SUMMER
Editor’s letter
Welcome!
S
ummer is such a special time of the year – it brings family and friends together and, of course, there are those much-loved summer holidays! Some of my best memories are of heading up the coast on camping trips with our two excited kids in tow. Yes, there was the occasional campside drenching, but there were also lazy days, spent by the water, book in one hand and iceblock in the other. Which is one of Get in quick to nab this cute kiwi light for a fairyland at home (page 21)
the (many!) reasons I love this month’s camping story, from page 29, full of inspiration and great DIY projects to add a little bit of luxury to your next camp out. But if your holiday is more home than away, we have all you need to get your place into shape before a single visitor arrives (see from page 53). And here’s something to celebrate: our publication took out the best custom magazine gong at the NZ Webstar Magazine Media Awards 2022! Hope summer brings you plenty of good times, too.
Enjoy the issue!
Words Caitlin Olsen-Ludlow. Photography (editor) Sue Stubbs; inset) Simon Whitbread; (behind the scenes) Caroline Botting. Our set-up is for photographic purposes only; to avoid damage, remove gazebo canopy in extreme wind conditions.
Printed by Webstar. Paper fibre is from well-managed forests and other controlled sources. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
Behind the scenes For our gorgeous summer cover, our photography team were whirled through four seasons in one day at a beautiful lakeside spot. The weather was sunny and glorious one minute, strong winds whipping up a storm the next! A cute caravan came along to help set the scene and, just like that, our team was transported to those nostalgic days of summer holidays. We hope you will be, too.

HELP AT HAND If you’ve been tipped off that Santa plans to deliver play equipment to your kids this year, we can help. From $99, selected Bunnings stores can organise assembly (and, for an additional fee, delivery) of new play equipment and accessories purchased from Bunnings. Choose your play set and accessories, then arrange payment (and delivery) at the Special Orders Desk, or take it home. The team will arrange an assembler to come to you.* *First contact your local store to find out if this service is available. Booking cut-off dates vary based on region; visit bunnings.co.nz/ playassembly for more information.

KAI TIME
With help from Bunnings, Ōtāhuhu College celebrated a tradition shared across the Pacific, with Tongan and Samoan umu and a hāngī, the traditional Māori and Pasifika method for cooking in and on the ground. Bunnings provided donations and hands-on support from Manukau store team members, who worked with the college to transform a dilapidated area of its grounds into a māra kai (community garden), where the event was held. Samoan language teacher Meta Usufono (pictured above) said, “Many of our students have grown up in New Zealand so it’s important that they feel connected to their Pasifika roots.”

GARDEN DIARIES
Tie the stems of vining tomatoes, beans and other climbers to stakes or supports as plants grow. Use soft string or twine to prevent damage to 2 the stems.
LEMON BASIL
These zesty leaves are great with fish, chicken and Asian recipes. Plant in fertile soil and avoid overwatering.
Sow a row of carrots with kids’ snacks in mind. Try heirloom 3 varieties with a fun mix of yellow, white, orange and purple carrots. Feed hungry flowers to ensure they keep blooming. Annuals like regular feeding to ensure continuous blooms. 4 Fruiting plants will also benefit from a dose.
SWEET BASIL
An essential garnish for many Italian dishes, sweet basil grows well in beds or pots and enjoys warm weather.
After applying fertiliser around edible plants, delay harvesting for a few days and rinse well before cooking and eating. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or mulch, follow any instructions carefully and wear gloves and suitable protective equipment. Store all garden chemicals out of reach of children and pets.

Plant Christmas lilies for a white Christmas! The scented flowers bloom for weeks and can be picked for the vase, too.
Add flavour – and colour to summer salads and cooked dishes with fragrant basil. Try one or more of the varieties below.

Try your hand at producing eggplants. The long, narrow types are easier to grow than fatter globes but they are equally tasty. 6 Plant in full sun.
THAI BASIL
The slight liquorice flavour gives punch to noodle salads and rice paper rolls. Remove the flowers to prolong the harvest.

Festive bling Santa has you sorted, delivering everything you need for amazing Christmas decor, with Command removable hooks and clips
G
et out your fairy lights and the decorative wreaths: Christmas is coming and it’s time to fill your home with twinkly cheer. But an amazing Christmas display isn’t worth countless hooks and nails in your walls! Command decorating clips and hooks are the holiday helpers you need – they’re almost invisible, hold firmly and are easy to apply. And they’re also simple to take down when the festive fun is over. Read on for great ideas to create wow-inspiring displays with a little help from Command.
LIGHTS GALORE! There’s nothing more magical than a room full of Christmas lights... and it’s even more amazing if you can’t see how they’re held in place! Use *Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
Liven up a plain corner by hanging strings of bunting, fairy lights or baubles using clear hooks
Command decorating clips to securely cradle the cords, so your twinkly lights won’t go anywhere. Here’s another fun idea: hang a string of lights in the shape of a tree. Use the clips to secure the wires in place and create the perfect shape. Even better, as the clips are clear, it will look like the lights are clinging to the wall all by themselves.
A BOUNTY OF BUNTING It’s simple to secure string decorations, too. Dig out some tinsel or get the kids to make bunting or paper chains, and hang them with Command hooks. Then, when Christmas is over, you can even reuse the hooks by hanging your New Year’s decorations in the same spot!
STOCKING FILLER No mantelpiece to hang your stockings on? No worries! String some fairy lights or Christmassy twine across a corner of a room and secure with Command mini hooks on each wall. Top tip: add a few Command decorating clips if you want the string to hang straight and not sag under the weight of the stockings. Tie your stockings on with festive ribbon, otherwise you could thread the lights or twine through the stocking tabs.
From Noël to New Year’s, Command’s decorating clips and hooks will see you through the party season
Hang trinkets, garlands and even stockings with the Command range
Advertising promotion
No space for a tree? Deck the walls instead, securing some sparkle with decorating clips
Create a magical Christmas wonderland with twinkling lights cascading from mini hooks
RINGMASTER
Decorating clips allow you to add festive flair and fairy lights to the kids’ rooms, too
A wreath on your front door is a joyful way to celebrate the festive season, plus it provides all the festive feels every time you come home. Suspend yours virtually invisibly with a clear Command hook. A medium hook will hold up to 900g, which is more than enough to handle a bauble-laden wreath.
OFF YOUR TREE If your most treasured decorations are getting lost on an over-full tree, it’s time to branch out! By attaching Command mini hooks to a doorframe or the front of a piece of furniture, you can dangle your decorations – whether that’s the kids’ painted macaroni masterpieces or prized porcelain heirlooms – where you can see them. This is also a fab trick if there’s no room for a bulky tree at your place. Use Command mini hooks to hang trinkets on the wall, framed by a string of lights in the shape of a tree.

