Now is a great time to start a vegie patch. To boost the success of your crops, improve the soil before you plant with plenty of organic matter, like compost, aged manures or blood and bone. In most climates, sow beans, basil, chillies, cucumbers, eggplants, pumpkin, sweet corn and zucchinis. If you live in a cool region, wait until the soil is warmer before planting.

COS Also called romaine, this lettuce forms a tight head of sturdy, long and crisp leaves. Pick outer leaves while the head grows.

OAK LEAF A loose-leaf variety made up of heavily lobed leaves, like an oak leaf. Harvest the outer leaves often. If using products to deal with pests, diseases or weeds, or when handling compost or manure, follow any instructions carefully and wear gloves and suitable protective equipment. Much loved for its mild butterflavoured leaves and smooth, velvety texture. Great as wraps or in sandwiches.

ICEBERG Ever popular, its round head has layers of crisp, mildly flavoured leaves with good crunch factor. Harvest the whole lettuce.

Get a head start on the planting season by using seedlings. They’re easy to grow and, as young established plants, have a greater chance of success in the garden. But if you’re not in a rush, seeds are great, too.

Weeds compete with plants for valuable water and nutrients. Pull them out by hand or spray with an weedkiller.organic To support tall or climbing plants like cherry tomatoes and beans, make a teepee trellis with bamboo stakes. Tie string along it at intervals for extra support. Keep your household in greens by growing your own lettuce. Try our top picks (below).

2 Paint directly on to your vessel using random criss-cross or dabbing brush strokes to give a natural, rustic finish. Leave to dry and apply a second coat of paint.

Transform dated vases and vessels to achieve a gorgeous matt ceramic look. Vases you like the shape of, but not the colour or pattern, are perfect and even glass can be painted, allowing you to add water for living flowers and foliage.

n Painted vessels are not food-safe. Keep in mind...

TRASH TREASURETO

Roundup For Lawns is the new, ready-to-use spot spray that tackles lawn weeds with visible results in just seven days.

It’s beingeasygreen!

Get your lawn ready for endless hours of fun with these super-simple weekend tasks weeding by hand may spread dormant seeds or leave part of the root in the ground, causing more weeds to grow, while traditional lawn weed killers need to be applied to the whole lawn, taking up even more time!

Some products are not available at all Bunnings stores, but may be ordered. Store products out of reach of children and pets. Always read the label, including application restraints and instructions and follow safety directions.

TASK 1: LAWN MOWERS AT THE READY! Spring weekends are famous for the hum of mowers throughout the street and the smell of fresh cut grass. To get the best results, follow the one-third rule: the idea is to try not to cut off more than one-third of the grass each time you mow. A taller, thicker lawn helps to smother out pesky weeds and mowing on a higher setting also encourages deeper roots, which are more able to cope with stressful weather conditions.

All Purpose Slow Release Fertiliser, and get those steps up! Feeding your lawn is super easy and with Scotts Lawn Builder All Purpose, you’ll have a healthy green lawn all season long.

TASK 4: ENJOY!

In just a couple of hours, you’ve got a healthy dose of vitamin D, spent some time outdoors, worked up a few thousand steps and oh, made your lawn ready for endless hours of spring and summer fun. It’s time to put your feet up and admire a great day’s work!

The key to the lawn of your dreams (and becoming the envy of your neighbours) is a healthy dose of fertiliser. Scotts Lawn Builder provides your lawn with all the essential nutrients it needs for strong and healthy growth, all season long. Simply grab your Scotts Hand Held Fertiliser Spreader and a bag of Scotts Lawn Builder

TASK 2: THE NEED TO WEED

TASK 3: THICKER…GREENER...HEALTHIER…

Weeds are any lawn lover’s worst nightmare. Controlling weeds is always the trickiest part of lawn care –

Trevor also used this project to expand his DIY skill set, using old-school techniques to create a screwless base and top: “I learnt all kinds of traditional woodworking joinery techniques –bridle joints, mortice and tenon, drawbore joints, dowel pinning, sliding dovetail – and how to apply finish,” he says.

Jemma, NSW “Like something out of a high-end magazine!” was the Workshop team’s first reaction on seeing Jemma’s handiwork. This creative paint job turned an uninspiring space into a highlight of the home. Jemma explains, “Our dining room has no windows and has always been dreary. I wanted to make it an interesting space we’d be happy to use every day and entertain in.” She committed to the moody scheme by painting the adjacent wall in Dulux Domino. Using leftover sample pots, Jemma started the feature wall with a navy base. “Then I applied three colours [grey, white and black] in small sections, wetting with a spray bottle and blending with sponges as I went,” she explains. More ‘cloud’ layers were added until Jemma was happy with the result. “The cloud wall is beautiful to look at down the hallway, both in natural light and when the light is on in the evening,” she says.

