Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre are operated by High Peak Theatre Trust, a registered charity run on an entirely not-for-profit basis. In order to present the artistic programme and staff the theatre, we rely on our major funders, High Peak Borough Council and Arts Council England (see right), substantial volunteer help (around 200 local people), our earned share of Box Office income, ancillary income such as bar sales, plus around ÂŁ200,000 annual fundraising (from concerts, regular donors, Cash Bonanza members, etc). Thank you if you help or support us in any way. The Theatre Trust is run by a Board of Trustee-Directors and a complement of paid staff and volunteers. The current Board members are: Clive Beattie (Chairman), Dr Beverley Carter Lady Jasmine Cavendish, Elizabeth Hitchin Louise Potter, Carol Prowse, Paul Rooney Keith Savage (nominee of High Peak Borough Council) John Scampion, Rosemary Stafford, Colin Sykes

Lady Jasmine Cavendish is also the Patron of the Trust, while Michael Williams and Bob Mulholland are the Vice-Patrons.

High Peak Borough Council has been a funder of the Opera House since 1979. The Council makes an annual grant towards our artistic and operating costs, and also gives financial assistance to the Buxton Festival and International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. The Council is also the owner of the Opera House & the Pavilion Arts Centre, and maintains the fabric of both buildings. The restoration & refurbishments of 1979, 2001 & 2007 were all partnership projects between Council and Trust, with significant funding from both.

Arts Council England has been a funder of the Opera House since 2003, making an annual grant towards our artistic costs, specifically the drama programme. ACE has also previously given financial support to our Live Music Festival, A to Z Festival, Education Officer post & Fringe Seasons, and also made capital grants to the 2001 refurbishment and the Pavilion Arts Centre project.

IMPROBABLE FICTION By Alan Ayckbourn Six aspiring authors meet on a winter’s evening to discuss their work…writers of romances and children’s literature who are struggling to start, a crime writer who can’t stop, plus a creator of science fiction, a librettist without a musical partner and the Writers’ Circle chairman, who produces instruction booklets. Before long, their various stories start to interweave, and it gets difficult to distinguish fiction from real life… Sharp comedy and affectionate satire characterise this zany, imaginative play, which premiered at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough in 2005 and toured nationally the following year.

THE BOHEMIANS - A NIGHT OF QUEEN Freddie Mercury, Brian May, John Deacon & Roger Taylor formed Queen in 1971. In the next two decades, the band released a total of 18 number one albums, 18 number one singles, and 10 number one DVDs. It is estimated that they have sold around 300 million albums, making them not only one of rock’s ultimate superstar bands, but also one of the most successful.

‘With a web of spoof sci-fi characters, a policeman that any crime writer would be proud to disown, a damsel in distress, and the abduction of Arnold's mother-in-law by aliens, there's no shortage of storylines to be enjoyed here’ – The Independent

ROY ‘CHUBBY’ BROWN

BETRAYAL

He’s still rude, he’s still crude and this time he’s turning headlines into punch lines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country. Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views – sailing so close to the wind that even the most seasoned of fans will be left gobsmacked!

Betrayal begins after the end of the affair, and pursues an intricate, gripping journey back to its very beginning. In a brilliant device, time is turned upside down as the play charts significant events in reverse. A ruthless exploration of the complexity of the human heart, Betrayal is Pinter’s most accessible work, enthralling and provocatively layered. For ages 14 & over.

As politically incorrect as ever ‘The World’s Most Outrageous Comedian’ is far too rude for TV, so this live performance is the only place to catch him in his natural environment. The show contains strong language and adult material. If easily offended please stay away!

THE UKULELE ORCHESTRA OF GREAT BRITAIN

Sell A Door Theatre Company presents

THE DRIFTERS

THE STONES

2013 marks the 60th Anniversary of The Drifters and in celebration they present The Diamond Dynasty Tour, featuring the current line-up of Pierre Herelle, Michael Williams, Ryan King and Carlton Powell, who were Sony Gold Disc winners in 2012. This incredible worldwide tour visits the UK, Europe, Asia, America, South Africa and Australia to enable their fans to enjoy their incredible music and success in this very special year.

