Celebrate Parks and Recreation Month in Burbank

July is Parks and Recreation Month! For nearly 40 years, the nation has celebrated this month to promote building strong, vibrant, and resilient communities through the power of parks and recreation. This month is dedicated to recognizing and celebrating the park and recreation professionals and part-time and seasonal workers and volunteers who maintain our country’s local, state, and community parks.

The Park and Recreation Department fosters a vibrant community, benefiting thousands of residents through various programs. Over 88,000 participants enjoy healthier, more active lifestyles through our sports and aquatic offerings. The inaugural Burbank Adaptive Sports Expo highlights accessible activities for nearly 400 individuals with disabilities. Additionally, 117,000 well-balanced meals are distributed to older adults and individuals with disabilities, ensuring they remain nourished and healthy. The Burbank Animal Shelter has found homes for nearly 900 animals and reunited over 200 pets with their owners. Our Animal Control Officers respond to nearly 4,000 service calls and conduct nearly 11,000 park patrols, ensuring community safety. The Landscape team maintains 125 acres of parkland and 15 ballfields, while the Forestry team cares for 33,000 trees, providing clean air and shade. Our program highlights wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Burbank's newest work of art. The latest art installation at McCambridge Recreation Center, titled “A Community in Action,” showcases the vibrant activities, programs, and diverse participants, visually representing the Burbank community with a pop of color. With 42 parks and facilities meticulously maintained, individuals and families have safe, welcoming spaces to play, create memories, and connect with one another.

Every year, the National Park and Recreation Association selects a theme to guide the nationwide celebration. This year’s theme, “Where You Belong,” celebrates the many ways in which park and recreation professionals across the country foster a sense of belonging in their community by providing welcoming and inclusive programs, essential services for all ages and abilities, and safe, accessible spaces to build meaningful connections.

Celebrating Our Staff

This July, the city of Burbank invites you to discover where you belong! With 42 parks and facilities throughout the city, finding a program, activity, or service that fits your needs and interests is at your fingertips. The Department proudly maintains:

As you learn more about our programs and facilities, we acknowledge the importance of the staff that seamlessly facilitates them. The facility attendant at the recreation center who remembers your name or the lifeguards at the pool who greet you with a smile are the people who represent the heart of the department. Their daily commitment to serving the public makes our parks and recreation services exceptional.

Get Involved

We challenge you to participate in any activity or program at your nearest recreation center or facility. Follow along at Burbankca.gov/JulyIsPRMonth or on Instagram and Facebook all month long as we spotlight the many ways you can find out "Where You Belong." The possibilities are endless!

Vin

Vin is a big puppy! He is a neutered male, cream Labrador Retriever and Alaskan Husky mix who is around a year and a half old. He’s active, alert, friendly, and enjoys attention. Sometimes he gets a little jumpy when he gets excited, but he tones it down if he’s told “off.” He also knows “sit” and “down.” He’s a great dog and super sweet, loves to cuddle but might be a bit too much for a family with small kids or little dogs.

Salt and Peppa

Salt and Peppa are a high energy and clever duo! They are a bonded pair and must be adopted together. Salt is the oldest of this duo, 4 years old, and plays rougher, while also being super smart and curious. Peppa is the youngest, 2 years old, which is evident in not only her smaller size but her goofier personality. Salt is a husky mix and Peppa is a bull terrier mix. Although they may look different, they’re still a lovable and affectionate pair!

Aquatic CardioFit

This safe, fun, and effective workout uses water exercises to build muscle and reduce body fat with little or no impact to joints, all done in a heated pool to fun and energizing music. The water offers a heavier resistance than air, so participants can experience a challenging workout while the buoyancy takes away most or all of the impact to bones and joints.

CHECK

How do you know if your tree needs to be watered? Check!

Use a screwdriver or other tool and gently push it 6-8 inches into the ground. If the soil is dry and crumbly, it may be time to water again. How often will you need to water?

Every tree is different, but generally young trees will need watering 1-3 times a week (depending on the temperature) and mature trees will need watering 1-2 times each month.

WATER

When watering your tree, think low and slow. Water at ground level to avoid losing water to evaporation.

Use a watering tool with a slow, steady release to make sure water soaks into the ground.

The goal is to get the water to the roots, which are typically 12-18 inches below the ground. Don’t forget to limit your watering times to before 9:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m.

MULCH

Mulch keeps moisture in the soil and protects your tree’s roots from extreme heat. Simply layer about 4 inches of mulch on the ground surrounding your tree, making sure to leave about 6 inches of empty space between the trunk of the tree and where the mulch begins.

Did you know that the City of Burbank has a FREE mulch program? Take a look and find a convenient pick-up location. Need a lot of it? You may qualify for home delivery. For more information, contact: (818) 238-5300.
