SEPTEMBER UPDATES
Summer is rapidly coming to an end, and fall is knocking on the door! Unfortunately, the heat isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. So, if you need somewhere to cool down and hang out, Joslyn & Tuttle have you covered! The month of September has some great things in store for our Joslyn & Tuttle family!
We are kicking September off with Labor Day on the 4th. May it be filled with some R&R, time spent with friends & family, and perhaps some good BBQ! Did you know that the first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5, 1882? 10,000 workers took an unpaid leave that day, to march in the parade held in New York City, and nearly 20,000 were in attendance.
Dust off your grass skirts & Hawaiian shirts for our annual Rock-a-Hula, taking place September 28th, from 4:00 pm-6:00 pm at McCambridge Pool. You can sign up for this free 55+ event either at Joslyn Adult Center or from the comforts of your own home at www.BurbankParks.com. This fun(le’ale’a) event will have music, raffles, games, food, hula dancers, and of course swimming!
We are welcoming back Calm Mind with Catherine beginning Monday, September 11th. Catherine is a certified yoga and meditation practitioner, who has been in practice for 34 years. This meditation class will introduce simple techniques to support your journey to a healthier & happier life.
Burbank University Women will also be starting back up on September 14th. BUW invites all women who have completed 60 units or more of college work to assist in promoting education and intellectual growth. Activities include monthly meetings, fundraising activities, and furnishing college scholarships to graduates of Burbank high schools.
For more class information please visit Joslyn and Tuttle for a weekly schedule. We look forward to seeing all your smiling faces here at the center!

September is Healthy Aging Month, which was designated to focus national attention on the positive aspects of growing older. The “Healthy Aging Campaign” was established 15 years ago, and since then, individuals help others become aware of their physical and mental health, diet, social skills and even financial situations.
Healthy Aging Month encourages to act how you feel — instead of acting your age! This month also encourages our seniors to take charge of their well-being, by aging with a healthy body (physical health) and a healthiest mind (mental health).
TIPS TO CELEBRATE AGING HEALTHY
• Get Moving
Exercise can be as simple as walking just ten or fifteen minutes, three to four times a week and increasing as you go. Even just taking a dance class or senior yoga, gardening or mowing the lawn. There are countless ways to stay active that will keep your body moving.
• Maintain A Healthy Diet
Healthy eating is a big part of staying healthy, and the USDA emphasizes the need for more vegetables and fruits in the American diet – recommending five a day. Eat a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, and try to avoid excessive processed foods. The USDA suggests an easy way to balance nutrition: your plate should have slightly less than one quarter proteins (lean meat, fish, poultry or legumes) and fruits, slightly more than one quarter grains and vegetables. Additionally, stay hydrated by drink a lot of water, at least 6-8 glasses per day.
• Stay Social
Don’t be afraid to make new friends, and make an effort to see your old friends, too. Instead of feeling lonely and bored reach out and invite friends and family over! Or you can socialize with others by volunteering, joining a class or bringing a caregiver — which may in to help you look forward to activities such as cooking with their help, playing cards/games, or simply talking
• Balance Both Your Body & Mind
Keep your mind active by reading the newspaper (or read on your tablet) while you eat breakfast. Keeping your mind active and engaged may ward off brain chemistry changes that could lead to Alzheimer’s disease. Working on puzzles, reading books are also great for the mind and will help reduce stress that comes with aging problems.
• Get Regular Check-Ups And Yearly Physicals
Don’t ignore symptoms. If you’re not feeling well, don’t “wait for it to go away.” While you don’t need to visit the doctor for every ailment, know yourself and your body well enough to detect if there is something out of the ordinary.

The menu is set for a six week cycle. The approved menu by the Los Angeles County dietitian assists us and our project dietitian in providing nutritious, appetizing, and high quality meals for our seniors.
Nourishing News: 5– Top Foods for Eye Health
Healthy eating is good for your eyesight! Studies reveal that the five main eye diseases (cataracts, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), dry eyes, glaucoma and diabetic retinopathy) have a nutritional link. Foods with certain phytonutrients, which are p pow erful antioxidants, are important for keeping eyes healthy. The best sources of these nutrients are found in whole foods.
Dark Green Leaf y Vegetables
Dark green leafy vegetables, including spinach, collard greens and kale, contain two of the most essential antioxidants: zeaxanthin and lutein. They can protect the eyes from sun damage, which is linked to reducing the risk of AMD and cataracts. They are best absorbed when eaten with a little fat. Drizzle veggies with olive oil.
Orange Fruits & Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables that are orange in color are good sources of beta-carotene, and some are rich in vitamin C, a powerful antioxidant. They may slow macular degeneration, prevent dry-eyes and decrease the risk of cataracts. Mangos, cantaloupe, oranges, carrots and sweet potatoes are rich in these antioxidants. Eat plenty of colorful fruits & vegetables daily for maximum health benefits.
Fish
Fish, especially fatty fish, is rich in omega-3s, which may relieve dry eyes. Good sources of omega-3s are salmon, trout, albacore tuna, herring, anchovies and sardines. Salmon is also a good source of Vitamin D which reduces inflammation and supports eye health. Try to incorporate fish into your meal plan at least twice a week.
Dair y
Dairy products, such as low-fat milk and yogurt, may be good for the eyes. Both contain zinc and are excellent sources of vitamin A and D, if fortified. Zinc and vitamin A can help with night vision and prevention of cataracts. Vitamin D reduces inflammation. If you tolerate dairy products, try to have at least 2 to 3 servings per day. Yogurt is a healthy option for breakfast or as a snack.
Green Tea
Green tea is associated with many health benefits. Research suggests antioxidants in green tea, including catechins, help protect the tissues of the eye from glaucoma and other eye diseases. Enjoy a cup of green tea daily!
Other Factors to Consider
If you’re at risk of developing AMD, an eye supplement may be recommended. Discuss the risks & benefits of supplements with your eye care professional. Only use as directed.
Maintaining a healthy body weight and lifestyle contribute to eye health.
Keep blood pressure and blood sugar under control and avoid smoking.
Wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.
If you spend a lot of time focusing on one thing, your eyes can get fatigued. Give your eyes a rest to reduce eye strain.