The Rolling Stones are quite possibly the greatest rock band in history. They have sold over 200 million albums, with hits such as Satisfaction, Start Me Up, Paint It Black, Not Fade Away, Get Off My Cloud, Let’s Spend The Night Together, Time Is On My Side, I Wanna Be Your Man, Honky Tonk Women, and Jumping Jack Flash to name but a few.

From the North Pole to Sydney Opera House, via Carnegie Hall and the Royal Albert Hall, the ‘Ukes’ are touring planet Earth with their hilarious, foot-stomping, toe-tapping, all-singing, all-plucking obituary of rock & roll and melodious light entertainment. You'll hear music you love and music you 'simply didn't get' transformed into a joyous, headlong stream of musical sound and delight, featuring only 'bonsai guitars', a menagerie of voices and warm personalities. A world tour with only hand luggage! From the first sold out concert in 1985 to the current world tour, the Ukes have been ‘turning the world on’ to the ukulele. They have online clips with millions of views, CD and DVD sales in the hundreds of thousands and sold out shows around the world. They're independent, anarchic, funny, virtuosic, thought provoking and mind boggling. They have sixteenhandedly changed the face of the ukulele world. Today there are thousands of ukulele orchestras, but it all started here – the original and the best, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain! Tickets: £19, £21 No discounts

GHOSTS By Henrik Ibsen From the company who brought you A Taste Of Honey and Lord of the Flies. Helen Alving is trapped in a world where the ‘dead ideas’ preached by Pastor Manders rule outright, and her own family’s insidious legacy threatens scandal. She is desperately trying to conceal her husband’s philandering past by building an orphanage in his name, under the pastor’s guiding hand. But the celebrated return of her estranged son Oswald brings Helen’s ghosts back to haunt her, and all hopes of success are reduced to ashes. Though penned in 1881, it is not hard for us to see the parallels in our own society of today: the pious leaders of the past replaced with our own custodians of the status quo, and money their new religion. For ages 10 & over. SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE: Contact participation@boh.org.uk or 01298 72050

A spine-tingling new whodunit based on the world’s most famous case. Charles William Lestrange was a newly promoted detective inspector in the Metropolitan Police, just transferred to H Division in Whitechapel, when the Autumn of Terror, as it came to be known, reached its grizzly height. Now, thirteen years later, and ably assisted by Samuel Edwards and Miss Elsie Fordham, rising star of the music hall stage, Lestrange rehearses again for your titillation and delight those ghoulish events in Victorian Whitechapel which have been a source of universal fascination since the 1880s... The Ripper Files! stars Mark Homer, familiar to audiences from his role as Tony Hills in Eastenders, Jennifer Biddall (Hollyoaks, Footballers Wives Extra Time) and National Theatre actor David Gilbrook, who reprises his acclaimed performance as Inspector Charles Lestrange. With a deliciously wicked sting in the tail, The Ripper Files! is a worthy successor to a long line of Rumpus chillers. 22

Dave Swarbrick first came to prominence as a young instrumental virtuoso in the Ian Campbell Folk Group. Having worked alongside other musicians such as Ewan MacColl and Peggy Seeger, Beryl and Roger Marriott and A. L. Lloyd, he teamed up with Martin Carthy in 1966.

