A Message from

Matt Alderton

Owning your own business is an adventure and can be highly rewarding. As an owner of businesses both large and small, I understand the many challenges business owners face operating their business. I have been a business owner for over a decade, have experienced many ups and downs and have learned an incredible amount through experience. One thing above all I have taken away from my journey so far, is that you can’t do it alone. To be successful requires being around the right people, and having the right influences in your life to help you achieve success. This applies to all the relationships in our lives. As human beings, we are the average of the seven people we spend the most amount of time with. This means, if we want to be successful, we need to spend time with people who are successful, who have had more success than we have had to date, and learn from them. As I have built my various businesses, I have spent time around some incredible people. People such as John Maxwell, Terry Hawkins and Les Brown, as well as experts across various fields and industries. I can directly link my successes and failures to the people and influence they have had on my business and life. I started Bx to help business owners connect with experts within the business arena. Knowing first-hand the advantages of being connected with and mentoring with the right people, I knew this was pivotal to the success of other business owners as well. In Australia, the 1 in 2 businesses fail in their first 12 months, and 9 out of 10 will fail in the following 9 years. These are disturbing statistics. What is even more disturbing, is that it is usually a result of the business owner not having the experience, expertise and support required to be successful in their enterprise. My personal mission is to reverse this statistic. I have created a support system for business owners, to enable them to achieve success. I have done this through our free events - Bxponential, educational platforms and our BxNetworking for Business meetings. I encourage you to share your experience with your friends and business networks. The more people that connect with us and our events, the more people we can help achieve success. One lesson I have learned in business and life is that winning and success are not the same thing. For you to win, there must also be losers. For you to be truly successful, means helping as many others as possible achieve success. The more people you help achieve success, the more successful you will in turn become. The Bx Business xCellence Awards and xMas party is an xClusive Event for BxNetworking Members to showcase the outstanding performance of businesses and Bx Team Members from throughout the year. Last years event was held on Saturday 17th November and was a night of xcitement and xuberance! Held at the lavish Horsley Convention Centre, business owners from across Sydney and Canberra came together to celebrate 2018, and what a night it was. Businesses complete a comprehensive multiple-choice questionnaire and are ranked against other businesses of the same category, and finalists are selected from the best entries. Finalists are then invited to complete a detailed business review with a series of questions on topics such as marketing, operations, people and leadership, sustainability, and community engagement.

NETWORKING WITH A DIFFERENCE by Laurene McKenzie When it comes to networking, you can create powerful results if you approach things a little differently to the norm. Here are some tips to help you maximise the return on time and investment in your networking efforts.

CONNECT Represent the brand of you effectively-every time! The way you present yourself has an impact and every time you meet someone you are leaving some level of impression. In terms of networking, it is all about the relationships you create and how memorable you are so when people are ready to buy or recommend, you are front of mind. Take a different approach to the norm at your networking events. Most people have been conditioned to approach networking in a transactional way and purely as sales opportunities. For long-term success, thinking in a relationship-based, transformational way will deliver results above and beyond - you’ll establish significant, memorable connections. Think abundantly - remember, connection opportunities occur outside your networking events too. Social media provides the perfect platform to position yourself as a connecter. Like, comment and share social media posts Facebook groups regularly have members asking for recommendations - take the time to communicate those with people you know they relate to

Share other marketing and business development prospects such as Tenders and PR opportunities. This again is a powerful way to remain on the radar outside of your traditional networking events and potentially create reciprocal opportunities for you

ENGAGE Always be prepared and ready for your chance to give a pitch when the opportunity presents itself. Take some time to think about what points you would like to communicate before you attend your events. Be able to describe what do you do succinctly, who and how you help clearly. Taking the time to refine this and continually self-reflect on how this lands for your audience gives you and opportunity to always leave a positive and memorable impression on people in the room. When you join and commit to a networking group it’s essential that it takes priority in your diary without fail. Often I see people prioritise clients over attending their regular networking meetings. I would suggest you can create a win/ win situation by offering other times in your diary to clients and still attending your networking events. Always deliver what you promise and aim to follow up within 48 hours. When your network realise you are someone they can rely on you are well on the way to establishing yourself as someone with value to your community.

