Training technology At a meeting at Burwell Print it was agreed that it would be great to have iPads for Printers to use for additional computer training, both in work and break times. We also agreed it would be good to have these for people who wanted to gain more confidence and to improve their dexterity.

Sue said she would write a funding application to the Newmarket Lions as they have been very supportive in the past and we were all delighted when they agreed to purchase three iPads!

Printer’s have been using the iPads almost daily. The apps we have installed on the devices are enhancing the Printers learning. They have enabled Printers to practice their literacy and visual skills. Each of the learning apps have a range of levels to suit the individual.

The iPads have proved to be extremely useful and an excellent way to keep Printers busy in quiet times at the Print Centre. Many of our Printers don’t have access to this type of technology in their lives and have been fascinated with what the iPads can do. Mark said “ I love using the iPads, I would like one at home”.

Dan said “They are excellent. You can learn when you use them”.

A huge thank you to Newmarket Lions for their support and enabling Printers to access new technology.

Hello-goodbye Josh decided towards the end of last year that it was time for him to leave Burwell Print. Josh had learnt a great deal in his time here and had matured into a more independent young man. As reported in a previous Printer’s Progress, Josh was working on a farm project one day a week. Josh has a real passion for animals and being outdoors and wanted to spend more time at the farm. Josh’s last day with us was just before Christmas when we presented him with a book of memories from his years at Burwell Print.

Our second new Printer is Adrian, he said “I have made many new friends and my best day of the week is Friday - the day I am at Burwell Print! My favourite job is using the booklet maker. Each week I make up the Printer’s wages. I am looking forward to working in Reception.”

When Printers have been with us for a long time it is sometimes good to try other things away from Burwell Print. That is exactly what Lucy and Steven are doing, they have reduced their days here to do something else. Steven is going to Darwin Nurseries and working in their Farm Shop and Lucy is at

Rowan Humberstone. Both are enjoying their new placements. Lucy said “ I am enjoying my time at Rowan. I like meeting new people and making friends. At the moment I am making a clay mushroom with another student called Carl. This week we are going on a trip to the Botanical Gardens in Cambridge to get some ideas for our art work.”

Steven said “ I work on the till serving fruit and vegetables. We also sell pet food and wild bird seed.

Hopefully I will be going to Darwin Nurseries for a long time, I enjoy it very much.”

New experience I have started work experience at the Day Centre in Burwell where I am going to learn some new skills. I am being trained to set tables and I also wash up. I ask people what they would like to drink and take their drinks to them. I also serve biscuits which are smartly laid out.

The staff are very friendly. I walk to the Day Centre as it’s not too far from the Print Centre and this helps with my fitness. I will write another report in the next issue as I have not been working there long.

Slip sliding away In January this year. I went skiing to Villars Surollon in Switzerland. We stayed in a hotel with a swimming pool. It was cold, some days it got down to -20°. Some days were better than others for skiing. Not much snow when we arrived but then we got lots. Every day was fun.

My best bit was going through the trees and falling down. The snow was very deep and my skis got stuck! Every day was an adventure.

Out of hours

Merry marmalade

We have long held the thought that although the Print Centre is well used Monday to Friday 9am till 4.30pm there are many hours outside of those times that the building could benefit people in some way. After a few brainstorming meetings we have come up with some ideas and have a plan of action!

We are organising an Art and Craft Day on Saturday 11th June. Sally Hunter a local artist will be leading a drawing session using a variety of drawing materials. There will also be a printing workshop when we hope to create some large scale prints using a range of techniques.

Later in the year, craftsperson Barbara Redman will be leading a Christmas Craft Workshop here at the Print Centre. There will be a variety of things to make and do e.g. card making, decorations and more.

A quick catch up from the Fruitful Learning Crew. We have been busy working to produce our very own marmalade to sell within the four Social Training Enterprises. We worked to develop our knowledge of food miles. To understand the journey the Seville oranges make to reach us in Cambridgeshire. We all had a great time learning how to make and produce marmalade at Darwin Nurseries. Just a clue - our final project is going to be a bit jammy! By Jane Sulch

As an organisation we like to do things the best we possibly can. With that in mind we are thinking about Printer’s Progress and want to ask you what you think of it. What could be changed, added or improved? Next issue will include a questionnaire for you complete and tell us what you think!

Learning new things One Monday we thought we would have a creative afternoon here at Burwell Print. We had a go at working with lino to make an artist’s print of our drawings. Lino printing is a form of printmaking used by artists where the drawing is cut into a material called lino with a special knife. It’s a bit like drawing but with a knife instead of a pencil. Where the surface is cut it feels bumpy and the ink cannot get on the bits you have cut away. Once we had cut our picture out we used a roller to put green ink on and pressed the paper on top of the inky surface. Our

drawings were then printed onto the paper and we could make many repeats with the same design.

In the pictures you can see some of our printers having a go and the art we made. James cut a lino print of his favourite hobby and made a footballer. There were some other brilliant designs too, a bird, a flower, even a submarine!

Co-op gives us a break Burwell Print was delighted to receive a gift of tea, coffee, squash and biscuits from the Co-op at Ness Road Burwell. Each month of this year, the Co-op is making a donation to a local charity and February was our turn. A big thank you to all at the Co-op for thinking of us. The photo shows Luke, Chris and Peter with the goodies. We really enjoyed them!

Nick’s gig On Easter Sunday I went to the O2 Arena with my sister to see Little Mix. I had looked forward to it for weeks and on that day, Little Mix were AWESOME! The stage and the lighting were great. In my opinion all their songs were amazing. The day was fabulous and I will remember that. By Nick Griggs

News on the U’s

The big news since the last column has been the departure of Richard Money who was sacked in October following a poor run of results.

Former Notts County Manager Shaun Derry was appointed in his place and has begun to rebuild the squad with the signings of strikers Ben Williamson from Gillingham and Jimmy Spencer from Notts County, whilst young goalkeeper Will Norris was recalled on loan from Braintree and has claimed the number one shirt with a series of good performances.

Results have improved and with nine games remaining we are just five points off the play-off places with wins against Leyton Orient, Wycombe Wanderers, York City and Yeovil. With a vital point away at league leaders Northampton Town thanks to an injury time equalizer from Jimmy Spencer - this sets up an exciting end to the season.

Race night - a winner!

Burwell Print’s first ever Race Night took place on a Saturday in April.

Held at the Mandeville Hall in Burwell the evening was a sell out with more than 80 people enjoying the horse racing and a fish and chip supper. A good time was had by all and the event raised a whopping

£684! A special thank you to our volunteer Geoff and his wife Sue for all their help and to everyone who came along that night especially the trainer John Berry who was our Compere for the evening and Amy Starkey and Rachel Hood who donated raffle prizes. Thank you!

Business as usual Gone but not The development of the swimming forgotten pool site will commence in July. The land on which the pool currently stands will be used to build a bigger carpark . Although this will mean major building works taking place close to the Print Centre we will be open as usual. The shrubs and plants along our entrance path to the right will be removed. We plan to save many of the smaller plants and re-pot them to sell. So maybe you could pick up a nice plant for your garden when you next visit Burwell Print!

Burwell’s swimming pool has been a valuable resource for many years and lots of children have learnt to swim here and have fond memories of fun times. We did not want this to go unmarked and so to celebrate the pool we plan to paint a mural on some of its exterior walls before it is demolished. Printers will be involved with the painting as well as members of other local groups as part of the Burwell Festival Week.
