Hit or miss? The Hunger Games:
By Nate Tibbles What does community service mean to you? Is it canned food drives and soup kitchen holidays, or is it much more than that? The Interact program provides a wonderful platform for students across the globe to participate in community service and be a part of something greater than themselves. Best of all,

A Review of Mockingjay Part 1 from the ultimate fangirl On 20 November 2014, I was able to see the Thursday night showing of the third installment of the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay Part 1. The show started at eight o’clock, but the theatre filled up very quickly just after 7. Before the show, I saw former Rainier students April Beale and Daniel Rozo. They

weren’t very surprised to see me considering I have been obsessed with the series since the first film came out in 2012. For example, I dressed up as Katniss for Halloween, read the books five times, and often wear my hair in a Katniss braid. During the movie, it was obvious that people didn’t read the books. If they did, they wouldn’t be surprised at some scenes. All in all it was a pretty good movie adaptation of a book because they stayed mostly true to the book. However, for those of you have read the books, there are a lot of minor changes and if you want to know where the movie ends in the book, its at about halfway through Chapter 13. In my opinion, I don’t think Jennifer Lawrence (Katniss) was the star she was supposed to be, but the other actors, such as Josh Hutcherson (Peeta) and Liam Hemsworth (Gale) made up for it by improving from the previous films. Mockingjay Part 1 was set up nicely for the final film in the Hunger Games series, Mockingjay Part 2, which is set to come out on 20 November 2015.

Red Storm Rising by Tom Clancy
By William Teav Published in 1986 and written by Tom Clancy, Red Storm Rising describes a hypothetical war between the Soviet Union and NATO. The novel, set in the late 1980s, begins with a devastating terrorist attack on a Soviet oil refinery. With economic disaster on the horizon, senior Soviet politicians decide to seize oil from the Middle East. However, with the danger of NATO retaliation, the Soviet politicians instead choose to invade West Germany and catch NATO off guard. Despite being outnumbered and low on supplies, small pockets of Brit ish, German, and American units successfully stall the Soviet onslaught. However, their successes are tempered when elite Soviet paratroopers storm Iceland. Soviet aircraft and submarines now sneak undetected into the Atlantic, sinking American ships and preventing the resupply of NATO. The situation also darkens for West Germany. Despite unacceptable losses, the Soviets now threaten to capture its industrial heartland. With time running out, will the United States be able to deliver enough reinforcements? Or will West Germany fall to the Red Army? Red Storm Rising is a great read for many reasons. First, there are a lot of high-quality characters from both sides. Second, each engagement is covered in precise imagery. Third, the storyline is fast-paced with numerous settings. Finally, the author uses foreshadowing and false leads to prevent the reader from making accurate predictions (and thus simulating the confusion of war). Lively characters, dramatic action, plot twists, and never-ending tension sum up this great Tom Clancy thriller. If you are going to read any 700 page book, make sure you choose Red Storm Rising.
Grumpy: Kittens because if you blended them, they wouldn’t scream that much. Also, there isn’t much flesh so you can just rinse the blender and toss it into the dishwasher. Serenity: Oh wow hunny, I mean if I had to chose I’d go with the kittens too. There are too many cats in the world already. Don’t they have 9 lives? (But seriously though, that’s a messed up question. I highly recommend that you see a psychiatrist!). How do I ask out my best friend? Grumpy: Ten dollars say you will regret it when you break up. You’re only in high school... Serenity: Ah, young love. I remember as if it was yesterday. Oh the pain, oh the heartbreak... Do they like you back? Is your relationship so rock solid that it would be okay if they reject you? Are they Beyoncé? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, then go with your gut. If you said NO to ANY of these questions, I would advise you not to say anything at the moment until you’re completely sure it’s the right choice. Do you want to build a snowman? Grumpy: I don’t wAnna, I am tired or Elsa would. Serenity: Hell to the no. Do you know how much work it takes to actually physically build one? I could be drinking hot chocolate and watching Netflix. Sorry, maybe next time. Hello Serenity. I have a problem in which I’m not sure how to approach. To give some context, my family is a heavily religious Christian family. One day (last Friday), my father came home from work, and we all did our usual Friday chores. He told me to clean the attic, which I did promptly -- but, I found something very interesting. I found a VCR tape of one of my father’s old Sunday School video tape recordings he used to do back in the 1980s. It featured my father, who called himself “Krist Kev” in the broadcast, and his good friend Nick who sadly passed away 2 months ago. Upon discovering this, I was hit with shock, shame, and astonishment. I refused to talk to him directly ever since. What do I do? How do I cope with this? Serenity: Wow. It sounds like you’re going through a lot. I understand you might feel uncomfortable or confused about your feelings towards your dad, but avoiding the situation is not the way to handle it. You need to sit down and have this conversation with him. Avoiding the issue only makes the problems worse, especially if you leave them to stew. Try to approach it by saying, “Hey dad, we need to talk. I found something of yours that I need you to explain and help me understand.” If that talk doesn’t work out, you’ve at least tried to express your concern. Best of luck.