In tackling a makeover of the kitchen in her parents’ century-old, newly bought Queenslander, seasoned renovators Claire and Derek needed to create more functionality while staying within budget and maintaining the home’s character. The alcove housing the retro-style stove stayed, but the “light green laminate counters and tatty cabinets” needed to go, says Claire. Then they knocked through a wall to the dining space, part of which was enclosed to create a walk-in pantry.

Keen to get the project done within budget and constrained by trade shortages, they did as much as they could, laying vinyl floor tiles, assembling the Kaboodle cabinetry, painting the raw board doors in Dulux Lexicon Quarter, and fitting the sink into a Kaboodle laminate benchtop in Frosted Oak. “We were keen to give tiling a go, so watched ‘how to’ videos on the Bunnings website,” says Lauren. “It was a slow process, being our first time tiling, but we were meticulous and feel like we did a great job!”

A neat gravel path, flanked by borders of edible plants, not only defines the entrance but offers a journey of discovery have a rambling block or a pathssuburbancompactspace, canplayan integral role in garden design. As landscape designer Les Edwards of ED Landscapes (edlandscapes.com) explains, only do they improve access, garden paths are a great way to create zones and introduce materials and shapes that draw the eye and take you on a journey,” he says. From practical to pretty, here are four path styles and destinations to inspire exploration in your garden.

your

Scale is also key. Consider the size of the block, house and street frontage to determine a proportional path width. “For entry pathways we tend to use a minimum of 1200mm and scale it up to 1600mm on larger blocks,” explains Les. When it comes to selecting suitable materials, landscaper Luke Cole of LC Landscape Construction (lclandscapeandconstruction.com.au) recommends drawing style cues from your home and garden.

“Light red and sandstock bricks contrast well against vibrant green foliage,” says Luke. “Other hard-wearing options include travertine, concrete, sandstone and crazy paving.” For a softer look, consider paving steppers or timber sleepers interspersed with pebbles or mondo grass. Have fun with border plantings and let your creativity run wild with a mix of plant varieties that suit the conditions and your desired look. “Generous plantings with multiple layers can work well,” suggests Les. For a combination of texture and colour with a semi-formal feel, try buxus balls, Stachys Byzantina ‘Big Ears’ and Liriope Muscari ‘Big Blue’, he adds. Create an appealing entrance with low-growing, compact shrubs that soften the edges around sleek pavers $29/pack 0111220.

The pathway home Nothing signifies a sense of arrival like a beautiful path to the front door. “A great way to create impact is with an arbour or a wide entrance framed by focal trees, which tapers to a narrower path,” suggests Les Edwards. “A curved path, off centre to the front door, evokes a more relaxed look and feel, while a straight-line path lends itself to more traditional homes and smaller gardens.”

The perfect pathway is all in the details ON THE EDGE Edging is a great idea, particularly to help contain gravel or rock paths. There are myriad options, from treated pine to plastic and rustic weathering steel. If you have some DIY expertise, brick or stone edging on a mortar bed is another option.

STEP UP If you have a sloping block, consider stairs. “The gradient of the block will influence the length of the stair flight, the inclusion of landings and the ratio of the treads and risers [depth and height of each stair],” says Luke. The dimensions need to adhere to the Building Code of Australian Standards.

TOP TRICKS & TIPS

LIGHT THE WAY Path lighting enhances safety and creates ambience. Try sensor lights for entry ways, bollard lights along paths or lights nestled in bordering beds. For a DIY option, try Holman LED path lights that can be controlled via a smartphone.

Lighting among the foliage provides a charming effect – and an invitation to explore The road most travelled The most-traversed paths are usually those practical routes – often running along the side of the house –that lead to utility areas such as the clothesline, shed and bins. “Here the path width should be determined by access requirements, so allow enough room to comfortably manoeuvre bins, a wheelbarrow, mower and anything else you need a thoroughfare for,” says Les. In these high-traffic zones, concrete paths in a coloured or aggregate finish are ideal, as they’re robust, lowmaintenance and smooth under the wheels of a laundry trolley or wheelbarrow. A pressure clean from time to time will banish mould or debris. If space is tight, keep border plantings minimal. “If you want to screen a shed or fence, consider plants like evergreen varieties of viburnum and lilly pilly, which can be hedged, or try a climber on the fence like star jasmine,” suggests Les.

A track to lead the way Have a fire pit out the back, a poolside pavilion or a sunny alfresco spot? Consider making ‘directional’ routes that link zones and lead visitors to entertaining areas.

Photography

“Creating a path with the same or similar materials used within entertaining areas creates a sense of continuity,” says Luke, who suggests teaming large pieces of flagstone with crazy paving to aid in orientation. 

“Small pebbles make an excellent filler between pavers but, if you’re concerned about weeds, pavers set in a solid concrete base may be preferable,” Luke adds. As this style of path should be clearly visible, pair it with a neat border of layered ground covers such as native violets and creeping thyme.