In 1974 the pop world witnessed a new phenomenon the like of which had not been seen since the days of Elvis and The Beatles. The music of The Bay City Rollers became the soundtrack for a generation of teenagers growing up in the mid 70s. The face and voice of that soundtrack belonged to Les McKeown. With Les leading the way, the band’s singles and albums shot to Number One all over the globe. Hits such as Bye Bye Baby, Shang A Lang, Summer Love Sensation and Give A Little Love propelled the band to world-wide superstardom and their trademark Scottish tartan was everywhere! Tonight’s show is a celebration of those hectic days of hit songs, touring, TV shows and the behind-thescenes pandemonium that followed the band everywhere they went. All the hit songs are there and audiences are promised a fantastic night of fun and nostalgia as they take a trip back to those days of growing up to the sounds of The Bay City Rollers. Shakespeare’s supernatural tragedy is presented in a nightmarish new production by Sebastian Rex. The themes of greed and megalomania are showcased in the original Shakespearean language with modern-day additions, as a timeless Macbeth feels the vice-like grip of past sins and the harrowing consequences of murdering sleep. Reality and hallucination merge in this astonishing piece of theatre. ‘This company is one to watch, definitely’ – The Public Reviews SCHOOLS WORKSHOPS AVAILABLE: Contact participation@boh.org.uk or 01298 72050 Free after-show Q&A with the company in the Stalls. Robert Louis Stephenson’s classic tale, retold by Mike Kenny… with a twist! Hawkins is bored. A long night stretches ahead. Almost as long as the endless shelves that need stacking…

There be mutiny at Flints! As modern-day and fantasy worlds collide, Flints Supermarket becomes the scene for this classic adventure of Hawkins, Long John Silver, parrots and pirates. ERIC BIBB

HOW TO CATCH A STAR

Eric Bibb’s new album Deeper In The Well is being hailed as one of the most important roots albums of recent years. Not only does it cross genres – folk, gospel, acoustic blues, and down-home country – but it offers a sound steeped in the rural Louisiana where it was recorded.

Once there was a boy and he loved stars very much. Every night he watched stars from his bedroom window and wished he had one of his own. One day, he decided he would try to catch a star. But first he had to think of a plan.

His breakthrough album, Good Stuff, released in 1997, was followed by Me To You, featuring some of his personal heroes, among them Pops & Mavis Staples. There then followed the Grammy-nominated Shakin’ a Tailfeather (with Taj Mahal & Linda Tillery & the Cultural Heritage Choir); Friends, which featured Odetta, Charlie Musselwhite, Guy Davis & Taj Mahal; and two collaborations with his father, A Family Affair and Praising Peace: A Tribute to Paul Robeson. More recent was his 2010 Booker’s Guitar, a tribute to blues pioneer Bukka White. A four-decade career, 35 albums, countless radio and TV shows and non-stop touring have given Eric Bibb a world and music view that’s tempered by curiosity and compassion. Don’t miss his Buxton visit! Tickets: £26 No discounts

TWO GHOST STORIES by M.R. James Performed by R.M. Lloyd Parry Over a century after they were first published, the ghost stories of M.R. James retain their power to terrify and amuse. This gripping one-man show retells two of the earliest and eeriest: In Canon Alberic’s Scrapbook, a young Cambridge antiquary discovers the devil in the details of an old book in a medieval town in the French Pyrenees... In The Mezzotint a ghoulish revenge is enacted within a work of art, before the helpless eyes of a museum curator in Oxford...

AN EVENING WITH DOROTHY PARKER Accompanied on stage by the Steve Salfield Jazz Trio, playing the music of the 1920s and 30s, David Frederickson’s new play features the words, wisdom and wisecracks of one of America's foremost jazz age writers. Dorothy Parker's journalism was characterised by rapier wit and her poems and short stories by melancholy and aching vulnerability. Her pen frequently upset the literary establishment and provided an acerbic commentary on life in inter-war America.

