A Message from Matt Alderton

Owning your own business is an adventure and can be highly rewarding. As an owner of businesses both large and small, I understand the many challenges business owners face operating their business. I have been a business owner for almost two-decades, have experienced many ups and downs and have learned an incredible amount through experience.

most amount of time with. This means, if we want to be successful, we need to spend time with people who are successful, who have had more success than we have had to date, and learn from them.

As I have built my various businesses, I have spent time around some incredible people. People such as John Maxwell, Terry Hawkins and Les Brown, as well as experts across various fields and industries. I can directly link my successes and failures to the people and influence they have had on my business and life.

- Bxponential, educational platforms and our BxNetworking for Business meetings.

I encourage you to share your experience with your friends and business networks. The more people that connect with us and our events, the more people we can help achieve success.

One lesson I have learned in business and life is that winning and success are not the same thing.

ne thing above all I have taken away from my journey so far, is that you can't do it alone. To be successful requires being around the right people and having the right influences in your life to help you achieve success. This applies to all the relationships in our lives. As human beings, we are the average of the seven people we spend the

I started Bx to help business owners connect with experts within the business arena. Knowing first-hand the advantages of being connected with and mentoring with the right people, I knew this was pivotal to the success of other business owners as well. In Australia, 1 in 2 businesses fail in their first 12 months, and 9 out of 10 will fail in the following 9 years. These are disturbing statistics. What is even more disturbing, is that it is usually a result of the business owner not having the experience, expertise and support required to be successful in their enterprise. My personal mission is to reverse this statistic. I have created a support system for business owners, to enable them to achieve success. I have done

For you to win, there must also be losers. For you to be truly successful, means helping as many others as possible achieve success. The more people you help achieve success, the more successful you will in turn become.

Thanks and see you at brekkie!

It’s no secret that creating a content strategy can be a hefty task - there are spreadsheets, calendars and notes flying everywhere. The process can be a tricky one and when you can’t see the immediate results, you might feel as though creating a strategy isn’t worthwhile.

So, what do you really stand to gain from putting a content and communications strategy in place?

Actionable Ideas

You know that little space in your head where you keep all those good ideas you have in the early hours of the morning? How often do delve into that space, pull out one of those ideas and action it? For the more organised amongst us, it might be fairly regularly, but for many of us, those ideas will sit, forgotten, perhaps forever.

A content strategy changes that bad cycle forever. It gives you a space to put your ideas, to develop them and to fit them into a schedule where all your ideas can work together. Not only that, but never will you have an idea and not know what to do with it. Your strategy provides you with a framework to turn all your ideas into powerful content.

A Streamlined Message

Putting content out is all about sending your message out into the world for potential customers to find you - if you haven’t got your message straight, your audience could be left confused. Your content strategy allows you to make sure that all your content - whether it be articles, videos, or other marketing collateral - works together seamlessly.

The little details are what matters when it comes to your content and the easiest way to make sure everything works together is by implementing your content strategy.

More Time

Perhaps the biggest benefit of a content strategy is creating one, central place where all your team members can be clear on what role they should be playing and when they’re supposed to be completing communications-related tasks.

Your team can also know exactly what their fellow team members need to be doing too, so they know who to direct their questions and suggestions - taking the pressure off you and leaving you free to get on with your own tasks for the day.

Yes, content strategies can be daunting to set up and it might be difficult setting aside the time to get it started but in the long run, all that effort pays off big time.

Season 2 of the Bx Podcast is well into production, and it promises to be packed full of business advice & tips, authentic storytelling, and xPert insights. Hosted by Ryan Fowler, Owner & Storyteller of Orion Media Group, the focus will be [SPOILER ALERT!] on you, our Bx members! Find out how you can get involved below.

As a business owner, you are often the marketer of your business, and it's up to you to build your audience, strive for niche authority and become an influencer. Yes, that's right, an influencer! Before you run in the other direction, it's easier than you think and probably a lot more fun. It's called guest podcasting, where you appear as a guest on established podcasts and share your expertise. Pound for pound, guest podcasting is one of the most effective ways to produce so many wins with limited time investment. If you've been on the fence or are thinking about taking the step to guest podcasting, these benefits will convince you to jump in feet first!

10 Reasons Why Guest Podcasting is the Best Form of Content Marketing!

#1: Access to a pre-made and highly engaged audience; with preparation, you can reach hundreds to thousands of highly targeted listeners.

#2: Easier and far less time-consuming than guest blogging; one of the most popular forms of content marketing.

#3: Create meaningful connections with the podcast host, xPerts, and the audience.

#4: High content production value; Bx puts a lot of effort into production, including professional sound, editing, and creating custom web graphics.

#5: Unlimited cross-amplification; highly shareable piece of content resulting in more likes, shares, tweets, and traffic.

#6: Free long-form blog posts; transcribe the show and post on your site as a blog post.

#7: Increased dwell time; embed video on your website to help your SEO efforts.

#8: Create trust badges; use "as seen on the Bx Podcast" eye candy for your website.

#9: Online reviews; repurpose these into highly valuable testimonials for your website.

#10: Opportunity to generate sales; you can get leads by being an informative guest.

As a Bx Member, you have the unique opportunity to apply to share your expertise to a highly targeted and engaged audience.