Les Edwards suggests establishing a destination where you can create a focal point, and punctuating the journey with various highlights. “This could be a water feature, focal tree, garden seat, decorative ornaments like an urn, or a seasonal display of colour,” he explains. The point here is the journey, not the destination, so the path should meander. “Curved paths feel more exploratory when you can’t see the end point,” he says. Crushed granite creates a natural look and pairs beautifully with soft border plantings such as Agapanthus ‘Snowball’ or Trachelospermum ‘Tricolour’. For a firm foundation that helps keep weeds at bay, Les recommends excavating to allow a minimum of 75mm of compacted recycled road base, topped with a 30-60mm layer of gravel.

SIMPLE AND SUSTAINABLE

Just as we need a strong foundation for a solid home, our plants need the right potting mix to maintain happy and healthy growth. Different plants have different growing needs – from acid-loving roses, gardenias, camellias and azaleas to phosphorus-sensitive Australian native plants, like the ever-trendy kangaroo paw – so be sure to find a potting mix that’s right for your plants.

Remove any damaged, dried or twisted roots as this will help the plant settle and grow better in its new pot. If you are trimming the roots, it’s important to wipe the blade with rubbing alcohol between each cut to avoid spreading any diseases or unwanted bacteria.

PLANTING PERFECTLY Once you’ve found the ideal plant and the right pot, it’s time to bring it all together.

Create a thriving potted garden with Scotts Osmocote

STEP 1: Pick a pot that has good drainage and is slightly larger than the grower’s pot your plant is in. If the pot is too big, there’s a risk of excess potting mix remaining damp and leading to root rot. You can also combine different plants in the same pot to create stunning displays – just be sure they all like the same growing conditions.

STEP 2: To get started, put your hand over the top of the grower’s pot with your fingers spread around the base of the plant, then tip the pot upside down. Gently tap the base of the pot and the plant should come out. Once out, loosen the plant’s root ball and brush away any old potting mix, without overly disturbing the roots.

T here’s something magic about finding the perfect plant, picking the right pot and bringing it home to meet the rest of your plant family. It could be the idea of beautiful blooms or tasty fruit, or the transformation that comes from potting up a gorgeous group of plants to green up your living spaces. It doesn’t matter whether you have a glowing green thumb or you’ve just started your growing journey – when you use all the right ingredients and add a little extra love, you’ll bring out the best in all you grow.

Position your plant so that it’s planted at the same height as it was in the grower’s pot, then gently pack the potting mix around your plant.

he vanity sets the style tone of a bathroom, but it’s also one of this area’s most practical pieces; its importance can’t be overstated. In all aspects, including size, shape and position, it pays to do your research before you have it plumbed in. Remember that one person’s perfect vanity is another’s not-quite-right, so consider the needs of your space and your household before you shop. Family matters If you’re running late, having to queue to brush your teeth, shave or apply make-up is hugely stressful. To ease the morning rush, select a wide (preferably double bowl) freestanding unit for your family bathroom. Jo Ingleton of Cibo suggests choosing one with maximum storage, and a mix of doors and drawers to help house everything from kids’ bubble bath to your teen’s hair products. 

Basin basics Above-counter basins (see opposite) provide additional visual interest in a bathroom, especially with the choice of colours available. They give bathrooms a chic, luxurious “spa feeling”, says Callum. While being stylish, an above-counter basin can be harder to clean, as you have to get behind the basin and around it. As it is set higher than other basins, make sure you choose tapware at the appropriate height. An inset basin is a better choice for high-use areas. “Because they are streamlined, there are fewer joins and tighter areas than exist with a basin on a benchtop, or even with an under-counter basin,” says Jo. “A regular-height mixer tap can be used, which means less water run off, splashing or pooling.”

LOCATION IS KEY Whatever vanity you decide on, make sure you’ve got it positioned correctly – there’s nothing worse than a shower door crashing into it daily, having zero room for cleaning around it, or bruising your hip every time you walk in or out of the bathroom. “It’s very dependent on the room layout, but a minimum of 300mm is needed for cleaning access and egress,” says Jo. Don’t forget to consider the area above the vanity too – is there space for a mirror, cabinets or lights to hang comfortably? Also investigate the plumbing requirements; leaving it in the same spot is the least expensive option, but if you’re switching from freestanding to wall-hung, you may need to reroute drains and plumbing.

Petite powder room

Gorgeous new finishes for basins include concrete, glass and natural stone, which make stunning aesthetic statements in the bathroom. But if practicality is top priority in your household, a vitreous china finish is the easiest to clean, as its surface allows toothpaste or make-up smudges to wipe off effortlessly.

Ensuite dreams

As with the family bathroom, it’s likely you and your partner may need the ensuite vanity at the same time. If space allows, opt for a double basin, but if this isn’t practical choose a single basin with space around it. It’s also important to maximise your storage so think carefully about your morning routine and how this applies to vanity use. Is there room for make-up, hair products, styling tools and toiletries?

By their very nature, powder rooms are small. The best solution is a mini vanity, explains Jo Ingleton. Stylish wall-mounted vanities give the appearance of space while still allowing for storage, so toilet rolls, spare soap and other bathroom products can be kept on hand.