Tools & materials
1 Clamp a 2440mm x 1220mm sheet of 12mm plywood on a pair of sawhorses and cut in half with a jigsaw to create two squares. On one piece, use a framing square to mark horizontal and vertical centre-lines.
2 To draw the towers, mark 75mm either side of the vertical centre-line and 150mm in from the edges. Mark triangles for roofs, and 100mm x 54mmwide windows. Cut around the towers and along the horizontal line with a jigsaw.
3 To cut the windows, centre a 54mm holesaw and finish with a jigsaw. From the offcuts, cut extra triangle pieces for the roofs, battlements and a 150mm x 100mm-wide gate. Smooth around all cuts with 180-grit abrasive paper. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth.
4 With a roller and brush, apply primer and two coats of exterior paint, leaving to dry after each. Attach extra pieces with epoxy adhesive. At the back, pre-drill with a 2.5mm bit to attach three stakes with two saddle clips each, pinching closed with pliers and securing with 12mm screws.

GIANT FLOWERS & TOADSTOOLS Use your plywood offcuts to make these… Mark 1m x 50mm-wide stems with leaves either side. To make flowers, mark out a 300mmdiametre circle, drawing petals inside. Use holesaw offcuts as the centres. Cut flower shapes with a jigsaw, then sand and wipe away dust. Apply primer and two coats of exterior paint, leaving to dry after each. Position flowers on the stems, pre-drilling through the centre to secure with 18mm screws. Glue the flower centres over the screws. Behind the stems, secure 1200mm garden stakes with saddle clips and 12mm screws. Cut 350mm x 350mm toadstools. Sand, paint and install with 300mm reo bar edging stakes.
Keep in mind… Choose non-structural plywood and exterior paint to avoid moisture and UV damage. n Use power tools in a ventilated area clear of distractions and always wear a mask when cutting and sanding timber. n Keep power tools securely locked away from children. n

Inspired by an American ‘chuck box’, this caddy holds all the essentials. We’ve added handles, hooks and magnets to ensure equipment is secure when travelling
1 Cut the plywood according to the cutting list. Tip: For all joints, use a framing square to mark a line for screws on the best face, pre-drill with a 3mm bit and finish with a 6mm countersinking bit. Apply adhesive along raw edges, secure with 25mm screws and clamp while the adhesive dries.
4 Secure the shelf lip to the top shelf from underneath, position in the box, securing the shelf into the dividers and through the sides. At the back, mark lines to secure all the shelves, spacing the screws evenly. Use a cloth to seal all the plywood with two coats of oil, leaving to dry after each.
5 On the lid, mark a line 6mm in from the front edge to secure the lid lip. On the inside of the lid, at the back, mark 60mm in from the side edges to pre-drill and secure hinges with 12mm screws. Position the lid on the box, with the hinges outside the back panel, and secure.
8 On the front, mark 184mm from the edges and 60mm from the top to pre-drill and secure a 256mm cabinet handle, snapping the supplied screws to fit. Position pull handles on the sides, 185mm from the front and 75mm down, pre-drill through the holes, clamp packers inside and secure right through with 25mm screws. Tip: Packers allow for longer screws and add strength.
9 Centre a magnetic catch on the underside of the top shelf, with the strike plate on the front, 45mm down, securing with the supplied screws. Centre a sash fastener on the lid lip, with the catch on the front, pre-drill and install 15mm pan head screws with a screwdriver to avoid stripping. Tip: We chose black hardware, spray-painting the pull handles to match.

HANGING SHELF Create a moveable display that sports boho tassels Cut an offcut of 18mm hevea finger-jointed panel to 450mm x 300mm. Use a 10mm bit to drill holes 30mm in from the corners, sand and wipe away dust. Apply two coats of oil, leaving to dry after each. Cut 8mm cotton sash cord into two 3m lengths, wrapping tape around the ends to prevent fraying. Tie loop knots halfway along, then thread the ends through the front holes, knotting to leave 200mm excess. Thread 100mm x 30mm x 5mm S-hooks through the loop knots and enlist an extra pair of hands to hang the shelf. Thread the ends through the back holes, position the shelf straight using a small level, and mark the back ropes underneath with a pen. Take the shelf down to tie knots at the marks. LOW-IMPACT UPGRADES Even the simplest changes can be effective deterrents to potential intruders. Crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) is a design direction that makes your home less attractive to burglars, and harder for them to get away with breaking into your home.

