Burwell Community Print Centre Newsletter
December 2013
A Day to Remember Our 25th Anniversary Celebration certainly was a day to remember. Weeks of planning and preparations came together, with Printers past and present, friends and supporters and made a wonderful day. We greeted our guests with welcome drinks followed by a barbeque. The music group Music Builds Communities really got the party started, involving us playing along with Boom Wackers. The Timeline was on display as well a quiz with photographs of familiar faces at Burwell Print from 25 years ago– some of us haven’t changed a bit! Chris said “The Timeline project had become a labour of love. I was really pleased with how it all came together. On the day guests gave me more information on Burwell Print’s history so I was able to add it to the Timeline.”
The afternoon continued with live music from local band Spectrum which got people up and dancing. Our volunteer, Julie said about the event “a unique day which will be remembered by everyone present to celebrate a special charity.” We finished the day with 25 silver balloons being released into the sky. Ann Alexander said of the event “Thank for a lovely time and 25 happy years”.
What’s new on the web Our web site has a new look. It is now more colourful and interactive. It is a work in progress, but some changes have already been made. The facility for customers to send us large files of their work is still on the website but has been rebranded from “you send it” to its new name “Hightail”.
We are planning a new way of subscribing to our special offers so we can email customers and keep them up to date with our latest promotions. Secondly there will be a way of donating money directly to Burwell Print. The website will also have links to watch our new Print Centre film. Something else new and exciting in the pipeline is our online shop! We plan to sell Second String jewellery, the cookery sets and some other merchandise via our Facebook page.
Customers will be able to look at photographs of the jewellery and click on a link to purchase online then choose to either collect from the Print Centre or have sent in the post. Printers will be heavily involved in this new venture and its processes. From checking for online sales to packing items and taking orders to the Post Office for posting. So why not avoid the shop queues this season and buy some gifts online.
Burwell Print goes global! An existing customer of Burwell Print recommended us to the USAF Base in Mildenhall who were looking to print a newsletter. The publication is for their education professionals and is sent to various worldwide destinations including Germany, Brussels and Cuba! The customer was very pleased with the newsletter and we look forward to printing it again.
Village magazines
The number of villages which we print magazines for has increased to nine. We are now printing Moulton Matters, the new name for Moulton News. Most weeks we print a village magazine, some are monthly, others bi-monthly and a few quarterly. The production of a magazine involves everyone a the Print Centre.
After the cover and pages are printed colour inserts are sometimes added then the pages divided into separate magazines by Printers. These are fed into the booklet maker to be stapled, folded and trimmed. Finally the magazines are rolled, counted and packed into boxes. Amazingly we print 37,056 village magazines a year! And that figure doesn't include the other magazines we print for societies and groups. Village magazines really are vital to our business, they enable Printers to have a varied work experience whilst they are part of creating a magazine for their local community.
Welcome!
James is the latest Printer to join the team. James lives in Mildenhall and came to us from college in the summer. James has settled in really well and is enjoying the work. James is a huge West Ham fan and likes to chat about football in his lunch break.
Nigel was introduced to Burwell Print through Geoff, who has volunteered with us for many years. “ I have been coming to Burwell Print since August. I really enjoy working with everyone. I get a lot from volunteering and offering my help and support.” Not many people know this...but Nigel has climbed Mount Kilimanjaro!
Very recently Thomas became our latest volunteer. Thomas comes from California, USA. Thomas is an engineer based at USAF Mildenhall and lives in Burwell. Thomas heard about Burwell Print from his neighbour, following a visit to see what we do he now volunteers Tuesday afternoon.
Elaine is our new Finance Assistant who has worked with disabled people for many years and recently retrained in book keeping. Elaine said “I have been warmly welcomed and thoroughly enjoy working in such a friendly place.”
‘Tis the season to be busy The Print Centre has been a hive of activity this month. We are very busy with the usual Christmas rush of printing cards, gifts and calendars. In addition to all that we are designing and printing our own cards to sell at the Christmas Indoor
Market being held at The Brook, Soham. Our jewellery project, Second String, has produced some beautiful jewellery ideal for Christmas presents and Jane’s new look baking sets will also be on sale.
Always learning
As we have so many Christmas cards to make at the moment everyone has been lending a hand. Up until recently Josh hadn’t used the creaser (this machine makes a crease in the card to give a perfectly neat fold). Josh worries about trying something new but with support and encouragement Josh learnt how to use the creaser. He is now a dab hand at this job and has creased literally 100’s of cards! Well done Josh.
On the flip side of this, some of our Printers find using the hand creaser tricky. An answer to this is to use a creasing machine. The company which supplies several of our print finishing machines is currently lending us such a machine. Many Printers have used the creasing machine. Janet said “ This machine is very handy, I think it’s marvellous.” We’ll let you know in the next edition if we decide to buy it.
Children in Need There was no need to get dressed to come to work on Friday 15 November, you could stay in your pyjamas! Printers and staff all joined in the fun for Children in Need and raised a fantastic ÂŁ72.30. Well done to all those who wore their jimmy jams and a big thank you to everyone who donated.