The ensuite is usually a smaller space, so it’s particularly important to consider other bathroom ‘obstacles’ in its final placement. Bunnings bathroom buyer Callum Matheson says, “Think about the layout of the bathroom to make sure the drawers of the vanity do not interfere with the ensuite shower or walls.”

Freestanding vs wall-hung With their floating, contemporary look, wall-hung vanities are perennially popular and give an illusion of spaciousness in tighter rooms. Other benefits include the ability to hang them at a customised height, and having a space beneath leaves room for items (or storage baskets) to be tucked underneath. Ensure your wall is structurally sound enough to hold the vanity, and factor in the cost of hiding your plumbing. Classic freestanding vanities often offer greater storage with more drawers and cupboards. Because they stand directly on the floor they can appear bulky, but there’s no need to worry about hiding the plumbing in the wall. Plus, with no void underneath, there’s one less area to clean! to custom-make a unique wall-hung unit: com.au/DIY-bathroom-vanitybunnings.

*50,000 hour lifetime, based on 2.7 hours/day usage Imagine if a light bulb didn’t need changing for half a century – what a difference that would make for the environment, not to mention your budget! With a projected life span of 50,000 hours, the new Philips Ultra Efficient LED globes can keep working for as long as 50 years when used for almost three hours a day*.

SHINE ON Embrace sustainability and leave planned obsolescence in the dark, with revolutionary LED technology that lasts more than three times longer than ordinary LED bulbs. Besides offering huge reductions in material waste, Philips Ultra Efficient bulbs use up to 60% less electricity: the 485lm LED bulb draws just 2.3W, or about one-third of the power required by a standard Philips 6W bulb with a 470lm output.

It’s not just the environment and your wallet that will benefit from your choice of Philips Ultra Efficient lighting. Some LEDs can produce harsh, glaring light that may be unpleasantly intense; others can appear to flicker, which can be irritating or distracting. Philips Ultra Efficient globes use EyeComfort LEDs designed to minimise the causes of both glare and flicker, filling your home with light that is soothing and pleasant for your eyes.

Selecting your shade

The psychology of colour Interior design is both an art and a science: the way a room is put together can affect how you feel when you’re in it. Colour psychology examines how colour works on a subconscious level, influencing the way you feel; colour can even affect decision-making. There’s an element of subjectivity to colour psychology but, as a general rule, warm colours such as red, orange and yellow are stimulating, while cooler colours, like greens and blues, are calming.

While commercial offices take neutral styling to the extreme, a home office allows you to set up a space that reflects your personality and overall style – and can even help you focus on your work. Andrea Lucena-Orr, Dulux colour and communications manager, says your study should be a space of calm and concentration – and, more importantly, “somewhere you actually enjoy spending time.”

Consider what you need from the space and experiment by looking at pictures of colourful rooms and thinking about how they make you feel. “We all require different things from a study/home office, depending on the type of work we do,” explains Andrea. “You may want it to be a serene spot where you won’t get distracted, or an energising and uplifting one that inspires creativity.”

If you’ll be greeting clients in your home office or holding regular video meetings, you might want a colour with more gravity – a deep burgundy is associated with tradition and formality. Blue can evoke feelings of trust, stability and reliability, so a sophisticated navy might help to inspire all-round confidence. A freshly painted home office makes it much easier to start work every morning. Keep the styling simple and uncluttered and let the colour shine!

British RecklessPaintsGreen

Stylist Fiona (fionagould.com.au)Gould says a soft shade of green is the perfect backdrop for an office space that will help you to feel calm and centred. “It’s the colour equivalent of three deep breaths,” she says. Opt for blue-based, rather than “It’sais(left),calmingorgreensyellow-based,–deepemeraldturquoisearemorethanzestylime.ThegreenofthisroomDuluxCelerySatin,crispandfresh,butstilllittlemuddyandmuted.acolourthatrecedes into the background rather than shouting from the walls,” explains Fiona. When choosing a colour, look at what else will be in the room. A moodboard can help ensure all the finishes and key pieces sit together harmoniously before committing to a colour. “It can even help you find your wall colour – the beautiful green used on this wall is echoed in the artwork,” says Fiona. The natural theme continues with blond wood, a jute rug, rattan pendant and potted plants – and an added touch of brass in the floor lamp for glamour.

could help lift your spirits. These warm shades can also encourage creativity – handy if you work in a creative field and rely on blasts of brilliance.

Include living greenery in your home office to help improve air quality, reduce stress and increase your connection to nature

Not every home will have a whole room to use as an office, but an office nook can be just as effective and bursting with personality! Plenty of home office spaces are compact and tucked away in a corner, for instance, or under the stairs. The bonus appeal of a smaller area is that it’s easier to find the confidence to be bold – and faster to repaint if you’re not happy with the result. In this space (left and page 51), the rich mustard shade of Porter’s Paints Sundance has been used to create an arched office nook. “Curved shapes are everywhere right now, and a painted feature is a fantastic way to capture the trend,” explains Fiona. “Here, a wide arch shape defines the desk area, which is a clever visual trick if your office nook is part of a larger space, like the living room. And the colour is so invigorating, but also warm and welcoming.”

