A Message from

Matt Alderton Owning your own business is an adventure and can be very rewarding. As an owner of businesses both large and small, I understand the many challenges business owners have in every aspect of operating their business. I have been a business owner for over a decade, and have experienced many ups and downs and have learned an incredible amount by the experience. One thing above all that I have taken away from my journey so far, is that you can’t do it alone. To be successful requires being around the right people, and having the right influences in your life to help you achieve success. This applies to all the relationships in our lives. As human beings, we are the average of the seven people we spend the most amount of time with. This means, if we want to be successful, we need to spend time with people who are successful, who have had more success than we have had to date, and learn from them. As I have built my various businesses, I have spent time around some incredible people. People such as John Maxwell, Terry Hawkins and Les Brown, as well as many experts across various fields and industries. I can directly link my successes and failures to the people and influence they have had on my business and life. I started my business Bx, to help business owners connect with experts within the business arena. Knowing firsthand the advantages in being connected with and mentoring with the right people, I knew this was pivotal to the success of other business owners as well. In Australia, the majority of small businesses, don’t even make it to five years. This is a disturbing statistic. What is even more disturbing, is that it is usually a result of the business owner not having the experience, expertise and support required to be successful in their enterprise. My personal mission is to reverse this statistic. I have created a support system for business owners, to enable them to achieve success. I have done this through our free events - Bxponential, One Day Business Masterclass, Bxplosive, through our Business for Life Program and through our national business networking breakfasts, lunches and dinners with BxNetworking. Talking To People Is Easy When It Is Your Focus Business is all about who you know, networks and conversations, but it is very hard to do any of those things unless you start talking to people. I know that depending on your upbringing will depend on how socialable and talkative you are, but even if this isn’t your norm, you can train yourself to change. Talking to others is a skill and it doesn’t have to be daunting or scary, the simple trick is focus on finding out more about the other person. When you get into conversations and all you are doing is asking questions, talking to others become easy. The problem is most people feel that they have to do the talking and that is why they don’t start conversations. Without conversations you can’t grow your network, you can’t meet interesting people that might be able to help you (or you help them) and you can’t find new opportunities. It is known that great sales people are great talkers, they understand that they need to be in conversations if they are going to create more sales. It is not a skill they were born with, but learnt because it was necessary. So what is the art to talking? Firstly, I believe you have to be interested in other people, you have to want to learn about them, find out more about them and actually care about what they have to say. If you are going into a conversation just to talk about yourself then you have missed the point. Next you need to be a good questioner, the more questions you ask the easier the conversation will be. If you are the questioner and want to leave the conversation or stop it, then you can simply stop asking questions. Finally, you need to find ways to add value to the conversation and the other person. Whether that is through some advice or an action item, you will be remembered if you can add value to that other person. Don’t forget that each person you speak to is another person in your network, another person you can call upon and possible another opportunity to do business with. If you’re not sure how to begin a conversation, why not start with something as simple as “ hi I’m (name) what is your name”, that then breaks the wall and you can then find a first question depending on the circumstances. Just remember the more conversations you have, the better your business will be.

On a beautiful evening last November Bx celebrated our inaugural Business xCellence Awards & xMas party. Held at the ever changing Bankstown Sports Club, we enjoyed a night of xceptional food & drinks, xemplarily company, xpressionate dancing and of course the xcellent awards presentation. Three ways content can drive your business Simply hearing the word ‘content’ can strike fear into the hearts of many small business owners. It seems impossible that in addition to keeping on top of the finances, the dayto-day operations and your staff, you also have to write articles or film videos; it all seems like far too much effort and it can be hard to see the benefits behind it all. Fortunately, all that effort isn’t wasted - there are three big ways that your content can keep your business moving forward: 1. Staying Relevant We’ve all seen it before - there are plenty of websites out there who have failed in keeping up with the times. Whether it’s been with the look and feel of their website design or in the content they’ve uploaded, being out of date is very off-putting for any potential customer. When you upload content regularly, it gives you a chance to comment on current issues within your industry or the world and to address things that are on the mind of your potential customers. You also have the opportunity to refresh old content by looking at it from a different angle or really hone in on an issue you’ve addressed vaguely before. All this shuffling and refining of your content means that you will always be up to date and you will always have the most relevant information.

