Spring 2015
Sprung into action!
We all returned to work well rested and raring to go after our Christmas break. As expected January was fairly quiet but gradually work has increased and now, as we approach spring I am happy to report the Print Centre is a hive of activity!
We have also been working with customers who want to use a range of our services. Dalyan Turkish restaurant in Newmarket has moved to new premises and wanted a new look for their menus as well as vinyl signage for the restaurant window. The same images were used on the menus, as well as the window, helping to give the restaurant a new identity.
Similarly we have been working with a new start up business– Passion Barbers. Following their specifications we have printed price lists, business cards and staff clothing.
New year, new targets We are currently working with the Printers to revise and set new targets for them. There are several tasks that are carried out each day, such as paying wages and completing the work board, but as our business grows so do our training opportunities. Something we are trying is Printers “buddying up and working together. Here Mark and Julia are supporting each other to work on the electric creaser. Printers with previous experience in a task are supporting
those new to it. This has a double benefit, training for one Printer and the opportunity to practise what has already been learnt for the other.
Sharing what we do
Copy Cats, like us, provides work experience and training in printing for adults with learning disabilities. Based in Saffron Walden, they heard about Burwell Print, got in touch and we arranged a visit. Their business, although along similar lines, is in the early stages of it’s development. Our visitors were very
impressed with the Print Centre and our working methods. They stayed with us for the morning and saw many of the machines in action. They left with ideas of how they might take their business forward and invited us to visit them for a similar experience.
Hello... goodbye Goodbye Vikki After more than 9 years as a Support Worker at Burwell Print Vikki decided it was time for her to move on. We all enjoyed working with her and we were sad to see her go. Having said this I’m sure she won’t get away that easily and she’ll be popping in regularly, even if it’s only to pass on extra eggs from her chickens! While Vikki worked with us she had her little girl Lily and we used to love hearing about her growing up and the things she got up to. We would like to wish Vikki well in all that she’s doing now and any new endeavours that she might be thinking of. Thank you Vikki, keep in touch and get making them tutus for our Christmas Fayre !
Hello Sam
Sam lives in Burwell and came to have a look round the Print Centre because she wanted to get out and about more and meet new people. Sue came up with the great idea of Sam working in reception as our first supported volunteer. Sam has been volunteering for a few months now and getting on really well. With the support of staff from where Sam lives, Sam greets customers and passes messages onto Print Centre staff. Sam has made friends here and enjoys a cup of tea and a natter with us all at tea break. Hello Julie We are very pleased to welcome back Julie who has been on a long break from Burwell Print as she wasn’t feeling well. Julie is much better now and easing herself back into work. It’s great to have you back Julie!
Back to basics
We have been putting into practice some of the methods and ideas taken from the lino print workshop Vaughan and Mel attended last year. Printers have been experimenting with printing inks, rolling bright colours onto leaves and foliage we collected, then printing with them onto card. This most basic of printing techniques has produced some great results. Since then we have moved on to using materials we can make patterns and marks in to create printing blocks to ink up and print with, and amazingly
polystyrene pizza bases are great for this! Most recently we have used our old Christmas cards for inspiration to draw and paint designs we may use to print cards for this years Christmas Fayre. Julia did some excellent work, she said “I like drawing. I like to do felt tip drawings at home. We have some excellent high tech machines at Burwell Print but sometimes it’s nice to get back to basics.
Print on canvas Have you taken some great photographs but don’t really know how best to display them? How about a canvas print? They are excellent for family snaps through to more considered photography shots. We print your photograph onto genuine cotton canvas. There is a range of sizes in both square and rectangular frames. Simply bring your photo in on a memory card/ stick or email the image to us and we’ll do the rest. There is no better time to do this as we currently have 20% off all canvas orders until the end of March.
Tying the knot?
We’ve had several excited couples in recently who are beginning to plan their weddings. They have been pleasantly surprised with our wedding stationery designs and also our ability to make their own ideas a reality. Don’t forget to recommend us if you know any couples planning their happy day.
Just the ticket As the nice weather is (hopefully!) approaching, fetes and other fundraising events are being planned. Did you know we are able to print raffle tickets? Usually stapled together in books of 5 tickets they are perforated to tear off from the stub. Each ticket is printed with a serial number and the information specific to your event, eg. the prizes, date of the draw, monies raised in aid of etc. Why not pop into the Print Centre or email us your requirements for a competitive quote.
A Cracking Christmas Fayre We are pleased to report that our first Christmas Fayre was a massive success! Held at the Mandeville Hall, on a bright cold day at the beginning of December the event was extremely well attended.
Santa’s residence was our own creation and we had great fun putting it all together. We had more than 40 children visit Santa and his elves, each taking home a present.
There were over 20 stalls selling a wide range of products, refreshments with hot snacks, mulled wine and of course Santa’s Grotto! A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard to make the day a success. We have already booked Mandeville Hall for this year. So put 5th December in your diaries for more Christmas fun.
Thank you! A really big thank you goes out to both the Cambridge Lodge of Freemasons and to the Burwell Carpet Bowls Club whose donations amounted to more than £500!
Bowling fun
In the week before Christmas we went to Strikes in Ely for our seasonal celebration. Everyone enjoyed a game of ten pin bowling followed by a buffet lunch.
Rod said “ I had a really good time, I had a laugh that day.” Afterwards we came back to the Print Centre for mince pies and a good old sing song on the Karaoke!
Our feathered friends Spring has sprung for the birds. Outside our kitchen window is a cherry tree which we hang feeders on for the birds. It’s great to watch and see how many visitors we have. So far we have spotted Blue Tits, Dunnocks, Great Tits and a
frequent sight is a lovely little Robin. He though, seems to regard the tree as his very own and noisily chases away other birds!