NIGEL FARAGE Whether you subscribe to Prime Minister David Cameron’s 2006 claim that Nigel Farage’s UKIP party is full of "fruitcakes, loonies and closet racists" or regard him as the only man who offers a feasible alternative to the doldrums of current mainstream politics, he’s a fascinating phenomenon - and very hard to ignore! Recent poll gains by UKIP have forced him (by no means reluctantly!) into the political spotlight, where his name and face have suddenly become significant on our media landscape. As a result, there’s never been a better time to welcome him to Buxton Opera House! This will be your chance to see Nigel in the flesh and hear him explain why he believes UKIP can offer Britain a better future, why the party did so well in the recent County Council elections, and why, according to him, we would all be better off ditching the EU! Matthew Cammelle, Stephen John Davis and Glyn Kerslake have all played, to huge critical acclaim, the mysterious Phantom in Andrew Lloyd Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. Tonight they step out from behind the mask and join forces to present what is quite possibly ‘the best gala evening of musical theatre you are ever likely to see’ (The Public Reviews). An evening in the company of Three Phantoms not only offers some very special favourites from a century of West End & Broadway musical magic, but also concludes in a powerful combination of songs, all inspired by the Gaston Leroux novel Le fantôme de l'opéra.

The trio are joined by the fantastic Rebecca Caine, whose performance as Christine in the original cast of Phantom, opposite Michael Crawford, was acclaimed on both sides of the Atlantic. The lights are dimming, the curtain is about to rise, so relax with the Phantoms, and listen...to the music of the night! ‘Simply phenomenal’ – whatsonstage Three Phantoms is in no way connected with and/or approved/endorsed by Really Useful Group or Andrew Lloyd Webber.

HAZEL O’CONNOR - THE BREAKING GLASS BAREFOOT TOUR 2013

BY HANDEL Friday 8 November 7.30pm

Handel’s three-year visit to Italy culminated in the premiere of Agrippina in Venice in 1709. Composing at speed to a scandalously witty libretto by a cardinal (Vincenzo Grimani) Handel drew on his experience of the Italian style, plundering his catalogue of cantatas written for the intelligentsia of Rome and producing a youthful masterpiece of dazzling invention and virtuosity. Widely regarded as Handel’s first operatic masterpiece, Agrippina stands out for the quality of its music, full of freshness and musical invention.

Hazel O’Connor is back in Buxton, teaming up with saxophonist Clare Hirst (Bellestars, Communards, David Bowie) and Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics) on keyboards, to create a superb blend of musicianship and a trio of classy voices. Expect a sumptuous evening of some of the great songs of the 20th century delivered with passion and fire, a soulful introspective dip into Hazel's stunning portfolio – the old and the new with stories and tales from along the way.

THE CORONATION OF POPPEA BY MONTEVERDI

Both operas sung in English & accompanied by a live period orchestra.

Here live and onstage, her unforgettable songs from the movie Breaking Glass, including Eighth Day, Will You, Big Brother, only seem even more relevant in our present times. In addition to the release of Breaking Glass on DVD, this unique tour also coincides with the publication of Hazel's long-awaited autobiography Breaking Glass Barefoot. With a critically acclaimed new album I Give You My Sunshine and a special Meet & Greet immediately after the show, you're in for a treat!

Love, power, morality, corruption…Monteverdi’s final masterpiece is often described as his greatest achievement, combining mythic and very human themes, and featuring some of his most glorious music. One of the first operas to use historical events and people, it tells the story of Nero’s infatuation with the young and beautiful Poppea as she tries to make him divorce his wife Ottavia and take her as his new queen and empress.

There will be FREE pre-performance talks on both evenings at 6.30pm in the Pavilion Arts Centre. Please ask for a ticket when booking for the opera.

CARA DILLON

- ROARING FORTIES

Cara Dillon has one of those rare talents you only come across a handful times in life. Her staggeringly beautiful voice has the ability to reach inside a song and imbue it with not only profound sweetness but also poignancy and depth.

ALIENS LOVE UNDERPANTS Based on the book by Claire Freedman & Ben Cort Written & directed by Adam Bampton-Smith ‘Aliens love underpants In every shape and size But there are no underpants in space So here's a big surprise!’ This zany and hilarious tale based on the best-selling children’s book is delightfully brought to life on stage for the very first time. With stunning effects, madcap action, original music (and lots of aliens of course!) this fantastically fresh and funny production will delight the whole family. In fact, you'll laugh your PANTS off!

