Happy July! We hope that you all are enjoying the summertime and staying cool! Volunteer opportunities are slowly, but surely, starting to open up at our BVP volunteer sites. One of the more active volunteer sites that has continued to provide services throughout the pandemic has been the City’s Senior Nutrition Program. On page 3, we highlight all of the wonderful things that staff and our volunteers have done for this program in our “Featured Station” article. If you would like to help prepare and serve meals to local seniors in the Senior Nutrition Program, check out page 5 for more information on how you can get involved. Both youth and adult volunteers are welcome. BVP has been fairly busy these past two months. We had volunteers help take care of some pets and some volunteers helped craft roses for an incredible art installment at City Hall. A big shout out to all of the volunteers who participated in these events. See page 4 for some pictures of their work! As always, thank you all so much for continuing to dedicate your time to the community. A number of you continue to assist through BVP despite returning to some sort of normalcy in your everyday lives. Staff and all of the participants in our programs greatly appreciate and acknowledge your efforts! We will continue to send out emails with new opportunities and information on how you can get involved as we move into the fall season. Best, The BVP Team Marcus & Lacey

NUTRITION SERVICES
Despite the challenges, the City of Burbank’s Nutrition Services has done some incredible things this past year! Before COVID-19, volunteers and staff were delivering meals to 130 individuals in their Home Delivered Meals (HDM) program. At the start of the pandemic, that number jumped to nearly 240 participants. Staff had to find a way to continue providing meals to participants without compromising service, as some of these participants solely depended on this program for their food. A plan was quickly devised to ensure both fresh and frozen meals were provided to participating seniors. A drive-thru meal pickup service was established at McCambridge Park to accommodate and comply with local health and safety mandates. Staff also took the time to deliver special care packages to all participants.

The Burbank community stepped up to help the Nutrition Program as well by donating nearly 1,000 meals. In November and December of 2020, Providence St. Joseph Medical Center also generously provided Thanksgiving and Christmas meals to Nutrition Program participants. Members from a local Boy Scout troop, along with other community volunteers and members of Burbank Fire Station 15, volunteered to deliver these meals to grateful seniors.

With the gradual reopening of our recreation facilities, the Senior Nutrition Program has started to allow participants to pick up their meals in person again at McCambridge Park, the Joslyn Adult Center, and the Don Tuttle Senior Center. Thanks to the incredible staff and all of the amazing BVP volunteers who have stepped in to help, the Senior Nutrition Program continues to provide meals and services to those who need it most.
If you are interested in volunteering for the Senior Nutrition Program, check out page 5 for details!
PET WELLNESS DAY Thank you volunteers!
Back in May, BVP and the Michelson Found Animals Foundation teamed up to put on a Pet Wellness Day for the community. We had a wonderful turnout and made some new furry friends. Thank you to all of the youth and SWAT volunteers who participated in this fun event!
ROSE RIVER MEMORIAL Last month, several BVP volunteers assisted with the Rose River Memorial project. The Rose River Memorial is a grassroots community art movement that honors and grieves the many lives lost during the Covid-19 pandemic in the United States by creating a felt rose as a symbol of grief for every life lost. All of the roses we received were put on display in a temporary Rose River Memorial art installation in front of City Hall. Thank you so much to the volunteers who took the time to make roses for those we have lost this past year. In case you missed this opportunity or want to continue contributing to this incredible project, please visit the Rose River Memorial website at www.roseriver.memorial.
