given to us. It is said that, when dying, people regret two things: they loved little and travel little. Roman churches, just like all the Italian churches, are like music in stone. The children already knew about benches and asked to come in. I hanged outside for a while, came in and saw them kneeling with their hands put together. I asked what they were doing. They answered, “He said to pose in such a way.” I didn’t understand who “HE” is exactly, but I didn’t asked. We stayed there as long as we wanted and went ahead passing palaces with bridges connecting them to parks. It’s for the elite to take a walk without having to go out to the street. There was always enough rabble in Rome. We had dinner in the restaurant Due Ladroni. Just three of us. The rest already couldn’t and didn’t want to eat. The food in the restaurant was tasty and not expensive in general. It opens at 8 p.m. In Rome, if you go out to dinner at 8 p.m. there is no one around. You think they are in crisis. But in an hour there are no tables available. The hubbub of voices was deafening and I couldn’t hear myself. It seemed that waiters didn’t know any other movements other than running. At the same time they didn’t forget to smile and exchange a few words with the guests. We went on foot to the hotel. In April, evenings in Rome are chilly – 13 to 15°C, but not like those in Moscow – 0 to -1°C. People were still walking, but there were few cars. As I was walking, I thought that almost 200 years ago Nikolai Gogol was walking along this street. What wind brought him from the very Dykanka to Rome? Grilled Dishes: A Combination of Pleasant and Healthy Delights Summer is a period of vacations in the countryside, outdoor picnics, and delicious dinner parties. Is there anything better than grilled meat, fish, mushrooms, or vegetables? The result is very tasty and the process is quite entertaining for the entire company as it creates the atmosphere of summer break and joy. And even the simplest dish cooked on the grill has an exotic flavor. Cooking over a fire is an old method of processing food. It helped our ancestors cook tastier and safer food and allowed them to store it for longer periods of time. Nowadays, few people (vegetarians excluded) can resist the smell of meat grilled at an outdoor picnic, in one’s own backyard, or at a respectable restaurant’s kitchen. Grilled dishes have already become a popular gastronomic trend. What’s more, they are easy and fast to cook.

Besides, many nutritionists stress particular advantages of food cooked this way. Most often in everyday life, we boil food or pan fry it. But we’ve heard about the harm of fried food many times: the meal is greasier and forms a crispy crust which makes a dish more piquant, but also contains carcinogens harmful for our body. Usually, boiled products are not so tasty, although they are considered to be dietary and healthier. So, is this really true? Scientists from the University of Murcia and the University of Complutense (Spain) after some studies found out that, for example, the best way to cook vegetables is on the grill. They did an analysis of most common methods of processing food, including boiling, roasting, microwaving, grilling, and pan frying. After that they compared the antioxidant properties of the vegetables processed by each of those methods. It appeared that the largest number of antioxidants was preserved in the grilled vegetables. And boiled vegetables contained the least number of them!
We know that vegetables are one of the main providers of antioxidants, which are substances binding free radicals in the body whereby they slow down oxidative processes and prevent ageing and development of many diseases, including cancer. Grilled meat is as tasty as fried meat, although it contains less grease and fewer carcinogens since no oil is used for grilling and grease contained in meat is rendered and flows down (theoretically on a special tray). A skillful cook won’t allow the meat to burn, and as a result it won’t form a harmful charred crust. Moreover, experienced chefs make sure that grease does not drip on fire. It’ll allow you to avoid smoke that can spoil the taste and flavor of the meat. If there’s no special tray, you can use a piece of foil. Meat is better when marinated in advance. For the marinade you can use whatever you like: dry wine, vinegar, beer, lemon or orange juice, honey, yogurt, various spices and herbs. It is recommended to salt meat only at the end of cooking so that it will stay juicy. You can cook seafood, fish, or chicken in the same way. It is better to grease lean meat, like chicken breast, beforehand with a little bit of olive or sunflower oil (to avoid overgreasing, you can use a culinary brush). Grilled vegetables can be a nice garnish to a fragrant steak. It is very important to choose them right. Not every grilled vegetable is juicy and savory. Chefs recommend choosing only young and fresh vegetables, preferably seasonal, and cultivated in the areas they are sold in. So

