Autumn 2015

A grand day out The Printers voted to do something different for our summer trip, to try out the bicycles at “You can bike too” in Milton Country Park. On arrival we played a game of rounders which was great fun. We didn’t realise we had such sporty types, Tracy and Rod hit the ball almost out of the park!

After our picnic lunch we gathered together for the cycling. The staff and volunteers of the bike project were really friendly and helpful. There was a good assortment of cycles to choose from. Everyone was eager to get started. We tried

out bikes that took two or three people and some Printers went solo on tricycles. We followed a marked circuit which took us through the trees. We didn’t really know what to expect from the day but we all had tremendous fun. The sun came out and it was so lovely cycling through the park and seeing everyone with smiling faces. James said “I loved it, I liked the different bikes.”

More fruitful learning Social Training Enterprise Group (STEnG) members are always keen to work together. In June, Sue and Gill wrote an application to the Cambridgeshire Adult Learning Fund describing another innovative project that we wanted to set up, named Fruitful Learning. We were delighted when we heard that we had been successful. This means that four people from each of the four organisations involved – Burwell Print, Camtrust, Darwin Nursery and Red2green will be working together on Tuesday mornings until May of next year. It has been a very busy and exciting start to the Fruitful Learning project. A group of learners have already visited Darwin Nursery’s orchard and taken part in an apple juice tasting session.

We had a great response from the villagers of Burwell and were invited to pick eating apples from three

orchards. It has been a bumper crop this year and we managed to pick 1047 apples ready for juicing! We are all looking forward to visiting an apple juicing factory in Wisbech, before pressing our own apples at the end of October at the Darwin Nursery’s Apple Event. Watch this space for more news from the Fruitful Learning crew.

What’s new We are making it easier for customers to pay for their print work as we now accept debit and credit cards. Payments can be made via chip and pin or contactless payments including Apple Pay.

We are very excited to have 2 new apple mac computers in the design room. This up-to-date technology and use of Adobe Creative Cloud on these computers will enable us to produce work of a higher standard and assist in our web design work.

Customers often ask if we sell picture frames. With the help of Helen, one of our volunteers we have sourced some good quality frames which are now on sale. Displayed in our “new look” foyer we have a range of sizes in three. colours with more options available to order. We are also selling prints by the well known artist Alex Clarke at a very competitive price, which make excellent gifts. We have examples of our canvas printing and you can see how amazing an ordinary holiday snap can look mounted in a nice frame. So please pay us a visit and take a look at our framing display.

Community by name and by nature Sue was really pleased to see an advert promoting the launch of a community café in Fordham and immediately thought of Dan! She went to check it out, delicious cake by the way, and spoke to Cilla about the possibility of the café offering Dan, one of our Printers, some work experience. Cilla was delighted with the idea, as was Dan. Dan’s Report The Chicken Shed is every Friday from 10:00 until 12:30. We sell drinks, lots of different cakes as well as cards and different items. My job includes washing up dishes and serving customers. I help with setting up in the morning, cleaning tables and putting cutlery away. It is called the Chicken Shed because Cilla keeps chickens and you can see the chicks. Each week we support a different charity, people give a donation for

their drinks and cake. We have raised money for Macmillan Cancer Support, Fordham Tots as well as the Stroke Association. Last week we had the Guide Dog charity and a lady who trains guide dogs brought one in with her. We even tried pouring drinks blind-folded to understand how difficult it is when you can’t see. The morning raised more than £200! It’s a delight to be part of a project supporting local charities. I really enjoy meeting new people and helping a worthwhile cause. I would like to thank Cilla and all the supporters. By Dan Jaggard

When promoting Burwell Print at the Burwell At Large event Sue met Caroline and Andrea of the Wrap Around Club and asked if they’d be interested doing something together. A few meetings were held and we came up with the idea of a jewellery

and mug printing session during the summer holidays. Along with Andrea and Caroline 22 children arrived on a Wednesday afternoon. Beads everywhere and the printer decided to play up but Sue and Sarah kept smiling and fun was had by all!

Hello and goodbye

Nicholas joined us in August. He had visited Burwell Print earlier this year with another social enterprise, Copy Cats. Nicholas moved to Janet moved on from Burwell Print at the end of August. Janet had been a Printer here for more than 20 years. During that time Janet had been part of the Print Centres’ development and seen numerous changes. An accomplished Printer Janet learnt many skills with us and was particularly good at operating several of the machines. Janet has lots of friends at Burwell Print who were sad to see her leave but wish her well in the future.

Burwell in the summer and decided to try us out. Nicholas is a rugby fan and also likes being outdoors in the garden in his spare time. Nicholas and his brother recently built a hedgehog hotel in their garden! Nicholas said “ I am finding the work here interesting. So far my favourite machine is the big guillotine. I think all the people here are very friendly.

Goodbye Janet and thank you for all your hard work over the years. Please remember us and pop in anytime for a cuppa and a chat!

Open day Unbelievably another year has rolled around and it was once again time for our Open Day. The weather was just the sort of day for a barbeque and a natter with friends so that is exactly what we did with a certificate presentation thrown in for good measure!

News on the U’s We welcome a new and regular feature to Printer’s Progress, a column reporting on the fortunes of Cambridge United F.C, written by our resident fans Edward and Elliott (one of our volunteers). Edward is a season ticket holder and has followed the club since the mid 80’s. So over to you chaps…. The 2015/16 season started with the fans expecting a higher league position and maybe win

promotion. Cambridge are currently 15th in League Two. Richard Money signed several new players and a return for midfielder Luke Berry. So far the results have been inconsistent after a promising start but there are signs that the U’s are heading in the right direction and showing character like coming back from 2-0 down away at York City to draw 2-2 recently. Some of the best signings have been Barry Corr, Daniel Carr, Ryan Donaldson and James Akintunde who have impressed with their skills on and off the ball. The fans are also increasing with new supporters. Up the U’s! By Edward Scullion and Elliott Steele

Proud Printers Several of our Printers efforts have been rewarded with some marvellous achievements recently. Lucy took part in the drama group, Bedazzled weekend residential. All the participants learnt new songs and dances for a performance at the end of the two days. Lucy was presented with this fabulous trophy!

Mark took part in a sports event organised by and held at USAF Base Mildenhall. Mark said “I enjoyed the day. I played darts and a Frisbee game. I really liked the food too!”

On your bike! If you live in Burwell and your copy of Printer’s Progress arrives through your door without a stamp– don’t panic! It has been hand delivered by volunteers Elliott or Julie. We have worked out that our pedalling power could save Burwell Print up to £100 per year in postage costs! By Julie Sangster

Just purrfect

Cat lover Steven has found a perfect way to spend some time, by volunteering for the Cats Protection League. Alternate Mondays Steven travels to their rehoming centre in Downham Market to help care for his favourite animals. Steven said “I love going there. I stroke and brush the cats, it’s lovely.”

Don’t forget!
