Buxton Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre are operated by High Peak Theatre Trust, a registered charity run on an entirely not-for-profit basis. In order to present the artistic programme and staff the theatre, we rely on our major funders, High Peak Borough Council and Arts Council England (see right), substantial volunteer help (around 200 local people), our earned share of Box Office income, ancillary income such as bar sales, plus around ÂŁ200,000 annual fundraising (from concerts, regular donors, Cash Bonanza members, etc). Thank you if you help or support us in any way. The Theatre Trust is run by a Board of Trustee-Directors and a complement of paid staff and volunteers. The current Board members are: Clive Beattie (Chairman), Dr Beverley Carter Lady Jasmine Cavendish, Elizabeth Hitchin Louise Potter, Carol Prowse, Paul Rooney Keith Savage (nominee of High Peak Borough Council) John Scampion, Rosemary Stafford, Colin Sykes
Lady Jasmine Cavendish is also the Patron of the Trust, while Michael Williams and Bob Mulholland are the Vice-Patrons.
High Peak Borough Council has been a funder of the Opera House since 1979. The Council makes an annual grant towards our artistic and operating costs, and also gives financial assistance to the Buxton Festival and International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. The Council is also the owner of the Opera House & the Pavilion Arts Centre, and maintains the fabric of both buildings. The restoration & refurbishments of 1979, 2001 & 2007 were all partnership projects between Council and Trust, with significant funding from both.
Arts Council England has been a funder of the Opera House since 2003, making an annual grant towards our artistic costs, specifically the drama programme. ACE has also previously given financial support to our Live Music Festival, A to Z Festival, Education Officer post & Fringe Seasons, and also made capital grants to the 2001 refurbishment and the Pavilion Arts Centre project.

We will be opening our doors wide once again to children & families during this October half term (26 Oct to 3 Nov) for another mouthwatering selection of workshops and performances. This year also sees the return of our ever popular Spooky Sleepover in the Opera House - always a popular sell-out, so book early! Arts Club Our adult Arts Club has been going from strength to strength over the past two years. Come and enjoy the opportunity to be creative with arts professionals, in a series of workshops lead by local visual artists – without the clearing up after! Whether you’re a budding artist yourself, a complete beginner or enjoy the therapeutic side of the arts – Kaleidoscope Arts Club is for you.
Beanbag Stories Beanbag Stories provides a chance for your cheeky monkeys to get lost in their imaginations. Led by our Kaleidoscope team, the sessions encourage your child to learn through storytelling and discover new worlds, far off kingdoms and set sail on the seven seas! We aim to nurture your child’s speaking and listening skills, improve concentration and most of all raise you and your toddlers’ spirits with lots of giggles! So come and experience the stories, sounds and songs of Beanbag Stories – creative play for shufflebottoms and babies! We meet once a month on Tuesdays from 11.15am to 12noon. The Autumn 2013 dates are: 10 Sept, 22 Oct, 12 Nov, 17 Dec. Tickets from the Box Office.
So if you are free in the day and want to learn more about the expressive arts then try something new with Arts Club! We meet every other Tuesday from 1pm to 3pm in the Pavilion Arts Centre. Young Drama Panel The YDP is Kaleidoscope’s reviewers’ group for GCSE and A-Level students (ages 13 to 18). Drama Panel members attend several drama productions (for free!) which includes a pre-show workshop, discussion over interval drinks and (usually) an after-show talk with members of the company – all the help you need to write your review. Simple! Never written a review before? – not a problem. We’ll give you plenty of tips, and we’ll encourage you to express your thoughts in whatever format you choose!
This Autumn, why not try something new with our Kaleidoscope Lunchtime Choir, for beginners and more experienced singers alike! Led by Local Vocal’s teacher, Carol Bowns, it’s a great chance to sing in a group some choir classics, your favourite hymns as well as pop and folk songs. Buxton Opera House & Buxton Festival have teamed up to provide this great opportunity to try something new, every other Tuesday in the Pavilion Arts Centre at 1pm to 2pm. RECONSTRUCTING MURDER - A MURDER MYSTERY EVENING A welcome return to Buxton (we presented the event under its previous title – Murder Two Night – in August 2005) for the critically-acclaimed company Murder One for a classic evening of murder and mayhem – an interactive entertainment like no other A young woman, last seen in the vicinity of Buxton Opera House, has dramatically disappeared. Police are holding a reconstruction of her last known movements and alongside members of her family are pleading for you to become involved in the hope that you can solve this intriguing mystery. However, skeletons tumbling from the family closet mean events take an unexpected twist as the action moves from the stage into the auditorium, foyer and bar. This will be your chance to meet the suspects up close and personal to uncover the true facts behind a smokescreen of lies. But beware – one of the family is out to prove that blood is thicker than water... The evening lasts till after 10pm (when we unmask the culprit!!), and you will be moving between the various levels of the theatre, interrogating suspects. In 1974 the pop world witnessed a new phenomenon the like of which had not been seen since the days of Elvis and The Beatles. The music of The Bay City Rollers became the soundtrack for a generation of teenagers growing up in the mid 70s. The face and voice of that soundtrack belonged to Les McKeown. Eric Bibb’s new album Deeper In The Well is being hailed as one of the most important roots albums of recent years. Not only does it cross genres – folk, gospel, acoustic blues, and down-home country – but it offers a sound steeped in the rural Louisiana where it was recorded.