Not only that, but it gives a great impression to your potential clients. Well-strategised content can make you appear ‘everywhere’! 3. Starting the conversation Your content is a way for you to showcase all that knowledge that you’ve been building up over the years. It’s also a way for you to tell your potential clients why your product or service is essential to them while also providing a clear call-to-action - all of this in one piece of content, without even leaving the comfort of your office chair. Think of content as your fuel as you head into all your new business adventures - forgetting to put fuel in or putting the wrong stuff in the tank could be disastrous and you won’t end up getting to where you need to go. But when you get it right and fill up regularly, you’ll keep moving forward. Powerful content is a breeding ground for engaging conversations that lead to sales - make sure your content is up to scratch so that you too can achieve this.

2. Keeping Active

It’s clear that content really does matter, even if it is a lot of effort. Put your best foot forward today and start using content to start powerful conversations and engage new clients. It works and it’s worth your time.

B-Pitch Perfect Business owners the world-around use networking as an effective resource for growing their business. To be an effective networker, you need to have a clear idea of your goals and objectives in relation to networking. If you are to be a successful networker, your objective is very simple: Build relationships with other business owners. Your goals on the other hand, are different to your objectives, and often this get confused. A savvy business owner will have a clear understanding of the outcome they are trying to achieve through networking. The goal you have for networking should be to increase the income in your business to achieve a return on your investment into networking. Your Goal: Generate additional sales for your business When I speak to business owners at networking events, I often get very wishy-washy answers when I ask them what their goals are. It is critical that you are clear on your goals, if you ever want to have any chance of achieving an ROI from your time and money invested into networking. Now there are many elements that go into being successful in a networking environment, however, one area that will significantly impact your ability to achieve your business goals is how effective your pitch is. At many networking events, you will have an opportunity to stand and deliver your 30/40/60 second pitch to the other attendees. This is your referral request, this is communicating with the other attendees the type of person you are trying to connect with. The person you are trying to connect with is typically referred to as your avatar, or your ideal client. This often confuses people, as what happens is, we think if we cast the net wide, we will capture more fish. The result is the opposite. The tighter we cast the net, the more specific we are with our referral request, the more leads/ referrals we will receive.

For example: “I am looking to connect with anyone in small business”

Try this: “I am looking to connect with accountants and financial planners” This request is very specific, and we can all think of people that have these businesses. We can probably think of one or two of both of these. Now it is easy for us to refer to you!

Make it easy for the audience! A successful referral request is done by working in the following elements: 1. Who you are: “Hi, I’m Matt Alderton from Bx” 2. What your business is: “ I am a business coach and specialise in small business expansion strategies” 3. Why you do what you do: “ Having been in small business for over a decade with over a dozen different businesses, I have seen the results of good decisions AND bad decisions. I have learned and implemented the strategies I coach on, and have taken several companies to 7-figure revenues. It is my passion to help small businesses avoid the mistakes and pitfalls I have faced in my business, and help all small businesses thrive in Australia.” 4. Who are you looking to connect with: “ I am looking to connect with business owners who have been operating for a year or more and are looking to grow, put on staff, and take their business to the next stage. Specifically, if you know a business owner who is in the health and fitness space - chiro’s, physios etc. We have achieved some great results for business owners in this space.” 5. How you can help them/ why the audience should connect you with their contacts “ By working with these types of clients, I am able to help them implement marketing, automation, operational, and profit strategies that allows them to take their business to the next level.

There are two issues with this very broad request, firstly, this will capture most of your audience in the referral request. Remember, we hate being sold to, and now you are selling to your audience. Your audience will switch off.

6. Remind everyone who you are again.

Secondly, the request is so broad that it is impossible for the average person to identify someone in their network outside of the room that fits this description. They can think of heaps of people generally, but not a person specifically.