A self-confessed ‘miserable old git’ since the age of 23, Ed Byrne is now in his forties. While for others this might result in a crisis that prompts the purchase of a sports car, Ed embraces middle age with open arms. Come join him, as he truly comes of age and gives out his clarion cry: ‘I am in my forties - HEAR ME ROAR!’ ‘Byrne at the top of his game’ – The Sunday Telegraph ‘Jokes come so fast that hecklers can’t get a word in edgeways’ – The Times May contain strong language Tickets: £23.50 No discounts

Born in Dungiven in 1975, she was immersed in the rich cultural heritage of her native County Derry, winning the All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy aged only 14. She went on to sing with Oige, De Dannan and then Equation, where she met her husband and musical collaborator Sam Lakeman. The combination of Cara's expressive vocals and Lakeman's rippling piano and fresh production squeezed new life into ancient material. Whether she's singing her native traditional songs of lost love and emigration, or her & Sam’s original compositions, you will be hard pressed to find a more emotive and captivating performer. Her autumn tour will showcase the songs on her new album, scheduled for release in October 2013.

ULTIMATE BOWIE David Bowie is widely regarded as one of the most influential innovators of the last five decades, selling around 200 million albums during his career. He first caught the public’s eye in 1969, with his space-age mini-melodrama Space Oddity, followed in 1972 by the flamboyant Rise & Fall of Ziggy Stardust & The Spiders from Mars. Hits such as Starman, Golden Years, Ashes To Ashes and Heroes followed, with a re-emergence in the mid-80s with the pop sounds of Let’s Dance and China Girl. Then in 2013, came his latest reincarnation, after a decade’s silence. Ultimate Bowie pays tribute to the work of this global superstar, in a show that is visually stunning and vocally impressive. Ed Blaney takes the spotlight and leads an 8-piece band that takes us from Bowie’s early years right up to the 21st century. This band isn’t called Ultimate Bowie for nothing – they capture the real essence and authenticity of David Bowie in concert! This version is adapted by Nicola Boyce, who also brought A Christmas Carol and The Woman in White to the stage for IDP. Expect duelling, elopement, bribery, fisticuffs, mistaken identity, near drowning, and finally, imprisonment for debt! THE MAN OF DESTINY

- LIFE ON THE ROAD

By George Bernard Shaw

Steve & Hugh (Mary Whitehouse Experience, Outnumbered, Mock The Week, The Now Show) live the dream as they cruise the contraflow lanes, follow the one-way systems, unwrap the pasties and sip the service-station coffees of Britain in their quest to find somewhere to park that’s vaguely near your local theatre.

It is the year 1796. Napoleon waits in an Italian inn for urgent despatches. Instead he is confronted by a very attractive Strange Lady who seems to know him better than he knows himself. In the highly entertaining battle of wills and wits which ensues (ironically interrupted by the innkeeper) the fate of the future ruler of Europe hangs in the balance. This production of Shaw’s witty attack on empty heroism and political expediency was revived at Pentameters Theatre in Hampstead early in 2013 and now transfers to Buxton as part of a short Spring 2014 tour.

DISCOUNTS Discounted prices apply (unless stated otherwise) to Senior Citizens, groups of 8 or more adults, JSA claimants, people in receipt of Income Support (including Pensions Credit), disabled people, full-time students (aged 16 & over) and children aged 3 to 15. Please be prepared to provide proof of status. Only one discount can apply per ticket.

RELOCATION OF SHOWS Very occasionally, we may have to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre main auditorium to the studio (or vice versa in each case). Tickets originally purchased as numbered may become unallocated, in which case we regret we cannot refund.

