PLANT FOR A GREENER BURBANK

Help Burbank Achieve the Goal of Planting 500 Additional Trees!

BURBANK’S

GOAL 500 TREES OF

Join the Campaign! The

City of Burbank’s PLANT FOR A GREENER BURBANK initiative is a collaborative effort amongst Parks and Recreation; Burbank Water and Power; Community Development; and Public Works to plant a minimum of 500 additional tree throughout the City’s homes, businesses, streets, and parks. With each tree planted, we are improving the health and well-being of our neighborhoods and the overall Burbank community. Preserving a healthy tree canopy provides many benefits that we can enjoy for generations to come. The City has had a long-standing commitment to supporting a tree canopy that is healthy, diverse, and resilient. These efforts take time, and as a result we have maintained a vibrant and beautiful urban forest with over 33,000 public trees, 125 acres of parkland, and expansive tree-lined streets and neighborhoods. In fact, along with Sacramento, Burbank has celebrated over 40 years of being designated an original Tree City USA by the Arbor Day Foundation. The Initiative is one of the City’s strategies to improve the community’s health and quality of life, aligning with the City’s 2035 General Plan and the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Plan. The success of these strategies relies on the shared effort by the City and community to work together towards a safe, beautiful, and thriving community.

UPCOMING GALLERY SHOWS ZOOMORPHIA

BARRY GORDON

The Betsy Lueke Creative Arts Center is excited to kick off the New Year with Zoomorphia, featuring five very accomplished ceramicists from Southern California: Beverly Archer, Carol Horst, Dan Owen, Maryam Riazi, and Godeleine de Rosamel. These sculptors take as their subject the complicated, contradictory, and often fraught relationship that humans have with animals. In their work, they find the connections between them endlessly compelling.

Barry Gordon’s work is characterized by the use of vibrant colors and whimsical forms that grow out of recognizable human, floral, or animal shapes. Abstract landscapes and vistas sometimes provide the setting for romance, confrontation or just simply a meeting. The tone is often humorous and the message frequently one of social satire, commentary or simply an observation. He works toward a kind of musical counterpoint between color, design, composition, optical abstraction, and fantasy.

In this exhibition, as perhaps in a zoo, viewers will be invited to share in the artists’ exuberant exploration of the world of living creatures, including the potent and uneasy gap between them and us, a space made all the more interesting because of our kinship. In our common “being-ness” the artists have found intersections, parallels, and a profound source for creative exploration.