Eyes on the prize
Kristy Cianci of The Design Partnership, which specialises in crime prevention through environmental design, advises being able to see your yard – and the letterbox. “Have visual control of your property,” she says. “Install a letterbox that can be securely locked, and have your mail collected while you’re away on holidays.” Protecting physical mail can help prevent identity theft. Clear sightlines – rather than fortress-like structures – are better on boundaries; for example, a ‘blade’ or picket fence can be an effective barrier, but a tall, solid option (such as brick or steel sheets) could shield criminal activity from view.
Window locks Guard dog!
Landscape helpers
Choose gravel for your driveway and pathways around your home – it’s impossible to walk on silently, preventing potential lawbreakers from making a stealthy approach. Thorny climbers like bougainvillea around windows and other potential access points don’t just look beautiful, they can also act as living ‘barbed wire’.
Glass houses

should stay away. According to State Insurance, the most common way of obtaining unwelcome access to a home is through an open or unlocked door or window* – adding window locks is an easy way to make your place more secure.

as you approach, without the need to reach for your keys or even your phone.” To access these and other functions remotely, add a Yale Connect Bridge to join the phone to your home’s wi-fi network. Another pattern that has been identified is that those planning to break into a home would first check whether it was occupied. Install a wi-fi-enabled wireless video doorbell that shows you who’s at the door via wi-fi link to your smartphone. With two-way audio, you can ward off any unwanted visitors.

is to use a home automation station such as Amazon Echo Show to network individual devices, ranging from door sensors to cameras to smart globes. This lets you establish a professional-level integrated system which you can control from your smartphone or tablet, helping to keep your home safe and secure.
Get smart
A smart lock and video doorbell are just two ways to harness the power of wi-fi connectivity. Many wireless alarm systems are designed for easy DIY set-up, and feature motion detectors as well as sensors that alert you when a door or window is opened. Add extra sensors or cameras that work with the base station and you can monitor the whole array from your smartphone, whether you’re home or away. Smart light globes can help to fool would-be intruders, as they can be set to switch on and off to mimic your daily patterns, even when you’re not there.
The eyes have it
“Cameras are only effective [in crime prevention] when they are monitored and are often used retrospectively to report a crime,” says Kristy Cianci. This is why app-controlled smart cams can be such good preventive measures; some models can send a push notification to your smartphone when they detect movement. 44 bunnings.co.nz |

For the highest resolution around the exterior of your home, choose a 4K security camera. If you need surveillance in a large area that requires very bright light, opt for a unit with an onboard floodlight. And to ensure footage is safely kept, you can subscribe to a cloud storage service. Arlo Secure, for example, costs from $4.99 per month for a single camera, or $14.99 per month for unlimited cameras. As Brad Little from Arlo explains, “Arlo Secure plans provide smart, AI-powered video cloud storage that’s designed to deliver a seamless home security experience with interactive alerts on activity such as motion and sound, object detection and more. This offers additional protection against theft of locally stored footage because videos are stored in a secure, private cloud for 30 days.” Another option

GARDEN ADVICE
SUMMER FESTIVAL
WARM WEATHER MEANS ANYONE CAN NURTURE BEAUTIFUL BLOOMS, DELICIOUS PRODUCE AND A LUSH LAWN Words JANE WRIGGLESWORTH
T
his season is an exciting time in the garden with vegetables, fruit and herbs growing in abundance and flowers blooming. With three to four months of warm weather in store, now’s the time to grow plants that thrive in heat. Try our tips to get the most from your summer garden.
Deadhead diligently
Photography Gap Photos/Heather Edwards, garden design Philippa Pearson. Some photographs feature products from suppliers other than Bunnings.
The key to a long-lasting display of flowers is to deadhead regularly. Andrew Grant of Enrich with Nature recommends that as plants fade out of bloom, pinch or cut off the flower stem below the spent flower and just above the first set of full, healthy leaves. “Repeat with all the dead flowers to encourage more flowers to develop and prolong the plant’s flowering season,” he says.
Water regularly
The warmer weather means plants need regular watering to prevent wilting and even dying. Tomatoes, for example, love to be watered, says Andrew. “And if you are growing them in a pot, water well so they don’t dry out,” he warns. “The more you water your tomatoes, the juicier your fruit is going to be. Water at the base, not the leaves, to avoid mildew.” Keep an eye on your edible goodies – tomatoes love a good feed, too. Andrew recommends giving them a good boost with some fertiliser every couple of weeks as you water them.
Plan your planting so that taller plants grow to shield shorter or more delicate ones from hot sun and drying winds
Prevent heat stress
When temperatures rise above 30°C for prolonged periods, plants will stop growing and show signs of stress. Leaves may wilt, roll or brown, and flowers and fruit could drop off and blister or discolour. Water regularly and deeply to keep temperatures down, mulch to retain moisture in the soil and provide shade cloth if necessary. If growing leafy greens, such as lettuces, provide afternoon shade, otherwise they’ll produce bitter leaves and quickly go to seed.
Most plants grow best in temperatures ranging from 15-29°C. Learn the signs of heat stress in plants and act promptly