INNER PEACE TAKE YOUR

Words SHELLEY TUSTIN Storage issues in the kitchen are often not the result of lack of space, but poor design: oversized drawers, awkward corner cupboards and neverending deep shelves. This can be a particular problem in pantry cupboards, where lack of organisation can lead to food waste and shopping double-ups.

TRIUMPHORGANISATIONALACUPBOARDSKITCHENFROMJUMBLEDMESSTO

Knowing what’s already on your shelves is an easy way to cut your costs at the supermarket – and the satisfaction of a tidy pantry, in an impeccably organised kitchen, is priceless. From nifty internal fit-outs to smart shelving suggestions, find fixes for your pantry and kitchen cupboard challenges right here. A dedicated spot for tea, coffee and toast is practical – and easy to hide behind closed doors

Try to avoid deep shelves within the main pantry cupboard. “These are not functional pantry storage,” explains Monique Parker. “They are hard to access and make it easy to forget what you actually have on hand.”

Keep herbs and spices in handy drawers near the cooking area

Take cues from cooking

Make every bit count

Chelsea Smith of The Organising Platform (theorganisingplatform.com) suggests storing spices “in a narrow drawer close to the cooktop”.

Adjustable racks inside the pantry door are ideal for often-used products. Kaboodle Kitchen 450mm 6-tier pantry pullout baskets in Chrome, $455, I/N: 2667708 (five tiers used)

Consider, too, if oils and condiments might be better located in a narrow pull-out cupboard near the stove. Within the pantry, it is useful to position items according to how often you use them, says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. “Place frequently used items on the shelves that are at eye or chest level, as these are the most accessible shelves in the pantry,” she advises. “Items that aren’t used as frequently should be placed on either the top or bottom shelves, and the ones in between should house all your ‘extras’ – think rice, tuna, soup – things you don’t need every day but may need throughout the week.”

Think about replacing deep shelves with shallow ones at head height so ingredients won’t disappear. The unused air this creates can provide an opportunity to set up a coffee and “Plan meals (weekly or fortnightly) and shop with a detailed list of the items you need from the grocery store. This cuts down on food waste”

Chelsea Smith, The Organising Platform

Think about the bigger picture – for example, how you cook and what items are best kept readily at hand.

“Group pantry foods into like categories, then allocate places in the pantry based on frequency of use”

Keep it together Level things up even further with a few handy organisational products. In drawers, use non-slip liners to stop contents sliding around like pinballs.

A turntable is invaluable for corralling jars and bottles within a cupboard – give it a spin and you can access what you are after and monitor what needs using up or replacing.

1

LEFT Utilise every centimetre of tricky corner cupboard space with clever internal 2Kaboodleaccessories.Kitchentiercornerrotating baskets, $166.50, I/N: 2667709 or find it hard to access items on lower shelves, suggests Monique Parker.

“Ideally drawers are a great way to make best use of your space while still having everything visually and easily accessible,” says Chelsea Smith. This might mean rearranging your kitchen so some foodstuffs are stored in existing drawers. Internal wireware wizardry amps up the accessibility in other cupboards too, increasing storage space. “Corner cabinets are often underused due to their hard-to-reach location, so retrofitting some wireware will help increase functionality,” says Monique. “You can use corner or blind corner baskets for storing appliances, large bowls and containers, or you could even use the space to store all your baking trays and ingredients.”

Opt for spice racks or baskets, which can hang on the door, keeping small items visible and tapping into a whole new source of storage real estate. Another trick for tiny items is using shelf stackers or tiered shelves so anything at the back can be seen.

Match it up You’ve set yourself up for success – now take your skills to the next level. Matching containers look great in the pantry and decanting dry goods into them helps keep food fresher and ward against pantry moths and pests. Choose stackable tubs to maximise every centimetre. Label containers and, for bonus organisational points, Chelsea suggests noting the food’s expiry date on a little sticker, which you can put on the container’s base.

And remember, baskets and tubs are a great resource to keep packaged or loose items under control. Chelsea suggests, “Store like items grouped together and clearly labelled in a clear divided tub – this makes it easy to keep track of what you have and manage bulk packaging.”

“They can also help to categorise the contents of your pantry,” she says. Drawers are replacing cupboards as the go-to kitchen storage solution.

Indoor plants add colour, texture and depth to a room and offer a real focal point to a space. Even better, they can be taken with you when you leave. Danny Selzer, of Dans Plants wholesale nursery, says indoor plants have the power to transform a home. “Whether it’s a row of cacti on a windowsill or a towering kentia palm in the lounge, plants bring a room alive,” he says. “They also personalise your home, and say something about you – that you appreciate and care for a living thing.” Be mindful of porous plant containers and overflowing saucers to avoid water leaking and potentially damaging floorboards or carpets. Also make sure that climbers, such as hedera ivy, don’t get into walls, Danny warns. “That’s easy – just keep them trimmed and trained.”

