BEAUTIFYING BURBANK One Electrical Utility Box at a Time
If you have been around the City of Burbank long enough, you may have noticed our uniquely painted utility boxes scattered in various locations throughout town. We talked to Recreation Coordinator Doug Fowler and Recreation Supervisor Noah Altman, to find out more details about the program that made this all possible.
Doug Fowler
Noah Altman
How and when was the utility box program started? Back in 2015, one of the goals of the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission (BCAC) was to find ways to bring more art into the community and provide more opportunities for local artists. Inspired by similar programs, the BCAC, in partnership with the Parks & Recreation Department, created the Burbank Arts Beautification Program. Aptly named, this program beautifies Burbank with original artwork on what would otherwise be unnoticeable utility boxes. The incredible artwork goes beyond the limitations of galleries and museums and is accessible for anyone to enjoy. What is the cultural impact and significance of this program?
About the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission The mission of the Burbank Cultural Arts Commission is to enrich the lives of Burbank residents by celebrating its diverse arts and media community, and to promote Burbank as a vibrant and enticing regional arts center. The Burbank Cultural Arts Commission virtually meets the 2nd Thursday of every month at 9:00 am. Make a public comment, meet the commissioners, or just learn more about how we try to nurture the arts in the Burbank community!
The mission of the BCAC is to enhance Burbank’s status as a regional arts destination. Public art adds enormous value to the cultural and economic vitality of a community. The painted boxes have enhanced the visual appeal of the community and promotes civic pride through beautifying the city. The benefits of the program are far reaching from the artists who receive a stipend to showcase their talents, the sponsors who generously support the program, to the community members who enjoy the artwork every day. With each successful phase of the program, Burbank’s reputation grows as an arts-centered community. Current Project Phases There are a total of 38 boxes that have been painted all over the city, with an additional 10 more boxes on Glenoaks Blvd set to be completed in Fall 2021. Phase 1 2015
Phase 4 2020
“Just Imagine” 7 boxes
“Celebrate Community” 12 boxes
Phase 2 2017
Phase 5 2021 (Coming Soon)
“A World of Possibilities” 5 boxes Phase 3 2019
“A World of Entertainment” 14 boxes
“Memorable Moments” 10 boxes (planned) https://burbankarts.com/projects/
How have the various communities responded to the art? The feedback and interest we’ve received from the community has been incredible. We saw a big increase in awareness about the program back in 2019 when we were able to work with the Public Works Department and begin painting traffic signal boxes located on street corners in various neighborhoods. It has been great to hear from different business owners and community members who find value in having public art in their area. The BCAC is currently discussing viable locations for future phases of the program. How can we find out more about each of the individual artists? The BCAC has a website dedicated to promoting the arts in Burbank. Information about past and future phases of the Burbank Arts Beautification Program can be found at burbankarts.com/projects. You will find information about each painted box including the artist’s name, bio, description of the design, and who sponsored the box. How was the artist selection process carried out? For each phase of the program, a Call for Artists is sent out including application information, guidelines, requirements, and box locations. The artists are selected through a competitive application process, which requires them to meet certain criteria and guidelines. All submissions are blindly judged by a distinguished selection committee consisting of members from local arts communities, professionals, and City of Burbank representatives. The selected artists are then randomly assigned to a predetermined box location that has been sponsored. How is this program funded? This program is completely funded through sponsorship. Recently, the Art in Public Places Committee has generously sponsored the artists’ stipend which has allowed small businesses and community members to support the program through a lower level sponsorship. This helps fund a reception, a sponsorship plaque, maintenance costs, and other associated costs. Through the public and private partnerships that have been established, this program continues to grow gaining exposure and interest from more and more artists and potential supporters. If you are interested in sponsorship opportunities, please contact burbankarts@burbankca.gov. Are you an artist who is interested in contributing to Phase 5 of this great project? Join our mailing list to receive upcoming announcements and call for artist submissions by emailing us at burbankarts@burbankca.gov.
