Happy Anniversary!

This year is Burwell Print’s 25th Anniversary! It’s amazing to think that we’ve been around for such a long time. The organisation has changed and developed massively over the years but our ethos remains the same.

It all began in November 1988. Two groups, Patch 22 and the printing class from Barton Hall (a residential home for young autistic adults in Barton Mills) came together to provide an affordable printing service for local community groups as well as providing work based training for this group.

Based in a PortaKabin in the

grounds of Burwell Village College there was one member of staff and space for up to six Printers each day.

The services we offered then were defined by the technology of the time, an Apple Mac system and litho machine, were used to print leaflets, booklets and village magazines. By the mid 1990s we had a black and a colour photocopier and were printing with a risograph.

With the new, purpose built Print Centre in 1999 came screen and t-shirt printing. Burwell Print continued to grow its business and customer base, as well as offering

accredited training.

Around the same time, other social enterprises were being established in Cambridgeshire. The Prospects Trust in Reach, Branching Out in Littleport and Rowan in Cambridge. During the early years Burwell Print linked with these organisations to network, fundraise and support one another. The group known as Steng developed through these working partnerships.

Look how far we’ve come Today Burwell Print offers a wide range of printing services. Using the latest design technology, Adobe Creative Suite, we can take in our customer’s work in any format and redesign it to suit their needs.

We have a top of the range Digital Colour Press which enables us to produce top quality print work.

The products we now produce range from business cards to placemats.

Our customer base is varied and has grown enormously. We still print many of the local village magazines, as well as printing for national companies such as Forresters.

More recently we competed with other print/design companies to re-brand Headway, Cambridgeshire.

Burwell Print was successful and we now print all their literature including information packs.

There is so much more information on Burwell Print’s history and a Timeline Project is underway to include the highlights of the past 25years.

Timeline Project Joe Byrne and I are working on the Timeline Project together.

The Timeline Project began its’ life after several of our Printers asked me how long they had worked here.

I decided to try and put together a definitive list and whilst searching through our archive boxes began to find hordes of interesting documents, photos and annual reports.

The project then grew and grew and has coincided with this being our 25th anniversary year. I hope to have

a collection of photographs and information on display and a power point presentation for our “Big Event” on 14th September.

We are kicking off our 25 year celebrations with a Ceilidh on Saturday 27th April at Burwell Village College, from 7 to 10.30pm.

The Parson’s Nose Ceilidh Band will get us onto the dance floor or just clapping along to the music.

Mugs make Mothers’ Day! Our Mothers Day mug printing workshop was a success. Children came in that Saturday morning with dads and grandparents. The children crayoned and coloured their designs which were scanned, then printed on the special printing paper, taped to the mug and put into the heat press. The children watched the

Work experience at Centre Peace For the past 4 years Printers have had the opportunity to do some work experience with a local charity, Centre Peace. Based on The Causeway, the bookshop is not only somewhere to buy used books and cds but its friendly volunteers welcome you with a hot drink and a chat. Usman is the latest Printer

Not wishing to leave dads out, we shall be holding our Father’s Day Mug Printing Workshop on, Saturday 1st June 9.30-12 noon.

Our link worker with Centre Peace, Pauline said “Usman was very helpful and friendly with customers. A pleasure to have and we’ll be sorry to see him go.”

Our current volunteer is Melissa and more Printers are in the wings waiting to take their turn. We really value this opportunity for the Printers, long may it continue!

Nick at the O2 On the 1st of March I went to see Girls Aloud in the O2 arena. I went because I got tickets. I went with Janine who is my friend. It was good.

I liked everything. Girls Aloud were fantastic. I loved their performance.

We travelled to London by train

which was the quickest way to get there. I stayed overnight at a hotel.

It felt like I had some time off.

A LEAP forward LEAP – a recently established Social Enterprise has places for learning opportunities in horticulture and conservation, read on to find out more...

The LEAP Centre is an exciting new Social Enterprise set up at Huntingdonshire Regional College.

At the LEAP Centre we aim to provide a safe, secure but challenging environment for adults with learning difficulties and disabilities. It is a place where you can learn useful life and work skills, improve your self-confidence and self-esteem with a view to progression to open employment or voluntary work.

If you are interested in horticulture we have opportunities in our Plant Place to learn about the whole

process of growing plants to selling them. If it is the environment and conservation that interests you we have our Green Team who help to support the work of Councils, Wildlife Trusts, the RSPB and other local and national bodies in Country Parks, Nature Reserves and open spaces. Working alongside their staff and volunteers we contribute to the upkeep of these areas. We shall shortly be starting a Garden Maintenance Team and also opening a shop to enable us to offer a variety of opportunities for our co-workers.

A well earned rest Frances Gillet has been a Printer here with us for 12 years. Frances recently decided to retire from Burwell Print. She has been a dedicated and hard working member of the team, who rarely missed a working day.

We had a party to celebrate Frances’ retirement and thank her for her hard work. Frances was presented with gifts including a necklace, chocolates, a teddy bear and a bag we printed for her with a picture of Frances’ idol- Tom Jones!

We shall miss you Frances, Mondays won’t be the same! We wish you a long and happy retirement.

Welcome to John Smith, our new Treasurer. Having recently retired

after nearly 40 years in the Technology Industry I joined the Board of Trustees as Treasurer in Nov 2012. I have lived in Burwell for 16 years with my wife Helen and daughter Alyx. I became aware of the Print Centre and the great work that is done through Helen who has been working as a volunteer at the Centre for just over a year. I am hoping that some of my experience gained from many years in business will be of benefit to the enterprise. In particular helping to develop strategic business plans to ensure the successful continuation of the Print Centre’s work.

In the relatively short time I have been involved, I have been very impressed with the dedication and commitment of the staff and the highly appreciated benefits to the Printers. I am looking forward to working with the team to make sure the Centre has a secure and successful future.

My personal interests are cycling, swimming and persevering on guitar with limited success. For my sins I am also a lifelong Arsenal supporter.

We usually take part in Red Nose Day, dress up in some way and have a collection.

The Printer’s discussed the event at their Printer’s meetings and decided, this year, rather than just take part on the day we would have a Red Nose week! That way all Printers can take part and do their bit. They decided to wear something funny on their head like a wig, hat, glasses or of course a red nose.

It wasn’t as bad as I thought but I did need to keep a bowl of water on the floor handy!”

Chris’ efforts alone raised £80 and the grand total collected was £149.95! A big thank you to everyone who supported the fundraising.

A special birthday Chris O’ did something really funny for money-he pledged to eat a box of Bonio dog biscults!

Chris began his challenge on Tuesday, “Twenty five years ago I ate a box of Bonios for the very first Red Nose Day. So to celebrate 25 years of Burwell Print, I decided to repeat the feat.

In January Mark Stockdale celebrated his 50th birthday. Mark brought in a fantastic cake to share with everyone. We sang happy birthday and enjoyed a slice of cake.