PRODUCE TO PLANT
For an abundance of tasty tomatoes, plant varieties that set small fruit on trusses
Provide a slow feed
Early summer is a great time to give plants a boost to help them cope with rapid growth over the warmer months. Robbie Yortt of Grosafe recommends a slow-release, seaweed fertiliser. “This is high in organic matter and great for overworked and tired soils,” she says. “Plants will also have the added bonus of being stronger and more resistant to pest damage during dryer periods.” Slow-release fertilisers work for four to six months.
Nourish the roots
If your flowers, crops and even lawns fail to thrive, try giving their roots a boost with a mycorrhiza-enhancing
product. “These liquid fertilisers feed beneficial soil microbes and mycorrhiza fungi that activate root function and revitalise and improve soil activity,” explains Robbie. “That leads to better uptake of nutrients and moisture, and better plant growth.” Look for an organic product that’s safe for all plants.
Keep on top of pests
Unwanted visitors such as scale, aphids and stink bugs start to multiply quickly in warmer weather, so be on the alert. “Pinch them off with your fingers or try certified organic products,” suggests Robbie. “Choose ones which can be used on both
It’s important to choose vegetables to suit your garden space. For patios and small areas, large containers can accommodate smaller cherry-type tomatoes, dwarf beans, eggplants, capsicums and chillies. Look for compact varieties that produce prolific crops. Specially bred babysized pumpkins and melons grow well in large containers, too. However, climbing beans, courgettes, cucumbers, and large-size pumpkins and melons are more suited to planting in the ground to ensure better production of vegetables and fruit.
“Specially developed extra small tomato plants produce intense flavoured cherry-sized fruit, ideal in salads, lunch boxes or as a healthy snack” Andrew Grant

Keep on top of your grass with these expert tips
1
Master moisture
Neglect or bad weather can leave a lawn looking and feeling less than lovely. For an area that seems pretty dry and dead but still shows some green, try watering it well – grass is resilient and may recover. If water runs off, improve moisture penetration with a soil wetter. Compacted soil can also prevent water and nutrients reaching grass roots – use a garden fork, spiked roller or lawn sandals to aerate it.
Fill in bare patches
Barren spots of lawn can be replaced by sowing seed or laying turf. Yates lawn specialist Steve Jackson says seed is economical and suits both large areas or repairing small patches. “But it can take months for the grass to establish, and you need to stay on top of weeds,” he warns. Turf is an instant but more expensive option – plus you’ll need to clear out weeds, stones and other debris, and improve the soil, Steve says.
3
During the growing season, monitor your lawn for potential problems, so you can nip them in the bud before they progress
4
Feed and flourish
During summer, apply a granular, lawn-specific fertiliser, and a liquid fertiliser in periods of active growth. Mow regularly, but trim only one-third of the grass blade length. “Removing too much of the leaf blade stresses the lawn,” Steve explains. For deep root growth, water less frequently, but for longer. Check with your local council for watering restrictions that may apply in your local area.

Banish intruders
Dig out weeds as you spot them or use a product suitable for the type of weed and your variety of grass. Irregular patches of dead grass could mean common lawn pests, such as sod webworm, grass grubs and armyworm, are active – treat with lawn-specific insecticide.

Curate pantry contents
Magic up more space ABOVE A versatile seating/standing area is the perfect place to perch during parties!
Look at where your existing kitchen might not be meeting its potential. Lisa Mayski of Kaboodle Kitchen suggests retrofitting handy devices to create additional storage and, if space permits, adding to the benchtop. “Extend an island to create an area dedicated to grazing and serving food,” she says. “When you’re finished entertaining, it can act as a second dining space or food prep area.” To temporarily tweak a kitchen into an entertainer’s space, annex territory from other rooms. Move plastic ware or small appliances from a cupboard to the garage or linen cupboard to make way for trays and platters. Use the laundry as a storage spot or dumping ground for dirty dishes – a large sink helps when cleaning up!
Sort food storage
Run down your stocks of food in the weeks prior to an event to create extra storage space. Use up, consolidate and tidy pantry items to buy you extra clearance – and take the opportunity to make sure your pantry hardware is working hard enough. “Pull-out wireware is a great way to add an extra layer of organisation to your pantry,” says Lisa. Adding a few shelf stackers helps to utilise unused cupboard 54 bunnings.co.nz |

height. Finding more room in the fridge is trickier, so call a good old chilly bin into service. Blocks of ice will last longer than cubes – DIY blocks in old ice-cream containers ahead of time. Store food in containers or on racks, so they don’t get soggy from melting ice.
Audit all servingware
Take out all your platters and serving bowls, give them a good wash, and decide if you need to upgrade or increase your inventory. Do the same with crockery, glassware and cutlery. Bin chipped and broken pieces and make sure there’s enough for everyone. Don’t stress if they’re not matching – mixing eclectic pieces from different sets in varied sizes but in a consistent colour palette can look great!

Kit Out timber picnic tray table kit, $15, I/N: 0212277
To maximise space on a busy benchtop, assemble a timber picnic tray table according to instructions, then corral lightweight glasses and cutlery in a stylish container or jar on the top and stack napkins and plates underneath (at 610mm long, this piece, pictured left, allows for two plate stacks). Afterwards, fold up the legs and pack it away, ready for your next gathering! Tip: This versatile piece can also be used as a shelfstacker to help fill unused areas on higher shelves. However, you don’t want foot traffic around the stove. “Set up a self-service food and drinks area. Preferably this would be located on a kitchen island or within close proximity to the kitchen, but not directly inside it,” says Lisa.
Ease the cooking pressure
A successful gathering is one where the host enjoys themselves too, so steer clear of overly complicated dishes. “Keep your recipes simple!” advises Silvia. And use the barbecue – firing up the grill tends to draw a crowd and inspire offers of assistance!
Move it outside
Take advantage of warm weather and long evenings and have the shindig outdoors! You can still create a semi-formal atmosphere, even with folding chairs at trestle tables. Style editor Tilly Roberts suggests using pretty fabric, tablecloths or even new drop sheets to cover the table. “Set the mood with fairy lights or candles – citronella ones help keep mosquitoes away, too!” Never leave lit candles unattended, especially if children and pets are around.
Invite guests in
Don’t exclude the chef and host – when guests first arrive, bring the party to you! “If your kitchen is open plan, gather everyone around to keep the chef company,” says Tilly. “Set up stools, and face lounge or dining furniture towards the kitchen.” Use visual cues to mark the kitchen as ‘open to the public’. Silvia Colloca, author of The Italian Home Cook, says, “Light a candle, pick flowers and display fresh produce like tomatoes, apples and lemons on platters, to create an enticing space.” Serve snacks or pre-dinner drinks on the island bench.