UPDATE IT DECOR HACKS UPGRADING YOUR RENTAL CAN BE EASY WITH AFFORDABLE AND NON-PERMANENT FIXES

5Mirror, mirror… ‘Dark and dingy’ are words too often associated with rentals, but this can be eased with the clever use of mirrors. By enhancing light and giving the illusion of space, mirrors are transformative, affordable and removable. Go big with a statement mirror over a console or mantle, hang a gallery of mirrors as a design feature, or create a new ‘window’ by positioning a mirror to reflect a view.

Don’t underestimate the power of furniture to transform a home. Invest in beautiful statement pieces that bring a smile to your face – and that will stay with you when you leave. If space is at a premium, as it often is in rentals, select furniture with a double purpose: a sofa with a fold-out bed for guests, coffee tables and ottomans with storage, and entertainment consoles with drawers and cupboards.

Carpets can’t be ripped up and relegated to the bin in rental properties, but rugs can be easily layered over uninviting spaces.

Lightweight frames and removable adhesive hangers turn a blank space into a gallery wall

Interlocking vinyl planking is simple to install – and later remove – and can quickly cover tired timber or cracked tile floors. It comes in a great range of finishes and is affordable. Fun and fab for kids and playrooms, interlocking foam tiles are another inexpensive and quick flooring option.

6 Storage is king Many rentals aren’t blessed with great built-in storage, leading to unnecessary clutter. As well as multifunctional furniture, look to storage solutions like freestanding wardrobes and cube units, which are simple to assemble and remove at the end of the tenancy.

ABOVE Flexi Storage ‘Studio’ freestanding 3 shelf and hanging rail unit, $180, I/N: 0332533; 2 drawer and hanging rail unit, $209, I/N: 0332535; and 2 drawer and 4 shelf unit, $264, I/N: 0332536, all in Oak/Black

Art for art’s sake

Not only will hanging art make a space feel more personal, research shows it will also make you happier** – but you need to avoid damaging walls with unsightly nails and screw holes. For lighter items, like posters and smaller frames, Command strips (velcro-like strips) or adhesive picture hangers are your best friend. Leaning artworks on mantels, bookshelves and even the floor creates a delightfully bohemian look; secure to the wall with an adhesive hanger for safety. If you are lucky enough to have picture rail moulding, you can hang multiple pieces, nail free, with picture rail hooks and wire.

For a flooring fix that looks like timber, use glue-free vinyl planks

Keep in mind… Moderncharmretro

10 Small but mighty Tiny tweaks can make a big impact. Swap out the mouldy shower curtain for a fresh one. Replace the toilet seat. Brighten up an unsightly laminate bench with marble film. Purchase a moveable kitchen island to add workspace and a sturdy shelving unit for extra space for crockery and pantry supplies.

n For safety, standing storage should be anchored to a wall. If you are allowed to attach furniture to walls, choose fixings suitable for your walls (seek professional advice if unsure about the type of hardware). Before drilling, use a stud finder to check for wiring or pipework, and turn off the power before working. If unsure, call a professional.

n Regularly check fixings are secure.

Minor kitchen f it-out Kitchen hardware can be replaced in just hours, yet can totally transform a space with minimal cost and effort, says Monique Parker of Kaboodle Kitchen. The colours and materials used will make a big impact – matt black gives a modern, streamlined feel, while brushed brass can create a sense of luxury. “If you want the space to have a vintage vibe, handles sourced from secondhand or antique stores will help to add personality and charm,” she says. Always run it past the landlord first and consider the dimensions of your existing handles to ensure you’re replacing these with ones of the same size. “You don’t want to be drilling additional holes into the kitchen doors,” Monique adds.

Finishing touches Accessories can go a long way towards lifting the appearance of your home. Swap mismatched quilt covers and ragged towels for beautiful bedlinen and plush cotton towels to bolster the look of a bedroom or bathroom. Throws, cushions, carefully created vignettes and scented candles can help elevate an interior.

FINISHING TOUCHES

Tuscan Path’s range of on-trend screen panels is the style solution. Made from weathering steel, the decorative panels are hardy and durable, with designs that range from whimsical leafy patterns to intricate details. Not only will they provide additional privacy to your outdoor spaces, but they’ll also elevate your exterior style in an instant.

Dreaming of a luxe escape to nature? Capture the beauty of Mother Earth, and embrace the latest nature-inspired trends in your own outdoor space, with Tuscan Path’s affordable landscaping and garden decor.

