As the newly-inducted vice-president for the 2015-16 Key Club year, I am honored to be representing BHS Key Club once again. Over this past year, not only has our club grown exponentially in publicity and organization, but the ideas to further improve ourselves continue to flow amongst the new board of officers and members. Recently we held our first Key Club banquet on May 15th (thank you, Mrs.Hughes!) and started up a Pajama/Hat day that has proven to be quite the popular charitable fundraiser. These recent projects show that even though our club may not be large in numbers yet, it is strong and mighty. We have proven ourselves more than capable of improvement and we can only go up from where we are now. On that note, be preparing for amazing summer service projects and events and be thinking of all that we can do next year for ourself and others. Remember to stay updated via Key Club social media and group texts, especially as we part for the summer. If you have any questions for me or just need someone to rant about Grey’s Anatomy with, feel free to contact me through text, email, or social media at any point in time (I stay up late watching Grey’s Anatomy). I love you all, and thank you for electing me as your VP! Have a great summer! -Skyelar

Food, Friends, and Facts
On May 2, Key Clubbers from all over Division 1S joined together for the very first Presidential Council Meeting of the year, a perplexing picnic at Warren Park. Our very own Key Club member, Vanessa Casta単eda, exercised her new responsibilities as Lieutenant Governor, taking control and yielding a successful outcome, despite the lack of crunchy peanut butter available for lunch. On this gorgeous Saturday, Clubbers from near and far showed up for food, friends, and facts, as a delicious picnic lunch was served, ice-breakers helped the social scene, and upcoming division events were discussed. As Key Clubbers gobbled up their turkey sandwiches (no pun intended), names were learned through a repetitive icebreaker where everyone learned that Alie likes to read, Cole likes green, Alfredo plays tennis, and more. Eventually, the fun and games were over and it was time for business. Vanessa went through the calendar and discussed important events coming up in the Key Club world of Division 1S. Overall, it was a great Saturday, mainly because of the food. Key Clubers from all over Division 1S gather in a cirlce for the brainfrying ice breaker.
Skylar Armstrong laughs as a group of Clubbers pose for a squad picture.
Key Clubbers from all over Division 1S smile for a picture during their first ever PCM at Warren Park.
Key Clubbers from various clubs smile for the camera as they mingle before starting the PCM.
Clubbers from the Everman Club laugh as they attempt to make a sandwhich in the whipping wind.

Letting Loose the Dr. Seuss On May 15, Dr. Seuss permeated the atmosphere as Clubbers gathered in the cafeteria for the first annual Key Club Banquet. The banquet was a truly enchanting event, decorated beautifully with Dr. Seuss themed adornments including on-point Dr. Seuss quotes festooning each table. The thought put into the event was evident especially on the food table, as dining options included green eggs and ham (deviled eggs with green food coloring and ham sandwiches), The Lorax (an ambiguous orange drink), The Pink Ink Yink Drink (delicious pink lemonade), along with various other foods. But it wasn’t only the themed food and decorations that made the banquet special, but the events that went on. New Officers were officially inducted, awards and accolades were passed out to deserving members, and the president, Nithure Rema, gave a wildly funny and inspiring speech, much underappreciated according to lack of deserved laughter at her constant puns. In all, the banquet was a success, a beautiful precedent to what is to come in the future of the BHS Key Club.

Skylar Armstrong shows off her “Most Creeative” Award, welldeserved due to her relentless ideas and action on creative projects in Key Club
Vanessa Castaneda, Nithure Rema, Mrs. Hughes, Alie Shipman, and Skylar Armstrong flash their smiles in a post-banquet picture. Nithure Rema uses her hands as she tells a joke in her amazing presidential speech.
As the incoming officers listen to Vanessa’s speech officially inaguarating them, many reactions can be seen through Paulina Borowski’s “Not Bad” face, Alie Shipman’s expression revealing that her heels are hurting her feet, Naomi’s bright smile, Shivani’ Dalal’s goofy grin, Skylar Armstrong’s attention, and Nithure’s examination of her shoes.

