It is hard to believe but we are so close to the end of 2024! We here at the Adult centers want to thank all of our patrons for making 2024 another amazing year. We really enjoy bringing new activities to you guys and finding new ways to serve you!
Be sure to look out for all the holiday events happening at both centers so that you can celebrate the end of this year with your friends, family and all the staff members at Tuttle and Joslyn Adult Center!
For anyone who has visited the Joslyn Adult Center this past month, you may have noticed some room closures and furniture scattered through the center. We are pleased to announce that all floors have been cleaned and the center will be back to normal this month.
Both Joslyn and Tuttle Senior Center are packing in a bunch of amazing events in December. From health presentations, to class series; there is something for everyone. If there is anyone out there missing daytrips - there may be a temporary fix for that travel want. The “On the Move” program holds trips every month right out of Joslyn. They take a group of people to places such as museums, art exhibits, outlet malls and so much more. Be sure to check out their ad on the “Joslyn and Tuttle” events pages to learn more about how to join in on their trips!

How to Give Back for the Holiday Season
The holiday season is a time for joy, warmth, and connection, but it’s also a wonderful opportunity to spread kindness and compassion. For many people, this time of year can be challenging, so giving back can make a world of difference. Acts of generosity, big or small, bring communities together and lift spirits. In the meantime, we encourage you to incorporate these simple steps into your own campaigns:
5 WAYS TO GIVE BACK DURING THE HOLIDAYS
• Donate Food to a Food Bank
Food banks are essential year-round, but the demand often increases during the holidays. Gather non-perishable items like canned vegetables, pasta, and boxed meals to donate. Many grocery stores even have drop-off bins, making it easy to give as you shop. If you’re able, consider donating fresh produce as well, as these items are harder for food banks to stock. Your donations can help families enjoy warm meals during the season. Food banks will appreciate your kindness, and you’ll know you’ve made a real difference.
• Participate in a Toy Drive
Toy drives bring joy to children whose families may not be able to afford gifts. Check with local charities, schools, or stores that organize toy drives, and pick out some toys for donation. Focus on items that are safe and suitable for a range of ages, as well as toys that encourage creativity. Some organizations even let you buy gifts online and ship them directly. Knowing that your gift will bring a smile to a child’s face makes this effort all the more special. It’s a fun and meaningful way to spread holiday cheer.
• Bake Cookies for Neighbors or First Responders
Baking homemade treats is a simple way to spread joy around your community. Pack up some cookies or holiday treats and deliver them to neighbors, firefighters, police officers, or healthcareworkers. Including a handwritten note of appreciation adds a personal touch. Sharing these treats is a warm, festive gesture that’s sure to be appreciated. It’s also a wonderful activity to do with family or friends. You’ll bring a bit of holiday spirit wherever you go.
• Send Holiday Cards to Service Members
Sending holiday cards to members of the military shows appreciation for those serving away from their families. Organizations like Operation Gratitude collect cards to send to service members worldwide. Writing a few words of gratitude and holiday cheer can mean a lot to someone who’s far from home. This small act brings warmth and kindness to those who sacrifice so much. Your message can uplift their spirits and let them know they’re remembered.
• Donate Winter Clothes
Gently used winter coats, hats, and gloves can be invaluable to people in colder climates. Find local organizations that accept clothing donations, or place them in donation bins often found in community areas. Warm clothing is especially helpful for homeless shelters and families in need. Your contributions can help keep others safe and comfortable during winter. It’s a straightforward way to make a meaningful impact this holiday season.

Nourishing News - The Role of Sleep & Health
Although tossing-and-turning through the night is common, it should not be taken lightly. Getting a good night sleep is important for overall health. It may reduce the risk of chronic diseases, keep the brain healthy, and boost the immune system. Sleep is affected by many things including underlying medical issues and mental health; nutrition also plays a roll. Here are some ways that may help improve your sleep.
Sleep Basics 101
The amount of sleep depends on a number of factors, especially age. Although sleep needs vary among individuals, the general consensus is that adults should have 7 or more hours of sleep per night. Additional factors that affect sleep needs:
Sleep Quality– it is just as important as the quantity of sleep. If your sleep is frequently interrupted, you’re not getting quality sleep.
Sleep Deprivation - sleep needs increase if you are sleep deprived. Getting less than seven (7) hours of sleep on a regular basis has been linked to poor health, including weight gain, diabetes, high blood pressure, stroke and depression.
Need Better Sleep?
Although there is no silver bullet that will guarantee a good night’s sleep, there are some foods & beverages that may help.
Hot Tea– tea made from valerian, chamomile and other non-caffeinated options. Tea is a natural tranquilizer and may improve the quality of sleep.
Nighttime Milk– a warm glass of milk, as it contains tryptophan, an amino acid linked to better sleep. If you are lactose intolerant try lactose-free milk.
Poultry– rich in tryptophan that can induce feelings of sleepiness.
Fish– rich in vitamin B6, with salmon, tuna and halibut having the most. B6 makes melatonin, referred to as a sleep hormone.
Kiwi– a recent study suggested that this fruit can impact sleep, enhancing the duration and quuality
Nuts– walnuts, pistachios, cashews and almonds contain magnesium, zinc and melatonin, helpful to sleep.
Fresh Herbs such as basil can have a calming effect.
The Bottom Line
These foods & behaviors may help sleep, however, there is no substitute for a healthy eating pattern. Focus on a variety of colorful vegetables & fruits, whole grains, lean protein, reduced fat dairy, and healthy fats. Choosing foods from the food groups, along with an active lifestyle are vital to overall health. Enhancing a healthy eating pattern with these sleep-inducing foods and behavior changes may reduce the restless nights and turn into “sweet dreams”!
Still Can’t Sleep?
Dietary patterns and lifestyle can also impact sleep. Try making small behavior changes such as:
Limit caffeine, especially in the afternoon or evening.
Make dinner your lightest meal. Minimize spicy or rich foods.
Stop eating 2-hrs prior to bedtime.
Avoid alcohol, especially at night.
If you nap, make it earlier in the day, limit to 20-30 minutes.
Be physically active, however, avoid exercise 4-hours before bed.
Limit screen time, especially in bed.
Develop a sleep routine by going to bed at the same time each night.