TEXTURAL HEALING A soft and neutral pared-back palette is right on trend, beloved for its clean and calming aesthetic and the ability to let nature itself take the spotlight. However, without introducing some texture to your outdoor design, it can fall flat. Look to the landscape for inspiration – Tuscan Path’s porcelain pavers are a great way to inject texture. For pathways and garden bed edging, consider Tuscan Path’s decorative pebbles. Smooth, creamy tones and whites are a versatile addition, but for something more bold and refined, opt for a polished black pebble.

PALETTE PERFECTION Crisp whites, earthy tones and shades of sun-baked terracotta are the key colours to stepping up the style in your outdoor zone, while letting the greenery take centre stage. Choose your pavers, pots and accessories carefully to ensure a cohesive neutral palette across the entire space, but don’t be afraid to mix up the shapes and sizes. For example, a trio of Tuscan Path terracotta Otto cylinder pots, filled with lush green palms, is the perfect way to layer your foliage and create a rainforest-like aesthetic. Opt for pavers in sandy hues to inject some organic, earthy warmth into your design while maintaining the relaxed atmosphere.

As Tiger Nagel of Eden screening products explains: “Simply roll out and attach to your fence with staples, nylon ties or wires.” They can be customised to suit the space, too.

“Planting hedging plants really close together may result in a ‘quicker’ screen, but you will have issues later with dieback,” warns Andy. Alternatively, look for plants with a tight, bushy Timber slat screening, an ornate feature panel and sturdy posts work with a variety of plants to bring a sense of intimacy to this urban backyard

F resh air, sunshine and entertaining outdoors are among life’s greatest pleasures. But the ambience is easily spoiled when neighbours or passers-by can see directly into your space, intruding on your privacy. Thankfully, there are plenty of screening options to consider, allowing you to shield yourself from prying eyes without transforming your backyard into a fortress. Read on for inspiring ideas and expert tips to reclaim your sanctuary.

Seeing green Screening plants are a superb choice, as they deliver privacy with the softness of a living element. Andy Kepitis of Kep Horticulture (kephorticulture.com) says there’s a plant for every situation, but a little research is required to find the right one for you. “Your plant choice should take into consideration how much light the area receives, and how tall and wide the plant grows,” he says.

Fast-growing climbing plants, such as star jasmine and hardenbergia, are great to climb and scramble over trellises or arches, creating a dense, green barrier. Hedges are ideal, too, but avoid taking shortcuts to quick growth.

Roll up, roll out

Andy Kepitis, Kep Horticulture natural growth habit that can be planted together as an ‘informal hedge’. Clumping bamboo, grevilleas or escallonias are fast growers, but if you’re in a hurry, look for advanced specimens. If space is limited, a few strategically placed pots or planter boxes, with large plants like juniper or camellia, is a perfect solution.

“A well-thought-out screen can really go a long way in creating your own garden oasis”

A quick option – especially for balconies and fences that need extra height – is flexible screening. Usually fashioned from bamboo or woven materials, these are simple to install.

Panel for privacy Decorative screens or panels can add instant privacy to any part of the garden. They’re great for creating secluded pockets in your garden, especially around entertaining areas or quiet zones. Available in steel, aluminium, UV-stabilised recycled plastic or timber, they may be decoratively patterned with laser-cut motifs, coloured, or oxidised for an earthy, weathered look. Panels and screens can be used as standalone garden features or, recommends Andy, paired with plants to incorporate them into the area. “Using plants on either side and in front will create extra layers of interest in your garden space,” he says.

A solid steel or timber fence can completely block out wandering eyes, but check the boundaries as well as any other regulatory restrictions before building. This may include engaging a licensed surveyor to determine the exact lines of your property. If a solid fence is too bold or imposing, consider slatted options and plant in front to help increase privacy and soften the appearance.

“Cut the screen fence to size or join pieces together with staples or ties,” Tiger says.

If there is an existing fence, but the neighbours are on higher ground, try fence extenders. “These can be useful if you need to reduce sightlines from nearby homes,” says Andy. There are ready-made options that can easily be fixed with screws to the top of the existing fence. Always let your neighbours know of your plans before installation, as this impacts them too.

On the fence

Flexible screens aren’t freestanding though, so you’ll need to attach them to a support like a fence or pergola. “They’re a great solution for renters, allowing a cosmetic change while staying budget friendly,” says Andy. “Take the time to install it properly to ensure it stands the test of time.”

T he sun is shining, spring is here and it’s time to head outside to enjoy the great outdoors. Not so enjoyable, however, if it means sitting on or eating off grubby furniture, or slipping on sludgy decks. Michael Palm at cleaning product supplier Oates says, “Neglected decks can look weathered and tired, covered with dirt and grime, and in need of a freshen up.”

Revival movement

Decking oils are great for helping preserve and enhance the look of your timber, as they bring out the natural grain.

Wrought iron A light pressure wash should remove dirt and grime. Alternatively, thoroughly clean with soap and water – use a small brush or even an old toothbrush to get into crevices.

Giving your furniture a spruce up after a long, wet winter is a great way to refresh your outdoor room. Different methods apply to different styles of furniture and materials, so always check the manufacturer’s guidelines, where possible, before cleaning.