According to the PPG Paints trend report for 2022-2024, we’re set to see “a celebration of bright, bold colours at a time when their positive
influence is needed most”. The Chromatic Joy palette of playful hues, which suggests optimism and positivity, is key to reflecting this. Rachel Lacy, colour category manager at PPG Paints, explains, “The pared back, bright white spaces of minimalist design make way for comforting and joyful colour. Riot of Sunlight, Glowing Bars, Beautiful and Bright, Torc of Gold, Early Leaf and Everything Is Going To Be Alright are all perfect choices for bursts of colour.” Mood-lifting hues also emerge in Dulux’s 2023 Revive palette, including rose pink, breezy blue, sunshine yellow, emerald green, violet and burnt orange. Described as “retro futuristic”, they make a statement – so are ideal for accent walls. bunnings |

Choosing your shade
If you’re not confident with embracing colour, choosing it can be hard. “Look at the area you want to paint and explore how you and your family use and enjoy the space,” says Rachel Lacy. She suggests seeking inspiration online. Davina says people are usually drawn to images showing light and airy spaces or, conversely, darker, cosy spaces and colours that draw you in. “Then you have to take the functional use of the space into consideration,” she says. “You would probably want a working room (such as a kitchen or laundry) to be light and bright to enhance the work and time spent in this
Dulux Pataua Beach from the Connect palette lends these bedroom walls a warm glow
area. Whereas in a bedroom or living room you may want to feel secure and cocooned, hence a darker colour may be perfect for these spaces.” What if you love colour but are not sure how to use it? Begin in a bedroom, says Davina. “This personal space is not an area your guests walk through, so you can completely colour without barriers or external critique,” she says. Start with a wall behind your bedhead as the focal point.

Light matters
This will have a big impact on colour, so study how light works throughout the day. Use a test pot to paint a large card to move around. But don’t line tester colour cards up beside each other as this will influence their appearance. “You also need to view colour at different times of the day with natural lighting, to see it in full sun and shadows or even in diffused light, as well as under artificial lighting at night, which can make a huge impact,” says Davina.
“There are some wonderful uplifting, brighter colours coming through that are inspired by fashion and technology – they just shine happiness” Davina Harper, Dulux

Melanie Stephenson of Porter’s Paints reveals the brand’s oceanic hues of calming blues and greens are trending. “Colours of the ocean, from palest greens to saturated jewel tones, not only deliver serenity and calm, but also a sense of optimism and restoration,” she says. Marine blues, gentle greens and accents of deep garnet are also reflected in the Dulux 2023 Balance palette. “Balance is very much inspired by a ‘less is more’ philosophy,” says Davina Harper. These colours are a great complement to luxe textures including velvet and silk. Earthy tones of sandstone, wasabi, moss, muddied yellow-green and charcoal also come through in the Dulux 2023 Connect palette, appealing to those who seek “calm, comfort and a simple approach to living,” says Davina.

But the good news is there’s a safe and easy way to cut short their visits and prevent more bugs moving in, thanks to the NO Bugs Super range from Kiwicare.
TREATMENT OPTIONS A spray with professional-strength NO Bugs Super Protective Barrier surface spray treatment around the outside entry points of your home, such as window and door frames, will keep most bugs away for up to six months. Ants are at their most active in summer but they won’t bother you after a NO Bugs Super treatment

EASY APPLICATION For best results when spraying NO Bugs Super, and to ensure even coverage, apply a fine spray to clean, dry surfaces. When using outdoors, choose a sunny, still day. After spritzing spider webs, wait two to three days before brushing away with a dry broom.
SAFE TO USE NO Bugs Super is stain- and odour-free and, once dry, perfectly safe for family and pets to touch, making it an ideal DIY bug-banishing solution. eiling fan, pedestal fan or airconditioner: what’s the best way to maintain a comfortable temperature indoors this summer? Whatever you’re shopping for, do your research first, especially as there will be ongoing running costs. Then make the right choice for your space – without it costing a fortune in energy bills.

IT PAYS TO INSULATE
Good roof and ceiling insulation can save up to 45 per cent* on heating and cooling costs, so it’s worth having quality ceiling batts installed. If you’re handy, some products can be a DIY project. Don’t forget windows: invest in blinds, curtains or both, then try to keep them all closed during the heat of the day to limit solar heat gain.
How do they work? Fans don’t
chill the air, they just move it around. Your body cools itself by perspiring, and fans enhance the effect by generating a breeze over your skin. Typically, running a fan is roughly equivalent in comfort to a temperature reduction of 3°C*. On average, fans use less energy than airconditioners, making them cheaper to run. They come in a range of styles to suit all decors, and need to be hardwired and installed by a licensed electrician. Selected Bunnings stores offer an installation service (ask at the Special Orders Desk)‡. Before selecting a model, size up your room. The team at Arlec advises that, as a guide, fans up to 1000mm diameter can be installed in small rooms up to 13sqm: “For medium-sized rooms up to 20sqm, consider installing a fan with 1000-1200mm diameter, while rooms larger than 20sqm suit fans with a 1200mm blade diameter or larger.” For a large, open-plan space, you may need more than one fan. Fans must be at least 2.1m from the ground, so a room with low ceilings won’t be suitable. Tall or raked ceilings?

