Enjoy the Great Outdoors
plenty of walking and biking trails, tennis courts, a pitch-andputt golf course, lawn bowling and horseshoe pitches, all under a lovely canopy of lush, native trees, including Douglas fir, western hemlock, cedar, poplar and maple. There are also ball diamonds, a fitness circuit, outdoor pool, and kids’ playgrounds. Don’t forget the Swangard Stadium, which hosts a variety of sporting and cultural events over the year. Scale Burnaby Mountain for breathtaking views of the Burrard Inlet and the North Shore. You’ll find the Kamui Mintara (Playground of the Gods) totems on top of the hill, created by Japanese sculptors Nuburi Toko and his son Shusei, gifted to the city to show goodwill between
Burnaby and Kushiro, Japan, our sister city. There’s cycling, casual picnic sites, the 1,400-metre-long velodrome trail, and a lovely rose garden. For mountain bikers, there’s downhill trails for riders of varying difficulties, some with obstacles. The trails attract riders of all skill levels from across the Lower Mainland. Appreciate the beauty of the Fraser River at Burnaby Fraser Foreshore Park. The shoreline trail is popular for runners, or you can sit at one of the benches along the path and take in the scenery. The city has expanded its trail system here. Deer Lake Park is known both for its scenic lake views and as the hub of Burnaby’s cultural and art activity. If you follow the walking trails, you might end up at the Shadbolt Centre for the Arts, the Burnaby Village Museum, Deer Lake Gallery or the Burnaby Art Gallery (facilities are expected to be reopened as the summer moves on). There’s lots of grassy areas to rest along the way. If you’re hungry, stop with your lunch at one of the picnic sites or get a bite to eat at the Hart House Restaurant.
