Autumn 2014

Open Day Sunshine On a lovely sunny day at the beginning of September we held our annual Open Day. Customers, supporters and friends came to join us for a barbeque lunch. We sat outside eating, drinking and chatting. It was great to see old friends and welcome people new to Burwell Print. We put together a display of our most recent print work with examples of what we can do using the new machines- the electric creaser and perfect binder.

After lunch we had the certificate presentation to recognise Printers’ achievements over the past year. This is always the highlight of the day, with all our Printers enjoying their moment, with cheers and applause from family and friends. Thank you to everyone who came and helped make the day so special.

It’s a first! Burwell Print’s first ever Christmas Fayre. Yes, it’s true, Burwell Print is planning a Christmas Fayre!

Where? Mandeville Hall in Burwell.

Date and time? Saturday 6th December from 10 to 4pm.

Why? You might think, what’s this got to do with printing, but you know us, we’re a creative bunch and we want to get involved with our local community as much as possible. Not only will it give some Printers new work experiences on the day, it will also help to promote the work we do Monday to Friday, fifty weeks a year. And, at the end of the day, hopefully everybody will have had some fun and we will have raised some money!

What will be there?  

  

Over 20 stalls, each with some great gift ideas. The school choir is performing at 11am and a local singing group at 1.30 to entertain us. Printers will help to run a Tombola stall including a children’s Tombola. There will be mulled wine and refreshments. Face painting. AND a Santa’s Grotto – speaking of which, know any Santa’s looking for work this year? If yes, do let us know as we could use a bit more help in that department. We will of course have a Burwell Print stall selling our own merchandise including “Second String” jewellery and some new items you maybe wouldn’t expect!

We look forward to seeing you on the 6th

Tea or coffee? Thinking about Christmas and gift shopping– is there someone you struggle to buy for? We may have the ideal and inexpensive solution– a preference mug! Printed to order, the mug displays a persons preferred hot drink and how they like it e.g coffee with milk and 2 sugars. They are great for the workplace and home too. Priced at £6 you can place an order at the Print Centre or at the Christmas Fayre and collect your mug in time for Christmas.

New seasonal designs Here is one example of our new Christmas card designs for 2014. Printed on great quality 300gm card, with 5 cards and envelopes in a pack. All our cards are hand finished with Printers creasing, folding and packing them. Marvellous value at £2.50 per pack. Also don’t forget we can print your own designs and even your own message to save you the writers cramp from signing lots of cards!

Moving on Ashley has worked at Burwell Print for the last 10 years and in this time he has made lots of friends, developed endless skills and qualities that will stand him well in his new job. Ashley has always been involved in all aspects of both work and social activities taking place at Burwell Print. Ashley was often happy to dress up and join in the fun at Burwell Carnival or boogie away at our fund raising disco, especially enjoying our various day trips out.

Ashley has grown in self-confidence, showing great maturity over the last year, with the many major changes in his life. Ashley will be missed by all printers, staff and volunteers but we wish him well in his new job and look forward to catching up with Ashley in the future. Jane.

Josh and the Farm Josh, one of our Printers, felt he was ready for a new challenge and to make some changes to his working week. Josh made the decision to leave Onward Enterprises in Elveden and try something new. Josh chose to go to the Millennium Farm at Chevington, near Barrow. The farm has a variety of animals and grows vegetables. This is an ideal setting for Josh as he is a keen animal lover. Josh goes to the farm on Wednesdays. His day is filled with caring for the animals, feeding the horses, pigs, goats and sheep. The farm also keeps chickens so Josh helps collect their eggs. During the day Josh also walks the dogs that live on the farm, his

favourite is called “Big Ben”. Josh said “I like being at the farm with the animals. My favourites are the goats, I like to feed them.”

All change: Trustees update

Following this year’s Annual General Meeting held on 18th September, there have been some changes to the roles of the Trustees, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to bring readers up-to-date. After three years, Mary Hammond has stood down as Chair. Everyone involved with Burwell Print would like to thank Mary for all her hard work, commitment and enthusiasm in this challenging role. Mary will stay on the Board of Trustees and continue to work with the Employment and Fundraising groups. Having served as the Treasurer for the last two years, I have stepped down from that role and taken up the position of Chair. I was introduced to the Print Centre by my wife Helen in 2012, who had already been working for several years as a volunteer. I am delighted to report that the role of Treasurer has been filled by

Giles Cox who joined as a Trustee two years ago, and has been part of the Finance Group. Tony Estall retains his role as Vice Chair and Hazel Williams MBE, Martin Ley and David Martin will also continue as Trustees. Our final board member, Jan Clay has moved away from Burwell. Jan will remain a Trustee and continue her involvement in the Fundraising group and has been appointed Company Secretary. I am delighted to take up the role of Chair and to work with our excellent team of Staff, Printers, Trustees and Volunteers. There are of course challenges ahead, but I am sure that by all working together we can secure the future of our Print Centre for years to come. John Smith, Chair of Trustees.

Thank you We want to say a huge thank you to the extremely kind person who anonymously donated £100 after reading about the vandalism to our tomato plants. We are also grateful to our volunteer Nigel, whose daughter- in-law who gave us lots of seeds.

Thank you St Mary’s Church, Burwell For many years we have borrowed a barbeque from a Burwell family, (the Rawlinsons) for our social events and celebrations for which we have been extremely grateful. However, we thought it was about time we had our own and one that we could lend out to other local groups. So, we approached St Mary’s church Burwell and through their Parochial Church Counsel they donated the money for us to buy one!

Christmas fun The Printers came up with two options to celebrate the festive season this year, bowling or a Christmas lunch. Lucy designed a voting slip on the computer and supported Printers to vote. The result was close but bowling was the most popular. We are now planning the trip and looking at a suitable date. We’ll let you know how we get on.

Once again, thank you very much. Sue.

We’re millionaires! Chris O’ takes monthly meter readings of both our Konika Minolta and colour Xerox printers. The latest figures show we are averaging over one million clicks per year on the black printer! That means we have printed more than one million items, a mix of magazines, newsletters and booklets not to mention customers photocopying of letters, plans, the list goes on and on. Seeing those numbers written down really affirms how busy the Print Centre has become. A big thank you to all our customers for making us millionaires!