Handel’s three-year visit to Italy culminated in the premiere of Agrippina in Venice in 1709. Composing at speed to a scandalously witty libretto by a cardinal (Vincenzo Grimani) Handel drew on his experience of the Italian style, plundering his catalogue of cantatas written for the intelligentsia of Rome and producing a youthful masterpiece of dazzling invention and virtuosity. Widely regarded as Handel’s first operatic masterpiece, Agrippina stands out for the quality of its music, full of freshness and musical invention.
Hazel O’Connor is back in Buxton, teaming up with saxophonist Clare Hirst (Bellestars, Communards, David Bowie) and Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics) on keyboards, to create a superb blend of musicianship and a trio of classy voices. Expect a sumptuous evening of some of the great songs of the 20th century delivered with passion and fire, a soulful introspective dip into Hazel's stunning portfolio – the old and the new with stories and tales from along the way.

Born in Dungiven in 1975, she was immersed in the rich cultural heritage of her native County Derry, winning the All Ireland Traditional Singing Trophy aged only 14. ACIS & GALATEA By Handel Following their 2013 tour of Albert Herring, Mid Wales present another operatic gem. Possibly the most famous pastoral opera ever, Acis... is a masterpiece by George Frederic Handel, with words by John Gay, best known for The Beggar’s Opera. It tells an enchanting story from ancient mythology: Acis is the son of the spirit Pan, Galatea a nymph of the sea. They fall in love, only to be thwarted by the monstrous cyclops, Polyphemus. In a jealous rage he murders Acis, leaving Galatea bereft. In her despair, she turns the blood of her dead lover into a river, forever flowing into the sea.

It is the year 1796. Napoleon waits in an Italian inn for urgent despatches. Instead he is confronted by a very attractive Strange Lady who seems to know him better than he knows himself. In the highly entertaining battle of wills and wits which ensues (ironically interrupted by the innkeeper) the fate of the future ruler of Europe hangs in the balance. This production of Shaw’s witty attack on empty heroism and political expediency was revived at Pentameters Theatre in Hampstead early in 2013 and now transfers to Buxton as part of a short Spring 2014 tour.