Children are welcome at the Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre, but please note the following: • Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult. • School or children’s groups of 10 or more should be accompanied by at least one adult per 10 children. • Children under the age of 3 (& Babies 12 months or under) can only be admitted at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price (or ‘Babies Free’ offer) is indicated, & not to any other shows. Sadly, we are not able to accommodate under 3s in the Paupers Pit or Studio Theatre. • A safety leaflet is produced for all families using the Opera House balconies or boxes; please ask when booking. For safety reasons, Upper Circle side seats & boxes are not sold to families with children under 10.

DANCING If you book to see a show in the Opera House and wish to dance, please ensure you book seats in the Stalls as we do not allow dancing on the upper levels. The Upper Circle sides and boxes are ‘no standing at all’ areas. 83

STANDBY TICKETS Limited numbers of £5 Standby Tickets are available for most performances (see each entry in this brochure to be sure) from one hour before the performance (not Opera House Dress Circle seats) to Full-time Students (aged 16 & over) and people in receipt of JSA/Income Support. Proof of status is required.

TICKET EXCHANGE If you are unable to attend a performance for any reason, we will exchange your tickets for another performance (if any) of the same event subject to availability. (We cannot transfer tickets or money to an alternative show). We can offer this service provided that your tickets are returned to the Box Office at least 48 hours before the performance. Tickets will not be refunded unless the performance is cancelled. Postage charges are nonrefundable in the event of cancellation.

RESERVATIONS Reservations will be held for a maximum of seven working days. On the day of a performance reservations are held until 30 minutes before the start of a show. For very busy shows, tickets booked within 7 days of the performance must be paid for at the time of booking.

PERSONAL DATA Please note that personal information (such as name, address, phone number, email address, etc) given to our Box Office during a ticket transaction is held securely and confidentially, and we or our visiting companies may use it to contact you by post, phone or e-mail for marketing purposes. If you would prefer not to receive information regarding future events, please let us know. 84

general information ACCESS

THEATRE TOURS & COFFEE MORNINGS

The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The wheelchair entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls (ground floor level) and a specially adapted toilet. Unfortunately the Stalls bar is not wheelchair accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.

The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold public coffee mornings at the Opera House between 10am and 12 noon, and tours (£2.50 per person) of the theatre at 11am, most Saturdays. Private group tours can also be arranged (£5 per person). Contact 01298 72050 for details.

The Opera House Foyer and Box Office counter are not wheelchair accessible, but there is now wheelchair access to the side Box Office door (in Water St), with an intercom system to alert staff. The Dress Circle and Upper Circle levels are not wheelchair accessible and can only be reached by climbing the stairs. The building is not accessible by motorised scooter. All parts of the Pavilion Arts Centre (and both St John’s Rd entrances) are accessible by wheelchair, apart from the Main Room balcony. In both venues, safety considerations mean that, if you would have difficulty making your own way out of the building in an emergency, we strongly request that you bring a companion. see p83 for details of companions’ tickets. We have passive infra-red (PIR) systems in both the Opera House & Arts Centre for people with hearing impairments. This works through a special headset (rather than your hearing aid), which is available from the theatre – please reserve one when you book your tickets (a £10 cash deposit is required on the night). There is also an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Audio & braille copies of each Opera House/Arts Centre brochure are available. To request a copy contact the Marketing Department on 01298 72050. Guide dogs are welcome.

REFRESHMENTS Pre-show and interval drinks are available in the Opera House & Arts Centre bars. The bars are open from approximately 45 minutes prior to each performance. Don’t forget to order interval drinks in advance. Please note both venues are no smoking buildings.

LATECOMERS will only be admitted at a suitable break in the performance, which will be at the discretion of the performers or management.

WILLOUGHBY LUNCHEON CLUB The Willoughby Club raises funds for the Opera House by organising lunches at The Lee Wood Hotel, Buxton, on the last Thursday of each month, from March to November. Contact 01298 813464 for details.