NURTURE Be a leader and establish referral partnership opportunities. Identify people you can partner with who are non-competing and who you can recommend to your own clients and vice versa. The key to creating ongoing strong opportunities with these referral partners is to have regular conversations to see how you can help each other. These conversations create strong relationsips over time, and mean you remain front of mind with your network. One way you can move into a transformational phase is to offer to add value to your network before selling your wares. This helps you establish trust, familiarity, authority and appeal, which will position you well in terms your peers. This does seem counter intuitive however over time it does translate to even more clients coming your way. When you’re at events, do the unexpected. People don’t expect you to offer to connect them with others straight off the bat - even though that’s ultimately what you’re all there for - so do it! Ask them who they would like to connect to, or what you can do to help and make it happen. That’s networking at its finest! By employing many of these tips, I’ve become known as the “Super Connector” and have take my networking success to a whole other level by helping people connect with, engage and nurture their networks.

Social media is constantly changing and so is the way that we use each different platform. Despite its ever-evolving nature, social media isn’t going anywhere anytime soon and your business should be jumping on board to see where it could take you. Different social media platforms work well for different businesses, so it’s important to take the time to consider each platform carefully to decide which one will work best for your business.

Facebook Many of us have our businesses listed on Google – after all, it is one of the first places potential customers will look. Facebook allows you to provide all the usual information – business hours, location, descriptions, reviews and images of premises etc – with the added bonus of interactivity. Facebook lets your customers interact with you through events, photos, uploading their own reviews and messaging you directly to get their answers. Facebook is a great hub for interactivity and, after Google and your website, it’s one of the first places your potential customers will go to find out more about your business.

Instagram Instagram is especially useful if your business is product-based. A well-shot photo of your product may just catch the eye of a potential customer. The platform relies heavily on hashtags, which means that your image has the potential to make a big splash in the Instagram world. Out of all the popular social media platforms, Instagram provides the most scope for creativity, which means that you can let your business personality shine through visually. Instagram also offers business pages which means you can gain insight into how your followers are responding to your content and it provides an option for your followers to easily send you an email to find out more.

LinkedIn LinkedIn is useful for building your professional network and sharing news about your business. The platform is perfect when you’re looking to grow your business and find new staff and it’s also a great tool to check up on your competitors! LinkedIn also provides rooms for articles - formerly known as Pulse - an extension of the platform which allows you to write your own long-form content and share with your network – this is perfect, especially if your own website doesn’t support a blog. There are plenty of other platforms out there that could be right for your business. Snapchat and Twitter have been useful for businesses that like to update immediately or show behind the scenes information, while YouTube is great for sharing videos highlighting events or even create ‘how-to’ videos for your products. Using social media is all about getting your name out there, growing both your professional network and your customer network and, most of all, having a bit of fun with your business.

Like most entrepreneurs, I started my journey burning the candle at both ends, working countless hours and never having any downtime. After my children were born, I realised I needed to find more balance so I could enjoy spending time with them without being distracted by my business. Together with my wife, I decided that even though work would often take me away from my family, I would structure my life and my company so we had quality time together. Fast forward a few years and I now take at least four overseas trips per year with my family. My children are older and able to appreciate the different cultures we experience together, and we love travelling and exploring the world. It sounds ideal, and for us, it is. We have now visited over 70 countries and have no plans to stop. However, it does take some careful planning and organisation to set up your business so it can run without you for weeks at a time. How to travel the world while running your business 1.

Implement a CRM

Your Customer Relationship Management (CRM) system and marketing automation will keep in touch with your customers, even when you’re not around. These act as your 24/7 sales and customer care team by responding to emails, generating leads and closing deals while you’re away from the office. 2.

Communicate online

I’m never completely out of touch for long and often spend two or three hours online after a day of sight-seeing. My team and I keep in contact with Google Hangout meetings and online chat software. We also use Voxer, a handy app which acts as a walkie talkie. As long as you have an internet connection, you can send a voice message to anyone, anywhere. 3.