A sea of students at the Fall Leadership Conference (Nate Tibbles).
Interact
we have an Interact Club right here at Rainier! Interact devotes most of its energy to a variety of community service events, including trimming rose bushes at a rose garden, cooking tempura at the Obon Festival in Japantown, or looking after kids during an event at a local church. “My favorite service event was probably the rose garden,” says Arran Robinson, a freshman at Rainier. “I liked seeing all of the different colors of the roses and all of the smells. ” Interact also aims to build a strong community among club members. Cara Nguyen, director of Interact’s Area 6, says, “The experiences that one gains from Interact are unparalleled; lifelong friends are made, important life lessons are learned, and above all, a passion for service is developed.” Here in Santa Clara County, we find ourselves among the single largest Interact district in the entire world. Being in East San Jose, Rainier loans itself to Area 6, the largest area in the district. Earlier this year, Interact held its Fall Leadership Conference, an annual gathering of Interactors from all across the district. This year, The Fall Leadership Conference (FLC), was the single largest gathering of Interactors in the world, boasting over 4,000 attendees. “Going to FLC is always a life-changing experience,” says John Gundayao, Co-President of the Interact Club here at Summit Rainier. “Seeing over 4,000 Interactors crowded into one room makes you realize how much we as an organization can make a difference in the world,” John recalls. The Interactors then got to hear a speech given by Ro Khanna, a former member of President Obama’s cabinet. Afterwards, the domestic and international projects Interactors will be working on this year were announced. The domestic project, entitled “Open Heart, Open Arms” is devoted to helping children in the US struggling with hunger, bullying, and difficulties learning. The international project is devoted to adopting villages in Kenya and is called “Home Sweet Home”. In such a big area, in a big district, tackling BIG problems, Summit Rainier might seem like a little fish in a truly massive pond, but that doesn’t mean that Rainier students are unable to help the organization. Cara Nguyen would assure people otherwise. “Despite its recent creation, [Summit Rainier] has already started to make waves in the community. In collaboration with several other schools in the area, Summit Rainier has helped refugee families overseas as well as help out the citizens of our local communities.”

STOP-MOTION MAGIC The Boxtrolls A Review of
By Jose-Luis Barragan and Ben Gilmore
(blogs.indiewire.com)
Its hard to walk into a kid’s movie these days and expect something decent, so it’s nice to finally have one thats worth the price of admission. The Boxtrolls is the latest stop-motion flick from Laika Studios, the company behind Coraline (2009) and ParaNorman (2012). Loosely based on the Alan Snow’s novel, Here Be Monsters, the film follows Eggs, a human boy who lives underground with a crowd of creatures known as boxtrolls. They come up to the streets at night in search of random trinkets and relics, but must keep an eye out for Archibald Snatcher, an exterminator that specializes in catching boxtrolls. Snatcher has a fixated dream of owning a white hat and being part of the White Hat society. To achieve this, he vowed to rid the town of Cheesebridge of all the boxtrolls. Soon, there is only a handful boxtrolls left and it’s up to Eggs to rescue his troll brethren and unmask Snatcher for the cruel, greedy monster he is. The biggest thing this movie has going for it is its animation. Stop-motion is a dying art, but whenever a movie comes out to showcase its power, it never fails to attract audience. They’re so more appealing to look at than most animated movies, usually because they are all made on a computer, but watching this movie, you know that the filmmakers poured their heart and soul into every little painstaking detail. It’s all for the sake of realism in the movie’s world. It also has some of the most clever writing I have seen all year. The dialogue is so snappy and fluent, I nearly thought Quentin Tarantino wrote this script. There is plenty of memorable characters and high-class actors who voice them. Definitely the most entertaining to watch is Winnie, voiced by Elle Fanning. She has a childish but disturbing fascination with the boxtrolls and jumps to all sorts of conclusions. Even Snatcher’s henchmen have a huge amount of screentime and character development. It seems that the director took extreme care of the writing before focusing on the humor, while most kids movies just put an onslaught of jokes to make kids laugh for no real reason and hope that some part of the story sticks. That’s not to say that the jokes are bad, again, they are really cleverly written and treat its audience with intelligence. Overall, the flick is great to watch alone or with friends, and is a blast to see on the big screen. For the ones who love edgy animated movies, this is definitely up their alley; just make sure to bring nachos, ‘cause there’s plenty of cheese.