If you follow this six-point system, you are guaranteed referrals. Is it that simple? Yes! However, there are a couple of tips that will ensure the above six points are pitch perfect.

First of all...here’s the NO, NO’s! • You are not selling to the room - pitch to people outside the room. When you pitch to the people in the room, they stop listening. You want to be connected with the people, that the people in the room know! • Avoid saying “Who here needs…” or “If you’re looking for…” - these are pitching to the room. • Avoid being too general with your ideal client. Be very specific. Top Tips to B-Pitch Perfect • Write it down - get it word for word • Practice it - practice at least 30 times! If you practice this 30 times OUT LOUD, you will be amazing! • Have your notes handy, but avoid reading it. You’re better off reading though, than getting it wrong! • Stand up, take a breath, and then start. I see so many people start their pitch while they are still in the process of standing up! Own the room when you speak. • Speak clearly and slowly. Often we speed up when we’re nervous. • Make it easy for the audience - be clear and very specific with your referral request. • Lastly, you are wanting referrals from people, but remember THEY WANT THEM TOO! Those that give referrals are 10x more likely to get referrals. To get bang from your buck at a networking event, ensure you get your pitch perfect. If you do, the referrals will come flooding in! How Is Fear Holding You Back Whenever I ask this questions I always seems to get the following response “I don’t have the money”, “I don’t have the time”, “I don’t have knowledge”, “I don’t have the skills”, “I don’t know the right people”, and after working with thousands of business people throughout the globe I’ve discovered that these things are not the deciding factors. Fear is the deciding and underlying factor depriving business people of the success and happiness they desire for themselves and the families. People often tell me “I don’t have fear, I’m fearless” yet the reality is that we all have fears which we must accept and admit, as when we fail to do so our fears can become very dangerous and destructive.

Recognising Fear Our fears can are also an indication that we are growing as we step from our comfort and and push ourselves to experience new environments, new situations and new challenges. Fears need to be identified and managed before becoming a problem and resulting in things like procrastination, self-doubt, laziness, failing to act, stress, anxiety and overwhelm, otherwise it will continue to hold us back from performing at our best.

Turning Fear Into Fuel The first step is to recognised the role negative thinking plays in feeding your fears. Things like “I’m not good enough”, “You can’t”, “You don’t deserve this”. And before you know it your negative thoughts will have overwhelmed you and will become a too great to tackle and take on. Now I’m not saying that you should ignore these things, however often we can be our own worst enemy.

Release The Breaks Being proactive and tacking your negative thoughts as soon as they present themselves is the key to success. Instead of allowing your thoughts to effect you personally and professionally and how you got about business and life, the key it to put your logical brain to work for you and rather then listening to yourself saying “I can’t do this”, “I’ll never be able to do that”. “I’m not good enough”, ask yourself “How can I?”, “What’s the best way for me to....”, and begin to imagine how amazing you will feel after you accomplish what you set out. Force your brain to work for you, “say it how you want it to be”.

Turning Fear Into Fuel Get Out Of Your Comfort Zone The comfort zone is slowly killing you whether you realise it or not, yet so many people strive to be comfortable. If you’ve allowed your comfort zone to rule you, you must learn to recognised this and seek to get out of it immediately.

Into Your Success Zone Do you remember a time when you took a chance and we’re successful? Do you remember how good it felt and how rewarding it was? Well it’s more than likely this was a time when you stepped out of your comfort zone and into your success zone! This doesn’t mean being reckless or making stupid decisions, however our life is often best lived when your outside of your comfort zone and in your success zone. Doing so will turn fear into fuel and excitement, accelerating you toward your success.

Face Your Fears The best was is use fear as fuel is to face it head-on. And you do this by staying motivated and focusing on what it is your truely want to achieve. Remember it not embarrassing to experience fear, it’s a part of life. However when you choose not to recognised your fears, it’s when they will hold you back so practice each and every day the act of stepping out of your comfort zone and into your success zone and begin recognising your fears. When you do this you will being turning your fears into the fuel you desire.