You can use an extension rod to have a fan installed at the optimum level.
Ideal for: Any single room or space
that regularly needs cooling.
Top tip: Pick a fan with a summer/ winter switch. In cold weather, run it clockwise to push warmth from your heat source down into the room.
Airconditioners
How do they work? They bring
down the temperature of the actual air in a room. Window units, installed in either a window or, in some cases, through a wall, serve a single room. Split systems house the compressor outside, with the air outlet unit in the room. If you have a larger home and want to cool more than one room, consider a multi split system, which has a number of air outlets connected to a single compressor, or ducted airconditioning, which can cool the whole home – some models even allow you to operate different areas as needed. Reverse-cycle systems are year-round options – they can both cool down or warm up a room. It’s important to buy a system to suit the size of your space and check the energy rating for efficiency. Also, factor in ongoing maintenance costs, plus installation by a licensed technician. Some Bunnings stores offer an installation service (ask at the Special Orders Desk)‡.
Ideal for: Single rooms to entire homes. Top tip: Use both aircon and fans for more air movement – and to keep costs down.
Portable ners airconditio How do they work? Like fixed
units, portable aircons draw in warm air, cool it and vent via a hose through a window (check if a venting kit is included or sold separately). The operating process also means water condensation is collected, often in a tank that will need to be emptied

regularly. They’re generally cheaper to buy than fixed units, don’t incur installation costs, can be rolled from room to room as required and move house with you. Some need to be sited near a window and a power point, as extension cords aren’t recommended for use with these models. Portable aircons aren’t particularly energy-efficient; the usual, single-duct model doesn’t rate stars for a quick comparison on the energy rating label, so check the power consumption figures to work out how much your chosen unit could cost to run.

Portable fans
How do they work? Generating the same type of cooling as ceiling fans, portable fans are ideal for renters as you can take them with you when you move. Available in floorstanding and desk versions, they can be placed just about anywhere you need a breeze. Styles include traditional pedestal models, powerful tower types that don’t take up much space, and slick bladeless ones. On average, they’re cheaper than ceiling fans and, since they can usually be plugged into an existing socket, you shouldn’t have to factor in any installation costs. More powerful, oscillating models may use more energy than a ceiling fan, meaning they can end up costing slightly more to run. Bunnings electrical buyer Kirsten Smith says the size of the space is the most important issue when buying a portable fan. “Choose small personal fans for a study, 40cm pedestal fans for a lounge and large 75cm industrial fans for a garage or gym,” she explains. Ideal for: Rooms or spaces where you need a targeted cooling effect. Top tip: Some models can be controlled by remote or via a smart system app – great for those days when a sleep-in is in order.

B
udding interior designer and mumof-three Alyce, from NSW, Australia, found the power of knowledge invaluable for her first bathroom renovation. “I went into the project feeling very educated and informed on the topic - I did a lot of research, reading reviews and watching tutorials,” she says of her ensuite makeover. “This really built up my confidence – and I thought, if other people can do it, I can do it too!” Over the course of four weeks, and all in her spare time, Alyce completed the makeover, transforming her once plain, dark and tired ensuite into a light, contemporary and functional space. +

Essential prep
Alyce’s first step was to strip out everything that wasn’t fixed: towel rails, mirror, blind and artwork. She cleaned the walls and floors with sugar soap, patched holes with a moistureand mould-resistant filler and removed old silicone from around the shower frame and tiled area. Then she painted the walls, trims and door in Dulux St Clair Quarter, providing a neutral backdrop for the colour to come.
A vibrant splash
Adding wow factor was easy and economical with paint. “We have a very dark house and I’m going through it and adding a lot of natural textures and earthy tones,” Alyce explains. “I wanted to bring that into the ensuite as well and I definitely wanted to have a feature wall.” The earthy clay colour of Dulux Broadway now covers one wall. “I tested two colours – I felt comfortable with one, but went with the second option called Broadway, as it was a little bit out of my comfort zone,” she says. “I like to push my design style a tiny bit and find that generally pays off.” Alyce revived the vanity cabinet with Dulux Renovation Range in Howick Half, which works well with the feature wall, the white walls and the brass finishes. It also formed a perfect base for greenery and accessories to coordinate with the rest of the house, including bright towels, plants and pots, a bamboo mat and wall art, plus brass hooks and a framed mirror. 66 bunnings.co.nz |

Tile transformation
Rather than replace the grey wall tiles, Alyce chose to paint them a glossy white using Dulux’s Renovation Range in St Clair Quarter. She watched several Dulux website tutorials on how to use the products, so felt confident when putting paintbrush to tile. “I bought everything that was specified, so I knew I had all the right tools,” she says. “Everything’s held up beautifully. The tiles are perfect no matter how many times we shower. It’s got that lasting result.” Although the floor tiles were left unpainted, she spruced them up with two coats of a grout pen: “The results are incredible!” Light now bounces around the ensuite, creating a brighter and more spacious room. “I took it one step at a time and it really paid off,” says Alyce. “I’m so pleased with how it turned out – now I want to do the same to the kitchen!”

Update the entry
A fresh coat of paint on the front door or fence is a quick way to make an impact and offer a warm welcome – be inspired by the latest colour trends from page 57. Dulux colour and design specialist Davina Harper says, “Neutral shades like white, beige, greige and grey are eternally popular due to their easy versatility and clean and classic look. For the front door, a feature colour like Colombo Street is a bright, bold statement, whereas deeper hues in rust, burgundy, greens or blues will create a more reserved effect.” Enhance your refreshed look with a potted plant or two by the door.