“An Acquired Taste”
The Laughter Battle
By Nate Tibbles I went into the concert almost completely uninformed about not only the Prazak String Quartet and Gwendolyn Mok, but also the conventions of concerts like this. My thought process was that if I was completely blind to context, I could give an ‘outsider’ perspective. My perspective was, in its own right, certainly that of an outsider. While the performers were clearly talented, perhaps even excellent, I found it difficult to pay attention during many parts of the concert. This was no fault of the performers. Classical music seems to be an acquired taste. While there were certainly parts of the concert when I was impressed with the range of sounds that could be produced by these instruments, and while there were times when I genuinely enjoyed the music, I can’t say that I loved the concert; I am just not the intended audience for it. Without the assistance of a vocal element to help guide me, I didn’t know what to feel for most of the pieces performed. Le Petit Trianon was a rather ornate, compact venue. It was very well decorated for such a small venue, showing such a reasonably priced performance. There was even a small art gallery inside. The atmosphere of the theatre was a nice highlight of the night. The San Jose Chamber Music Society should be recognized for this show, as should Gwendolyn Mok and the Prazak String Quartet. Combine their talent with the beauty of Le Petit Trianon, and you may have a nice night. Just don’t expect to be converted into a fan of classical music if you are not one.
By Alyssa Martinez I had the pleasure to attend the Comedy Sportz improv show at the Camera 3 Theaters in Downtown San Jose on Saturday, October 18th. Comedy Sportz is an improv group that competes for the audience’s laughter. They do this by always making sure that the audience is always part of the show and by putting on a show that the audience will not forget. They perform at Camera 3 Theaters that is located in none other than Psycho Donuts, where we were able to get snacks before, during intermission, and after the show. The show consisted of two teams: the San Jose Snarks with Hilary Percy and Derek McCaw, as well as the Jokeland Laughletics with Jeff Kramer and Neil Curran. The two teams battled for laughs the whole night with the alternative joker, Andy Alder, who played for the two teams. To make sure the jokes were clean, the referee for the night was Drew Simchik and on the keyboard, to make sound effects, was Scott Getline. With David Scott keeping track of who got the loudest laughs at the end of the night, the Jokeland Laughletics won by 1 point over the San Jose Snarks. It is a great show for your whole family to enjoy and have a good laugh. We really were Comedy Sportz ‘loyal fans’ that night! Come in with an open mind that is filled with ideas and let yourself have fun.

W here Are T hey Now?
By Haley Kim We all wonder what our former teachers are doing. Are they still teaching? Have they grown a beard? Do they still think about us?! Welcome to Where Are They Now, where we catch up with some of our departed teachers!
Ms Lee Ms. Lee was one of the founding Rainier teachers back in 2011, and taught Biology for the first two years and Chemistry last year. She moved away from the school for personal reasons, but still keeps in touch with her mentees every week. Read on to catch up with Ms. Lee!
Where, what, and who are you teaching now? Where: Los Altos High School What: Chemistry and Environmental Science Who: 9th grade through 12th grade
How does your new school compare to Rainier? Um, we have running water. It’s a big comprehensive high school, so there’s not that strong sense of community that Rainier has. Teachers aren’t as involved… in like, all the aspects of school, not like Rainier. So we pretty much teach and go home. We have office hours, during the day. There is a special schedule on Tuesdays, so students can go to any teacher. I just have office hours when students can commit. They just make appointments, and I just stay after and help them. Any words to Rainier students? Oh gosh, let me think. Oh, I have lots of things to say. *Laughs* Okay, let me think about that one. The first one is to really enjoy your high school experience, because Rainier really has a great sense of community, [being] a small school. And it makes it a very special place. I really feel like that the students of Rainier know each other– you might not think you know each other very well, but compared to other schools it is a very close school. Really make use of the teachers. Summit teachers are really there to help you succeed, but they can’t help you unless you ask. And of course, Ms. Lee says that she misses everyone a ton.

EXPERIMENTS AND FIELD TRIPS GALORE!
S e nd i n y o ur sho ut-o uts to t i nyur l . c o m / bbsho uto uts.
Do you miss the memory of field trips and fun experiments? Do you want to learn something new? If so, join the Science Club! Science Club members know how to have fun and learn at the same time. Last year’s adventures included visits to the Exploratorium, Synopsis Science Fair, Monterey Bay Aquarium, and Maker Faire. Throughout these field trips, club members pursued their quest for knowledge, learning about 3D printing, marine environments, plant growth, and much more. Science Club members have a daring (maybe crazy) side as well. During lunchtime, they have orchestrated a variety of wacky experiments, from jamming a whole pack of Mentos into a two-liter Coca Cola bottle to lighting a dollar bill on fire. What’s Science Club planning this year? To find out, I interviewed Science Club founder Emily Kobayashi. I also asked her about her favorite club activities and future plans for the club. Her most enjoyable club activity was making Shrinky Dinks, thin plastic films which shrink and thicken when heated in an oven. The fun part is drawing on the films prior to baking and being astonished when a miniature drawing pops out the oven. The field trip that Emily enjoyed the most was to the Exploratorium because of its wide variety of interactive exhibits. When asked what was planned for this year, Emily replied that she planned a field trip to the California Academy of Sciences and hints at a field Group Picture of Rainier and Tahoma Science Clubs before the Academy of trip to the NASA Ames research center.