Kiwanis Day of Fun and Flapjacks
Tyra Marks gladly pushes an elderly man toward the entrance of the pancake parlor, stopping to ask if there is a ramp close by. Tyra Marks and Shivani Dalal handle money from the ticket sales.
Shivani Dalal of course brought the ever-famous Oscar the Dog to the ranch, boasting that “he doesn’t like to dance, but I make him anyway.”
On the foggy morning of May 9, they Burleson Key Clubbers headed out to Russell Boren Farms for a fun-filled day of games and breakfast. Wait, breakfast? Yes, you read right, for it was the annual Kiwanis Pancake Day! On this day, your favorite flipping flapjacks were served just the way you like them, with a healthy heap of butter and dripping with syrup. The breakfast started promptly at 8:00 am and lasted until 1:00 p.m. The Key Clubbers had been selling tickets for $6.00 each, also sold at the door for the same price. Once Key Clubbers arrived at the farm, they grabbed some pancakes and sat down for their share of a delicious breakfast. When they were finished with their flapjacks, some of the Clubbers went off in search for games that needed assistance setting up or required a volunteer for monitoring. Other Clubbers stationed themselves at the ticket table, collecting money and tickets as more and more people filled the farm. Of these welcomed guests, a group of hungry elderly men and women arrived in a small bus, ready to eat pancakes and sausage while enjoying great company. The Key Clubbers assisted a few of the elderly men and women off of the bus and into the dairy barn where the pancakes were located at. As a whole, the Key Clubbers enjoyed helping their fellow Kiwanian, especially with the opportunity to eat some delicious pancakes along the way.
Clubber Vanessa Castaneda smiles as she holds the door open for an entering elderly couple hungry for some hot pancakes.

Icebreakers, Forums, and News, Oh My! On May 16, the annual Key Club Spring Training Conference (STC) was held at Arlington High School where Key Clubbers entered with smiling faces and spirited costumes. The building was decorated magnificently, festooned with decorations of corn fields, lollipops, flowers, tin, and of course, a yellow brick road; that’s right, the STC theme was none other than The Wizard of Oz. At this lovely conference, Key Clubbers from various divisions came together to learn more about where they fit in the grand scheme of all things Key Club. The first thing on the agenda was icebreakers. BHS Clubbers mingled with all types of people, from munchkins to witches, playing a unique game of “Gorilla, Man, Gun,” similar to “Rock, Paper, Scissors.” After this ice breaker, Clubbers broke off into their respective forums, off to learn what it takes to be successful in a unique position. The helpful forums ate up a few hours, but the conference soon moved on with a delicious lunch and a mini service project. After Clubbers wolfed down pizza, cards and letters to veterans were beautifully crafted. As crayons were being set down, the LTGs in charge, including our very own Vanessa Castaneda, put on a General Session where information about Key Club as a whole along with certain upcoming events was discussed. Before releasing the Clubbers, individual PCMs (Presidential Council Meetings) were held to tie up any loose ends. By the end of the day, Clubbers were tired but full of information and pizza. Especially after winning cool prizes through raffle drawings and costume contests, Clubbers left knowing that there is no place like Key Club. Nithure Rema ans Skylar Armstrong work hard on their cards to veterans.
Various Clubbers laugh during the ice breaker as they find out they just died, for everyone knows that Gorilla beats Man. Alie Shipman makes a funny face during the Ice Breaker, revealing her non-witch-like personality, despite her festive dressing up. Meanwhile, the munchkin in the background licks her lillipop.
Munchkin Paulina Borowski sports her child-like pigtails while coloring a pretty card to give to the veterans.
LTG Vanessa Casteneda, sporting her cowardly lion cosume, smiles when meeting new Key Clubbers.

Jammies and Hats in the Halls
On May 22, Key Clubbers hosted a school-wide Pajama and Hat Day in order to raise money to support both a struggling student and the Eliminate Cause. Not sure how a PJ Day can raise money? It’s quite simple; sell the right to break dress code (with the principal’s permission, of course). This is how it worked: If a student wanted to wear their special fluffy jammies or their new swag snapback on Friday, they would have to purchase a “PJ pass.” These passes were sold for $2 during all three lunches in the week leading up to the big day. When the time came to impress friends with violation of the dress code, students with PJ passes flooded the hallways, showing off not only their Angry Birds PJ pants but also their support for the Key Club cause. All proceeds, over $150, were split between Eliminate and the Campbells, the family of Strutter Captain Kaitlin Campbell, who are currently pushing through hard times after their house was burned badly by a lighting strike. The PJ and Hat Day was a great success not only because it raised money for two great causes but also because it allowed the Burleson Key Club to make an impact both locally and globally.
