Burbank’s Path to Sustainable Water Use Burbank is currently in Stage III of the Sustainable Water Use Ordinance: Attended hand watering is allowed any day before 9 am or after 6 pm. Low flow irrigation is allowed on watering days, they are exempt from the 15-minute rule.

Step 1

CHECK. How do you know if your tree needs to be watered? Check! Use a screwdriver or other tool and gently push it 6-8 inches into the ground. If the soil is dry and crumbly, it may be time to water again. How often will you need to water? Every tree is different, but generally young trees will need watering 1-3 times a week (depending on the temperature) and mature trees will need watering 1-2 times each month.

Step 2

WATER. When watering your tree, think low and slow. Water at ground level to avoid losing water to evaporation. Use a watering tool with a slow, steady release to make sure water soaks into the ground. The goal is to get the water to the roots, which are typically 12-18 inches below the ground. Don’t forget to limit your watering times to before 9:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m.

Step 3

MULCH Mulch keeps moisture in the soil and protects your tree’s roots from extreme heat. Simply layer about 4 inches of mulch on the ground surrounding your tree, making sure to leave about 6 inches of empty space between the trunk of the tree and where the mulch begins. Did you know that the City of Burbank has a FREE mulch program? Take a look and find a convenient pick-up location. Need a lot of it? You may qualify for home delivery. For more information, contact: (818) 238-5300.

No outdoor evaporative cooling devices, such as misters.

Spring into Wellness! The Parks and Recreation Department (Department) is dedicated to helping community members achieve their wellness goals in 2024. Even a small change can significantly impact overall health and quality of life. That is why the Department provides various recreation spaces and programs to help residents achieve wellness goals. The aim is to guide the community through simple and accessible ways to improve physical and mental well-being.

Mental Wellness

Mental health is critical to overall wellness. The Burbank Volunteer Program is an excellent way to give back to the community while improving mental health. Studies show that volunteering can substantially boost mental wellness, particularly for seniors. Programs like Dig Burbank, Phone Pals, Meal Delivery, Plant for Greener Burbank, and more, can positively impact one’s health as well as the community's health. The first step to getting involved in the community is to learn more about the available opportunities and programs. The Burbank Volunteer Program (BVP) is an incredible program that helps organize the Department’s volunteer efforts. BVP matches local volunteers with nonprofit and public organizations with volunteer opportunities. To learn more about the BVP application process and volunteer requirements, visit www.Burbankca.gov/BVP. Let's work together to create a healthier and happier Burbank.

Dig Burbank The Dig Burbank Program is perfect for those who love the great outdoors and beautiful parks. It is ideal for individuals who don't mind getting dirty and breaking a sweat. This program enables the neighborhood parks to remain beautiful and clean. One can expect to pull weeds, sweep, and pick up trash. This program requires a low commitment as it occurs only once a month. Registration is recommended but not necessary. To learn more, visit www.BurbankCA.gov/DigBurbank.

Phone Pal Volunteering is as easy as making just one phone call. Phone Pals enables volunteers to develop friendships with willing seniors. This program matches volunteers with seniors to provide each other with companionship. This social interaction can have a meaningful impact on the volunteer and seniors in the community.

Meal Delivery Program The home delivery program is the ultimate volunteer opportunity. This dynamic program provides meals for Burbank residents over 60 who are homebound due to illness, disability, or isolation and has many volunteer opportunities. Participate by driving a delivery route, loading meals, or even packing meals. Find out more about this program by calling the Burbank Volunteer Office at 818.238.5370.

Plant for Greener Burbank The Plant for a Greener Burbank campaign enables volunteers to make a difference in parks, just like the Dig Burbank program. This program focuses specifically on planting trees, and since 2021, this initiative has planted just over 500 trees each year. This collaborative effort provides many benefits to volunteers and the community. It holds events every few months and is open to anyone willing to lend a helping hand to make Burbank beautiful and green. For additional information about this program, visit www.BurbankCA.gov/Forestry.

Physical Wellness

Physical wellness is an essential aspect of overall wellness. The Department prioritizes creating public spaces and programs that promote intentional physical movement. Burbank has many public spaces that encourage physical wellness, such as the Whitnall Highway Workout Circuit, hiking trails, the Chandler bike path, and the lap swim program. These spaces provide a place for people to exercise and connect with like-minded individuals with a common wellness goal. Learn more about these spaces below.

Whitnall Highway Looking for an easy and accessible way to stay active? Whitnall Highway Park South offers public fitness equipment and is perfect for a simple outdoor workout and is available to everyone. Located at 610 N. Whitnall Highway, Burbank, CA, the equipment can be used by people of all fitness levels. Additional fitness equipment Is conveniently located at Johnny Carson Park (400 South Bob Hope Drive) and Ralph Foy Park (3211 West Victory Boulevard).

Hiking Trails The hiking trails are perfect for those who love the outdoors and enjoy staying active. Burbank has many beautiful trails that offer breathtaking views of the city. New to hiking or prefer hiking with groups? The Stough Canyon Nature Center offers staff-led hikes monthly. One of the center's most popular hiking events are the monthly moonlight hikes. To learn more or register, visit www.BurbankCA.gov/NatureCenter, or stop by the Stough Canyon Nature Center to pick up a trail map.

Chandler Bike Path The Chandler Bike Path is a scenic route perfect for biking, walking, or running. This low-impact path is a great way to enjoy the beauty of the outdoors without the impact of rough terrain or steep inclines. It is a popular hub for recreational activities and is a great place for family walks or bike rides. The Chandler Bike Path can be accessed between North Mariposa Street and Hollywood Way along Chandler Boulevard.

Lap Swim Swimming is another excellent way to improve physical wellness. The Olympic-sized pool at the Verdugo Aquatic Facility, located at 3201 W. Verdugo Avenue, Burbank, CA 91505, provides access to both 25-yard and 50-yard courses. The facility has locker rooms, changing stalls, and indoor and outdoor showers. All swimming levels are welcome.
