Letter from the Treasurer Key Club has a way of bringing together all kinds of different people for one purpose. It lets you meet complete strangers and help them out by making an impact on their lives. You form new relationships with people you would have never met otherwise every single day, and those encounters stay with you wherever you go. Key Club lets you touch the lives of all kinds of individuals and that is the passion I want to instill in our new members. The one project I am really looking forwrd to this year is recruiting new members and sharing with them the meaning of Key Club and what it feels like to be a service volunteer. I’m really looking forward to Elk Camp and the beginning of the school year because as us officers will be able to find people and show them what Key Club is all about. I want to get members interested and hooked until they are able to discover this passion for themselves. In turn we will be able to help even more peple in more than one way each and every day. Letter from the Advisor The Kiwanis organization is the parent organization to key club and everyone in key club should try to attend the meetings of their town’s chapter. Our Burleson’s Kiwanis meet at noon weekly at the local Golden Corral on Wilshire Boulevard. As I was attending the latest Kiwanis meeting, I realized how much our club has grown over the past few years as the spirit of key club becomes integrated into the backbone of the community. This also made me think of where I would like to see the club be in the next year. From this, I created personal goals for the new club year. It is my goal as the 2015 – 2016 BHS key club advisor to help guide this club towards the top 25 for at least two quarters. It is my goal to help our members discover the true meaning of key club. Lastly, it is my goal to make sure everyone on the BHS campus knows who we are and what we are about. Simple things you can do to help me with my goals are to learn what key club is (you can visit our site, burlesonkeyclub.com, for resources and games), tell people you know about key club, and volunteer! If you’re not ready for any of those things, always feel free to come to meetings to get to know people. You are the key to service. Don’t lock-up that opportunity. Mrs. Hughes

Letter from the Lieutenant Governor Hey Everyone! I hope you are all having a fantastic summer and enjoying your break from school. My summer has been great so far and the best is yet to come! I have been able to dedicate more time to Key Club as well as my college and scholarship search, which has been great! I have been able to accomplish a lot as Lieutenant Governor in just a few short months, and while it has not been at all what I expected, it has been so wonderful! It’s a lot of work, but it is so rewarding! Thank you all for your continued support! I am so proud to call Burleson my home club. I have high hopes for us this year at District Convention; I know you will all do really great so long as you keep the main thing the main thing. Remember that Key Club is about service... Often I find myself getting caught up in the emails and paperwork that come with being Lieutenant Governor, but I have to remind myself that the reason I wanted to be in this position was to have the opportunity to serve in a greater capacity. Although I do have a fancy title, when it comes down to it, I’m still just a Key Clubber, I still do community service like you all, and I still have to remind myself that the world doesn’t revolve around me- I am simply a servant. So remember that, and just keep serving- even throughout the summer. Yours in Service, Vanessa

Summer Celebration

The last hoorah of the 2014-2015 school year, the final cry, the closing Key Club meeting of the year was on the beautiful June 3rd. The event was bitter-sweet as members mourned the end of weekly meetings while shoving scrumptious snacks in their faces. In fact, Clubber Vanessa Castaneda decorated a beautiful cake for Clubber Paulina Borowski as a birthday gift. Sadly, Paulina was unable to attend the meeting and later found the cake in her hair and up her nose after it was shoved in her face, all in good fun. In all, the end of the year party was a successful way to kick off summer vacation, supplying delicious food and outlining the plans for a summer filled with service, socials, and satisfaction.

Flag Day Fun

Who doesn’t party on Flag Day? In order to celebrate the day of the flag, Key Clubbers made their way to Paulina Borowski’s house for a day of planning, eating, and swimming. Many events were arranged and details were calculated in a board meeting that lasted two hours longer than originally planned. Drained from brainstorming and blueprinting, board members ate their sorrows away and swam off their worries until the end of the party. It is no doubt that June 14, 2015 was the most successful Flag Day in the history of Key Club gatherings. Key Clubbers gather around the table of goodies to grab a hot dog and a sugary drink.

Shivani Dalal passionately discusses an upcoming event, arguing that the club is in dire need of a Root Beer Float Social. Clubbers Vanessa Castaneda and Nirthure Rema listen intently to the converstaion at the table while munching on delicous hot dogs and potato chips. Clubbers Paulina Borowski and Skylar Armstrong get up and stretch their legs after a long meeting sitting in chairs.

Advisor Mrs. Hughes organizes her notes from the intense meeting.

When Life Gives You Lemons... Key Clubber’s showed up with smiling faces to Burleson’s City Market on June 22 in order to set up an station for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. Alex was a sweet young girl born in 1996 who was diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a large mass in the brain, at a very young age. Moved to help other kids just like her, Alex held an annual lemonade stand to raise awareness and money for childhood cancer. To this day, people all over the world hold lemonade stands in Alex’s name and donate all of the money to child cancer research. The Burleson Key Club did just that on the fine morning of June 22. Standing outside greeting and selling to City Market customers, Key Clubbers received many donations and gave out many cups of lemonade, going through over three gallons of the drink. After a few hours of selling pink and yellow lemonade like pros, Key Clubbers proudly raised over $100 for Alex’s cause.

Shivani Dalal once again brought Oscar the Dog to share in the Key Club glory. He showed his dedictation to the cause by attracting customers to the table with his cuteness.

Beautiful Feet, What a Great Treat! Article by Alie Shipman

The Burleson High School Key Clubbers met at their school late on the evening of June 26 to drive to the Beautiful Feet Ministries in Fort Worth. When the Key Clubbers arrived at the Beautiful Feet church, they made their way to the chapel, waiting for the service to start. The small chapel service served to remind volunteers that the goal for the night was not to glorify themselves in serving the homeless but instead to spread the gospel and serve those who do not have anything at all. After the members of Beautiful Feet shared some of their favorite bible verses and relayed to the volunteers how important the homeless stretch was, they laid down some ground rules. The instructions, however, were not all so serious; one of the most important rules was to be loud and ask a lot of questions when serving to the homeless families, for they were friendly people for the most part and were known to have meaningful conversations with the members of Beautiful Feet and their volunteers. Once all of the ground rules were set in place, the Feeters gave the volunteers two different options on where they could go: the camps or the streets. The Burleson Key Club members decided to go out in the homeless camps, a trip that loaded them on a bus to head out to a park. There, they were given water bottles and a sandwiches. Despite the Clubbers’ initial reactions, this food and water was not a gift to the Clubbers but instead and offering to the people living in the camps. The first set of people the Clubbers saw sat on the benches at the park, playing dominoes and enjoying themselves. Waters were handed out, and conversations were started, beginning the night on a good note. Soon, though, the Key Clubbers had to move on, walking further into the woods to visit more people and spread more hope. As the volunteers went into the woods, they saw a large amount of tents set up. Though the scene may have looked like a center for recreational camping, Clubbers quickly learned that the tents were homes that needed to be respected just like any other home. Clubbers and other volunteers again passed out sandwiches and water, stopping to pray for whatever struggles the people had. Sadly, the Key Clubbers had to stop their journey short due to the weather that had taken a turn for the worse; pouring rain doused the members as they walked back to the bus. However, the fun-filled evening was not quite over yet. The bus took the volunteers to a local assisted living home. When the members arrived, a service had already started, so the Key Clubbers silently waited until it concluded to help serve water bottles and sandwiches. The volunteers handed out the refreshments while conversing with the residents of the assisted living home. After blessing others with food and drink, they then prayed for the residents and even received prayers in return. The rain may have put a damper on the evening’s events, but it did not put a damper on the spirit of service that filled the Key Clubbers’ hearts.
