Burwell Print Gets Crafty We have been thinking of ways to expand and develop our business. As featured in the May edition of Printer’s Progress, one idea was to have a jewellery project. Not only to boost our income and make jewellery when we are less busy with print work, but to show our customers how versatile we can be. Vikki makes jewellery at home and so shared her skills with Printers and staff, showing us how to make bracelets, earrings and necklaces. We’ve appropriately named the project Second String, which was Sue’s idea and Sarah has designed us a stylish logo.

Over the past months Printers have made some fabulous pieces of

jewellery and really enjoyed learning something new. Selling mainly from our display area here at Burwell Print we decided to expand our horizons so we had a stall at Burwell’s Craft Fair in November.

Everyone was involved with the preparation for this event. As well as jewellery we designed and produced several new products including christmas cards and notebooks, calendars, greeting cards and christmas bags. Our earring cards had seasonal motifs which were very popular with the customers as were our Christmas cards designed

by Sarah and our work experience student Iona.

The day was very successful, Vikki, Jane and Mel ran the stall. “We were really busy and sold lots of things, customers really liked our range products” said Vikki. We were so enthused by the reactions and success we have since taken part in another craft fair, at The Fox at Burwell, total sales£300!

Mugs Mugs Glorious Mugs! The mug machine was not printing as it should, so we have bought a new one. This proved to be excellent timing, as since the new machine arrived we have had two big orders for mugs. Fellow social training enterprises, Rowan and Darwin Nurseries have had mugs printed with their own designs. Rowan’s mugs have images of their artwork on them and the Darwin Nursery mugs have their logo. Learning to use the mug

machine is Steven King’s target so he has been getting lots of experience. Steven said, “I enjoyed printing mugs with Jane. We did loads, it was good”

The process of making mugs involves Printers in many ways; unpacking and checking a new delivery, applying the artwork around the mug, putting it in to the heat press, cooling the mug in cold water, then peeling off the artwork paper, quality checking and packing for the customer.

Workshop - Print your Mum a mug For Mother’s Day next year we shall be running a mug printing workshop here at Burwell Print on Saturday 23rd February. We are welcoming children to come in, accompanied by an adult, to draw and colour their own design, watch as the mug is printed then take it home with them. These will make lovely surprise gifts for mothers and

grandmothers. We will have different sizes of mugs and coffee cups to choose from and a gift box to put it in. The cost will be £6 per mug including the printing. The workshop will run from 9.30 to 12 noon. You can ring us to book a time to come in or just come along on the day.

Lots to look forward to in 2013 Guess what!

Tickets will go on sale by 1st March.

Next year the Print Centre will be celebrating its 25th birthday!

If you want to know more about our plans for 2013, or have any suggestions, please contact a member of the planning group: Melissa Waites, Sue Anderson, Jane Sulch or Tony Estall. Thank you.

To kick-off our celebrations we are having an Irish Barn Dance. A local group ‘Parson’s Nose Ceilidh Band’ will be singing and fiddling to get us all off our chairs! So, a date for your diary,

SATURDAY APRIL 27th from 7pm to10.30pm at Burwell Village College.

Welcoming New Faces

Luke recently started his trial period at Burwell Print. Luke finished college in the summer so Burwell Print is his first experience of work. Luke is settling in well and looks forward to working with us on

Wednesdays. Over the past few weeks we have been very busy which has given Luke the opportunity to try lots of different jobs including collating, labelling, rolling and working on the booklet maker. Luke is very motivated at work and likes to keep busy, so much so that he spends his lunch hour doing word searches.

Edward used to live in Peterborough until a few years ago when he moved to Fulbourn with his mum. Edward has lots of interests and hobbies including watching World War 2 documentaries, listening to world music, using his computer and the Internet, collecting memorabilia from Cornwall and watching Laurel and Hardy films. He is also a great supporter of Cambridge United Football Club and goes to their home games and

some of their away games when he can get there! In the summer Edward decided that he wanted to move on from Camtrust in Histon and he came to look at Burwell Print with his Personal Support Worker, Paul. He really liked the Print Centre and came back for a second visit and to complete an application form! Edward started working with us in August and loves it! He has settled in great and enjoys all the jobs he is given. Last week Edward was really pleased to be asked to go with Sue, Jane and John to an event at the Guildhall in Cambridge.

EEDAPP Conference The Printers who took part in the work swaps earlier in the year were invited to be the “meeters and greeters” at the EEDAPP conference. EDDAPP stands for East of England Disadvantaged Adults Pilot Programme. A short term project who’s aims were to look at services for disadvantaged adults.

The conference was held at Over Community Centre. The week before the conference Steven King and Usman went with Mel to the community centre for training for their role at the conference. Steven and Usman met with people from other social training enterprises, they were all to be known as “Exceptional Achievers” and would have certain responsibilities; Firstly, to greet the delegates as the entered the building, then to direct them to the registration desk. Secondly to direct the delegates to

the refreshments, the location of the toilets and lastly the conference room. The training session was excellent, everyone worked well together, helping each other understand their various jobs and the layout of the building. The actual conference was a day to remember, all the “Exceptional Achievers” really lived up to their title and did amazingly well.

They put to good use their training from the previous week, being well informed, polite and helpful to the delegates, many of whom congratulated them on what a fantastic job they were doing. The Exceptional Achievers were presented with certificates in the conference hall to a huge round of applause.

Shepreth Day Trip In October we shut the Print Centre for the day for our annual trip. The Printer’s voted to go Shepreth Wildlife Park on a coach. The Wildlife Park has some fabulous animals and is compact, so ideal to get around easily. We had a morning of exploring the park, then had a break and ate our packed lunches in the barn. After lunch we went into the bat house which was amazing if a little un-nerving as the bats flew freely around the building, sometimes very close to your head!

Then we watched the owl display. A friendly keeper took out two owls which flew around the display area. The Keeper told us lots of interesting facts about owls. Helen had her camera and took some great photographs of the animals. We put these to good use and printed the images to make packs of A6 cards to sell. James said “ It was a really good day out. My favourite animals were the tigers.”

Can you guess which animal this is? Answer. Lesser Spotted Spectacles! Mark’s glasses fell into the water. A kindly Keeper fished them out.

See us on Facebook We are now on Facebook. Have a look at our page to keep up to date with what is happening at the Print Centre.

Our Christmas Party On 17th December we held our Christmas Party at the Exservicemen’s Club in Burwell. All the Printers, Volunteers and staff were invited. After a buffet lunch we had a lovely time dancing to Christmas songs and disco music. Father Christmas even came along

and gave all the Printers a well earned present after a year of hard work. Martin said “ I enjoyed the party, it was nice to be with all my friends.”

And finally, we would like to wish all our customers and supporters

a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year