String lighting is an easy way to create ambience. Peter Loftus of Lytworx says, “Tiny twinkling LED solar fairy lights can be used almost anywhere to highlight garden features or define an entertaining space.” Festoon lights also create an instant festive vibe. Peter suggests draping them from branches or scalloping them under a pergola roof to gently illuminate an outdoor area. “For extra wow factor, layer a combination of fairy and festoon lights,” he says. For a streamlined, ultra-modern look, strip lighting is a great option. With adhesive
It’s amazing what a little scrubbing can achieve inside. To freshen up the walls, arm yourself with a feather or microfibre duster, microfibre cloths, sugar soap and a microfibre mop. Run the duster across ceiling corners and cornices – a cobweb broom could help with resident spiders and their homes – then skirting boards. Next, tackle walls with a solution of sugar soap and water. Use the mop to clean the top half of walls, then a cloth or wipes for the lower half and fiddly areas around light switches.

Boost the barbecue
With extra people around, the barbecue is bound for a workout, so be sure it’s up to the task. Bunnings barbecue specialist Guy Davies suggests starting with an external scrub using hot soapy water, then giving the grill plates a thorough clean. Inspect the burners to ensure they’re not covered in grease and grime. “Clear out the grease tray and add fresh Samba [fat absorber],” says Guy. “For gas barbecues, check the regulator and hose for any splits or missing seals.”

Set an alfresco scene
Socialising and relaxing is so much better in a reinvigorated entertaining area. Give paths and patios a water blast and treat outdoor furniture to a wash and gentle scrub with detergent. Check the care label to see if you can pop outdoor cushion covers in the washing machine or, if they’re beyond salvation, try to get replacement covers. Adding a stylish outdoor rug and a scattering of new cushions will also give an instant lift.

Colour in the garden
Even a few plants can revitalise a lifeless corner. On a deck or a patio, Clare says to use as big a pot as you have space for. “Palms and strelitzias work well in large pots to create a tropical vibe, and dwarf bougainvillea will give a lovely display of colour,” she says. For fragrance, she suggests pots of small perfumed shrubs such as boronia, pendulous camellia, lavender and geranium. A trio of pots in different sizes with a mix of contrasting plants also looks great. In a tight space, use hanging plants as a cascading verdant backdrop, such as trailing devil’s ivy, rhipsalis or hoya.
Pretty up planters and beds with seasonal colour. Bunnings Greenlife buyer Clare Taylor says, “Perennials such as bougainvillea, hibiscus and crepe myrtle look great in garden beds, while dahlias, petunias, begonias and marigolds are great for pots in a sunny spot. In shadier areas you might like to try impatiens, native violets, hardy outdoor ferns and perennials like gardenia, lavender, federation daisies and fuchsias.” Stay on top of watering to keep it all looking its best.

THE POWER SEVEN THESE MUST-HAVE WORKSHOP WONDERS WILL SHIFT YOUR DIY INTO HIGH GEAR Words GUN ARVIDSSEN

D
iscover how simple and fun it can be to assemble furniture, perform basic home maintenance or put together carpentry projects when you harness the power of these seven essential DIY tools. You won’t just be avoiding blisters from sawing piles of timber by hand or hacking away at old grout – these workshop helpers will give you the ability to tackle more ambitious tasks than ever before.
1 Cordless drill
Invaluable for both creating holes and driving screws, a cordless drill is a tool you’ll wonder how you lived without. Andrew Murray at Ozito says, “A two-speed gearbox allows more control, as the first gear gives you a slower RPM [revolutions per minute] and delivers more torque [rotational force] as you drive screws. The second gear has higher RPM, allowing you to drill holes in harder materials such as steel.” Why you need it: Using a hex bit, it helps you put flatpack furniture together at lightning speed!

2 Jigsaw
Compact and versatile, a jigsaw can swiftly cut through timber, plywood, melamine and other materials. Its narrow blade tackles curves and complicated shapes, but it’s great for straight lines, too. A base plate can also be tilted to make bevelled cuts. Pendulum action, a feature of many jigsaws, makes the end of the blade tip back and forth as well as going up and down, resulting in a more aggressive cutting action. However, for the neatest cuts – or when working with brittle materials such as acrylic – it’s best to keep pendulum action off. Why you need it: Amazing at cutting curves in sheet materials.

7 3 Angle grinder
This is an unsung hero when it comes to DIY tasks around the home. While it’s well known for cutting and grinding metal and masonry – for example, when you need to trim a steel bracket for an awkward custom fit – its high revs make it brilliant for a variety of other applications. With a stripping disc attached, it can remove moss or paint, while a diamond multi blade is suitable for everything from masonry, stainless steel and reinforced concrete to timber with nails in it. For safety, always disconnect the power plug or remove the battery before changing the wheel on an angle grinder. Why you need it: Slices through metal like butter.

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
Keep in mind… When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for set-up and use. n If using a drill or circular saw to cut timber, work in a well-ventilated area. n

4 Multifunction tool
It can cut through timber, plastic and metal, saw out grout from between tiles, flush-cut the ends off dowels and make short work of detail sanding into the tiniest of spaces. Usually sold with a basic array of blades and attachments, a multifunction tool’s magic lies in the high-speed side-toside motion of its accessory head. The easily interchangeable attachments can be mounted at various angles, increasing the tool’s adaptability and allowing you to work in confined areas. Why you need it: Breezes through seemingly impossible plunge cuts.
5 Rotary tool
Boasting a maximum speed of up to 35,000RPM, this tool is compatible with miniature attachments such as grinding wheels, engraving bits and sanding drums for high-precision DIY work. If you’re performing detailed tasks such as creating an intricate model, sharpening knives or engraving the kids’ sports gear, the first thing you’ll reach for will be your rotary tool. A cordless version is extra convenient for in-situ work, such as sanding down the edge of a sticking door without removing its hinges. Use a mini brush wheel for cleaning rust from hand tools and other objects with notches and crevices that are tricky to navigate. Why you need it: Restores lawnmower blades to razor-sharp.
6 Sander
The type of power sander you choose will depend on what you’re most likely to use it for. If you often do small-scale work with lots of corners and crevices, a palm sander with a triangle shaped pad will be your best option. For larger surfaces, such as sanding doors or furniture prior to painting, a random orbital sander will be your go-to ally. The sanding disc won’t get into tight corners, but you don’t need to double up on sanders – most multifunction tools (see 4) come with triangular pads for detail sanding. Why you need it: The ultimate lifesaver for upcycling and paint prep.