"Being a guest on a podcast gives you the opportunity to share an insight into your expertise so listeners connect with you on a personal level to see you as the expert in your field." says Ryan Fowler, Orion Media Group & the Bx Podcast Host

No matter your level of guest podcasting experience, Ryan will work with you to ensure you are comfortable and generate the best results!

“I bring a relaxed, conversational style to the podcast with a genuine curiosity for what people do and how they help others. It’s my aim to ensure our guests feel supported throughout the entire process.”

Matt Alderton, CEO & Founder of Bx had the pleasure of interviewing Ita Buttrose AC, OBE. Ita is the most celebrated female journalist in Australian history. Her wealth of experience spans multiple industries, notably her roles as an Australian TV network chairperson, television and radio personality, author and former magazine editor, publishing executive, and newspaper journalist.

What do you think are the most significant gains we've had in women's rights and movements over the years?

In '76, when I went to the ANZ Bank and asked for a bank loan, the bank manager wouldn't give it to me because I was divorced and had two children, but, I reckon, I was one of the highest-paid women in Australia at that time. It was a different time, but we have an earning capacity now that we could not have imagined back in the day. So I think we've done quite well. Change takes time. We just have to keep pushing on.

You went through a lot of adversity. If someone was going through that now, what advice would you give?

Well, I had three brothers, and I never thought there was anything they could do that I couldn't do. So I came with the knowledge that I could do whatever boys could do, and I think that's a good lesson. I thought I had some ability and talent and was entitled to be there. I believed in myself. I really believed in myself. And I think that's a very important lesson for everyone, especially women who sometimes lack confidence and who often don't realise how good they are. I've often pushed women further and watched them achieve great things. I don't see why anyone should be stopped from doing what they've got their heart set on. I am entitled to be there. And I'm entitled to have a go, and I will tell myself that, and that's what I told myself, and nothing changed.

I am entitled to be there, and I am entitled to give it a go

You've said that advertising is important. For small businesses, what’s your top piece of advice for them to consider?

You've got to think of advertising as a necessary business expense, and I think you should get an expert. You've got to have somebody who understands what you're trying to do because sometimes you can create advertising that takes people by surprise. For instance, when I wrote a book on Australian etiquette. Penguin, my then-publisher, said to me, Look, we've got an idea for marketing. We think you should do a rap. I said no, I don't think so. Me, doing a rap? I don't know anything about rapping. In the end, that expert had a really good idea, and it worked.

What would you say to those who have a dream?

Go for it. If you've got a dream, go for it. No one's gonna give you permission. Sometimes you've got to take a risk. If you've got a big idea and think it's got legs, you've got to go and fight for it.

How often are we told to ‘dream big’, ‘reach for the sky’ and ‘make your dreams a reality’? These overused phrases may stir up motivation for some people, but even with the inspiration, it can be hard to know where to begin and how to tick off those big goals on our list. For many of us, our goals dissolve into failures. So how can we stop this cycle of dreaming big and failing big?

It is natural to be scared of big goals. Seeing them written down on a piece of paper is scary – because you’ll actually have to try and do something about it. We become unlikely to achieve the big goals, because we don’t want to start. We’re all lazy – it’s a common trait. Big goals require a lot of work and we shy away from that.

Most of all, we’re scared of failing. The bigger the goal, the bigger the failure and the more we will have to go back to our family and friends with our tail between our legs.

Despite our fear of failure and our laziness, we continue to write down big goals and we continue to ignore our most obvious path to success – small goals.

Most big goals will have obvious smaller steps you can take to start moving towards success. Think of your big exams at the end of high school; no one in their right mind would have walked into the exam room with absolutely no knowledge of what they were about to face. There were preliminary exams to prepare you, study days and classes, not to mention the 13 years of schooling prior to putting your pen to paper on that day, leading you towards the big goal of passing your final exams.

Each day you came to school, ready to learn, was a day that you moved closer towards that goal. It seems simple – that’s because it is.

Many of us tend to get in the bad habit of performing one big push at the end to try and get our goals over the line. Unfortunately, most of us fail when we do that. It’s actually a lot easier and more effective to do a lot of little things more often.

Smaller goals also work in favour of our fear of failure. The possibility of failing a small goal is much less daunting than failing a big one and there is always the option of trying again tomorrow. When we do succeed, which is more likely since these small goals are attainable, we can celebrate our wins and gain the momentum we need to tackle the big goal.

Write down your big goal and then spend some time breaking it down; what can you do over the course of a year, a quarter, a month or a day to keep moving towards that goal.

At the end of the day, our big and small goals need to work together to get us where we want to go. Our big goals may not get off the ground if we don’t put the work in and get momentum but our small goals won’t get us to where we want to go if we don’t have a big goal so we can see where we’re going.

One of the major ways to achieve your business goals is to ensure you’re kept accountable. It can be informal - such as with a peer in your networking sphere - or more structured through a mentor. Start achieving your business goals, get in touch with Bx on 1300 068 229, or find out more about what we do here https://bxnetworking.com/

 Why do so many of our big goals fail? Could it be that we’re not dreaming small enough?

 Thinking small could be the way to achieving our big goals - how do we tap into the power of small steps?

 If you don’t achieve that big goal you have in mind, can you try again tomorrow? If not, it might be time to start thinking smaller. Small goals hold the antidote to our fear of failure.