Touch up peeling or chipped paint to help prevent rust developing.

Cool-season weather can also cause damage, especially to timber, adds Brenna Mathews at Cabot’s.

To bring life back to your timber deck, start by giving it a hose down or light pressure wash (always spray along the direction of the grain), and scrub the surface with a deck cleaning product.

“Due to our harsh and unpredictable winter climate, cold temperatures can cause a lot of unwanted moisture in the timber, leaving blemishes and cracks in your deck,” she says.

For rejuvenating decks, concrete and patios and removing unwanted dirt and leaves, Michael recommends investing in a long-handled brush with short, stiff, durable synthetic bristles that are ideal for aggressive scrubbing. Use an appropriate stain or oil to bring your deck back to its best and give it a layer of protection for the months ahead. Oil or stain? If you’re after a fresh new look, use a deck-specific stain, suggests Brenna. “Decking stains are great for changing the colour and look of timber,” she explains. “Stains also provide a high level of UV protection.”

Keep in mind…

n Always wear the appropriate safety equipment (eye protection, gloves and a mask, for example) and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using the product or equipment.

PRO TIP

4 Smooth all over using 120-grit abrasive paper with a sanding block to remove any persistent mould. Repeat with 180-grit, then wipe with a damp cloth to remove dust. Tip: Use a palm sander with a 180-grit disc if you have one, touching up by hand sanding hard-to-reach spots.

3 Leave the solution to work for 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly using a jet spray, washing away all residue and leaving to dry in the sun. Tip: While waiting for the solution, ensure it doesn’t evaporate, especially on a hot or windy day, by misting it with a hose.

5 Finish using aerosol exterior clear varnish, keeping the can vertical and about 25cm from the surface to spray with even strokes, overlapping each for thorough coverage. Leave to touch dry, then apply a second coat and leave to dry overnight.

Refresh mouldy and tired-looking timber pieces with this quick method that provides lasting durability and helps prevent further weathering. After sanding, apply a varnish, which will be more enduring than furniture oil or wax.

it’s important to know what’s gone before. As Kelvin Walst of Dulux explains, “In older buildings, it’s possible some of the original external paint or primers may still contain lead and, as exposure can cause adverse health effects, extreme care should be taken.” He suggests using a paint test kit on a sample. “If lead is present, enlist a professional to remove it.”

Howard Tse of CSR Gyprock says, “When handling, cutting and sanding plasterboard, wearing gloves, safety glasses and an appropriate mask will minimise the chance of injury and dust inhalation.”

Hooks and shelving

Cutting tiles with a manual ‘score and snap’ tile cutter or wet saw is best, but if using a dry cutting tool, you will need to create a safe zone where flying debris and tile fragments will not hit anyone and can be contained with shields. Wear knee pads and rubber gloves when applying grout to floors. If working with heavy tiles or large quantities, enlist help when lifting and consider moving them with a hand trolley.

Creating a focal wall of artworks or floating shelves is a great weekend project. But before drilling holes, check what’s behind the wall. A good stud finder not only helps you find timber to hammer into, it detects hidden dangers. For example, the Bosch GMS 120 wall detector alerts you to the location of studs, metals and live wires up to a depth of 120mm in most plasterboard, brick and concrete walls.

Tiling DIY tiling projects are hugely popular, with enthusiasts making a statement with tiled furniture, walls and floors.

Sanding and staining floors

It’s incredibly rewarding to revamp old timber or metal furniture. But always wear suitable attire – a dust mask, eye protection and durable gloves are suitable for light sanding and scraping. If using solutions containing volatile chemicals, such as strippers or cleaners, Kelvin Walst advises wearing goggles, rubber gloves and a respirator.

Tori Clutton of Feast Watson says, “When applying a timber floor stain, it’s a good idea to wear goggles and gloves, and keep your work area well ventilated, with open windows and doors where possible.

David also cautions: “Never operate the machine without an abrasive belt fitted to the drum or without the drum guard secured, and don’t allow the power cable to come in contact with the floor sander when in operation.” You’ll also need to wear standard safety gear: enclosed footwear, protection for ears and eyes and a dust mask. Once your floors are sanded and the debris is cleared away, apply the finish.

“If the room where you’re working cannot be adequately ventilated, only work for short periods of time,” he adds.

Refinishing timber floors can transform a space and it’s a job you can tackle yourself with a range of floor sanders available for hire at Bunnings‡. Prep the floor by punching down or removing any nails, screws, tacks or fixings. Then, recommends David Krusza of Hiretech (supplier of floor sanding machines), practise the sanding motion before turning on the machine. “Set the sander alongside the right-side wall with about two thirds of the floor in front of you,” he says. “Begin with the sander drum angled off the floor, then walk forward at an even pace and ease the drum onto the floor. As you near the end of the pass, gradually raise the drum off the floor. This will help you get a feel for the technique.”