7 Circular saw
This high-torque must-have tackles long, repeated cuts in materials from thick timber to plywood and metal – with the right blade. The base plate can be tilted for bevelled cuts, and raised or lowered for exact cut depths. When the cutting edge starts getting dull and sawing more slowly, upgrade the performance of your saw by choosing a high-quality replacement blade. Justin Goode at Irwin says, “More teeth on the blade will give you a finer finish, while less teeth cut more quickly and result in a rougher finish.” Why you need it: Effortlessly powers through long, straight cuts, even in thick pieces of timber.
6 1 Flexovit 115mm multi material segmented diamond blade, $39.99, I/N: 6370869. 2 Full Boar 40 piece impact torsion bit set, $39.98, I/N: 0170513. 3 Irwin ‘Marathon’ 184mm 40T circular saw blade, $36.99, I/N: 0172623. 4 Craftright 5 piece multi function tool accessory kit, $19.95, I/N: 6370711. 5 Ryobi ‘ONE+’ 18V random orbital sander, $139/ skin only (battery and charger sold separately), I/N: 6210660. 6 Ozito 145 piece rotary tool accessory kit, $17.98, I/N: 0380451. Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered.
BATTERY OR MAINS POWERED?
In most cases, Andrew Murray recommends going cordless as a starting point when buying power tools. “It takes away some of the safety factors surrounding 240V electricity and the occasional issues of having a cord trailing behind you,” he says. “Once you have a battery and charger pack, there’s a whole range of bare tools (sold as ‘skin only’) that you can use with the same battery platform.” There is one exception, though. “There are some benefits to using a mains-powered jigsaw, as there’s often more torque and strokes per minute (SPM) delivered from the motor,” Andrew explains.

1 Mark up a 1800mm x 300mm timber panel 395mm in from either end to cut the side pieces with a mitre saw. Cut a 410mm piece as the top. Cut a 25mm dowel piece to 375mm long. Tip: Alternatively, arrange to have the pieces cut in store.
2 Mark the sides 150mm in from the edges and up from the base to drill with a countersinking bit. Install 40mm screws to protrude by 3mm. Pre-drill into dowel endgrain with a 3mm bit, apply adhesive, position it between the sides, with the screws in the holes, and secure.
3 On the top piece, use a combination square to mark a line 9mm in from the ends to countersink holes 30mm from the edges and at the centre. Position the top flush with the sides to pre-drill the upper edges of the sides with a 3mm bit. Tip: Mark the top so it repositions over the same holes.
4 Apply adhesive to the upper edges of the sides, then secure the top through the centre holes with 40mm screws. Use a combination square to check the sides are straight, then hold with 450mm clamps, securing the remaining screws. Wipe away excess adhesive with a damp cloth and leave to dry.
5 Sand over the screws with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove any breakout from the countersinking. Use a scraper to smooth filler into the holes and leave to dry. Tip: Choose a tinted filler to match the timber.
6 Sand all over with 180-grit abrasive paper to remove excess filler and round over the cuts to match the factory edges. Wipe away dust with a damp cloth. Apply two coats of furniture oil with a cloth, leaving to dry thoroughly after each coat.
Keep in mind… Work in a well-ventilated area and wear a mask when using cutting tools and sanding. n When using power tools, always wear the recommended safety gear. n If stacking two or more pieces, anchor securely using fixings suitable for your wall type. n
PLANTS
HARDY FLOWERS
Petal power Add vibrant colour to gardens with robust summer blooms
African daisy
The showy daisy-like flowers of this low-growing shrub are available in pink, purple, yellow, orange or cream hues, with contrasting deep purple or yellow centres. The petals may be flat and narrow or resemble fluted spoons. Some forms can spread, so plant in pots or edged garden beds. Deadhead regularly.
Verbena
Brilliant white, pink, red, purple or blue clusters of flowers appear throughout the warmer months. Position in full sun or part shade and add plenty of organic matter. Ideal for growing as a ground cover, a border plant or in pots or contained beds.
African daisy
(Osteospermum ecklonis cvs)
Verbena
(Verbena spp. and hybrids)
Tolerates hot, dry conditions once established and prefers a spot in full sun with well-drained soil.
A hardy annual with brightly coloured flowers that will attract butterflies and beneficial insects.
Dianthus
Impatiens
Dianthus
Also known as Sweet William, these traditional plants dazzle in the garden and when cut for the vase. The white, pink, lavender or bright red flowers are scented, and look similar to carnations. A hardy annual or short-lived perennial, they grow well in pots and borders.
Traditional impatiens (busy lizzie) love shade, while New Guinea impatiens prefer semi-shaded positions. For sunny areas, try SunPatiens. They have single or semi-double rose-like blooms in pink, purple, red, coral or white. Enrich the soil with organic matter and compost.
(Dianthus barbatus)
Plant in sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Deadhead regularly to prolong flowering.
