KEEP CALM AND
CARRY ON CELEBRATING …. and more celebrations to look forward to - on Saturday 16th November we have a Wine Quiz and Improvised Comedy Night. A light-hearted quiz run by Cambridge Wine Merchants followed by a comedy show by Cambridge Improv Factory. Also, we are planning to end this 25th year with an 80’s themed night in April 2014.
We danced the night away The Ceilidh to kick off our 25th Anniversary celebrations was a huge success! We sold 131 tickets. A great mix of people came along and it was great to see so many families and young people. The ceilidh band, Parson’s Nose, did a great job and people were eager to get up and join in the dances. We had a fund-raising raffle with some fantastic prizes donated buy local businesses and supporters of Burwell Print.
Thank you to everyone who supported this event and worked so hard to make an evening to remember.
Re-Creation visit Earlier this year Vikki made contact with a project in Cambridge. Recreation makes jewellery and other items, such as coasters and table lamps, literally, out of what we consider to be rubbish! Vikki and Mel went along with Steven, Lucy, Alex and Julie to visit. We found very welcoming staff and members who showed us the techniques they use to make the stuff we throw away into beautiful jewellery. Ring pulls from drink cans are used and linked together with ribbons to make bracelets, old
bicycle inner tubes cut and threaded with broken jewellery to make contemporary necklaces. Our Printers sampled the jewellery making and created necklaces and keyrings. We plan to arrange a date for Recreation to visit us and run a jewellery making workshop.
New Products
Over the past few weeks we’ve been working on some new products. Jane had an idea to develop baking packs with easy to follow recipe cards. The result is an exciting new product to add to our range. Each pack comes in a brightly coloured cloth bag and contains two laminated recipe cards and the relevant cooking equipment such as cookie cutters, rolling pin and muffin cases. Jane said “ I’m really pleased the Printers have enjoyed making these packs and putting them together.”
Another new product is our children’s Holiday Journal Pack. This idea came from our Business Development Group. The pack is aimed at children, to record what they do during the summer and a great way to keep young people occupied during the long summer holidays.
The pack contains a ring bound journal with themed pages to record days at the beach and camping trips. There are spaces to draw pictures or stick in photographs and 2 sheets of summer motifs to cut out and stick in. There are 4 blank postcards to draw your own picture, a glue stick, scissors and a sheet of stickers. The packs are on sale here at Burwell Print and cost £7.50. They make a great birthday gift or simply a summer holiday treat.
Darwin Craft Fair We joined forces with fellow STeNG member, Darwin Nurseries to organise a craft fayre. It was held at Darwin Nurseries in June. We invited small businesses to have stalls and used the opportunity to try out the new products as well as sell our usual stuff. The stall looked great with a wide choice of merchandise.
We also did children’s face painting for the first time, which proved to be very popular. Not only was it a good money raiser, it attracted people to our stall. Parents were free to browse whilst their child’s face was painted, definitely something we’ll be repeating.
Bus Books Back in 2011, local Burwell resident, Jim Neale came in to see me at the Print Centre to ask if we could reedition a book about The Burwell & District Bus Company, which he had written and had originally been printed in 1978. He was very happy with the results and Jim followed this up with a new book entitled “My Favourite Coach”, which we designed and printed for him. Recently we
helped Jim with what has probably been the biggest design project the Print Centre has ever undertaken, a 98 page A4 book about the Cambridge Coach Company (ISBN 978-0-9575966-0-4). Please come and talk to myself or Sarah about any book design and layout projects you may have and we will be happy to help you. Vaughan Allanson
It’s all here in black and white About a year ago Vaughan and I started discussing replacing our black and white Xerox printer, which we use to print all our parish magazines and the majority of our general photocopying. It was nearly four years old and we started to look around at what was being offered. Technology doesn’t stand still and the latest machines new features, so we came up with a wish list of functions we would like in an ideal world. Sue and I visited Konica Minolta in Milton Keynes to look at their printers and talked to Xerox suppliers about a new Xerox printer.
After a lot of deliberation we decided to change from Xerox to Konica Minolta, as it offered us everything and more form our wish list, the new machine arrived in May. The printer has lots of different
features including a touch screen and it talks! The machine lets us know when paper is about to run out and finish printing. It also has a Printer friendly hole punching and stapling function. Over the past weeks Printers, volunteers and staff have had training and opportunity to use the new machine. Tracy said “ I like the new printer. I have done some copy work for a customer on it.” Chris O’Neill
Phantom float wins us first prize!
The theme for Burwell Carnival this year was West End musicals and theatre. We chose The Phantom of the Opera for our float, not only because many of our Printers are familiar with the musical but because the show is also celebrating 25 years. The Printers, with the support of
Sarah, Vaughan, Elliott and Geoff did and amazing job of decorating the float. The judges were also very impressed as we won Best Adult Float for the second year running. Mark said, “I had a lovely day. I enjoyed dressing up and waving at everyone.”
Lights, camera action! This week filming began to create a short film about Burwell Print, to show what we do and mark our 25th year. It’s been an exciting time having Dan here, who’s making the film and many of our supporters coming in specially to take part. We are grateful to Newmarket Lions who enabled us to commission the film with their donation of 1000 guineas– Thank you!
The premier of the film will be at our 25th Celebration on 14th September, another reason to come along!