you can be sure they are fresh. A good choice would be such vegetables as summer squash, zucchini, eggplants, asparagus, bell peppers, tomatoes, and bulb onions. The juicier the vegetable, the better it will turn out. A safe choice also is grilled champignons. Pepper and tomatoes usually are cooked whole. Eggplants and summer squash may be sliced or cooked whole with their ends cut off. Eggplants and summer squash need to be cooked longer than other vegetables. Even when they are already soft, after taking them off the grill it is recommended to put them into a pan, cover it and wait for 10 minutes. Vegetables should then be peeled, cut into pieces, and consumed as a separate dish or as ingredients of a warm or cold salad. Potatoes also can be grilled, though it is better to cook them in foil after greasing them with vegetable oil. A good garnish to grilled meat and vegetables is whole-wheat bread. It’s that simple to get a complete menu with a balanced complex of proteins, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals. Grilling does not take much time and effort, and also makes it possible to preserve the products’ nutrients. Such dishes are delicious, healthy, and low-calorie. Я буквально посивів і постарів за кілька днів. Це була справжня психічна травма. Спочатку я хотів був умерти». Утім, шквал критики в Радянському Союзі аж ніяк не вплинув на популярність фільму за кордоном. Його з успіхом показують у Берліні, Лондоні,
Парижі, а після прем’єри на Венеціанському кінофестивалі Довженка називають «Гомером від кіно». Картина стає культовою і розпочинає власне життя. Тоді Чарлі Чаплін скаже: «Слов’янство поки що дало світові в кінематографії одного великого митця, мислителя і поета – Олександра Довженка». Цікаво, що сам автор про такий успіх дізнається значно пізніше і буде дуже здивований цим. На батьківщині його фільм реабілітують у 1958 році, коли в Брюсселі, на першому повоєнному огляді досягнень людства, «Земля» увійде до 12 кращих фільмів у історії кіно. Motor Rally from Korchma: Nice Mood and Good Deeds
While in Ilf and Petrov’s novel The Little Golden Calf the protagonist Ostap Bender decided to organize a motor rally to take a stance against off-roads and slovenliness, workers of Korchma organize rallies to cheer up the citizens of Moscow and to do some good. This May, our motorcade drove along the route the Garden Ring–Bolotnaya Square–Leninskyi Avenue–Sparrow Hills. The end of the route was in Poklonnaya Hill where we laid flowers at the Victory Monument.
Furthermore, participants of the motor rally stopped many times on their way and gave out to passers-by our corporate publication, the newspaper Bulba NEWS, and to children sweets and a beautifully illustrated magazine Tarasik. It is good to know that our restaurant chain is widely known among customers in Moscow. Residents often stop by to ask about new offers, to thank us for a warm welcome, or just to take a picture!

Korchma at the Ethnic Party of the Communitas Project
The second Communitas project took place in Moscow, which consists of a series of parties dedicated to different nations. Its aim is to improve the relations between ethnic groups and familiarize them with the culture and customs of different nations. This time, the party was fully dedicated to Ukraine, which has very rich traditions and customs. It’s no wonder that one of the party organizers was the Korchma Taras Bulba restaurant chain, which is also called the unofficial Embassy of Ukraine in Russia. At the party, its chefs presented all the diversity of
Ukrainian cuisine and gave a workshop on preparing steamed varenyky. It caused a storm of emotions among the guests. Everyone was happy to put on a cap and start making the varenyky. Soon, most of the guests moved to the kitchen. And of course the guests of the party could not resist the delicious assortment of salo, home-made sausages, cold-baked pork, pies, natural fruit drinks, compote, and kvass. Without waiting till the start of the event, most of the guests hurried up to taste all the dishes.