Migrate to the cloud

The days of emailing files back and forth or only being able to access certain business information on one computer are gone, replaced with software that only needs a username and password. Leverage shared drives, task management software and smartphone apps so you can log on whenever you need to. You can also do this with your accounting and reporting tools to track your business progress when you’re

4. Build a great team Your business needs to be in the hands of people you trust when you’re not there. It takes time to find and train people who are motivated self-starters but once you’re onto a good thing, don’t let go! Reward your staff and make them feel valued so they continue to achieve great results when you’re away.

5. Stop micromanaging A business owner’s biggest mistake is saying “Nobody can do it the way I can”. If you want more time to travel or relax, you need to let go of small tasks by training other people to take over. What’s more, train yourself to allow others to make decisions on your behalf. There are plenty of things which don’t need your daily input.

6. Introduce systems and processes Essentially what you’re doing as a good manager is figuring out how to replace yourself within the business. To do this, document all the tasks which are easy to teach to your team. Make videos, infographics or voice memos and store them on your intranet. This way, nobody has to ask how to complete work-related tasks. 7. Figure out how to sell at scale If you’re a service provider, you may feel as though there’s no way your business can operate without you. In this case, it’s time to take on your first crew member. Another option is to invest in the creation of an instruction manual, tool or online training course. These can sell while you’re away to continue generating income.

8. Touch base often The incredible times we live in mean we can keep in touch from almost anywhere. When you’re on the road, don’t be inaccessible. It is your business after all and your staff may feel frustrated if they can’t reach you for weeks at a time. 9. Be mindful of time zones It’s not fair to make your staff jump on a call with you at 9 pm their time just because you’re in a different country. Respect their working hours and adjust your schedule to accommodate them at the right times. 10. Schedule in-person catch ups When you’re back ‘on the ground’, create opportunities for face time with your staff so they feel valued. Set regular KPIs so things don’t slip while you’re away but reward your team for achieving them—you’d be stuck spending a lot more time in the office without them after all.

Getting Ready to Change Starts With the Decision to Do So by Matt Alderton It’s time for some tough love. We’re more than halfway through the year, and no doubt many of you had big plans for how you wanted this year to be different. This is the year you’re going to achieve new success, reach your financial goals and grow your business by x percent. Fantastic, I love the positivity and determination.

But, are you actually doing anything about it? Are you achieving it? In the past year of coaching business owners, I’ve noticed an alarmingly common pattern. Clients come to me full of ideas and talk about how they want to achieve x, y and z. Yet, when it comes time to commit to attending coaching calls or personal development events and to putting new ideas and approaches into practice, there is resistance. “I don’t have time to make the webinar this month,” they say. “But we’ve always managed things this way,” comes the reply to an alternative suggestion.

Keep doing what you’ve always done, and you’ll keep getting the same results Sorry guys, but success isn’t going to magically land in your lap. If you want to get different results, you need to be prepared to change your approach and try new ways of doing things. Ultimately, change is a choice. You need to decide to change direction or change what you are doing. You need to be willing to push through any barriers and discomfort that might be in your way. Because ultimately, change is inevitable, whether you actively seek and embrace it or not. Your business is not operating in a vacuum. Competitors are constantly progressing and threatening your territory. Technology advances and enables new ways of doing things that you hadn’t imagined just a short time ago. By doing things the same way, at best your business will get the same results and stagnate; at worst, you will become irrelevant and eventually obsolete. Imagining the outcomes of not em-bracing change can sometimes be the motivator you need.

The Three P’s of Change Instigating a change in our lives involves focusing on three key areas: the people around us and who we interact with; our psychology and the programming of our mind; and our physiology, including how we think, act and express ourselves. People: Seek out mentors to learn from and be open to different ways of thinking. Spend time with people who display the attributes to wish to develop in yourself, and identify successful people whose behaviour and habits you can model from. Psychology: Remember to take time to pause, stop and clear your mind. Focus on the right now, not the past and the future. Taking slow, deep breaths can help to bring you back to the moment, rather than worrying about what you should have done or should do later. Physiology: Try visualising the behaviour and results that you want to achieve, and then articulate this as positive facts in the present tense. Physically, act and move the way you would if you were achieving what you wanted. Are you ready to stop talking about making changes and start making them? With this you can refine and retarget for a more effective outcome.