Get a discount (not available online) off your tickets for most shows when you book your overnight stay at any holiday accomodation in the Buxton area. A list of hotels and guest houses is available from Buxton Tourist Information Centre on 01298 25106 or on-line at www.visitpeakdistrict.com Please note: You will be asked for some form of ID confirming your overnight stay when collecting your Buxton Breaks tickets (eg: booking form, hotel compliments slip or room key).
DISABLED CUSTOMERS & COMPANIONS Registered Disabled customers receive discounts to many performances, as indicated on each page. Essential companions or anyone in receipt of Carers’ Allowance are admitted free (proof of eligibility may be requested). Companions outside these categories receive a 50% discount (when discounts are available on that performance).
SCHOOL & GROUP DISCOUNTS
Special discounts are usually available for groups and schools. In addition to our standard rate for groups of 8 or more (available on most shows), we are also BOOKINGS AT THE usually able to offer more generous PAVILION ARTS CENTRE discounts for groups of 20 or more (or Bookings for the Arts Centre can be made 10+ for schools). CHILDREN IN THE THEATRE
Online booking is available 24 hours a day at www.buxtonoperahouse.org.uk. Some discounts, including group bookings and Matcham discounts, may not be available online. Please note that for online bookings there is a small (non-refundable in the event of cancellation) internet fee per ticket.
DISCOUNTS Discounted prices apply (unless stated otherwise) to Senior Citizens, groups of 8 or more adults, JSA claimants, people in receipt of Income Support (including Pensions Credit), disabled people, full-time students (aged 16 & over) and children aged 3 to 15. Please be prepared to provide proof of status. Only one discount can apply per ticket.
RELOCATION OF SHOWS Very occasionally, we may have to relocate a show from the Opera House to the Arts Centre or from the Arts Centre main auditorium to the studio (or vice versa in each case). Tickets originally purchased as numbered may become unallocated, in which case we regret we cannot refund.
Children are welcome at the Opera House & Pavilion Arts Centre, but please note the following: • Children under the age of 12 should be accompanied by an adult. • School or children’s groups of 10 or more should be accompanied by at least one adult per 10 children. • Children under the age of 3 (& Babies 12 months or under) can only be admitted at family shows where the £2.50 discounted price (or ‘Babies Free’ offer) is indicated, & not to any other shows. Sadly, we are not able to accommodate under 3s in the Paupers Pit or Studio Theatre. • A safety leaflet is produced for all families using the Opera House balconies or boxes; please ask when booking. For safety reasons, Upper Circle side seats & boxes are not sold to families with children under 10.
DANCING If you book to see a show in the Opera House and wish to dance, please ensure you book seats in the Stalls as we do not allow dancing on the upper levels. The Upper Circle sides and boxes are ‘no standing at all’ areas. 83
STANDBY TICKETS Limited numbers of £5 Standby Tickets are available for most performances (see each entry in this brochure to be sure) from one hour before the performance (not Opera House Dress Circle seats) to Full-time Students (aged 16 & over) and people in receipt of JSA/Income Support. Proof of status is required.
TICKET EXCHANGE If you are unable to attend a performance for any reason, we will exchange your tickets for another performance (if any) of the same event subject to availability. (We cannot transfer tickets or money to an alternative show). We can offer this service provided that your tickets are returned to the Box Office at least 48 hours before the performance. Tickets will not be refunded unless the performance is cancelled. Postage charges are nonrefundable in the event of cancellation.
RESERVATIONS Reservations will be held for a maximum of seven working days. On the day of a performance reservations are held until 30 minutes before the start of a show. For very busy shows, tickets booked within 7 days of the performance must be paid for at the time of booking.
PERSONAL DATA Please note that personal information (such as name, address, phone number, email address, etc) given to our Box Office during a ticket transaction is held securely and confidentially, and we or our visiting companies may use it to contact you by post, phone or e-mail for marketing purposes. If you would prefer not to receive information regarding future events, please let us know. 84
general information ACCESS
THEATRE TOURS & COFFEE MORNINGS
The Opera House is an Edwardian building and only partially accessible to wheelchair users. The wheelchair entrance is 72cms at its narrowest point. We have three wheelchair spaces in the Stalls (ground floor level) and a specially adapted toilet. Unfortunately the Stalls bar is not wheelchair accessible, but a member of staff will gladly bring refreshments to your seat.
The Fundraising Friends of Buxton Opera House hold public coffee mornings at the Opera House between 10am and 12 noon, and tours (£2.50 per person) of the theatre at 11am, most Saturdays. Private group tours can also be arranged (£5 per person). Contact 01298 72050 for details.
The Opera House Foyer and Box Office counter are not wheelchair accessible, but there is now wheelchair access to the side Box Office door (in Water St), with an intercom system to alert staff. The Dress Circle and Upper Circle levels are not wheelchair accessible and can only be reached by climbing the stairs. The building is not accessible by motorised scooter. All parts of the Pavilion Arts Centre (and both St John’s Rd entrances) are accessible by wheelchair, apart from the Main Room balcony. In both venues, safety considerations mean that, if you would have difficulty making your own way out of the building in an emergency, we strongly request that you bring a companion. see p83 for details of companions’ tickets. We have passive infra-red (PIR) systems in both the Opera House & Arts Centre for people with hearing impairments. This works through a special headset (rather than your hearing aid), which is available from the theatre – please reserve one when you book your tickets (a £10 cash deposit is required on the night). There is also an induction loop system at both Box Offices. Audio & braille copies of each Opera House/Arts Centre brochure are available. REFRESHMENTS Pre-show and interval drinks are available in the Opera House & Arts Centre bars. The bars are open from approximately 45 minutes prior to each performance. Don’t forget to order interval drinks in advance. Please note both venues are no smoking buildings.
LATECOMERS will only be admitted at a suitable break in the performance, which will be at the discretion of the performers or management.
WILLOUGHBY LUNCHEON CLUB The Willoughby Club raises funds for the Opera House by organising lunches at The Lee Wood Hotel, Buxton, on the last Thursday of each month, from March to November. Contact 01298 813464 for details.
