JANUARY UPDATES

JOSLYN ADULT CENTER

Happy New Year! As we ring in the new year, some of us have resolutions, goals, and plans, but we must make sure we all make the most out of a brandnew year no matter what! The new year will bring new activities, lectures/ presentations, classes, day trips, and performances here at Joslyn. Speaking of performances, we wanted to thank every one of you who attended the Just Love Performance last month. The Generation DCD brought holiday cheer to Joslyn, with children of all ages dancing their merry hearts out, and dressed ever so festive. They even brought home baked goodies for everyone who attended. Joslyn Center will be kicking off the New Year with a couple of presentations

Tips for New Year’s Resolutions This year has taught us gratitude and how to give thanks for things we would generally take for granted. From friends and family to health, there is so much to be thankful for as we enter the year 2024. What’s a better way to express thanks than by using our gratitude to guide our New Year’s resolutions? As you map out your 2024 New Year’s resolutions, focus on attainable goals that boost your health and overall quality of life. While resolutions will vary from individual to individual, below are seven positive ways to refocus your energy in 2024.

New Year’s Resolution Ideas • Keep a Positive Mindset Research shows that maintaining a positive mindset comes with a host of health benefits. According to the findings, positivity has been linked to a lower risk of memory loss, quicker recovery from illness, injury or disability, a lower risk of chronic disease, decreased feelings of loneliness and isolation, and an increased likelihood for seeking preventative care.

• Commit to 10 Minutes of Daily Exercise Staying active is not just the key to healthy aging, but also, it may be the key to a longer life. Though the research behind the positive effects of exercise on aging is extensive, the findings from a 30-year study effectively sum them up. Per the findings, incorporating an exercise regime of walking, jogging, or cycling in seniors can drastically improve physiological characteristics such as blood pressure, resting heart rate, maximum pumping capacity, and muscle mass.

• Stimulate your Mind Regularly challenging your brain is one of the best ways to stay mentally sharp as you age. It’s also one of the best ways to reduce your risk of memory loss or developing dementia. Simple things such as reading daily, doing crosswords, or joining a book club are great and fun ways to ensure your body’s most important muscle receives an adequate workout.

• Make New Friends and Reach out to Old Ones Studies show that socially active older adults have better cognition, lower risks of disability and depression, and overall better health. Social media makes it easy to find and reach out to old friends, while elder living communities provide ample opportunity to make new ones. Caring Seniors 2023

PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS Kundalini Yoga Mondays at Joslyn 9:00-10:00am Kundalini yoga is an ancient yoga that is referred to as the Yoga of Awareness. The asanas are based on moving the Kundalini Energy throughout the spine, enhancing brain function and intuition with movements and breath. This practice includes Reiki Self Healing Energy work as we check in with Self and then move back into balance the mind, body, and spirit. We end with meditation to open our intuitive self and re-wire our brain connections creating a deep sense of relaxation in our Central Nervous System. No experience is needed for this class.

Ukulele Thursdays at Joslyn 12:00-2:00pm Joslyn Ukulele Group is a peer-led round robin jam session comprised of very friendly and forgiving players of all abilities. The emphasis is on fun, not perfection. We are not a teaching group, but any of us are happy to help newer players with any questions or tips and tricks to make playing more fun. We play songs that cross a variety of genres, from simple two or three chord songs to much more challenging material. Members are welcome to participate as much or as little as they want, even if it’s just to sing along.

Indoor Chair Volleyball Thursdays at Joslyn 12:45-1:45pm Its just like volleyball, but in a chair using a beach ball. The game follows regular volleyball rules with some exceptions. The beach ball is larger than a regular volleyball so it is easier to control. There are many benefits to chair volleyball, such as reducing stress, improving cardiovascular fitness, increasing flexibility and toning muscles. This is a great way to enjoy some exercise and socialize. Whether you’re a seasoned volleyball layer or someone just looking to have a good time this acitvity is perfect for you! The goal of the game is to have fun while simultaneously working out - and the added teamwork and comroderie is an extra bonus! Join in on the fun! *ACTIVITY SCHEDULES CAN BE FOUND AT JOSLYN AND TUTTLE CENTERS*
